Sushi Experience №1

Food experience was great. But the place itself is tiny, feels crowded. The chairs are very hard to sit on. The drink selection is not that great also. But again, food was amazing. Typical East Village crowd, no one was dressed up. Foodie destination for sure, but not if you are looking for a fine dining experience.

Sushi Experience №4

Finally after walking by so many times (I live down the street) I was able to slip in last minute for a Friday night dinner with my parents who were in town visiting. My mom had mentioned several times how much she wanted to try Rosella and we were able to snag a last minute bar seating for the three of us. Just by quickly observing, you could tell what an amazing flow this staff has together- everything is clean, perfect volume of music was going, everyone was warm, welcoming, and the space is really cozy and feels intimate and cool without being pretentious or relaxed. Celia was incredibly kind to us as we were squeezed in for a quick dinner in between another reservation- but never once made us feel hurried or rushed.

We came for light bites as we have been eating our way through Manhattan and have been in a week long food coma- this was the perfect night for Rosella.
The miso soup made with farro was creamy and layered with flavor and such a cozy way to start our meal, we had the salmon avocado roll and spicy tuna both were absolutely phenomenal -my dad had the fish slider and loved it- he’s usually a very harsh critic so we were relieved he had the same experience we did..
Celia brought over the most incredible endive salad since she said we ordered “light” and we all agreed it was by far the best salad we’ve yet to have in New York. As a California native who has been here for almost 7 years constantly hunting for an amazing salad that ticks off the boxes- this one hit. The dressing I can’t even describe was punchy and fresh but still light- the crunchy endive and the amazing shiso leaves …I will be dreaming about that salad.
We also had to order the coconut sorbet - which was dressed with basil oil and quite simply blew my mind. I used to have many ideas of what my last meal dessert would be but all of that is out the window with this sorbet. Wow is all I have to say. Celia yet again surprised us with another treat- the carrot cake- which was an absolute joy visually with the matching confetti plate, incredible edible flowers, and the perfect not to sweet frosting. The only negative thing is I live two blocks away and work 4 blocks away so it will take a lot of self control to not come every single day.

Seriously between the amazingly warm staff who took such great care of us and made sure we felt how special this was, to the incredible food bursting with unique and stunning flavors, to the cozy ambiance I cannot wait to be back and to tell my people how much I loved it. Thank you!

Food was OUTSTANDING. However the pacing of the dishes was off and we overall felt rushed. As a result, we ordered less than we would’ve otherwise. I still want to go back and try more dishes but hope the service is improved in the meantime.

Everything about the experience of our meal at Rosella was incredible. First of all the atmosphere inside is beautiful. The staff were all incredible, so warm, inviting and friendly. They have the kind of service that is both attentive and not overwhelming. I dropped a chopstick toward the end of our meal and I didn't think anyone noticed, then 10 seconds later a man appeared with a replacement. Each dish we had was delicious from apps to dessert. I will 100% be back and bring friends.

If you go in with a closed mindset, Rosella will seem overpriced and almost an abomination. You’ll think they’re just slapping a big price tag on what read as simple dishes. You’d be dead wrong. If you open your eyes and let yourself explore, you’ll see a clear mastery of traditional techniques, from the cut of the fish to the rice, paired with a desire to show love and appreciation to countless other cultures and flavors that leave you saying, “I can’t believe I almost didn’t eat that”. When I go to other sushi restaurants, I usually find myself uninspired and compare one visit to a favorite from the past. Needless to say, after visiting Rosella I feel a new optimism for all the things sushi can be.

Thanks Rosella for a great meal, and keep doing what y’all do.

This was the best meal of my life. Should this place have a Michelin star? I have been to places which are not as good which do. This helped redefine what sushi could be for me. The ceviche was unbelievable and uniquely perfect, the fatty tuna roll was one of the most incredible bites of food i’ve had in my life, the miso soup was the best i’ve ever had by a mile, while the pickled mussel nigiri was the best bite I have ever had in my life, finally the coconut milk sorbet was near perfect and demolished my already high expectations. I cannot recommend this place yourself. The perfect mix of fun, laid back, and classy all rolled into one. Utterly amazing!

