Great experience! I've been to other sushi by bou locations and love that every one of them is slightly different. This place was more like a Speakeasy. The coffee shop in front was "closed." The lights were off, and the door had a lock on it. But it wasn't actually closed. You come in, and in the back, there was someone to confirm your reservation. Very small and intimate space inside. The sushi was wonderful. I like the contemporary take on each course. The chimichurri and chili oil ones were surprising to me. The traditional takes on sushi is great, but the occasional contemporary take is great too.

This place was recommended through a friend and I knew I had to give it a try just from the pictures alone. The service was amazing from start to finish. I had requested a couple of things since it was my friend’s birthday dinner and they did everything I asked for and more!
The omakase experience in itself was incredible as well. It felt like I had my own private chef since the bar felt more intimate than other omakases I’ve been to. Overall the experience was 10/10 I’m definitely coming back

The gem is hidden away in the coffee shop, and while it looks unassuming, it is my favorite go-to spot for sushi. The fish is always incredibly fresh and some of the best sushi ever! 😋 They have excellent customer service, and their music is very soothing! 10/10. I would highly recommend it if you are craving delicious sushi! It is hands down the freshest and tastiest! I've had it several times, and the freshness, taste, and prep speed never fail. I love the tuna sushi and nigiri! So good! Highly recommend.

I am not a big sushi fan, so I was looking forward to trying this place. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a speakeasy setting. The restaurant was gorgeous and small. I sat in the sushi making area, and they gave me different sushi, and they were delicious, most of them! Alex made the sushi and he was great! I then had some great cocktails! I definitely enjoyed it!

It was our first time visiting, thanks to the BOGO deal, and we were thoroughly impressed. The location is unbeatable—nestled at the back of a cozy cafe/flower shop, the speakeasy atmosphere adds a touch of elegance to this already exceptional omakase spot. Imax, the manager, was wonderful—warm, attentive, and consistently checking in to ensure everything was perfect. Chef Jack was equally fantastic, explaining each sushi piece and making sure we enjoyed every bite. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the attention to detail was evident in every dish. This was easily a 10/10 experience, and we’d absolutely return!

Tucked inside a coffee shop. Very discreet sushi bar offering quality omakase. Only two omakase choices, $65 and $100. $100 comes with a shot of sake. Fish quality on par so is the chef skill. We order one set each to experience the difference. Both nice. But I personally think next time I will order $65 then add pieces I want, instead of filling up first.

This place has become my go-to spot for the best sushi, impeccable service, and an atmosphere that feels like a second home.
Every time I walk in, I'm greeted by the friendly staff who make me feel like part of the family. The sushi chefs are truly my favorites, each one showcasing remarkable skill and creativity in every dish they prepare. It's always a treat to watch them work their magic and savor the exquisite flavors they create. ( I like saying suprime me for special unique pieces)
The bartenders are equally fantastic, with a deep knowledge of their craft that shines through in every drink they serve. Their recommendations are always spot-on, enhancing the dining experience with perfectly paired cocktails.
The ambience is just right—inviting, comfortable, and with a touch of elegance that makes every visit special.

Amazing dining experience from start to finish! Imax is a fantastic host, accommodating and very welcoming. Adrian did a fantastic job with all of our drinks. Jack our chef served some immaculate and delicious dishes and explained every piece throughout! Opted for the 17 course bougie offering, and as per usual, it did not disappoint. Finished the night with delicious mochi and a final shot of saki with Imax and Adrian. Will definitely be back!!!

Brian our sushi chef was absolutely fantastic and a true master of his craft. Every piece he presented was to die for, each one melting in your mouth and leaving you wanting more. This was my first time to New York, but it will not be my last after this experience. The management and staff are incredibly personable, the experience intimate, and all around a once in a lifetime feel of a time. I’d recommend this to anyone in the world to try.

SBB in Chelsea is my favorite location of them all. We started coming here about a year and a half ago and met the manager Imax and their team of chefs. They go above and beyond to provide the best service and what truly defines hospitality. I've taken friends, groups, parents here, everyone leaves raving about the team and experience.
This is the perfect dining experience if your a local or visiting NYC.

