I recently visited Kanki for dinner and unfortunately, it did not meet expectations at all. For $35.99 PER plate for me and my husband, I was expecting a satisfying meal, but I was left extremely disappointed. The portions were incredibly small, as you can see the in the picture, especially considering the price. We got a few pieces of shrimp and a few pieces of filet (what you see in the picture is what I got sadly). To make matters worse, the rice was undercooked and had a crunchy texture, which made my husband and I feel ill afterwards. Additionally, the vegetables were burnt and lacked flavor (and again, the portions were small). Overall, this was a poor dining experience, and we won’t be returning. Kanki has gone downhill.

One of the best Japanese Steakhouses out here!! I definitely recommend to anyone. The quality of food is exceptional. Ask for Hector, he is amazing. Definitely make your reservations, if not your wait will be long. They can be very busy.

The wait service was responsive, but that's where the good ends. Teppanyaki is supposed to be a show, but our chef may as well have cooked behind closed doors. He only spoke to confirm one order was forgotten. Otherwise, he worked on autopilot, and messily, leaving rice all over the table. The food was overcooked and overseasoned (and I mean even more than expected for this type of food). Within a minute of the last protein being served, the chef left without saying anything and the waitress gave us our check, as if to rush us out the door. This was deeply disappointing for a birthday dinner.

Other tables with different chefs seemed to be having a good time, but not us.

Excellent food (hibachi). However, poor service, some of the worst service I’ve experienced at a restaurant. Soup and salad came out 35 min after we arrived and food took over an hour even though restaurant was not busy. No one checked on us. Had to get up and ask someone to bring us bill and to go boxes. I do have to say though this was some of the best hibachi I’ve had (hibachi filet mignon, hibachi vegetables and shrimp). I will visit again for the great food and hope service will improve.

Our party arrived at 7 pm and we were seated. Someone must have forgotten about our table because we didn't get a chef until after 8:30 pm. No drink service, we had to go to the bar. Food was good and our chef was fun, but it was a bad experience overall. We were celebrating a birthday and let the waiter know. We saw other tables get a birthday song and dessert, but nothing for us. Won't be back!

We had a great experience! The manager, Paul, greeted us individually and checked in on us multiple times. He was very nice and genuinely interested in us having a good experience. The new decor really brightens up the restaurant - a great time all around! Thanks for the hospitality and the great food!

I enjoyed my time here. It was my first time and it wasn’t too crowded, our server was nice and accommodating. The drinks were amazing! The chef was hilarious. My wife and I were thoroughly impressed. The food was excellent. Our meals were slightly expensive but well worth every dollar as coming to this restaurant will be a moment to remember!

It was cold & the pick up person had the audacity to ask me if I wanted to leave an additional tip
Absolutely terrible service was lied 3 times telling me it's ready & it'll be right out
When I told the pick up guy I watched my food sitting on a shelf for 10 mins getting cold he told me I was wrong & the order was just placed there & hadn't been sitting there for over 10 mins getting cold

Our chef with Johnny honestly truly was awesome he was extremely entertaining and exceptionally knowledgeable about his profession. Our waiter was Dixie, he was extremely polite and attentive. We actually love this place and we go here a couple of times a month because everybody seems to be awesome.
We had not been here in a year because we moved away and we were in the area, so decided to visit today and it is just as good as it always has been.

Update my wife and I came today and Jala was our waitress and Hector was our chef. Both were truly amazing.
I highly recommend this wonderful establishment to anyone that wants a great meal with amazing staff.

EDITED: Months later I come back and it’s not Easter yet the same thing happened where I was waiting 23 minutes after the time stated when I ordered the food. I should’ve stayed anti-Kanki bc how are you still a mess months later?

My curbside order said it’ll be ready at 1:03 and so I call several times to get an update on my order just to have to GO INSIDE 30 minutes later after waiting just to be told “oh it’s because it’s Easter it’s busy” well then don’t say the time will be one thing if it’s not! Horrible horrible reason and in no way to tried to correct their error. If I had time to sit for 30 mins I would’ve went inside but I did curbside for a reason. I’m good on this place.

We had reservations AND were made to wait over an hour for a table... With 3 toddlers. Do not recommend. The front house staff were a disaster. They said there was one person ahead of us... And then sat us maybe 20 people ahead of us. I don't mind making other plans if they messed up but don't lie about it. My husband ordered drinks at the bar, they found out how long we'd been waiting and then a manager or someone seemed to just magic up a table for us. The show was good to be fair, the food was really over salted. What a shame.