Amazing experience at Rosella, the food was incredible, we didn’t have a single thing we didn’t love (seriously!) and we had prob half the menu! Ceviche & Summer Sashimi, Black Sea bass Laksa, lots of sashimi/nigiri (the Smoked trout and Bonito were favs), fatty tuna/white kimchi + spicy avo and spicy tuna rolls. Topped off with Miso carrot cake and coconut sorbet. The cake was prob some of the best I’ve ever had, such an interesting twist with the miso but so good. The service was perfect, the people were so nice and welcoming. We sat at the bar which is a treat, chatting with the chefs making your meals and feeling a part of the experience. Highly recommend this place and will be back!

the food was actually fantastic, but our waiter was such a vibe killer, a bit pretentious. “oh you have NEVER tasted sushi this delicious.” like (white) dude, what? and then proceeded to tell us what we should order and when we picked something else, he seemed annoyed. would’ve been five stars had he just left us alone instead over explaining every dish.

Way too much upselling for a place this pricey. The waiter first suggested he just bring us a bunch of food. Not an omakase option, just “let us order for you”. Then we were asked “how hungry are you?” I don’t know, how about we just order some stuff ourselves and see how we feel? It’s a sushi restaurant! Also, I was somehow nudged into a half bottle of sake instead of the glass I asked for. The food is great and priced accordingly. No need to upsell! We constantly felt like we were disappointing the waiter by not ordering enough, and no one wants to feel that way.

Rosella isn't bad. It's just vastly, vastly overpriced for semi-creative Japanese fusion. Dozens of restaurants in the city can do the same thing, and many don't charge as much as Rosella does.

This is sushi/Japanese designed for rich white people who can afford to travel to Japan but still can't tell you what omakase means, and the prices--and clientele--reflect that. Why else would Rosella charge $21 for a Spicy Tuna Roll? Six average-sized pieces containing nothing particularly unique besides avocado, jalapeno and spicy mayo. Oh, I forgot, they added an herb or something in there. I didn't realize dill now cost $21.

We let our server order for us, and he got us almost everything on the not-very-big menu, so I can say with confidence that we tried the best that Rosella had to offer. If you want sushi--whether traditional or fusion--this is NOT the place to go, as not only are the rolls overpriced, but also there are only three options in their "Little Roll" (re: teeny-tiny 6 pieces) category, and three options in their "Big Roll" (re: average-sized 6 pieces--this ain't futomaki), and none of them are that special.

You're better off trying the cold and hot dishes. I quite enjoyed the creative Ceviche, which came with scallops and kiwi, while the Crudo with monkfish liver was great. Just be prepared to fork over $23+ each for portion sizes that would be classified as snacks at other restaurants. Also, why the hell is Laksa on a Japanese fusion menu?

Rosella shines best in its desserts. The Miso Carrot Cake was moist, fragrant and beautiful to behold, while the creamy Coconut Sorbet came mixed with ginger and lemongrass with a lovely basil drizzle. Get these, whatever else you do.

Bottom line: Rosella will undoubtedly appeal to hype-following foodies who blindly spend on omakases while having no actual idea what omakase means. For true sushi, Japanese and general food aficionados, the main impression it will leave is a dent in your wallet.

Excellent, kinda under the radar spot. Found this by personal recommendation, not by any ABSOLUTE BEST EVER or TOP 25 PLACES TO LINE UP ALL NIGHT AT sort of list. Though they have earned some well deserved recognition I since learned.

Great food and perfect sake recommendation. Ginger dressing house salad was fresh and lively. XO grits were as rich and complex of a comfort food as you could hope for. Trout, bluefin, and wagyu nigiri all well prepared, high quality meats with delicate seasoning.

I’m surprised this place came so highly recommended. Was expecting to be blown away by the food, but was disappointed. Perhaps we came on a bad night. The best thing we tried was the endive salad. Otherwise the rolls were boring. They looked sloppy, were bland and the flavors unbalance. Overly acidic to the point you could not even taste the fish. The bang is not worth the buck.

You ever walk out of a restaurant and are already thinking about the next time you’ll go back? This is that place for my husband and I! We had the pleasure of going here last night and had the absolute best time and meal! I wish I would have taken pictures of all the amazing food to share but we were so immersed in the experience that I forgot about my phone. This was our first time here and we plan to become regulars, it far exceeded our expectations! Jeff the sushi wizard not only dished out pure magic on a plate but was so awesome to talk to! Great date spot if you’re in EV. Food was really good. Definitely a little over priced but if you’re a NY’er you’ll understand that a space on a Prime Street live Avenue A isn’t cheap! Service was very good too. Server did how ever mention to me that they had another reservation in 15 min while I was still finishing my last roll. That was alittle annoying as I didn’t like that I was being rushed. In any event still a great spot to go to. PS: Restroom was super clean and the Googly eyes on the plant was a great touch!

