Compact counter for high-end, seasonal edomae sushi, served omakase in a wood-lined space
Amazing attention to detail, the taste of the food was on point and meshed very well from one dish to the next. The atmosphere was perfect for a special night out like a birthday or celebratory event. The Itamae was kind and personable, the wait staff was attentive... The price is high, but it does include gratuity just like in Japan 🗾. If you thought about Masa, I'd try this place first!

If I were able to give this sushiya 6 stars, I would. I went there on a Saturday night so it was not the famous Chef Noz. However, that didn't really affect the entire experience. Upon entering the dining area, the ambience was warm and welcoming. It was a very neat 8-seat setting. In front of you, on the table, was a welcome letter with your name on it. The server was very attentive as well as the sommelier. The sommelier clearly explained the menu and I ended up with Kirinzan Junmai Daiginjou. After I finished the first glass, I was thinking about trying a different one. The sommelier was kind enough to let me try before pouring the entire glass and I indeed didn't like it. So I just ordered the same sake. I really appreciate how the sommelier cared for each detail.
After choosing the drinks, now let's focus on the food. The Chef that day was Yudai Shibata. He was very friendly and professional (of course for a two-stat Michelin restaurant) and would answer any questions. The omakase started with the juicy oyster. It was a very refreshing appetizer and I'm glad that it also went well with the sake. The journey continued with Hokkaido uni and flounder sashimi. No special dressing so everything you tasted was from their most original flavor. This was another thing I love about this restaurant: nothing too fancy but the ingredient itself. Then there was the bonito. The skin was crisply fried but the fish was still raw. The different textures exploded in your mouth along with the nori. The next one was a show. You can see the sous chef squeezing the noodles into the boiled water. The noodles were not soba or anything traditional. Rather, they were made from fish so there was an extra layer of umami. The noodles blended well with the soup and fish. The last dish before entering the main sushi session was fried silver flounder. It was fried crisply and with the caviar on it, the taste was complex but simple at the same time. It was complex because you have the hot fried fish and cold caviar and sauce. The crispy outer skin, the soft meat, the tiny bites of caviar, all together formed an enjoyable dish. It was simple because it's just tasty.
Now it came to the protagonist (or I should say protagonists). All kans of sushis were made simple: seafood, wasabi, shoyu, and shyari (vinegar sushi rice). With the combination, you can clearly tell the difference between each fish. The sushi started with some light ones such as kinmedai and shrimps. Then you know the climax is coming when you see the tuna family: from akami to chutoro to the exquisite ootoro. When picking up the sushi, you can still feel the warmth left from the chef's hands, which I think is the main difference between those sushi that were pre-made. Each kan was made in perfect shape. After the ootoro was different styles of sushi, such as uni gunkan and anago temaki. Finally the sushi dishes ended up with tamago and miso soup.
The desserts were also well designed. The first one was corn ice cream, which I have never tasted before. It tastes like iced corn chowder. And the final one was my favorite: the Hokkaido Yubari melon. So sweet yet so easy to consume. Although you would already expect good food from a two star, the actual presentation still exceeded my expectations. Probably that's why this sushiya deserves two stars. Before leaving I also had a pleasant small chat with Chef Shibata. I'm certain that I would visit Sushi Noz again and don't be disappointed if the Chef is not Chef Noz.

Omakase at its finest! I was fortunate to be in Chef Noz’s seating. What a treat it was! From the moment you step in, to the last bite of your meal, everything was meticulously planned and executed. No detail, down to the sauce or the last grain of rice was overlooked. Even the staffs were in kimonos. It truly was an amazing experience!

Sushi Noz on the Upper East Side is a great place for high-quality omakase or à la carte dining.
• It is a relatively new restaurant with a very simple interior design.
• The staff is friendly and attentive.
• The light jazz music creates a pleasant atmosphere.
• We really enjoyed the dishes prepared by the chef. They recommend ingredients and explain what goes into each dish.

The fish quality was great. But I couldn't get over how dirty the chef's hands/fingernails were. It made me slightly concerned about food safety and detracted from the whole experience because I couldn't watch the preparation. The pacing was also quite fast and we felt too rushed towards the end when we ordered extras. This isn't the most expensive omakase but there's definitely better out there at this price point.

