This review is long overdue βΊοΈπ! Amazing restaurant with above par service. Went as a graduation dinner for my son. My son loves Asian cuisine and is an avid meat eater so this was a perfect combo choice for us. Due to NYC traffic, we were going to be a little late for our reservation. Called to update and they were able to push us back 30-minutes. As a family, we had fun celebrating this milestone and it seemed like we have the restaurant to ourselves. Most of the other customers were seated outside. Food was fantastic, savory and hit all the spots to make us return and recommend to friends & family. Our server, was very attentive, fast and provided insight on things we should and did try.
Was a great day in all and would recommend it to everyone.

Had higher expectations for this place based on some reviews. It is a small restaurant with limited amount of seating inside. The service was a bit slow. Ordered the porterhouse for 2, two sushi rolls, tuna tartare and S+C baked potatoes. The porterhouse was a bit underwhelming and was not as flavorful compared to other steaks I've had. It definitely needed the addition of herb and butter as well as two other sauces. The tuna tartare was fresh and complimented well with the nori sheets. The sushi rolls were a bit overpriced and were just okay.

This place answered the call when we were looking for sunday night late dinner. I was in the mood for sushi while my husband wanted steak. How appropriate that this place marries those two dishes.
When we arrived, we were seated in the back. Dimly lit quaint decor. Having the whole place to ourselves added to the romantic vibes. Service was wonderful. We based all our food choices based on our water's recommendations.
I ordered the Azabu whiskey sour. Love a good egg white cocktail. It was perfect not too sweet with yuzu sake, lime and japanese whiskey.
The Branzino sushi arrived with 4 juicy pieces. Then we feasted on the shrimp crunch and salmon roll. My partner enjoyed the New York strip steak with cheese fries and grilled broccoli. Everything was wonderful but standouts were the shrimp and the broccoli for me.

Salt + Charcoal on the corner of Bedford and Grand is an amazing Japanese steakhouse that grills with Japanese sea salt and Binochotan charcoal imported from Japan. Their signature hand-selected dry-aged steaks goes through a 28 to 50 day ripening process before crank grilling with Binochotan charcoal results in an uncomparable umami flavor. They also have released an interactive and yummy Temaki Set with choice of wagyu, fish, or veggies. Be your own chef and put some rice on a nori then top it with your favorite ingredients and roll it up. Take a satisfying bite and enjoy the fresh ingredients explode inside your mouth. We opted for the 30-Day Aged Jyukusei New York Strip Steak. Juicy tender and amazing umami flavor!

I've come here to share special moments with my loved ones. If you are a steak connoisseur and have not been here yet, you need to make a trip here. This is by far the best Wagyu Steak I've ever had. The price is well with the experience. I don't think there is anything on this menu that is bad. The cocktails are also great.

We ordered the Wedge Salad, Yellowtail Sushi, Crab Cake, Porterhouse & Grilled Lobster, Wagyu Sirloin, Grilled Broccoli, and Cheese Fries. None of the dishes were disappointing nor bland--our journey from appetizers to main course felt like a Ghibli movie.
It seems that some (negative) reviewers may prefer more "Americanized" flavors, with their emphasis on sweeter and saltier dishes--there's nothing wrong with that, but it's important to note that Salt and Charcoal offers a more refined, subtle approach to represent Japanese fine dining. As an immigrant from Japan, we felt that the restaurant perfectly executed the essence of true Japanese cuisine, highlighting delicate flavors throughout the menu. So I'd advise anyone to make sure they visit with this notion & expectation for full appreciation of the experience.
Their homemade sauces were a delicate yet exciting addition, elevating each dish.
The cocktails--Mexican Kombucha, Wabi Sabi, and Naranja--were equally impressive, each one unique and perfectly crafted.
As for service, the balance between attentiveness and the freedom to enjoy our private moment was spot on. The staff was attentive without being intrusive.
Lastly, the ambiance was chic, cozy, and perfectly understated, with the music setting an impeccable tone--classy without any unnecessary flash. Truly, everything about our experience at Salt and Charcoal was top-notch.
Much love!