Been here twice now (once when it opened, and again two weeks ago.
I am glad the restaurant seems to be doing well but the style of food is too westernized for my liking for this type of restaurant.
Tips are also precalculated for you post tax. Service was very poor that day - our server was acting as if she wanted to be anywhere else. I had two portions of the bill charged to my card, and tipped accordingly on my share to reflect my view of the service and yet the charge on my card is showing the full 20% tip on the post tax amount.

Hope this was a mistake because I am pretty sure this is illegal.

Rosella is exceptional. The food is absolutely top notch and amazingly creative. So many things on the menu sound like questionable combinations but always take you on a wild taste rollercoaster. Egg, caviar, maple dessert? Yellowtail, red and pickled green strawberry pesto crudo? What? But yes, absolutely yes. Bluefin, coconut milk ceviche? Yes. Also, why is the miso soup the best I've ever had in my life?

The drink menu is superb and the staff is so knowledgeable that they do incredible pairings. The staff is also super friendly and attentive.

This place target is to serve local fish sushi and in my opinion was one of the best experience I have.
I would recommend the shrimp nigiri that is simply amazing.

My recent visit to Rosella left me with mixed feelings about this sushi spot. While the ambiance and the staff were top-notch, there were some aspects that left me questioning the overall value.

Let's start with the positives. The staff at Rosella were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Their warmth and hospitality added a pleasant touch to the dining experience, making us feel welcomed.

However, I couldn't help but notice the limited sushi menu, which was a bit disappointing for someone who enjoys a diverse selection of sushi options. The offerings seemed quite restricted, and I was hoping for a more extensive array to choose from.

Additionally, the portions left me wanting more, both in terms of variety and quantity. The prices seemed a bit steep considering the relatively small portions. While the quality of the sushi was commendable, I couldn't shake the feeling that I didn't get my money's worth.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a cozy atmosphere and exceptional service, Rosella is a solid choice. However, if you're a sushi enthusiast expecting a wide variety and normal portions, you might want to explore other options in the area. With a few tweaks to the menu and portion sizes, Rosella could easily elevate its dining experience and garner a higher rating.

I solo dined at Rosella and had a great experience. The restaurant is very welcoming, and the service was excellent. Isaac was very attentive and gave great food and wine recommendations.

The fish is all locally sourced, so they are putting a sustainable focus on sushi which I like. I thought some dishes were better than others. Here’s what I ordered:
- Spicy Avocado hand roll
- Fluke crudo
- 3 pieces of Nigiri (shrimp, smoked trout, bluefin tuna)
- Laksa soup
I really liked the spicy avocado hand-roll and the sushi was good, but I have had better sushi in the city. I thought the food was good, but didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. However, I loved the service and vibe and what they’re doing. I will definitely come back to try more of their dishes.

This sushi restaurant is a comfy feel with a nice bar. It’s not so big, but it’s ok the experience is what matters. We allowed the bartender to choose all of our dishes and they were divine. All the fish was extremely fresh and their take on a miso soup is abit different, but was so nice and soothing. He let us try two different wines I personally enjoyed the orange wine it’s different, but a good balance of dry with some sweet.

I was in communication with Rosella who showed a level of empathy that was truly appreciated during a moment of stress/chaos. Food:
• Spicy Apples - Wasn't sure what to expect when I saw this on the menu and was extremely pleasantly surprised when I took a bite. The combination of apples, spice, cashew salsa, yogurt, and dill somehow created a flavor/ texture experience unlike anything I had ever tried before.
Definitely start with this dish!
•Spicy Avocado Roll - Even though this roll sounds simple, it packs so much flavor.
•Spicy Tina Roll - This is one of their "Big Rolls" and is like the best quality spicy tuna roll you could ever imagine with melt in your mouth tuna, avocado jalapeño, herbs, and spicy mayo.
•Sushi & Sashimi - I love Rosella's selection of local sashimi to explore! We had the fatty bluefin and the Spanish mackerel and they were both incredible!
Laksa & Lobster - This spicy and savory soup with shrimp, lobster, and mushrooms was incredible!
Drinks:
One of my favorite parts of Rosella is definitely their beverage list that focuses on local wines. I tried a wonderful skin contact Riesling from AmByth Estate and some insanely good wines from Ryme Cellars including their Fiano and the "Hers" Vermentino.
Rosella also has a great sake selection and we got to try the Tajima Fuku Chitose "Happy Owl" Yamahai Junmai, which went super well with the laksa!

