For a livelier, more entertaining dining experience, where our chefs prepare your meal right before your eyes while putting on a show, join us at our steakhouse. We are the original teppanyaki/hibachi style restaurant in the state of New Mexico (40+ years) and have some of the most experienced and original teppanyaki chefs in town.
Sitting around a grill where the food is being prepared in a professional and friendly manner is always a pleasant experience. It also helps that the food is delicious. There are a lot of protein options on the menu, which makes it easy to forget about the sides that come with it. The fried rice and vegetables, the salad, and the soup are all tasty and well prepped. Prices are still somewhat reasonable, especially when the entire experience is taken into account.

This was my first Hibachi experience. My teriyaki salmon was the best cooked salmon I've ever had. We were seated immediately on a busy Saturday evening. The bathrooms were large and easy to get to. The coffee was free. The staff was attentive. Our chef wasn't really interactive but in a way that allowed us to chat/enjoy the experience together. The entrance was hard to get to (because of the sidewalk construction) from the spot that my GPS had me park. But, now that I've been there before I know where to park closer to the entrance. The place is in need of a refresh. I imagine the volume of people that they serve is hard on all the furnishings: tables, chairs, dishware, carpet, walls, ect. The tables are also close together; some of the spots are not plus size friendly. There are also a lot of tables so it is loud and very busy with back to back chairs during a busy evening. Maybe that is just the nature of Hibachi Grills? Overall, it was a positive and new experience. I would park in a different spot (behind Jason's Deli or in the parking garage behind the education store) and go at a less busy time the next time I came here.

Second and last time in here in Albuquerque before leaving the US after 3 years. I sought this restaurant out to revisit as a farewell. Sad I did.
Waited while two other tables were cleared, new guests seated and drinks brought to them, before our server asked for our drink order. Didn't get served what I ordered (though filet mignon Vs filet mignon + chicken is only $1 different).
Served and charged the wrong wine despite repeatedly saying the named brand red, only got basic cab. sav.
Final minor point chef looked over worked along with the rest of the staff and not interested as they were full the whole time we were there.
A non memorable experience to leave Albuquerque on, sad but still tasty and a lovely atmosphere watching the other chefs.

A fun place to go with a group. The food was tasty and the show was fun. It was especially nice to visit on a cold day when the grill in the middle of the group was nice and warm. It is a fairly noisy place because of the blowers so we had trouble hearing each other. But we all had a good time.

One of my favorite steakhouses in Albuquerque, NM. Over the years, this place has been consistently there for my family and and it's my Grandmother's favorite restaurant in town for many good reasons. I recommend this place to anyone from the area or from out state. There's plenty of other good options, but this place is the only two story location and they also have a sushi location next door. It's aways cool to be here during a birthday as they offer a dessert and Polaroid photo 📷to go at the end of your meal. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟's all day.

If you are thinking about making reservations. It is NOT worth it! I repeat! Not worth it! They sit the smallest parties first. I made a reservation for 5 people at 7pm. Got there 10 minutes early to check in. Waited 2 whole hours to be seated. While watching a whole crowd of parties of 2-4 people be seated first, even though I checked in before them. A lot of them didn’t even have reservations. Yes, I know the damn place is always crowded and busy. But they don’t go by reservations. I lost patience after waiting 2 hours and decided to go to Azuma. Got seated quickly with my party of 5 without reservations. Ate the exact same hibachi as Japanese kitchen. Azuma just had a much better system going. Japanese Kitchen, get it together!!

This was an amazing experience! All of the staff that we ran across were polite and professional. The food was wonderful and very much worth the money! Next time we come to Albuquerque, we definitely want to come back here! The best service that we have had in a long time, these people really know how to do it right!

Dinner was delicious; though, I miss the noodles, and an extra charge for fried rice at a Teppan grill seems insane. Our waitress seemed maybe too stretched, but the buser made up for her inattention, I wish I could have tipped him directly.
Not the restaurants fault, but diners at the table next to us were weird. A woman with crutches just took off her shoes and laid them on her companions lap, and he was sitting so far back our chef bumped him a few times. Be considerate of other diners. You aren't at home, gross.

