The sushi is excellent - super fresh and inspired, with that hard-to-distill balance of complexity and simplicity in every bite. Sushi W solidly refuses to engage with the over-priced, over-hyped, and over-branded restaurant scene that defines much of the current NYC food culture and instead defines itself through its excellence (food, service, ambiance) at an affordable price. Get yourself a reservation at Sushi W. You will be ever grateful you did.

This is my honest opinion.
We went for lunch.

One thing I didn’t like was the smell of Chlorine at the entrance.

We were surprised to have a trainee do are sushi but all professional has training time. Personally I would like to have him more trained before he gets to the counter.

And the person at the entrance mistook our course. But we did get what we ordered once they realized it was a mistake. I’ve mentioned at the reservation as anniversary so it’s a bit disappointed, very little.

The owner was there and he was very nice explaining us the sushi. And I did like his manners very polite while he trained sushi chef.

The sushi was awesome!!! We both enjoyed and loved.

For the price you get a great quality sushi.

Overall I would go again. And do recommend for sushi beginners too, and will definitely bring my kids next time.

Been here a couple of times - I've always gotten the $68 premium option (gratuity included!) and found the food quality to be excellent and consistent. There's a bit of topping on most nigiris here - a nice addition that still lets the freshness of the seafood be the main event. They serve enough pieces to leave me feeling full, unlike some other omakase places at this price point.

Service was always cordial and keep the place running smoothly. There's a card by each seat/party that lists the pieces to be served, in order, so it's easy to follow along. Chef Francis also explains the pieces as he serves them. The no-tipping policy is definitely a plus as well.

Came here a few weeks ago and loved it! We got to sit at the bar/counter in the back but the entire restaurant felt roomy and quiet (in a good way). The premium menu is definitely worth it and while I can't remember all the things I had, I remember loving the arctic char. The ambience was great and the service wonderful! I left feeling stuffed for sure - which I can't necessarily say is the case for many omakase spots!

I love sushi and sashimi, but omakase isn't my favorite because I tend to eat a lot. Recently, I went on a day trip with a friend and made a reservation for lunch at Sushi W for an omakase experience, which was very reasonably priced. I really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, and the omakase was quite good.

Definitely a favorite restaurant in the city with some of the best Omakase you’ll ever eat in the US. Super friendly staff and highly skilled sushi itamaes. Make sure you make a reservation because they only allow around 10-12 diners per sitting. Highly recommend you try it if you haven’t been. One located on both the UWS and the UES.

This is my second time coming to this establishment and it was horrible.

They rushed with the serving portions. At one point, I had 2 servings on my plate and they suggested for me to leave it on my plate. Any nigiri that was seared became cold very quickly and was not appetizing. I have never been rushed before. Especially after the same mistake

Also, before we ate dinner, we came there a bit early and I asked what pairs well. So I’m just going to state what they said the second time that there is no true pairing with the sushi that goes well. Which is like… why have a pairing? I even clarified before we had the disagreement, what goes well with the leaner and fattier fish. And I had to answer my own question because they didn’t know how to answer it. And when we found out there was a pairing, they re-clarified the previous statement .

The sushi quality for the price is great and really good value. But I was very taken aback by their cockroach problem on my most recent visit. It was wild to see them crawling on the bar, right past my plate and up the walls too. Really took away from the meal and ruined my appetite. I've been here a few times but I'm not sure I'll be returning. I also recommend adding some hooks under the bar so guests can hang their belongings.

I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Sushi W, and I can confidently say that it was one of the best culinary experiences I've ever had. Everything from the moment I walked in was perfect—the ambiance, the service, and most importantly, the food.

The sushi at Sushi W is nothing short of heavenly. Every bite was a delightful explosion of flavors that left me craving more. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the rolls were crafted with such precision and care that you could taste the artistry in each piece. It’s clear that the chefs here are masters of their craft, delivering food that is not only delicious but also a feast for the eyes.

The service was equally impressive. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm, making me feel welcome from the moment I arrived. They took the time to explain the menu, offer recommendations, and ensure that every aspect of my dining experience was flawless. It's rare to find a place where both the food and service are of such high quality, but Sushi W has truly mastered the art of hospitality.

The cleanliness of the restaurant also stood out to me. The environment was spotless, and every detail was taken care of, which only added to the overall experience of dining here.

I will definitely be returning to Sushi W often, and I can’t recommend it highly enough to anyone who loves sushi, quality, and a top-notch dining experience. Whether you're a sushi enthusiast or just looking for an exceptional meal, this place is a must-visit ❤️

Do NOT eat here. They rush you to complete your meal. You have exactly one hour to finish 17 pieces. They will serve you more than one piece at a time even if you haven’t finished the last one. That’s not an enjoyable evening especially when you’re on a date! For $100+ save your money!

