Masaaki is the premium Japanese restaurant located in the heart of Bayside, Queens, serving your go-to Sushi Rolls, Japanese dishes, as well as 15 and 19-course Omakase by reservation.
Let’s start with the atmosphere. The place is spacious, nicely designed, and has a somewhat fancy vibe.
We ordered a variety of sushi, sashimi, and appetizers. The tempura was excellent, but the sushi and sashimi were just average in quality. For the price, we expected better. The selection was nearly identical to what we typically get from another nearby sushi spot at a much lower cost. For us, it simply wasn’t worth the premium price, so we’ll be sticking to our regular spot in the future.
On a positive note, the service was good.

The omakase experience was amazing! This was my 2nd time here within one month (omakase only), and it will not be my last! My pictures are a combo of both experiences. I may have missed some courses because everything was delicious lol. The Chefs are knowledgeable and cooked with love. They take the time out to answer any questions you may have. The waiters are attentive and accommodating. The ingredients are fresh and everything just melts in your mouth.

This hidden gem along 41st Avenue in Bayside feels like a Manhattan escape without the SoHo crowds. The spacious seating, stylish, trendy decor, and extensive menu (beyond the typical Japanese fare) make it a standout. They even offer omakase and happy hour specials on drinks and appetizers. The beautifully plated dishes and impeccable service make it a perfect date spot. Prices were surprisingly reasonable, and we'll definitely be returning for more. They even offer valet parking on weekends!

When I enter a sushi restaurant, I know it is authentic Japanese because the sushi chefs will greet every guest who enters aloud in Japanese. That won't happen at Masaaki, because the chefs & staff are Chinese. FYI for those who are ignorant of Japanese custom. Keeping an open mind, I ordered tempura and sushi & sashimi lunch. The presentation and quality of raw fish were very good. Tempura was deep fried to perfection. No shortcuts with size of fish. Portion was very generous, especially for lunch. Interior is very clean & contemporary Japanese decor. Premium feel & quality come with premium price. However, as I already mentioned, the portion is generous. Service was adequate. Why not 5 stars? There was no bar seating in front of sushi chefs. I love to sit at a sushi bar to see the artistry & skill of a top sushi chef in real time. Oftentimes, some great conversations happen with them. The other reason is the fact I mentioned earlier. When I dine at a Szechuan house, I expect Chinese chefs & staff. I wouldn't want Koreans running the place. Likewise, a Japanese omakase should be run by Japanese people. To be very clear, this is a topic of race, culture, tradition & authenticity and not to be misunderstood as a racist comment. True foodies will understand. In any case, I recommend Masaaki, which is located in a quaint, cozy side street from the main stretch of the heart of Bayside restaurant district. Lovely interior. Surprised at how large it was. Many private areas and smaller rooms for private affairs. Lobster avacado dish was very good. Grilled eel over fried rice was delicious. The sashimi platter was very fresh and tasty. Miso cod, vegetable tempura, and tofu teriyaki were all good. My glass of Chardonnay was very good. Great service. I recommend this restaurant!

Amazing experience at Masaaki! Our friends recommended this place before! Definitely will come back! You can park the car at the parking lot ($2 for one hour) or street parking. They also have omakase, cheaper than Manhattan. Please try the Rock shrimp tempura! Also try roasted Eel rice, soooooo good!

An absolute gem! l'm a sushi person, and this is the first time l've had that, 'perfect,' meal. Upon walking in, the staff was friendly and courteous. During the meal they were highly attentive without being obtrusive. We were there for lunch and got the basics. Sushi/sashimi lunch w miso soup, and a bento box w miso soup. The soup was an outstanding version of miso, the sushi was, 'close your eyes momentarily,' good and the bento box was great. Presentation was great and the atmosphere belied the fact that the lunch was also a great value. Whenever visiting Bayside, it will be my go to place!

Have been looking for a Japanese place that comes close to Yasuda (midtown Manhattan) since i moved to Whitestone in 2015. Dealt with so many disappointments until now. This place has unrivaled sushi & sashimi: trio sashimi lunch special: tuna, yellow tail & salmon makes tears stroll down your cheeks (borrowed that last phrase from the Times review of Yasuda, six months after they opened). & their California roll is just delectable. Price for quality: the Yasuda of Queens.

