Went to dinner last night and all the staff seemed tired and overworked. The lady who answers the phone has horrible customer service. Once we got there she just threw the menus on the table and walked away. It looks like they only have one hibachi cook so it seems impossible to get a reservation for hibachi which is a shame considering that’s kinda the point of the restaurant. We had to sit at a regular table and the food was bland. Definitely recommend checking out other hibachi restaurants in Rochester (Kobe, Sakura Home, Plum Garden) they’ll never turn you down for real hibachi.

Food took around 45 minutes to come out. I ordered the Spicy Maki Combo which is a collection of 3 different spicy sushi roll orders, but the order I got had 3 of the same roll. Our waitress left at some point and we never saw her again.

Was really cool vibe. Sad we were too late for hibachi. Love the visibility of the sushi bar & watching them make it. 👌

I was disappointed the server didn't know if the Sake Don was served like nigiri or like sashimi, and despite the pictures (and our showing the pictures to her), she didn't know and had to ask. We were told yes, it was nigiri, yet, I was served a pile of rice and a pile of sashimi and told of I mold the rice with my hands it will look just like the picture. I was honestly pissed off. 😤 There's no nigiri anywhere on the menu. Makes no sense.

I may try again for the hibachi experience because the quality of the rice and salmon was clearly high quality. Delicious. Will do again, despite the 1st frustrating experience.

For the most part the food was very good and everyone at my table orders and we saw the find get made and everyone else got their meal besides me. I asked for steak and at first they gave me shrimp idk if it was for everyone to try but still after that seeing everyone with food they didn’t give me my steak and the chest just left and I had to wait and ask the server and they had to go to the back and make me the steak because they forget.

The food was absolutely excellent, as well as the service and dining atmosphere. However, the ladies restroom was my only true concern. The stall walls are TRANSPARENT… I had never felt so uncomfortable using the bathroom before, as me and another woman were both using two separate stalls but could see one another’s figures completely. I felt disgusted and embarrassed for the both of us. I will be coming back, but will NOT be using the restroom!

Second Visit:

We made a reservation for this visit.
I specified Vegetable hibachi with double rice. The waitress confirmed it back to me and I repeated my order again.
When the chef came out, he didn’t have an order for double rice. He waved over the waitress and she rolled her eyes. She brought fried rice in a bowl from the back, it was undercooked and under seasoned. I asked to have the double rice removed and to send back the rice. She asked why and rolled her eyes again when I told her the issue.
The chef was good, but seemed rushed.
It’s easy to give attitude and poor service knowing that gratuity is added automatically. She didn’t deserve 20%.

First Visit:

At 5:10 pm we were told that Hibachi is unavailable. There was 1 sushi table in the restaurant seated.
All the Hibachi tables were empty and totally clean.
Why open a Hibachi restaurant and then refuse Hibachi service?
Apparently, they only want Sushi customers.
The experience was frustrating.

The hibachi server Jaime (she’s my favorite cause we share a name) was AMAZING I got to know all of the other lovey lady’s when they came to sing happy birthday to me and my kids think their names were willow and sky!!! Did not give equal portions to all, other family got much larger portions even though ordered same thing but they ordered alcoholic drinks and we did not. The food is pretty mid level for rochester area sushi. If you're out on the east side it may be one of the only options. I might recommend sakura garden in perinton if youre out this way. Or for a step up and a night out Shema Sushi which is top of the line in my opinion. I stopped in to Umi for the first time in years to have lunch here. The hostess was busy chatting with another customer there were few in the restaurant. Then proceeded to inform me they are open until 2 but stop seating at 130 she sat me anyhow but I couldn't help but feel rushed when she came right back to the table to see if I had picked my choices. She had a gnarly cough sitting at sushi counter. Was a bit off putting to say the least. The oshinko was so large it was almost tough to eat and the seaweed was a bit fishy. One roll was missed entirely The super man roll and nigiri were ok. The waitress returned with the check but never asked if i wanted a drink refill. The service by the chefs was ok. The service by front of house needs work. Another couple walked in at almost 2 p.m. and were sat at the bar. And the waitress was chatting it up with them I paid and left the money up front.

