A pricy but excellent meal. Chef Shion really has his pulse on the seasoning of his dishes. Definitely the best Aji and Ankimo I've ever had and I'm not much of a fan of mackerel. I actually preferred it to the otoro bite which itself was also excellent.

Minor point of annoyance, when I visited, there was a patron who was visibly drunk, speaking at the top of his lung, and making facetime calls (on speaker phone) to his mom/wife throughout the entire dinner. I think the staff should have really intervened here to keep the space comfortable for the rest of the guests. It really took away from an otherwise incredible experience.

As a solo diner I sometimes get sat at the end of omakase counters but here I was dead center with chef which was much appreciated. Highlights were the kawahagi, monkfish liver and ebi shrimp. And also the tamago which can be the same at so many spots stood out here. I think it was soaked in something

I recently visited Shion, eager to enjoy what was supposed to be a memorable omakase experience. Unfortunately, my evening quickly turned into a disappointing and frustrating ordeal. Upon arrival, I was seated after the omakase course had already begun—a detail I was neither informed of nor even hinted at by the staff or management.

Instead of adjusting the experience accordingly or at least explaining that I had missed the start, they simply began bringing out appetizers. It felt as if these dishes were a way to fill the table and the time but, in reality, they did not resemble the authentic omakase sequence that I was expecting. I was under the impression I’d receive the full course, but as the evening wore on, it became clear that I was not. Each appetizer felt like an afterthought rather than part of the carefully curated progression one would expect from an omakase.

What’s most troubling, though, was the lack of transparency. When I finally inquired about the course progression, I was told I had indeed missed the start. Yet, I was charged the same price as if I had been served the complete experience. This left me with a feeling of deceit, as it seemed the manager deliberately made no effort to inform me beforehand or to adjust the pricing to match the incomplete service I received.

This experience was very sneaky and far from the elevated, authentic dining experience the restaurant’s reputation would suggest. To anyone considering dining here, beware of such lack of transparency in service—it simply isn’t worth the cost or the hassle, and Neither was the food!

Pictures of food don't do this place justice. Everything they serve is just better than a mid-level sushi place. Fresher taste, crisper texture, more on-point seasoning. The double uni plate and crabmeat in its shell are notable. As well as the "kamatoro" which has a definite shape on the plate but melts immediately in my mouth even more than the otoro. We can see why they charge what they charge. On a side note, we were stiffed with having to pay for 3 bottles of water. No idea how they kept track because the hostess used the same bottle for all diners.

probably worth 200 dollars. not even comparable with anything similarly priced or even above 300 dollars. eel is full of bones, crab has shell in it, fish has no flavor, only good thing is uni.

TLDR: Pricey but if you're looking for purist sushi - this is a great choice. Chef Shion does everything solo and his craftsmanship is something to witness over the course of your meal. Not just the nigiri - the ostumami are very memorable as well. Save it for a special occasion but the question is - is it worth it? Yes, it is.

Shion was a place I had heard about for a long time and I did have the chance to dine with him at Amane. This is many years ago but he's clearly honed his skillset because this was a very enjoyable meal.

Much more traditional than most places, there are a ton of otsumami (starters) followed by the nigiri course. Many of the apps are very unique and super flavorful. I especially enjoyed all the different cooked fish plates with different styles. The uni tasting was great where there were three types of uni, including one from his hometown.

The shari (as expected) was excellent, nice texture and chew - not too salty/sour. All the nigiri was excellent, the aji and kohada were especially noteworthy. Just the flavor profile, the mouthfeel, the bite - outstanding. The standout for me was the temaki. It's what really blew me away. This is the cylinder-shaped hand roll and it's packed nicely with a very fatty tuna mince. What's different is he uses chopped raw onion, which balances this out so beautifully. I would put this in the top 3 hand rolls I've ever had, might even be the best omakase temaki.

This a traditional place and definitely on the more serious side. Very light music, piano jazz as is typical. If you're looking for a "vibe" - this is not the place. If you're hear to really bask in sushi perfection, then you've found the right one.