Accidentally posted from my husbands account but not mad at double posting bc that good lol ~ This place has a 4.8 rating for a reason! 10/10 experience, Imax the manager / host was incredible and made our experience 10X better! The mixologist did not miss on any of the drinks and had such incredible personality. I took my coworker for her bday & we truly had the best time. I also love it’s a speakeasy vibe & the quality of fish is on point. It’s hard to find high quality fatty tuna and theirs could compete with anyone. I love the JC location so it was awesome to find out the NY Chelsea one was on point with service & quality. Can’t wait to try more of their locations but I will definitely be back at this one!

Randomly found this place on a Tuesday night and had a wonderful experience. Staff was so friendly, food was DELICIOUS, and at a reasonable price. Only critique is that each piece was quite a bit smaller than other omakase I've had - but the flavor and freshness was exceptional.

I’m never disappointed with my experience at Sushi but Bou. The Chelsea location is my favorite in the group. The manager, Imax, always makes sure I’m having a good time. The most delicious omakase ever. I love the menu because each piece truly has its own distinctly delicious flavor profile. The miso cod, fatty tuna, salmon yuzu, and chicken of the sea are my faves. Also the IMAX and the chefs are my favorite at this location :) I'm addicted and will be back again soon.

Came here for the food. Will come back for the food, the service, and the atmosphere. All of the staff were so friendly and fantastic. First time meeting Imax, the manager, and he treated us like regulars. The hostess, the bartender, and the sushi chef are interactive and funny. Arrive early so you could enjoy the cool bar area with a nicely curated drinks menu.

Food was mid to decent but I wouldn’t recommend them because they do not honor their offers. I bought a 2 for 1 offer from them with no mention of an expiration date on the offer page or confirmation email. I emailed them to book a reservation using the offer and they still didn’t mention anything about my requested date being “outside the offer window”. I arrived 45 mins early and still no one mentioned that my offer was no longer valid. They waited until we finished eating to hit us with a bill. They only offered us the dollar amount we paid as a discount and explained that the offer ended 3 days ago. How convenient.
It was my first time here and it will be my last. 1000% would not recommend—both because they aren’t trustworthy and because the food isn’t worth the price. You can get a better omakase with more pieces for the same price elsewhere in the city.

Sushi Bou in Manhattan is an absolute gem and hands-down one of my top favorite spots in the city. This small restaurant exudes a fun New York City vibe, making it perfect for an intimate yet lively dining experience. From the moment you step in, you’re welcomed by Imax, the maître d’ whose hospitality is truly something special. His warmth and engagement instantly make you feel like a VIP, enhancing every moment of your meal.
The food here is nothing short of spectacular. The chefs at Sushi Bou have mastered the art of flavor, creating unique, inventive combinations that elevate traditional sushi to new heights. Each bite is fresh, bold, and beautifully presented—a true testament to the skill and creativity in the kitchen.
With multiple locations, Sushi bou consistently delivers this high-quality experience!!!

Sushi by Bou (SB) provides a more than decent omakase experience for a very reasonable price. Just to be very clear, this is not your top notch Michelin star omakase experience but rather a "good enough" reasonable substitute. You absolutely get a omakase experience with some of the concoctions pushing the fusion boundary a bit. But the elegance of a master sushi maker is something that you won't get.
I like the fact that they went experimental with some of the sauces or how the ingrdients were put together. For example, the Big Mac (which isn't part of the standard omakase) combines 3~4 premium ingredients like uni. Yes it tastes good but it doesn't mean that the creation blows your mind where you experience something completely unexpected. Some of the experiments work, but many of them draft behind good fish.
This location in Chelsea is a bit difficult to find. It is hidden at the back of a coffee shop and if you don't ask, you'll never find it. You walk through the coffee shop to have a secret door open which leads you to this cozy alcove where there are about 8 omakase seats and a separate bar. Again, great atmosphere and the servers were friendly.
Go to SB for a casual omakase experience. Don't set your expectations too high though. This is casual.