Don’t be deceived by paid reviews on Google maps
I’ve been to so many sushi spots in NYC from local to Michelin restaurants, this was the worst sushi place so far
Sushi isn’t made by Sushi chef- You can tell that they know nothing about how to make sushi from how they made the rice.
Rice was not fully cooked - hard, cold and dry - it tasted like plastic lol
I didn’t even expect it to be in shape but
They didn’t even try to season the rice properly 😂
Mid age female server was very impatient (not rude but simply not doing a good job)
Only reason I gave 2 stars is because I appreciated the space and its atmosphere

Our Omakase chef David was fantastic! He was such a delight, he shared information about each piece and was thoughtful in how he prepared each piece for us. He always refilled our ginger without us having to ask. I would go back just to have our Omakase with chef David again! He was excellent and I would highly recommend him.
The reason for not giving 5 stars is … The greeters at the entrance were not welcoming - no smile, not even a look in our direction to check on our reservation. When you are getting ready to spend A LOT on a meal, you expect the greeters and other service folks to be happy and inviting. The table setting service was not consistent, meaning when we were seated there were no place settings, just a bare wooden counter. It was not until after our first piece of nigiri was ready that a server noticed and rushed to get us some plates.

Fish quality was okay. Like most Chinese owned Japanese style (won't even call it Japanese restaurant), the fish is fresh. However, the sushi rice is too vinegary and hard! It overpowers the taste of the fish. The washabi taste like some powdery green stuff.
One last thing. I ordered a la carte of Hokkaido uni. One bite costs $18.00. Meanwhile the sashimi entree is only $19.00.wouldnit make sense to let the customer know ahead of time what the price is? I know Hokkaido uni is on the pricey side, but still I would appreciate if they tell me to let me know the price beforehand. MP means you can tag anything you like. This is unacceptable.

My family and I have been regular customers at Restaurant , and we have always enjoyed the food and ambiance. However, our recent experience has left us extremely dissatisfied.
During our visit, we encountered an issue with the hostess, who displayed a rude and unwelcoming attitude towards us. As loyal patrons, we were taken aback by the lack of hospitality and respect shown to us. This behavior is unacceptable and has tarnished our perception of your establishment. Really sucks because this was a go to sushi place for my family and I.

One of my friends recommended this place to me so I decided to have dinner with my family of 6 . We got there 8:56 pm as soon as we walked in the MANAGER shouted our kitchen closes at 9:30 the restaurant closes at 10 so I replied what does that mean he looked at me and said 10 o’clock you have to get out of the restaurant regardless if you have finished your dinner or not That is unacceptable and not a managerial position

I went here for Summer 2024 Restaurant Week. I booked reservations for a Wednesday at 12 pm. There is municipal parking on the same block. We ordered Kani Salad, Goyza and two Sushi and Sashimi lunch special. They were very accommodating since I asked for no dressing or mayo. They replaced my roll since it was suppose to be a spicy salmon roll (it has mayo). Fish was very fresh. The Kani Salad was most a cucumber salad but the panko made better. The Goyza was slightly salty for my taste but probably not for any one else. Service excellent. My water glass was never less than half full. Great for special occasions.

We had a 5pm Omakase reservation on a Sunday. We were celebrating 2 birthdays and the restaurant kindly acknowledged the event; everyone enjoyed the extra special dessert. The premium omakase dining experience was superb. Our curator was mindful of one person’s non preference for a particular item and pivoted to provide extra serving of that to another of our party which thoroughly enjoyed EVERY SINGLE COURSE. Each course was presented beautifully and so fresh and tasty. It was the right amount of interaction to make it informative yet non intrusive on our group’s dinner conversation. Keep in mind the event is about 1.5 hour long so courses are prepared to a timed schedule to accommodate other omakase diners. I’m sure you can move to the bar area if one chooses to linger longer. Cocktails, wine and sake selections were excellent as well. I look forward to coming back.

Typical Chinese style/ Japanese restaurant atmosphere with little options, no uni for such high end restaurant seems odd and also staff was hard to call upon. My blue fin toro look weak and marble as toro but is just regular tuna. I saw the omakase in the back room after I finish. I choose dining quietly because I didn’t want the chef keep talking and saw some kids in that room also so no no. The price is too expensive also for such place.

Went a couple of times, they were alright. Decor is very good. However it all went down hill last weekend. Food is not high quality Japanese food. So called Rock Shrimps Tempura, they tasted more like popcorn shrimps from frozen aisle. Tempura should have been light batter and fluffy. Rice inside sushi was not properly prepared as well. Masaaki Sushi serves 3 Omakase options and we had their premium set for our anniversary. Their decor is brilliant with romantic ambiance.
There were 6 courses ahead of sushi: Bluefin Tuna, Toro Tartar Toast, Crab with Gralic Butter, King Mushroom Salad , Kumamoto Oyster and Chawan-Mushi. It was an amazing start, my favorite was the oyster with sweet & fresh flavor and my husband loved the toast which combined all luxury ingredients like toro, caviar & gold.
10 pieces of sushi, Wagyu Chirashi Sushi and Toro Handroll came after appetizers. They ran out of Uni that day which was a little sad but the chef’s fish selection was still great with proper seasoning.
There is a lot of spots for omakase with average price of $100 recently in NYC but the quality is doubtful. Masaaki is definitely a great spot not only with reasonable price but also outstanding quality & freshness.

