Award winner Japanese restaurant . Best sushi, best teppanyaki . Good for big group at Teppan grill. Located in the La Cueva Shopping Center cross streets Paso Del Norte & Wyoming.
Great food and environment. We also stayed past closing time on accident, and they were not rude and still friendly about it and we really appreciated that. My favorites are the New Mexico roll and 911 roll. The dynamite I'd also recommend as an appetizer. We also ordered the combo noodles that is enough for two people. Overall this is one of my favorite sushi places in the city.

I don’t normally write reviews but we had a really terrible experience. We went here to celebrate two clos family members birthdays, and had a reservation. We waited 1.5 hours just to get food started after already being seated. Then the chef came and had a really poor attitude towards us. His attitude was so poor &rude that we ended up leaving. We ate at chiles and received way better service !! Chiles for the win! We were excited to eat here but will never be back.

We split three specialty rolls between two adults at Azuma Sushi and Teppan on a Friday evening. While we usually finish three rolls between us, this time we didn’t. Unfortunately it wasn’t because of the size. It just wasn’t appetizing in any way.
We got the Live Volcano Roll. It has shrimp, crab, avocado, and asparagus on the inside. On the outside is bonito and and eel sauce, and it’s “topped with baked scallops”. The menu didn’t have any pictures, so I assumed “topped with baked scallops” meant what it does at every sushi place I’ve ever been to before, which would mean the scallops would be incorporated into the roll. Instead, the slices of the roll were placed horizontally on a plate and a pile of small scallops were piled on top of it. Neither of us enjoyed the presentation, quality, or taste. I love asparagus in specialty rolls, but the asparagus here didn’t seem crisp or of good quality. In fact, all the ingredients in the rolls didn’t seem like good quality or what I’m used to in sushi. We agreed this roll was a 1/5.
The next roll was the Boston Roll. It had lobster tempura, crab, mango, and cream cheese on the inside, with eel sauce and chef’s specialty sauce on the outside. We both enjoyed this roll’s taste, but the cut was so large you had to stuff your mouth entirely full and struggle to chew. This roll’s circumference needs to be reduced so diners can enjoy it. We agreed the taste was a 4/5 but the ease of eating was a 2/5.
Finally, we split the Aloha Roll. It had salmon, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, and pineapple, deep fried with mild spicy mayo and eel sauce. I think I would have enjoyed this roll more without the pineapple. We both gave this roll a 2/5.
Overall, this place was a disappointment, and neither of us would go back. It’s much too expensive for what’s offered. It seems like Azuma spent more money on the decor and decorations rather than quality ingredients.

So we get here and we had made sure they could seat us at 6pm and they acknowledged. We didn’t seat until 7:30. Then our waitress becomes MIA during the whole course of the meal. We ordered appetizers which was half full and came 45 minutes after the chef already cooked our meal. The chef undercooked all of the shrimp and put it all over my rice. Which I didn’t touch because it was raw. Then the waitress takes out payment which by this point I didn’t even want to pay for this because I was very unhappy. She disappears again……..25 minutes with our debit cards. Multiple people looking for her and she comes out of a back room with our cards. We mentioned the food and appetizers to her and she did not care one bit. I would stay away from the middle section and stay in the outer Grills so you don’t get that waitress. She needs to be trained before she is released to the floor. Also make sure the food is cooked before the cooks decides to place raw seafood all over your other sides in the meal.
Goodluck!

We had a 6:30 reservation, we had to wait 30 minutes to be seated and another 30 minutes before a chef was available to start our dinner. We had small children, it was most stressful. Once the chef came he apologized, a walk in large group was seated before us. If you can't honor reservations, don't take them. The only reason we stayed, it was my granddaughters birthday and she wanted to eat there.

The decor and atmosphere of the place was great. Our server was kind and attentive. Happy hour beer is a great deal. However, the sushi was lackluster. It tasted like grocery store sushi that they plated and put a few garnishes on. For the price point of their rolls I was expecting something better. We would go again but probably skip the sushi.

Holy cow, not only is this the worst sushi I have had in Albuquerque, but they charge 42 dollars for a bottle of moonstone nigori sake which is 17 bucks at total wine and is about that at Hayashi which is a superior restaurant in every way. 0 stars.

