This Omakase restaurant has held a Michelin star for several years, is truly fantastic! 👏
The Japanese chef here possesses superb culinary skills and profound knowledge of cuisine. His techniques are meticulous and refined, and each dish demonstrates a respect for ingredients and attention to detail.
I absolutely love the appetizer combines the exquisite flavors of Hokkaido hairy crab and sea urchin with homemade sesame tofu. The crab has a tender texture, while the sea urchin is delicately sweet and creamy. The sesame tofu is silky smooth, paired with slightly gelatinous okra paste, adding depth to the dish. Tomatoes and black cherries provide a subtle tartness and sweetness, bringing a refreshing taste to the whole dish. It's truly irresistible! 😍 A must-try! 💓
The seasonal tempura also left a lasting impression on me—it includes corn tempura, lightly fried fresh water crab, and fig tempura, served with homemade miso sauce. The corn tempura is crispy on the outside and soft inside, with the sweetness of the corn enhanced by frying. The lightly fried fresh water crab has a crispy exterior while maintaining the juiciness and delicate flavor of the crab meat inside. The fig tempura, which was my first time trying, has a crunchy exterior with the figs inside becoming slightly caramelized under high heat, bringing a unique sweetness and fruity aroma that adds depth and a pleasant surprise to the dish! 💓
And the sushi rolls wrapped with shiso leaves offered a refreshing and unique experience. Each bite was full of surprises ,I just couldn't get enough💓

I stopped going to Omakases after I hit the stone with Sushi Noz, but Kanoyama gets my fire restarted.
Superb service, courses and sashimi are both delivered with novelty and superior qualiy.
4 appetizers + 11 sushi courses with 1 snack + 1 dessert for 195. Seriously nothings beats this cost with this much food combined.
Appetizers
Mushroom and snapper soup
Very umani soup with a bit of Yuzu/lime peels. The seasonal mushroom is with a balance of textural crispy and chewiness.
Tomato salas with yuzu
This is a surprise, as the yuzu jelly is so refreshing and the tomatoes are delicious (juicy, super sweet, and slightly acidic) and deceiving in look. I thought these were melons first.
Fluke with olive oil and millet roes
The fluke tastes like jelly-mochi, and the olive oil adds frangance and millet row adds umani. The umaminess lingers on the tip of the tongue with a slight bitterness from the cured roes. Made me start looking up this on Eataly website to get some for myself.
Mackerel with flower
The soy sauce has a deep flavor deption and the purple flower tastes like cumin, these and the scallion and the ginger balances the fishness, and even the cold temperature plays to the fish’a favor.
Sesame tofu
The super elastic mochi-like sesame tofu topped with crab meat, cantaloupe melon, Hokkaido uni, okra mash, Bonito jelly, abalone meat. My personal fav.
Tempura sweet corn + Fig with miso sauce tempura + batherry
The sweet corn cluster is both savory and sweet, and it is crispy on the outside with inside burst with corn juice.
The miso sauce on fig is heavy and satisfying, I am glad it was only a couple of bites because this delicacy would be a felony to not finish.
The Bayberry tastes surprisingly vanillay, and it marks the finish of the apps.
Not gonna go into details about the Sushi and sashimi courses due to variance, yet I do want to mark a few that were super impressive, order is irrelevant to ranking.
1️⃣Shima-Aji 2️⃣Sweet Shrimp 3️⃣Pickled squash with wasabi 4️⃣Tuna toro 5️⃣Uni 6️⃣ Tuna makithat’s more than 50% impressiveness score out of 11 Sushi courses)
Desserts
Hojicha with lemon and honey to start, then with an orange jelly topped with a blob of whipped cream, kinda taste like a creamsicle.
We were told to go to the table sittings rather than stay at the counter for this course. They paired mint verbena tea and was a great sweet-bitter way to finish.
The service is superb as they switch the utensils and dinnerware really fast. Always fill the drinks promptly, and they talk to you like you are a neighbor. The setting is that the counter is embedded with other regular tables so not a super fine dinning setup but rather homey. I wasn't intimidated to chat with friend and with the chef and my servers.
Chef told us the next month there will be whole crabs, and there will be shiralo in December. Excited, probably will become a regular.

This Michelin-starred spot located in East Village redefines the sushi experience with its impeccable quality and attention to detail. We had the pleasure of trying their sushi special and sashimi special, and the fish was indeed very fresh.
But what really set the night apart was the summer special Nakaochi—bluefin tuna rib sashimi that you get to scrape yourself! 🍣
They provide everything you need to create your own hand rolls: seaweed, scallions, ginger, and wasabi. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience that lets you savor the pure essence of fresh tuna in a whole new way.
The service is amazing. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just in the mood for top-tier sushi, Kanoyama is the place to be.

