Very cute interior, I enjoyed the booths. However service was very slow, and felt like the wait staff kept using it as an opportunity to up-sell more appetizers etc. Menu specifies $30 minimum per guest which felt awkward—given menu prices you easily hit that and specifying it seemed again to be pushy. Quantities were very small, and the sushi quality was just ok. Left still hungry but didn’t want to wait another 30-45 minutes if we put another order of food in.

This jewel box of a restaurant is one of my all time favorites. The quality of the sushi is impeccable - my other must haves are the cauliflower tempura, the Brussel sprouts, and the Saikoro steak. The owner and bartenders always make me feel at home and somehow never seem to forget a face or a drink order. Even though I no longer live in the city, this is always my first stop when I come "home". 10/10 would recommend.

Really fantastic food. They had a variety of items so everyone in our group got something they wanted. Highlights were the meatball skewers, Brussels sprouts, and California role. I also appreciated our server happily taking our orders for more food as we ate and wanted more. I think we ordered food 4 times. If you’re gluten free, they have gluten free soy sauce but a lot of things were fried or brushed with a non-gluten free sauce so you just have to keep it simple.

5 star ⭐️ food and 5 star ⭐️ service. Every time I’m in town I always make a trip to Juban. Ashwin and his staff go out of their way to make me feel at home and the food is always top notch. With his knowledge and experience he recommended the perfect sake to go with my delicious sushi and Japanese fried chicken. Can’t recommend this place enough. The perfect neighborhood spot!

The food wasn’t bad, but the portion sizes were so small, I’m pretty sure my cats get bigger meals. At first, I thought they just brought out a sample, and the actual food was coming later.

The prices, however, were massive. $150 for two people, and we still had to grab dinner somewhere else because we left hungry. It felt like we got robbed — but at least we left with something: a good laugh about those tiny portions!

I reside In Bucks County PA. Juban is date night once a week for me and my parents. We have many choices for exceptional food throughout NYC, we choose Juban. The food is amazing, the dishes are not traditional and each dish is full of flavor. They offer alternatives for my family’s diet restrictions, The staff go out of their way to make you feel special. They have real conversations with you without trying to rush your meal , so they can turnover the table to the next group. Juban is a hidden gem In the middle of Chelsea.

I loved this intimate restaurant with a unique and bohemian feel. The food was fresh and delicious, and the drinks were on point! I had a sushi roll, the cauliflower, and the cucumber appetizer that the owner personally brought out as a kind gesture. The bartender was attentive and fun. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fresh meal. I often feel a little hungry after I eat sushi, but the robust menu offers a perfect selection of dishes that pair well together. As a single diner, I felt comfortable and cozy in this remarkable gem of a restaurant.

I've dined at to Juban 3-4 times in the past year and have found it to be consistently fantastic -- the food, drinks, service and vibes. I highly recommend the chicken meatball skewers, chicken kara age, Kobe entree and mushroom noodles, but you can't go wrong with anything really. They also have a great sake and Japanese whiskey selection. If you're in the mood for authentic Japanese food and a good time definitely check it out.

Smallest portions on the planet and has the audacity to “request” that the party spends $30 per person on their menu.

The food itself was good, just not worth the $$$. Portions did not match the prices.

In response to the owners: I am not miffed by the cost per person, which is very typical for a NYC restaurant. I’m specifically talking about the price per portion, as the portions of food for each dish were not substantial.

We ordered your beef crispy rice dish for $30+ dollars and it arrived in a mini cast iron skillet. Your $18 shumai is 4 pieces.

I really wanted to like this place, but it's sadly severely overpriced for an izakaya. Spent about $90 for myself after a 20% tip. Ordered 2 appetizers (tako wasa, which was decent, and a bok choy thing, which was also okay), a chicken thigh skewer for $9 which came in a set of 2, which was a good deal, and a cheese crab thing that I didn't expected to look like mini spring rolls. It was more cheese than crab. $12.

A glass of sake starts from $17. I had a glass that was priced at $18, and a draft beer.

Total damage was about $75 before tip.

No mains. Just 2 drinks (one of which is a beer), 2 appetizers, 1 starter, 1 skewer.