I unfortunately had a bad experience. The chef took food off of my friends plate and put it on my plate. Her plate had shrimp on it and I can not have seafood. And not only that but that was very unsanitary. They did fix me new food after I expressed my issue. But I just don’t understand why you would think it’s okay to give me food off of someone’s plate that they have eaten off of.

I’ll start by saying this place used to be amazing and the place to go. Not anymore. Took us forever to get our food cooked. The cook who came to prepare our order did not give us a show like what you expect. The food was not good in the slightest. The white sauce tastes identical to mayonnaise and literally nothing else. We didn’t get refills and had to wait forever for the waitress to come back so we could get our check.

The highlight of our night was undoubtedly the incredible performance by our chef, Hector. He masterfully cooked our meal on a massive grill, all while dazzling us with impressive flair and tricks, including spectacular bursts of fire and juggling knives.

I brought my parents along, and they had the best time of their lives, thoroughly enjoying every moment. Despite my seafood allergy, the staff went above and beyond to ensure that my food was safely prepared, which truly impressed me. The manager, Laura, even took the time to visit our table and check on our experience.

The food was so delicious that I forgot to take pictures of it, but I did manage to capture some snapshots of our fantastic entertainment. If you're looking for a night of entertainment or want to impress someone special, I highly recommend Kanki. This place has it all – amazing food, top-notch service, and an unforgettable show!

If I could give more stars, I would. My wife picked dinner since I had picked the movie for our date night. This was my first time ever at a hibachi restaurant and everything was just perfect. High-quality food, great experience, clean environment. My bro and I sat down at a shared table with other customers and were greeted by our server Ameerest. She helped us with ordering and kept our table tidy. My man MOZART was our Hibachi chef and he is passionate and experienced! He knows how to entertain and had the whole table laughing! If you ever come here, ask for him for sure. This place is definitely worth the cost. I got the Tokyo dinner for two $55.99 (all for me) and my bro got a $30 entrée. The amount of food was worth it. The ginger dressing on the salad is mouth watering.

I used to love Kanki, but they've really gone downhill. The ginger dressing for the salad was watered down, and tart, The yum yum sauce is brought out in a small dish and not refilled. Portion sizes have gotten much smaller, and my medium filet was cut up into baby sized pieces for some strange reason. My meal came out completely wrong, and my husband finished his long before my meal finally came out.

Gave all of the zucchini to one person the rest of us only got mushrooms and onion? Reallynot sure what that was about. Got about 1.5 shrimp. Between 3 people, the other people at the table got the rest. Didn't get asked how I wanted my filet, it got cooked well done. And everything was extremely salty. Would give 0/5 but not possible

The place closes at 9 PM on Wednesdays but I think the staff mentally checks out at 8 PM. Staff acts like they don’t want to be there. Worst customer service. Waitress was rude. The cook was hurrying the food like he had to be somewhere else other than our table preparing our food. The only person that looked like they were trying was the guy who said it was his first day. He was nice and respectful and was actually trying to work. Worst thing is it’s that I’ve been here at least half a dozen times before and I don’t remember it being this lousy. Should’ve gone to Outback next door. Editing to add that our shrimp wasn’t peeled all the way and the ribeye looked old and had the texture of chicken for medium well.

Everything was horrible. I took my husband here for his birthday and the hostess forgot to message us to let us know it was time for us to sit. We waited more than an hour for the chef to come to the grill to then find out the grill wasn't even on so we had to wait another 15 min. While that chef went and service someone who waited behinded us. Finally, we spoke to the manager and she had an attitude and was aggravated because we told her what was going on. We never got one apology out of all of this. She did offered a discount after one lady asked what she was going to do for us being inconvenience. When the grill finally got hot another chef came over he was eating something before coming to cook our food and whatever he was eating came out his mouth and landed on the grill. Everybody at the tabel decides to leave after that point. Almost 2 hours later no food it 9:40pm that ment everything was close. That was the worst experience at a Japanese place I ever experience. If I could give zero stars I definitely would.

I travel down from Norfolk Virginia and wanted a Japanese experience with a couple of colleagues, we decided to try this restaurant, Had a great server (Mathias) and an extremely talented chef (Hector). this establishment is lucky to have workers like them because a bartender (David)that claims to be the restaurant manager left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth. He is not as professional, as you would expect in such a highly regarded establishment because of his nonchalant and discarding attitude I would never eat there again Because of him, I will try plenty of restaurants that surround the area and never return to Kanki because of how he treated us.