Sushi by Bou is AMAZING!!! I took my mom for her first omakase experience at 76 years old, and she absolutely LOVED IT!!! I’ve been to several omakase spots in NYC but this one was really awesome. The chef had really fun and positive energy and the staff was very friendly and attentive. The drinks were delicious (my mom doesn’t drink at her age but she enjoyed the sparkling water lol) and the most important part, the omakase was INCREDIBLE! The flavor profiles for each piece were so accurate and distinct, and you leave the place feeling like you at a healthy amount without feeling the typical “I’m stuffed” sluggish feeling afterwards, which is our typical association for feeling “full” in America when in reality, we’re all just accustomed to overeating with every meal we have. The food at Sushi By Bou was so refreshing. This was honestly my favorite omakase experience that I’ve had so far. Thanks guys!

I went here for their signature omakase course and it was such a fun time! The restaurant itself was a speakeasy vibe which was a surprise, you had to go into a cafe first and an inconspicuous door in the back led to the restaurant. The space was pretty quaint with 8-10 bar stools at the sushi bar counter, as well as 4-6 two seater tables, and a normal bar with a counter as well. The decor and vibe was really intimate and cute, and the servers were so welcoming! We got sat and they immediately took our drink order. They were also very attentive at cleaning up and making sure we had everything we needed. BUT the highlight of the night was definitely our sushi chef, Jack! He was so nice and personable, and chatted with us all night, making sure to go through the omakase course at the pace we were eating and drinking. He was extremely knowledgeable about all the flavors being used and told us how they make all the sauces and toppings in house. He even was generous enough to give us an extra piece of sushi which was so nice! Though I have to admit I’ve had fresher sashimi for a couple of the nigiris, everything was still very good and well prepared 🫶🏻 At the end of the meal one of the server brought us and Jack sake shots, which was a nice touch. The servers had friendly banter and were personable but still professional. Overall it was such a fun experience and I would definitely go again and recommend it to a friend! Especially for the price, very worth it 😊

Sushi by Bou in Chelsea offers a unique and immersive dining experience for sushi lovers. The omakase-style restaurant is a standout for its intimate setting and expertly crafted dishes. Each course showcases the chef's skill, with fresh, high-quality ingredients that highlight the flavors of traditional sushi.
The ambiance is modern and sleek, making it perfect for a special occasion or a memorable night out. The chefs are knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights about each dish as it's served, which adds to the overall experience.

We went for the BOGO special, which offered a 12-piece omakase for two people at $70. Upon arrival, we were led into a small speakeasy-style setting with only three other parties. Despite the limited crowd, the customer service was still lacking. As we enjoyed our nigiri, we noticed the couple next to us had opted for the upgraded 17-piece omakase. Even though the chef was serving them additional pieces that weren’t part of our order, the same nigiri we were served had noticeably smaller portions of fish compared to theirs.
After being served our last piece, we expected the waiter to return with the check, as is customary at omakase settings. However, after waiting for over 10 minutes, my boyfriend and I had to walk up to the waitstaff, only to find them chatting idly. While I had already paid for the BOGO special online (which mentioned that gratuity and taxes were not included), I was shocked by the number of hidden fees that appeared on the final bill.
In the end, it felt like a complete waste of time. Despite the 12-piece omakase, both my boyfriend and I left feeling hungry. The way they advertised the BOGO deal was misleading, as the portions were clearly reduced. Unfortunately, this experience fell far short of expectations.

