Almost feel like I was in Japan! Great ambience. It’s airy inside with a cute tatami table setup. Although I don’t feel comfortable sitting like that for an entire meal. Haha.

Deconstructed sushi is an art. It’s really a good way to eat when you are on low carbs as the rice of bowl comes on the side.

The fish is fresh with ingredients that go well together. I wish I could ask for more seasoning plates (salt, wasabi, black pepper, etc.) but the server didn’t come back until we almost finished our meal. Other than that, we enjoyed the time at Ume.

Prix Fixe Set - $78
Sushi tasted fresh, and was super interesting tasting all the flavor combos! We didn't really utilize the different types of salt due to the flavor combos on the sushi already. The price did seem kind of steep for the set, and probably a one time dining experience for us. Ambiance was great, however the heating in the back garden was a bit too hot in the winter. Service was 5/5!

The food is absolutely worth the hype—everything was delicious, especially the mochi dessert. However, the ambiance was a big drawback. Both the indoor and outdoor seating areas were quite cold, and even with heaters, there was a noticeable draft. If you plan to visit, be sure to dress warmly. That said, I probably won’t return unless it’s during the summer when the weather is more comfortable.

We were a little late for the reservation which set things off on a suboptimal schedule since their seatings are a strict 90 minutes. But honestly that led it to kind of feeling rushed even though the price fixed plate doesn't take that long to prepare or eat. It's very factory organized in there.

I'll be honest this is just another spin on the cheaper than $150-$200 but still "premium" omakase places. But instead of a chefs counter it's like a Japanese guest house vibe where you sit on mats which is super cool.

However it exhibits the same tasting characteristics as those "quick premium" omakases... Like a lot of heckin yuzu and yuzu salts and yuzu concoctions and just that like highly stylized flavour you know. It's just overdone a little to have everything so seasoned with a little fancy topping and it's own twist on flavour which is usually sour. Same for their rice. It's a strong sushi rice. Does it taste very savory, and good? YES. But you can't taste the fish that much as a result.

Service wise I can't fairly judge. We were late. It felt perfectly fine but slightly rushed and off rhythm. Hard to get orders in a little. Had to ask for some stuff proactively. And felt a bit stern. But again. Can't fairly judge. I would hate to deal with a late party if I were in their shoes.

All in all an enjoyable and tasty but not super remarkable experience, glad we tried it though.

Overall just an incredible experience. The quality of the fish is superb, the dining experience is one of a kind, and the staff is amazing. If you're looking for a unique omakase experience this is for you.

Though if you are looking for the most traditional omakase, try somewhere else. They're really doing it different here.

First time here and it was amazing!! First - the ambiance is nice. It’s very cute inside, you take your shoes off and sit on cushions on the ground. It feels very calm and relaxed. Second - the fish is really fresh and the concept is fun. It was cool to experiment with the different salts and make our own handrolls. Every piece was delicious. You also get soup, and they have good drink options as well. Third - great service! Our server checked on us multiple times. He was helpful regarding the menu. He even asked if we were celebrating something special and brought a dessert with a candle! We will definitely be back and I can’t recommend this place more.

The place is beautiful from the lighting to the decoration. The food is really good quality and came pretty fast. The negitori though has too much emphasized on the seaweed crush making it harder to taste the fish. The bowl was absolutely delusion. I got blown away by the meat, you can smell the aroma in every bite!! Honestly a really good restaurant and worth the price.

Atmosphere and service was 5 stars but for $78 before tax and top, the “omakase” / sushi was forgettable. Fish did not taste fresh and quality was average, maybe even below average. Can easily find another omakase for the same price point if not less at other omakase spots in Manhattan.

Ume is a fun unique sushi experience. For $78, the price is actually pretty good considering you get 12 pieces of sushi.

We made a same day reservation for late afternoon. When you enter, you ring the doorbell to be greeted and you wash your hands and take your shoes off to enter the space. We opted to sit in the dining room instead of the garden (it was so hot that day) but both spaces were beautiful. Seating is on the floor so just be aware if you have any issues with that.

