Small, low-key Japanese pick offering high-quality omakase meals & a BYO policy.
We visited Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar mainly because of their stellar reviews, and I truly wish I could add another five stars here because their food absolutely deserves it. Lazarus, our Hispanic sushi chef, has completely embraced his role and delivered an incredible dining experience. He was even somewhat of a "Soup Nazi" — berating my wife for putting a slice of ginger on one of the dishes. I respect their traditionalism and dedication to detail, and the results were undeniably scrumptious.
However, I am deducting stars for a few reasons:
1. The Chairs: The seating is downright uncomfortable—cheap, swiveling bar stools with no back support. For the kind of dining experience they’re aiming to offer, this simply doesn’t cut it.
2. Ambiance and Price: The restaurant feels about 20-30% too expensive for the overall experience. While the sushi itself is unforgettable, the setting doesn’t match the price point. Investing in better chairs and upgrading the decor could elevate the atmosphere to match the quality of the food.
I’m rooting for this place and genuinely hope they make some changes because their sushi is exceptional. With a few adjustments, they have the potential to create a dining experience as memorable as their dishes.

Amazing! Very rare nowadays that I like every single piece I eat during an omakase meal. I couldn’t find fault whatsoever. They do have a lot of sea bream, amber jacks, flukes but the execution is on point which is hard to find in a city filled with sushi places that are not traditional. I strongly recommend.

Easy to pass by this unobtrusive gem. Omakase was an incredible series of sushi. Nice rice:fish ratio. The rice was not saturated with vinegar. The fish were delicately sliced and seasoned, and served with a short description by the chef. The restaurant inside is nothing fancy. The focus is on the sushi. Limited seating so reserve in advance.

Omakase style sushi bar which is absolutely delicious. Reservations are a must; each round has space for about eight people. Two chefs prepare one piece after another to be enjoyed. Best ginger 🫚 I’ve ever had at a sushi place! You can get green tea but they serve no alcohol or drinks! So bring your own bottle - they supply a silver ice cooler :) we paid around 280$ for a great evening. We didn’t say it was my birthday dinner but the women next to me got this amazing sushi cupcake creation with a little candle (and her bday was 3 days prior - so a little jealous ;) ) - tell them!

This BYOB counter-service authentic Japanese omakase restaurant was everything we hoped for. Our 10 course dinner featured fresh, perfectly seasoned pieces of sushi, served with ample helpings of marinated ginger. We opted for two additional pieces at the end which further reinforced our opinion - this place is the real deal and every bite they serve is truly special. Check out the photos of our meal (only one not taken was the hand roll, last of the 10 courses). Already looking forward to coming back!

The waiter service at this place was one of the worst we've ever experienced. We had made a reservation for a 7:30pm omakase dinner for 5 people and we were 15 min early. When entering the restaurant, a rude host came running towards us shouting they were not ready for us. As it was freezing outside, we asked if we could wait inside (as the place was basically empty) but she said we couldn't. That set the stage for an extremely unpleasant experience throughout the night, far removed from Chef Toshio's vision of creating a welcoming and enjoyable environment for guests. This defineltly wasn't the high-quality authentic sushi experience focusing on traditional Japanese flavors and techniques, as they claim. There was not a single Japanese sushi chef in the restaurant. And while the sushi quality was acceptable, the omakase service felt rushed. It looked like they were trying to get us out in under 60 minutes. This was definitely not the Edomae-style omakase we were expecting and not a memorable dining experience at all.
We have been to many omakese places in NYC, Tokyo, Kyoto, Fukuoka and many more around the world and this must be one of the worst experiences ever. I don't know why this host offered a 10% discount. She must have realized our experience wasn't a very happy one. Very disappointing.

I visited many years ago and recall this was the best sushi oamakase place I've tried in NYC at that point. Can't tell if it's still my fav choice cause didn't have a chance to visit for a long time.
I remember that price level of omakase here when I visited felt very reasonable and sushi quality was amazing, hence making it feel very price efficient. I pay much more attention to rice than fish/seafood for sushi and they did perfect job. But of course, that does not mean that their fish and seafoos were mediocre. Place itself could give you some old ambience as it seems little aged and small. But chefs serve you sushi piece by piece while checking your pace and waitress also serves you tea and miso soup at perfect timing, so they overall pleasantly make you feel "served".

