There are no words for an experience like this. A Michelin-starred restaurant, this omakase experience was otherworldly. Every bite was delectable and everything pristinely prepared. The waitstaff were superb, knowledgeable, welcoming and kind and everything from the sake, our added items, and the seven-course, twenty-piece meal was perfection. I absolutely cannot wait to come again.

Great omakase for nyc. Traditional pieces and very fresh fish. Favorites were the otoro and uni. A bit pricey however.

Dining at Sushi Nakazawa is a fantastic experience and not too far from what you would get in Japan, a true homage to the art of sushi. Nestled in the heart of New York City, this Michelin-starred gem delivers a perfect balance of tradition, innovation, and culinary excellence.

From the moment you step inside, you are greeted with a minimalist yet elegant ambiance that sets the stage for what’s to come. Opting for the omakase experience at the sushi counter, I was treated to a symphony of flavors expertly orchestrated by Chef Nakazawa and his team. I was celebrating a Birthday.

Each piece of sushi was a masterpiece, crafted with precision and care. I started with the Sturgeon Caviar over rice to ready my palate. The toro (fatty tuna) was meltingly tender, a sublime mix of richness and umami. The uni (sea urchin) had a creamy, briny sweetness that transported me straight to the ocean. Standouts included the eel, which had a perfectly caramelized glaze, and the perfectly balanced tamago, showcasing the chef’s dedication to even the simplest elements.

The fish is impeccably fresh, sourced from the best markets globally, and every detail—from the rice’s temperature to the wasabi’s heat—felt meticulously calibrated. The pacing was flawless, allowing time to savor each bite while maintaining a steady rhythm to the meal.

The service was impeccable, striking the right balance of professionalism and warmth. The staff was highly knowledgeable, eager to answer questions and share insights about the menu and the chef’s techniques.

Sushi Nakazawa is more than a meal; it’s an intimate journey into the heart of Japanese culinary tradition. While it is undoubtedly a splurge, the experience justifies the cost for sushi enthusiasts or anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion in unparalleled style.

Prezzo decisamente eccessivo.

TLDR; I got severe food poisoning from nakazawa and customer service has been very unresponsive!

We had a very disappointing experience at nakazawa earlier this year. We went to nakazawa for dinner and needlessly to say the food and service were great. HOWEVER, about 3-4 hours after the meal, my friend (who dined with me) started having acid reflux. At about 4 am that night, I started having severe food poisoning symptoms and was extremely sick for the next week. It was THE WORST food poisoning experience I've ever had! This was the only substantial meal I had that day, so the food poisoning clearly came from nakazawa. We reached out through their website to report the incident, but never received a response. We also tried calling the restaurant for over a week, but no one ever picked up. The lack of customer service and disregard for our concerns only made this experience worse. Given the severity of the situation, I would have expected at least some follow-up or an apology, but sadly, that never came. As a Michelin-starred restaurant, I never would have expected such poor customer service and lack of accountability.

Overrated. Although the food was good, there wasn’t anything unique about it. The great majority of the sushi we experienced were items you can find in a standard neighborhood Omakase in NYC. On top of all this, the service and atmosphere were not even close to a Michelin star restaurant: the host was extremely loud in his long conversations with other guests and they forgot the birthday event I was celebrating, which was clearly stated in my reservation.

Sushi Experience №34

Sushi Nakazawa does not qualify for a 1 star. As someone who goes to Michelin and non-Michelin omakases regularly my experience felt at best like your average walk in omakase on multiple fronts:

1) Low value - if you’re a first time omakase goer this place is probably great for you since the fish is good and accessible especially for non-Asian pallets (e.g., lots of salmon to start off with). Only one piece was memorable: the Kuruma Ebi as it was cooked perfectly. We’ve had most of the fish before and can cite a number of places that have the same quality for less

2) Underwhelming service - the service at Nakazawa was in no way personal or thoughtful. No one offered to take our coats, there was no menu for us to follow along while eating, and every time a person checked in on us it was mostly transactional (I.e., asking if we wanted to order more food or alcohol). The birthday girl also did not receive any recognition during dinner from the staff.

3) Loud atmosphere- Without the chef holding up the standards of professionalism, I’d think we were at a local tavern. The host chatting loudly with the guests and the design of the restaurant with a large lounge at front echoed noise throughout

All in all, I would not come back as the food was about average and nothing about the atmosphere was enjoyable. Come here if you want the idea of an omakase without the rigor expected of a 1 star Japanese restaurant.

The service from the wait staff was excellent. The omakase course ensures that you will walk out of the restaurant with a full stomach. However, the positives end there.