Just had the amazing Brunch at Salt and Charcoal in Brooklyn.
We tried the new Brunch menu : DIY Temaki hand-rolls. The set include the A5 wagyu tartare, A5 wagyu+ uni, ikura, avocado, cucumber & egg for $38.
It was so fun to make the hand roll by ourselves, Plus the New York strip steak was insanely tender. Come and check this place out!

Decent ponzu sauce. Otherwise, steak was pretty underseasoned and undercooked for the price. Many better options elsewhere.

Love a great bar and great steak! We knocked down some tataki and steak over drinks and everything was excellent. It's not a traditional NYC dry aged steak but not a typical Japanese steak either, it's something else, and it's excellent. The atmosphere was great, the bartender was awesome, in between the stuffy trad steakhouses and the hypey places like Cote this is a place I would happily go all the time.

Wish I could give this place a 0 star; False advertising this place says theyβre open until 12 am. We came 10:40 on the dot ready to make an order without looking at the menu . A truly underrated restaurant! The 1-star reviews from people complaining about the wait are ridiculous. I get that it's annoying when you have to wait, but it happens literally everywhere. And saying the food was terrible is obviously in bad faith. The Wagyu is absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. I also love it raw in the tartare or the sashimi. I'm a big fan of their duck as well. Highly recommend!

Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had in New York. We went in when there were only 2-3 tables of other customers, but still waited 1 hour for just the appetizer. I just couldn't justify how they spent so much time serving us salmon sashimi and uni wagyu roll???
We waited another 30-40 minutes for our entrees, and it was SO MEDIOCRE. The wagyu and the filet mignon with uni were a little cold when served. And the dry-aged ribeye was just okay.
When you spend so much money on food, you naturally have expectations for the food and service. Unfortunately, this restaurant failed in every aspect. They didn't come to explain to us why it took so long to prepare until we approached them. Their excuses were that it takes a lot of time to cook with charcoal and that they were short-staffed. But even so, never in my life have I waited 1 hour for just some sashimi. They could've let us know about the wait when we arrived so that at least we could have been prepared and lowered our expectations.

Fantastic Japanese steakhouse with A5 wagyu. Steak cooked perfectly with an array of seasonings. Melts in your mouth. Recommend the wagyu chefs platter to try the different cuts. Wagyu sushi is also neat and a must try. Cheese fries were good but definitely quite heavy. Could do without. Neat cocktails. Recommend trying to sit upstairs as the ambience is a bit better than the basement room.

Never thought I would say this but the usually-flavorless filet mignon was actually to die for. Some of the best steak Iβve had, and we havenβt even gotten their wagyu. The price range for steaks is very wide here β you can go as low as $50 and as high as $300+

I was looking for a steakhouse 3 weeks ago to hang out with a few colleagues. I randomly searched and discovered Salt and Charcoal. I spoke to Masa, he is the manager, was not sure if he is an owner as well.
We were offered the private room in the basement which holds 15 people comfortably and max out at 20 people. They offered a $75 menu which was quite adequate for the offer. It included a salad, very fresh sushi roll, the 50 day aged strip steak or Salmon or Lamb chops, and the chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert.
We had a very nice time and they assigned 2 servers to assist us. They were courteous and professional. We also tried the crabcakes, the oyster and oxtail soup, the grilled vegetable platter, cheese fries, baked potato They have a nice assortment of different drinks. I had a prosecco and then had Asaki beer on tap. On the 1st floor you can see them preparing the meal. The kitchen has a see thru glass and you can watch them prepare on the grill without hassle.
They seem very eager to please and the service was excellent. Most of the people in my party made positive comments about the food. We had a nice dining experience.
Update 2024: Since that 1st dining experience, Salt and Charcoal has elevated its menu, in adding more items, even more wagyu, it's been a real treat especially sonce I have eaten here over a dozen times. Sure, the prices have risen, but the flavors have skyrocketed!! They are a premier neighborhood gem that no other place in Williamsburg can muster. Last night, they served me and my guest a Chateaux Briand med well, which cut like butter. Along with their signature baked potato, we were in heaven. We also had the char grilled edimami, the slightly grilled oyster in sake and soy sauce, in addition to the Fried Nasu & Maitake Mushroom in a broth! It was a great night again. For dessert, they offered a Valentines Special which was a Chocolate Banana cake...available on Valentines Day! It was a great night again.