This restaurant has a rich history, and its prices stand out among high-end Japanese dining establishments. Whether it's sushi or other Japanese appetizers, the quality is top-notch. The experienced chefs provide an excellent Japanese culinary experience. Unfortunately, due to the fast pace of the sushi course, there wasn't an opportunity to capture the sushi, but the quality of all the dishes can be seen from these photos of the appetizers. Regardless of whether it holds a Michelin star, this restaurant, in my opinion, is one of the most outstanding and cost-effective Japanese restaurants in New York.

Kanoyama on the corner of E 11th and Second Ave has been in the Lower East Side since 2010 and earning a Michelin star in 2017. One side of the restaurant is a more casual dining experience while the other side is fine omakase. Inside Kanoyama welcomes you in cozy and friendly environment with impeccable service serving each guest individually and of course, ladies first. Their attention to detail is second to none even providing different types of spoons for different types of food for best results. Behind and in front of Kanoyama’s success is Chef Nobuyuki Shikanai’s genius culinarytechniques. You can taste the finestand freshest ingredients that’s presented. First course consists of fresh watermelon juice which is a palate cleanser. Then you move onto six appetizers then eleven nigiris and a handroll. Finally a tamago egg paired with iced cold lemon tea and a hot tea getting you ready for a crazy dessert. Go on Resy, secure your seats, and get ready to experience a three hour non-rushed journey to Japan with Shikanai-san’s Kanoyama!

I've had sushi at various places in NYC and Los Angeles. I've had sushi in Osaka and Kyoto. The rolls I had at Kanoyama were better than most any sushi I have ever had. The fish is so incredibly fresh and light. Be prepared to pay premium prices, even for NYC, but the food was SO good. The service was friendly and efficient.

This was such a perfect Japanese restaurant ( 日本しょくじところ) once. Now 今、the tempura batter was thick and chunky - not terribly refined, the sushi rolls were cut unevenly, and the rice bowl was filled sloppy and unevenly. The tea was tasteless and too hot for the way too thin ケチ.cups. These would never happen at the old Kanoyama, and certainly never in Japan. Sigh. Still 4 stars as the taste is better than most J restaurants. A FEW YEARS LATER… The tempura, unfortunately was very oily, and the sushi rolls were roughly and unevenly cut. These 2+ the lack of dashi in the sauce reflects that there are not Japanese people in the kitchen. The sushi chefs were certainly not Japanese as well. This may sound extreme, but at these prices, you truly want real Japanese food not ersatz Asian food.

Took 2 hours for them to bring 4 appetizers to my table and we never got our sushi. 2 hours after staring at our finished appetizers, we were told that we had to ASK them to send the sushi but the waiters never checked on my table even when they see us sitting straight staring at them.
The sushi was brought to the table 15 minutes later when we asked to cancel the order. :)

After having gone here many many times pre-pandemic, this was a very disappointing experience. In spite of the late hour and many empty 2fer tables, the 'maitre d' would only seat us in an uncomfortable table next to the door and a large party. He said the other seats had 'reservations.' NONE of those seats were ever filled in the 1 1/2 hours we were there. Server was rude. The $17 sake I ordered was 1/4 of a glass - ummm. Fried chicken was great, but tempura was flavorless and sushi roll choice was nicely traditional and not nicely boring. Sushi itself was fine. The room is 'tired' and tables etc were in bad repair. The backroom bus guy was great. We are big sushi fans but we won't return.

Very disappointing. The servers are staring at screens and ignoring their clients, their very clients who are paying top dollar for decent sushi. It’s a waste of money. If it’s a cheap restaurant with no service and mediocre food… fine ! There’s plenty of those in this city. This one is mediocre with fine dining prices. Sorry, but not for me.

Do take note that the Michelin omakase is only for specific seating times that you must book on Resy - otherwise you’ll get the ala carte menu which isn’t bad but also nothing really special. Service felt a bit rushed too. Overall above average sushi spot to visit!

We had the Sushi/Sashimi for two platter at $115. It was the pedestrian assortment you would see anywhere, including at a supermarket: toro, hamachi, salmon with some cooked shrimp and eel, with one avocado and fake crab roll. The sashimi was mostly the same fish cut small and served on shaved ice, which made it too cold. It was ok quality but nothing special. The waitress paid little to no attention. I won't be returning.

