The chef of this omakase restaurant has worked in the city’s sushi scene for nearly two decades, paying his dues as the sushi chef at Morimoto, executive chef at (the now-shuttered) Geisha, and, most recently, as executive sushi chef at O Ya. At Sushi Ishikawa, there are just 24 seats, with 12 primo slots at the counter and the rest at tables with two menus offered, And Pham is going beyond raw fish — what’s served will change consistently, but expect the likes of black abalone with mushroom soup, hairy crab, and octopus with green-tea salt. — Chris Crowley
I went there for a solo dinner on a Saturday. The server was really friendly and welcoming, made me feel accompanied, and did a great job on explaining the ingredients.
Unlike some other places I’ve tried, the chef was really creative with the sushi by mixing and matching different kinds of fish. He was also really generous with the caviar lol. The flavor was a little strong like others say however, but overall the food was impeccable. Their secret menu (the one with a quailed egg on top) is a must try!! Will definitely bring friends and family there next time!

The freshness and precise cuts of the sushi were commendable. However, the size of the sushi pieces was slightly smaller compared to the standard omakase portions. While some of the sushi offerings were well-received, there were instances where the combination of ingredients overpowered the delicate flavors of the fish. This resulted in a loss of the distinct taste that is expected from high-quality sushi. Despite this, the service provided was exceptional, with the staff demonstrating a thorough understanding of each dish and providing detailed explanations. The attentiveness and thoughtfulness of the servers further enhanced the overall dining experience.

I’ve been to over 15 omakases in NYC the last 2 years and this was probably my top 3 favorite omakases yet.
There was not a bad bite in the entire 17 course meal. Additionally, the trout was my absolute favorite nigiri bite I’ve had out of all the omakases I’ve been to.
Service was also impeccable, everyone was so kind and considerate. From the chef to the waiters, everyone was so funny and genuine and great. I was smiling the whole night.
10/10 sushi in terms of quality and quantity - I’ve never had an omakase with so many luxary bites. 10/10 service and 10/10 environment.

Sushi Ishikawa is a modern omakase experience on the UES.
We had made reservations the day before and were running late so called ahead. They were so kind and the sushi chef caught us up to the rest of the diners once we were seated.
We ordered two carafes of sake to pair with our sushi, both were good and refreshing.
There were many courses as expected but overall the fish was very fresh and each piece was unique. Each fish did have some sort of topping- so if you’re a purist you may not like the omakase here. It was fun for us to try these new presentations! Although some of them seemed like throwing expensive ingredients like uni, truffle, caviar, and even gold flakes to make the high price point. I’d say it’s worth it but again, if you’re more into traditional omakase than this place may be too fun for your taste!
Highlights were the Chawanmushi, toro, uni on toast, some fish I forget with a fried shiso leaf, and the matcha panna cotta for me. I also need to mention the ginger- it came in small cubes and was the perfect little bite.
We were celebrating that night and were also offered champagne at the end of the night.
Our service was EXCEPTIONAL and our experience was highly memorable. Our server and staff explained each piece in detail. Our server was so kind and engaging and we had some light conversation about some of the highlights which was really nice. Also the fact that they seated us late and were able to catch us up was very considerate. Some omakase places may leave out the ones you missed or not seat you if you’re late enough.
Overall, not sure I would come again for the food on my own but would bring a new friend if they were looking for a fun omakase experience.

Sushi Ishikawa dishes out an incredible omakase in a beautiful brick restaurant. Each step on the sushi journey took you to a different place. It’s tough to pick favorites because each course impresses in unique ways. From fatty toro, to wagyu, to a quail egg, the food will make you want to start again from the beginning. Service was excellent. Staff are super friendly and attentive. I’ve been to several omakase spots in the city, and this is by far the best one. I’m already thinking of an excuse to return!