When you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by a strong fishy smell (not in a good way). The omakase seats are packed so close to each other, it’s almost claustrophobic. The entire omakase course felt like a fast food chain experience. A few nigiris tasted special in terms of the sauces. For the most part, the nigiris were very average and not what you would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. To be fair, I have eaten at many omakase restaurants and have a relatively higher standard. Lastly, if you enjoy interactions with the chef, well, you can enjoy watching the chefs interact with one another lol.

Sushi Nakazawa was fantastic - from the attentive and seamless service to the melt-in-your-mouth quality of the sushi. I especially want to applaud the sommelier, Erin, for her perfect sake pairings. I cannot recommend that option enough - each glass complemented and brought out the flavors of each dish so brilliantly. The standout was the salmon roe and uni course, as well as the wagyu amuse bouche. But truly, everything was fantastic.

Sushi Experience №49

For $160 pre tip tax, a major let down. It is good value in the sense that there are 20 nigiri but I was full by the 7th one yet unsatisfied.

To start, the fish quality seemed low. Maybe it’s just me but I enjoyed maybe 4/20 pieces. Many of them were too chewy and I got a tendon or some muscle in my white fish making it the texture even worse. Some had a scent too fishy for me personally.

Second, while it is understandable that the fish already has the sauce chosen by the chef, every piece felt bland. It would have been significantly better with the usual vat of soy sauce next door.

Third, there was too much rice to fish in the ratio. There were a few pieces like the crab where I tasted nothing but the rice.

I’ve enjoyed omakase far more at a far lower price point. Or honestly, even buying your own fish from osakana would be better value.

I will say, the ceramics used were all great. Seemed to be where the budget went.

We had the lunch omakase and every bite was fresh and delicious. I loved the simplicity of each piece and the careful attention to details. We added on the fatty tuna with white truffle and ordered up a bottle of Soto Sake which complemented the sushi perfectly. The service was also incredible and the meal was well paced. I’ve eaten at Masa and other establishments that are double this price, but I preferred this omakase above those.

Went for my mother’s 60th birthday. One server- the only old female Asian server with a bob, was very unprofessional, to the point where my mother and I could not even appreciate the other servers or food. We were the first ones in the empty restaurant, and asked to be seated with a nice view of the restaurant so we could appreciate the ambience. Even with the place empty, the server refused to reseat us. Her kind coworker obliged. Then, we tried to get her attention to order, which took ages despite us being THE ONLY customers. I saw her hiding behind a curtain appearing to make some mocking comments. No idea why this behavior was called for. Whilst eating, my mother and I asked for some soy sauce to taste the difference with/without. This is a request that doesn’t hurt anyone- and from a server’s point of view if a customer wants a sauce and they are paying $600+, you get the damn sauce. Why was she almost groaning at the request in front of our face, and getting one tiny dish for BOTH of us to share? Is this a McDonald’s? This server was truly an oddity in an otherwise nice restaurant with great food and service. And on a special night too.

Sometimes i would go to the ones that are relatively affordable but would end up having not a good experience- pretty much disappointed at the end of the day. I'd just rather go to a real decent authentic one then going to two affordable places. every piece was so fresh, palatable and delicious. I am not a big fan of tuna but their tuna was amazing! Are the ratings bots?! Came here twice, worst sushi ever, I was hoping this time it would be different. BLAND! rice not properly seasoned and hard, a stingy fish portion(paper thin!), big bulb of bland rice. Come on, for this price you can put a little more, I can't even taste the fish

I'm a sushi snob and have been to many of the top sushi spots in NYC and across the world. I was seriously doubting myself when I saw these high ratings. Do they not know what a proper good sushi tastes like?
The first visit I thought maybe it was because of the chef, The second visit confirmed my thought, it’s just terrible sushi.

Yuki was the perfect guide for what was a spiritual sushi experience if I’m being honest. Every piece of food that was served was paired with the most complimentary sake. Each pairing and bite was not only about the flavor, but also the information about the what, how, and why of each experience. I’m still processing what happened. Food as expected is fine and well prepared.
The variety of fish and the combinarion of tastes is well served and with very deep
and balanced tastes in most of the dishes, not in all of the dishes...The concept is generally nice and intimate, but overall it is extremely overpriced, this all concept of 20 dishes with a dedicated chef that is preceivrd to be high-end, in my personal view andntaste is exaggerated and overrated, this is defintely individually subjective.