The quality of the food at this restaurant has decreased so much so that I no longer want to eat here. The menu is very small and limited, much smaller than it used to be. I ate here this week and had a salmon bento box as well as two sushi rolls. The sushi rice was overly seasoned; it had been sweetened and was wet with rice seasoning. The salmon bento box was not tasty. They did not put any salad dressing on my lettuce. The sashimi was extremely extremely fishy. I had one small nibble and was nauseated. My tempura consisted of one sweet potato, one onion and one green pepper. The salmon was also very fishy and tasted old.

I recently visited Japanese Kitchen, a local restaurant I've frequented many times over the years and generally enjoyed. However, my recent experience left me disappointed, not because of the food or ambiance, which met my expectations, but due to a policy that I found concerning as a customer.
During this visit, I planned to use a gift certificate given to me some time ago by a friend who purchased it directly from the restaurant. Unfortunately, I was informed that, under the new ownership, the restaurant would no longer honor gift certificates issued by the previous management. As a business owner myself, I understand the complexities that can arise with ownership changes. When I acquired my own business, I assumed responsibility for pre-existing gift certificates as a matter of good customer service and to uphold the trust of our clients.
In my opinion, not honoring previously sold gift certificates places an unfair burden on customers, who should not suffer a financial loss due to ownership transitions. Beyond customer service, this approach might also raise questions regarding consumer protection laws, which are often designed to protect customers in precisely these scenarios.
I hope Japanese Kitchen reconsiders this policy, as I believe it would reflect positively on their commitment to their customers and community.

The food was great! I hadn't been there in over 20 years, so I was surprised at the atmosphere, and the general feel was sad. No one was excited to see the food made. Chef seemed sad and felt like he'd seen the scene too many times to care... I like the food but don't think I'll go back. Great pour on the drinks though!!! 😉

This was my favorite place at one time. Had not been here for awhile but went tonight and service was awful. ***I recommend Azuma Restaurant (Good service)***
1st and foremost I understand things/events can happen and I give the merchant a chance to make it right.
* MOST of the carpet is sticking/dirty.
* Roof was leaking water on the table, our clothes and our food (Group for a Birthday).
* I called to followed up on the bad food and etc for a resolution (for my food)and they basically stated no and hung on me.
Summarizing: Bad food, bad experience, filthy, and rude.
I just saw bad reviews over 2 years ago and continuing to present. All I see is Owner/management’s excuses and I do have the right restaurant for this review (all words and no action).
No excuses from owner and save it. See lame Japanese Kitchen restaurant owner’s comment below.
(Note: Some 5 star reviews been by employee’s friends and family. Manipulating the reviews.)

They visibly sighed and rolled their eyes when one member of our party said they were gluten-free and just wanted to order sushi. The floor is so sticky and soggy it is really uncomfortable to walk through. The waitress left her vape pen with the check and then half yelled at a member of our party asking if she had used it when she tried to discreetly give it back to her. As soon as I got home I felt sick. I really used to love this place but the service was rude and not accommodating. They did not make us feel welcome.

Me and my girlfriend had a reservation for 9pm july 23 2024 and as soon as we walked in the door there was a young lady with a braid who looked at her watch and shook her head at us very rude. We were seated but we weren't very welcomed at all we felt like more of an inconvenience than guests the lady that sat us down was chewing food didnt say anything just waved us over to the table we were being sat at. The server and cook for us was excellent everything else was not a good experience. The rude looks that we got as we sat there from multiple employees as they walked past us made us feel rushed. They also started vacuuming right next to us as we were eating dinner. For the price I payed I wanted a genuinely good experience especially for it being our first time there. I don't think you should have reservations available for that time if your staff can't be accommodating and kind.