We ordered their famous sushi set, which came with 12 pieces of fish and 9 different seasoning combinations. You also get rice, seaweed, and soup. You can choose to create your own hand rolls or eat the fish in one bite. The descriptions are all on the menu so I won’t go into detail here, but my favorites were the zuke and toro for the fish and the yuzu salt and fresh wasabi for the seasoning. The menu also provides suggestions of what to eat the seasonings with, but of course you are free to experiment with what you prefer most. It is definitely a unique experience and the plating is picture worthy.

We were also celebrating an anniversary so they gave us a scoop of ice cream to celebrate!

Overall, would recommend for a fun sushi date!

DO NOT BOOK for large group reservations: Ume never disclosed a strict 90 min limit for a birthday lunch booked over a month ahead of time, and was unprofessional / not accommodating at all when faced with their mistake. This is a gimmicky instagram restaurant but does not care about the customer’s dining experience at all.

I booked for a birthday lunch (originally booked for 10, ended up as 14 ppl) over a month ahead of time, directly with Ume via text message vs a third party site like Resy. I made sure to ask clarifying questions when I booked, like if it would be okay to bring cake/balloons, even what the seating chart of the table would look like.

There was NO mention of the strict 90 min dining time limit when I booked, or anytime in the month between booking and the reservation date. I was told via a standardized text the night before my reservation about the 90 min limit. I responded within 10 minutes to that text, and didn’t receive a response back until I was already at the restaurant the day after (screenshots attached).

I was told I would be given a 15 min extension, but nothing else could be done, even though it was the restaurant’s mistake of not stating their policy. They only took one bottle of sake off of my bill of over $1,500.

In addition, the service left much to be desired. We had to pass down our own cups/plates, there was no knife provided to cut the cake, no refills on sake or water, etc. I had to get up and ask for refills of the nori sheets.

For this high of a bill, I was extremely disappointed with the lack of accountability, lack of transparency, basic to minimal service, and rushed in/out dining experience.

Honestly, for the price you pay, it’s not at all worth it.

I don’t mean to be harsh, but the pieces aren’t that good and the experience is more or less redundant.

They offer you various salts to pair with the fish but none of them elevate the flavors. A couple of pieces sit on top of hidden lemon and lime wedges, small enough that you can eat them unassumingly. Spitting out a piece of citrus, isn’t exactly conducive to a great experience.

There are really good omakase’s in NY that are significantly cheaper and way better quality /experience. Also the squid was beyond chewy. I’m not a fan under normal circumstances but it was like chewing on rubber with a piece of asparagus on top.

I will say that the soup was amazing. Best part of the meal.

I highly recommend booking the garden seating when making your reservation online—the calming scenery adds to the overall ambiance.

We enjoyed a 12-piece sushi selection, and they even offer a menu to follow along or give you the freedom to be creative with your choices. As a sweet touch to celebrate our anniversary, they surprised us with vanilla ice cream drizzled with sesame and honey. The hospitality and friendly service made the evening even more memorable.

Contrary to other reviews, $78 pp for the sushi set is a great deal considering you are essentially receiving 12 hand rolls, beautifully presented. The set included some premium cuts including crab and otoro. The salts made this activity super fun as an interactive sushi date. My only complaint would be the fact that the garden is a bit warm during the summer, and since everything is brought out at once, you are forced to eat fairly quickly to ensure the fish stays fresh. Would definitely recommend booking the garden when it’s a bit cooler.

Tourist trap, I’ve been to many omakase around US and Canada, by far the biggest let down.

Before our dinner we were greeted by a long disclosure regarding on time arrival and losing the table if we were 5 mins late. This I understand given the type of restaurant. So we arrive 15 mins early and check in. We were seated 6-8 mins after our appointment time. If you make a big fuss about being on time I expect a double standard. We were seated by a rude server, whom later we requested some napkins from that same server who didn’t give us napkins after walking around the tables multiple times.