Honest review after dining in Christmas Eve: Food was alright, nothing special. I found it to not match its price point, it was similar to the $100 range omakases. The slices of the fish were quite thin, so it felt like we weren’t getting much. Also, on the night that we went they didn’t let us use apply pay when clearly that is suppose to be an option on any other night. Definitely bring a physical card if want to secure those cash backs. Overall 6.5/10 given the fact that I didn’t feel like it matched its price point.

One of the better omakase spots I’ve been to for NYC. Caught a last minute reservation for last minute dinner plans with a friend. Arrived 20 minutes late due to the usual traffic and parking. The staff are friendly and courteous. We had the 17 course with some additional specials as well. I really enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere was great. It’s easy to have a conversation at the chef’s counter and great to watch them create the sushi. Our waitress, Emma, made sure to treat all of her guests with compassion and diligence. I would definitely come back again.

Fantastic omakase spot. Not overly crowded. Managed to get a last minute table. Server was charming and very nice. I was alone, and he made an effort to chat w me about the food. The dishes were fantastic, about 17 courses. About 50% nigiri, 25% sashimi, and 25% other (rolls, dessert, etc…) The best part is it was not expensive. $175 for the omakase, and $95 for the dassai 23 300ml, my favorite sake on the planet. I will absolutely return. ASAP!
Bad news is I forgot to take pics 😭😭

Bucket list restaurant. Truly another level and one of the rare Omakase experiences that actually lives up to it's name. Each course of exotic combinations was bursting in delectable tastes and textures that developed subtly and then exploded into a spectacular fusion of flavor. Everything was absolutely my favorite. The boutique restaurant experience and service was seamless from the masterpiece preparation of eclectic creations to the inviting and skillful tableside presentation and explanation of each course. It reminds us that obsessing over the small things in life can have the most impactful outcomes. And, having a fantastic sake with the dinner doesn't hurt.

Currently my favorite omakase in the city. I appreciated the creativity that was achieved in each piece through different textures and flavors. Sushi Ishikawa's creativity is what makes it stand out to me over other omakases.
The staff were very nice and attentive. They took the time to explain each piece when received and our party appreciated hearing about where the food was sourced (we asked about the food source so if you're interested be sure to ask). Noise volume was not too loud. We were a party of 4 seated at the bar and didn't have any problems hearing each other.

Had another fab time at this omakase joint. Chef Don Pham was at the helm again, and boy, does he know his stuff. It's like he's got a secret love affair with every fish he serves. The way he pairs everything up, you'd think he's a matchmaker for flavors! And yeah, they still play those 2000s hits, which kinda takes you back, doesn't it? Can't wait to swing by again for that extravagant, kinda non-traditional sushi magic they whip up.

My friends and I were celebrating my birthday at Sushi Ishikawa last weekend, and unfortunately I was quite disappointed with my experience. The quality of the sushi was lacking. The fish tasted stale and lacked freshness, which is a crucial aspect of any sushi restaurant. The presentation of each course was over-compensating, heavy toppings, mix flavors.
Furthermore, the service was rushing and inattentive. We didn't get our drinks until 30 minutes after we ordered. Our chef was professional, but seemed overwhelmed. We tried to ask for more details for each piece of sushi we had, but the staff seemed distracted and unresponsive to our questions. We didn't know what we were eating the half of the time.
My favorite course is the dessert...
The overall experience is 1.5 star. I wouldn't recommend here to others. The quality of the food and service here do not match its high price point.

Truly the best Omakase restaurant in NYC. 👏
I recommend sitting at the counter if possible- to get the “full” experience. Aside from how delicious the food was, a huge reason for our review was the service. Our waitress Emma was very knowledgeable and super personable, and recommended a Sake that paired perfectly with our meal. Her demeanor and conversation was so pleasant the entire evening.
Our favorite pieces were the Black Throat Sea Perch and Chutoro with Truffle, but every course was more tasty than the last.

