No frills, hands down the best omakase place I’ve been to in NYC. Beautiful portions, amazing pricing, and the Japanese uni just hit. Their omakase set is out of the world. There were a few appetizer dishes before the nigiri came, and each piece was both fresh and unique. Super generous slices, each bite a rich explosion of flavor. The rice itself also had a perfect amount of vinegar.
Atmosphere 10/10
Iconically located inside a cafe, without their own storefront, it’s the most unassuming yet homey spot for omakase. The owner truly said quality of fish is all I care about and I’m all here for it. That’s when you know the focus is on the food.
Service 10/10
Super friendly and quick service, appreciate the hospitality!!

Toro scallion with uni on top (you have to order both to make this)
The sushi chef is a gem…
My recommendation:
If you are in Brooklyn and looking for sushi come here.
If you are in Manhattan and looking for sushi come here.
If you are in Staten Island… nm.
If you are in the Bronx and looking for sushi come here.
If you are in queens.. you already know what to do.
We got the 10 piece “sushi takesushi”, uni, Toro, and the shrimp appetizer…damn. After this I think he’s now my favorite sushi chef. The rice is also great!!

As a Japanese, I was a bit disappointed by the quality and freshness of the sushi and did not feel like it was worthwhile, especially since we came all the way by train having nothing to do around the neighborhood and the bill was 120 dollars for 2, which is not cheap.
The skill of the sushi making must be good and the service was good, but the fish lacked the shine and vibrant color that it should have. (Ex. tuna is dark) I am not sure but maybe because the fish is mostly brought from Japan and it comes frozen (?)
I’ve had better sashimi that I’ve ordered from Maine and I personally don’t think being imported from Japan is so important if it lacks the freshness.
Also, the taste of shrimp was great, except that while I was chewing, I could feel the sand-like stuff in my mouth, not sure if the shrimp was properly prepared.
It is a very old sushi place, I hope that it was just my experience and this place will keep improving and keep on thriving.

I’ve been supporting Takesushi for many years and I was so disappointed by this meal. We came for dinner and ordered sushi set B and Takesushi set along with the fried chicken, bill came out to $118. The fish was not up to par, many of them tasted off and the yellow tail for sushi set b was so badly and misshapenly made I was shocked. Takesushi used to be a favorite for me with its fresh and great cuts, masterfully put together by a true artisan. I’m not sure if it’s because they are Sharing a space with the cafe which makes it awkward feeling and they have an issue with storage or some other underlying issue happened when I was there but I was not happy with my meal. Two stars for service

A chill Thursday night pairing with the best Japanese food. We ordered fried japanese eel (tempura), fried chicken wings, sunnyside salad, sushi set A, chirashi. Everything tastes soooo good!
Sunnyside salad (for 2) is huge and good for 3 people sharing as appetizers. There are some fresh raw fish on the salad. It is great for summer.
The chicken wings are so flavorful, juicy, and great with beer.
Chirashi and sushi set are as good as usual. The scallop tastes creamy and sweet!
Eel tempura come with some purple yam. I have to said they really know how to make tempura, the coat is thin and perfectly covered the eel. Very satisfied meal and every bite you tasted the fresh.
The server and the chef are all so friendly and now they accept credit card! Yay!

It seems the tiktok hype has died down and it's back to the regulars now. I go frequently for lunch and sometimes for dinner. The quality is unchanged from their old location and the owner is still as friendly as ever. They hired a few more waitstaff to handle customers so it's a bit faster now.
The quality of sushi is fantastic for the location, a neighborhood Japanese restaurant in Sunnyside. You can't compare this to Michelin starred omakase in Manhattan because that's not what this is. The homey neighborhood vibes and some pretty good fish (sometimes hand carried from Japan) are what you come here for. And the tempura. The tempura master here is the true hidden gem.

A true gem in the New York City sushi scene. For Takesushi, it’s not about maximizing profit, or capitalizing on the popularity of sushi, but instead bringing joy to the customers. It shows in the quality of the fish, their prices and their service. Glad they were able to open back up despite the issue with their original location.