Since our first visit in November for my partner's birthday dinner this has become our favourite restaurant in NY and have since come back 3 more times with different groups of people. The staff are super friendly and really know their stuff. The drinks, of which there is a lot of variety, are delicious. And the food...
Besides the steak - we usually get the porterhouse to share - the tuna tartare has a twist and is one of the best things I've eaten. I also got the smoked duck one night I didn't fancy having steak and it was so so so good. I highly recommend. The sides are also always charred to perfection; namely the edamame and broccoli.
I honestly can't fault this restaurant and strongly urge anyone to give it go!

This is my favorite restaurant in NYC. Everything is spectacular. I have a feeling they are in for a Michelin star soon. One night a had 3 orders of the Boston scallop to my face. The Wagyu tasting platter is epic. Best crab cake Iβve ever had. Everything here is the best Iβve ever had when it comes to an all around proper Japanese restaurant. This restaurant is a gold mine of culinary pleasure and flavor.

The "Wagyu" that they advertise as a5 is not. It is the same aged steaks that they serve. It comes on some bougee stone plate and they charge 270 for it. Now don't get me wrong the steaks are good but THEY ARE NOT A5 WAGYU. Even in the pic of the review above u can see they are not wagyu. No marbling too thick of a cut. Its just deceptive.

It was rather a poor experience. We waited for the order for over 40 minutes. The rolls were pretty but impossible to pick up without them falling apart completely (happened with 3 different sets we had) so we had to scrub them with a fork. The octopus was a really small portion for the price and tasted like lard. Steaks and salmon steak were average.

The food was ok but nothing special. An ok steakhouse, but not somewhere I would go back again. Porterhouse steak was just ok. Tuna tartare was dry and bland, could use some spice and sauce. Matcha cake was just a green sponge cake. Overpriced for the quality of the food and service. Also, to include an 18% gratuity in the bill and then ask for an additional 15%, 20% or 25% is just rude and a credit card surcharge on top of it.

Visited 2 years ago
Overall, I thought it could be better.
Maybe its one of those things where you catch them on a bad night? Not sure but, I felt like my table was forgotten about. I would catch myself staring at my glass wishing I could grab another drink. The front desk for the host was right next to our table so I would give her a look hoping she would see that I needed service but nothing came from it. You know, typically I speak up but I heard great things about this restaurant so I tried to stay patient.
We were sitting near the entrance and the door would bang close every time someone came in or out(customer or employee serving tables outside. It was a pretty chilly night too, my partner was wearing a dress and she was getting this cold draft every few minutes followed by the bang of the door shutting itself. It was really distracting and chipped away the fun over the night.
It was our anniversary dinner so we went out intending to spend money, dine, drink and have fun.
Instead, we finished dinner and dessert thinking it was βgoodβ but we were ready to get out. When we got the bill, I couldnβt believe I spent that much. Frankly, we wanted to drink more and try more small bites but we listened to our gut early on, got our steak dinner and left. Felt way more expensive for the service/overall experience.
I will say, my server was really great. They made recommendations and described the dishes to us but, the gaps between visits and staring at my empty drink, sucked. The food WAS good but I canβt remember if it was great because I was so distracted about service and feeling uncomfortable, cold, and distracted from the door closing.
Not the way I wanted to remember my night. Unlikely Iβll return.

A casual yet swanky restaurant in Brooklyn. We started with charcoal edamame, which was smokey and perfectly salty. We ordered the seasonal lobster Raviolo, which was one big ravioli made with lobster and pumpkin puree with a soup. For the main entrees, we ordered the Prime Wagyu Steak which was A5 Wagyu beef with ponzu sauce and various condiments on the sides (sea salt, garlic chips, wasabi, and schezwan peppercorns). Steak was beautifully cooked. Additionally, we ordered lamb chops with a hollandaise sauce and miso mille feuille potato. Definitely great for a special event or date night.