Walked in and no hostess. Long line. Walked to an employee "hi, how do we get in line for a table?" she looks for the missing hostess and then proceeded to ignore us and seat the people who had JUST walked in. Completely ignored my request to. I asked why she is seating them first? How do I get in line?" She said "I just say hi. I have a say hi all cusomer (misspelled intentionally)"..and then proceeded to continue to ignore us and seat people who Walked in behind us. Super rude. Especially because there appeared to be a line BEFORE WE EALKED IN. So great servuce for those who walked in behind us but what about literally the rest of the line? We left. I have heard the food is good. So my review reflects that. I just wont ever try it.We went to Revolving Sushi and saved some money and had more fun. There are 3 sushi places within 1 block. Their sushi can't be so good that they can't be organized as a staff. Also VERY LOUD AND DARK.

Azuma is my go to spot for teppan and sushi, it’s always good and my young kids really enjoy the chef when they put on a good show. The portions are huge, so it’s like you’re getting 2 meals for the price of one. i’ve tried a lot of different places but I keep coming back to this one, so take that for what it’s worth.

Great atmosphere! It's a nice decor. Food, on the other hand, is hit or miss. Today, unfortunately, was a miss. I ordered the fried rice, and the rice was undercooked and still crunchy. My sister ordered the filet mignon lunch portion, and it tasted like regular steak. This is the second time this has happened when I've come here and the first time I thought maybe I was mistaken but now I'm sure they use a cheap cut and just call it filet mignon to charge you more. When I tried to tell the server, she says "it's filet mignon. I've had filet mignon." 😅

I was disappointed. Usually a tepin grill includes like 1/3 rice, 1/3 vegetables, and 1/3 meat. At this restaurant it was 1/3 rice, 1/3 pasta and the other third vegetables and meat. I probably won't go back only because I don't believe in throwing a bunch of starch at people that they really aren't going to eat. Nobody should eat like that.

Went here for my dad's birthday, and we waited for 2.5 hours and never got seated. We called before and were told the wait was 20mins. We asked about every 15mins after getting there about how much longer it would be and were told each time, "15-30 more minutes." Finally, a large group came in and was taken straight to the back and sat at the hibachi before us. When asked, they said they had a reservation and it would be another hour, 3.5hrs of waiting...
On a Thursday!? They never mentioned there was another party in front of us and when asked for a definite time we would eat, since it was 730pm, they wouldn't give an answer. We asked if we should leave and they said it will only be a few minutes after the party leaves and they can seat us. Totally ruined my dad's birthday surprise, and we had to go to Dions because it was 8pm by the time we called it. Horrible service, unapologetic, dismissive, and straight-up dishonest.

Overall. The experience was fun because of the chef that was on the other grill.
However, I don't think our cook was paying attention to what he was doing.
We were there on July 5th for a birthday event. 4 adults and a toddler.
Our food came out very salty.
Our cook didn't "perform" like the others.
In his conversation, he managed to express to us everything he hated. Meanwhile, dropping "F-bombs" in front of a child.

We’ll never be back. The host was great, the waitress was great but… the chef was horrendous! Our son and his girlfriend flew in from Seattle yesterday. They wanted to go to Azuma because we’ve been there with them before and it was so fun. Not this time. As soon as the chef arrived he told us he was 60 years old and tired. He did the little egg trick and started cooking the rice. He started rambling about how he was in a coma and how much his hospital bill was. Then he started talking with his hands and let the eggs burn. Our rice was crunchy and burnt in places. We knew we were in trouble at this point. He just kept rambling on and asked where we worked and then started grilling my husband about why (my husbands place of business) closes so early. My husband had enough and finally told him we were there as a family to enjoy a nice dinner and asked him to please stop asking about his work. He said “sorry” and started talking about California. It was horrible. I personally started looking down at my plate hoping he would stop talking. He just kept rambling about nothing and everything. Our kids just zoned out. This guy was exhausting, he was an energy vampire, so boring! He sucked the energy and fun out of us. We always tip the chef $10-15 but we left this guy nothing. As soon as he was done cooking we asked for to-go boxes and got the heck out of there. We talked about how bad the experience was all night. We honestly thought we were being pranked! I’m still shocked at how bad it was. It was like being stuck in a grocery store line next to the local crazy who doesn’t stop talking to you about nonsense. I’m sure he’s a very nice guy but that is absolutely not the job for him. He wasn’t entertaining at all. I feel like we paid $150 to be tortured for 2 hours. I didn’t want to leave a review here for all to see but every time I called to let the manager know what happened all I got was “the manager is not available, how can I help you.”