Food 5/10
Very mid sushi. Large slabs but they tasted too fishy, and it wasn’t even at a cheap price either. Lowkey feel like my school cafe could do better. Was quite disappointed with what we got. The gyoza was tasty though. The sushi platter for two came with three rolls and nine nigiris. We had to dip into soy sauce ourselves, but the nigiri came with a little bit of wasabi, but I don’t think it was enough to cancel out just how fishy everything was. The rice was also hard and not very flavored.
Atmosphere 6/10
Typical Japanese restaurant, mid vibes.
Service 6/10
It was fine I guess.

My friends and I came in for dinner on a Friday night. We were able to get seating outside (heated) without a reservation which was a plus, but the wait to get the food was terribly long—over an hour.
We got the regular sushi set, sushi delux set, etc. The food was decent, but because the wait was so long, it was hard to enjoy.
The service was also not great. I suspect this may be because they seemed short staff, which I have empathy for, but it did make the dining experience less enjoyable.

honestly i’ve been coming here for a year and the quality of food and service has gone down severely. i came here a month ago and while i was eating, a cockroach fell on my food and the waiters did not react or help. i had to get rid of the roach myself. i came here today and the sushi i had smelled rotten and was misshapen. on top of that i waited an hour for my food. the waitress was nowhere to be found for that whole hour. not coming here again. i used to vouch for this place and say this was the best sushi in manhattan but i definitely cant say that anymore.

I thought I was in for a treat but was sorely disappointed. The food was nothing special at all. I’ve seen supermarket sushi that was better. We ordered rolls and instead of getting a full roll, that you get everywhere else, it was only 4 small pieces. We had to order more food because we were still hungry. Service (if you could call it that) was minimal. I asked for a small green salad and was told no because it wasn’t included. I said I would pay for it but they refused to sell it to me. There was zero ambiance and didn’t feel particularly clean. It used to be a popular place but now I see why it no longer is. There are so many more great Japanese restaurants where you can have a great meal and service.

We were a group of 3 and we all had the omakase sushi at the counter and it was not worth it. If you order sake, you can pick your own cup, which was fun. Most of the courses were good, but for 2 out of 3 of us, on the same course, got a piece of fish that was chewy, which was a new experience for me for sushi, especially for a fish that isn't usually chewy, and it was unpleasant. When asked about it, the chef said that chewiness was a sign of fresh fish, but it felt more like an end piece or maybe a different part of the fish that usually isn't served as sushi. I would not go back just for this reason, I guess I'm not a fan of fresh chewy fish.
However, the thing that was most memorable about this omakase experience was the cockroach that fell from the ceiling onto one of our hands and proceeds to crawl onto the food, needless to say, we all lost our appetites and didn't continue eating, but since we went through most of the courses before that happened we paid for our meal($300+ per person for food and drinks + tax), however we decided not to tip. The situation was not handled well by the staff or the host, they took the plate away as soon as we got their attention and made them aware of the cockroach, but it seemed like they were more concerned with trying to hide it from the other guest and pretend nothing happened. We were not even offered a replacement piece of sushi for the one that the cockroach touched(not that we would've taken it anyways). There was also no apology or anything remotely close to an apology for the situation, but they did get pretty insistent on a tip and again so when they called one of our cell phones asking about a tip after we had already left.

The toro sushi roll wasn’t very good, I would recommend having the toro as sashimi or nigiri

Cannot beat the sushi quality and fish options here! Really amazing fish. A couple of areas that dampened the experience included service and rolls quality. Every piece of one of our rolls fell apart as we picked it up from the plate - not good. It took forever for a server to take our order but were rushed out of the restaurant at the end/closing time. A+ on the quality of fish but everything else was just ok.

Came for the omakase and we were BLOWN AWAY! The variety of dishes, the creativity, the atmosphere, all amazing. I loved the toro sukiyaki appetizer (very generous portion), the crab, the ebi (which I don’t usually even like that much but this was bomb), and honestly everything.
It’s not as fast paced as some of the “affordable” omakase places in NYC but also not as stuffy as the “serious” sushi institution - a perfect balance. There were so many courses so brace yourself for a long and fulfilling dinner. Definitely not a cheap meal but well worth it compared to other $300+ omakase places
They have a la carte as well which looked great, would love to come back again