This is omakase on steroid. 4 chefs simultaneously preparing food at the counter. Loads of sushi and very fresh ingredients. A total of 3+20 courses. The wine/sake list was also very expansive and expensive. Service was courteous and to the point. Our executive chef Shawn Li was very professional and with a sense of humor. The only thing was that the whole 2hr (5-7pm) dinning experience felt a bit rushed.

Best omakase ever!

FOOD: chef got really creative about the sauce, spice, everything makes the sushi become so special, so unique.

The fish are very high quality, I hate mackerel but I just had the best mackerel sushi in my life!

Love the the rice portion are not big so they didn't fill me up half way through the meal.

The tamago was the highlight of the meal, it was super super good, fluffy, melting soft, rich and creamy flavor.

SERVICE: is the best. I feel like I didn't need to worry about anything at all but just focus on enjoying the food and the chef performance. Chef was explaining every detail and communicating well with everyone.

VIBE: small place with a hidden entrance that no one knows how to get in. The vibe is too formal and too quiet that people were whispering to each other. And it feels quite awkward in there.

I received discriminative threats from a male host in private setting from this restaurant. Surprising experience.

One day, my group by 3 went to the shop, discovered that I made a mistake that I only reserved for 2.

I asked: “can we add a 3rd seat to a 2 person table?”
The host rejected.
I asked “there seems to be enough space for a 3rd seat”
The host rejected again.
I asked “why not?”

Then, the unthinkable things happened.
The host said “may I have a word with you out side of the shop?”

I walked out and the host said the following out side of the shop with no one else hearing“I told you we can’t add 3rd seats twice and you have been very difficult in past 5 mins. You disrespected me. You are not welcomed here. Please don’t reserve again. If I saw your reservation again, it will not be accepted and you deposit will not be returned. Now this is a private space, if you don’t leave, I will call the cop.” So I left with my group.

I was shocked. I understand it was my mistake to made a wrong reservation. However, I merely asked 3 questions to explore the possibilities. And the male host already launching aggressively
1. Made threats on calling the police
2.tell me not to come again
3.threaten to confiscate deposit if I reserve again

Is this over reacting? I don’t understand why my 3 explorative question could trigger this, unless my party has been judged on who we are and how we look. I didn’t talked about anything else except the seats and reservations. And the host’s patience and politeness does not go beyond 5 mins. And is it even legal for restaurant to take deposit while reject reservations? Worse part is the aggressive conversation happened in private with no witnesses

I hope our host is just having a bad day and he normally don’t talk like that.

My daughter took me here a few days before mother's Day. It was a wonderful experience. The service was the best. Think I've ever experienced, friendly unobtrusive and informative. The omasaki was mind-blowingly good. Definitely a night and meal. I will remember. We had a great time.

Such great quality for an affordable omakase tasting menu. The sake tasting menu was a great addition as well. Hands down my favorite omakase in the city.

Food is not bad but this is a Michelin restaurant? Mrahahaha, Had way better sushi elsewhere. They are more forgiving for solo diners but a solo diner still cannot get a seat at the sushi counter. The reasoning is obvious like other places with same rule, they are greedy losers who only care about money. And what is with the uptight dress code? I wore sneakers, hoodie, and baseball cap to 3 Michelin starred Masa, Michelin starred Noz, and Michelin starred Ichimura and have no issues whatsoever. Having been to all the best Omakases in NYC, only this Omakase and another one in Chinatown have this lame dress code. Sucks when you can’t even enjoy a meal wearing clothes of your choosing but don’t mind me, I just wanna be free living in a free country.

Service was impeccable. Omakase was great, albeit some of the pieces the rice was a bit over vinegary which overpowered the fish. Pace of dishes was fast. Tamago was a great end to the Omakase. Would say good for money and experience overall.

Service was great. Everyone was very proffesional, but the sushi was very disappointing. We’ve had much better sushi at a significantly lower price. It’s mandatory to do the Omakase, and honestly if it wasn’t I would’ve stopped ordering after the first few pieces. Service at a restaurant is certainly important, but if your food does stand out what does it even matter. If you are visiting New York like we were look elsewhere because your hometown sushi spot likely will rival the quality served here.

Lives up to the hype! Authentic omakase sushi, meticulously crafted and served in an atmosphere that brings traditional Japanese cuisone into a chic, modern, NYC setting.

Obviously VERY expensive, so this is very much a "special occasion" spot...but if it is one of those occasions, you'll have a very memorable experience at Sushi Nakazawa. Each piece of nigiri practically melts in your mouth, and the chefs that present it to you have honed their craft for decades.

