The hostess named Alex was the worst part of my dining experience. On Saturday December the 28th 2024 my nephew reserved a portion of the restaurant for his birthday party. From the first moment that we entered the restaurant I could tell by Alex's body language and posture that he wasn't the right person to have at the front of the restaurant. We reserved a room for a party of twenty people and as a group of polite people from another party started to trickle in the lobby became a little crowded. So we made a few phone calls to our expected guest to find out just how far away they were from arriving. So my nephews wife approached Alex and asked if we could be seated because she felt that we had reached a number of our expected guest list only to have Mr Alex say and I quote, Well you made reservations for twenty and now you're changing that number to 17 guests. Alex in the rudest way possible told Heidi that we needed to wait because the room was prepared for twenty and not the new number that she informed him about. Alex stated that no service would be rendered until the entire party arrived. It seems to me that Alex isn't a good listener and due to his over bearing sense of authority he continued to make the claim that we would have to wait. My nephew was outraged and ready to call the whole event off because of Alex's obnoxious behavior. So my sister approached the manager and explained to him that everyone that would be in attendance was already there. And just like clockwork we were allowed to take a seat. The cook was awesome and the waitresses were amazing. I had the hibachi shrimp and steak and it was delicious. The soup was hot and the salad was chilled and very fresh. The waitress kept our glasses full and our tables clear of unused dishes. The restaurant was super clean and the atmosphere was perfect. I tipped the cook and the waitress and on my way out I tipped the young lady that was working with Alex. I wanted to tip Alex but I decided not to. I think that Alex needs to be a dishwasher for just a little bit longer. His lack of being personable along with his inability to listen demands that he should work in a different area of this very fine establishment.

Ecerything is garbage about this place if you have experienced Kabutos before. The food is nasty. They give you a lot of rice and RAMEN noodles and give little thin pieces of meat. They grills are dirty and nasty!!! Left over food still on the grill and on the table!!!! Oh let’s not forget the little thick ass chunks of chicken at the bottom of the clear soup!!! Disgusting!!! Then they add gratitude to a party of 4 or more and if you are paying seperate they add it to both tickets!!!!! ITS BULLSHIT!!!! They are getting over on People and this place needs to be shut down immediately !!!! The drive to Kabutos in Greensboro would have been worth it and WAY BETTER!!! They add gratitude to a party of 6 or more. Food is WAAAYYY BETTER, and tables and grills are clean!!!! I will never return to this place EVER!! I feel they are taking advantage of the black people that dont know any better amd its sickening!!!! You can get way better service for the same price!!!quit supporting this place!!

My husband and I went here for the first time for dinner. The food was delicious. Not much of an atmosphere. However, the service was very good and the chef was also great. We had the large shrimp hibachi. I am giving 4 stars because the chef realized during the shrimp appetizer segment that he didn't have any for my husband. He told my husband numerous times, "I got you," but he didn't receive it. My husband even tipped him. My husband told the manager, Hero (not sure if that is the correct spelling, but it was the pronunciation. ) and was told to ask for him, and he would take care of it on our next visit. I am hoping that is the case because we did enjoy the meal and the large portions. They are also located nearby.
There is lots of free parking and a clean restroom.

Went to celebrate a family members birthday on a Saturday night. Restaurant wasn't busy at all which was nice but hindsight I learned why. Food was okay. Portion size was smaller than other Japanese style Restaurants. I ordered scallop meal. Chef served me a childs size Portion instead of an adult. Gave my servings to a couple that was splitting
a meal !!! 😡 Paid $35 for a kids meal!!! Very disappointed. Ate all of my dinner and was still hungry. The rest of my party had leftovers to take home.

It was my 11 year old daughters birthday, it was her first Hibachi experience and this location treated me well when I was in college 18 years ago so I came back here for her, she was thrilled, the food was wonderful - it's More expensive than I remember but everything is! My kids had a blast, the food was delicious and the cook put on a great show!!