Given the $78 USD price point comparing it to other omakases this is by far the biggest let down, service is below average and fish is below average (some of the fish you could tell was not fresh). I’ve been to cheaper omakase places that tasted better for comparison in Canada, Jumi Gozen, Toronto with a price point of $50 USD for their lunch comparing it to Ume is like heaven and hell.

Very disappointed that words cannot describe.

Was visiting from Toronto and we saw this restaurant on YouTube. Everything looked good on the video so we booked the place instantly.

We reserved the seats at the garden area which was kinda nice but because the weather was chili, they turned the heat up and the entire space was full of those old ac smell, so gross.

The presentation of the food was nice, but was disappointed after the first bite lol could definitely tell that the fish was not fresh. All 12 kinds of fish tasted similar. The set also came with 12 kinds of seasoning that you can try on your own, but was really confused due to the lack of instruction, and they did not go well with the fish at all.

I felt like the owner was trying to put together a bunch of new ideas and experiences, but at the end it just became a mess lol

The set was $78USD, you can definitely find something that’s better than this.

Had a reservation for this place after seeing this around social media. What a disappointment. Was greeted the night before with a wall of text telling us to not be late and only allowing 5 minutes to hold our table. We got there early by 10 minutes and they wouldn’t let us in until they vacate the last round of customers which took about 10 minutes after our reservation time. So what’s the point of arriving early?

Clearly the servers had no customer service experience. Was greeted by a server with attitude before going in to sit. During the service we asked for napkins and hot water twice, didn’t come the first time, when we asked the second time, the napkins and hot water did come except we got 3 napkins for a party of 4 and the water wasn’t even hot.

Although the presentation was good, the food wasn’t. The fish wasn’t particularly fresh, they give you 6 nori sheets with a small bowl of rice which isn’t enough to wrap all 12 pieces of fish. (Extra rice and nori is extra charge). The salt pairing was way overwhelming and unnecessary as it overpowers the taste of the fish. This place is definitely not worth the money for the quality you get.

The menu was very interesting and had choices that most other restaurants do not which I loved. Although the idea is cool, I was a little weirded out by how long the fish sits out for on the bar. The service was good besides the fact that the waiters stomp around the garden and because we are sitting on the floor, we feel every single shake. My tea was great and the two extra hand rolls that I ordered were also very yummy. Also the rice… delicious!! I think this is a place that you go once and probably don’t go back.

Food is fine, not bad but nothing amazing. Some things didn’t go well together (overpowering flavours combined with mild flavoured fish), whereas others were great. I did not like how you have to split the seaweed in half yourself… nori is like 10 cents per piece. Just give us 12 pieces. The suggestion to put all the remaining salt into the rice is also terrible. At the end, you have like 2 bites of rice left max, so it’s just a disgusting salty mess.

Service was very good.

Seating was super gimmicky. Unless you’re used to sitting down on the floor cross legged, you will be sore within 10 mins of sitting down. Just give me a normal table and seat. We are not in Japan at a ryokan.

Gimmicky entrance where you have to put your shoes in plastic lockers, and wait in line even if you have a reservation. Feels like you’re entering Team Labs rather than an upscale restaurant.

Seating is inauthentic. Hard “tatami” mats on top of a freezing cold raised deck with a draft under your feet. Actual restaurants in Japan have a sunken floor (horigotatsu) for your legs, or at least some back support or under-table heating. Knees hurt, back hurt, legs cold.

The food was underwhelming. Dirty menu. No explanation for the omakase selection. Recommends you to taste each of the salts to pair with the fish, but then you just have a mouth full of salt. They only give you 6 pieces of nori so you have to tear them in half, and if you want more it’s $2 extra. Omakase itself was hit or miss. Overpowering toppings like jalapeño or rice cracker covered the taste of some fish completely. And for $78+, we left hungry.

Interior design felt cheaply executed. Dollar store fairy lights wrapped around dead plants, flashing every few seconds. Ikea lamps with exposed wires. Un-repotted plants with the price tag left on. Only one soap bottle for two sinks at the entrance.