Sushi by Bou - Chelsea NYC @ Super Nice Coffee: A Culinary Gem for Omakase Lovers
Nestled inside Super Nice Coffee, Sushi by Bou in Chelsea is a hidden treasure that offers one of the best omakase experiences in New York City. The moment you step inside, you're greeted with an intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for a date night or a special evening out. The space features a handful of seats at the counter where diners can watch the skilled chefs meticulously prepare each piece of sushi. There are also a few tables, providing a more private but equally exceptional experience.
The food? Simply put, incredible. We opted for the 17-course Bougie Omakase, and each bite somehow surpassed the one before. Every piece was masterfully crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients that melted in your mouth, from buttery tuna to perfectly balanced uni. It's hard to choose a standout because each course was flawless, but the richness and precision of flavors were undeniable.
The service elevated the experience to another level. Imax, who greeted us at the door, ensured we felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. He checked in throughout the night, making sure everything was perfect without being intrusive. It was clear that the staff took pride in creating an unforgettable dining experience.
Sushi by Bou at Super Nice Coffee isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a destination for sushi enthusiasts and anyone looking for an extraordinary culinary journey. Hands down, one of the best omakase spots in the city. If you’re in NYC and love sushi, this place should be at the top of your list.

A unique concept of a speak easy sushi restuarant tucked behind a coffee shop. The team works extra hard to make you feel at home and the food is quite uniquely prepared. Overall, a very enjoyable meal.

The worst omakase I've had in NYC. Fish quality was average at best, the sushi rice was overly seasoned and undercooked. They torched the albacore so much it became entirely cooked. The miso cod tasted good but it was odd to see miso cod in sushi (usually a dish to eat with plain white rice) The only thing they got right was probably the fish to rice ratio. I came to sushi by bou with the buy 2 get one free deal and I still think it was not worth it. I got take out sushi the following night at my neighborhood joint and honestly it was better 😅 if you have omakase regularly please do yourself a favor and skip this place.

I'm not sure who is writing these reviews, but the food was nothing really different from Uber delivery sushi. I'm not saying they are bad, but they have different expectations. Come on, it's Omakase. I can name so many better sushi/japanese restaurants with in the same price. The rice was undercooked and hard. That tells all. Sauce was too strong for me at least to me.

Very small sushi pieces, which admittedly you sometimes see in fine sushi restaurants (e.g. 15 East), but in this case was surprising since the pieces are significantly larger at other Bou locations (e.g. Times Square and Koreatown). Not sure why the portions would vary so much, but maybe that's just up to the individual managers.
While some of the pieces were tasty, e.g. the toro, miso cod, and yellowtail, we were still so hungry after this omakase that we ended up walking to a Japanese grocery to get rice balls and snacks.
This location also rather aggressively upsells to the 17 course for $35 extra. We received 2 text msgs with the offer before entering and then again when we were seated. Perhaps the offer should come with a warning that you will still be hungry if you don't take it. It also makes for an awkward counter service since some customers are receiving more pieces than others. Speaking of the counter, the corner seat I occupied had a door curtain draping over my shoulder, which was fairly annoying until I figured out how to fold it under the framed menu on the wall.
In summary, unfortunately this was the worst Bou we'd ever been to, in terms of the food and the experience. Especially now that there are many other reasonable omakase places opening up around the city, we will not return.

Sushi by Bou offers a standout omakase sushi experience that's elevated by its unique blend of exceptional food and outstanding hospitality.
From the moment you step into this intimate restaurant, the atmosphere feels both sophisticated and welcoming. Imax whose warm and inviting demeanor makes you feel right at home with his attention to detail and personalized service truly enhance the dining experience, making each visit memorable.
The culinary highlight at Sushi by Bou is, of course, the sushi itself. The craftsmanship and quality of each piece are impressive, showcasing the artistry of their sushi chefs. One must-try item on the menu is the “Big Mac,” a playful and inventive sushi creation that challenges diners to eat it in one bite. It’s a bold move that pays off with a burst of flavors and textures that are both exciting and satisfying.
Complementing the exceptional sushi is Adrian, the bartender, who crafts some of the best drinks you'll find. His cocktails are not only expertly made but also thoughtfully designed to enhance the flavors of your meal. Whether you're in the mood for something classic or adventurous, Adrian’s creations are sure to impress.
Overall, Sushi by Bou delivers a remarkable dining experience, combining top-tier sushi with an atmosphere that feels both upscale and welcoming. The combination of Imax’s heartfelt hospitality and Adrian’s exceptional drinks makes this an omakase experience you’ll want to return to again and again.