First of all, while the owner is supposedly Japanese, no one in this location speaks Japanese. The dinner is served in specific seatings. We all eat at once, at the counter. The mindful serious service of high end traditional Japanese sushi is replaced with a hurried assembly line as the overwhelmed chef tries to serve six guests at once. Mindful respect for the fish? No. Clear explanation of the fish and flavors? No. Some of the sushi chefs have such strong accents, combined with their rushed attitude, that we were all looking at each other with bewilderment. They try to hard to make complex flavors that don’t actually match or blend well. Dungeness crab is delicious - so is Ootoro. But when you put that crab on fatty tuna and then pile on truffles or fish roe, the delicate flavors are lost. Instead, we get a “let’s impress the tourists and Americans”. No Japanese customers to be seen. Gold flakes? Truly trying hard to impress with expensive toppings. I much prefer high quality sushi served with purity and mindfulness. Never again.

BEST OMAKASE IN NYC! This is mine and my husband’s favorite omakase place. We love that it’s not traditional omakase and it’s more of a fun fusion!
Chef Dom is also such a joy to be around as well. He’s funny and very nice. When we go, he always makes sure to greet us or be seated where he will be. Which we really appreciate. We also love Charlie, the waiter. He’s so nice and fun to talk to!
It is expensive, but it’s definitely worth every penny! Especially, if you are celebrating a special occasion! The sushi is very fresh and each piece/dish is so flavorful! Literally obsessed to the point I got my favorite 5 as tattoos!
If you’re in the city visiting, this is a must go to spot especially if you’re an omakase lover!

One of THE best values for Omakase dining in the City! Don Pham takes a unique approach to his art by combining traditional sushi flavors & textures with the earthy richness of foie gras, shaved black truffles and seared wagyu. Each bite is a delectable explosion of taste. The wine & sake menu is not to be underestimated and perfectly matched to the incredible cuisine.
But, what really ties this all together is the vibe! While you may see folks dressed to the nines, you'll find as many - if not more - dressed casually. There is nothing stuffy or pretentious about this place! Sushi Ishikawa is all about a good time with friends, family & amazing food. Don and his incredible staff go out of their way to insure everyone has a memorable experience. It's one of the reasons why we keep coming back time after time.

The 17 course will fill you up, you will not go away hungry. Chef Don is a master at what he does, it’s just not dinner, it’s also watching a show as he prepares your sushi. Omakase here is modern and creative. I like most of them but some of fish is a bit chewy due to connective tissue in it which is kinda annoying though it is undoubtedly fresh. However, the table service is underwhelming. I feel being rushed by the waitress at the end. It seems she cannot wait for getting rid of us for the next group. She gave the check even before we started dessert. Even more, she came to check the bill again in 2 min whether we put credit cards, while we were in the middle of having the dessert and having our conversation. It is very disturbing. I don’t feel comfortable at all. I expect a better service by spending $200ish.

A unique gem. The magic of Sushi Ishikawa is in its creations. There is a keenness here to take the sum way beyond its parts. The chefs start with the finest quality ingredients and then they utilize their deep knowledge of food and cuisine to deliver us to a whole another level. They subtly add in a spice from Southeast Asia or a truffle from Italy, without losing the essence of Japanese cuisine. A 15 course Omakase is delivered by attentive easy going staff with each course complementing the last. Memorable among them include: a truffled ikura topped uni cracker, a chili dusted Kampachi. A miso lobster cavier that I still think about. And let's not forget that aged delicate blue fin toro with a slice of truffle on top - you don't chew. it melts. Its not cheap so think about it as that splurge you deserve. We visited the UES location, sat outside and it was very comfortable. Inside is a classic sushi bar, but you know the decor is not what you are there for. So there you have it. Fresh fish and seafood presented in brilliant complements and combinations. Creations that will blow your palette and your mind. Feast upon the presentation and then close your eyes and taste the delight. I have no more to say.

The Omakase was very good quality, as was the presentation. The worst place was the garden in front of the restaurants serving Omakase. Very cheap and poor quality furniture, every chair from a different fairy tale, artificial grass, totally do not match Omakase's style and prices. need to invest in quality or do something very minimalist. the photo from the outside shows a little bit of the atmosphere inside.