Went here for my birthday. Reserving a seat for 4, were able to get our table and seats rather quick for a 6:30pm Friday dinner. Dark setting was fine and the place was intimate enough so that we couldn't here side conversations. The first waiter was OK, but not knowledgeable enough to answer our questions on the menu. Food was good, expensive. Not sure if I will come back, but food was good though. I didn't feel the WOW factor here.

I went to this restaurant 3/4/2023, great services, delicious food, down side though is that they charged me 10:57 pm that day(no biggie), then at 10:59 they charged again for the same order. The worst part about that I tipped generously too. Just a tiny thing ruining a great experience.

We went for an early Valentine's Day dinner and our experience was great. We were seated at the booth on a Saturday night with no reservations. They had a coat check at the back of the small establishment which wasn't necessary since we had a booth but he insisted. The food was great.
The Uni & Wagyu roll with the shiso leaf had so much flavors that went well together.
The Crunchy Oyster was good with thr butter sauce. No much taste of oyster but a big crunch in one bite.
Wagyu Yukke Tartare was the star of the appetizers. It came with lotus chips and seaweed. The seaweed taste very strong and flavorful. The presentation was also very cool.
The Sashimi Platter was the most worth it in price to food ration. It came with very very fresh Uni from Hokkaido, roe, tuna, two types of salmon and I think yellowtail.
This was already very filling for 2 people.
We then ordered some A5 Wagyu steak since we figured we were at a specialty place for it. They cooked it to perfection and it definetly had the melt in your mouth, glutinous bite. It came with a variety of some little sauce/dip on the side of the plate. We ordered a side of fries from the suggestion of our server of our meal not being enough, but it was plenty and we didn't even get to the fries!

The food was good. I spent 470 dollars for two people and went for the uni mignon steak(the MP was 190 that day), the strip steak, and assorted sashimi of the day. The uni was fantastic. It had a sweet taste and a super soft texture. But the sashimi was frozen. So it was freezing when served to the table. So it is hard for us to taste the sashimi. I could taste the ice that infused the meat. But again, the uni was fantastic. Service is okay, but you can get better one in other expensive restaurants (Those Michelin restaurants). They should have cleaned the table on time. They only cleaned half of it and left the other half wet. And provided me with two knives and no fork for my steak.
All in all, If you need a great uni or wagyu experience, come here!

This is my second time going there. They only take reservation, maybe because we go on New Year's Eve. But they food is kinda disappointed compared to the 1st time I was there. We ordered 7 dishes. Not gonna name all out, will only name those fail me. "Uni wagyu hand roll" when it came to the table the uni look very sad. Looks like it been sitting there for a while, waiting for their turn to get on the table. "Porterhouse steak," ask for medium rare when it server is medium well wasted. And last is the "cheese fries," From what I'm understanding fries are the type of appetize, not a main course, but our fries come last, also the cheese cold and sad. We didn't even touch it.
A restaurant with reservations ONLY I don't expect A+ quality but at least decent quality, yet the entire meal is very disappointed. I been telling my friends how good this place was but this meal is very disappointed.
The first time i went there, the food I'll gave an A- quality, but after that night, it was like D quality.

Have been wanting to try this place ever since seeing their uni filet mignon. This restaurant is worth the $$$. The service and food were all delicious. Every single thing we got was so good. My favorite two dishes were actually the sesame crusted salmon and the crab cakes. We also got the cheese fries which were a good side and the portions were quite large. The uni filet mignon was so yummy and the steak melted in your mouth. The salmon roe and seaweed sauce were so savory and complimented the steak well. It was definitely pricey ($192) but the portion size is large and you can definitely share it with another person.

Went for a private work event, so we dined in the wine cellar/basement. The atmosphere was intimate, yet well lite. Servers were attentive and friendly. If your meat preference is well done, include the words "not brunt to charcoal crisp". You may think I'm joking, I'm so seriously not. However other than that over sight I didn't anticipate, the food even the burnt items were flavorful(Past the seared in burnt taste. I really wish they hadn't though, bc the lamb I had would have tasted so much better had they not). Besides that, good food and wine were had, as well as a good time by all. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

This restaurant can probably be one of the best places in Brooklyn for Japanese cuisine. It's cozy and comfortable, they have few table down stairs.
Started with some classic Sake and must say that Tokyo Wheat Beer is out of the world.
Orderd Salmon and Shrimp rolls which very lip smacking.
And the show stopper has to be their Wagyu Steak, a review may not do justice, so I'll leave it here.