I love Sushi by Bou! This was by far my favorite location—the chef and staff were welcoming, the space wasn’t a small as the others, etc. The food was amazing as always—the restaurant has a fairly standard omakase menu but they do it well. Every bite was AMAZING! They also can make any of the rolls as a hand roll (a la carte) at the end if you want; we got a few and asked them to add some truffle salt on it and it was sooooo good. I had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go back.

Hands down one of my favorite places in NY - from the amazing food, to the great cocktails, music, and everyone that makes the experience what it is. You’re guaranteed a great night every night you go here. Special shout out to Imax for always creating the best nights for everyone.

BEST PLACE EVER!!!

Food - I would give food a 3.5 out of 5. This was my second ever omakase after Tanoshi, and as a result I did do a lot of comparing. Tanoshi was a life changing experience but I would say this was just a very good meal. Compared to most sushi places, this is high level pieces of amazing quality. However I wouldn't say most were greatly innovative. The miso cod and chopped tuna were the only pieces I feel I couldn't get anywhere else. The wagyu uni was my favorite but I think I got less uni here than at Tanoshi (it is cheaper I guess). Finally the final piece of the unagi I got had a weird sharp edge or something. I managed to wash it down with sake so I didn't order additional pieces and at this point my companion and I decided it was better we fill up l elsewhere. I will say - I don't think the 12 pieces is sufficient for most people unless you're planning on adding pieces! Maybe the 15 piece experience is but for the cost and service, I wouldn't necessarily do that here.
Service - the non-chef staff are very attentive and kind. I really appreciated how prompt their service is and how attentive they were. For our chef we had Orly who was fun and engaging - except I think he interacted far more with the couple in front of him than me and my companion. I was seated in the far corner so unfortunately it felt kinda like I was a wallflower. There was a point where he lets you torch the wagyu - that was the most interaction we had.
Atmosphere - like I mentioned above, I was unfortunately stuck in the far corner so I did feel a little trapped and not engaged at some points which really stinks. In my first and previous omakase experience I felt a lot more free to engage with our sushi chef and there was a semblance of more privacy and care even though it was also counter seating. I will say the speakeasy experience was really cool introduction to the restaurant but it's only a short part of the whole experience.
Finally - we went to celebrate a work promotion for me and I paid. I didn't realize they calculate the tip on the amount with the free drinks added - which was very nice of them to give us free drinks but the tipping calculation just felt like a hidden/sneaky thing if that makes sense.
To wrap it all up: would I come to Sushi by BOU again? Maybe but I wouldn't say the experience was so unique that I won't just try another omakase experience where I think I can have more of a conversation with the chef and really fall in love with each bite. I didn't get that from Sushi by BOU but for budget omakase I think it's a pretty decent time.

Amazing experience! The attention, the whole staff was so attentive the minute i walked in (i had a 9pm reservation) came from queens to give this a try! I am so glad i came here. The wagyuni and japanese flounder with pesto were my favorite, the cosmo made by tate was spot on, highly recommend 10/10

We don’t recommend this place as they advertised it on Open Table as a 17 course Omakase menu for $100 each, and then it turned out to be just 12 courses. And then tried to con us by convincing everyone there was 17 courses. Beware, do not go to this restaurant.

Sushi by Bou is a beautiful experience where you can see the art of Omakase. This location at super nice coffee had the best staff. Compliments to “El Chapo” he was such an amazing person and has the experience you want when you’re eating at a wonderful restaurant. Couldn’t be happier about the experience.

Sushi by bou is such a luxurious unique speakeasy experience. Sushi by Bou offers a traditional Japanese omakase experience, where the chef selects the finest seasonal ingredients and guides you through a timed tasting. The speakeasy offers a signature 12-piece omakase and an upgraded 17-course omakase, using the finest quality fish and traditional edomae techniques. Our chef was so nice and knowledgeable about every dish he served. The ambiance gives off chic 1920s vibes with elegant accents of gold.