Their new location is nice. The menu is exactly the same and still fresh and delicious💖⭐️. I live 30 minutes away but this is the only spot ill eat sushi from. Other sushi stores in bayside and flushing cant compare to the quality Takesushi has.

This is the first review I’ve ever written, and I’m not usually one to complain as someone in hospitality, but for whatever reason, our server today just dropped the ball at almost every step of the way throughout our entire dining experience.
It was our first time there and we had been wanting to try the sushi for quite a while. They gave us a delicious appetizer of smoked fish. The sushi was deliciously made with fresh ingredients, but the service made for the most unpleasant experience I’ve had at a Japanese restaurant. There was some signage saying cash only, and we only had $50 on us.
We just wanted eight pieces of the $3-4 a la carte sushi, and was careful to specify that we wanted two pieces of the eel from China, which was half the price of the Japanese eel. There was a language barrier with the server so we explained our order patiently a few times, but somehow she still came to tell us that the regular Japanese eel was not available. That’s what we wanted anyway, fine. Only after the food comes out does she inform us that it was the China eel instead that was out of stock. Not sure if it was some scheme to upcharge us to $8 a piece or a total misunderstanding.
Another staff member told us we could pay with card, so we did that. We were charged for the eel that we initially thought was out of stock. I accepted that, and told her that we had been trying to order the Chinese eel, and had said China multiple times to clarify since the ordering process was so confusing. She just said “that’s fine,” and mumbled the quietest apology while smiling unapologetically the whole time.
When she came to take the check and my card to charge, she asked me whether the tip would be cash or card. Then she asked me to fill it in before she charged me. Then she stood over from me while I awkwardly filled out the tip. Then she reads the tip out loud, “$8?” (20%) while charging my card. Then she hovers over me to make sure I sign the receipt.
Completely unprofessional behaviour from a server. The food was delicious but the service left such a sour impression that I will not be returning to this establishment.

Can’t wait to come back to this gem of a sushi spot! The owner is so genuine and passionate about his craft. He offered us his homemade smoked salmon to start off our dinner and also homemade Japanese soft chocolate at the end! Everything was so fresh with satisfying portions. Couldn’t recommend this place more!!

Home of the $89 sushi
Heads Up.. this place is attempting to set new standards in pricing for sushi in the area
I was charged $89 for a typical sushi-sashmi combo, for one (to-go) when visiting this location recently
The bill came to over $100 without drinks or anything else other then (1) addon Dragon roll.
All of which came in a brown paper to-go bag, that included a napkin and the typical splinter sticks. That's it. Have a nice day Bye 👋

The new location is in the back of the cafe! We went for lunch and got the special B. While simple flavor wise, it was some of the best fish I’ve ever had, beyond a great value. Bring cash, they weren’t able to take card the day we went. Owner is very nice and staff is very attentive.

I’m so happy Takesushi is back! For years, they have remained my top pick for satisfying my sushi and sashimi cravings. Their quality and freshness never fail to amaze me! I’ve never had a disappointing experience. Highly recommended!
My go-to orders are: Kaisendon, chirashi, Sushi set B, salmon teriyaki.
Favorite appetizers: deep fried oysters, Chilean sea bass, mackerel, black cod, sliced tuna with ponzu sauce, agedashi tofu.

I'll be the first to admit that I was hesitate to try the "new" version of Takesushi given my last review on another food platform. But I'm so glad I did b/c they've definitely made some changes for the better since their popularity last year. The marketing was better online, so fans of Robin got the most recent updates, the service has improved with more staff, and the food quality, luckily, has stayed the same if not better. All these changes have made a difference and I've been back several times in the last 7 months and also, with friends. My go-to remains the lobster miso soup, Sushi A platter, Bruce or Alex rolls, and of course, the omakase.
I'm not an omakase expert but I know what I like and don't like. I also understand what a great value is and Takesushi delivers on it. The $150 omakase is an absolute deal with 4 apps and 12 pieces + hand roll. Robin's selection of fish, his preparation with an emphasis on the quality, and the portion sizes cannot be beat. While some of the apps are on the more adventurous side for me, I'm willing to try them here b/c of the quality.
Tonight, we had some rare treats most especially the rare white shrimp served two different ways and the best otoro/fatty tuna that tasted like seafood butter. Lastly, don't get me started on the Brazilian chocolate bon bon dessert (if it hasn't sold out), which my friends and I have argued should be eaten in 1-2 bites, NOT several mini bites. The texture and temperature consistency are mind blowing.
I'm lucky to have Takesushi remain in the neighborhood and happy to see they're getting the hype they deserve. This place is a gem and applaud all the changes!