Nigiris were good and the sushi rice was fantastic. I even asked for the method to see if I can reproduce and got recommendation for a rice cooker.

As half-Japanese myself, I’ve always been very particular and picky about my sushi. So when I visited this Michelin two-star omakase place, I was shocked by how subpar some of the fish served here was.
Not surprised we got very sick the next day. To think we paid 1k+ for a sick day in bed/bathroom. Never again.

DISCLAIMER: This review is based on my visit many years ago, so it serves more for my own memo sakes, but may not be very informative for others, especially with presumably out-of-date price info below.
-------------------------------
I tried Ash room many years ago where one Omakase per person is around $190, charged as soon as you book your reservation. Tax included, there is no seperate tip amount required, additional drinks (incl teas) are up to you as seperate charge when you are there.
Sushi qualtiy was good. I put much more focus on rice than fish/seafood when having sushi. And I was very happy with their rice quality, although this does not mean anything that their fish/seafood was mediocre. It was overall very delicious except like two sushi pieces which I think the chef put too much soy sauce on it and I felt those two sushi specifically tasted too strong.
One thing I want to note that this place is very classy place. This place looked very well organized and had put very strong emphasis to make it look authentic Japanese way. Even waitress came out wearing Kimono (Japanese traditional clothes) and served the customers. I would never want to visit this place with just casual shirts and shorts. Not that you have to wear formal, but just probably not the best place to be too casual for your own sakes. I'm not a super fan of such classy ambience and price point of this place is somewhat higher than other good sushi omakase places. So, although I enjoyed my one time visit here, I may not consider coming back again.

Sushi Noz on the Upper East Side offers an unparalleled dining experience, celebrated for its exquisite omakase menu crafted by the skilled Itamae, Nozomu Abe. The serene atmosphere transforms your meal into a journey through Japan, with each piece of sushi showcasing the highest quality ingredients. The meticulous attention to detail and artistry in presentation elevate every bite, making it a must-visit for sushi enthusiasts. Although it comes at a premium price, the unforgettable experience and exceptional service justify the investment, placing Sushi Noz among the elite sushi destinations in New York City.

Sushi Noz provided me with an unparalleled dining experience with exceptional service and exquisite food. The 8-seat Hinoki counter offered transparency, allowing guests to observe Chef Noz prepare fresh ingredients, including a standout rock oyster from Hokkaido. The meal featured 5 otsumami courses and an impressive sushi segment, showcasing expertly crafted nigiri and unique flavors, especially the bluefin tuna and uni. The ambiance is quaint, focusing attention on the chef, while the service is attentive and well-paced. Overall, a memorable and elegant sushi experience.

After I think 6 or 7 times at sushi Noz, this was my last for sure , prices of the menu have been rising like crazy and the food now is average to a good omakase , not worthed by the money .
With all the sushi omakase restaurants now in NYC is sad that NOZ decided to go for the money and not for the best sushi experience in town as it once was .

While Noz presents an impressive omakase sushi experience, the lofty price fails to justify the overall value. The flavors and craftsmanship shine, but for those seeking a better bang for their buck you will find alternatives with better cost to quality ratio. Sushi Jin nearby is exceptional for the best cost to quality ratio.

I’ve been wanting to come here for a few years and finally had the opportunity recently. Chef Noz himself handled our seating and the meal was incredible. I liked the mix of creative, small plates followed by plenty of traditional sushi. The staff were attentive and kind, and the experience was well worth it. Can’t wait to come back again and also try the other sister restaurants!

