Wagyu&Sushi
Small and tight Japanese restaurant in UES, exuding ambience of a typical restaurant in Tokyo. We had beef sukiyaki don (for the no-sushi in our party of three,) a grilled mackerel, plus a sushi assortment. Also had a monk fish liver (ankimo,) chef’s special of the day.
Very satisfied with the quality of the food.

Decent Experience at Momokawa
I recently dined at Momokawa, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.
The ambiance was nice and cozy, with a traditional Japanese vibe, and the service was decent—attentive enough, though nothing particularly stood out.
As for the food, it was decent but not great. The sushi was fine, but they didn’t blow me away. The sukiyaki, which I was looking forward to, was decent. Everything was cooked well, but the flavors didn’t quite pop.
One thing to keep in mind is that Momokawa is on the pricier end, which made the “just decent” meal feel a bit underwhelming for the cost. Overall, it’s not a bad spot, but not amazing.

Great experience and awesome service. Highly recommend to get the sukiyaki (soy sauce based) with udon. They use egg as the dipping sauce with beef. Yum!
the sashimi and sushi platter is high quality.
For appetizers: sesame tofu with Uni is very interesting.
The waiter is friendly, knowledgeable and fun to chat with.
We will def revisit.

Service was very helpful and kind. I came during a not so busy time for lunch and was served very quickly. I got the set menu. I thought the shashimi was okay as well as the set of five apps- i felt like flavours were a bit all over the place (taste was good for the most part but my palette was a bit confused). The meat for the shabu shabu was really good though and the whole thing was super filling! I felt like the deserts wasn’t my favourite as well though tbh. Definitely come for shabu shabu or yakiniku 👌

momokawa is an awesome upscale Japanese Restaurant. One of the best dishes you should try is their Sukiyaki, it was literally the best sukiyaki we had.
Sukiyaki is essentially a hotpot but with a soy sauce based broth, it comes with assorted veggie and tofu.
It is a great combo pair with the outstanding
A5 MIYAZAKI RIB EYE. The beef is so tender in texture and has a buttery mouth feel. Dip into an organic egg for extra richness.
The entire experience was fantastic with an excellent service.

Is a total rip off! They require a credit card deposit for a reservation and when we got there, we were the only one in this small yuki restaurant. We went there cause a friend recommend, it was a terrible mistake! The fish we ordered had a horrible smelled, not fresh at all, it was not eatable and the uni i ordered was a old, not fresh either. They charge for one tiny piece of Uni $28.00 each. Food was over price and their seafood was not fresh. For the 2 of us for lunch that day cost over $250.00 with 2 saka only and we left hungry. Very disappointed!

Great food and top notch ingredients. Servers were very attentive and helped with every aspect of the meal. Do book ahead of time...otherwise come early before prime time. And don't forget, with every shabushabu/sukiyaki place, you will smell like whatever you had for hours after the meal.

I absolutely love Momokawa. Traditional Japanese food served in a typically stark and minimalist atmosphere. Everything about this place is authentically Japanese: basic service, basic environment, focus is on serving high quality food. While I can see this being foreign to some American customers, this is how it’s done in Japan. Most importantly the food is out of this world excellent!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Momokawa and it was exceptional! We had a reservation for two people and were seated immediately after arriving. The staff were very attentive to our needs (even helping us with our coats). The ambiance was quiet and peaceful, though a little too dark inside.
We ordered the US wagyu beef sukiyaki for two which was definitely one of the best dishes I've ever had. The sukiyaki was prepared on the table top stove. The broth was amazing, the servers cooked some onions, cabbage, tofu, and mushrooms, along with the wagyu beef. There was egg wash on the side to be used for dipping. We opted for noodles, but you can select rice if you want. We also had the assorted sushi, which was very fresh and high quality fish. For drinks, we had the mango sake cocktail which was also very good.
Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience. The prices were on the higher side but definitely worth it in my opinion. Will likely be back again to try other dishes.