The food quality and service was disappointing. Sushi platter looked very different than photos on Yelp and Google. Ordered Sushi Platter B for dinner and I noticed uni wasn’t include which was different than what the menu stated. The waiter then said to me that they could switch the salmon roe for the uni if this was what I preferred. I was a bit intrigued the way they made it sounded like giving me uni was based on my preference. Anyways, the fish quality was below average and the presentation was sloppy. For the same price range there are better options in the neighborhood.

After seeing all the hype about this place, we decided to drive an hour to try it. We arrived at 5pm and the place was empty. The ambiance was nice as it is a cafe (shared space). The food was nothing special. We order the omakase w/2 appetizers $110. One app was octopus with wasabi sauce which was slimy. The 2nd appetizer was fried mini shrimp which just ok. As for the omakase, the very nice server didn’t explain clearly what was being served. She was confused herself! We also had the assorted sushi $38, again, nothing special. Salmon teriyaki was good. The rolls were ok as well. It was quite an expensive meal that IMO was not worth it. CASH ONLY too!!!

Don't you think you should explain what fish that you're serving when a customer orders "omakase"? Don't do the service half way. I supported the restaurant as much as I could prior to the Righteous Eats blow up, but don't water down the quality just because you can't handle the volume from social media's affects. I was hoping it would just be a one time thing, but this kept happening over and over again. I won't be returning.

I am truly astonished. I feel absolutely hoodwinked. This may be the worst sushi I’ve ever had.
I came in with high expectations- sushi and omakase seatings are my favorite activity. To be concrete, I get omakase (long form, express, etc) at least once a month.
When I saw takesushi was closing and the fact that righteous eats gave it its shine, I wanted to make sure we got a chance to go.
This was a mistake. The omakase was of absolutely poor quality. Most pieces were extremely tough, had off-putting texture, and some were inedible. The rice was also off. It was mushy and falling apart. Additionally, service staff seemed a bit flustered. The waitress forgot half of our order for beverages and omakase. We regret reminding her to add another order.
For 110 per person for their baseline omakase, and a total bill of over 300 dollars- I can’t stress how disappointing this was.
I’d like to say this is a fluke but based on the trends on Yelp regarding the fish quality- I cannot in good conscious recommend it.

2022.07 revisit I still love it great value and delicious
2019.03 went few more times no disappoint at all
2018.05 OMG really yummy...even lunch special katsu Don excellent. Tsukiji fish...depends on your luck.
2018.02 not a busy day... So not much special fish. Believe Fri Sat is better. I still tried the omakase sushi and sashimi...better than lot of place. But not going to full your stomach.... Salmon skin handroll is really good.. The seaweed won't get "moist" still crispy... Will go again...

The food was great there’s no denying that. However, the service wasn’t i couldn’t help but notice how the table next to ours was treated so much better. we weren’t even offered water while we were there, meanwhile all the other tables got refills and top notch service. We spent a good amount of money and ordered a decent amount of food, receiving better service would’ve been nice. That was the only disappointing part of this experience.

I've eaten really, really good sushi and sashimi. This place comes close but for that price and the service, I'll give it a 5. Very lovely people who seem to enjoy what they're doing. The food is really fresh. So instead of spending twice the amount of money somewhere midtown, you can go here for nearly close quality. Street parking is not that hard. A lot of good restaurants in the neighborhood too if you wanna check them out.

The sushi here is really nice and fresh, you can definitely taste (and see) how great the seafood is! That said, the prices are relatively high for dinner dine-in, though of course the quality is better. Hoping to visit one last time before they leave forever. Goodbye, Takesushi!

