Traditional sushi often using fish flown in from Japan served in a minimalist, bamboo setting.
Spent a few nights in NYC with the besties for one of their birthdays. I was already spending an omakase amount rate every night at the hotel by the 9.11 memorial, and seeing New York but I wanted to try at least one decent, renowned sushi spot since I heard New York has some of the best sushi in the US. This place was the most affordable Michelin star restaurant on the guide at $170 for 15 pieces vs $400+ at other spots. Which meant I was able to order additional items from the a la carte menu as well and be satiated. My friends and I had no complaints for what this restaurant offered. Service was top notch and the fish tasted great

Boyfriend picked this place out for my birthday and it did not disappoint! Service, food, and overall quality of experience was great for a birthday dinner.
We got the 15-course omakase at the bar and added the cucumber miso appetizer and some sake. About two hours in total for all the food to be served.
Like most omakase places they do timed entry so multiple parties get seated and served at the same time. The chef on our side of the bar had 7 people to serve in total so spacing of each course was good timing to digest.
The food was fresh and delicious. Besides the nice cuts of salmons, tunas, and yellowtails, they had prawns, scallops, and uni as part of their offerings too. One noticeable difference of this place is their fish selection comes from many countries (not just Japan), with many from Spain, New Zealand, even some US states, and more.
While I wish I got more photos, the atmosphere is on the quieter, sophisticated side so we didn’t feel comfortable doing photos. It was a good experience to have our phones away! Would definitely go to this place again for another special occasion.

I really wanted to like this place, because my friend recommended it to me. But I have had better omakase experiences that left me wowed and tastebuds dancing. The sushi was fresh and tasty, don’t get me wrong. The experience just lacked something and the price point didn’t make me feel like it worth it overall.

This spot is amazing. You don’t find many michelin level sushi spots that offer a la cart ordering, never mind takeout. Ambiance is stellar and food is a 10. Only downside is that they don’t have any meat lover options, so it makes it hard to come here with my boyfriend who doesn’t eat fish.

Solid five star Michelin Star service and experience. Sushi tasting menus was superb and service was top notch. I would say some of the best service without being pushy I’ve had in this scale of restaurant.
Saki and wine selection was stellar and a standard beer selection.

My second time here. It was one of the great sushi place I went here in NY. On my second visit I tried the omakase table. Though I dont feel that much different from being on the normal table. You get a sheet of paper and order whatever you like on both table. The only difference is, in the table you got served 6-8 sushi at a time. In omakase table you got served one by one.
However, I enjoyed the sushi in both visit. They serve it fresh. And some of the sushi are already dipped in soy sauce or have a hint of wasabi in it. I really enjoy going here for dinner. If you like a more buttery textured sushi, get their uni and also their fatty salmon/ tuna.
The service is great and they have a great ambiance too.

For non counter seating: fish quality is good but the rice is REALLY lacking. The texture of the rice is dry and lack of granularity. I’ve had better sushi rice at local takeouts.

Christmas Eve dinner was a memorable evening, thanks in large part to Sushi Yasuda. The service, table settings, ambiance, and pairings were well-executed. The knowledge of each dish item and personalized recommendations were spot on, and hence my decision not to share what I ordered. I would like others to experience the thrill I had trying their recommendations! There was no pressure to order something in particular or upsell, rather genuine shared interest in flavors and experiences by the team. The subtle differences in the flavors and taste of each fish were quite noticeable due to the quality, freshness, and simplicity. I also tried appetizer (small plates) dishes that were not my usual taste, and was pleasantly surprised each time. I now have a few new favorites! I enjoyed their more traditional menu, as it reminded me of sushi in Japan. On that note and an FYI: they do not have popularized sushi rolls (e.g. rainbow roll, dragon roll, etc.) or hot kitchen dishes (e.g. udon, salmon teriyaki, etc.) you see in many westernized Japanese restaurants nowadays. The rolls are maki rolls, usually with only a single fish or vegetable in rice and seaweed. And, their hot dishes are small simple tapas-style appetizers. There is a simplicity to the dishes served here that really allows you to appreciate the taste of a wide variety of fish that is rare to experience otherwise. I look forward to dining at Sushi Yasuda again in 2025! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant for over 10 years now. I was there many times a month when I lived in NYC and I still go back to it every time I visit New York. The fish is fresh, simple, and Omakase 15 pieces is always just purely incredible. I love the waiters, the chefs, the atmosphere. One of my favorite places ever!