Not a bad meal but nothing particularly memorable. There are a number of other omakases I would recommend over this one.

Fish, sushi , rice were amazing! Service was the ok, interaction with sushi chief was inaudible/ really hard to understand and no explanation about sushi/ fish cut. The lady (owner/manager) was a good host give us some basic explanation about where the fish was coming. We were 3 for dinner, duration was 1h and cost us 465$ with tips. DONT Forget to bring wine/sake/béer for you lunch/dinner BYOB. If you pay cash discount will apply , not sure but I think it will be 10%

Wow, I went in a little blind but was happily surprised by the omakase meal. A little pricey for a short seating time and 14 pieces but over excellent. It's BYOY and I'd recommend grabbing a sake from next door to go with your meal.

Really great sushi - with all the “affordable fast” omakase sushi spots that have popped up in the last few years, I think Tanoshi isn’t really worth the price - still an delicious meal
Just know that it’s about a 60-70 minute meal and very hole in the wall experience

This omakase did not disappoint. Each piece was flavorful and melt in your mouth delicious. We didn’t add any a la carte pieces and left feeling perfectly content. Note that this is a tipping establishment so per person a dinner course will run approximately $165.

We recently visited Tanoshi, renowned for its amazing omakase experience. Indeed, the culinary journey was impressive, showcasing an array of beautifully crafted dishes with exquisite flavors.
However, our appreciation for the meal was overshadowed by an unforeseen personal emergency involving my wife, which required us to leave abruptly.
Regrettably, during this stressful moment, the response from the staff, especially one lady, was far from sympathetic. Their insistence on settling the bill immediately, coupled with a distinctly rude demeanor, added to our discomfort and urgency. I felt like I was forced to pay $300. This is unheard of and something I did not expect as it isn’t mentioned anywhere.
It was disheartening to encounter such a lack of understanding and compassion, particularly in a situation that called for empathy and quick action. While the food was exceptional, the inflexible and unsympathetic customer service significantly tainted our overall experience at Tanoshi. This was the worst we have ever been treated in our lives, it was inhumane

Heard a lot about this place online and was excited to give it a try. I’ve been to a lot of omakases in the city (Shinn West, Sushi On Me, Sushi by N, etc) and this one was casual to the point where I was uncomfortable in atmosphere. Not to say I don’t like a more relaxed environment!
I was in the 7:30 spot and the moment I stepped in, it reeked of stale bleach mingled with humid human sweat.
You’re able to BYOB and the waitress was super nice but the chef was both rude and… blatantly unsanitary. He ignored my questions about where the fish was from and barely acknowledged us. For the unsanitary bit, He had chopped up some tuna meat for a course and upon eating my sushi in one bite, I pulled out a bone the length of a long fingernail. I wiped it out my plate (NOT the plate where he puts the fish) but my own. As soon as he saw the bone, he reached over, plucked it up, laughed, and then wiped it ON THE BOARD WHERE HE WAS PREPARING THE SUSHI. I was shocked.
While the fish is decently fresh and the combos are interesting, the courses are often times paired and drowned by overwhelming sauces, which hinders the palette.
I will not be returning. I recommend Shinn East or West

I have been to Tanoshi several times and am sad to say that my most recent visit (my first time back in several years) will be my last. The sushi itself was fresh, delicious, and interesting, but the service and ambiance leave a lot to be desired. I understand there is a more casual/no frills vibe here and went in expecting that, but when you are paying $120+pp there is just a baseline level of service that I felt was lacking.

I’d say this is one of the best affordable omakase spots in the city. Almost want to gate keep it but I think it’s getting quite popular lately. It is super authentic sushi - very fresh fish and the seasonings added to some of the nigiris are divine - just complements the fish’s flavor and reminds me of home a lot. The itamae san is an old Japanese guy - not very talkative but you can tell he is a shokunin san - dedicated to his craft. Also its byob and theres a liquor store next door.