So insulted, my date and I walked out. We somehow offended the hostess and other staff by forcing them to do what their job description requires them to do. It’s a sad day when the staff is groaning and eye rolling over a simple request. I have a bad back and the high top tables don’t work for me, can we sit in a booth? No, that section is closed at 8:30pm. I asked her to ask a manager and that didn’t go over well. So if you have to park in handicapped parking, don’t expect ANY accommodations or even a polite and respectful “ no “. I gave a fantastic review last time I ate here so I was hopeful to catch the five star magic again. A pair of bad hires set the tone for my neighborhood Kanki from fantastic two months ago to rude and insulting. I was absolutely presented with the what the hell are you doing here asking me to feed you and your date “ attitude “ so the hours of operation are they posted open till 9:00pm. But at 8:36pm. Everything is closed and blocked but the high top tables at the bar. For disabled people, well tough poo, delivered by hostess and manager. The posted 9:00 pm closing time is a lie. I guess it’s only for the door dashers. Just be honest and say to go only after 8:00 pm. That would have saved me the public insult.

Some adults own this restaurant but they choose very young people focused on getting rid of the customers especially the old ones so they can walk out at 8:59pm.

I regret that my last review was so positive based on one visit. So please reduce it by 50 % based upon tonight’s sub McDonald’s experience.

Rude staff. I was the only black person at my table, 5 were Latino with my spouse being one, 3 were Caucasian. I was not at the end on either side of our table. He skipped me when serving food each time and gave my portion to someone else. He had no intention of rectifying the situation until I said something to him. It was intentional and not part of the show. This is the 2nd time the same chef has done this to me. This is unacceptable .

Which was terrible. Waitress didn't state her name or greet us. Never came back for refills. If you asked for anything she just looked as If she was irritated. By the end we saw the manager which we had to ask to get to go boxes and things of that nature. I have worked in the food industry and I understand things can get busy and it's a team, but this was def a terrible dining experience for a birthday gathering. Also a party of 8 so 18% gratuity was added which would have been fine if we actually had a decent waitress. This was the chicken hibachi :(

If you’re hungry, don’t listen to what they tell you and get you a table and not the grill. We were told 15mins max was all we had to wait, took more like 40mins before the cook came out, and tho we were the first at the table, we were the last to be served, and then he forgot about my mom and didn’t give her her shrimp so extra wait. The waitress were sweet, the food was ok, but if you’re in a hurry or hungry, get you a regular table.

BEWARE! Walked in and walked right back out. Went in for sushi needed a regular table they only said they are offering high top tables. Even knowing they had at least 25 standard table empty. We stated we need a high chair for a 2 year old and was told no they cannot accommodate us. I then asked what if I had a wheelchair, how would I eat here. The woman who said she was one of the managers said “I don’t know” so not only could we not eat, they cannot accommodate anyone with needs.

This restaurant experience was so bad it was actually humorous. We ordered a roll to start the meal and a meal each. The roll took about 30-45 minutes to get to out to the table, the whole time behind the bar there were at least 3-5 people talking about random things just standing around. Our waiter checked on us 2 times, once to order our food and another to bring out the check. We waited over 30 minutes after finishing our food to receive the check. The food was so over season it was barely edible, the "vegetables" were a pile of grilled onions and nothing else. Then when the waiter asked how our food was at the end of the night I said it wasn't good and he laughed and walked away.

I'm not sure where to begin, honestly. I have been coming to Kanki since I was 4 years old. I brag everywhere I go about how Kanki is my favorite restaurant in all the world. I go to Kanki for every birthday and every special occasion.

Tonight was hands down my worst experience ever at Kanki, and it came from this location in Durham. We put our names down for a party of 3 plus a baby, but were only listed as a party of 3. When it came time to be seated 30 minutes later, we had to wait an additional 15 minutes because there wasn't room for our baby at our assigned table. The host was extremely kind and apologetic and offered to repay our inconvenience. I declined and told him he was extremely kind and that mistakes happen.

The real problem was with the service provided to us by our waitress. When we finally had someone come to wait on us, we gave her our drink orders and received our drinks. We ordered our food and got our soup and salad in a timely manner. There are no issues there. Then, we rarely saw her again. No one in my family ever got a refill on drinks the entire night. We even requested twice for refills and never got any. We were never asked how our food was, if there was anything more we needed, nothing. I rarely saw our waitress anywhere in the dining room the entire night. We got our soup and salad, and the next thing we received from her was our check.

Another major issue was that when we were asked if we had any food allergies, my wife explicitly stated that she had a salmon allergy and that her food could not even come into contact with salmon or she would have a miserable time with swelling and itching later on. Well, her food was cooked with the same utensils, on the same surface, and even touching many times a piece of salmon ordered by another customer. While it is not a deadly allergy, it was a request made and expected to be honored.

The last thing I want to have happen is to come across as a male Karen here, but when I spend $100 on dinner for my wife and kids and myself to have a special family dinner, there are certain baseline expectations of service and care. We felt entirely neglected as customers for much of the night.