I really wanted to like this place. The vibe is awesome, no music, stripped back restaurant that transports you outside of NYC. However, the omakase experience was lackluster. The sashimi wasn't all that flavorful, and the sushi was overpowered by a rice vinegar taste, meaning all the flavors of the fish were hidden (they may not have been there at all because the sashimi was also this way). Even the miso soup was sub-par. Service was ok, long wait between courses. I wouldn't go back again unfortunately at that price point.

TLDR: Fast food style sushi with tiny portions - My worst omakase experience ever.
I don't know how this place got a Michelin star.
Preface: I was initially super excited to have booked this place for dinner during Valentine's Day but was the initial experience was disappointing. We purposely booked a omakase counter reservation but we were seated at a standard dine in table in a nook. I explained to our hostess that we booked a omakase counter reservation to which she replied "you can still order omakase here". I had to ask for a manager before they gave me my omakase counter seating. We waited 30 minutes in total, 15 for a table to clear and another 15 for the omakase counter to clear.
Environment: Very open, not intimate at all. Felt like I was sitting at a Hibachi counter at an Asian fusion restaurant or a food court. The environment was loud, as there were many people in the restaurant and my girlfriend and I had to raise our voices to speak to each other even though we were sitting next to each other. When I think of Omakase I think high end and intimate, not a loud food court setting.
Food: The food looked fresh, a bare minimum for any good sushi restaurant but the portions were small with thinly cut fish (in comparison with high end omakase spots even those not Michelin starred). We ordered the 15 piece and it was the first time that my girlfriend and I left a dinner omakase hungry, as we're not the type to eat a lot. Usually a 12 piece omakase would have us full to the brim. A couple sushi pieces were also poorly put together and fell apart as we picked it up. Additionally the sushi pieces were not unique or special, even the appetizers and dessert weren't special, they tasted like something you'd get at a take out restaurant. A few hours later my girlfriend and I had slightly upset stomachs, which was the first time it has happened after any omakase.
Chef interaction: Since we were seated at the end of the counter our chef had to make a lot of orders for the table diners (unsure if he was a new chef and they had him do all the busy work). We literally had no interaction with the chef aside from him introducing the sushi. Zero effort in any sort of additional communication.
Misc: We checked our jackets and my girlfriend's bag, when we came to retrieve it they couldn't find our items for 15-20 minutes and when they did they gave my girlfriend's bag to the wrong person.
Would never come back here again, I just cant wrap my head around how this place got a Michelin star.

Overall: 2/5
Food: 2/5 - I came here with my party initially planning on getting the omakase but after seeing how the experience would be, I opted on doing a la carte and got two handrolls and two sushi pieces. I got the toro handroll and salmon handroll and salmon and yellowtail sushi. I thought the handrolls would be rolls cut up into 6 pieces - as that is what is said on the menu but it came out as just a roll making it a bit difficult to eat. The taste was also just any sushi you can find at a low-mid price range sushi place so I'm not too sure what the high pricepoint is.
Value: 1/5 - My meal ended up to around $56 for two small handrolls and two sushi pieces. I am fine paying a high price if the value is there but the taste was just like any cheap sushi place so I cannot justify paying this price. My cousin got the omakase and it was like no other omakase experience in a bad way where the customer is unable to view the sushi making and is just given the sushi pieces all at once. The sushi pieces itself were also not that impressive for the pricepoint. I have been to omakase places in nyc for a lower pricepoint for better tasting/visually pleasing sushi. My cousin was also disappointed with her omakase experience and I am glad I did not opt to get that.
Service: 4/5 - Our server was nice and the interior of the restaurant is nice.
Overall, this place was extremely disappointing. After walking out, my whole party all agreed that this place had been the worst sushi place we had all been to just because the value is not there. I would not recommend or come back simpy because the value is not there and there are so many other places that can serve this quality of sushi for a quarter of the price. The only good thing from this place is the pretty interior.