During a solo trip to NYC I decided to venture from the UWS to the UES for this small and unassuming sushi bar. The style is omakase and it was truly an experience.
You are greeted at the door with your name on a list, then sat at the bar for one of only 3 seatings per night (make a reservation in advance).
I met and mingled with such interesting and unique individuals it was an incredible experience. The staff were so friendly and kind. They got me to try things that were out of my comfort zone sushi wise and I was so glad they did.
The perfect spot for solo travelers or a couple’s date night. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would.

Delicious sushi in a no frills atmosphere. Service was very good. A bit pricey but well worth the experience given the quality. We opted for the chef guided selection coursed one at a time, then added a few more pieces at the end. Some pieces are traditional and others are very creative, but the fish shines here, not overwhelming sauces, as you may see at some other sushi places. This place is BYOB. Would definitely return.

Love this place! Serious, special omikase at a not-crazy price. Lovely kind people working there who will go out of their way to make you happy. Amazing fish, served in an authentic, albeit not schwanky environment. It's all about the fish, as it should be.

We used to come 2-3 times a year but it is clearly a different place with new people. Rushed, rude, rudimentary lacking the rustic relaxed authentic Japanese sushi bar experience it once had. This is now a sling and churn fast food sushi hut that will no doubt, for a while, take newcomers looking for the place that garnered the reviews and respect it once had when it was run by others. Not just disappointing, we were disgusted. Never again - and no need with the plethora of options across NYC. What Tanoshi was is now unfortunately over.

My favorite spot for edomae style sushi in NYC now that the jiro place has (sadly) fallen off. Everything in the omakase was great, topped off with my favorite, the XXX (ikura, quail egg and uni). They have a nice selection of additional nigiri you can supplement with after the omakase (some of the choices are repeats from the omakase menu). Service is excellent - it's all counter service with one chef per 4 diners. I also love that it's BYOB so make sure to bring along a nice sake or wine pairing for your meal. They provide glasses and ice buckets.

This place is disgusting…..every night they throw some sort of nasty dish water or cleaning solution into the small area right outside their front door and not only does it smell bad but it has left a nasty cesspool type area out there….show some respect for the neighborhood as it’s unbelievable that you think this is ok….

Update: we went two more times after the first and the latter two times did not feel satisfactory at all. The fish selections were poor. I guess this place is a hit or miss depending on what they have
We really enjoyed our dinner here! Very small but comfortable place. All the sushi omakase we had were excellent. Everything was super fresh and of good quality.
We were disappointed tho that we didn't get any explanation of anything from the chef tho. I think it most likely depends on which chef you get for the night as my friend who came before said they had excellent service and attention from the chefs. We also put down on the reservation that we were celebrating two birthdays but we didn't even get a happy birthday song from the staff here. Oh well....
BYOB. We brought our own sake and the staff here happily offered us a ice bucket to put it in.
Overall, everything was delicious and so reasonably price. I would definitely want to come back again!

A no frills but delicious omakase experience. I've been here 4 times and this place does not disappoint. I would suggest going for the dinner session over lunch since the lunch experience feels a little more rushed due to the shortened time (sushi will still be exceptional). Definitely make sure to RSVP on their website/Yelp.

Woah! True warmth of traditional Omakase done right. You can taste the LOVE. Love the warm rice with each piece :)
Respectfully, I asked to hold the Wasabi within each piece as I personally think the wasabi spice can be overpowering - interfering with the pure flavor. If they offered hot towels at the beginning, that would be a nice touch.
I cannot wait to return! Thank You!!!

Tanoshi is a disappointment. I’ve been here a few times and the foods always great. Fish is fresh. Some pieces lack a bit of flavor but the freshness makes up for it. What got me is, they charged 10% more for using a card without being told. We received the bill with one price and after paying the total receipt was charged 10% more, circling the original price saying cash discount. This deceptive behavior won’t have me coming back.
Visited 2 years ago
Gosh the old owner was so great. And so was the quality back then. Now it’s just run down and running on empty fumes, coasting on the reputation from years ago. I won’t go back.
Visited 2 years ago
It was a pleasure returning to Tanoshi for the lunch omakase ($55 for seven pieces of sushi, one spicy tuna roll, one hand roll, and the miso soup). I came here for dinner omakase years ago, and I was glad to see that the restaurant remains very humble, despite the popularity it has gained throughout the years.
There are only counter-seatings, so make sure you reserve ahead of time. It is still BYOB, so pick up a bottle before you show up (no corkage fee).
Eating sushi at the counter here feels as close to dining in Japan without getting on a plane. The price was very reasonable, and the quality of the fish was top-notch. Watching the sushi chef making the pieces in front of you and then pointing to the map showing where the fish is from was another highlight of our meal.
If you are still hungry, order the XXX sushi piece. Yes, it is pricey at $12...but it will remain one of your most memorable sushi experiences.