The place was very nice and the waitress tried. The shashimi salmon, tuna, and albacore were good. But the rolls were a big disappointment. They were too large to eat, and some of the ingredients weren't ripe, like the mango in the boston. I'd change what I'd order if I returned, but it isn't likely.

We went with our 3 kids to eat and have a good time at hibachi. We arrived at 6:35 pm. We waited to be sat until 7:05. It was busy so we understood. Once we were sat, we were told a chef was finishing up and would be with us shortly. We waited over an hour with no apology or anything. Our entire table got up and left. They didn’t discount any of the appetizers and didn’t try and fix anything. AWFUL service and the food we had was mediocre at best…. We will never return. Chick-fil-A for the win tonight I guess.

Took my Grandson for his 14th Birthday, expecting the "usual hibachi experience". Our cook didn't speak with any of us at the table and no experience. The only thing he did was the volcano.
Boring and the food was tasteless. What a waste of money. Spent $119.00 for 4 plus $30 in tips.
I don't mind spending the money if the food is good and get the experience.
Let me add, Lina was FANTASTIC!!!! Such a sweet , lovely lady. Even got the gong out to sing to my Grandson.

Horrible experience. We have ordered takeout many times in the past and they are always late with the order. We decided to give them another try and will never again order from them. We placed an online order at 4:55 for a 6:10 pickup. Got there at 6:17 because as I said they are always a little late. The order wasn’t ready, but they said it would be right out. I waited about 15 minutes before I asked for an update. They said the order just printed out and it would be another 15 minutes. Twenty minutes later it was finally ready (45 minutes late). Unfortunately 4 of the people who we were getting food for had to leave before I could get the order home. So I had $100 worth of sushi and only about $40 of it got eaten. Asked for my money back and they offered a $20 gift card and were rude about it. No thanks because we will never be back.

Sushi was good. Everything else was terrible. There was so much salt in our food the 6 of us didn't even eat our meals. We all took boxes but we will not eat our leftovers nor ever eat there again. Pounds of food (and money) wasted. The manager was rude when we got there and questioned if our table was ready (25 Minutes after our reservation) so we didn't dare bother her with our food issue. "Chef" was either having a bad day or hates his job, maybe both. The server was friendly but only so much she could do. I'd skip this place Maybe their other location is better but I personally won't chance it.

Japanese food and Sushi in particular is supposed to be a very clean flavors and should appear very visual clean.
Here the sushi was swimming in so much souce and the ends of the sushi was a mess it was not cut properly.
Look like very American version very large quantities and in too much souce.
It looks like very fresh and generous ingredients but the result is too much

The food was okay, the service was really really bad. You could hear the employees at the bar continuously complaining about other workers and scheduling while we were trying to have dinner in the corner table. The bussers were also slamming plates down non-stop and talking across our table to the people standing behind the bar area. It was a really bad experience and we left as soon as we could, and the weird Pakistani waiter took that as an opportunity to ask us if we were leaving because we ordered too much food? It was a really horrible experience and I would never come back here recommend this place solely due to th rude staff from the door to the people who clean the tables. My boyfriend said Thank you to one of the girls who were going to clean the table and she just ignored him. Not one person here was decent.

Visit quite often and usually love taking my kids for a great show and meal. Today was definitely the worst ever trip. Gave 1 star experience but gave 2 stars as our Server Romona was awesome for how busy she was, she was everywhere but our drinks always got the correct attention on refills. Was sat about 6:15-6:20pm tonight 3/22/23. After about 35 minutes our server told us she needed us to move to a different spot as she was trying to close the area we where seated. As we finished picking up our belongings and got out of our seats to finally start moving over the hostess comes in and seats others right where we where asked to move, so frustrating putting in the effort. After 45, probably closer to 50 minutes waiting for our chef he finally comes. Like I said before the show is one reason I like to take my kids which we had the most boring unexciting chef ever. No personality, no talking to us, very bland experience that I wish I would of just asked to sit in a booth for. Then during our dinner service we where asked about how we wanted our steak temperature. My daughter had asked for medium rare, I asked for medium well. When it's time for him to start serving the steak he plates my daughters, then instantly plates mine which added to the frustration as there is no way that one plate had medium rare and the other had medium well when he severed off the same pile of steak he had cooked all together. Then when he serves my youngest kids meal plate of teriyaki steak I notice he doesn't add any other sauces to hers over our Azuma steak we ordered on the other two plates. At the point of waiting and getting shuffled around with kids to end up in the same spot I was just ready to head home. I feel if I would of voiced my feelings before getting a chance to cool off after spending almost $80 on a meal which my experience sucked sorry for the lack of words it would of been over escalated. Probably going to be some time before I can rebuild my courage to come back for another attempt as I feel I could of had a better experience spending $20 at McDonald's for our meals. Like I said before the server was the only bit of good this evening and she definitely deserves 5 stars as she was definitely trying her best with being what looked to be over worked compared to the other server working.