Some pieces were better than others. The sushi rice in the first few pieces were really disappointing, tasted like leftover rice. I seriously make much better rice at home. But the rice got better. Some pieces were great and the flavors were well balanced while others were overwhelmed by truffle or other garnish.

Food 9/10
Received complimentary champagne. I’ve gone before to the UWS side, and that was a spectacular innovative omakase experience before COVID. Coming to this place after COVID, maybe it didn’t feel as amazing because we were not seated at the chef’s counter and each piece was brought to our table. Nevertheless, I felt as if the pieces were smaller than I had recalled, and no flavor really stood out to me. Prices obviously went up but that is understandable. My friends really enjoyed it, but because I prefer edomae omakase, this place was a solid meal but not a place I would return to.
Atmosphere 6/10

I was very much looking forward to trying this spot for a while. A Bostonian's acclaimed fine sushi restaurant, O Ya, also had a New York branch but a few years back, it closed like many other New York restaurants, and the executive chef opened his own restaurant, Sushi Ishikawa, and carried on this brilliant fine dining style sushi.
Honestly speaking, it has some of the aged flavor, but not as fully aged. However, each garnish enhanced any missing flavor. Along with the garnish, each nigiri offered just as much enjoyment so I can't even say which is better at this point; aged flavor or nice garnish. I am pleasantly surprised by the dishes. For example, a salmon nigiri with sautéd tomato seems like a classic pairing in NYC sushi places, but they even added tricks on top of that. It was very generous with its caviar and uni too.
Also, their Chirashi don offered fine sashimi cuts similar to sashimi sets. My only criticism was that the rice stuck to the to-go container too much, so it was kinda hard not to waste rice grains. Besides that I just couldn't ask for more. My overall experience with Sushi Ishikawa was very satisfying and I definitely recommend it to others.

The priciest Omakase is worth every penny - high quality fish, premium ingredients, sitting on a bed of perfectly vinegared sauced and temperatured rice.
There are many places that cost more while giving less, and this is the opposite. Such a great deal and one of the best spots for sushi in the city.
Definitely ask for counter seating so you can watch the chefs do their magic.

I came here to celebrate end of my summer internship with my boyfriend. We ordered the full menu with the 13 courses + beef.
When we first came in, the place look quite small and noisy. My BF specially put on a nice and formal shirt and it's totally not necessary lol.
The sushi is really good. Ingredients are fresh and very rich. Each piece is quite carefully made and decorated. I think every table is taken care of by one chef from the beginning to the end. When the serve the sushi, they will explain what's in it and how to eat it. The sushis are placed in different plates that match the color.
Every course is very delicious. They are quite generous on the material and there are more than 10+ types of fish, plus truffle, sea urchin, lobster, caviar etc. There are definitely some courses we were really impressed!
The 20$ wagyu beef was great but I would not order it if we ever go again. It smell very nice but the taste was not as impressed as I thought.
The end dessert is free. And it's SO good. Milky and silky, macha-flavored. I was so full and didn't know I could still be enjoying it so much. My BF has a diary allergy so they gave him a nice plate of strawberries. Too bad he couldn't taste the yummy dessert!

We had our anniversary dinner there yesterday. There is no counter dining. Everything now is outdoor with tiny tables. It’s a challenge to deliver the pieces to so many tables in time when the sushi is freshly out. I think 7 out of the 15 pieces were really amazing. 3 came out stale. For the food alone I would give 3.5 stars.
I was disappointed in the service and dining experience. First off, the place was really noisy because of a long line for walk-ins. I never expected that for an Omakase restaurant at this price point. The lady in charge of reservations was really cold to us. I put in the reservation comment that it was for our anniversary. She warmly congratulated a white couple behind us a happy anniversary but said nothing to us. In fact, when I checked out and we met, she looked at me and just walked away without even saying ‘thank you for coming’ or anything.
I am not a sensitive person at all. I never left a single negative review on Google before. But last night’s experience was the first time that got me to think if we were treated differently because of our skin. Our waiter was great so we still tipped generously. But I didn’t pay over 300 bucks to be ignored by the reservation lady and to get myself wondering about discrimination.