My friend and I were looking forward to dining at the restaurant. The food was great especially the hairy crab dish. However, I could not say the same for the service. The server named Kelly was quite condescending and had snarky comments here and there through out the dinner.
I placed my handbag on the counter and I was asked to place it underneath the counter. Her reply was we do not ALLOW it on the counter. Understood but would have been better if she had said something like… for your dining experience we highly prefer that your handbag be placed underneath the counter? Most high end places have very convenient and considerate placement for handbags. This place I couldn’t even find it and frustrated Kelly had to help me with it. Felt like a naughty school girl being scolded by a teacher-nun at boarding school.
Before our omakase began, the server was taking drink requests. First asked if we wanted flat or sparkling. Never mentioned the flat water will be bottled. We said flat and came with bottled water. A small flat bottle was $30. We had no idea but at the end of dinner we drank $60 worth of water. I thought restaurant ask if a customer would like another bottle? The water bottle was never placed at our counter so we had no idea how much we had left in the bottle. For the alcoholic drinks we wanted low key carafe sake since we were not heavy drinkers. We were looking at more reasonable selections. But she came over and asked if we needed assistance in selecting one. We pointed at a group of selections with prices more reasonably and asked to pick out from that selection. She went to another page the most expensive section and picked one out of there. She knew I was entertaining a guest and put me in a very awkward position.
My husband made the reservation and he mentioned something about the dinner being charged to his credit card reminded me not to be late. I assumed that it was prepaid omakase. Kelly came over and asked for the payment. I just asked her if it was prepaid. I mean I understand her frustration with some confused customer like me. Once I realized it wasn’t prepaid I quickly took out my card. But Kelly had to mention, “How would I know your husband?” The dinner was over $1,000 for two people I mean for that price may be we can do without condescending Kelly? FYI the bathroom needed repair and cleaned.

Without doubt the quality of the products is very good and cannot be faulted but for a one Michelin star restaurant at $480 per person this place had no wow factor for us either in terms of the presentation of the food or the atmosphere of the restaurant and to be honest was an anticlimax (especially when taking into account this was a special birthday dinner which the restaurant was informed about but of which there was absolutely zero recognition). If you want white wine by the glass you’re limited to a single choice. Service was correct without being friendly. The meal ended quite abruptly with a single dessert of tamago swiftly followed by the bill being presented, no offer of a tea or anything else.

Dining at Shion is an intimate and unique experience. The course integrates specialties from a wide variety of cities across Japan including chef Shion's hometown of Kumamoto. One can tell that he sources his seafood carefully and personally. There were many dishes that I hadn't seen in an omakase course before. I liked that he gave us the uni tasting earlier in the evening (I often find that chefs save it for later on when I'm too full to truly enjoy it). Shion is a friendly and informative chef. Each dish came with a thorough explanation and he crafted everything with care and detail. After our meal he was happy to take a photo with my partner and me. In a city where middling quality omakase has had a recent boom, Shion's quality and prestige stands out, and its high price tag is, in my opinion, justified. I will be back on a future special occasion.

Our menu for the evening included the following: kue and sawara sashimi, grilled kanpachi with julienned shiso leaf, ankimo, Hokkaido hotate on nori, kegani with vinegar sauce, crispy amadai with grated daikon, a full flight of nigiri (shima aji, hirame, amaebi, hon maguro akami, chiaigishi, chutoro, aori ika, kama toro aburi, Hokkaido uni, anago, nakazumi, kamasu, kajiki), a hon maguro temaki, and a very unique custard tamago.

There is an honest simplicity with the otsumami he serves; there are only a few components for each appetizer.

A blend of non-Yokoi akazu is used as he doesn't like the dark color of the Yokoi brand. The rice is allowed to rest for approximately an hour after the akazu solution is applied to the steamed rice. I would say that the shari is somewhat stickier in the center but still has a distinctive feel of the individual grains once you start chewing the nigiri. The flavor imparts a sweet acidic flavor that is distinctive but not overly aggressive or overpowering; some may prefer this over shari that is offered at establishments like Noz and Yoshino.

