Unfortunate. Not sure why so many Chinese-run Japanese restaurants keep making the same mistake trying to do too much and ending up as master of none. I suspected this might be Chinese-run Japanese (CRJ) but wife wanted soup so I tried, but immediately upon entering and even more so when I saw the menu featuring all kinds of sushi along with ramen, I knew that I had made a bad choice - it was a CRJ.
Btw, nothing against Chinese run businesses - it’s just that they are notorious for butchering other cuisines … they often try to do Japanese food chasing after higher price (= more $), but without ever truly understanding the Japanese cuisine & its philosophy.
Let me elaborate (I’m Korean and love & respect all 3 cultures)- Japanese food requires high quality ingredient and precision. It’s reflected in every aspect of their lives. If you’re gonna do ramen you need to really learn ramen. (That goes for every cuisine yes, but Japanese has higher bar than most) I get that majority of Americans in the suburbs aren’t New Yorkers and aren’t as discerning, but on our recent stopby we were sorely disappointed with just lack of attention to detail and truly awful ramen.
1. Atmosphere (2/5) - Where are we… 90s hibachi joint en route to Niagara Falls? Why so dingy and dark? What’s with the over the top, chintzy decor? Japanese = minimalism. Less is more. It was very an awkward vibe (tiger mural anyone?) that tried to be something w/o thinking through.
2. Service (3/5) - Server immediately forgot to bring a hot oil when I asked despite the restaurant being only 30% full on a late Saturday afternoon. When we expressed utter disapproval of an ingredient, she did nothing to make our experience better either. Ramen also took more than 15 min to come out on a slow late Saturday afternoon only 25% full.
3. Food (2/5) - like I said I was already bracing for the worst, so I figured I order their namesake ramen.
Shokudo Ramen (3/5) wasn’t terrible per se. It had flavorful broth and noodle was cooked well. The problem was in utter lack of topping - there were literally two pitifully thin (1/8”) slices of pork that were decent but 30% fat. Two pieces of sad pork in a $16(?) ramen bearing the name of your Ramen restaurant…? Are you kidding me?!
But unfortunately it gets worse- wife ordered the Beef Ramen (1/5). It literally had a Chinese-style braised beef that must’ve been from a cow hoof… it was thick and tough with barely any taste. And the broth had that metallic fake broth taste (bullions) that simultaneously was somehow really watery and flavorless… so much so that we put the said hot oil to barely salvage it… to not waste food. My wife barely had 1 piece of rubber and gave the other one piece to me and I couldn’t finish it. I should also mention that kind of beef flavor works in Taiwanese beef noodle soup, not Japanese ramen.
We desperately wished that we had gone with my first instinct of going to Shake Shack a door down but you know, wife said soup.
This isn’t to say you won’t enjoy this place - if you don’t know what’s up then it’s okay. Some don’t care and I think it’s perfectly fine. But as for this ramen aficionado? First and last time.
If you have respectful taste for ramen and sushi, look elsewhere. (I didn’t try the sushi but why would I ever order sushi at a CRJ ramen place? Seeing what they did to ramen, I don’t have to try to know)
I don't want to be mean and I wanted to like this place, but true foodie tells the truth.

Shokudo is a good place to grab Japanese food: good food nicely presented, good service with whimsical decor that anime fans will appreciate.
Shokudo instantly differentiates itself with its unique ambiance. Upon walking in, you are met with cherry blossom trees, murals, a large rattan lounge chair and lots of anime figures posed at the cashier, behind the sushi bar and in shadowboxes above the booths. The owner's love for Japanese pop-culture definitely shines through. I like how the open dining space is broken up by traditional-looking wooden partitions.
The food is good. We came for an early dinner and ordered:
- spicy tuna roll
- shrimp tempura roll
- rainbow roll
- teriyaki chicken
- teriyaki shrimp
- ramune (Japanese soda)
Spicy rolls at sushi restaurants are generally not spicy at all, I find, perhaps to cater to local tastes. However, the spicy tuna roll at Shokudo was noticeably spicy and to my liking. The vegetables that came with the teriyaki dishes, however, were bitter for some reason. Perhaps they were pre-frozen. Despite this, the food was generally good - I'd give it a 4.5 stars. As you can see from my pictures, everything was nicely plated.
The server was nice enough and we were promptly attended to.
Shokudo is worth your visit. The food is good and the unique atmosphere mixes the traditional and anime culture for an interesting experience. I didn't have the ramen, but I'd like to return to try it!

Service was good but long wait for food due to crowd. Sashimi apertizer was fresh and gyoza was good. Ramen was tasty and good portion for the price. Chashu was done well.
Lots of parking in the lot. The restaurant is located on Highway 17 so heavy traffic around dinner time on weekdays.

If you don't know how to cook, please don't open a restaurant. Way over rated and led me to believe they bought ratings. Tamaki was totally wrong, spicy fish tamaki looks like moon sand compound and no rice at the bottom. Ramen soup base was bland and worst than instant noodles soup power pack🤮. Noodle has wrong textures. Chinese operation and no sign of Japanese tradition. The only good thing is the low price since the owner knows its poor quality. 1 star. Don't come here and it should not exist in NJ.