What is the purpose of life. Do you realize how incredibly unlikely it is that we are alive. That we have developed taste buds. That we are floating around on a rock in the middle of universe surrounded by nothing. We have a short time alive to experience life and I recommend you spend your time here. Shoutout to Mimi and Don. There might be other sushi in nyc but I can assure you there is no one who cares more about what they are doing. My highest possible recommendation.

Amazing service and food - they went above and beyond. One of the best-value omakase I’ve had in a long time. Will come back again!

The Vietnamese hostess was rude… we arrived on time, and she told us that we had to wait for 5 minutes. We actually waited for more than half an hour. she did not apologize at all…

We made a reservation online, and called to confirm the reservation. We arrived on time, but they made us wait for 30 minutes. At first the hostess told us that we had to wait for 5 minutes, but eventually we waited for 30 minutes. It was pouring outside, and we had to stand and wait outside under the leaky roof. She could have told us up front that the wait time was going to be 30 minutes, so that we would probably wait in the car instead of standing in the rain. The hostess was rude; she did not apologize or anything… Also, the food was okay, but not comparable to the food at the other Ishikawa (Upper West).

A guaranteed terrific meal. You are getting your money’s worth and then some! Each piece of sushi has a strikingly rich composition of flavors that are well balanced. The sequencing keeps things exciting, varying between light, salty, sweet, creamy/rich, tart, crunchy, spicy. Chef-owner Don Pham puts so much creativity and skill into the menu. The wait staff (love you, Nini!) delivers it piece by piece so seamlessly - especially considering that their seating is all outdoors due to pandemic precautions. I miss the banter with Chef Don at the bar (he’s so funny!), but the food does not suffer from being served at tables. Book your reservation early though, bc those slots fill fast.

The meal spoke for itself. The meal was whimsical, flavorful, and hit on all the flavor notes one would expect: salty, sweet, spicy and umami.
My husband chose a saki pairing for his meal and I enjoyed a Japanese beer.
The server had a great sense of humor which made the meal that much more enjoyable.
If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere, great service, incredibly fresh and innovative sushi, this is the place for you.

A little overpriced, but fantastic food.

We came yest for my boyfriend’s birthday and got the 15 course matsu omakase. He got the sale tasting and I got a glass of wine. The food itself was amazing and well worth the price ($155 per omakase).
My main issue was with the ambiance. I love that there is outdoor seating but for a special occasion that is a bit pricey, I expected a similarly matched vibe. The hostess Initially offered an indoor seat but later rescinded the offer. Instead we were sat by a table of 6 and a table of 4 who were so loud that I could barely hear my boyfriend who was across from me. The waiter was knowledgeable but very rushed. Both of these factors took away from the mood.

15 course omakase is simply amazing

I am not going to deny the quality of food is good. But it is just barely good for an top-class omakase. First or all, the waitress cannot tell me the exact difference between the regular omakase and premium omakase. Secondly, putting more truffle/caviar/uni on top of the sushi doesn't really make the dishes more premium. Yes, it obviously makes the food more expensive. Some courses are undeniable tasty (the blue fin toro/ the carb tempura/the sashimi), the other is just at so-so level. I just don't see any sparks or innovations in the premium courses like I see it in other places. I have to say the complimentary dish, the coconut matcha pudding, is the only thing that sheds some light on my memorable evening. This pudding is truly a dish I would happily pay and enjoy. I am not a professional omakase expert anyway. I am just an eater and I want to have some real nice food when I pay a decent price for the meal.