The chef catered to my food allergies to capsaicin. It was delicious, and the chef had a great sense of humor! There was excellent service! I highly recommend this restaurant!

First visit - really good sushi. The place was packed on a Friday at 6 pm. They had a couple of people call in sick. So it was good, it took about an hour, but the meal was worth waiting on.
The second visit - the sushi is still good, though the tuna was a little dry. The service was great. Food was out pretty quick.
3-16-23 Fish is about the same in flavor, but you can tell the "chef" is amateur or in training. The rice balls fall apart as soon as you touch them, and the meat was slaughtered. My gyoza came out already cold. My wife said the fried rice was "OK." She said the chicken wasn't prepared very well as there was a lot of gristle and tendons in each bite. And the meat wasn't seasoned properly.

We went for Sushi on a Tuesday at 7 pm, the place was not very busy as no one sitting at the bar, no one sitting at the Sushi bar, and besides a few Teppan Tables a few people at the tables. We were greeted by the hostess and we asked to sit at the Sushi bar. This is where any remote service or acknowledgement stopped. We sat for 15 minutes and finally one of the Sushi chefs said to us "she's helping other people" Really, after this long of a wait, this was a rude thing to say to us and inferred we were not important. So, with no service we walked out. Complete waste of time to attempt to go to this restaurant. Its obvious they do not appreciate their potential customers. We will never go back as other Sushi restaurants actually appreciate your patronage.

It just has excellent food, service, and atmosphere.

The San Mateo location may not be as fancy looking but it’s 1000x better than this. The place is so drafty I got a cold, the food although very good took 45 mins longer than the other location. Will never go back. Two stars only because the food is that good.

Goodluck!

The service was terrible! We got there at 1 and got out at 3:30- waitress was terrible, didn’t clear plates, didn’t serve water, we had to ask for the soup that came w it and the tappan cook had to clear bowls as the waitress was no where. They got out orders wrong and forgot drinks twice! But she was there to bring the check and collect no problem- so frustrating. We won’t be back.

The Food is just okay, But for the Money they are REALLY TIGHT ON THE FOOD, THEY GIVE VERY SMALL PORTIONS. I Definitely WILL NOT BE BACK! There are so many better and more REASONABLE PLACES TO GO. I'm NOT IMPRESSED WITH AZUMA'S AT ALL, SORRY I HATE LEAVING A NEGATIVE REVIEW BUT THEY COULD HAVE DONE ALOT BETTER. Example I asked for napkins for us and She gives us 2 one for me and one for my Wife? Enough Said, Don't waste your time here......

Horrible customer service.
Just left after our first time coming here. Our server was very inattentive, took time talking to co workers instead of serving people. Then my husband got his food and I waited 15 minutes for mine. By the time I got my food, my husbands food was cold and my sushi was obviously rushed through, still had pieces of shrimp shell and not packed tightly, so fell everywhere. Then they still charged full price for my entree. Last time going to Azuma, I’ll stick with Hibachi instead.

When we walked in we were told reservation was lost. We should have left then but manager assured us we could still be accommodated. Two hours later, no chef and no food. Terrible service!

Food was decent from the hibachi, but could use more seasoning and flavor.

Waited over an hour at a grill for a chef. Ridiculous amount of time to wait to eat since we took a little girl for her birthday.
No more salads I guess because we never got one.

Absolutely horrible experience; management claimed that we did not have a reservation, but we did, calling twice to confirm, even presented cell phone call log/history. We were placed in an overflow room that was dirty and obviously not cleaned in a very long time. We waited patiently for over 2 hours and never served. We live close by and have frequented this restaurant and have noticed a steady decline and even witnessed management arguing with staff during another visit. Should have served as a warning. Steer clear!!