The food is good but the service is such a bummer. They start slowly trying to kick you out around 9:15 so they can get lock up and leave the moment it closes at 10. They’ll flip the chairs onto the tables around you while the restaurant is open and you’re still eating as a hint they want to leave.
One time they wouldn’t even seat me at 9 for sushi because it was too close to closing.
For the price point and the fact that they expect you to pay a 20% tip despite the service, I just expected a better experience.
However, the food IS good and I’m absolutely delighted when I order a sake from here and they let me choose my own sake cup from a basket of assorted options.

Having seen rave reviews on Xiaohongshu, my friends and I decided to check out this restaurant, were we pleasantly surprised! Their Sukiyaki hotpot was simply fantastic! The set menu includes a variety of options, with fresh and delicious meat choices and a generous selection of vegetables. The sushi was also of high quality, especially the eel sushi—it was outstanding!
And even desserts; the sweet red bean and matcha ice cream were both delightful! Highly recommended!

During my recent visit to Momokawa, I encountered a situation that left me both puzzled and concerned. The food, notably the sukiyaki, although decent, came with a price tag that leaned on the higher side. However, what truly set the tone for my review was not the quality of the food but the billing practices and the perceived service disparity.
Upon receiving our bill, I was surprised to find a mandatory 20% tip added. This practice was unexpected, especially since we were a party of only four, which traditionally does not warrant an automatically included gratuity. The confusion deepened when I noticed that the table next to us, comparably sized, was not subjected to this mandatory tip. This discrepancy led me to question the criteria used for imposing this charge and whether there was an underlying bias at play. While we habitually tip 20%, the essence of tipping lies in its voluntary nature, rewarding service that goes above and beyond. The concern escalates when considering the possibility of prejudice influencing the decision to add a mandatory tip to our bill and not to others.
In conclusion, while the culinary offerings at Momokawa might meet expectations, the overshadowing issues of billing practices and the potential for biased service treatment cast a shadow over my dining experience. I hope this feedback encourages Momokawa to reevaluate their policies and approach to ensure a fair, transparent, and enjoyable experience for all patrons, irrespective of background.

Momokawa is a great upscale Japanese restaurant. The decoration is elegant and beautiful, there are some art pieces in the walls for sell. The service is good, some of the servers are very nice although others are a bit impatient. They made a small mess with the bill but ended up being all correct.
I had a YUZU COCKTAIL which tasted good, pretty much like a yuzu juice, almost no alcohol. For three people, we started with JELLY FISH GHD (Amazing, its crispy and comes with a vinager sesame sauce with cucumber and shittake), ORGANIC AGEDASHI TOFU (comes in a delicious soy sauce and was really tasty, soft and juicy inside), ASSORTED SASHIMI (7 kinds of fish
- scallops are hidden in the picture - It was really fresh and good quality), KAMO REISI (Breast duck with orange), DASHIMAKI TAMAGO (I could have skipped this one), BEEF SUKIYAKI DON with WAGYU (really tasty wagyu, soft boiled egg and some veggies over rice), EEL AVOCADO ROLL (a well done classic), TERIYAKI CHICKEN (chicken was good, served with some "bit hard" green beens and brocoli). I had the HOT ZENZAI for dessert but it was not really my thing, like a sweet bean soup.
Although everything was quite good, I will definetely recommend trying the JELLY FISH, the AGEDASHI TOFU, and the BEEF SUKIYAKI.
Everything was really fresh, the wasabi was high quality, and the sashimi and some other dishes come with miso soup and green salad.

I have been eating here for years. There are many ‘highly-rated’ Japanese restaurants in a ten block radius… I’ve tried them all. But for the price, quality and freshness of seafood, Momokawa is tops. The menu has many options from appetizers, oysters, sushi, sashimi, omakase & shabu-shabu. Plus the sake & beer options compliment the authentic cuisine. The well-informed staff are attentive & fun. You will have a great dinner & great evening here.

Not recommended, not for food lover, not for dating, not for personal health (see pic)
Rotten otoro, soup base with barely any taste other than soy sauce. Took forever to order and get our food…
A $240 experience that only brought us the awkwardness of bumping elbows with the next table and a table so tiny that it couldn't even accommodate the dishes. Moreover, the $5 cola was actually just syrup mixed with water and no refill. The dining environment, freshness of the food, and taste, none of these matched the final bill. The only highlight was the decent texture and flavor of the slices of beef that comes with sukiyaki.