Quality of the sushi was decent but does not reflect the asking price. Besides the unique presentation of the dish for pictures and pretty interior, I can't think of a good reason to recommend this place given many better options in the city at this price point.

Expensive but nice food. Great experience until you pay the check. After that they cannot wait for you to leave. All the niceties and extreme politeness disappear. They don't even smile at you when they say goodbye. Instead of feeling like a valued customer you just feel used. Such a pity to destroy something that could have been great at last moment.

Ume offers an enticing exploration of Japanese cuisine, though some dishes fell short of expectations. While the ambiance and service were impeccable, the freshness of the fish left something to be desired. A slight fishiness and unexpected softness detracted from an otherwise enjoyable dining experience. Despite this, Ume's innovative menu and attentive staff still warrant a visit for those seeking a contemporary take on Japanese fare.

Relaxing atmosphere, amazing food, excellent service. Overall my favorite dining experience so far.

Went here to celebrate our first year anniversary. Absolutely LOVED everything about this place. When you walk in, you remove your shoes and wash your hands. As soon as we entered the dinning area, we were greeted with a warm welcome and smile from everyone.

The omakase was amazing. I loved that you basically decide how you eat. We opted to create the hand rolls as was suggested by the waiter.

It came with soup, 12 pieces, nori sheets, white sushi rice, soy sauce, and a selection of spices to pair each of the 12 pieces with. We ordered the white peach drink and yuzu matcha drink. They were both very refreshing and good. At the end, they gave us a scoop of ice cream to celebrate our occasion.

HIGHLY recommend coming here to dine with a partner, family or friends. I will definitely be dinning here again and trying other delicious things they have on the menu.

Ume is a cool sushi-set concept restaurant that is known for its set course ($78) that comes with 12 different cuts of seafood that you wrap in your own temaki (handrolls). The restaurant has a minimalist zen aesthetic with low tables (you sit on cushions with shoes off) and a garden section in the back.

The set wasn't enough food for us, so we ended up getting the chirashi don from the a la carte menu - a bit pricey but well made.

The staff was very accommodating and also give a little complimentary birthday dessert.

All in all, the meal was ~$230 after tip including a bottle of sake with dinner.

Loved this experience, it's one of the most peaceful dining experiences I've ever had.

Loved:
-The ambience, the quality

Know before you go:
-90 minute time limit
-prix fixe is $78 p/p

This spot in Brooklyn is so peaceful and transports you to a zen spa. The dining experience is super unique. When you walk in, check in with the host and then you're asked to remove your shoes and wash you hands.

All the tables are long benches where you sit criss-crossed on cushions, there's an option to sit outdoors in their heated garden or indoors.

The sushi set comes with rice, nori, soup, and 12 pieces of pre-assembled fish / shellfish. My favorite was the scallop which was so zesty.

There's also drinks to order. The dining experience was so unique and I really enjoyed it!

Ume's elevated level of cuisine does not match the homey, country living vibe they seem to be trying to mix it with.

Sitting on the floor to eat is not actually authentic at restaurants in Japan. Restaurants that have floor seating in Japan either have room to put your legs underneath (horigotatsu) or at least offer little chairs for comfort (zaisu). In any case, a tiny "tatami matt" on top of a hard (plastic) wood floor is not nearly as soft as actual tatami flooring.
The extra room out back at Ume is makeshift and not fit for Winter. If the floor is going to be that cold, and if you're forcing your customers to sit on it, you should have space heaters at every table, and make every effort to ensure everyone is comfortable.

The quality of the food is excellent, and there's nothing to complain about the service, but there is a lot of DIY in this set course. That aspect might be fun while sitting comfortably at a counter or table, but quickly becomes tedious while shivering and contorted on the ground.