I feel bad leaving this review but wow this place was a rip off. $150 for omakase?! And for it to be as bad as it was. With drinks, tax, and tip it came out to over $200 per person for my group. It was quite honestly the worst omakase I've had, it tasted like the fish you would get at your local supermarket. For how much we paid I have gone to high end places that are FAR superior. This was worth $40 per person at best. It really hurt my soul that it was so expensive and so subpar. It may be the hype of their viral video and the increase in customers has affected their quality. It did not taste fresh at all, very little flavor, one even tasted like it had gone slightly bad. This place has really good reviews so I'm shocked and again feel really bad but I don't want people to be out of their hard earned money for this.

Avoid this place. I was lured by the endearing video on Righteous Eats. Got the “omakase”. They just give you a sashimi platter all at once, and the selection is what you’d expect from a solid cheap sushi place in Manhattan—probably a $30 would be fair. Did not love the fish. The scallop was outright inedible. The place smelled like a backed up toilet (I’m sure they were having sewer issues). Spent $370 for two people and felt completely sad and disappointed after the meal. Not worth the hype and whoever is promoting this place as a hot eatery is shameless.

Amazing sushi restaurant with a long history and food to die for! Great service!

We did the counter omakase for $150 pp. cash only. The quality of the fish was very fresh and the assortment of nigiri was mixed well. The 4 appetizers were also seasoned well and proportionate. The chefs were very busy preparing for the tables and the counter that seated 8. My rating is mediocre only because I specifically asked for counter seating assuming that I would be served piece by piece as I usually do at other restaurants that offer counter seating. Unfortunately even at the counter you’re served 2 appetizers at a time and the nigiri comes on a plate 6-7 at a time. I could have just sat at a table for that.

Now that I know he's staying open, I figured I'd drop the review. I came on a Thursday, hoping to get some of the fresh fish I assumed he prepared the day before. I got the opposite experience. Everything felt and tasted like it was old. I got to try a lot of different items on top of getting a sushi course for two. Every piece was mediocre at best. With $240 for 2 people, we definitely covered most of the staples. Even the premium pieces felt like they were sitting out too long. A small decline in quality was expected because of his sudden increase in volume, but this was a pretty bad meal overall. I wish I could've experienced what the 5* reviewers did, but the food quality was far below my standards. A repeat visit could be in the future if I'm in the area, just to see if my experience was a fluke.

One of the best sushi in nyc! We ordered a sushi set B and a Chirashi bowl. What surprised me is that their Chirashi bowl comes destructively. Meaning you can place your own fish, and it works perfect for me since I’m allergic to shellfish. So I get to place whichever place the type of fish I’d prefer in my Chirashi bowl.
They serve 70-80% of sashimi straight from Japan. So the quality is there.
The location of the shop is a few blocks away from 7. I’d recommend take a trip to visit them.

My bf and I came here on a Saturday night, no reservation, 1hr wait (didn’t mind, just letting other walk ins know). We ordered the Sushi for 2 deluxe($115). Everything tasted fresh except for the tuna. It tasted fishy. The uni was incredible! For the price and reputation of the restaurant I did expect the sushi to be bigger and “have something more” than just rice and a tsp of fish. Otherwise, sashimi was fine and service was good.

The atmosphere was great, and the service pretty good. Especially considering how busy they have become due to blowing up on social media. Unfortunately, what we had ordered was lacking and a bit unforgettable. Perhaps everything has been thrown off due to the overwhelming crowds, but the quality did not live up to the hype.
With that said, it's nice to hear they are not closing down permanently, and I hope all the kinks are worked out by the time they reopen. If you do decide to visit, I'd recommend getting there at least 30 minutes prior to them opening.

I came here with my parents and my girlfriend during Labor Day weekend. We arrived at 12pm and saw that there was a line waiting at the door (they open at 12). I'm glad that @Righteous Eats from TikTok gave this spot positive exposure.
We went with the omakase with four apps. Most noticeable ones were definitely the fugu skin, uni, and the rest of the nigiri. It is definitely a tier above other Japanese spots I go to and their ingredients are one of the freshest I've ever had.
Some info on the spot: the owner is closing the location because the landlord refused to reimburse the cost when the restaurant owner paid for the repairs after a robbery. I'm glad I was able to support this business before they close at the end of September.