Honestly extremely mid food for the price. Figured I’d give it a shot as you could walk in for dinner without a reservation, but now I see why. Paid $110 for two and left hungry and unsatisfied. The whole team is so passionate for what they do, and the ambience so unique and special, making the experience a delicious and delightful joy. Don’t miss the skewers. I make it a point to dine at JUBAN whenever life takes me to the west side of the city. It's clear that this establishment is rooted in care for the community they are part of and committed to providing excellent service. The integrity embedded in each dish reveals itself with each bite...It's more than evident that Juban sources ingredients responsibly - holding reverence for the farmers and makers that bring their ingredients to life.

The menu is carefully crafted - all items compliments each other. The staff are warm, attentive and genuine. I've been to JUBAN 3 times - looking forward to return again.

I consider myself a PESCATARIAN - there were many options available to for me. The miso soup is soul soothing - the sushi is expertly prepared - the draft beer is crisp - the sake is exquisite.

A life affirming experience -
Highly recommended.

TL;DR — VERY frustrating experience interacting with the staff, will not recommend for parties that require reservations of any kind.

As a disclamer, I did not get to dine at this restaurant and this review is aimed at expressing the subpar interaction with the merchant.

This restaurant has a very strict cancellation policy of $25/person on certain days.

Around 11pm on a Thursday, I booked a 2-person table for an 8pm slot the following day which my friend had to cancel at 5pm (so 3-hours prior to the reservation time) due to professional reasons.

At cancellation time, the host did not hesitate to cancel or warn about the $50 cancellation charge (which was included in the email).

When I called back the following day, the saff became extremely belligerent, unapologetic, and unwilling to reschedule or refund the charge — considering that the reservation only resulted in a small table being "held" for a short period of time (i.e. less than 24hrs), I feel like the $50 cancellation charge is unwarranted.

THIS REVIEW IS AIMED AT alerting future customers on the following:
(1) the strict cancellation policy — which probably suggests not booking reservations on resy. I’ve had situations where, although restaurants warn on cancellation fees, they will not actually execute the charge: this isn’t the case for this restaurant who will be unwilling to cooperate with you, if you were to have personal reasons that may lead you to cancelling.
(2) the staff’s lack of compassion and aggressive behavior on the phone, which could be translated to a poor in-person/dining experience.

EDIT: for some reason, I never received a confirmation email from Resy — the reservation does not appear in my Resy account either, but I remember having to enter my credit card information upon booking.

Went to Juban for the first time and had a lovely dinner experience. Ended up closing the place down with the amazing staff. 1) food was delicious, particular highlights were the octopus kara age (massaged, braised, then fried) and agedashi tofu; 2) staff are very knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. Received great sake recs from Aki; highly recommend the Kinka for a slightly effervescent sake; 3) the vibe is great, be it for a date or with friends. There’s a cute bar area in the front, a main dining area, and a back area that feels more intimate. I recommend dinner in the main room so you can take in the large mural and end the night with a drink at the bar to admire all the whimsical tokens placed throughout (try to find the Japanese Humpty Dumpty). Will definitely be back!

My best friend and I went to dinner here before we went to see Into the Woods on Broadway. The service was on point. Especially popping in somewhere before a show, you need your servers to be on top of it. They were. The cocktails were delicious - I love a good lychee drink and they have it. We also tried a sake off their extensive menu. They have a varied Japanese menu which is nice. Sometimes it's just sushi and feels like playing to the American palette, but this wasn't. I was able to try new things and loved the skewers, the Kobe beef with crispy garlic rice, and the spicy pickled cucumbers. The owner even came out and took a pic with us!! Would definitely recommend, and a short cab ride up to Times Square if you are seeing a show.

Beyond my expectations. Each dish was brought out one at a time to make sure you had room on the table because the restaurant is small but it helps you pace and enjoy each one. Portion to me is small but worth it if you try a few dishes. For me the best wasn’t even the sushi, it was everything else. The food was made with love for us last night. From the edamame, to the beef skewers, the amazing cauliflower or the octopus, it was all made to perfection. The cocktail I had was referred to me by our gracious server, who made my night with the spicy martini. What an amazing experience, I will be telling everyone about this charming little place in Chelsea. Thanks to the entire staff last night, this will be a birthday to remember.

Loved this Japanese Sushi NYC Chelsea GEM! Food and atmosphere were perfect. We caught an early dinner before a show and wish we had more time (so we came back for more late night bites and drinks). If you haven’t tried I recommend! Ask for staff recommendations! They are worth the try!

Small, however cozy and delicious delicate Japanese restaurant. I'd go back whenever possible.
P.S. I'd wish the waiters dress up not so informal.