Definitely sit at either the lounge or sushi counters. We were at the lounge counter, and the only difference between it and the sushi counter is it's slightly less private since there's less separation between it and the waiting area...but it still was very much a "private" experience, so don't get hung up if you are here instead of the "sushi counter." In fact, since there's just one chef behind the lounge counter, and seemingly only room for 5 patrons here, it actually might be a more intimate experience at the "lounge counter"; don't let the proximity to the "lounge" disappoint you. It would be a waste to not be at one of the counters though, so make sure you can reserve a spot at one of them.

Decent food, but for the price I think it's fair to expect much more.

Sake pairing was really un-impressive. Each bottle seemed to be picked for novelty not for taste or matching the course.

Also the chu toro and otoro were questionable.

The quality and freshness of the fish was amazing. The chef is a master and the experience with him for lunch was almost mediative. This was a very no frills omakase experience, in terms of innovation or creativity or “vibes”. Just fresh good quality nigiri/ with options for uni/wagyu/caviar add ons. I did a sake pairing and the context/education/history that my server provided along with instructions regarding which bites to pair w/ was perfect and informative! Service was excellent and in sync and the chef timed things perfectly for everyone at the counter including giving us a heads up on starting our new pairing for a particular fish/waiting a moment or two for sake to be poured before serving. I knocked a star off bc the manager of the restaurant should get rid of counter chairs that require their staff to have to fully pull us out or tuck us in.. it’s too much work for them and just not great /though they did an amazing job.

I've been to the best sushi restaurants in the world and never was I denied soy sauce in my life. I put salt even on my pizza if I feel like it and this ruined the whole experience for me. Food was medium, sushi masa is a 3 Michelin star and they were more than happy to give me soy sauce when I requested it. I definitely understand to recommend the sushis without it, but to refuse it even after I explained that my taste was maybe overly salty was just unnecessary.

I had an incredible dinner at Sushi Nakazawa in NYC, despite a slightly awkward start – I arrived a bit late for the omakase, and the chef and staff kindly waited for me as each sushi piece is crafted simultaneously. This added an extra layer of appreciation to my experience.

The sushi was nothing short of phenomenal. Each piece was not only fresh but also artfully prepared, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The chef's meticulous attention to detail was evident in every bite, with flavors that were perfectly balanced and textures that complemented each other beautifully.

In addition to the omakase, we indulged in an extra box of uni. This turned out to be a fantastic decision. The uni was remarkably fresh, offering a rich and creamy flavor that just melted in the mouth. It's a rarity to find uni this good, making it a highlight of our meal.

Overall, Sushi Nakazawa delivered an exceptional dining experience. Despite the initial hiccup of my late arrival, the service remained impeccable, and the quality of the sushi was unparalleled. It's an absolute must-visit for any sushi lover in NYC.

Finally got to try one of the most renowned omakase sushi spot, @sushinakazawa, and it was delicious! Love these authentic restaurants that serve fresh and high quality ingredients, and no fancy decorations or toppings to distract.

For a better experience, I do wish they could be more proactive about cleaning the sushi board between pieces, and refilling the cups.

An average experience in the dining room. I would not recommend the dining room at all. It’s like the after though to the omakase counters unfortunately.

We were served 20 courses in 10 mins. It was rushed , not paced and I make better desserts at home.

We had an obnoxious table of 8 people in this room and they were way too loud. Large parties are not workable at this restaurant , it really disturbs everyone else. I wish it was more amazing.

Not the kind of birthday celebration I had in mind for my hubby.

Absolutely HORRIBLE. Both my partner and I got food poisoning and (despite it being my first night/food in DC, meaning there’s absolutely zero chance that there’s a coincidence I got food poisoning from somewhere in Europe and my partner did from somewhere else in DC), they were as obnoxious to say we didn’t get it from their restaurant but from elsewhere.

AVOID!!!!!!!!! Rude staff, contaminated food.

We dine in Michelin restaurants every week, and this place is definitely NOT worth being mentioned in the same sentence as the word “michelin”.

Worst restaurant experience in the past 10 years from me, coming from someone who eats out 3-5x/week.

Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere. Plenty of good alternative sushi places in DC.

The food is good but a bit overpriced to be honest. The omakase is only sushi then very end a dessert, for this price would be nice to have some dishes without the rice. Wasabi is recommended which is understandable but charging $10 for a tiny bit of fresh wasabi is still a bit shocking. The place is modern, doesn’t give the atmosphere of a Japanese eatery. There are many servers but a bit disorganized that they often bumped into each other. Overall nice place but don’t really feel that worthwhile for an average of $250 spending per person.