Visited the lovely Rosella in the East Village for the first time in a while and tried some of their incredible new menu items. I am always impressed by the creativity and flavor in each dish here and the hospitality is impeccable. If you haven't made your way to Rosella yet, add it to your list!

Pretentious, money grab. Got a last minute reservation and cancelled 1.5 hours before my seating and was charged $75 despite the restaurant having an extensive waitlist each night. Food is overpriced, save your money for better value in the area

My group was pretty disappointed with the food here, but we didn't order as much sushi as I would have liked. That said, what we ordered aligned with what appears to be the focus of the menu, that is the restaurant's 'takes' on different dishes, none of which really did much for us.

Service was great though!

I wanted to love Rosella and indeed it was very fresh and very tasty but certainly not extraordinary. The expertise, precision and care simply wasn’t there on the sushi. It was thrown together, cuts were sloppy, rolls were unevenly cut, rice falling off. Again, tasty fish and super friendly but a high end nyc sushi experience this was not.

Cool buzzing spot. Found the nigiri better than the big rolls - fish was overpowered by other ingredients in these. Prawn was the pick of the nigiri. House salad was great. Best dishes of the night were the fish sausage slider and the prawn laksa. Wine list is great and it’s a fun crew that looks after you. Not on the cheap side but worth a try if you can snag a booking!

Good food. Very inventive. Sometimes the flavorings overpower the fish a bit. The favorites at my table were the farro miso soup and the cucumber salad, followed by the tuna sushi. The lobster California roll was not living up to our expectations.

5 stars for top service, everyone was very kind and knowledgeable
3 stars for average sushi IMO, classic places like Yasuda blow this place away.
5 stars for a cool vibe, in the East Village.

My second time here and have to say it surpassed the first (which was also exceptional). The team here are some of the best I have experienced, super thoughtful to their guests and seem to genuinely enjoy what they are doing. The food is fresh, delicious and adventurous, there was nothing we tasted that we didn’t love. Thank you and looking forward to my next visit. Highly recommend

The food is absolutely some of the more delicious and consistent Ive had. The space is fun, wine selection covers a wide variety of small and local producers. Must try their house salad. jeez.

Great food. Terrible music.

I really enjoyed the inventiveness of the menu, but the music was obnoxious, intrusive and aggressive. It's a shame as it killed the mood and enjoyability of the meal and just made my group want to get the hell outta there. Just turn the music down or make it more chill.

While I appreciate the effort put into the meal by the team at Rosella, in my opinion, it falls short.

As someone who has dined at Michelin-starred Japanese restaurants all over the world, including Yasuda, Nakazawa, Sushi Noz, Nakaji, Ginza Iwa, Shiro's Kashiba, and Sushi Sho, I know that omakase is a blind tasting menu that should showcase the chef's mastery of ingredients and flavors. Traditionally, edomae-style omakase includes a wide variety of garnishes such as finger limes, fresh yuzu, perilla leaf tempura, gold flakes, aged baby watermelon, wagyu, uni, truffle, and foie gras shavings. For seafood, one can expect abalone, horse mackerel, multiple courses of toro, baby shrimp, multiple courses of uni, octopus, razor clams, monkfish liver, and giant scallops. If you're looking for a true omakase establishment, I would suggest dining at Sushi Sho to truly understand the craft of edomae-style omakase.

In comparison to a traditional Japanese omakase, Rosella charges a similar price but features domestic and sustainable fish, like mussels, and doesn't offer expensive garnishes. However, in omakase, the sushi rice is just as important as the quality of the fish. The rice should be prepared in small batches and the composition of the rice vinegar, sugar, and premium rice used should vary based on the cut of the sushi. Unfortunately, Rosella used the same batch of sushi rice throughout the night that was lacking in sugar and contained too much rice vinegar, throwing off the balance of salt, acid, and fat. This impacted the overall taste and presentation of the pieces, with my least favorite being the Louisiana stew inspired piece.

In addition, a traditional omakase can last up to three hours, with the chef remaining at their station from beginning to end, never turning their back on the customer. At Rosella, the "master" left in the middle of making a piece of sushi for us without a word, leaving our sushi sitting on the counter for a few minutes. This felt unprofessional and made the dinner awkward overall.

Two words: clean eating.

Perhaps it is because the fish is sourced right from our waters here in the US, but I found the rolls to be very light and easy to eat. Obviously it’s not omakase or anything extremely unique, but thought the place was a nice hidden spot that serves solid sushi.