My family and I visited Kabuto this past Sunday. We were sat within 10 minutes of arriving. The greeters were nice and very prompt. We were able to order very quickly and shortly after out waitress left our chef was at our table to start preparing the food. Everything was great except the mushroom miss soup. It had no flavor whatsoever. I would be back to try their other selections.

My family and I have been coming to Kabuto for a few years now. We are always happy with the friendly service and good food.
Drinks are tasty, cooks are fun and the manager is always welcoming and busy helping out.

We have come in groups as big as 9 multiple times and as small as 2 and a baby.
Sometimes there may be a wait, but not always.

Was disappointed compared to another kabuto location that was great. The filet I had didn't look like filet and had a lot of fatty pieces. Hardly any fun cooking esp for a birthday party. No onion fire rings, tossing things. etc. Felt beyond rushed. Offered boxes 2 min after the meat went on the plate and could they take check while still eating. Also the gas smell was bad.

We ordered the 16 piece sashimi and my wife and I both put two different kinds of fish in our mouth and simultaneously spit it out into a napkin and sent it back as an edible and foul. We all got hibachi, The steak was cooked right but had a poor low quality flavor. The noodles were hard and Obviously cooked way earlier in the day and had dried out and then prepared a second time. My sons food was brought out incorrectly three times and the third time before getting up to leave it made him cry because he was afraid he wasn’t gonna get food, and didn’t get to have food bc it was wrong again. From the front door to the table and bathroom and anywhere else you look you’ll find nothing but disgusting dirt grime and grit. Extremely low quality food even worse quality service. Ended up paying $100 for food. None of us ate And a sad child for her birthday dinner and another sad child who didn’t even get dinner. We drove to Chick-fil-A across the street. I don’t know who’s rating this place positively I would imagine it’s a paid shill or employees. Also did not appreciate the derogatory racist sign beside the front door towards Black people even though I am white, I was offended by the rude racist sign. There’s basically a sign that says if you’re black don’t come in.

Walked in and was seated right away. But when asked if the soup was vegetable broth the waiter profusely stated “onion” soup. As I ate it down, I noticed shredded chicken at the bottom. Asked for a manager and he nonchalantly responded “what do you want me to do, i don’t know why he tell you onion.” Like sir, I haven’t eaten meat in 9yrs… how about holding your staff accountable!

I was shocked to see shellfish so close to chicken and put on the grill at the same time as the steak and chicken. Not one cook was Japanese. While anyone can cook, I find it insulting to Japanese cuisine. That's why you could see all the short cuts being taken.

Sat at the bar to not only be acknowledged but once we got the bartender attention, he was rude as if he was upset we ask if he was making drinks. Furthermore, I’m assuming his buddy walked in which he greeted at the door and took care of his whole family. Once we saw this, instead of being rude, we found out he was the owner! We politely explained the treatment we received to him and in the middle of explaining how we weren’t even acknowledged and the moment we tried to order a drink he was throwing an attitude, he said thank you for your feedback and walked off! This is someone that does not care about their customers or experience! I highly recommend to not support this business as he feels he is above customer service. Red Ginger and other restaurants are far more nicer and more professional.

The owner honestly needs to be reminded that customers pays his bill. None of this was necessary. He could have simply apologized for ignoring 2 black guys sitting at his bar and asked us nicely what we wanted. Instead, he decided to show us his azz to kiss. Keep this in mind when you are supporting this place!

We were here on Valentine’s Day at the University location. This place is an old time favorite of mine and it had been a very long time since I visited.. The owner here is so pleasant and nice.. the food was phenomenal and the chef did a good job preparing it for us and was entertaining. We had a long wait since it was Valentines which is expected, but the owner was very accommodating.. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and already have to my neighbor.. I'm giving it a 5 because everything was good...just have a suggestion, when someone asks can you take the onions out of the veggies, that you should be able to accommodate that rather than say you can't and then you put each veggie on the grill individually...so, the one who can't have onions had to have the meal without veggies because you can't take the onions out...but someone who can't have eggs could get a separate order of rice...so if you can make some substitutes, you should be able to do the veggies as well...