My family and I eat at this establishment very frequently because their food tastes amazing. Unfortunately, we have had several bad experiences with one specific waitress. This waitress is fairly young and she has a very rude manner when talking with customers or dealing with issues that customers bring to her attention. The way that this employee handled the situation was very rude and truly ruined my experience. Great food but awful server!

If you want your overpriced sushi to be a huge ball of rice with tiny amount of fish, this is your place. The proportions were ridiculous and I have never experienced sushi like that and we eat sushi a lot. I literally left a bowl of rice on the plate by cutting rice of nigiri. To top it off, the staff was banging around with dish cart and sweeping around us as we are trying to eat. We were there a little after 8 pm, there were not a lot of customers but still 2 hrs before closing. The entire experience was just disappointing. Cool ambiance though. This is definitely one time and never going back experience.

The food was good. My family of 6 adults was sat at a table with a family of 4 with 2 small children. The soup and salad were tasty before the hibachi. The rolls were quite large, as were the special drinks. The only complaint would be to have more options for the hibachi, preferably (such as tofu). But it was a nice experience. My family and I came in for my grand daughters birthday we came in a little early before our reservation, we were greeted horrible by the owner we asked could we be seated a little earlier THE OWNER SAID NOPE! kept on doing what he was doing then when our reservation time came he still made us wait an additional 15/20 mins we wanted to leave but we haven’t eaten yet and it was a late reservation by the time we got seated the waitress couldn’t take our order correctly she was confused we still had to wait on the chef the amount of food was ridiculous we paid so much money for scrap they put on our plates then we realized after the fact, they put three steaks on the grill for 5 adults steak/shrimp dinners this use to be my favorite restaurant not anymore with the amount of money you pay here your food should be like a buffet on your plate just RIDICULOUS as far as the owner he should be glad someone driving that far to eat there he’s just UNGRATEFUL we were very dissatisfied! We usually have enough food to take home when 4/7 yo kids don’t have enough from an adult entree there’s a problem.

I was so disappointed with my experience. I brought my 4 year old here to celebrate and the OWNER was the nastiness human being I’ve met in awhile ! He was so rude and unkind ! What’s insane is I witnessed him greeting every race except blacks with compassion. He literally treated us like he didn’t want us in his establishment, like we were beneath him! Meanwhile he’s taking shots behind the bar and laughing with coworkers while we wait. After waiting 30 mins after our reservation we get seated and the waitress was rude. To top it all off they added $30 tip that’s automatically included for such poor customer service. Had it not been my baby birthday celebration I would have left. I thought so highly of this place but I will NEVER return. Such a tasteless place . I DON’T RECOMMEND

Person who answered the phone said "Hold on, let me double check that we can do 8." Confirmed that 8 was ok and I booked the reservation. They called me back an hour later to inform me that they have a private party at 8 and have to cancel my reservation. I will recommend that no one goes here. Visited 12/30 with 4 other people to celebrate 2 birthdays. Everyone except 1 person ordered hibachi. The entire hibachi experience finished and everyone had their food boxed before the waitress even addressed the fact that 1 guest still hadn't received their sushi. The response was 'the sushi place tends to take a bit longer' but an hour for 3 rolls? The waitress refused to make eye contact with the guest who was waiting on their food and instead spoke to the person next to them. When the sushi did finally come out the rice tasted old and the avocado was not fresh. We were given no discount for the unreasonable wait and poor service.

What was supposed to be an enjoyable experience for my daughter’s fourth birthday, turned out to be a frustrating night. I have been eating at Umi’s since 2012, as I have always enjoyed the overall ambiance. However, yesterday evening was unacceptable service for the price I paid for what appeared to be a serving for a toddler. I have a seafood allergy, which I always inform the waitresses ahead of time. In the past, the waitress would inform the chef, as the chef would still cook my food on the grill, but move it aside and away from the others. The chef would also use other utensils to touch my food once he begin to cook the others food. And I always be sure to compensate him at the conclusion of our dinner for going over and beyond to accommodate. On yesterday (12-22-23), they decided to cook my meal in the back. I ordered half steak & the chicken hibachi. First the food was cold, secondly, they literally gave me four pieces of steak and four pieces of chicken, as there was one whole piece of broccoli with onions that were supposed to be the veggies. Not to forget, one small serving of rice. By no means do I expect to have food spilling outta my plate, but when my four year old has more food on her plate than me, that is a problem. When I questioned the portion size to the waitress, her only solution to the problem was to charge me an addition charge to have a small portion of chicken added to my order, which was ridiculous. I paid $133.00s for a dinner with an additional $10.00 tip for the waitress and $5.00 for the chef, but still had to stop by another restaurant to pick up some takeout. I have never been one to complain about a meal or the price for a meal, but at least do right by the customers. This was my first disappointing experience at this restaurant. I was more shocked than anything. Feel free to respond.