I couldn’t have been more disappointed. I really wanted to support their business but we did not expect to wait 1 hour for our food, the fish was not fresh and the yellow tail was fishy, and there was a lot of chaos/mixup with the waiters and overall service that affected several tables, not just ours. I did not even finish my plate because the yellow tail was fishy and I’m afraid to get poisoning. Too bad this place is so hyped up on social media. I’ve learned my lesson!

This highly understated sushi destination has been around since 1974. It is a legendary secret among sushi lovers.
Last week, we had a team meeting and were pleasantly surprised by their top-notch Chirashi, gyoza, fried oysters, and sushi for lunch. My first experience here was after returning from a job in Japan. It was recommended by someone in Japan who had family in Queens.
Omakase here has always been priced at about half the cost of Omakase in Manhattan. The quality is always just as good as Manhattan - without the ridiculous cost. All of the fish used for the menu comes straight from Japan every week. Kawada, the owner flies out himself and returns later in the day after visiting his favorite mongers and supKawakami,
Sublime offerings at awesome prices. Highly recommended for true sushi and Japanese food lovers.

Delicious and lively lunch spot. Despite a rainy Friday, the place fills up quickly within first half an hour of open. Great value lunch deal where the meal comes with complimentary soup and salad along with free hot tea or water. We ordered sushi set and katsudon where the dish comes in full size unlike other restaurant where lunch portion is smaller. Food also comes out quick where we were able to be in and out within less than an hour. Highly recommend fried oysters - one of the best I’ve had at a Japanese restaurant in NYC area.
Note that this restaurant is cash only. Wish this place would stay around though I heard that they will close soon.

We came during lunch, smaller menu options compared to dinner.
They were really busy and probably short staffed. But service was still great.
I got the Kaisendon & my wife got the Chirashi.
The scallops in that dish were amazing!
My wife loved her dish. She said the tamago in the dish was the best she's ever had.
Someone from the kitchen came out and apologized ahead of time that it may take a bit, he was helping serve tea, water, salad and soup, even though he worked in the kitchen.
The owner came to talk to us for a bit too, said he was closing and his other chef had already left then suddenly a lot of people started showing up.

This place obviously blew up from the righteous eats video. We went this past Sunday and patiently waited hoping for really good sushi. Everything tasted fishy and I’m not sure what all the excitement is about. I was expecting really good rice, wasabi, ginger, fish and all was just not good at all. Not sure why this place got such good reviews. Very disappointed. The fish from Japan wasn’t there that day but still what we were served was not what I was expecting at all.

Visited after seeing the review on righteous eats. Food was very average and unfortunately I’ve had better for the price even in Manhattan. The sushi omakase came out 6 pieces of sushi at a time, wouldn’t recommend given all the amazing food in Sunnyside

Sushi Sets are fresh and superb! Sad that they are closing in October!

Very expensive for what felt like a ordinary home meal (200$+ for three people). Would just go to Sugarfish for a much cheaper and better quality meal at a nice restaurant vibe.

One of my biggest regrets was not coming here sooner—truly a hidden gem. It was pretty quiet when we came, so we were seated and attended to promptly. Service was fast, friendly and professional. They have a wide selection of sake, and the quality of the fish here is so good that it forces you to slow down and really savor every bite. Toro, fluke, salmon, it was all amazing. As for the price, you will pay a lot more anywhere else for what you’ll get here. Gochisousama deshita

It's a hidden gem 💎 in queens. I really enjoyed their food. They have lunch set. I highly recommend Set A. It was very delicious 😋

Great sushi. Probably the best in Queens. It's the only authentic Japanese sushi for miles around. Fish is fresh and delicious. And prices are reasonable for the quality

Traditional hometown Japanese food.