Tucked away in two unassuming storefronts on the Upper East Side, Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar serves up some of the highest quality sushi in New York. The service here is excellent, and the restaurant has the added bonus of being BYOB, so you can bring along whatever drink option you like. Tanoshi Will even allow you and your dining partners to choose from a selection of unique sake glasses if you bring a bottle of sake.
Beyond the intimate atmosphere and great service, Tanoshi is serving some of the highest quality fish available. Each piece of nigiri is simply and beautifully prepared with standouts being the ikura and sweet shrimp and the freshwater eel.
Fish selections will change based on what is available but you can be sure that whatever Tanoshi is serving you will not be disappointed.

This was our 3rd time coming here. The sushi itself was ok, nothing to write home about, not very creative, definitely not as remembered from previous visits. Many reviewers are taking issue with the decor, that the place is shabby, but I am fine with it as it jives with the neighborhood. Price is also fair, as a lot of the omakase places in NYC charge $300+ per person. Now regarding last night's experience. The sushi chef was a disaster, not in the way he made sushi, but the fact that there was no interaction with his customers whatsoever, no eye contact, not even a word of where each fish came from - he would simply point his flashlight at the map behind him for a split second and continue. But he is not to blame, from what I observed every sushi chef was the same - mechanically performing his functions. And then the horrific manager. She was standing next to our seats so I mentioned to her that I thought the sauce on the salmon we were just served was too sweet and overpowered the fish. To which she rudely replied "that's your opinion." Well, obviously...who else's opinion would I be talking about. I have never encountered such rudeness from someone in the hospitality business. It so frustrated and insulted me that I got up and left immediately, my husband stayed to pay the bill. Worthy to mention, this restaurant's response to one of their google reviews was "If you have any specific feedback about your visit we'd really appreciate it as we use all reviews as a way to improve our service and offerings." So I gave my feedback right then and there, just to be insulted on the spot. Done with this place. Horrible service and even more horrible management. I think these guys forgot the principles of the original owner and the hospitality of the Japanese culture.

Mind-blowingly fresh and thick fish in the nigiri which was completely worth the trek up to UES for me. The $55 lunch set with 8 courses was just enough to satiate me. The spot is a cozy, hole in the wall space that can comfortably fit about 10 people I would say. The chefs are on the quieter side though the server was very nice to offer me paper towels after I was caught in the rainstorm.

I don’t typically leave reviews anymore but this place deserves an exception— there’s nowhere else in the city you can get a meal this good for a price this low. Forget the documentary stars with their own $200-a-meal dinners and European-sourced wood finishes. This place feels like New York without sacrificing culinary authenticity. The decor is sparse, comprising of a couple fishing maps and kitschy Sushi posters. What it lacks in aesthetic luxury, though, it makes up for in taste. The timing, sequencing, and presentation of each piece is down to a science. The salmon belly, lightly scorched with a blowtorch, melts in your mouth and delivers layers of texture and an impressive depth of flavor.
Make use of the 2nd avenue subway and get over to Tanoshi— I can’t wait to go back!

Came to Tanoshi for my first omakase experience and was not disappointed. We brought a bottle of white wine for the byob too. Not a walk in so be sure to book.
By far the best ratio of fish to rice on a nigiri I’ve ever had. The fish itself was incredibly tender and flavourful. The nori was perfectly crisp on the rolls. My favorites were the shrimp, scallop, salmon, and uni. We had a total of 13 separate courses. They also had many additional items that cost extra.
Definitely an incredible experience albeit certainly on the pricey side.