Had reservation. Seated finally after close to 30 minutes after our reservation time. Hostess seemed annoyed. Waitress was very slow. Food came out for hibatchi and my dinner wasn’t there. I asked the chef multiple times where my filet was. He said I didn’t order it, which I did. Waitress was no where to be found. Once she finally came back over everyone was done eating and I had no meal. They also charged extra $7 for extra rice which I didn’t get and added in a 20 percent gratuity. Won’t be back. Usually go there 3-4 times a year. Service has gone way down hill and so has the food and portion size.

I want to lead this with: I go here every year for my birthday since 2014... it has always been a pleasure, except this most recent time. We went 11/19/23 as a party of 6 at 2pm. I got there myself early so i could have the time set for 2 so our party wasnt waiting around, and then went to the bar. Waited at the bar for about a half hour and no bartender or anyone showed up to serve us. Once seated at the tabled the server we had didn't know the menu, a few of us asked for stuff that was on the menu and were promptly told they don't have it and we had to show her that menu item from our phones for her to realize what we were asking for. We only saw her 2 maybe 3 times in total for the whole time we were there. The chef we had rushed through the presentation and our food was either undercooked (the vegetables and rice) or overcooked (the chicken was rubbery and the steak cooked to med well) then the check came and we asked to split it up because we were multiple groups paying differently and we were told "we don't do that" and we needed to do it ourselves. I've NEVER been told that before here. The server didn't want to split it because she gets an automatic party gratuity of 20% and she barely deserved $5 for the the whole experience. On top of the fact that she was wearing a shirt that exposed her midriff. It's probably the worst experience I've had there and I most likely will be going somewhere else for my birthday celebration in the future.

Nice atmosphere, couldn’t get in for hibachi so took a normal table for 4. Seated right away but from there out our experience was not great. A very long wait to get our order put in then over an hour for food to come out. Strangely, they brought the adults hot meals to the table but took 40 more minutes for the kids sushi to be delivered so the adults food was cold by the time the cold sushi arrived. Only one sushi chef on a Saturday night??? Really? The waitress was nice but for the wait, sub par quality of food and very high price for what you get it’s clear we’ll never go back. Even if it hadn’t been slow, the food is wildly over priced for what it is. Not bad but not any better then an average food court for at least double the cost.
Lastly the bathrooms were dirty and the ladies room stalls are divided by frosted glass walls and doors so you can see more then you should in the neighboring stall.

My boyfriend and I ordered the Umi Supreme, which is filet mignon, lobster, shrimp and scallops. We both ordered our steak rare. It was given to us very well done. The cook didn't understand when I asked for him to make ours rare again. I had to flag down our waitress when I finally found her and explained about our steak. She said she might be able to have another one made for me because it was sitting on my plate, but told me that my boyfriend couldn't because he ate his steak. I explained that he ate it because he was hungry and we couldn't find a waitress. She was rude but brought me one side of filet finally. I will never go back again because she was so incredibly rude and wouldn't let me speak to anyone else. Unfortunate because I enjoyed getting sushi there throughout the years. Deeply disappointed.

Sadly, very disappointed in this meal
The waitress was either over-sat ( Sunday at 6:30), under experienced, or poor at her job; requiring 2-3 requests each need along with needing to be asked to begin my order and to return to finish my order.
The "shrimp" tempura was good, but only had 2 shrimp and 4 pieces of vegetables...how about for $13, I get 4-6 shrimp. Disappointing.
The soup was a tofu-base, and the salad was from a bag w/typical orange dressing. Nothing unexpected, nor delicious.
The Sushi Lover, for $30 was so incredibly boring, warm, and made with dried out rice that I truly would have better enjoyed a Wegmans platter of nine pieces, for 1/2 the price.