I noticed Sushi Noz got 2 Michelin stars last year, this reminds me of my last experience a few years ago. A famous Michelin 3 star sushi chef in Japan told me that his friend opened a sushi restaurant in nyc, he suggested me to give it a try. Overall food was good, but my experience was not that great. The day I went was rainy, I forgot/left my umbrella at the restaurant after the meal, the second day I emailed the restaurant to see if they can find my umbrella, they emailed me back said they found it and I can pick it up whenever I have a chance. Unfortunately I had a trip to Europe the day after, so I didn’t have a chance to pickup my umbrella until 3-4 weeks later, when I got to the restaurant, they couldn’t find the umbrella and they told me they throw away the umbrella already. I was very shocked and angry, the thing I don’t like here is I already communicated with the restaurant previously about the umbrella, if you can’t hold my umbrella for more than X days, you should communicate with me, I can make a decision to throw away my umbrella or ask my friend to pick it up, but no one told me this and the restaurant just threw away MY umbrella without even asking me. I don’t feel the restaurant respect me as a customer, and the restaurant is very irresponsible. So I never eat there after this. There are many good sushi restaurants in nyc, and Sushi Noz is not irreplaceable. Sushi Noz definitely deserves one Michelin star in my opinion, but “2 stars” is overrated.

I've been coming here since they opened and at least once a year for special occasions. Unfortunately the quality seems to have significantly declined.
Got the omakase. The tuna didn't taste fresh. Maybe my palate was off? There were 2 bones in the salmon. That's unacceptable.
The house soy sauce and wasabi were nice.

I will say this place was recommended by a big time foody person and she was pretty right about the food. But the ambiance is not good at all. The chef that was assigned to us had zero personality. He told us what type of fish he was making on a sushi and that’s it. No fun! The fish was different and definitely not what is served at a typical sushi restaurant. You can tell they use 1st quality rare fish and that was amazing. BUT beware of the sea orchard. Did not taste very good. AND scored very low on the desert. Which was basically an Omelette with some sugar on top. Definitely not worth the $381 we spent for 2 people with zero drinks. Oh and lastly - BEWARE of the wasabi. It is pretty cool, they grate it in front of you but boy is it strong.

First off I thought this place was a 2 star Michelin for the level of attentiveness and variety/quality of food we had. I loved the personalized card that we got and the little phone pad. Everything was just SO thoughtful, and that thoughtfulness (predicting the needs of myself before I even know it) is what truly makes a place a 2 vs 1 star. I hope they get a 2 star soon!
Overall I do believe that the cooked dishes here are better than the raw. The crispy unagi was some of the best I’ve had, but the sushi I’ve had better elsewhere (except for the horse mackerel — that was amazing).
The chef was wonderfully friendly and great at taking the time to explain each dish. The other staff not so much in terms of banter. Of all the Omakase I’ve been to this is probably the most formal feeling one with a distinct feel of everyone trying to be on their “best behavior” for their guests.

Charging full price over 1500 dollars equivalent to japanese 20, 0000yen demanded full payment upon reservation. I mean before even arriving to the restraunt???
What happens if you cannot make it to the restraunt for emergency reason. Already paid over 1500 dollars without food drink or services... ethically questionable practice.

We are big sushi fans and have been to almost every top omakase restaurant in the city from Masa to Yasuda to Ginza Onadera, so this restaurant has been on our list to check out and we were excited to get a reservation to celebrate a birthday. Unfortunately, we can't recommend this restaurant to anyone...at this price point, it just doesn't provide the fantastic service and experience that you would get at other omakase establishments of this caliber. In fact, it ruined the birthday celebration. I'll explain why.
We arrived early and paid extra for the Chef Noz experience, but were seated in a corner with barely any view of the chef's station. The station is set up at one end of the sushi bar and not in the middle. When everyone’s paying a premium for this room, the experience should be equivalent for all parties.
The chef barely looked our way (or at most guests) the entire night and did not explain much about the fish he was serving when he dropped the pieces next to us. Instead he interacted only with the 2 Japanese guests he sat in front of himself in Japanese and at the end only offered them two additional dishes off the menu, in Japanese. Besides the fact that this is rude, this was the only omakase experience that costs upwards of $1500 with drinks for 2 where we left hungry and had to eat at home. So offering additional dishes would have been helpful due to that alone (though at this price point, customers should leave full).
When we brought this up to the chef in person, nothing was offered besides an opportunity to come back to spend another $1500 in the hopes that it would be a better experience. No, thank you. We followed up with an email which was ignored.
The following month, we happily took our hard-earned money to Yoshino on Bowery and enjoyed it tremendously. If you want an experience with a seasoned mature chef from Japan who understands that the experience and service are half of the value for omakase at this price point, I recommend you take your money there.