Note: service was excellent!

Over the course of the omakase tasting menu, we enjoyed 15 unique dishes which at worst were delicious and at best changed my perspective on how food can make someone feel. Just the texture of the warm, soft, fresh salmon warrants a visit. For a special experience with extraordinary Japanese food in a cozy restaurant in East Village, this is the spot. Reservations are required about a month in advance as there are only six seats per night for the omakase.

It is definitely not your average Japanese menu. The wine selection is also locally produced and quite tasty. The servers were well knowledgeable, regarding the menu for both food and beverage. They also went above and beyond to make sure plates and cocktails were well-suited.

Best of the best of the best. My favorite spot for sushi, hands down. Rosella is a new school spot doing fun and delicious things with North American sourced fish. The food and the service are consistently excellent, as is the ambiance - it's fun, and hip, and intimate, and the playlist is fire. They give great recommendations, and will curate a menu for you if you tell them what you like - I usually like to be in the driver's seat for the ordering process, but trust me when I say that this place is so much fun when you let them take the wheel. The wine/sake list is also amazing, and my favorite spot to sit is actually at the wine counter (low key an even better time than the sushi bar, IMO) - the sommelier, James, is incredible, and I always end up trying something new that I love

Learned about this establishment from Eater and loved the thoughts about nontraditional sushi. A very different vibe from the orthodox edomae sushi restaurant. Foods are good and you might also have the chance wining some bonus dishes (we were blessed to have the spicy avocado little roll and mushroom sushi gifted from the chefs). You should come if you don't mind try something that is not ordinary.

Unique sushi experience with US and New York focused fish. The restaurant offers multiple courses, nigiri, rolls, and desserts.

I have been twice and have really enjoyed the ceviche each time. Incredible flavorful. The Nigiri is excellent and some cuts are different. For example you won’t find bluefish at many places.

The large rolls are big and filling. The preferred the spicy tuna over the AvoCaho. The lobster one is extra but give it a shot.

The cantaloupe sorbet and carrot cake are both great options for dessert and highly recommended. They also have a nice selection of wines, sake and beer. They had two teas for purchase.

You will probably spend 100+ pp. the vibe is cool and it is intimate. Sit at the sushi bar for nice interaction with the chefs. There are similar prices sushi places that will give higher quality fish form nigiri or sashimi but rosella makes up for it in the options and creativity. Highly recommend.

Very nice sushi place, with American sourced seafood. Showed up at opening to get a walk-in seat, and servers were kind while I waited for my friends who were delayed on the train. In the mean time I was sampled multiple sakes before choosing one in particular that was brewed right in Brooklyn. First time having Barramundi and I decided to have two pieces along with trout, tuna, and their bagels on Hudson roll. I personally do not like shrimp but their shrimp is also great, those with me ordered them and loved it the most.

Least favorite omakase restaurant I've ever been to. Most of the dishes were way too acidic and almost all of them you could barely taste the seafood and felt very wasteful. Unique does not always mean good and their take on SEA flavors was done okay but not great as someone who grew up eating Vietnamese and Thai food very regularly. Also it is cool that they use local fish but the flavor and quality of it really was just average (maybe that's why they try to drown it out?). Laksa was also quite lackluster. Honestly, out of the entire 15+ course meal there was not even one that thought was done well, all were okay at best. For this price, I REALLY expected better.

Sushi Experience №200

Superb! The staff is very welcoming, the decor is playful and clever, the atmosphere is fun but not overwhelming, and the food and drink is truly amazing. I had a couple glasses of delicious sake from Brooklyn Kura and my companion had an Avec soda they recommended and an impromptu mocktail they whipped up, all of which was terrific. Of the food, the spicy tuna roll was truly a revelation — unlike any other I’ve had — the miso soup was strikingly rich, the ceviche was very original, the peach/daikon/carrots/tomatoes/greens salad was very clever, and the nigiri were excellent. In particular, the striped bass nigiri was delicate but flavorful, the smoked steelhead trout let the fish shine through with just an overtone of smoke (same for the smoked uni), and the ribeye nigiri was perfectly seasoned to bring out the complexity and delicacy of the meat — I ended up ordering extra pieces of the bass and trout because they were so good. Little touches like the lighter soy/dashi/mirin blend they use for maki and the aged soy they use for sashimi heightened the experience.

I cannot recommend Rosella highly enough. I can’t wait to go back to try the omakase.