You’d be surprised how big and beautiful Masaaski in Bayside is from the outside. Open the doors and you will reveal a surprisingly state of the art design with friendly welcoming staffs. Don’t grab a seat yet. Take a tour of the venue so you can properly enjoy your experience here. There are plenty of tables with a sushi bar and an omakase table in the rear. They have three different kinds of omakase and two different sake pairing menus from $78 to $138 and $35 to $55 respectively. We sat down at the omakase table and chose the 19-course for $138 with the $55 sake pairing. Everything is fresh and tasty. We were so full we had to reject the handroll at the end. Finished the night off with crème brûlée to satisfy our sweet tooth. Stop by Masaaki in Bayside Queens without driving so far to the city for a wonderful treat.

In addition, they have valet that I believe is comped, and Thursday through Saturday nights they have beer, wine, and sake, buy one get one free. That was a nice treat!

Embarking on a delightful journey of flavors and textures, I had the pleasure of indulging in an Omakase sushi feast at Masaaki, graciously invited by my niece and nephew. As a former professional sushi chef, exploring new sushi establishment is always a thrilling experience for me.
Freshness is the cornerstone of a memorable sushi experience, and Masaaki did not disappoint. I believe all sushi lovers are well aware of the importance and necessity of consuming sushi that is fresh and hygienic, as failure to do so may lead to illness or the risk of contracting viruses from the consumption of raw seafood. With a keen eye for the essential criteria-- firmness, brightness and translucent-- the sushi here was a welcome reassurance.
For the uninitiated, 'Omakase' translate to "I'll leave it up to you" in Japanese, symbolizing the diner's trust in the chef culinary expertise. Opting for the chef's bar table allowed me to witness the meticulous preparation of each dish, a spectacle that enhanced the immediate enjoyment of the fresh sushi. A palate cleanser in the form of sliced ginger accompanied every serving, preparing the taste buds for the next delightful bite.
While the service at Masaaki was attentive, the atmospheric ambiance, though welcoming, leaned towards the darker side for my preference. The lantern adorned walls exuded a nostalgic touch reminiscent of French art deco with a Japanese twist from the early 1900s. However, the noise level was a tad high, making it challenging to catch every detail the chef shared about the ingredients.
Masaaki offers 15 or 19 courses based on your selected price range. It's important to note that each course comprises a single piece of sushi or a small plate, dispelling any notion of overwhelming portions.
Now, let's delve into the culinary journey. The diced tuna tartar with plain soy sauce left me wanting; a special sauce or dressing would have elevated the dish beyond its basic elements. The combination of an oyster shell atop fresh scallop seemed ill-conceived, as the flavors clashed rather than complemented. Conversely, the toro with avocado on plain white toast, topped with caviar, showcased a brilliant fusion of flavors, though a toasted bread element would have added a desirable texture.
The Chawanmushi with uni, salmon roe, and edamame, a traditional Japanese dish, fell short due to the somewhat bland egg tart dominating the cup. The undisputed star was the toro sushi, adorned with caviar -- a truly decadent and satisfying experience.
The torch-fired steak with truffle and caviar was intriguing, though the marriage of caviar with steak felt peculiar. A simple flan dessert with sweet red bean paste and whipped cream concluded the meal on a modest note.
The importance of the sushi rice is equivalent to that of the fish. Traditionally, the rice should be poured over and stirred with a mixture of marinated seaweed and Bonito vinegar to enhance the flavor. The rice is ideally served warm at room temperature to complement the cold fish, creating a Yin and Yang balance that promotes metabolic health and harmony. This underscores the significance of equilibrium and the interconnectedness of all things, emphasizing the balance between positive and negative elements. Notably, the sushi rice at Masaaki carried a subtle flavor but lacked the robustness i anticipated.
While the overall experience was pleasant, I couldn't identify a show-stopping dish that elicited a "wow" factor, especially considering the price point. A more leisurely pace would have allowed me to savor each bite thoroughly. Despite these minor quibbles, Masaaki remains an enjoyable venue to share with family and friends.

Last time I was here I gave it a five star review because everything was on point. I'm not sure what happened tonight but it definitely was not that. We went to celebrate my daughter's birthday. My husband ordered a cooked entree and my children and I ordered sushi. As happened one time before right when they had opened, my husband got his food, my children got their rollls and my sashimi wasn't brought out until after they had almost finished. Not only that but we ordered an appetizer, fried calamari which came out cold and chewy. I ordered an assortment of sashimi which last time had been so fresh but this time just wasn't the same. I had ordered sweet shrimp which I had had in other places and here it was a bigger shrimp not a little shrimp and it was extremely fishy. They said it took so long because they cooked the fish head which I'm not even sure was even edible. I would have asked but I could not find the server at that time. They did do a nice job with my daughter's birthday and the desserts were great but I do not know if I would return knowing that there is a wide variety of other places to choose from.