I definitely enjoyed it!

came here for a birthday and did the 12 piece omakase experience. sushi was pretty good for nyc, our chef ryan was great!
drinks were just ok id rec the yuzu honey bee.
service was just ok staff was friendly but nothing spectacular. the wagyu was mid and the pairings at the end of the menu did not go together. didn’t really meet my expectations but would probably be better as a go to omakase rather than special occasions omakase. apparently they sell hats but they didn’t provide us any despite our requests! overall solid spot but def won’t be back

We went here for the Omakase. It has a speakeasy vibe hidden behind a Cafe storefront.
Fair warning - They have time slots that they stick to. They start serving on time even if you’re not there.
The menu was amazing, the food was great and the service and setting made it as a personalized/intimate experience!
We were able to get alternatives accordingly to dietary restrictions and preference. My boyfriend is allergic to shellfish and our chef kept that in mind and gave him tuna/salmon alternatives.
We really liked the Miso Cool and in the end when they asked if we’d Ike to repeat an order - we weren’t allowed to order that as apparently it took longer to prepare which was a bummer.
Overall great food, ambience and experience. Would definitely recommend it to friends!

Had an unreal experience here last night for a birthday. The service was incredible, the sushi was delicious, and the vibes were great. We were having such a good time that after our 1 hour omakase was up we didn't want to leave so we hung around at the bar with the staff for another hour. One of the best restaurant experiences of my life. Will definitely be back again.

I didn't notice any Japanese chefs or staff during my visit; instead, the team seemed to be primarily Hispanic which doesn’t bother me who prepares it as long as they provide a great sushi and service. Actually my sushi chef was great and fish was fresh except their watery Uni. However, I did have some concerns about the manager's demeanor. Upon arrival, we were cautioned about being careful with the interior decor, which felt unnecessary as we hadn't interacted with anything yet. We paid $625 for the 1 hour visit — 3 Omakase $100 meals, 3 beers, and a $130 Daiginjo sake bottle plus tip. Considering you can sit at counter only 1 hour, I would not recommend.

An unforgettable dining experience awaits at this hidden gem of an omakase speakeasy nestled within a flower/coffee shop. Our family dinner here was nothing short of magical. My 9-year-old son was thrilled with his non-alcoholic cocktail, which was both delicious and refreshing. The sushi, served piece by piece as part of the $100 omakase, was impeccably fresh and expertly crafted, leaving us in awe with each bite. What truly set this experience apart was the intimate setting - with just our family in attendance during our time slot, it felt as though we had a personal sushi chef catering exclusively to us. The warmth and friendliness of the staff added to the welcoming atmosphere, making it a truly memorable evening for our family. Highly recommend for a unique and delightful dining experience!

Great omakase. The Chelsea location’s drink specials were some of the best drinks I’ve had. John is great. Get the spicy passion and the green dame. I like that you can come early and sit down for a drink before your seating and do the same after your seating is over. We stayed about 2 hours and never felt rushed. Good for dates

I am an African American model that was book through beauty pass with my agency to come to the restaurant to enjoy a 12 course meal. The general was very disrespectful and lied about the seating arrangements according to the hostess. When I told him I had reserved he told he to leave the restaurant that it was a private event . When I told him to update the app he told me to leave the establishment.

Sushi by bou has always been my favorite spot for Omakase in nyc. I’ve been a customer since their first location, and every single location exceeds expectations—from the enthusiasm of the staff to the quality of the sushi—this spot is a must for everyone who values great service and top notch food. I particularly want to thank Imax, the manager of this location, for always treating us like family. His energy is exactly what you want from a restaraunt—a place where you quite literally go to rest. Hard to find special places like this these days!

Food and service was excellent. If you're looking for a unique and personal sushi spot then this should be your go-to. All of the staff were friendly, happy, and overly accomodating. The manager, Imax, was extremely helpful when there was a mix-up in our party (our fault, Not the restaurant's) and was able to work his magic and accomodate our extra guest on a busy night. They made my birthday special and memorable while making my guests feel well taken care of. The food was top quality and the chef was very polite and professional.