I called earlier to ask if there’s any table tonight at 7:30. The guy picking up the call just said one word “no.” Then I asked if there would be a table available at a later time. He again responded with one word “nine.” I don’t know if it’s just me, but I personally found him extremely rude for no reason. I don’t know why he was giving that attitude, but I hope he’s doing okay with his life. Because of how rude this guy was in the phone call, I would never visit this place—no matter how good the food is. There’re so many restaurants in the city—no need to go to a place that doesn’t even know how to respect people.

The food quality at this restaurant is OK, but the experience was marred by the poor attitude of the front desk receptionist. He was yelling at me at the time I was talking to the lady next to him who was welcoming us. This incident left me feeling disrespected and irritated. Considering that a minimum 20% tip is mandatory, the service provided does not justify the cost.

Taste fine but the amount of food definitely doesn't fit the price. Sushi rolls were in mini size,Cocktails got too high alcohol content and taste badly like alcohol mixed with water.
we waited for first dish about 30 minutes after we made our order.
The only decent part is the Sukiyaki. The taste is quite good, very rich, but still in small quantities.
Also, the walls of the store are easily scratched with frosted particles.

I had an amazing evening at Momokawa, a holistic Japanese restaurant lead by Chef Mie Okuda,
Chef Okudo, with a degree in Nutrition Science and health education, created a holistic, Japanese culinary experience, based on her Philosophy:
“A great meal is not one that just fills you up. A great meal is a journey that returns you to sources of pleasure you may have forgotten, taking you to places you haven’t been before.” Mie Okuda. Chef/Owner
I had an amazing Omakase experience here. An experience that left me so full, I couldn’t eat any more. I know I have to come back and have Momokawa’s raved sukiyaki next time.
An amazing holistic Japanese restaurant. I couldn’t recommend it enough.

We got the Tori Kara-Age, pork sukiyaki and beef sukiyaki. The pork sukiyaki was the most impressive of all, the quality of the meat was really good.
However the waiter made us a bit stressed because he came and asked us what we wanted to order less than two minutes after we sat down. After we told him we were still looking and we were still waiting for another person, he came again within 5 minutes asking the same thing. When he was sending dishes, he spilled some veggies onto the table and didn’t refill them.
All in all, the food is good, but I’m not sure I want to go again because of the service. Of course it could be just that particular waiter that we ran into gave us the bad experience.

Our dining experience here was a complete disaster. It spoiled our Thanksgiving Eve entertainment. From the moment we were seated, there were ongoing issues that really put a damper on our mood. Although this restaurant is known for its sukiyaki, and each table was provided with a basket for their clothes, we were the exception. This oversight made us feel neglected. Our waiter was also in a constant state of disorder; first, he spilled my water, and then later, he spilled the tofu that was ordered by other customers onto me without offering a single napkin for cleanup. Furthermore, the service was incredibly slow. Other customers who arrived after us and also ordered sukiyaki had started their main course, while we were still waiting for our sukiyaki pot, exactly the cooking pot. We had ordered the expensive Miyazaki beef set meal, but the service we received did not match its price at all.
The dining environment was also extremely cramped. We and the adjacent table both ordered sukiyaki, and after adding small side tables for the pot ingredients, guests seated on the wall side couldn’t even stand up to go to the restroom. It's clear that the restaurant prioritized profits over customer comfort.
Ironically, although this is a Japanese restaurant and 90% of the customers were Asian, I felt that the staff were discriminating against Asians. They seemed to pay more attention to a Caucasian couple at the next table, constantly helping them cook their meat and refill their water. Our server only helped us cook the meat once and didn’t even bother to refill our water afterwards. With such service, they had the audacity to include a default tip of 20%, 23%, or even 25% on the bill. It was utterly shameless.