Had Wagyu filet mignon steak and Yuzu Hi as cocktail. The cocktails were excellent and the service was attentive. The steak itself was great too and it was interesting to try it with different spices and sauces. I really liked the whole onion as a side.

The worst restaurant I have ever eaten. We waited an hour for the food, 30mins for checking out. The waygu tastes like chicken. Thatβs definitely not A5. Medium rare is over cooked, Waygu is also over cooked. Foods were disgusting.

I walked in after a seminar in Brooklyn with my whole family. Even though we did not have a reservation we were treated fantastic. From start to finish everything was perfect. Everyone was very nice from the hostess to the manager. Highly recommend!

For the price I expected much better β¦the atmosphere fantastic and the service was EXCELLENT. But to be honest Most dishes were under seasoned and for the price point Iβm really shocked that I was so underwhelmed. When you order the cheese fries they come with ketchupβ¦lame! So we asked for spicy mayonnaise and it was three dollars. I canβt believe they were even serving ketchup. The candy at the end was a nice touch.

Never even got to sit and eat here. Absolutely terrible interactions with the front door host. This awful and lengthily interaction left my partner and I feeling so horrible and proved to be rooted in racism. Given the other mediocre at best reviews of everything at Salt + Charcoal, I highly recommend avoiding this place.

I highly recommend Salt + Charcoal. Cooked to perfection on your terms and the tastes will leave a permanent memory. This was my favorite steakhouse in New York City. Make sure to order the cheese fries!: This was excellent and being from Wisconsin (everything cheese), this a show stopper.

Went there in the winter. Waited for 2.5 hours in the freezing cold without an entree. We left the place angry and starving. There was an oven issue that night. The waitress kept lying to us that our food would be ready in 10 min while they havenβt even fixed the machine to start cooking. Disappointed experience.

I went here with a bunch of my family and friends and we Turned it into a family style sharing. We started with a bunch of appetizers the Fried Nasu & Maitake mushroom, tuna avocado roll,
yellowtail roll and salmon roll. Then for dinner we put filet mignon, fresh smoked duck breast and Atlantic salmon with potatoes for everybody to share. The chef served the dishes in a different way than than typical Japanese style. They put salmon roe and wasabi mayo in the salmon roll. It gave it a taste that I never had before. The duck came out like a steak. It was Juicy tender meat.
One dish was just as good as the next. Itβs a small place and it sits on a corner in Williamsburg Brooklyn. nice outside spot, very cozy and the staff were super friendly. They have a private room in the downstairs that you sit inside a wine cellar room as well.
They also specialize in A variety of wagu beef.

Great restaurant & bar. I enjoyed the wagyu appetizer, a sushi roll, the baked potato, and an espresso cocktail for dessert. (See photos.) Everything was excellent. The service was friendly and the bartender was a cool conversationalist. Highly recommended!

Stumbled in here randomly after living within blocks for years. It was excellent. Aged steak cooked to perfection. Sushi is good too! I enjoyed the steak here more than St Anselm tbh, which is crazy to say I know

My partner and I were excited to come here because the esthetic reminded us of a time in our relationship we wanted to go back to. When we came, we came on our anniversary. Let me start by saying, the service was perfect, everyone was on it. The next thing is pending each person's preference. PREREQUISTE: my partner and I are foodies. So we love to try new things. With that being said - just be mindful. Depending on your taste palette. The steak we order just wasn't worth it. The sushi was mediocre (def had better). But that steak, don't spend the money on it if you really want something that'll blow your mind. This steak did not. It was not worth the money we spent there. We thank the staff for their service but we won't be going back. The bill was shy of $500 which didn't bother us, what bother us was the food just wasn't worth their pricing. The three stars are for the drinks, service and decor. Not for the food in any way.
Good luck. Again. It's per pallete.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE! We just had two apps - the oysters and the tuna tarter and they were the best weβve ever had and weβve had a lot! Excellent service, ambience, drinks and food.