I went here with my fiancé for our anniversary dinner and the food was good but the service was a disappointment given the price. The website states 4 people per chef but we had 10 total and felt forgotten the entire meal. We were seated at the end of the bar and couldn’t see the chef or fish. The chefs didn’t say anything about the fish and overall we didn’t think it was worth the price.

Fresh, delicious, and creative food. Reasonably priced Omakase. Chefs save money on decoration for food quality (a relaxed and self-restrained atmosphere, not pretentious like in Tokyo). This is my second visit (I went here last year). It would be great if menu could offer a 20 sushi per course as an alternative option so we could enjoy a wider variety of fish; sushi dishes with Kanji characters, culturally valued; as well as other soups and traditional cuisines usually available in a high-end omakase course. Set up an emailing list to receive updates.

I hesitate to post this, because I don’t ever want Tanoshi to change. It is by far the best value for Omakase in the city- I’d rather come here than many of the fancy places that over promise and under deliver. The bathroom is a horror show, but it’s SO bad that it’s obviously a choice and engenders a certain kind of respect.

I was here Saturday for dinner with my boyfriend. We reserved the 6pm seats for omakase. The sushi was good, the fish seemed fresh and every piece was very decadent. The server who seated us and served us water was very kind. However, our sushi chef was not so friendly.
One of the most important parts of the omakase experience for me is the customer service and interactions with the chef. Our chef who we were sitting directly in front of barely made eye contact with us. He just seemed like he wanted to give us our sushi pieces quickly and just get us out of there. I was very disappointed even when he was telling us the names of the pieces. He said each name very quickly and when we misheard him, he seemed irritated that he had to repeat it. Just our whole entire time there was exactly 45 minutes. It was too obvious he was just there because it's his job. I couldn't tell if he was just having a bad day but he was not nice and it gave me a sour taste in my mouth and I couldn't fully enjoy my dinner.
It was the most boring and unsatisfying omakase dinners I have ever had in my life. It felt like a waste of money because it felt like I had to quickly eat and get out of there.
I wanted to take my time and enjoy my sushi and really understand where each piece came from and have a friendly interaction with the chef. Isn't that what omakase is all about?
I really feel like I could've had my dinner somewhere else where I can take my time and actually have a conversation with the chef. That's the omakase I know.

One of the best sushi dinners we have had. The place is an excellent "hole in the wall" style restaurant. It has specific times for serving a few dedicated sittings for specific times in the evening fo Omakase dinners. This is a BYOB, and even if you forget this there's an adjacent store to buy drinks and come back to the table.
The food is exquisite. The service is very good in a "bar like" atmosphere. But it is extremely expensive.

Amazing experience. Went for lunch and will certainly come back for dinner next time I am in town. I don’t think I’ve ever had sushi like this, not even in Japan- everything is perfectly marinated and seasoned so you don’t need extra condiments. It’s also very decently priced - $55 excl. tip and taxes gets you 6 nigiri, half a maki, a hand roll and miso soup. My companion added a special roll for an additional $13. Thank you for a lovely meal!

Very cozy place, not your typical fancy omakase, very down to earth, chef also shows you where on the map your fish is from, which is cute if you're into geography.

Stunning, great experience. I love essential and tasty food. This is the place. You call and pre-order (and pay upfront -we had the dinner menu).. they buy only the fish you need and is so fresh that for Manhattan is a real exception (unless you go in a 1000$ place). I’ll add pics because no comments can validate as much the place, just look at the color of the fish meet (the odd looking one is yolk and sea urchin, I loved it)

This place is fantastic. It rivals Michelin star places at a fraction of the cost. You are missing out by not trying this place out. Do not judge a book by its cover.

I had one of the best experiences of my life here. Decided to book myself an early birthday solo adventure and it was worth every penny.
The intimate setting made for a more interesting dinner and the fish was top notch. Can’t recommend Tanoshi enough.

Came here at the recommendation of a friend and so glad she told me about this spot as I never would have found it on my own. It's a bit off the beaten path but worth every step. Came for the omakase lunch on a Saturday. Had to wait for 2 seats to open up as they only seat 10 people total. For $55 per person we each received 6 pieces of nigiri, half a maki roll, one hand roll and a miso soup. The fish was so fresh. They don't give you soy sauce because you really don't need it. Just the right amount of wasabi, warm rice, amazing marinades and sauces brushed onto each piece. A real experience. Highly recommended.