I would say the personal standouts for me during the nigiri flight were the hon maguro akami, chiaigishi, kama toro aburi, and Shirokawa kajiki. Basically, all the red meat "akami" selections that were offered for the evening. They each provided distinctive umami and textures paired with the optimally warm shari. The hon maguro akami was served with an otoro paste on the underside of the neta along with the wasabi, which I found interesting and unique; a first for me personally. The kama toro aburi made the grains of the shari more individualistic and pearl-like due to the heat and melting fat of the toro. The hon maguro temaki was quite large, the biggest I've seen amongst the elite omakase experiences I've had. There are various diced cuts of the hon maguro, not only finely chopped otoro; there is also diced onion inside the temaki which provided a pungent and crisp contrast to the savory diced bluefin tuna. It probably ranks as the best temaki I've tasted, the volume and heft of it definitely added to the tasting experience.

As far as techniques are concerned, I noticed a few that should be noted.

Uino-san very carefully scored the aori ika, with a very fine crosshatch then cutting the squid slab into 3 thin strips for each neta. If a squid varietal is not thoroughly scored, it can be more difficult to chew as the texture is firmer than that of a fish. The nigiri itself was very aesthetic and pleasing to the eye. The neta of the kajiki (striped marlin) was comprised of 3 separate slabs combined into one. Scoring in general is an aspect that is very apparent in his neta; either 3 or more cuts on a bias or parallel to the length of the neta or a wider crosshatch to help with the draping of the neta over the shari. I believe this is necessary as Uino-san forms the nigiri with fewer movements than what I've seen with other itamae.

Uino-san works with intention and deep focus but is also willing to converse with his guests, even though I was the only guest during the turn that was primarily focused on his food and movements. Shion 69 firmly has its place amongst the finest omakase that New York City has to offer.

My fiance and I came to Shion to celebrate our anniversary.

We made reservations for the second seating at 8:30, so our start time was slightly delayed. We were seated after 9pm. We were really looking forward to this experience as we have been wanting to come here for years.

As soon as we were seated, the party next to us was having a conversation with the chef about the menu for the night and the different fish they offer throughout the year. My fiance ordered a glass of wine and I ordered tea to go along with dinner. The waitress explained to me that my order of tea came with a total of three cups.

The customers to the left and right of us ordered sake and champagne.

It was a little bit of a delay before we received our first course, so my first cup of tea was finished before we even ate. I found it strange that my cup was never refilled or that the staff didn't offer me another cup.

As the plated courses began to come out, I would strategically place my finished dish next to my empty tea cup. This happened about 4 times. I was hoping to get a refill, but again I was never poured or offered a cup. I even saw the waitresses tippy toe over to see that my cup was empty!!!!!

I watched as they refilled champagne, sake, and water for other customers.

My fiance finished her glass of wine and it wasn't until 3 courses later (with an empty glass on the table) that they offered her another drink. At this point, I had to get the waitresses attention to ask for my 2nd (out of 3) cup of tea!

My fiance and I were starving throughout the night. The party of 4 next to us was receiving additional courses compared to us (& no, this was not due to dietary restrictions). I think these additional courses overwhelmed the kitchen and chef, so the food was taking longer than expected to be served. At other places we have been, additional dishes are offered at the end, not during the omakase experience.

As the night went on, the chef started to drink with the other customers. It's great to see a chef that could interact with the customers, but it shouldn't affect the dinner. As the nigiri came out, each course would have a weaker and weaker hold on the rice. It got to the point where nigiri began to fall apart before I could get in my mouth!

A few drinks later, the chef accidentally served my fiance, SKIPPED ME, and then served the person next to me. He apologized after doing so.

Halfway through dinner, I finished my second cup of tea and was never offered or poured my last cup of tea that I paid for.

My fiance finished her second glass of wine and wasn’t offered an additional drink.