We tried the omakase menu in this restaurant, and I was impressed. Every piece of fish was fresh and delicious. The chef and the staff were friendly. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food we got. This will be my new go-to restaurant for omakase. Recommended.

This was my second time dining and my first omakase here. We chose the $88 set and it was perfect. Chef Michael was an absolute delight and each course was thoughtfully designed and seasoned to perfection. Another plus is the freshly chopped ginger! A huge fan of that! I’m so happy that I don’t have to trek out to the city when the omakase cravings come calling.

Wonderful ambiance. Great attentive staff. Fresh sushi and sashimi. Great place to go for lunch or dinner. Quality of the fish is superb. Will be returning and recommending.

Very nice interior. High ceilings, all new finishes.
Definitely a great deal for lunch. The fish is higher quality than a typical sushi restaurant. 3 rolls for $18 or 9 pieces for $20 (tuna, salmon, or yellowtail). Lunch comes with a soup and small salad. We also enjoyed the gyoza. Very thin wrapper and crunchy. My wife enjoyed her sangria. They have a full bar and big selection.
They also have an omakase. Obviously the price point is much higher. I may lean towards going for one in the city but I think this would be pretty good.

This place serves great sushi, has phenomenal atmosphere and service. The atmosphere provides such a calm and sort of luxurious dining experience. This place deserves more recognition and reviews.

The service and atmosphere here were great but the real star is the sushi. The fish tasted very fresh and all the ingredients that accompanied the seafood were perfectly balanced.

Was a couple bites into my rock tempura I had ordered and found this fly on the lettuce. Then walked all over my shrimp lol. Last time I will be ordering from here I was also excited about this place because of how good their sashimi is, but how my food was packed with a fly in it? Weird.

a lovely spot with great sushi and dishes. we did feel incredibly rushed by the wait staff which was unnecessary as we had arrived at a time guaranteeing no turnover for our table. overall the food was quite good but the service was a little detrimental to our dining experience

A surprisingly high-quality sushi spot in Bayside! Sashimi is incredibly fresh and the rolls are great (the special rolls are worth the extra price, as they have some unique combinations). The decor and ambiance make it ideal for a date or quiet meal, and service is attentive. Definitely an excellent Japanese spot worth visiting!

Masaaski is an Asian fusion with omakase options. I come here for lunch when I'm in the neighborhood and want some sushi.
I usually get the sushi sashimi lunch.
The place is nice, but can get busy and loud. A lot of Chinese go there. If you sit in that back, it gets pretty loud and may get hard to hear the person in front of you.
Sashimi sushi Lunch special comes with a miso soup and salad with ginger dressing.
Sushi is very good quality and melts in your mouth. It's not the best, but pretty good. Definitely a bit above yourl average local sushi place. I would've liked more variety in my lunch since I'm spending a over $20 for one lunch.
Sashimi is with tuna, salmon and maybe yellowtail. Sushi is the same fish and the roll is a tuna.

I eat here regularly and the food and service never disappoint. All the food is amazingly well made and delicious and the servers are very attentive and helpful. The restaurant is also beautifully designed with hand painted murals that complement the dining experience very well. I would recommend the spring rolls, fire island roll, sweet heart roll, and the lunch box. Overall, Masaaki is a great restaurant you should try at least once.

Came here for dinner with friends family, this place is modern and the service is pretty good.
Ordered sashimi deluxe, Chilean sea bass with truffle sauces, tofu tempura dinner, rock shrimps appetizers and teriyaki chicken with rice and few rolls! All the seafood are fresh and decent portions! Will visit again next time.

We decided to dine at Masaaki for my husband’s birthday on Sunday, July 2nd. We wanted to try their Omakase since we’ve passed by it multiple times on Bell Blvd and finally wanted to try it out :-)
5/5 stars for everything! The place has a beautiful aesthetic, very clean, modern and spacious. The food was impeccably made and delicious. Omakase is truly an art form and the chefs did a phenomenal job preparing and presenting everything. They deserve all the praise!
My husband’s favorite stand-outs from the 19-course Omakase were the Miso Cod and Abalone, as well as the Wagyu!
We definitely plan to come back! Thanks again for the amazing experience! ^_^

This place was amazing. Aside from just how massive this place is, the Omakase experience was immaculate. For $80ish bucks for 15 courses, that was one of the best omakase values I’ve ever had in the city. There were quite a few unique pieces that I have never seen before anywhere else as well.

Honestly, this place never misses. The service is always excellent and the atmosphere is amazing. We cant ever go their without getting the crispy tuna appetizer. I'd say the sushi and hibachi is some of the best in Bayside, but you're going to have trouble finding better in Auburndale/Great Neck too. The solid liquor selection/cocktails don't hurt either.