If there is a next time, I'll definitely do hibachi and try some more interesting sushi rolls.. The prices are high but it's a touristy area.
There's much better sushi elsewhere in the area.

BEWARE OF THIS RESTAURANT ADDING A 20% TIP WHEN YOU GET THE bill.
I am pro tip since I once worked at a restaurant many years ago but you have to earn your tip.
The server (girl) had a terrible attitude. You can tell she does not like what she is doing. I also think is a management issue.
Wont be coming again. No reason to be forced to give a 20% tip for bad service.

Will never go to this restaurant. We made a reservation yesterday afternoon (5/9) for 17 people at 7pm for a birthday dinner. Whoever answered the phone sighed and said okay to taking us but asked how we were paying. I said we’d most likely be splitting into separate checks and she cut me off and said they will only split it into 2 checks. When I asked why she said it would be too much of a hassle and started telling me to just use Venmo. Not a huge deal so we went ahead with the reservation and would sort it out after paying. I have never been to a Japanese Steakhouse before so I did not know to ask about the amount of cooks and servers we’d have at our table and that it was based off of the number of people in our party. We had a number change to 10 so I called to inform them last night it was lower. Due to some mixup on dates 4 of the 7 said they’d be able to join us after all so I called again (12:30 today 5/10- 6 1/2 hours before our reservation) to inform them it’d be 14 people after all, thinking I’d be similar to a normal restaurant and be no problem. I was told very rudely that they would not accommodate us due to me changing to 10 people last night. At this point I asked to speak to the manager and she informed me that she was the manager in a very short tone. When I started inquiring why they couldn’t add the 4 back in she said that if I wanted 14 people to come then I’d have to make 2 people sit at another table away from our party but that they will only seat 12 of us together. I asked how they could originally take 17 at one table but now not take 14, which is when I was informed that parties over 12 people get 2 chefs and 2 servers. I asked why we were never told that in the beginning because I would have held off on changing the party size until today and was very rudely told “Well you didn’t ask so I don’t know what to tell you but we will only seat 12”. If I don’t ask the question, or in this case didn’t know to ask, why aren’t they informing people of this at the time they make the reservation? When I asked this of the manager she in a very mocking tone said “Yea, we will see about changing that in the future” which is when I decided to end the conversation since she clearly was being unwilling to see any perspective but her own. I honestly feel as if they didn’t want to deal with our large party from the start, and I would never dine at a place with such rude and disrespectful staff and management. They should really make sure their customers are well informed at the time of making the initial reservation for a large party, they can’t expect everyone to automatically know to ask those questions. And they should really reevaluate who is managing their team at this restaurant because they clearly have a problem with their attitude and are not setting a good example for the rest of their staff. Very disappointed.

Appetizer came out after the entree. Hibachi steak came out ice cold. When I VERY politely told the waitress that I wouldn't be able to wait for another meal to be prepared and that she could just take it off the bill, she informed me that Friday's are super busy and I should just "go to McDonald's instead". I've probably sent 1 meal back in 40 years, but I honestly can't remember ever being treated like such garbage.

Don’t expect to enjoy sushi and hibachi in the same visit.

Was really hoping for a positive experience as this is one of the few sushi places in Victor, but unfortunately the service and restrictions were unbelievable. We had come to meet family for hibachi dinner and immediately upon checking in we were “in no uncertain terms“ told that if any of our party arrived more than 10 minutes later than our reservation, we would not be able to be seated. Being that we were 10 minutes early and our group consisted of six responsible adults, we weren’t concerned but rather surprised at the bold statement by the hostess. (Whats wrong with “hello” or “welcome”?)