Food was amazing with friendly service. For 2, ordered: momo, blue crab fried rice, crab cheese rolls, sea urchin sushi roll, brussle sprouts, and sesame tofu agedashi. All of them were delicious. Also worth mentioning that agedashi’s tofu is strongly sesame flavored with no resemblance to regular tofu.

Dessert was disappointing. Ordered lychee mochi ice cream and matcha lava cake. Ice cream had 4 pieces, but the mochi’s extremely sweet and masked the flavor of the ice cream. Matcha lava cake was jarringly paired with a tarty fruit sauce; also it was overcooked and had no “lava”. Knocking off a star for this.

Awful experience. Dont get me wrong, the food was delicious and the place is good. All the waiters were nice except for one woman. She was all the time trying us to order more and more food to clearly gross our check. When paying time came, she basically forced us to give them 20% tip. I understand that is what people usually give here, but a tip is by definition voluntary. The explanation was that " you need to give double of city tax". I gave less at the beginning and she came back to ask for more. Again, awful experience, she totally ruined the night and place for a few bucks more

Came here for dinner & drinks one night and have to say, it was an awesome meal. the vibes here are immaculate, the food tasty, and the drinks strong (: they have an extensive sake and shochu list which I always appreciate, and their warm foods/ sushi selection did not disappoint.

My trips to NYC are incomplete without a meal here. The cocktails and sake selection are fantastic; the food is always on point. I’ve probably tried every thing on the menu and enjoyed it all. I love the casual, easy vibe with - can come here on a date night or a night out with friends. Best of all is the service. The manager is most polite, everyone friendly, I would be a regular and this would surely be “my spot” if I lived in in NYC.

Love this place. Great cocktails (my favorite is the Piccolo's Punch). Amazing sake list, and the staff is very helpful. Try the Otokoyama Nama Chozo canned sake!

More important, the food. So many great shareable dishes. Have to get the uni risotto when they have it (so rich!), and the buta kimchi, and the yellowtail collar, and the Kobe beef with garlic rice, and the yellowtail jalapeño carpaccio. All fantastic.

Was asked by a friend to join him at Judon for dinner. This restaurant is known as Isakaya, meaning an informal bar serving small plates and drinks. There is a wide variety of offerings to suit all palates at very reasonable prices as you’ll see if you view the menu on their website. Between the two of us we had 16 dishes. Yum!! The waiter who served us introduced me to sake. I am forever thankful he took the time to explain the process, why some taste better than others etc. etc. I am now a devotee!
The whole staff was friendly and attentive. The walls are festooned with original art and artifacts. Very cozy and welcoming.
Long story short, I’ll be back!

Favorite restaurant in the neighborhood!!! Amazing food, the kindest and most cheerful staff, and an incredible atmosphere. We love Juban for its artful selection of food as well as the people who make our experience so wonderful. Highly recommend the chicken kara age, the mushroom udon, and the sushi. You honestly can't go wrong!

Overpriced too much with low food quality. This is the worst experience I had so far in NYC, literally. I understand food is expensive now but this place is too much. For example, in a 6 piece salmon roll, 2 of the pieces have NO SALMON at all. Excuse me??? Sushi in grocery has better quality than this! Not mention that the roll is very small. One of the beef dish (maybe the steak one) only has 5-6 small pieces of beef, each piece probably has the size of a quarter. Very ridiculous. Two of us spent over $120 total but left HUNGRY and had to get some more food elsewhere. Basically they charge like Michelin star prices but food quality is worse than grocery sushi. Do NOT eat there.

I should have read the 1 star reviews... spot on. TINY portions and mediocre sushi for $$$$. ordered the mushroom soup, 2 rolls and 2 sushi which is usually plenty for the 2 of us. Shockingly, everything came out on one small plate! we would have had to order 3x our usual for a normal portion. It looked and tasted like the premade sushi you can get at grocery stores. No joke. I have never seen smaller portions. They also RATION the "house-made" soy sauce!! they don't leave it on the table, they pour a tiny saucer of it and walk away. I had to wait to eat for them to return with more... What is going on here?!
We left hungry because I refused to order more tiny rolls at these prices. So many other great sushi places around, don't choose this one.
I rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to help others here. I've eaten at literally hundreds of sushi places around the country and this is the first time I literally felt insulted and cheated, and ... confused why I cant have the soy sauce at my table!? lol never again.
oh, the second star is for the ambiance which was decent.