Sum-up: If you're looking for a place that's difficult to locate the first time, has very expensive prices per person (expect at least $50/ person), mostly unseasoned food and hosts/waitstaff/bartenders who just really don't want you there, this is the place for you. My generous parents took my husband and I here for a special dinner. My 45th birthday and our 10-year wedding anniversary. We've been to this sort of restaurant in the past and really enjoyed them, enough to agree to the very expensive menu process. Even with reservations, all four of us were put at their bar where the bartender very obviously didn't want to be there, was understaffed, and not interested in customer service for over 45 minutes while the hostesses were not kind to my mother. When we were finally seated, we had to wait at least 10 minutes for our water in cups that weren't clean or full of water. Our waitress DEFINITELY didn't want to be there either, and after finally receiving our water (first time I've had a water order that messed up by any waitstaff), we only had to wait another half hour to order. I never received the soda I ordered twice. The food wasn't bad. Unfortunately, it just wasn't really seasoned, and the stove being much too hot made most of the food taste mildly burnt. The chef was great! He was gracefully doing his best to keep up with the waitress, who seemed like she had no interest in communicating clearly about anything. I'm lucky. My husband is a natural expert with spices, so leftovers should be great. My mother brought a small cake for the occasion and ice cream should've been served as part of the cost of dinner but only two at our table (not from our group) got any. From start to finish, with the exception of the chef, the experience left MUCH to be desired. We are going to do our very best to try to remember only the chef. We did not try their sushi bar. I seriously doubt we will ever go back, and aside from the great chef we had, I don't believe any of us would recommend this place either.

A bit understaffed, but staffing issues aside it’s the Japanese Kitchen we all know and love. Excellent food, including well cooked and prepared seafood and meats. Great for family meals as well as dates, with various seating options and menu variety for all tastes and preferences. All in all a wonderful experience at Japanese Kitchen in a great environment with great food!

DO NOT GO THERE FOR SUSHI. They hire sushi chefs with no experience. We had sushi, sashimi, steamed rice, and a beer for $73.51 plus tip (see receipt). The toro hamachi sashimi had the fish skin left on. The sushi chef didn't speak English and we had to explain to him, in Spanish, that he cannot leave the skin. He was very apologetic. We had a cheaper sashimi. The server (Darian) charged us for the more expensive one and claimed he couldn't change it. I AM RESPONDING TO THE RESTAURANT'S ANSWER and adding a photo that shows the skin on the sashimi. First: we have eaten sushi in many restaurants across the US and Japan. My wife has eaten sushi and sashimi all her life. Sashimi is not served with skin. We did NOT pay for the correct sashimi. IF the restaurant really cares they wouldn't have implied that I lied. I REPEAT DO NOT EAT SUSHI THERE.

Delicious food, good service, lunch specials. The restaurant does not have a gluten-free menu, but the staff and chefs are very accommodating at providing gluten-free soy sauce, giving me salad with lemon instead of dressing, and cooking my food separately. None of the regular sauces work for me.

We came to celebrate with our exchange girls and give them an experience that we have always loved being natives from Albuquerque. Unfortunately Aubrey was so rude and not only was she short and put off by doing her job she was laughing with coworkers about our table and it was very apparent not only by us but girls who have never been to the US. No one came to our table and when we asked to pay for our drinks it was still $30 despite the manager asking was something wrong. We were a party of 5 and looking forward to a great dining experience. I come from a family who owns a restaurant and we have all worked in restaurants in all roles and know how important customer service is. Hopefully you take these reviews serious and as an opportunity to improve with your staff. $30 was not worth the drinks and soup/ salad we didn't get to enjoy. What a sad day for Japanese kitchen after all these years with our family loving coming here. We will not be back.

Used to be our favorite place!! Most recent experience: our Server seemed to not care/rushing us, she would grab bowls out of our hands too lol. Cook seemed to really dislike his job. No smile. We brought our niece there for her birthday and it was just unfortunate it wasn’t a fun or happy time as usual. Food was okay, sushi was extremely small pieces and inside, overall just tasted horribly. Pretty bummed because this used to be our favorite but unfortunately it is going down every time we do come :(

I work with many clients and always highly recommended your restaurant to help generate business to our neighbors. However, this last experience will have me second guess this act, if you’re treating everyone the way I was treated this evening.
My husband called in our order at 6pm and by 7pm I was advised that my order was “not a priority” as a matter of fact, no call in orders are made priority. These were the exacts words of one of your servers. The only guests who are prioritized are the guests who come in with a large group. Therefore, I was told I had to wait another hour for my food, as my food I ordered at 6pm was now at another table that just came in. It didn’t even make sense to me. I immediately requested a refund, my ticket was $60+ for two adults and I drove down the street to a mom and pop Chinese restaurant with better service for half the price. What a disappointment to be told “you’re not a priority” I will be sure to also not prioritize recommending your establishment to any of my clients, colleagues, family or friends in the future. Huge disappointment to say the least.