We let this go and were seated on time without any issue at all. Upon placing our order (all hibachi items) two people in our party asked for a sushi item as an appetizer- absolutely nothing unusual, and they were two rolls off of their menu. We were then informed that sushi cannot be served at a hibachi table. What?! I could completely understand if those ordering didn’t also order a full hibachi meal in addition (but we did). I have no idea how these policies were put into place but for us, it might have been worth going elsewhere for less “rules”
and better customer service We would have loved to enjoyed their sushi offerings along with hibachi as their food was genuinely good but having to choose spoiled it for us.

Plates and silver were barely clean and they had one server for the whole restaurant at 6pm on a Thursday. He ran around and made sure all were attended to, but still only saw him a couple times. The food was typical Habachi fare and was good enough. I have a real problem with the automatic 20% tip added to the bill. We were a party of 4, not a large group. I tend to be a pretty generous and always cash tipper, and I would absolutely have given the server 20% because he was stretched so thin and still made his rounds and was friendly, but any place that mandates gratuities regardless of party size gets a demerit from me.

Restaurant Management - needs to be more attentive and nix the ridiculous tip mandate.

I've been here before and did not have a problem, however the last time I was there with my friends it was a nightmare. We had a reservation but was accidentally made for one less than we show up for, they refused to accommodate us even though there was only one other party there and there was other hibachi tables unoccupied. There were also two chefs that night so it is not like they only had one that would have to bounce between the tables. We were told one of us had to leave the restaurant, which is unacceptable. Additionally once the check came we were told it was house rules that we could not split the check to which my friends and I and the other party did not know ahead of time and were quite surprised at. Especially since the last time I was there we could split checks so it made no sense and was quite frustrating as I had to put the whole bill on my card and I do not have a whole lot of money so it was quite stressful. I will not be returning to this establishment and while the food was good it is not worth the trouble. It is quite disappointing since the previous time there was no issue, but it seems that this establishment would rather lose business than make some simple accommodations to its customers.

It's a shame, that how they treat their customers will make it so we never return, even though the food was actually good. In fact our chef was great! Super funnet and engaging. However, Whoever is running the place needs to either find a new manager or they themselves need to be replaced, maybe both. They will single handedly be responsible for ruining what used to be a great place.

Hostess was very nice…I asked her if we could have hibachi, it was our daughters 25th birthday. She said, of course! Let me check with my manager!
I see her talk with the manager…the manager just looks at us and shakes her head…wouldn’t come over and explain why. All the hibachi tables were half full and haven’t eaten yet. The hostess told us if we want hibachi, we should go by black n blue. We decided to just sit at a table…
10 minutes of waiting…our waitress takes our drink order. When she brings them back, she takes our food order. We order an appetizer, a flaming volcano drink and entrees. The appetizer comes out, very hot, very good. Our flaming volcano still sitting at the bar. 10 minutes later…We finish the appetizer…volcano still at bar. My husband gets our drink himself…watered down, no flaming anything, no bartender. Brings it to our table. Finally served our meal. It’s cold, not even a little warm…steak hibachi over well down and chewy…we ordered medium rare. Waitress asks how our meal is…we tell her and she asks if we want a new one? Ya think??? 15 minutes later…our daughter is finished with her meal and now we get a hot new entree. We finish it quick. We promptly get our bill for $150 for garbage service and garbage meal. Also, thank you for the up charge of $3 for asking for a Collins glass lol crazy!!! Umi’s was always our ‘go to’ place for special occasions…never again.

2 different experiences ... Great food and service at the hibachi. Thankfully, chef and server saved our birthday celebration. Possible improvement is that when someone orders veggies or shrimp as main entree they should be served first so they weren't waiting for 10 others who already have their main course. Same customer kept receiving larger portions than others. Overall, they were good. Thankfully food was delicious. Only reason review isn't just 1 star. However, Horrendous service/communication at the front desk/on the phone!