After reading all the reviews before our trip to NYC, we decided trying Sushi Yasuda walkable from our hotel. We ordered from the a la carte sushi/maki menu I also ordered something that wasn’t on that menu- Futo maki. The rice was perfect in doneness and seasoning but the way they wrapped the whole thing was unusually loose it kept spilling the eggs and vegetables. It was $20 per maki - unheard of price. I missed the futo maki from Oga’s back home in Massachusetts Out of the 3 kinds of Macke rel sushi only one was good - most expensive one at $10.75. The other two were just okay. King salmon maki and yellowtail maki avocado maki - all maki was pencil thin and fish inside was mushy. The only thing I liked - the miso soup & Chawan mushi and the single mackerel expensive sushi. Be warned- everything is tiny portion. Also the sushi comes already seasoned and wasabi inside so don’t dip in the soy sauce. This restaurant is over rated. They also had no answer to our question - why do you have Chirashi $45 only for takeout? Cannot order inside restaurant. Why???!!!

Came here for lunch omakase at the bar unaware of the exact menu. The chef served us oyster sushi, which neither of us are very fond of. I just ate it but she couldn’t because of the intensity of flavor. We politely told him she can’t eat raw oyster. Without even responding, he leans over, picks up the sushi and plops it on my plate. I was very embarrassed to have brought my partner to this establishment.

Omakase is top notch, the fish is super fresh and can taste the difference. I have been Nakazawa before the fish quality is way beyond. This is the by far best sushi I had. I hesitated before due to the mixed comments, but forgot those they are classic and the sushi is very very good. I do not get the negative comments at all.

Incredibly underwhelming sushi. Fish was fresh (hopefully) but the chef showed no creativity. I would say that this could be said of grocery store sushi.

I have never spent so much money for such terrible fish. We got the 12-piece omakase and at least four pieces tasted fishy. Barely above the quality of conveyor belt sushi. It was a Saturday so the restaurant doesn’t even have the end-of-sushi-week excuse. Michelin needs to remove the place from its list.

the classic New York omakase experience is right here. nigiri and sashimi are top notch, attention to detail paid to every aspect of each piece that's prepared. service is attentive and unintrusive. the environment elevates the sights, sounds, and taste, allowing for thoughtful appreciation of the chef's work.

had a rly good experience here. ordered the omakase 15, and I felt like it was reasonably priced for a one michelin star.
I wanted a separate bowl of just their sushi rice bc it was so good. loved the texture of each piece. my favs were kanpachi, botan ebi, toro, and hokkaido uni - but these are my favs everywhere. but I approve!
we rly liked chef kazu - he was quiet but funny and I felt like he was paying attention to what we might need throughout our meal even if he seemed like he was doing his own thing. would love to have chef kazu again when I go back in the future! service in general was p good. they refilled my water so often that I would forget if I drank water bc it was full all the time.

Perfection.
Got lucky and found a seat at the bar for omakase. I'll be brief as I'm not incredibly well versed with omakase in NYC. I've noticed some places have a plethora of toppings vs more traditional sushi. Yasuda is the latter, and they do it incredibly well. The fish is incredibly fresh, rice is perfect. Service impeccable.
Only sushi I've had in the US that competes with Japan. I'm already looking forward to returning!