My family took me for an early Mothers Day and immediately you could tell it was going to be a very bad experience. As we got seated, the older lady/manager carried a chair to another table and hit one of my sons in the back of the head with a chair. The waitress, I believe her name is Rachel was rude, and very pushy and this spawned from her rushing our order but she was previously asked for a sushi menu, so I told her to go ahead and get our drinks first. We waited nearly 45 minutes for our chef, but he was actually good and pleasant. The waitress never checked on us nor refilled our drinks in the mean time. I had to ask the manager lady for our waitress so we could pay and told her about the waitress on how horrible she was, she just walked away. We all had gratuity added which I understand if the service was even close to decent. We then left and I noticed I didn’t have my credit card. I went back in and the manager lady looked for it but was nowhere to be found. The waitress was at the bar so my son asked for my card and she was rude and snapped at him and then yelled at me from the bar saying I was accusing her of stealing her card. I then got closer and told her if I was accusing her of something, she would know. She then said I snapped at her and I told her over a sushi menu? And to get over it. The manager lady then interrupted and asked for my name and number and said she will look for it.
I’ve been going to this place since I was a young and it’s only gotten worse each time. And for the record, this is the 2nd time my card has disappeared at Japanese Kitchen. Sad to say, I’ll never go back.

We called to make a reservation and the hostess was EXTREMELY rude. She stated she was really busy and then hung up on us. We called back and asked to speak to a manager and she said in a very terse tone, “I just told you that we’re really busy, just leave a review” and hung up on us again. Keep treating your customers this way and you won’t be busy for long.

I normally do not write reviews ever, so trust and believe that if I am writing this, it is for good reason.
This is a very dishonest resturant (as you can tell from the other reviews). My fiancé and I came here for dinner and ordered two orders; one of the shrimp & steak along with the chicken & shrimp both with a substitution of fried rice. The chef (Hispanic male, maybe mid 40s) brought out a takeout box with him while he prepared our food over the grill, and I had assumed that the box was for us if we had extras from our order. Under that same impression, my fiancé and I both continued to tell him to put some food that we wouldn’t be able to finish or wanted to keep for later. He did not hesitate and DID NOT mention even once that the to-go box was not for me & when he finished cooking, he took the box quickly and walked straight back into the kitchen. My fiance and I asked him, why he took it back with him, especially since we told him to put OUR food in it that we are PAYING for. He lied and said it was someone else’s to-go order, that SOMEONE ELSE PAID FOR. Why would you give someone else food that I am PAYING for? Outrageous, honestly. THEN came back and switched up his story tried to say it was for his kids to gain sympathy when I asked a manager if that is normal behavior here. The manager (an elderly Asian woman) came and I explained my concern and she tried to cover up their mistake and explaining that the food the chef put in the box was “extra” and if I wanted it, that is “extra” money. She tried to explain it is one scoop per person for the dinner menu and less for lunch menu, so according to her that is why there was so much extra food that we could not have from our order. My fiance and I had more than just one scoop and I noticed everyone else in the resturant had more than just one as well. So that cannot be true. The portions are not as small/precise as she tried to make it seem. No one would charge such high prices for something that small, impossible. When I asked her how much rice is in a scoop, she said she “doesn’t know, the cook would know because he’s a professional”…sad, this is your business, as a manager, you don’t know your own procedures? I explained how this isn’t right because I am losing my money with all the extra food I told him to put in the box. All she said is “sorry” and walked away. This type of behavior is normal for this resturant. This is how deceitful businesses scam and gaslight customers.
Now, everyone, this is entirely unethical and sneaky. If this whole restaurants staff can lie to their customers, how can you sit there and trust them to eat their food? No matter if the food tastes decent to you or not, a business should not run on dishonesty and taking advantage of their customers. I will not be coming here again.

The waitress and the man refilling our drinks were very attentive but for whatever reason the cook didn’t want to serve me the food I ordered. He asked if I wanted to share my fried rice with my husband I said no so he didn’t give me any then after he went all the way around the table he asked if I wanted what was left of the fried rice which was hardly any. Then he served my shrimp to my husband so my husband had to scrape it onto my plate. This place is mediocre at best the food is not even great. We also ordered calamari and probably the worst I ever had full of oil and bigger than any chicken strip I have ever seen! Pass on this place much better places in ALB.