Reservation scheduled 2 weeks ahead, 1 hour before reservation, was called to tell us they needed to change the arrival time 1/2 hour later ... No answers why, just told doesn't matter when we arrive, we wouldn't be seated until the later time. Arrived at the new time. Immediately asked in an aggressive manner "Well, is your whole party here yet?" Yes ... All walked in together. Without looking up, she just told us we'd have to wait (no explanation or time indicated)"Just go wait in the bar" (told, not asked). Front desk person then sat at bar with other employees ignoring customers (3 groups there) and talked just to coworkers. Same individual then took a shot at bar. A coworker who was off that day (who the front desk person was speaking to) caught our eye 10 minutes later and indicated that we could go to the table. As we stood up, the front desk worked looks over her shoulder at us and then turned back to him said "yeah, I was going to tell them when I was ready". The off hours employee then let us know that he did work there and that we could go to the table. Girl rolls her eyes, huffs, gets off bar chair and doesn't acknowledge us then walks back to the front desk. Boxes stacked in corners and bar chairs just pushed up against each other like someone just pushed furniture to side but 3 out of 5 chairs were dirty with actual food on the seats.

Later time slot (now 8:30 instead of 8:00) meant they were cleaning the actual restaurant spaces when we were actually handed our full plate. Literally kitchen worker came over to hibachi with a pot of water and scrubber and started cleaning as we were still having our plate handed to us.

A place where being totally unprofessional is a compliment…..(with the exception of the bar tender). I had a reservation at one of the Hibachi table at 6.30pm on Saturday 28th of Jan 2023….. we had our seats at 7.00pm and until 7.45pm no one was taking care of us!!!
One Star for the review is too much!
This place deserve (minus) -5 stars!
And suddenly one of the waiter, not sure about his or her role, is offering a free dinner for all of us after my complaints!!!!
Too late, you can’t buy customer confidence with this.
More to come….it is 7.38pm and no food in front of us!!!!

Service was extremely slow. We sat in the dining area because the hibachi was fully booked. My hibachi steak and shrimp was completely cold by the time it finally arrived. I just ended up splitting my wife's chicken katsu which was at least warm.

The dining area was extremely loud with children screaming and adults watching football on their phones with the volume up. Not the restaurant's fault, but worth mentioning.

As a manager, server and bartender in the food service industry for a large corporate restaurant I hold professionalism in high regard. Tonight for my dads birthday dinner we had the worst service I have ever experienced. Our server was cursing, and acting like he was on the streets rather than at work. He slid lemon in a bar glass across the table to me and it slammed into my drink nearly knocking it over and sarcastically said, “my bad”. That isn’t a sincere apology , and quite frankly very unprofessional. Throughout our experience our server checked on us once. Didn’t ask if we needed any refills on drinks, or even if our meal was okay. We never received refills over the hour we were there. The food was basic and edible at best. We would not recommend this to anyone in my own family let alone strangers.

One of the worst dining experiences. A few notables:
1. Appetizers came out after the meal
2. Drink orders were placed that never came out (had to remind the staff several times, were not served until after food)
3. 20% gratuity added without being notified prior which would not have been an issue if the service was up to par
4. When addressing concerns with the staff the served stated “that’s not my problem, I don’t care”
5. Food quality was far below expectations
6. Manager on duty offered no solutions and said she could “maybe” do something for the next visit
7. Restaurant started to shut down 1.5hrs before closing, not allowing for additional services (while still seating new tables and denied additional service to those already seated)
Overall the customer service was appalling and the entire table of 12, with 3 separate parties, left feeling disrespected and disappointed.

Update I would give 0 stars. For service and attitude. Service was lack luster. Drinks had to be requested multiple times before being delivered over a 20 min period. Our table of 11 had 1 group of 5 and everyone else hays separate checks. At the end there was automatic 20% gratuity. No warning. When asking about it and expressing displeasure the waitress said, "not my problem".
So I decided to Karen it up and ask for the manager. Well they do not approve of that kind of behavior (of the employee) so next time I come in they will so something special. 1. You didn't find out who I am so how? 2. I won't be back. 3. This sucks because the food is good...4. my fiance was by the front and heard the wait staff complaining about it and saying how they didn't care.

Amazing! First place it is very rare that you find a place that not only has great food but also great service! Coming from Long Island and eating out in the city of NY all the time, I don't find a lot of places in upstate that will please my palate but this place has well seasoned, tasty food. I was also hosting a birthday event here and the staff was beyond helpful and accommodating!!! I haven't been to a place that meet these standards in a long time. Beyond grateful for their help setting everything up today and getting everything to run smoothly!