Food 10/10
With a fine dining experience like this, I have decided to minimize the damage it has done to my wallet and focus on the meal itself because it truly was an amazing experience. From seeing Chef Noz on YouTube to experiencing his omakase in person, I had a beautiful time tasting every piece. Each piece definitely has an emphasis on the freshness of the seafood as well as the uniqueness of the selection. The seasoning was quite light, but because it was not the priority, it was exactly as I preferred. The uni was genuinely the sweetest I have ever tasted in my life, and the sardines were quite a surprise. Each nigiri was beautifully sliced, so delicate and intricate. Chutoro and bonito were two that also stood out to me, and despite there being so many different dishes, each was extremely memorable and added a beautiful touch to the entire menu.
Atmosphere 10/10
A very clean and cozy space on the UES. Very minimalistic yet elegant, the seating area only has eight seats, so it was a very intimate dining experience. Light wood detailing and bamboo. Perfect lighting, not too bright and harsh, the perfect warm tones.
I’m a huge fan of Japanese toilets, so that was a huge plus.
Service 10/10

Dined here for my boyfriend’s birthday celebration. Everything from email correspondence, arrival and seating and especially the service in between courses and the drink pairings were impeccable.
The service was literally more than I had ever experienced. The waitresses were very intuitive and prompt!
Loved sitting at the bar witnessing Chef Noz in action and then being able to enjoy the fruit of his creation. The boyfriend and I had a great time. The dinner had a welcome and a thank you card along with a small thank you gift. Very very detail oriented and thoughtful.
Note: the drink pairings do come with every course so you’ll be looking at about 8-10 drinks of full glasses/cups/shot. Do not try to finish everything or you’ll end up quite intoxicated like we did.. still don’t regret though! The next time I would have one person do the pairing and share it with the other partner.
Overall, a beautiful zen-like dining experience with top notch service and very thoughtful touches to a special dining experience!

Went to the Ash room a while ago for a special occasion. The whole experience was really phenomenal - There was much attention on careful choice of ingredients and preparation of food, and a respect for the combination of ingredient flavors without relying too much on sauce/condiment (which seems to be a common practice at a lot of U.S. restaurants). Although the Omakase is not cheap, the price point is actually not bad compared to some other high end Omakase restaurants in the city.

I love how everything is built that giving us a cozy and zen feeling when you walk in. The dining time is really quiet which I wanted to. The service and foods are excellent. I’d been here two time so far, first was before the pandemic, second was a month ago. So many thing have changed, and their menu is different now. I hope they could go back as how it is used to be.

Exceptional experience in an undeniably unique setting. Service was fantastic and the food was transcendent. The hand written note really made it a bespoke memory my wife and I will fondly look back on.

Excellent omakase - good fish with thorough explanation of what it is, its origin, and how it was prepared. Besides the quality of the fish, Chef Joji and Michael were fun to talk to and it was cool to see every step they took to prepare the plates. The waitress was super attentive, refilling water constantly and even notifying me when the restroom was unoccupied! I even got a handwritten card from the restaurant wishing me a happy birthday, adding a personal touch to this intimate omakase. Would love to be back for my birthday next year :)

The chef had an attitude that did not match to his skill level. He was ignorant, unprofessional, and discriminatory. The food was merely edible, like those Japanese food at Whole Foods.

Exceptional experience and meal. Worth every penny. This meal left us literally speechless and I still think about this meal over a year later. Having tried other top sushi omakase experiences in Manhattan, I can say that in my opinion Noz sets itself apart. I’m looking forward to going back to Noz again. There is some magic there.

Best omakase in NYC

highly overrated, highly overpriced.

Well. Interior’s beautiful.
Sushi - quite awesome. Especially their tuna was outstanding. However it fails to justify the price. There are many other cheaper options in the city with the same quality of nigiris.
Amount of food is absolutely pathetic. You’ll need another meal after this.
Chef/service - Bad. It can be so much better.
If you have extra $300+ to burn, and have a small portion, this is going to be a really good experience. Otherwise, it’s won’t provide you too much of pleasure.