Before the last course, I got up to use the restroom. I folded my napkin into a square. I came back to my seat to see that my napkin was not refolded. I would like to make it clear that I do not NEED my napkin to be folded into some fancy triangle. This is just a point to prove that we were neglected by the staff during our time there.

We go to Omakase for the great food, the performance of the chef, the intimate experience, and the service. These expectations were not met.

We were greeted “happy anniversary” from the waitresses as we were leaving. Not in the beginning, not with a card, not with a candle…..as we were leaving.

I had to keep apologizing to my fiance that we just went on a bad night. Maybe it was the party next to us? Maybe it was the alcohol that the chef was drinking? Maybe it was just a bad night. Either way, this is not the experience we were looking forward to, and it wasn't acceptable.
We will not be returning or recommending this place to our friends.

FYI: my fiance and I are experienced customers. We have dined at some of the greatest sushi restaurants in NY including Ito, Noz, Nakazawa, Yoshino, Amane, Icca, and Masa.

The Best Sushi Outside of Japan.
I have dined at every high-end sushi restaurant in the city, and there is something truly special about Shion. The precision with which each bite is prepared at this Zen 8-seat counter is unmatched, and the fish is so fresh that the guest is allowed to simply enjoy it in its purest state, without having to rely on excessive garnishes. Only freshly grated wasabi is used, and the carefully prepared rice complements the fish instead of overpowering it.

Many of the menu items are flown in directly from the chef's hometown in Japan, so there is a sense of intimacy that accompanies a meal here. Attention to detail and quality of ingredients are the Hallmarks of Shion 69 Leonard, and I wouldn't be surprised if it joins the coveted 3-Michelin Star circle in the near future.

It was very mediocre at best. There was not a single course that had anything special about it. I feel badly for them at sone level as it’s clear they are struggling. I think their towel warmer was broken so we get cold towels at the start of the meal. If I ad paid about 50-75 per person, I would have felt that was fair value. Sorry I cannot be more positive.

Nothing is fancy, over the top, and glitzy, but every bite, every dish, and every piece of nigiri is just about perfectly balanced, deeply rich in flavor and texture, absolutely fresh from the best possible ingredients. The food was very good but you expect excellency at this price point. Also as another guest commented, there are items off the menu that you can add later, like a $68 uni that chef says is the best… how can this not be included in the omakase? Uni was excellent but overpriced. The menu felt short to me, I expected 4-5 pieces more of sushi.

If only food is 5 stars. But for me opinions should be 1 or 5, so they are helpful to others.

Shion 69 Leonard Street is a Michelin-starred, traditional and intimate Edomae-style sushi-ya headed by Amakusa-born and Tokyo-trained Executive Chef Shion Uino, that's off the splash page website. This was our first Michelin Star restaurant let alone sushi-omakase style. So we went full tilt. We started with a Japanese Whiskey, and got down to a small sample tasting of sashimi. We had hariy crab, Ahi, sea brim, eel, fire fly squid, mackerel, snapper, trout, hand rolls, scallop, cheek, miso soup, and delicious wine, and an custard for finish.
18- 20 courses. The food is delicate and clean. The bites are presented perfectly, there is nothing overly complicated or beyond flavorful, but it's all so delicious and fresh. This place is pricey like 500 to 800 a person so don't skimp, just say yes. Before dinner started my beautiful companion said to me, "it's like we're always on a date, in the best way possible. Everything we do is special from amazing dinners, to napping on the couch. It's all special with you" we looked at each other and tears began to fall, after some embrace and kisses, we smiled and knew that we have truly been blessed with each other's company, friendship, and love. I cannot imagine life without you, only with you. Here's to us, here's to love, here's to you! Love you ME🖤❤🖤

Everything was good, from service to presentation to food….good but not spectacular.
Bill came to $667 for myself, so wasn’t cheap and wanted spectacular for this price point. Because you are getting close to Masa price levels.

Shion 69 Leonard:

There are many – many (MANY) – sushiya in New York City that offer an Omakase.