This place is more of a 4.5. It’s no Shinn East. But it was a 5 for me both times

Splurgy omakase sushi spot with lots of luxe ingredients (lots of foie gras, caviar, even gold leaf) that makes you forgive the sky high prices. Not the most refined sushi out there but the nice outdoor dining setup and great staff combined with bold flavors make it a lovely experience.

In absolute awe of this rollercoaster of a ride. Hands down best sushi i’ve ever had, with an overwhelming and jaw dropping amount of creative and fresh flavors blended together. Every bite was so different, yet even more impressive than the last. Several pieces made me feel like I had a world class meal in each bite. There is no comparison that i’ve come across. Worth every penny. We did the 15 course $150 plus the Wagyu $20 and the Sake pairing $55. The Wagyu was better than the Japanese steakhouses i’ve had in the city alone. So much buttery flavor with the ideal amount of grill flavor touched upon it. Definitely worth $20 a piece, you’ll be paying more at other places for less quality! The sake pairing was amazing. 5 unique glasses across dinner, with a variety of flavor between them all. It was its own omakase experience just for the drinks! The servers were world class, and absolutely made our night. They were there to make us feel at home and I felt like we made friends with them by the end of our meal, that’s how damn good they were. For outdoor dining, they bring you piece by piece on a plate, and server you your sake every 3 pieces.
Food: 10/10
Every bite will leave you discussing with your group the myriad of flavors. World class sushi and freshness that can’t be matched
Menu: 5/5
Plenty of options outside the Omakase. Great for all sushi lovers
Experience: 5/5
The servers, the venue, the presentation, everything was absolutely awesome
Value: 3/5
On par for other Omakase restaurants. The quality may be better, but the total price being $275 with the 15 course + sake pairing + Wagyu + tip might be a turn off for some. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience i recommend regardless of price tag.

The food was delicious. Everything. We did the 12 course and it was absolutely enough. The place is an absolute hidden gem. The layers of flavors and the complexity of those layers were mind blowing.
The staff was so generous and thoughtful. I will definitely be back.

It’s the most worthy omasake in New York. A lot of expensive ingredients besides the fishes same to other omasake. At first I didn’t like it, because I thought it’s hard to taste the original flavor of fish with so many other ingredients like truffle, caviar and gold... now I think it worth the price.
Chef’s service is good! But the waitress looks not happy and not patient. I went here 2 years ago. So I’m not saying about the current waitress.

This was a great place to try Omakase. The fish was delicious, and so are the toppings. Black cod with shishito peppers was amazing. So were the truffles on top of the pieces of fish. Although it was expensive, we definitely felt that it was worth it. This may not be some place that we come every week, but it is amazing for a special occasion.

Attention to detail is outstanding as well as creative takes on some sushi classics. A solid option between the classic sushi of Tanoshi and the creativity of Sushi Of Gari, and ironically, geographically in between.

One of the best omakase sushi places in the city at a very good price. The staff is friendly, chef Dom is funny and kind and always takes note of your likes/dislikes/allergies. On more than one occasion he let me try new dishes that he was testing or a new fish he thought I might like. I always felt full. My favorite area is the bar but now during covid they have changed the seating. They have outdoor dining which is heated and nice music in the playground. I come here often and it’s always consistent. Highly recommend.

Really excellent sushi, Michelin star quality and always consistent. We eat here regularly. Even during Covid they have continued to stay open for business and the place is extremely clean and safe. Staff are super nice and go out of their way to help everyone. There’s also a really good sake selection, including some reserve/high end brands.

Had a great time dining outdoors. Valentine's special was obviously a mass package brought out simultaneously for many other couples nearby, but that didn't take anything away from the highly enjoyable courses. Thanks for the desserts and the special gesture for the birthday!

Just when I thought I loved 1 dish, the next dish raised the bar even higher, just a wonderful experience the omakase at Sushi Ishikawa. We tried the 15 course omakase and everything was great, servers were very attentive and offered great hospitality. The only bad thing is realizing you're near the end of the omakase, this omakase experience was well worth the money.