We went here for the dinner omakase menu. We just went with the basic, which was more than enough food. The food was all excellent, at a reasonable pricepoint. The hand rolls were my favorite, as were the fatty tuna items. Some of the items felt a bit too creative, with things like lemon and basil seasoning; personally I would have preferred to lean more on the fish itself, but overall super, super good!

Sushi Experience №46

TLDR: If you want guilt-free omakase without blowing tons of cash, Sushi W is my choice. Personally - I prefer the UES location. Splurge for the premium, it's a much better value.

For the price that it is, their sushi rice (shari) is really excellent here. It's a got nice al dente chew, it's vinegary and there's a good selection of fish.

This is the only omakase under $100 I will go to because the value is there and the flavor. At $68 inclusive of gratuity for 14 nigiri and 2 temakis. Cannot be beat.

For the $90 to $120ish range - honestly I'd rather skip it and just go to a proper omakase. Most of the quality omakases start at the $150 price point.

I have to say I was a quite disappointed. The food was wonderful, however every time I experience Omakase, each fish is thoroughly explained and thoughtfully prepared right in front of the customer by a passionate sushi expert. Not here. Last night, each piece was hastily placed on a plate, stacking up next to each other in such a rushed manner that it was very hard to enjoy the experience. The sushi chef didn’t say a word to us and looked so uninterested in giving us an experience. We were rushed from the moment we sat to the moment we got up out of our seats. I understand that they have to turn over seats, but please figure out a way to give your customers an experience, not just a bunch of food in a short amount of time. I would rather pay twice as much for a true Omakase experience. Won’t return.

July 5, 2024 we visited this restaurant on the strong recommendation of my Japanese friend, my beautiful friend, pianist Nami. It was hard to get a reservation on the weekend, so we went for lunch on a weekday, and it was a clean sushi omakase in the style of fine dining. We ordered several additional dishes, and they were all fresh and delicious. The refreshing and fresh sashimi with a lemon base was really delicious, and the chef and owner Joe, who serve the delicious and sincere omakase, carefully watch the customers' eating process.

Thank you.
It was really delicious. The reason I took off half a star... Please reduce my soy sauce a little next time. I want to feel the fresh fish more.

The best part was that the tip was included in the price of the meal. I thought the $150 was worth it.

The fish preparation was excellent. It enhanced the natural flavor or the fish. The service was mediocre. They started late, which is okay with me (but I understand that they have hourly reservations). However, they had no time to ask (as they normally do) if we wanted anything or to even let us know what we were at the end. They just came with the check.
They need a longer curtain for the kitchen, I could see the neon light and the cleaning supplies. Not pretty.

Visited 10 months ago

Sushi Experience №78

Remember that this is Omakase sushi, with a strict one-hour seating policy. What this means is that every single piece of sushi is handmade in front of you and served to you piece by piece. And there's nothing really except for sushi--no tempura or other "typical" Japanese food.

That being said, this place is amazing. The sushi might be the best you've had outside of Tokyo. The Sake is top-shelf and the service is exceptional.

Reserve in advance and respect your reservation (be on time). You'll be served promptly, efficiently and above all, warmly.

And you won't be disappointed!

The target audience seems to young locals on a budget who don't mind the lack of service, decor, consistency. We were surprised to enter what looked like an escape room- groups of kids perched in an undecorated industrial box with a strong BO smell and non-working ventilation. None of the staff were Japanese. Not for anyone with any true Omakase dining experience. You'll be as shocked as we were.

Tucked on Lexington Avenue in the Upper Eastside of Manhattan is an inconspicuous restaurant. In front of it is a chalk board with a deal that’s too good to be true” SUSHI W: Basic Omakase $53… Premium Omakase $68.” With high-end sushi restaurants opening left and right in New York City, Sushi W stands out for being affordable, yet not sacrificing on quality and taste.
Founded in the 2021 by the wife of a Japanese investment banker, Sushi W’s Upper Westside location exploded in popularity. Her husband quit his job and the couple dedicated their livelihoods to revolutionizing the Omakase experience in the city, and recently opened their second location.
The restaurant is small, fitting around 16 diners at one time. Everyone gathers around the sushi bar for a spectacular one-hour performance, the chef’s technique right under your eye. With up to 17 courses, the pace suits the hustle-bustle of the city, but still leaves enough time in between each piece to savor the fresh ingredients and subtle flavor combinations.
Sushi W is an excellent place for both first-time Omakase diners and experienced ones alike. My favorite roll was the uni (sea urchin), which literally melted in my mouth. At the end, there is an interactive course where the chef constructs a handroll in the diner’s hand. Between each course, the restaurant owner chatted with us, explaining the founding story behind the shop and the ingredients behind the sushi.
Still not completely sold? The restaurant also has lunch reservations for just $38, but be sure to book on Resy in advance.