But there are only a few that get whispered around the NYC culinary scene. Only a few that can be the celebratory meal if you have $300+ to spend (or $600 in the case of Masa). Only a few that are in the rarefied atmosphere where you’ve forgotten what most sushiya even look like (if you think I forced that sentence as an homage to Layer Cake…you’d be right. Watch that movie).

69 Leonard Street has become one of those.

And yet, despite the fact that I (sometimes) live close by and workout (not to brag) across the street, I’d never been since it opened 4 years ago.

Until now.

69 Leonard hasn’t always been the name. It actually opened in Janaury 2017 as Ichimura under the direction of veritable legend Eiji Ichimura. Ichimura had left his closed eponymous sushiya at Brushstroke, which I reviewed in 2012 and credit for starting the sushi revolution in NYC (alongside the popularity of Jiro Dreams of Sushi and the rise of Instagram, of course).

By June 2017 however, Ichimura had moved on, replaced by Derek Wilcox, an NYC native with plenty of experience at acclaimed restaurants in Japan.

At the renamed Shoji at 69 Leonard St., Wilcox spent much of his 3+ year tenure slinging a hybrid of kyo-kaiseki and edomae-style nigiri at the Omakase counter, all to great acclaim. He left earlier this year to move to Los Angeles in what owner Idan Elkon tells me was just a natural endpoint given the pandemic.

Easily one of the best and most interesting Japanese restaurants in NYC. Given the 10+ years of training of the chef did in Kyoto and Tokyo and his approach to the menu, the experience here is truly unique. It is a fusion (in the best sense of the word) of kaiseki/kappo & sushi, incorporating supremely high quality imported Japanese and domestic ingredients, all prepared impeccably using deceptively sophisticated techniques to showcase the seasonality of the ingredients. The composed dishes that begin the meal are always delicious, intriguing and a sensible progression leading up to the sushi. The classics of Edomae sushi are venerated here and executed with precision (rice is always spot on, amazing kohada, ask for geso at the end). Don't come here if you want a trough of toro topped with uni, "wagyu" beef, caviar and gold leaf. Do come here if you want to experience why so many chefs and foodies are obsessed with Japanese cuisine, because this is a great embodiment of it. I always learn something new when I eat here.

Good sushi (expensive). The chef makes great sushi but the service and support from his team makes the dining experience lacking. Maybe it was a stressful night (new years eve) but there were two plates dropped. The chef had to call for shrimp and shari multiple times but had to enter the kitchen himself after being ignored. Another customer asked one of the support staff what was in the shabu shabu soup appetizer and the support staff didnt even know. Lastly despite there being seatings at specific hours, four of us started first and then the rest. Because the chef had to make ours (~20minutes ahead) and the other party’s, the pacing for sushi was off. I think this place has a lot of potential if it roughs out these corners.

Excellent Manhattan fine omakase experience. I've been to most of the high-brand omakase spots in NYC, LA and several Michelin starred restaurants in Tokyo and Hokkaido. Shoji at 69 Leonard delivers on all fronts. Fish quality, variety and presentation is exceptional. The service is careful and the environment is welcoming. Chef Derek and staff are hitting on all cylinders and I highly recommend.

I wouldn't be surprised if this place closes down in a few months. Their only interest is money and clearly not the customer.

I had a reservation for 4, but had to cancel very last minute as my mother was admitted to hospital. I understand the cancellation policy, but any reputable business would show some compassion given the circumstances, but not this place. The manager was rude, unsympathetic and clearly had no interest in helping me, just billed me $1K.

I returned to the UK with my mother for 2 weeks and then came back to the US and called the restaurant to see if any exception could be made. I was told had I called within 2 weeks, then perhaps I may have been able to re book. I explained I had been in the UK and this wasn't possible, and perhaps if I was told this at the time of my cancellation then some friends could've dined at my expense. I was promised a call back the next day. It never came.

A week later I then reached out again and was told this was the policy and should I wish to re book, I would get 25% off the meal, hmm..

Clearly a restaurant on its last legs. Be warned.