Shout out to the host for being so kind and accommodating and shout out to the cook for cooking great food! But I can not continue to patronize Kanki if this is how it's going to be moving forward.

The food was good but the portions were low compared to similar restaurants. My biggest problem was the service was sooooo slow! The kids beside us ordered the chicken fingers and they didn't receive them until after our chef was done cooking. We never got refills, the bar drinks didn't arrive until after our chef was already cooking.

Horrible experience!! I went with my family for my Birthday, after we all order, the cook came to cook, he start serving the food, he served the veggies and rice to everyone except me, then he said that he did not see my plate. He did not replace or anything! So I pay just for my plate $31.99 for 2 once’s of chicken and 2 one of dried steak, I order some rice to go with my food, another $4 dollars! I talked to the manager, he didn’t care at all! The cook lied and didn’t care. At the end I did not touch what they serve!
I don’t recommend, I’m not being picky, I worked in restaurants before, so know that what they did was wrong! I don’t care about food prices as long as they are fair!

On the 28th of January, My Friend Ebony Durham planned a party of 20 people to have A Birthday Day Dinner for My Daughter Grandmother. My main concern was that our waitress was not giving good service. After taken our order and Bringing back our drinks. We didn’t see her for 30min. We had no utensils, no extra napkins only the one that you have when you set down. We waited for her to come back so we could ask for salt and pepper, a plate, wanted to send the tea back for three people and order something else. We had to keep asking the other waitress that had the table for things.I never got the things I needed. So when she finally came back to refill the drinks. I asked what happened to You . We were In need of service. And her reply was I was at another table. And continued to fill drinks. No apology!! She didn’t even ask if there anything she could do or ask anyone at the table if they needed anything. She left again and didn’t return until it was time to check out. And then the manager comes to ask if there was anything he could do. No because we finished with our dinner. Myself and my daughter went up front a total of four times through out our dinner asking for our waiters. Very poor service.and she comes at the End of dinner with boxes. With this no care attitude. We didn’t need her boxes. We had boxes already for the other waitress. My blood was boiling simply because my daughter had to share a fork and the bus boy had to reach over to and empty table to get us a plate. So the chef could plate the food. . I told the manager then no tip goes to her. And my bill was over $200.00.My table had to deal with bad service. We grind and bare the situation, because it was for My Daughter and Grand kids Great Grandma. Really bad experience. What the manager could have done was to adjust my bill for bad service. I shouldn’t have to ask him to do that. He should have adjusted my check for the poor service..

Chef was in such a hurry that there was no show like Kanki is known for. Vegetables were undercooked. Meats lacked seasonings. All because he was rushing. 12 empty tables with many people standing in line. It has become normal for restaurants to blame Covid on their lack of staff. So in most of the restaurant industry, quality of service goes down and prices go up. And we just seem to accept it. Well not anymore. It will be my last trip here.

If I could have given this place a half of a star, I would have. And the only reason I would give that half is because the cook was great! From the start, the customer service was terrible. We arrived, party of 9, we were told that we would be seated within in 10 mins. At the time we arrived, it was still lunchtime. A young guy came over to us about 20 mins after we got there and asked if we planned to order from the dinner menu because lunch would be ending in 10 mins. I asked him, " If we are gonna be seated within 10 mins, then we should be able to order from that menu." He said well the kitchen has switched over to dinner now and walked away. We were under the assumption that he was going to get what he needed to seat us, but that wasn't the case. We were talking to each other, and I realized he didn't come back. I went to the reception desk to ask when we would be seated. One of the 2 females said we were 45 mins into our hour and fifteen min wait. I explained to her that we were told about being seated within 10 mins. She said well a reservation came in. I was like," wait, my sister tried to make a reservation and was told you didn't accept reservations!" She said "well we don't do same day reservations." I explained to her it wasn't the same day but she tried Friday. She then said "well we must not had any available." My issue with this is instead of apologizing for the mixup and mishap, she wanted to make excuses on why we weren't seated and why the reservation wasn't taken. Especially without the smugness. We were finally seated in about 15 mins later. Our waitress was not friendly at all. She appeared to not really want to be serving us. She didn't come back to check to see if we needed anything but once and as soon as one person asked from something she would turn to go get it without seeing if anyone needed anything, which was the case. Everyone's glasses stayed empty throughout the meal, and we didn't get one until we were ready to pay. Like I said earlier, the cook was nice and friendly, which is the only reason for the half star I wanted to give. We were there to celebrate my niece being baptized, and it was her first time going to Kanki, but she said she never wants to go back again. And neither do the rest of us!