I had really high expectations because a friend had recommended it to me but I was really displeased by the sushi. Fish and rice both tasted and felt kind of stale and didn’t taste well balanced. Maybe we messed up by not sitting at the counter but I feel like that shouldn’t make the experience so abysmal

We had been looking forward to having dinner here.
The food was disappointing. We ordered the sushi and sashimi omakase. Many of the fish pieces were not fresh however the sashimi was delicious.
The service was great. The servers paid close attention to water and tea refills- they filled it without even asking. They waited an appropriate amount of time in between courses and were attentive without being overly interruptive.
The restaurant decor is pretty impressive. Floor to ceiling wood creates a soothing and refreshing atmosphere within the restaurant. The accents were minimalistic and very nicely put together.

Completely lived up to the hype for me!
Every piece of sushi was fresh, tasty and filling. We tried the Uni and if that’s your thing I strongly suggest it! So buttery and delish.
The unfiltered sake was so good too - we drank 2/3 pitchers for a group of 4. The waitstaff were patient and explained everything and made great recommendations.

My first omakase experience, and Sushi Yasuda did not disappoint!
Each course was an explosion of umami. Needless to say, all the fish was perfectly fresh and expertly sliced. The rice was tasty and pleasantly warm (but not too much). I loved each and every single piece of sushi, but my favorite may have been the fatty tuna. I rounded out the meal with the ara-jiru miso soup and a carafe (or two) of crisp, cold Hakurakusei sake. The staff was even generous enough to provide me with a complimentary fruit plate for dessert for my birthday, which made me a little emotional! Everything was outstanding.
The restaurant itself is gorgeous. The warm bamboo-dominated interior hit me as both modern and traditional at the same time. It was an inviting and comforting dinnertime safe haven from the intense cold outside. I felt transported to Japan.
Sushi has been my favorite food for years, and I knew I wanted to visit someplace special for this particular birthday dinner. I'm immensely thankful that I chose SY!

The food was good, the service was good. Was it what we expected from a Michilen Star restuarant? Not at all. When we arrived, on time, for our reservation, we were instructed to wait in the vestibule, which was cold and drafty. The fish was very good (eel sashimi and sea bass appetizer were amazing). Given my past experience, I expected more from the service ( it wasn't bad, it just wasn't great). Was it worth a $400+ pricepoint for 3... not even close. And I'm really sorry it wasn't.

While the servers displayed commendable knowledge and cool demeanor, my experience at Sushi Yasuda was marred by a notable disparity in treatment. The manager, a gentleman in a three-piece suit, exhibited rudeness and unwelcoming behavior, particularly towards guests without reservations. The uptight atmosphere, coupled with occasional unprofessionalism, detracted from what should have been an enjoyable dining experience. Despite the restaurant’s reputation for excellent fish, the hyper-Japanese vibe and the manager’s demeanor created an ambiance that left much to be desired. Additionally, the appetizers fell short of expectations, contributing to an overall sense of overpricing. Sushi Yasuda appears to be coasting on the legacy of Mr. Yasuda and Chef Mitsu, raising questions about its long-term sustainability.

Everything was fine just very stiff.
The chef needs to loosen up a bit.
He says the name of each piece so quickly, so quietly, so indistinctly that I'm not sure what i'm eating. I asked him to repeat himself many times but just gave up after the tenth time.
I understand that I chose omakase but the expectation was that the chef will work with you to make sure you fully enjoy your dinner. After all you are spending $300 on fish. When I asked him for a particular bite, he got all gruff saying "Am I choosing or are you choosing?" Very unwelcoming attitude. Didn't introduce himself, just put fish down. I would not return. Sushi Nakazawa had a much better attitude.

The pieces range from not bad to great, but with most being on the "not bad" end. There are definitely places with more consistently good options that are also cheaper....
Service is very good.
Some a la carte tips: It's the same amount of fish whether you pick sushi or sashimi. Cut rolls are a bit bigger than hand rolls. The rice in cut rolls is not great, nor is the seaweed remarkable.