I made a reservation on their app and they call back a few hours later saying there was a simultaneous booking. What is point of an app when stuff like this happens and why do I have to cancel and not the other party? It’s obvious they were playing favorites. WILL NEVER COM BACK!!! Had an incredible meal at Shoji last night. The omakase meal was exceptionally well executed by Chef Derek Wilcox -- who spent years training in Japan -- with impeccably-fresh sushi, sashimi and other thoughtfully-crafted dishes. Dining at Shoji feels like dining at a friend's home -- there are only 12 seats -- and the chef takes time to craft the experience for each diner. The ambiance, music and comfortable pacing all added to a wonderful experience. Was also very impressed with the very kind owner, Idan Elkon, who spoke with us after our meal. Not surprised that Shoji received 3-stars in its recent NY Times review.

The sushi, the prepared dishes and the sake are all outstanding. It is a tiny place with perhaps a dozen seats at a counter with the chef Derek Wilcox preparing sushi before you on a modest slab of hinoki . He trained in Kyoto and Tokyo and his work is as good as any of the top places in NY. T he usual language barrier does not exist so you can explore with him each dish, the sourcing of the sushi (he says he spends most of his time sourcing fish from Japan and elsewhere) and even the provenance of the serving dishes which have their own story. The most engaging experience I have ever had. The night we were there, 2 customers from Japan were also enjoying their evening. Clearly his reputation has travelled.

Take all your preconceived notions of sushi and throw them out the fusuma, because you are about to have your mind blown. The technique, the supreme quality of the fish, and the steadfast respect for tradition while still maintaining creativity, equals the best kaiseki experience outside of Japan.

There are all other sushi restaurants, and then there is Shoji. Chef Derek Wilcox, with his extensive training in the art of kaiseki would probably even contest my categorizing his elegantly-coursed experience as a "sushi" meal - and with good reason. The Shoji meal really is so much more than that.

For context, I went to Ichimura (the Shoji owner's last project), and while the sushi was fine, it doesn't remotely compare to magic Wilcox-San weaves behind the Shoji counter. I have also been to some of the best sushi-yas in Tokyo and Shoji stands up there with them all. Chef Wilcox has access to all of the most awe-inspiring ingredients (all wild, none farmed!), with your perfect bite of kama toro and Hokkaido uni being flown literally across the world to be laid in front of you. All of the classics that are near-impossible to master have been mastered: the poaching of the octopus, the marinating of the mackerel. And then there is the variety that comes with a devotion to seasonality and an unending wellspring of creativity. The menu is never exactly the same. On my last visit, Chef was using "new crop rice," from the first rice harvest of the season, which has its own distinct flavor and texture, and the entire meal was colored by this subtle, welcome change. Course after course, piece after piece, I am always pleasantly surprised; by the composed sashimi courses paired with homemade ponzu, or a cube of perfectly steamed monkfish liver accented with and enhanced by a sliver of pickled pear.

The sushi bar environment itself is minimalistic perfection, with a surprising spaciousness that makes sitting on a stool feel somehow luxurious. And service is impeccable. The pacing of the meal is perfect, and your glass, which can be filled with some truly fascinating sakes off the well-curated menu, is never empty before you're attended to. Also, maybe I've been lucky, but I have never shared a meal at Shoji with anyone but the most interesting of neighbors - artists and impresarios, and, yes, celebrities. This is a meal you want to share with like-minded members of the HOLY-HELL-THIS-IS-AMAZING Food Appreciation Society, and in my experience Shoji's other guests have been enthusiastic members of that clan. Ultimately, if being served by one of the most creative chefs sharpening his knives on the planet in a simple-but-elegant environment means something to you, you HAVE TO go to Shoji. Now that it's been named one of the Top 10 Restaurants in NYC by the New York Times (#3!!), just cross your fingers you can actually get a reservation!!