This is a difficult one. This is a good omakase FOR THE PRICE, but it is not a good omakase compared to others with higher prices. The premium pieces were very good, the other pieces were ok and some chewy and fishy. The ceviche app was fishy, didnt like it. Id rather spend more and get a full premium omakase, not just 3 premium pieces.

Budget omakase if you get the basic omakase which is $35 or lunch special which is $38; no tipping establishment.

It’s definitely lower quality than more expensive omakase, but also so cheap! I mostly enjoyed our experience and for the price, I’d definitely come back! If you’re going to get $30-40 sushi somewhere, you might as well go to Sushi W and get omakase.

The fish is decently fresh, but they use a lot of soy sauce to season the rice and fish.

10/10 would definitely recommend!
This place is more affordable than other omakase spots and the quality is pretty good. We got the premium omakase—15 pieces for $68 which includes 2 pieces of chutoro (fatty tuna) that the basic set does not include.
The service was great and everyone was attentive. The tables are near the entrance and the counter is in the back of the store—I always prefer and recommend the counter for omakase just so you can see the chef making each piece and it feels more intimate. It wasn’t super luxurious inside but the taste and quality of the fish made up for it.

Alrighty, time to come back down to reality from the 4.9 rating Im witnessing here and review for real, and not like the half reviews that are friends/family/paid whatever.

I came on 1/17/24 for lunch.
Lets start with the ambiance of the place.... well, what ambiance? there is none. no warmth, no sexy, well not much of anything really, its missing clinical lighting and it would be a straight up hospital room. Barry White spotify soundtrack was a nice touch.

Lets get to the sushi.. With our regular set menu (nothing extra) there was no otoro, chutoro, the regular maguro wasnt fresh enough for an omakase, the yellowtail same, and same for hotate, the slicing was thin, to save money obviously..i had to ask for more rice in the nigiri 3 times, the request went unfulfilled, the point of this exercise was to not give you enough so you order extra nigiri at normal prices at the end. ok didnt fall for that.
The little sushi wraps? what is that? atleast do a handroll normally like a normal omakase.

If youre a sushi connoisseur, dont be fooled by this, im not hating, just the level is not there.

Amazing Omakase and amazing value. Note: if you're looking for a slower paced omakase where they explain each fish, this is not the place. You want 15+ pieces of quality fish over the course of an hour? You're in the right spot. All of the rice and fish are extremely high quality and they control the wasabi to your preference.

The free flowing tea is amazing. I enjoyed the light edamame as an appetizer.

All the fish is quality, I could spend entire paragraphs writing about each individual fish but I'll highlight a few. The chutoro with sea salt gives an excellent buttery taste to fish and paits well with the rice. The sable was an unexpected favorite as I've never had it and really enjoyed the rich umami flavor. I we got lucky with some yellowtail as our fish of the day. Eel, as always, was my favorite.

The manager/owner gives a nice intro and you feel the passion in the restaurant. Already reserved my return.

We love doing omakases around the city. Shocked to see this receive such high ratings given the competition. Fish was fresh but lacked flavor. Rice overcooked. Sake options limited. Owner seemed nice and interested in our having a good time. Would not return.

What a hidden gem of a restaurant. I don't want to take away from the experience - so, please go. For the price, the quality of fish is incredible. A geniuenly interesting experience. You get to sit for one hour though - so plan accordingly. Schedule, go there half an hour early, have some drinks at the waiting area, then an hour of fine sushi dining, then another half an hour to finish the second bottle of sake.

Tip: perfect for second dates.

Food was excellent but be prepared to be rushed out the door. They turn the seats five minutes to the hour so we had exactly 50 minutes to finish our omakase and too bad if you’re not done, it’s time to go!!

this place is so tasty. you can order appetizers and drinks while you wait, if you arrive early. the menu/pace/price combo are going to be hard to find elsewhere in nyc. The owners are extremely hospitable and always make you feel like you’re at home. definitely recommend the premium omakase. Check out the UWS location too!

Visited on a Monday night, was a great experience. Kudos to the staff and owner!

Sushi was all amazing, and some of the best textures and flavor I've had in NYC. Chef Alejandro was very skillful and our server Bernard was super nice and friendly!

Our favorites were the Chutoro tuna and the torched Gindara! The salmon roe bit was also a neat experience. Overall very nice flavors with big focus on the quality fish, with slight added notes of the toppings and sauce. Not over the top – humble but great.

The fish was not the highest quality and the experience felt very rushed. Even at the low price point for an omakase experience it felt too expensive given the quality and freshness of the fish.