I’ve had plenty of filet mignons at many restaurants. I didn’t get a filet mignon here but I paid extra for a 10 oz. Don’t lie to the customers. They open for dinner at five. We arrived right after five and were the first people there. There was about a 20 minute wait in which they were probably getting our food prepped. Another couple came and sat on the opposite end of the table with us. they prepared both parties food everything was great, well seasoned, and the steak was cooked to the correct temperature. The quality of this place has really gone down. I ordered a combination dinner to go and they forgot the shrimp appetizer and the soup. Glad I checked before leaving the parking lot, because it was a 15 minute drive back home. The “filet mignon” was tough and the scallops didn’t taste like authentic scallops. I’m really bummed, because I used to come here with my family for celebrations and always enjoyed it. I was looking forward to having a great dinner tonight. Not worth $41 (plus tip). :(

Terrible experience last night. I called twice this week to let them know we had a party of up to 15 coming in Saturday night at 8pm. They said that was fine as long as the whole party was there. We waited over an hour to be seated when they told us it would be 25 minutes. We ordered drinks from the bar and waited because we were celebrating 2 birthdays and were looking forward to dining there. Once seated we waited another 20 minutes to be greeted. Once service began the server told us they were out of salad, out of lemons, and out of limes per our request. The treatment was so strange and uncomfortable. Once the chef came in he kept a straight face and seemed inconvenienced by our presence. We told the chef whose birthday it was and he made a gesture with his wrist towards one of our birthday guests assuming he was gay. We even have the whole encounter on video!! We were all extremely offended, told the manager what happened and left the restaurant. Our group was diverse and it was a terrible feeling to be discriminated against. Worst experience ever at a restaurant, expected so much more!!

We will not be back to this restaurant. The cleanest thing in the whole place is the bathroom. They stopped cleaning there. Also, their hibachi noodles are spaghetti noodles! INSANE!!! Why can’t you afford to give people proper Yakisoba noodles when you charge over $25/plate? Also, the waitress kept asking if we wanted ranch on our salads but not other people of a different racial background. This place is run by a bunch of kids with attitude problems. MY sushi was wonderful. My HUSBAND'S food was nonexistent. Server (who was wonderful and VERY attentive) continued to come back and tell him, "just a little bit longer due to so many to go orders." Visited Charlotte to see family and wanted to try this restaurant. The service was subpar. The food was ok. The hostess was great, she made sure we had a room and was seated quickly. We had two waitresses and two chefs. One waitress was rude and ill mannered and one chef was rude and impatient. I unfortunately did not collect names or they would be listed specifically. Very hard to find true hibachi restaurants in Charlotte that give dinner and the show. This one was exceptional! We had a large party and they were able to accommodate us on a Friday night without reservations. The service was fast, accurate, and friendly. We had a kids table (11-12 yo) and an adult table. The chef for the kids was phenomenal. Engaging and a prankster! Those boys loved it! There was so much food and it was all delicious. Highly recommend!!

I’ve been going to Kabuto’s for many years. Time has certainly passed but this restaurant is timeless. The food always hits the spot. The owner is incredibly kind and hard working. My family loves him and his family. Love supporting good local businesses that have been around for a long time❤️

I recognize other reviews pointing out their signs.. rough crowds were coming in & the restaurant was trying hard to keep the environment family-friendly. Even the parking lot was turning into a place for people to come hang out without visiting the restaurant.

They’re definitely not racist 🙄

As far as seating…they have limited hibachi grill tables in the back. They’re attempting to accommodate as many parties as possible without allowing anyone to monopolize multiple tables all night (only open 3.5 hours daily currently). There are multiple tables in the main dining area & at the bar.

I highly recommend Kabuto’s to anyone that hasn’t tried it yet! Specifically the hibachi 🤌

Is it bad to rate a place based on wait time if you were told 30 mins but after 1 hr you were told that they cannot give a proper time when they can seat you. I think yes, this place deserves a low rating.
We have been here and granted we didn't have reservation but have been waiting for more than an hour and asked how long... NO answer. On top of the customers walking in in small groups get seated immediately. Really annoying. No on my list to visit again. Screw the the food the experience is ruined. Honesty is lost. Still waiting as the middle class syndrome kiked in.