Service is bad. They have the wrong order and they are super slow. They are really booked up tonight but it is still very annoyed to feel like they are not doing their work properly. Taking very long to serve us and we waved at their waiter 3 time, they literally passed by and do nothing.

Momokawa is a cozy restaurant out of heavy foot traffic's way on 1st avenue. My friend and I ordered the sukiyaki set for two with prime ribeye and the sushi combo.
The sukiyaki was the star of the show. The broth was sweet and savory, while the veggies and meat were super fresh.
The sushi combo was decent, but nothing outstanding in my opinion. Some of the fish, like the tuna seemed a little tired out and dull.
The drinks were good. The toki highball was refreshing and lemon is always a great touch for it.
Overall, I would come back again for their sukiyaki and great service.

Momokawa is located on First Ave in the Upper East Side with notably the best Sukiyaki in town. Chef and owner Mie Okuda has a bachelors of science in nutrition science and in the works of a masters in health education. This can arguably be the best combination. Kirin and Suntory draft beers accompanied with their sake appetizers is one way to start your journey here. Their seasonal menu has some delicious authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi that you definitely must try. A pre-oiled cast iron pot on top of a butane stove is set for the miyazaki sukiyaki. It comes with an order of udon or rice to pair with the delicious thinly sliced Miyazaki A5 ribeye. Simmer it in the sukiyaki broth and dip it in the whisked egg for the full experience. The Wagyu immediately melts in your mouth leaving you the most satisfying sensation. Don’t forget to cleanse your taste buds with their mouth watering desserts.

I was craving for Sukiyaki and found this place as one of the most authentic place for it in NYC. We ordered Wagyu Sukiyaki and it didn’t disappoint. Obviously doesn’t live up to the standard of what you will get in Japan, (for example, sukiyaki sauce was rather thinner) but considering that you are in NY, this is probably as good as it gets.
The volume of meat was perfect, since fatty meat can fill you up quickly. I wish to have more tofu and veggies, if possible.
We also got Toro-taku roll and natto roll - Heaven!
Aburi-buri salad is underwhelming, so I advise to skip it.
Overall, it satisfied my Sukiyaki cravings very well.

I had the wagyu sukiyaki. Tender and delicious. The staff was kind and considerate which is always a big tell of what a good restaurant would be like. The food was delicious, staff was super attentive and there was a lot of ownership both in their craft and their customer service. There was a lot of attention to detail with the food presentation too.
The cost was very good compared to everything else I was trying out in NYC. Definitely a must try and this would be my favorite restaurant to eat once a day for future visits. I would try everything else they have next time and plan to only eat there for the lunch and dinner.

We had wagyu shabu shabu, a variety of sushi, sashimi, udon, and beef don. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how fresh the sashimi was - shortly after the meal I felt nauseous.

Went for dinner with my girlfriend and the food was just okay but not bad. The atmosphere was as dead as a door and the service was very difficult to get a hold off. I asked for my drink at least 3 times. To top this experience off our rude waiter ASKED FOR A BIGGER TIP. I don’t care about US culture of tipping. We gave the guy 15 dollars and he literally laughed in our faces.
I, as you can imagine, gave the guy a piece of my mind and said that people don’t ask for tips in restaurants. In addition, I don’t see how he thought that would benefit himself and equal a larger tip. All it has done is equal a bad review and an embarrassing scene in the restaurant for the waiter.
As I said the food is okay but if you read the rest of the reviews, they all have comments on the service and how bad it is.
I would only recommend this restaurant if you like being harassed when the cheque comes and like being scolded by a camp fire burner about 30cm from your chest and am atmosphere that makes a funeral seem like a party.