Never, never eat here. They lost the reservation, scrambled to seat us. Server is overworked and doesn’t have the bandwidth to provide service. 1.5 hours and still waiting on our meal. Find another restaurant. Update: left after waiting for 2 hours. Highly recommend you spend your hard dollars elsewhere.

I had low expectations for sushi and chicken in a desert, but somehow, those expectations were not low enough apparently. To the people giving this place anything above a 2 star rating, I’m sorry you don’t know what real sushi is supposed to taste like. The chicken was so dry it was inedible. On top of that, the service was so slow I thought our waitress had died because she disappeared for like an hour. If you hate yourself and want terrible food and service then this is the place for you.

What happened to this place? Food used to be good. Staff are professional. None of these exist anymore. I never really leave reviews but I feel like Im being forced to. Besides the fact that our waitress was very nice-everything else is a nightmare.
Most importantly, Sushi used to be the best! Now they have sushi chef wearing a tank-top, - unprofessional at a fine dining restaurant - creating horrible dishes. The rice is extremely dried out, there’s literally no fish on a sushi roll. If there is, the fish is as thin as a piece of paper. There’s absolutely zero flavor to the rolls. Sweet shrimp literally tastes ridiculous. Its unbelievable how it has turned out in a few months. Long time customers wont be returning even with a discounted gift card from costco. So not worth it

Food is usually good. Service needs a lot of work. Called ahead for an order which said would take 15 minutes. Got there at the correct time but still waited in the restaurant for almost 45 minutes.

Worth the wait to eat at Habachi grill. The cooks are SO FUN!!! Gives a night out a special twist. The food was amazing. If you are GF they make it in the back so just eat at tables, it's not worth the wait. Like many places they were low on staff so drinks took awhile but the waitress left a pitcher for our water. It was hard to be bothered by it because so was so kind and working so hard. We had a great time!

well, i went dinning with my sister and we were treated well, we order and got our drinks in a well manner time. As time pass, we got our appetizers and a little second later, my sister receive her meal, i waited and waited for an about an hour and we had head out soon after that, and ask the waitress for my meal, i got a blank expression, with a simple reply, "Okay". . . no 'sorry for the inconvenience', so i was sadden... got my meal to go and ate my meal at home, the meal was great . but sadly my experience was not a good one here.

Real good food, reasonably priced. Timeliness wasn't great we did wait 40 minutes from being seated for any food. But the Chrf and food were great.

The staff was nice, the teppanyaki and sushi were OK. The karaage they offer is not karaage! Their "tori karage" is tempura battered unseasoned white meat chicken. We were expecting succulent marinated dark meat chicken as you expect for 唐揚げ. Very disappointing.

We went with a party of 9 in one of the private rooms for lunch on a Saturday. It was not busy. I and one other were the only non-Asians in the party. At first the service was acceptable. We all ordered and 7 of us received our meals in a timely manner. However 2 people who ordered the same thing (chicken with steamed rice) did not receive their lunches until we all were done. Also they were informed after 30 minutes of waiting that they were out of steamed rice. What kind of Japanese restaurant runs out of rice?! We all agreed that we won’t be back. This restaurant is fairly close to where I live and has been our go to place for sashimi and sushi for the last few years. However, they have nosedived in quality. The last time we had sushi there (2 months ago) the tuna was not fresh but had been obviously frozen, and my Japanese wife commented that they don’t know how to make sushi rice anymore. Or any rice apparently (see above).

Food was very high quality and I felt I got what I paid for. Good friendly service. I ordered the seared tuna salad which ch was very good. It came with miso soup which personally I did not care for the taste.

Drove in on Sunday to place an order for Monday at 5:00 pm.
Ordered a love boat for $79.00. Arrive to pick up order an was told it would be 45 minutes or so longer to get the order. I explained that it was to be ready at 5.
So they ask for 10 or 15 minutes more. I received a small box of sashimi only no sushi and one small California roll. I really feel cheated as I was do a lot more food. 😪 very sad an disappointed. Lied to my face and cheated me to boot.

Y'all don't walk, RUN to Azumas on Wyoming and Paseo. Ok ok fine drive hee hee but seriously I can not say enough good things about this place! The food speaks for itself but the experience and customer service we received from HENRY and CHEF MIKE was what made our night perfect! Henry is a very professional man and was on top of it all. We were welcomed by a friendly smile and sent off with a "see you soon" if I could give 10 stars I would no doubt!