For 260pp I think there are far better omakase in the city. While the sourced fish may be interesting - the meal itself took way too long- because of the time chef needs to prepare for all 12 people. I do not understand why he does not have a second chef, the food did not feel paced out based on guests, it was based on how much he can get done. Also, I don’t like that he pre- cuts fish and leaves it on the counter for 5-10 minutes at a time, regardless if it is supposed to be served room temperature, I don’t keep my food open on counter.

I will also add that the curtain between back kitchen and sushi bar was very dirty with spots and bleach stains, not a great look. We did not even make it to the final course because we had started st 630 and by 9 we were ready to go- will not be back.

This was a really well put together experience and most importantly, unique and DELICIOUS. Staff were super welcoming and personable when I came in. They introduced themselves and enlightened my friend and I on the experience and the restaurant's dynamics. The owner has a lot of (well-deserved) pride and showed us various aspects of the restaurant and how they put it together - giving us a tour around and showing us what wood, stone, and other materials were used to custom build the restaurant and the various locations around the world that they obtained them from. It is very clear from even the beginning that the magic that Shoji provides goes beyond the food- as it includes even atmospheric elements to contribute to the entire experience.

As for the tasting experience itself, I find it very difficult to describe how unique and creative the entire meal was. Each plate that was served was carefully constructed with various delicate ingredients that transformed the perception of the dish depending on their involvement. The Chef walked us through each plate describing how they were prepared. A few of the pieces were not prepared traditionally, which added to the uniqueness of the experience. I left feeling like I was able to enjoy pieces that would be not only difficult to find on a menu in many places, but also that I wouldn't be able to find the technique done elsewhere - making our dinner there a truly special event. Many of the items served were rare or only in season in Japan for a small period, which also left me happy to have been able to try it but also excited to come back as the plates change with the availability of the delicacies. The various wines served throughout the meal also complimented the plates and it again, became clear that this was carefully constructed to provide a sophisticated art to us as diners. Everything was beyond delicious and the only downside is that I cant dine here every time that I'd like Japanese.

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in NYC, and I wish I could eat here every week!

The seasonal omakase menu is a blend of kappo kaiseki and Edomae sushi, and it is truly seasonal as some items may only be available for a few days or weeks. The fish sourcing here is stellar, and Chef Derek, who trained for 15+ years in Japan (both Kyoto and Tokyo), knows how to use them in perfect harmony with other ingredients.

I went for the 4th time this week, and Chef Derek was demonstrating even more of his skill showcasing amaebi in a hot sashimi style and then using the broth it poached in for a stellar chawanmushi later in the meal. Both were some of my favorites of the prepared dishes. And then there were so many favorite nigiri pieces: Sumi-Ika, Aji, Jabara Toro... I mean, I could just list them all, they were so good!

The sake and wine list is also interesting, diverse and well-priced which makes for an all-around wonderful meal. Check out more on my IG: @cy_eats

Without a doubt, in the top tier of ingredient quality and skill level of NYC sushi restaurants and for that matter, all of the US. Don't expect endless variety as the fish sourcing is stringent (only wild fish hand picked by an agent in Tokyo) but do expect dishes you won't find outside Japan. Plus, it's about 20% cheaper than most of the other sushiya in NYC in this top tier.

Really good but not worth the $195 per person. You can get a similar omakase, better and cheaper, at other Japanese sushi restaurants in Manhattan.

The chef's style is very traditional Japanese sushi where it's more about the taste of the fish. I felt there wasn't enough sauce on top on most of the pieces (and trust me I'm not the kind of person who eats very salty food or likes to put a ton of soy sauce on my sushi).

The fish they use is very high quality but without variation in the way you prepare each sushi piece, it lacks a sense of layers while you're going through each piece.

I really enjoyed their chawan mushi which was served near the beginning. Sadly, they don't end on a tamago! I was really hoping they would since most traditional Japanese omakase do.

For dessert - make sure you get the emperors dessert! Its refreshing and yes, soy sauce gelato may sound very strange but I really enjoyed everything together. The cake with the ice cream with the red bean and berries. It all goes very well together.

This is a Good place to go for a date ;) nice ambiance