Sushi By Bou 7th Ave (Chelsea) gave me & my partner truly such a personal & amazing experience for his birthday! Really special thanks to Sam, Sarah, & Ymax (spelling?), & the quiet gentlemen (unfortunately didn’t get his name but he seated us at the counter & answered our questions about how to eat the sushi — with your hands btw, the chopsticks are for the ginger!). This was an excellent first omakase counter experience for both of us.
My partner's friend had recommended another Sushi By Bou location, but we secured a res at Chelsea for Thurs 8pm because we wanted to visit some bars nearby.
After mistakenly attempting to barge into an apt bldg with the same street number, we confusingly entered a flower-covered café with an easy-to-miss Sushi By Bou logo projected on the sidewalk. The lady inside confirmed our res & led us to the back door. A short hallway then revealed the omakase bar, which was a speakeasy surprise that we loved!
Though the back wasn't as dimly lit as a real speakeasy, the mid-sized area crafted a nice club-ish vibe with a luxe look. We saw the omakase bar was entirely full, with a handful of loud gentlemen on the other side by the drinking bar. We were seated in the small comfy lounge area to wait for our seats.
Every single cocktail we had at this place was amazing!! Sarah the bartender took care of her patrons at the bar while also personally delivering our drinks to our table (except when we were seated at the omakase counter)... Where else do you get table service straight from the bartender, what?! I was impressed with each drink, even starting with the mocktail Easy Peasy. I don't like the taste of alcohol & my partner enjoys spirit-forward drinks, but when I sampled his, it was evident that Sarah's skill is above even normal NYC speakeasy standards. My partner had the Barkeep’s Special, which was a "Banana Old-Fashioned" unique to Sarah. Each sip began spirit-forward but masterfully blended away into sweet/delicious when you swallowed. Following our 30-min omakase, we continued drinking in the lounge area, & Sarah spent quite some time with us answering our questions. My partner & I took notes on her ingredients, technique, & knowledge, since he enjoys mixing cocktails as a hobby. Sarah is truly a generous, knowledgeable bartender, & her creations, energy, & service were highlights of our night!
The other highlight was the omakase counter experience itself. We watched attentively as Sam our chef pieced together each item, as well as the differing items for the 1h course of the couple next to us. Sam also answered all our questions about his preparation or the ingredients, and it was a true pleasure to see him at work, calm & meticulous. The "Surf-n-turf" piece was particularly delicious, prompting us to order the Big Mac x 2 from the à la carte menu – which is ~$20/per piece, btw, so if you like Wagyu beef, it might be worth getting the 1-hr experience anyway just FYI. We had also indicated on the reservation that it was my partner's birthday, & Ymax (sp?) served us complimentary sake! It felt really great to be able to share a toast with Sam our chef, who was giving us such great service and flavor.
After this excellent 30-minute omakase experience, it seemed they had a lull in customers & the omakase counter was unoccupied until maybe their 9:30pm reservations. As mentioned before, at this time Sarah generously answered all our questions by our table in the lounge area. We were going to host a house party in a few days, and she spent so much time giving us her recs for drink recipes and sharing her techniques. Ymax returned with more sake & chatted with us too.
Everyone’s energy at Sushi By Bou Chelsea made sure we had an amazing night, and this was even though we had initially arrived in a cranky mood LOL…. I’d never before left a dining experience knowing or wanting to know everyone’s name who had taken care of us!
P.S. I was told the bar is open without reservations, so I hope this "speakeasy" stays low-key for us to return for more drinks in the future!

Fantastic omakase experience! We’ve been to the time square location before and the atmosphere at this location was better for larger groups because it was less cramped. It was basically a speakeasy experience where you enter through the coffee shop. The sushi was delicious and the chefs are super friendly and talented. For the price of $60, you get 12 pieces which can’t be beat around nyc. When we went for labor day, we also got an extra piece as part of the holiday special. Last tip, highly recommend booking through the website or just visiting the website because there are promo codes to apply for free drinks. We look forward to visiting other sushi by bou locations around the city!