A delicious omakase set at a reasonable price. Seafood is all very fresh with a unique way to season your own food and build your own rolls, sushi, sashimi with your choice of seasoning although they have published recommended seasoning choices for each fish. If you run out of seasoning, you can always ask for more. The set is already pretty filling but if you're still hungry/looking for a larger meal, the scallop salad with uni and the chirashi bowl are both amazing choices and you can't go wrong with either. Dessert is quite tasty as well and they added a candle to celebrate my birthday. Service was quick and friendly but they are strict with dining times so make sure you arrive a few minutes before your reservation as they do politely give you warnings and kick you out on the clock.

Ume in williamsburg was such a lovely dinner experience 🥹✨🎋 the seating in the garden was so intimate and I loved how pretty the outdoor seating was!

🍽️Ordered:
(4) omakase sets

This omakase was so unique because they serve deconstructed nigiri and allow you to make your own hand rolls with the ingredients. The seasonings all come on the side and each one is pairs with a different fish. The fish was sooo fresh and I loved every bite of this meal. My favs were definitely the king salmon, ebi + scallop, madai, and toro. This was such a fun and delicious dinner, I am so excited to go back during my next NY trip!!

Overall, it was a good experience. The food was ok and the staff were very friendly. The staff here was definitely very friendly. they made sure to accommodate for my allergy to the best of their ability. We sat inside for our lunch and the cushions were very nice and comfortable. They even had a nice soft blanket under the table. The food was unique and very detailed. There was this menu/ guide of some kind the explained what was what and how to get the full experience (recs of different combos) with the different unique salts and fresh wasabi we were given. The fish was very fresh. You might feel slightly full after the pre-fixed menu which is like 78 dollars. But I definitely recommend ordering a don to share or something to share after the prefix menu (the bill does adds up though) The yuzu matcha cucumber was sooo refreshing and there is enough to be shared with two people. To be honest it is expensive so it’s definitely more like once in a while thing.

Insanely tasty!!!! It definitely lives up to and surpasses the hype- I had been wanting to try this place for several months and finally went. The portion sizes of the fish are actually great- we left feeling super full which is somewhat atypical for sushi. I love the “choose your own adventure” vibe of the set meal with the flavored salts and spices they have, which definitely pack a punch despite arriving on a deceptively tiny plate. The staff were also super attentive and friendly. Would 10/10 go again.

Took a Manhattan friend to impress them with something more original than manhattan but equally as delicious and quality. It didn’t disappoint them. The garden was a beautiful respite from the city. I loved the atmosphere.

At this level, I’d expect more inspired and informed service with regards to pairings and origin of the ingredients. I truly enjoyed the creativity and spontaneity they encourage with their delivery.

They are pretty clear on the time set limits on their website and messaging but I feel like they could find a way to be less obtrusive and pushy or create a flow that allows people spending to linger vs kicking them out when they just delivered them a mini carafe of sake and a beer. Like. Seriously. Take give them a 10min Grace or cut them off.

Tldr; go on an evening when it's not too hot, it'll be an experience so just read and enjoy ~~

- friend made reservations for me and my man, didn't know it'd be an experience and we were there for it!
- had to take your shoes off with no slippers provided. So be prepared idk wash your feet beforehand? I didn't know and we had walked all day, so I'd be uncomfortable if this was for a professional or a first date. They have bathroom slippers that are communal...so idk
- lots of reading, but definitely informative!
- service was slow, we wanted more yuzu koshu about 3x refill, and took time and had to repeat ask
- all tasted great and the recommended combos were worth it
- they sat us weirdly because I'm a small woman and they put the two muscular guys on one side. So they had to squish quite a lot, constantly changing positions to stay comfortable
- dessert was great! The soup was amazing!
- we loved the yuzu koshu, ghost pepper salt, and yuzu sake. We now have all of these 3 in our kitchen regularly!
- vibes were good and warm, the boys felt a bit too hot, but it was bearable at night. Probably would suck for them during the day!
- smelled good despite everyone's feet out
- I'd recommend it if you're open to the experience, but it's not an ordinary omakase

I would define it as a great quality ingredients DYI omakase restaurant.

We went there for a special celebration and the ambiance was very authentic, aka you seat on the floor.