I called back at 4:30 was promised a spot and during the time they were taking down my credit card for reservation, they said no more spot and gave my spot to someone else. This is very unprofessional when you're following every rules provided, promised a spot and then they said my spot is given to other. The management staff of this place is a joke..... What can I say about this place? Good food, high prices, poor service. Leaves much to be desired. 2/10, would not recommend. Here's why:
I entered this establishment at 6:20pm and told the female host that I was meeting someone for a 6:30pm reservation. Before I could even say the name on the reservation, the host directed me to a table where a Black woman was seated (I am also Black). The woman and I looked at each other and laughed, suspecting what had happened. The host had probably assumed that since we were the only two Black women in the room, we MUST have been in the same party. That was the first mistake!
I was then seated with my actual party. We were not greeted or welcomed by the server. She simply pointed to the QR code on the table and said "menu." Before even allowing a few minutes to look at the extensive menu, the server came back asking for our order. They were so hurried to take our order that we had to ask about three times for additional time to look at the menu.
After placing our order, the items came out pretty quickly. Again, the workers were in a hurry to remove our plates from the table, even while we were still actively eating! The food itself was good (I tried the Shumai, shrimp tempura roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy scallop hand roll, red bean mochi, and 1 glass of plum wine), but it was nothing to rave about for the price (e.g., ONE hand roll was $16-18).
After we paid our check, we sat at the table for a few extra minutes to finish up our remaining dessert and drinks. The server then blatantly walked up to the table asking if we were finished. In my opinion, this was very rude!
I understand the need to keep things moving so that other guests can be seated. However, shouldn't the goal also be to provide an experience that makes people want to come back? I honestly would have ordered more drinks and paid more tip (we gave 20%) if we weren't rushed out of the place. I do not plan to revisit.

Good value for the quality of the sushi, especially when compared to other options in the neighborhood

Buono, sevizio così così, non so se è stato un caso ma poco accogliente.

2021: Amazing omakase, inventive and delicious.
2022: Re-visited for their omakase menu and was overall disappointed. The price was increased (expected with inflation), but it was much less food compared to last year. Would still recommend, but not in the same tier of restaurants.

Was looking for sushi options when my sister came to visit and this was close by my work. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple rolls and an appetizer which were all delicious!! Was thinking of giving 4 stars cause I wish they had more variety but the food and service was excellent so the business deserves 5!!

Love sitting at the counter to see the wonderful creations being made. Each of the sushi chefs had their own style and worked very well together. The same goes for the service staff. Very well done and a great place for sushi.
My first time here and I arrived just before it was packed tight. Had a great view of everything being prepared and then wisked off to the eagerly waiting patrons.
Kept it simple since it was my first time there. Ordered edamame, sizzling baby octopus 🐙 , and a dragon 🐉 roll. Everything was fresh, served quickly and #DELICIOUS!!

While their sushi aren’t as large as in Japan, they’re very good and balanced. Gyoza are legit as well. Try the fried oysters!

Live in the neighborhood and walked by and saw how busy it was so decided to order in. Got the vegetable tempura, shishito peppers and a spicy tuna roll. Worst food I’ve had delivered ever. Tempura was ok to be honest. The shishito peppers smelled so bad my daughter left the room. After the second bite I couldn’t tell if they were rancid or had been contaminated with rancid fish. The spicy tuna, which I’ve had 1,000 times was literally brown and the smell was so bad I could not even try it. Threw it straight out. And the Peppers and Tuna rolls were is different sealed trays so they weren’t contaminating each other. The packaging was very well done, however. Explains the price. Never again.

Consistently excellent. Their sushi is top notch, and very reasonably priced. This place isn’t a scene like nobu and some of the other pretentious places, staff are very nice as well.

You will never find sushi of this quality at such a good price. We took the sushi tasting plate for 39$ and the quality and quantity was amazing. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the area.

My wife and I have dining at Kanoyama for several years. While the restaurant's reputation for sushi and sashimi is well deserved, albeit pricey, we go there for the cooked food.
Our favorite entries are the chicken and salmon teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki before pandemic was the best we ever had by far. We went to Kanoyama for dinner a few days ago to celebrate my wife's birthday. We ordered mixed seaweed salad, edamame and the chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki was presented differently than we remember. The portion size was even more generous than previously, the chicken was on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes and a variety of perfectly cooked vegetables.
Teriyaki sauce ringed the plate, and the chicken was phenomenal! The flavor was amazing. Perfectly moist, juicy and tender dark meat chicken.
My wife and I were in heaven the entire meal and we talked about it for days!
When you want superb Japanese food, go to Kanoyama. Reservations recommended.

Highly recommend the omakase. Had their omakase at the sushi bar tonight. From the beginning to the end, it’s a very memorable and pleasant experience. Chef is very attentive and staff (Tak San) is amazingly friendly, pleasant and knowledgeable.
Their sushi rice is one of the best I’ve had. that’s why every sushi is delicious. You get great value for what you pay for.

Can you imagine there’s a bone in the sashimi? Not even close to the quality of a Michelin one star restaurant. And the service is mediocre either. Not worth the price and the Michelin title.

1. They don't hurry here
2. Their sushi are not worth it; appetizers were perfect though