What a wonderful surprise to stumble upon this izakaya and find such an interesting sake list (Arizona sake, Kuheiji, Heiwa Shuzo!) lovely food & service and hand-thrown ochoko, and an interior that takes me back to pre-pandemic Japan. I hadn't been since its earlier incarnation, and will be back for more.

What started as my favorite neighborhood sushi spot has become one of the best sushi spots to eat in NYC. The food is excellent, not just the sushi but a wide selection of authentic Japanese dishes as well. The sake selection and range is both interesting and delicious. Last, the environment is equal parts downtown cool and like a spot you’d find in Tokyo. I love this place.

Juban is my favorite sushi spot in NYC. A pandemic find, I've been going about twice a month since late 2020. The staff is lovely, welcoming, and knowledgeable, able to guide you towards the perfect sake to pair with your dinner. The food comes out quickly, consistently looks and tastes delicious, and satisfies my cravings. The tempura cauliflower, spicy tuna roll, and fatty tuna hand roll are my favorites, and the fried chicken is another standout. Juban also has the best edamame and miso soup I've ever tried. With plenty of vegetarian offerings, Juban is the perfect spot for cocktails and bites with coworkers, friends, or family. I'm going back again tonight and I cannot wait!

This is the best cutest most intimate sweet best quality little Japanese bar and restaurant. The waiters remember you after one visit and are so kind and happy to make recommendations. The best neighborhood place in Chelsea. The neighborhood is indebted to this beautiful restaurant. I’ve been coming here for many years and it only gets better.

Delicious sushi, grilled food, sharing plates and sakes and Japanese drinks.

i stumbled across this place during the snow storm and decided to give it a try. i ordered 2 of their special menu items (these change so they may not have it available when you visit): shiitake mushroom soup with truffle oil, and a fatty tuna (chutoro) hand roll. i also ordered their saikoro steak and for dessert their matcha ice cream with tempura banana.
shiitake mushroom soup: the broth had a light but very distinct, nuanced shiitake flavor. the truffle is also very present and complements the shiitake very well. it was perfect given the weather.
tuna hand roll: the fish was fresh and the roll was well crafted. i’m usually not the biggest hand roll fan but i did like this one.
saikoro steak: very light in flavor/seasoning with the emphasis on the beef flavor. the dish was served on a hot stone plate. the meat was cooked to perfection and the quality of the meat was decent. i prefer a little more seasoning or perhaps even experimentation with the different flavors. this dish to me felt a bit lackluster and oversimplified. it also comes with brussel sprouts which were not cooked all the way through.
tempura banana/matcha ice cream: the ice cream had a rich matcha flavor that was light and not overbearing. i wasn’t a huge fan of the tempura banana as i just felt the texture of the crunch and the mushiness of the banana wasn’t working for me.

as many have mentioned the vibe is super cool and service was outstanding. prices are a bit on the higher end. but if you’ve been following my reviews, these factors are not a factor in my rating.

the service here is impeccable - the employee was so attentive and conversational! the kobe beef was so tender and delicious - literally melted in my mouth oh wow. i loved the mentaiko mayo sauce that was tossed with the cauliflower! the mentaiko inaniwa udon was also great - the umami flavor was perfect! the octopus karaage had a bit of sake flavor which i was not expecting but it was a good surprise to have haha. my second favorite thing was the housemade hojicha ice cream that was served with fried banana - ive had the hojicha ice cream from haagen daz in japan and i thought that was amazing but this. oh man. it blew my mind - if they sold pints of this, i would buy all of them. thank you juban for such a great dining experience and for great customer service! i have my calendar marked to come back in a year

Super good, well weoth a visit if for the atmosphere alone. Garlice rice / Kobe beef would happily die to have this again. Portions are a tad small, but it's fine because the flavors are incredible. Mixed drinks / cocktails aren't the greatest but they're decent.

Absolutely recommend the mushroom pasta if it's the special of the night and you like mushrooms. 100% condensed mushroom flavor that's to die for.

Great vibe - closest thing to an authentic izakaya in Manhattan so far. Service was friendly and quick and food was tasty, if a bit Americanised. Would come back for the hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) alone as it was excellent. Skip the tuna tartare, it was very bland and poor quality fish. Dinner with beers for 2 was on the pricier side at $200+, but we probably over ordered a bit.