This place was decent in terms of the food, price and the portions that were served. However what sucked was the service. I guess they were busy with the holidays but everything took a long time and we waited a long time for a checked after asking for it 3 times.
Me and a friend had the fried shrimp, sushi, nigiri combo and the seaweed salad. Everything was pretty good. The fish wasn't the best quality I've had but good enough for the price charged and the amount. We also had the green tea ice cream after that was very good.
Overall this is an authentic Japanese spot on the upper east side. Hope their service improves next time

Taking three points off for the terrible service. We’ve been ignored the whole night. Takes 30 minutes to get the attention of the waiter and ask for cups of water. Every time we wanted to get his attention we have to wave like in the titanic movie, and he still quickly looked away. Even the guests from next table find it weir d and started look around to see what is going on. It didn’t happen only one time, but the whole nights. We asked to checked out, he nodded and didn’t show up in the next 15 minutes. We have two young kids, we don’t have a whole night waiting for someone to do his job. We have to ask another waiter for the check, and he brought it to us in a minute, and asked if we would like to check the check before paying. It made me even more embarrassed. Why are we being threaten like that? Are we being targeted? Are we being intentionally ignored? Not a pleasant dining experience, and would not recommend anyone who does not have a whole night waiting for the waiter try this place.

I made reservation at 20:00, and it’s Christmas Eve, so we arrived at 19:50 little bit earlier, and then we talk to the manager said we have reservation, he told us to sit in the bar first, after that we wait around 10 minutes, during this period of time I saw he lead different 3 groups of people to empty table, and he seems like still not planning to find a table for us, but there is a empty table beside us, so we find the manager to ask why we are still not getting sited, he said”that group of two checked in before us” but what I heard from that group said is group of 2, and they did not have reservation, I have no idea why the manager telling lies and not being honest just because of his misconduct, just getting so disappointed of this restaurant.
(If the restaurant don’t have the ability to take the reservation, I prefer you guys just take walk in, that’s what I think. :) )
Yeah, I waited 12 minutes instead of 2 minutes, and your manager lead those customers who don’t have reservation to the table instead of people who have reservations first, I totally understand your restaurant know how to treat people who have reservations.

We ordered sukiyaki for 2, and some stuff, to be honest, the sushi was bland, and the wagyu tasted good, but it was just the most worthy thing. I don't think other tables gonna be charged 20% tips. But that's fine, maybe it was Thanksgiving... It also is my boyfriend’s birthday so I don't want to judge anybody, but I don't think I will be back...

Ordered food from here very bland , had to put salt on the chicken oyako udon, the sushi was just abysmal, I mean the salmon tasted funky and the tuna had a weird after taste. The quality of the food was lacking and it did not taste fresh at all. Too bad.

VERY good sushi!I tried the assorted sushi entree and the waiter even pointed out each species on the plate. Ambience is beautifully done. The staff is kind and respectful. A real pleasure dining here.

Sukiyaki was great, but the meat option is somewhat limited.

Momokawa reminded me Mc Donalds in Harlem!! Yes , is true!
We went for dinner today at this place. 9:30pm the kitchen closed and 9:40 they started to throw away garbages, a lot of garbages probably 20 bags right next to us !! The restaurant was half full , they opened doors, became so cold inside and garbages non stop btwn the customers !! A lot of garbages!!!
We spend 200$ for 1 hour dinner, for to leave the place almost running ..
Food 6/10 , prices $$$$
Ambience 6/10 , service 7/10
Garbages 10/10

Female waiter was rude, made us waited 45 minutes to order (that is after we were seated), another 40 minutes until the food came, and 20 minutes just to pay! I had to bring my bill to them. It wasn’t even that busy. For the price they are charging, the service was ridiculously bad. I spent ~ $350. Food wasn’t even good as everything was too salty. If service is bad, at least have good food. I would not recommend. I walked out of the restaurant half hungry and annoyed.

Authentic Japanese restaurant located in UES. Price is a bit higher but reasonable for the food freshness and quality. Staffs are friendly. Highly recommended for those love sushi, sashimi and sukiyaki.

I’ve eaten at most of the elite Japanese restaurants in NYC and
Momokawa is by far the best.
The Wagyu and sashimi are always top quality and extremely fresh. Owner, Mie Okuda and her staffs are very accommodating and knowledgeable with the entire menu. It’s not surprising that many of her patrons have followed her from her previous venue on 28th street. Really enjoyed their omakase sashimi/sushi as well as Sukiyaki and Shabushabu! Cannot wait to go back!!