For Michelin star sushi experience that goes above and beyond this is the spot! The decor is a simple yet elegant makes you feel transported from the streets a midtown to a wonderfully calm oasis.
The sushi was divine from the first piece till the last piece. For sushi lovers, I suggest the market price omakase, which ranges between $150-$250 but they will serve you about $150-$175 worth and ask if you’d like to continue. Again if you let them choose. If you choose the pieces you want could also be more expensive. Insider tip, not all fish on the menu given is all the fish you can order (potentially due to seasonality / availability). Which also makes the experience slightly different every time compared to set menu options omakase spots, but also allows you to manage allergies and personal taste/preferences. The market price omakase gives you an opportunity to try some more unique fish, compared to typical sushi spots.
The real special part about this spot is the rice. It’s seasoned in such a way that is different than most sushi spots, that just makes each piece that much more pleasant and enjoyable to consume. Bite by bite I just felt as though it couldn’t get better but it did. My favorite piece is definitely the grill fatty tuna with sea salt chips and lemon squeeze. It’s usually the last one they serve but it is like the A5 wagyu of the sea. All the sushi pieces we got were amazing (none disappointed). We got a fruit platter as part of the omakase, which was a nice touch to finish the meal.
Service is great. Remembered we were celebrating something and included a little candle with the fruits. Very attentive to notice if your water is low, or you need a new finger towel as you enjoy the meal. Will be returning soon!

Afterwards reordering favorites until we were stuffed and ended with Mochi was fun!

Great sushi, great staff, very nice interior. All around a great experience and good value given how much sushi cost these days!

Experiencing the culinary delights of a Michelin-starred sushi restaurant in NYC is unparalleled. Opting for the Omakase, where the chef takes the reins, we enjoyed exquisite selections such as bluefin tuna, Alaska king salmon, succulent oysters, freshwater eel, Ama ebi, and sea urchin. The impeccable freshness and meticulous preparation of each dish are evident. By the way, their wait staff service is beyond excellent.

Our chef was clearly ready to clock out because he pushed out every omakase piece with haste. I mean before we could finish chewing a piece he served the next. It was done so quickly and with little care the rice was falling apart as we picked up the sushi. Not what I expected from a Michelin Star restaurant

Top notch food, drinks, atmosphere and especially service. I highly recommend coming here for a chic environment while savoring your meal. Yeah, it was that good.

Good sushi, iffy service. Had to ask for our drinks three times. Also my friend has a shrimp allergy and when we asked if the soup has shrimp the server acted like he was “choking” to make fun… lol?

The manager here is offensive and discriminative against customers. Avoid this place if you have the choice.

Probably the best sushi restaurant in NYC. I would recommend to the Omakase and to sit at the bar for the full experience!

Sushi Yasuda is one of the finest Japanese restaurants in NYC. We have eaten here on two occasions over the years. Once in the restaurant, which has a very minimalist look, and the other time, we actually did a take out order for a special anniversary dinner. The food was spectacular on both occasions, and as you can see from the photos, the anniversary dinner was a hit!

OMG - so good - unbelievable sushi in every bite. Still talking about it two weeks later

We had the omakase by the bar. Service was excellent but we waited quite a bit before the chef started serving us. They even gave us our first fish before our appetizer.
Everything was great except the Mackerel. They also gave us an option to substitute that but we tried it anyway as this was a Michelin star restaurant.
The food was great. Rice was especially delicious. But I think they could have spent more time explaining the fish, and maybe gave us options on what to do with the shrimp head (other omakase can either fry or serve in soup).
But overall, still a great place and definitely should try it once.

Tried the 15-piece omakase. While we didn't dislike any of the sushi, which were very fresh, there were definitely some we enjoyed more than others and had higher expectations for the price we paid (eg, eel vs uni). However, service was great and we had a good time overall.