After speaking to the owner I learned that this restaurant doesn’t take reservations and that is OK. But the gentleman who said he was the owner was rude to me and then hung up on me. I then called back after getting hung up on and I was cool but safe to say I won’t be coming here for my graduation dinner, all because I was treated poorly on the phone. The food is great but I am surprised I got treated so poorly on the phone. I will give them another shot but probably not this location! Only my experience, I don’t think others would get the same.

My wife and I had a horrible experience today at Kabutos. We were denied service for the first time ever at any restaurant. We originally had a party of 15, however we were advised that only parties of 6 are being accommodated. There were currently only 6 of us there at the time so we agreed to dine with the 6 of us. The managers/owners refused to serve the 6 of us using the excuse that we said 15 in the beginning. I repeatedly said we respect their policy and would like to patronize their restaurant as a group of six. They continued to deny us service with no other explanation. Please do not patronize this place as they do not treat all patrons equally. We went to Nikkos Japanese Restaurant which is way nicer and cleaner. I will be posting to all social media sites also.

We frequent Kabuto often and have never had problems until last Friday. We ordered the vegetarian hibachi meal and both became extremely sick with food poisoning, immediately the next day. Unfortunately, still dealing with food poisoning symptoms. Please be careful and mindful about what you’re eating from this establishment.

Black men be careful at this restaurant they will automatically assume you smell like marijuana. I've witnessed this more than one time on different occasions. Today I witnessed three caucasian families walk right past the .Front desk associate and everything was OK and then a black family walked in all the sudden. It smelt like marijuana if I were you I would go to a different location. And I know what the smell of marijuana is. I stepped in and told the manager they did not small like marijuana.

Do not patronize this restaurant, they are clearly extremely racist. I watch them seat a family of seven who was caucasian with no problems, questions or comments. We were denied seating on a Thursday night when the host claimed there were severely understaffed (a lie). We asked to be seated separately from my sister’s family since they won’t accommodate a party larger than 6 people. I asked them to break us up as they saw fit. They even called the police on us because my son said they were doing it to us because we were black. We didn’t arrive together, we aren’t paying together nor leaving together. I told the hostess and manager that we weren’t asking for any accommodations to be made… none. We weren’t trying to sit together or even at the same time. Just to be able to eat in the restaurant and we were denied. I’m NEVER going to beg an establishment to allow me to spend my money.

The mangers/hosts (both of the men that wear suits and stand at the host stand) were extremely rude. They had an attitude because we said we had “6 people, well 5 people because one is a baby’”(under 12months old). They were not busy and there wasn’t anyone else waiting to be seated. The manager got snappy and had an attitude when speaking with us. Then continued to side eye us during the wait, and while eating. He was EXTREMELY rude a third time to the birthday girl. We were calm and polite and did nothing against policy, or to warrant the disrespect and horrible treatment we received. Very unprofessional, we will not come here again. When the managers treat customers this way how can they properly lead a team and run a business?

Sure, the menu says "no substitutions," but when our entire table asked about omitting the onions, the owner told our chef they have to cook them with the veggies. We understand this isn't Burger King, but seriously, I never plan to pick out chunks of onions at $30 per plate ever again! As a side note, the food was fine, but there was no show (?!?!) and that's the whole reason you'd go to a place like this. We kept having to ask for the waitress and honestly none of the staff seem happy to be there. We DO NOT recommend this hibachi place. Spend your money at any of the other places in Charlotte or the University area. After a lengthy wait, we should've just left once our table heard we were going to have to deal with the onions.

We were told that they don’t do parties of more than 6 as we were 2 separate parties of 5 and 5 and the short male host would not seat, was rude AF and would even look at us or allow us explain that we were not one party and hard no intentions on sitting together. HORRIBLE RUDE AND DISAPPOINTING. I will never spend a dirty penny here again.