Thank you Chef Tanoshi San and his staff for unforgettable sushi omakase experience. We are from Canada and we decided to try this special omakase restaurant after reading all the raving reviews. The place is small and you need to reserve maybe few days in advance. Make sure not to be late! The sushis and sashimis were to die for and we never ate something so delicious. They are the freshest I have tasted and their rice is delicious. You can only taste top quality rare ingredients and you will not be disappointed. You actually see the art through his delicate dishes. Every plate was prepared with passion, love and art. Every single dish was delicious, and the quantity was just enough to make you feel full. You can see how hardworking each staff member is and we are really impressed by their hard work ethics and most importantly their love and passion for making us memorable sushi. I know that taking pictures might be viewed as disrespectful, but I cannot help but to capture all the art and share it with the work. Arigatou Chef Tanoshi San and staff. I will definitely come back next time whenever we visit New York.

Had my first ever Omakase at Tanoshi in 2014 & it felt a little awkward to be seated in front of the chef(s). Wasn't prepared to be mindblown by Toshio (Toshio x Oona 2016 in this review) with his curated & customised tiny maki/sushi (less rice, more fish magic, got a small gob so please make it fit!). Oooh-Aaah-Wowww-Haha aplenty across the table to make me blush > laugh > gobble my perfectly Hobbit-bite-sized meal gracefully. No NYC food hunt is complete without dinner here...I hope to be back one day to have a toast in your tribute (to many firsts!) because your joy, kindness & legacy lives on - albeit across the Pacific Ocean. Gochisousama & Domo arigato, Toshio-san. Usagi-chan misses you & Triple X shots, oyasumi~

Dude. I can't show you pics bc food was too good to waste time taking photos of. Great service and everything as so fresh. The chefs take it srrrrious and tell you to eat it right away as they serve it to you bc it's the perfect temp. And it was. Fatty tuna omg. Really lovely spread. 12/10 would come again. So worth it

Amazing omakase experience at a great price. The sushi was amazingly fresh and delicious. The service was first class. Román was very kind and friendly. We were able to bring our own sake. They heard it was my birthday and gave me a special dish with a candle. I would love to come back.

After a friend recommended it, we made a reservation for their lunch Omakase on our most recent trip.
The seating is very limited and reservations are required. For lunch, seatings are 45 minutes.
We got 6 nigiri, a sushi roll, a hand roll, and miso soup. All of the fish was fantastic. It's hard for me to say much more because I'm not sure what we got.
The chef talked really quietly, so we never really knew which fish we were eating and I wish they would have given us a paper or something with what we ate on it. That being said, we loved it all.
If you like sushi, this is a great spot!

I come here occasionally for lunch, really good quality and very reasonable price, you are unlikely to find this kind of sushi bar in the city, one thing to remind you, if you might be late for the reservation the 1:45 slot could be good option for you, since any other time slot you might be rushed to finish your sushi while others are waiting outside, which might ruin your experience.

Absolutely delicious omakase experience in a cozy hole in the wall setting. One of the tastiest I've had the chance to experience! Friendly staff, don't forget to BYOSake, enjoy the food, and have fun! Here's the only picture I took of my favorite bite that night. Let the flavor guide you.

2021 Update: Still amazing!
2020 visit (pre-COVID):
Sublime. 14 or so pieces/dishes served in this omakase-only sushi bar. Option to add in more. All high quality, well balanced, and delicious. Chef was friendly, funny, and obviously knew his stuff. Had a great play list too. BYOB!

Hole in the wall omakase bar at really reasonable prices. The chefs only accommodate 4 persons at a time so you really get to know and chat with the chefs. Really interesting hearing about the qualities of the fish and the accompanying garnishes going into the sushi, the chefs know a lot and if you have any questions they'll definitely answer them. Overall Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar was a very memorable experience that will bring me to come back again.

It's a special omakase experience at Tanoshi, given the limited seating and exquisite food juxtaposed with the shop's humble facade. The sushi is impeccably prepared. The chefs and staff are friendly and the service moves quickly. The only downside (easily remedied) is that it's BYOB.