I’ve been here many times to dine in but have wanted to try some of their takeout only specials for a while. I got the Bara Chirashi and it was fresh and tasty.
Also for the price($25), the quality and variety of fish was great.
They also had some cheaper specials that looked good too (specifically the katsu bowl for $9)

Anyway there are absolutely tasty and freash foods I loved. I have Toro, amberjack, snapper, salmon, bonito and scallop everything was awesome I've found !!

I am not a sushi lover but the food was good. However, right after paying, my friends got stopped because they only left a 2 dollar tip. I don't remember that tipping was mandatory and I'm supposed to pay their wages. The prices, which are not exactly cheap, should cover their expenses. That totally ruined the experience

This is a true hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant. The place is no-frills but everything on the menu is truly authentic and seasonal. Fish is fresh, sourced by the chef himself every morning at the fish market. Everything in the lunch B I had today, from super fresh and tasty saba (mackerel) and maguro (tuna) sashimi, fugu (blowfish) tempura, grilled saikyo-zuke ebodai (butterfish), to the hijiki side was super delicious. And the price of $18 was unbelievable. This place outshines any pretentious omakase place in Manhattan. A must go.

I came here for me and my husband’s anniversary and it did not disappoint.
The staff was extremely friendly and attentive with the atmosphere being laid back.
We ordered an appetizer to share, two entrees to share, and orders of separate sushi / sashimi to enjoy.
First the miso soup and salad were extremely fresh and flavorful. It really puts most other places to shame.
Then the gyoza came out and was delicious. It was soft all and fresh and crispy at the bottom. The filling was delicious. The sauce that came with the gyoza was also very fresh and had a tinge of thickness to it.
The two entrees we shared, chicken teriyaki and shrimp tempura entree were great! The chicken was juicy and fresh with the teriyaki sauce being clean and flavorful.
The shrimp tempura was a star, the shrimp was super fresh with the batter being fresh, light and crunchy. The tentsuyu dipping sauce was light and flavorful, perfectly accompanying the fried batter.
Lastly the sushi. A reasonably price for top quality sushi. It was soft and soooo fresh and delicious. The tuna melts in your mouth, especially the blue fin tuna. Lastly the yellow tail I got was so buttery and melts in your mouth.
I can’t believe we only came here now. I can’t wait to come here and enjoy it again!

I’ve lived in Sunnyside all my life and never had food from here till tonight. Big mistake! The food here was amazing. The sashimi was delicious. It melted in my mouth. The tempura shrimp didn’t feel heavy like in other places. The breading was light and airy almost. The chicken teriyaki was sooo tender and juicy! And the miso soup tasted so flavorful. I gladly recommend this place to anyone who’s heard of it. Yes it’s cash only and their hours are limited so be sure to check beforehand. Please take a look!

Some of the best sushi I’ve had in NYC.
It does not matter where you live in the 5 Burroughs it’s worth taking the time to come to this restaurant! Order the Omakase as a celebration, I tried to taka sushi sushi.
The owner brings in only finest and freshest fish you can get. This is not inexpensive but it is much more affordable then what you would get in Manhattan if you can even find this good quality.
Please note while the food is perfect this restaurant is owned and operated by the owner/sushi chef and his wife who works the front door.
The service is quirky and can be on the slow side as there is mostly the owner at the sushi counter.
The hot menu from the kitchen is just good as the sushi. You might as well be in Japan.
Best miso soup also. I loved the black cod and yellow tail Kama. I can’t recommend it enough.

Everything we ate was extraordinary! Really delicious, super fresh!

The sushi for 2 course was terrible.
Wasabi was not spicy at all and sushi was poorly made. The soy sauce was also excessively salty.
Salad and miso soup were good though.

One of the best Japanese places in Queens, hands down. The kitchen is just as good as the sushi so make sure to try out the black cod and various tempura dishes.

They have the best soba ever! I usually don’t like to eat soba at restaurants because their broth is usually too sweet. Even some of the best renowned soba restaurants in New York are not really to my liking. But Takesushi soba broth is very clean and not sweet. And they serve cha soba(green tea soba).

By far the best sushi place in the area, but they really need to renovate their space to be more appealing for dates.