Super intimate setting, very kind and knowledgeable staff, incredible chef. (And better than Masa). Highlights were the squid, white shrimp (15-20 small shrimp in one nigiri), and all of the tuna nigiris, which I think were about 4 total. Great experience and we will definitely be back! A great experience and definitely get your money's worth as far as omakase in NYC goes. I highly recommend!

We had an excellent experience at Sushi Noz. Chef Timothy in the Ash Room was lovely. It was such fun to watch him prepare the fish. Some of the best fish in the city.

Nigiri fish cut and quality is great. Sweet shrimp, toro and scallop were my favs. Traditional uncompromising to western crowd, no special sauce, torch top, Mayo or any weird add ons, which allows the original fish meat taste shine through. Great rice, aromatic fresh nori thats all! That shows how confident they are with their fish selection. We did outdoor market dining sushi set for $85/ person. With tax and tips together $220. Nicely designed intimate seating with curtains, heater and stereo. Good deal compares to $300+ / person inside. But still not cheap. Expected better appetizers than seaweed cucumber salad and plain miso soup. Service was attentive and in-disruptive.

You’re in the hands of a master here, someone you can fully entrust with your palette. Every detail — from the smooth finish on the Hinoki wood counter, to the presentation of a still very much alive King Crab, to the campfire aroma of fresh eel grilled over hot coals — is a memory that will stay with you long after the conclusion of this culinary adventure.

This is easily the best sushi I ever had. It's very expensive but worth every penny. They have 2 rooms, 1 with 6, one with 8 seats (Ash room) around the prepping station of the chef/sous-chef. Super nice interior and very classy. The service is excellent (and included - they don't accept tips). As there is no music etc, at the beginning everyone only whispers, but as the evening goes on, there was a nice atmosphere and conversation with everyone. Each course is served to everyone at the same time, each nigiri individually. Such amazing quality of the ingredients used, but also the preparation. Overall really a great experience.

Truly a wonderful dining experience that transcends any sushi or fine dining I have had before it. They noticed me being left handed immediately, and accommodated the chop sticks and finger towels upon the next serving. I couldn't recommend this experience more if you take sushi or food seriously.

Magical. Would highly recommend the drink pairing. Amazing experience...like watching a ballet, with just such delicious food.

We had omakase here at Noz and also at Nakazawa. Noz cost was nearly 2x and had less sushi ($250 for 15 pieces, Nakazawa $150 - 21 pieces). One chef for the 7pm sitting (6 pax). He seemed to be new... he was young and also somewhat shy... didn't say much, hardly went into detail on what he was serving us.
The fish was very fresh and presented in a very straightforward manner. Some other omakase places will be more innovative w/ the their sauce or pairing w/ various ingredients but both Noz and Nakazawa were not. This is neither good or bad... it's just their style.
Overall, we enjoyed having omakase here and had a very nice experience overall.
Though, next time we're in NYC, I will opt for Nakazawa, better value and experience overall.

Very elegant and elevated sushi experience in a tucked away 6 seat sushi-theater setting with friendly chef. Courses were very traditional (aka, Japan style) with a relaxed formalism. If you are looking for surprises in your sushi this is not your place—but if you are ready for the classic beats and a respite from noise and the city, this is a delightful oasis.

The love for this place is honestly hilarious.
It is decent. However the gushing reviews are laughable. First off, the reviews seem to come from many people who have never left the UES so their palates and mindsets are, let's say limited at best.
Secondly the price points are absolutely ridiculous. Truly at a point where the owners must be laughing at patrons' desperation.
Bottom line is, yep good sushi. But not even in the Top 10 for Manhattanites who know anything about the genre or its delicacy.

Really incredibly sushi. The variety of dishes and the intimate setting in the Ash Room made for an amazing birthday dinner.

Seated during our expected reservation time in the Ash Room. There were dividers to separate the groups, and apparently you are not allowed to book a single spot; you must come as a pair or more. Staff is incredibly accommodating and does everything possible to ensure an amazing and seamless omakase experience. Our chef, Joji, was great conversation but also very obviously skilled in preparing fish. We had a great time for our meal! Our favorite pieces were the spot prawn, uni rice with black throat sea perch, and the mackerel.

This might be the best sushi I've ever had.
Then again, it came with a BIG dose of attitude, at a price about 60-70% too high.