Great place for sukiyaki. Wagyu beef is superb. I went several times with friends throughout years with various friends before writing this review. Glad to see it still holds (still miss our hakata tonton in NY)

Momokawa offers a top-notch sukiyaki experience in the city. I tried their full-course sukiyaki meal and every dish was fresh, flavorful, and on point. What amazed me was their attention to detail in every aspect of the restaurant: the food, service, and ambience. I highly recommend this place for a date.

It has been so long due to COVID 19! Yesterday I have visited Momokawa with our guests. The restaurant looked more refined than before and food was great! There were more servers and everyone was very friendly and professional! We really had great time. We had sukiyaki course and it priced very reasonable. I highly recommend it.

The most authentic Japanese restaurant in NYC! I love their Skiyaki and Shabu Shabu yet their Sashimi and Shushi is also 5 star! Food is consistently superb since 28th St. and their service is always good. The ambiance reminds me of my old town in Japan I used to live.

Food poisoning!!
Me and my girl friend had bad food poisoning symptom after eating there for July 4th dinner. Spent $260- ish.
According to my gf, she has the worst stomachache she ever had. She could not fell into sleep and she cannot stand straight.
She has to bend herself. She stayed up for 3 hours during night.
I had 5 times of diarrhea the following day. And I had a very bad stomachache the second day and 3rd day. Today is 3rd and and I still feel weak.
We ate raw egg. We had a dish with half cooked duck. And we had Japanese pot of beef with serve with medium rare beef. Something must be wrong with the food otherwise we won't both get this symptoms.

Solid menu with lots of dynamic dishes. My friends enjoyed their ramen but the toro rolls we ordered were pretty petite

Perhaps the finest sushi in the city. Miyazaki beef melts in your mouth. Thoughtful selection of fine sake and Japanese beer. Attentive service. Even with inflation, prices are still quite reasonable given the amazing quality. Favorite dish: Yellowtail Shabu Shabu. Did you know this place makes its own soy sauce? You feel at home here. Great place to relax with comfort food after a long day. I love this place!

We weren't paying attention but one of us ordered saki and the waiter brought a bottle and opened it. It cost $135 for 1 person. Give me a break.....THE OWNER READ THIS REVIEW, tracked me down and called to apologize. He gave me a significant refund. I HAVE NEVER HAD THAT HAPPEN BEFORE AND WE WILL BE BACK

Ordered Sukiyaki with Miyazaki beef for $175. When the sever brought the beef our first impression was they brought the wrong order. But when we double check with the server, she is very confident this is the Miyazaki beef. Very disappointed, the marble, the taste, it’s not a prime beef. Felt being scammed!! Highly not recommend.

HEFTY price increase! They changed the prices this year, and the difference is huge! Until 2021, Steak Niku Croquette, Tori Kara Age and Tori Kurozu were all $10. Buta Kakuni was $13. Now, in 2022, Steak Niku Croquette is $16 , Tori Kara Age and Tori Kurozu are $11, Buta Kakuni is $17.
They also discontinued some of the dishes, including one of the cod menu I always ordered.
Prior to the price increase I loved this place but this will be my last time to visit. This much change is unacceptable.
I also noticed that they stopped doing lunch specials so no more “deals” at lunch time either.

Great food and service.
One downside would personally be sake serving. It was only a shot worth and was mixed with mango juice. In general, the food was great.

tonight we had edamame, agedashi, oysters, tempura roll, gizzards, miso soup, chicken udon, chicken ramen, hamachi kama and croquette. everything was very very good. the place is really nice inside— it looks terrible from the outside so it’s quite a surprise once you’re inside. the chefs are preparing sushi and small dishes in an open kitchen and they were friendly and funny with my 14 month old. the standout dishes were agedashi, hamachi kama, croquette and the sushi roll. we dined with friends who are notoriously hard to please and they said they loved it and will be coming back. my 14 month old loved the tofu and udon. highly recommended.

The chirashi was so delicious. Momokawa has the best chicken karaage in the city - Kyoto style! So delicious!!! The sushi/sashimi is pricey, but it is worth it. Service has improved vastly and the chef are amazing - highly recommend 💕