First experience at this Japanese Steak house. We were seated with another family at one of the large searing tables. The chef was wonderful and entertaining. The food was delicious, cooked to order, and if requested there was a separate sushi menu as well. The drinks were very good from their full bar. I recommend the steak and shrimp, but the sushi is excellent!

Did talk to a manager the next day, but he had to talk to owner and server, when it’s quite obvious on there end also that I was double charged. Fighting to get my credit back still. $191 3 way split bill, two on credit card, and one cash. Why they need the severer to. Verify. She kept the cash, and charged us twice. They never all back the banks going after them now.

I know I'm at least a little bias because I love fried rice so much.
That being said it should be much better for the local reputation it has.
Our particular chef's "tricks" were just shaking the utensils a little bit.. which was exactly as lame as it sounds lol
The food was just "fine" / normal. What was a little disappointing was the choice of beef for the #5 (chicken and beef), like if we go off just that: there's better places. Like it tasted good, but that might have just been the gallon of sauce it was in, cause you could still tell the cut of meat was cheap af vs the competition.
Ill still go back someday, just not like.. excitedly lol

It's been a while since we've been to Japanese Kitchen but our meal was great and our chef was funny. We'll be back again soon.

This was literally the worst dining experience I have had in quite some time. I called and made reservations due to having a large party a few days in advance (we were told we would be seated at two tables and agreed to this). We showed up 15 minutes early for our reservation, we were not seated for an hour past our reservation time. One table was served food and the other table was told they had to wait and see if the random two empty spaces might be filled. Even after an additional 20 minute wait at the second table we were served cold soup and wilted salad while the other half of our party was paying their check and leaving. I will NEVER come back here and will warn everyone I know to avoid this place at all costs. Such a horrid experience for my daughter’s birthday!

The service was awesome and the chef was very friendly! The restaurant noise was a bit loud, and you do have to share seats with other dinner guests. But I'm sure there is an ability to reserve more for cost. The dishes were delicious! Definitely wish to come back!

Against my better judgment I decided to give this place a second chance and it lived back up to my initial disappointment. The restaurant touts that they have superior quality to those of its competitors. That claim is a complete lie in every aspect. The meat cuts were bellow the Albuquerque average of Tappan grills and much smaller. I would be surprised if the beef quality meet the standards to even be graded select. The next disappointment is the quality of vegetables used in the fried rice and veggie side (see pic). I surely would never consider shredded carrots and diced onions quality vegetables. To make matters worse both of my visits included boring chefs that provided 0 entertainment. How this place is so popular is beyond me, but I will never go back. Tokyo Hanna, Azuma, and Hayashi are far better choices.
Update:
Management cannot accept that the sad vegetables are on their plate next to their stainless grill. Shame on Japanese Kitchen for an unprofessional response. Review changed from 2 stars to 1. I will never go back nor positively promote this establishment.

Way to expensive and super slow

Japanese kitchen responded to my review from a few days ago with "wrong restaurant" What a joke of a response. First of all the picture shows the low quality of the side of vegetables included with your teppan. The veggies in the rice aren't that shape because they are a frozen medley. The fact you cannot even recognize your own plate is a mockery. Best of Albuquerque? You're not even top 5 on Yelp. Shame on you Japenese Kitchen for your snarky remarks.

昨天晚上去吃的,厨师人手不足,等了一个小时才吃上,食材一般,味道一般(加了很多味精),特别是牛肉。价格贵,不值得。不推荐这家店。

Food was phenomenal, but the waitstaff seemed very annoyed. Had a reservation and everyone but 1 joined on time. They sat us but told us we would need to order for the late person. Then while going over our menus, before our drink order, they started taking the menus because "they ran out". But the cook was amazing, all the food was delicious. Then we had time wait another 20 minutes before getting our checks after the cook had left. No refills or check ins by waitstaff.

Cook we had didn't make an effort to entertain or say anything to capture our attention so everyone just had their own conversations not as exciting as it used to be.

I think this is supposed to be a high end sushi place but it's average. The mixed drinks we ordered were tasty but weak. The service wasn't great from our server as she made us feel like we were a bother but the sushi chef was awesome and helpful. The location is nice at night but after wanting a place to go, I think we would've been better off at the steak house in the same center.