Be aware! This place has some nerve!
We visited there to celebrate the birth of our son, we got a gift card from our friends which we used to pay part of the bill and completed the rest with our card.
We added a nice gratuity of 20% (what we thought was 20%) but ended up paying DOUBLE what we had to pay since they just "assumed" we wanted to pay a 50% tip and charged our card for the entire amount AND the gift card.
We saw the charge only a few days later, it was impossible to get a hold of the place and when I finally did - they said they can do NOTHING with it since they already paid their employees. (????)
I would expect a fancy, $300 min per person place like Nakazawa, to be able to figure it out and compensate the mistake they did with their employees and not take it out of their customers pockets.
***Just make sure you check the bill 3 times before you leave***
We will NOT be returning.

Wow. Disappointing omakase for a 2 star Michelin after hearing very good things.
I’ve had significantly better nigiri at 1 star restaurants; try sushi yasuda instead.
Some of the highlights that were disappointing: mackerel and eel were both about the same as you would get from any random non-Michelin sushi place in Manhattan.
Also the sake pairing is a little ridiculous. Very small pours and they won’t refill unless you explicitly ask. (Another thing I haven’t had to deal with at 1-star restaurants)

Me and my partner spent Christmas holiday in NYC and had omakase here. This place is such a fun part of our vacation.

It is hiding in a small neighborhood and no restaurant sign outside. We walked back and forth along the street like scavengers hunting trying to guess which is door the right one. Two regular customers stopped us and pointed to a small black door.

Entered the door is a small waiting room surrounded by a sectional sofa. A sharply dressed host in dark suits standing behind a desk confirmed our reservation in a cool, stern expression. Next to him a warm young lady quickly came forward and collected our winter jackets and hats and put away to a cloakroom.

After the dinner I asked my partner - don’t you think the waiting room is fun, one is cold and one is warm?

She was like - don’t remember except tasting sushi.

The restaurant was awarded one-star michelin in 2019 so I expected something “wow” to me but there is nothing special compared to other omakase places I had tried. Can’t deny that the fish was super fresh but most of pieces were plain. They basically gave us rice, fish, and wasabi. There were barely sauce added to the bite. I paid $150 for 20 courses which is reasonable but I want more “wow” overall.

Omakese, $180 a person with some add-ons. Service pretty solid, conversation and banter with the chefs at the sushi counter is best; the lounge counter is ok, or a seat in the back. I didn't see Nakazawa here this time, he might e been away opening the California location coming up. The waygu ($20/pc) is a definite good add, and the special uni ($50/serving) is also worth it for uni lovers. The caviar was raved over by the neighbor but I didn't order it this time. top off with a great tea, wine and sake assortment. Reservations up to 14 days in advance.

I returned after a spectacularly amazing experience a few years ago. Beverage service was as excellent as I remembered, but sushi counter service was very poor. Our chef barely acknowledged us and didn’t even bother to tell us what some pieces were. The pace at which the food came out felt extremely rushed, too. With the wide variety of omakase options available in the city, I would recommend trying another place.

Review is for their lunch omakase only. Pricing is a little better for lunch compared to dinner. The skilled chefs present a carefully curated selection of sushi, highlighting the finest flavors and textures. Each dish is a testament to the restaurant's dedication to quality and culinary artistry, making it a standout destination for sushi enthusiasts seeking a refined dining experience.

This place was on my list for a while. I did the two week book right away method and got a Friday night spot at the counter after some Switches by “notify dinner” on resy. It felt semi-casual upscale. Enjoyed the food and the experience.

The five star experience was Shawn the Fujian Sushi chef who was super knowledgeable about each fish and fun to talk to. His energy made for a nice experience eating and enjoying while learning.

The food is reasonably priced. Drinks is where they get you. and the 3% credit card charge, fyi.

Service was fine. Missed two points - a food preference and a special occasion note.

Atmosphere was good, but could have been better for $900 dinner.

All in all, very good experience but missed a few key points to get 5 stars.

Lost its unique touch . . . We have been coming here for years but sadly will not return. Sushi Nakazawa lost its uniqueness. The production felt like an assembly line, with the sushi chef serving 8 of us at the same time. Pieces of sushi were pre cut, small, and under seasoned. He mumbled the name of the sushi incoherently beneath his mask, and lacked the personal touch that Nakazawa conveyed when he was at the counter. Sadly disappointing and depersonalized. In a world with so many newly emerging omakase choices with sushi proprietors who are keen to convey their passion, Sushi Nakazawa has degraded itself to an impersonal and mechanical production line. Even the way they treat special occasions - the same solitaire candle in a uniform dessert that is served identically to each party celebrating something special - was impersonal. Sad to see.