Once upon a time it was the best sushi I'd ever had. Back then Chef Yasuda himself was running the omakase. If you were lucky enough to be personally served by him, you were in for a treat. He held court, regaling you with all sorts of tales. And for his final trick, he asked you where you're from, and he just so happened to have fish from whatver local body of water you live near. I had omakase with Yasuda at least a half dozen times and I never saw him fail to pull off that trick with fellow diners.
Alas that was a long time ago. Today's Yasuda isn't yesterday's Yasuda. Yasuda himself left many years ago, and the chefs who replaced him do a fine job, but it's just not quite the same. The rice, once a signature quality of the old Yasuda, was a bit too loose and sometimes fell apart before hitting my mouth. That would have been blasphemy in the old days.
They had a reasonable variety of fish, but mainly stuck to the classics. Gone are the days of Moroccan uni, the aged otoro, the torched wood just lightly imparting a hint of smoke to the salmon. Everything was by the book - fresh fish, rice, brush of soy. Rinse and repeat.
Overall, the omakase was still very good, although my specific chef was a little heavy handed with the salt on the rice. But among omakase sushi, it's gone from being the runaway leader to being in the middle of the pack.
If you do go, you can find some nice deals with their chefs choice combos. That feels like the right option for where they are now.

Solid five star Michelin Star service and experience. Sushi tasting menus was superb and service was top notch. I would say some of the best service without being pushy I’ve had in this scale of restaurant.
Saki and wine selection was stellar and a standard beer selection.

Sushi in its purest form. No flashiness, no show…just incredible ingredients, impeccable service and intuitive chefs. You cannot do better for a mid-price-range omakase imo.

Fantastic omakase experience. If you want to spend a little less, I would suggest an a la carte order of some of the lower priced items, but regardless, it's absolutely worth the price. Especially considering the fact that many NYC sushi establishments are charging $300-$400 for a similar omakase. The fish had tremendous flavor, cut and prepared perfectly, and don't sleep on the fantastic sake list. Highly recommend. Top tier of NYC sushi restaurants.

To be honest stuff was great and food was delicious but we had our reservation for omakase at the sushi bar at 9 and the restaurant was closed by 10! We were rushed to eat and finish. Not the « Omakase « experience we were expecting! If you decide to go take an early reservation only.

Lived in Japan for a while, their restaurants and places to eat are always top notch. I look forward to dining here. Tipping is such a barbaric practice.

My girlfriend and I each had the 12-piece omakase at the bar and it was outstanding. Worth the price for sushi lovers. The atmosphere was ok, nothing special but very clean and minimalist. Excellent service. Minus one star because the menu was on a QR code.

Very nice sushi omakase. We tried the 15 courses and all of the fish we really fresh and well presented. I only didn’t like the oyster, too slimy for me but our friends did enjoyed very much. The atmosphere is really nice, the sushi chef who was in charge of us made a really good effort in explaining us all of the courses.

Service was great as to be expected. We did the omakase menu but the sushi rice was a bit too salty and the nigiri always felt like it was about to fall apart midway as I was picking it up from the service plate.

🪱🪱🪱LIVE PARASITIC WORM FOUND IN FISH
We got the market price omakase, and things started out well. But on our first dish with sashimi, I found a LIVE parasitic worm in my sardines still wriggling around. I picked it up with my chopsticks to inspect it and then showed the sushi chef, who took it away, killed it, apologized and took the sardines away.
At this point we're of course a bit uncomfortable, but we continued to enjoy our meal which was delicious but maybe not worth the price tag.
Before we paid, I grabbed our wait staff to tell her about the parasitic worm as at this point I'm surprised that nobody from the establishment has come to talk to us about it except for the initial apology from the sushi chef. Our waitress acknowledged it and just said she'd let "them" know and left. The chef then again apologized and let us know that they did not charge us for the sardines.
I expected better handling of this situation given that they're a Michelin establishment, but it was extremely disappointing. We're made to feel like getting a live parasite inside your fish is no big deal when personally it was extremely unnerving. Oh they did give us some shrimp heads on the house, but I don’t know if it was supposed to be a gesture for the worm or not.
Without the worm incident, food quality for the price was probably 4/5.

Good Omakase, though far from perfect. A weird sitting arrangement, quite honestly, in a back room, which might be more suitable to serve as a private room.
If this place has a Michelin star, then Mojo, for example, should have two.