This place used to be high quality, somewhat “elite” dining. It’s gone drastically downhill. Waitress was rude and very slow and the food was average at best with small portions and low quality meat/veggies. You’re much better off going to a chain teppanyaki restaurant.

Service was very disappointing. Quality of food was very disappointing, for what you pay for. Their is better options for this type of dinning. Lady that works in the front is very rude. 👎

Great portion size, just enough and not too much! excellent food and service. Wish I had a photo to share but I forgot to take one. Next time I want to experience the regular dinning or the sushi bar as I have heard good things about that as well.

The bartender was fantastic the food was great the atmosphere and needs some more it just looks like you're at golden fried chicken or some thank you restaurant there's no there's no atmosphere what's fear is they need to remodel and make it feel like it's sushi

This once excellent spot has sadly changed.
Several visits now have provided a roller coaster experience. The evenings seem to have better service, but I don't understand the lack of service at lunch. The hostess at lunch seems to not like her job or people... perhaps the 1st person we see should be smiling, polite...what a concept.
The quality of the food has declined, or I've become older and my pallet changed....NOPEthe quality definitely declined, go look at their ancient and dirty sushi station. On several occasions, the fish on display was less than appealing, may not be a chef, but I've had enough sushi over the years to know I'll never order when it looks like that. The sushi guy behind the counter should be polite. Not smell like cigarettes.
The portions for the price would be acceptable if the quality was there. Yes, there are many other similar restaurants. The portions at the competition are slightly larger, and the quality is comparable. Years ago, the quality was why we fell in love with JK. Smaller portions were acceptable....now your quality is gone... either bring back better food and service or just give a tad more rice....your side prices are ludicrous.
The entire restaurant could use a face lift or just a deep deep clean and repaint. The chairs are old and uncomfortable. Some sound dampening decor could help, stick it in the ceiling...
The new owners have definitely tried. Running a restaurant isn't easy. Small changes can have big impacts. It's just not what it once was. The biggest thing that kept us coming back was the service. In the past, we knew most of the team, they remembered names and seemed to genuinely care about the entire experience. Now the experience is in out for next... no refills and smaller portions.
Bring back the quality experience and food.
I currently will not recommend it. However, I'm of the old customer base who had higher standards. Hibachi one has better value and that's saying a lot.
See you in 3 months....we used to visit 3x per month...win us back please.

Absolutely love this place! the atmosphere is amazing. having the chef cook right on the table is such an awesome experience. I would highly recommend it for a first date or even an anniversary. the cooks are funny, professional, entertaining, all around amazing! the filet mignon is to die for! it's literally like cotton candy cow and I would recommend it to any meat lover! It is a bit pricey but when you compare the quality to the price it's well worth it

I guess they can't help it, but the fans are SO LOUD that I could hardly hear people. Also, even though the waitress and the chef were very careful not to include MSG or gluten in my food, I DID have a reaction (migraine type pain). I do know that they probably used meat tenderizer on the steak, and THAT either contains MSG or creates the same chemical reaction.

Food was good. However, to my horror and disgust, my 17 year old daughter told me after we got to the car that the old busser with the mustache had been giving her strange and uncomfortable stares throughout our entire time there. He had even flicked out his tongue to her which is ghastly and disgusting to even imagine!! Very inappropriate for a staff member to do that to my underage daughter. If I ever return I will make sure we do not stay if we see the same man working there!!
Edit: It has come to my attention thanks to my close friend who went to dine in yesterday that they have not fired this man. He was clean shaven, I guess given my previous description of the man which I am assuming was the establishment's solution to the problem, which does not slide with me and my family. We have been going to Japanese Kitchen for years now for every special occasion and I am thoroughly disappointed. Given the "owner's" response, I was looking forward to a change but if this is how they treat matters, it is safe to say my family, friends, and I will never be returning. Absolutely disgusted and disappointed with one of the last few remaining restaurants in the town that actually served good meals.

I loved it the only thing I did not like about this place is when you're sitting on the top floor you can see where the grease is not have been cleaned for a long time and it's dripping no less from the roof and spots were the air vents are not very appealing especially if that's dripping in your food needs to be cleaned a lot more thoroughly