Good starter "omakase" experience for those who haven't tried it. For $74 tax + tip included, you'll get 17 pieces of tastiness. This is not your typical sushi A and sushi B take out quality nigiri. You'll be paying for the experience of sitting 45 minutes on the counter and each piece being prepared for you. More expensive places you sit longer because of the extra knife work, here each fish is already pre sliced. This is how they keep the prices low, higher turnover due to faster pacing. I'm nitpicking here by saying that I wish that there was a bit more rice for each piece and that they get rid of the rice cookers that seems out of place on the counters. Use a wooden rice bowl for authenticity.

It is totally beyond my expectations! A reasonable price for an omakase meal of this high quality! Every sushi is bravo! The only point to take off is its environment. The walls are all grey and dark as if it’s barely furnished. But leaving this aside, it’s worth going and I’ll definitely want to go again.

The experience is very casual. A little out of place feeling for the location and where the food was being served. Nigiri was good quality considering the price and the availability; they also give good "surprise" factor by getting different seasonal fish in their course. I found the overall experience very good.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sushi W UES, (I used to be a big fan of original Sushi W in upper west side), and I must say it exceeded my expectations in every way. The first thing that caught my attention was the affordable price for the quality of food they serve. The sushi was good, beautifully presented, and an absolute delight for my taste buds.

What truly stood out, though, was the exceptional service provided by the owner. He created a warm and friendly atmosphere that made the entire dining experience even more enjoyable. His passion for sushi and dedication to ensuring every guest had a great time was evident throughout the meal.

Sushi Omakase is a hidden gem that offers incredible value for the quality of sushi you receive. I can't recommend it enough, not just for the delicious food but also for the wonderful vibes the owner brings to the table. It's a must-visit for sushi enthusiasts looking for a memorable and affordable dining experience.

The newly-opened Sushi W brings an affordable omakase experience to the UES. Prices are extremely reasonable - just $53 for a 14-piece dinner omakase, and $68 for premium (which includes two extra pieces of chu-toro and a piece of short rib). The fish was fresh and excellent quality. Service was friendly and attentive. Each seating is an hour long and you'll be in and out exactly in an hour. This means that the nigiri pieces come in quick succession, so if you're looking to enjoy a 3-hour long leisurely omakase, this might not be the place for you. However, you really can't beat the price and quality offered by Sushi W, making it a great place for a meal that feels like a treat, yet won't break the bank.

Terrific addition to the neighborhood. The omakase is very fairly and accessibly priced, the quality and preparation of the fish and other ingredients is high, and the staff could not be nicer. The $53 Basic Omakase was a perfect amount of food, and the restaurant runs like clockwork. It’s a great concept that works even better than I thought it would.. I’m glad I live only a few blocks away!

It's not these guys' first rodeo. After success at the original location, this second outpost provides a chance for more people to access this amazing experience. It's almost like clockwork as the chef churns out almost 20 pieces of sushi in less than an hour. Everything is already set up, with sliced fish neatly organized, and several marinated pieces taken out at the right time to serve. The nigiri are served with a variety of garnishes, some even flame torched. And the flavoring is bold, while not overpowering the fresh taste of the fish. At this very reasonable price point you can't expect rare and pricey types of fish, but what they do serve is fresh and well prepared. Also, I would say the renovation job was good and the place looks higher end than its competitors in this "good deal omakase" space.

Just went to Japan in February, and this is one of the best Omakase experiences stateside you can have, especially for the price. The staff is super accommodating and the fish is fresh with unique flavors as well as the rice. The atmosphere is relaxed but quaint, and help guide you through the experience where you comfortable, especially for those that are new to the Omakase experience. It was a great place to take people that have never been and would recommend this place to anyone that visits. They have two locations and the whole experience took about an hour.

For the price that they are offering, what you get is beyond the value. Probably one of the best sushi spots I had in the city.

The service is also top-notch and if not, perhaps the best in the city. It was raining outside and the lady in front offered to even give me an umbrella. This place really defines top hospitality well.

Service is immaculate. Great attentive waitstaff, perfect especially given that it wasnt busy when my friend and I went.

Food is wonderful and diverse, you have your traditional rolls and some more interesting ones blended throughout the omakase. If you want the lunch omakase just note that it does not come with fatty tuna rolls but you can order it a la carte.

Atnosphere is wonderful as well, dimly lit seating area on the outside with better lighting on the center focal point which is where the sushi chef resides. You can see everything hes doing and he hands you every roll as is tradition. A gentleman also tells you what youre eating but in a very subtle and non intrusive manner.

Recommend you check it out at least once if youre in the neighborhood and feeling sushi.