The food is delicious but I wanted to give some heads up if helpful:

- if you can’t cross your legs for a long time (or at all) it can get tiring and uncomfortable
- use your seaweed wraps wisely, they give you less wraps that actual sushi pieces
- if you go in winter, wear warm clothes for inside or outside seating. The doors are usually open and they are glass
- you might not feel very full by the end of it (my husband was a hungry), but you can also get a delish dessert

Pre fixe menu with opportunities to add on top of the pre fixe. It comes with soup, a bowl of rice and nori (seaweed) sheets. Basically build your own hand hand roll in a taco form with some flavored salts and different kinds of wasabi. The raw seafood is of very good quality. The amount of food in the pre fixe leaves you full without add-ons. Quite honestly, you don’t need to add-on more to the pre-fixe menu. Some of the add-on items could easily be a meal on its own.

Sake by the bottles only. They also serve Japanese beer and non alcoholic beverages.

It was an interesting dining experience. No shoes in the dining area. Seating on the floor with cushions only, which did not enhance the dining experience. The lighting is dim in the dining area and brighter in the enclosed “garden” area. The staff were nice.

The prices do add up quickly especially when you add beverages and add-on items. The pre fixe is pricey for what it is.

Staffs asked me and my gf while we were literally chewing almost caught me coughing the whole tuna out. For the prix fix (dont like the word play here) menu, tuna is sour not not really fresh. Uni is somewhat fall all over the part. Tamago and caviar are not really complement to each other. I followed the instruction to mix the leftover salt into rice and omg that was the worst idea. Bunch of weird taste that ruined the lovely Japanese rice. Please do not try to attempt. Please come here for the gram and the selfie, not for the food.

I have to agree with the other reviewers complaining about the garden seating. It is very warm with no AC, I was seated by the stairs and had people passing directly behind me, and a fan blowing against the back of my head, blowing around the menus and things we had on the table. It was a very unpleasant experience all around. The waitstaff makes you feel rushed, a tiny speck of wasabi is provided which is not enough for one piece of sushi, and no ginger or palette cleanser is provided. The sushi itself, while the presentation is pretty, is average at best. I ended up paying 200+ to be uncomfortable and underwhelmed by the fish.

It’s not the first time I’ve dined here, but this time, the short-haired girl at the front desk was very rude, refusing to provide any help during the waiting period of the guests and being ignored when they met customers in the store and left. The buffer device of the door should be repaired. Every time the door is closed, it feels like the glass will be shattered. It is unpleasant to invite guests to enter later than the scheduled time. There is a gap in service compared with other Japanese materials

We got a table inside at 5pm and definitely a good call on a hot day. They have the outdoor area with AC but was a bit hotter in comparison to the indoor. The checkin process was fast, typical true Japanese restaurant where you leave your shoes in a compartment and walk bare foot inside (for sure bring back memories traveling in Japan). The seats are on the floor so we all made sure to wear stretchy pants. All the salts, foods, and presentation were so on point. We were comfortably filled but not too full after finishing the meal. A unique experience, perfect for date night and friends dinner alike. Highly recommended.

When you walk in, they ask you to wash your hands and take off your shoes. You’re then greeted inside and pass by the open kitchen, where the chefs are preparing these plates. The seating area is airy and the ambiance is serene. I should note that you have to sit on the floor for your meal, which can get uncomfortable. The service was prompt and friendly.

Celebrated my birthday with my boyfriend last night at Ume and was SO impressed by every aspect of the experience. They start out everyone with their twelve-piece set which comes with a small bowl of seasoned rice (good enough to eat on its own), soup, twelve large bites with garnishes, 5 squares of nori, soy sauce, and seasonings. Plenty of a la carte options that you can add on that come after you finish the set. There’s also a nice selection of sake, a few beer options, and some mocktails (tea as well, but pretty expensive for one pot). The presentation was outstanding and we had a lot of fun experimenting with different combinations. The atmosphere of the restaurant was so peaceful, and service was attentive without being overbearing. The pieces themselves were really creative and included multiple that we’d never tried before. Easy 5 stars, we’ll definitely be back.