The food was great, the place was new and clean with fun decor.
But… There were 4 orders for the 4 of us. Unfortunately 2 sushi meals arrived before the other 2 meals. My husband and son were finished their meals before my daughter and I received our meal. All meals should have been brought at the same time. My daughter’s meal came even later (5-10 min) than mine and was the incorrect order. I hope the service improves because everything else was great. Maybe they had an off night. We will go back again and clearly state we want all meals brought at the same time.

Newly opened restaurant on NJ-17, really nice place, they did an amazing job of creating a good ambiance, with hint of cherry blossom. The walls have different Japanese wallpapers and lots of Anime character dolls. We came for Sunday dinner, it wasn’t crowded.
The menu has bunch of ramen, good options between pork, chicken and veggie broths. Lots of sushi/sashimi available as well. We ordered the chicken karaage and takoyaki for appetizers. Both were really good. Not over fried. Karaage came with red chili sauce.
For entree, tried the Shio garlic ramen with chicken. It was good portion, good noodles, broth seemed creamy. Next time I have to try the spicy version. Cutlet was nicely cooked, not over fried. Also got the Eel Dragon roll. The plate was beautiful. Came with an extra salmon roll on the side. I liked the sushi more than the ramen. It was so well made. Had really good taste overall.
Their service is excellent. Food came out really fast. Except summer roll, that takes some time to prepare, others came out within few minutes of ordering. There’s 5% discount for paying cash. Really good place to dine with family and friends.

Almost flavorless ramen broth - we got one pork-based and the other was chicken-based. The Karage chicken was extremely oily and the meat was super chewy and dry. We returned the Karage and they were nice enough to take it off our bill. Went in on a cold evening to satisfy our Ramen craving - came back disappointed.

I brought my son here for his birthday. The ambiance was nice. The waitress was very kind and attentive. She even gave my son a free cake for his birthday. My son said the sushi was ok, though the crab meat was imitation crab. I got the curry chicken meal it was not good. The chicken was breaded and the curry sauce was not real curry. The place is nice but you should stick to traditional Japanese meals.

Located in a business building with a non-descript facade, I was pleasantly surpised with the mood once we walked in the door. The food was great and we really enjoyed it. More people should come here. I'm not the biggest ramen fan but it was delicious. I had the Chicken Curry katsu and it was great. I did not try the sushi yet but next time for sure.

I really like the food here. It was very delicious so 4/5 star for the food. The server though was very very very very rude. Honestly this is the worst service I’ve received. As we entered the restaurant, the server didn’t even greet us. She had a very rude face on as if she was forced into coming to work. She had a very bad attitude but we ignored it as we didn’t want to ruin our day. I had ordered karage chicken and when she came with my order she literally slide it in a very disrespectful manner I ignored it. We wanted to order desserts and we tried calling her but she was busy on her phone. Again while leaving she gave us our bill and I left the cash but she took so long to collect it so we had to go to the counter she took the check book from me and I was waiting for her to give me the change back but she was busy with something which I completely understand so I waited for her to finish what she was doing on the register. An elderly guy came in and she was still doing something at the register and she just says “sit wherever you want” in a very rude tone again to the elderly man. At last she asked for a tip which I didn’t wanna leave because of her nasty attitude. So she gave me the change in a very disrespectful manner saying “Oh my goodness” in a very nasty and aggressive tone. I left without saying anything. This was the worst experience because such negativity actually ruins your day. It was not even busy, there was no one when we came in so I don’t understand such a negative attitude towards the only customers coming in. Anyways the food was really good but please work on the customer service. My friends have had the same experience with the same server the last time they visited and even tho they tipped her she still had that bad attitude. The name of the server on my receipt is Sophia and we visited around 2:50 pm on Friday which is August 9, 2024.
Reply: This was the first time I visited with my friends (friends who have visited before and according to whom they have tipped the server but still received bad treatment) . So I would really like to see the “records” you’re talking about. Also I still hope you can work on your costomer service instead of being rude to customers who pay almost 100$ for the food. Tips are given for the service that is provided and not for the food since we are not eating for free but the server was honestly rude so I don’t see a point in tipping the server. Also not tipping the server does not justify the horrible unprofessional behavior since we are not eating for free, we are paying for what we order. I hope you guys can be a little bit more professional and take the honest criticism. Thank you.

I have had two different ramens from here and both were exemplary. Misu vegetable ramen is perfect comfort food. Tonkotsu vegetable ramen is made with a spicy broth but it is also vegetable-based. For both visits, I had it vegan style (no egg) and it still had complex flavor profile and left me satisfied with my micro and macro nutrient goals.

Food is okay, but the waiter and waitress are terrible. Barely said a word to me during my entire dinner. They are like leave your dish on the table and turn back and leave. No welcome , no enjoy, no how is everything. By the end they left the check to me and turn and leave, no have a good night . I wanted to tip $0 but they are too young for me to bring trouble with. Finally I tipped as instructed on the receipt. The food there is not cheap, the owner needs more experienced people. Not going to return.

Good food in a relatively quiet space. Ramen is flavorful and portions are large. Not the best ramen I've ever had, but as someone who doesn't eat pork it can be hard to find ramen I can eat. This place offers good options for those not interested in pork, with chicken broths and beef.

Disappointed in the beef ramen, the meat tasted bland and stale. The sushi was disappointing too. Unjustifiably overpriced.

Went there for a late night meal. Honestly, the food was ok. Nothing really stood out, I ordered a chicken katsu curry which came with miso soup. The miso soup tasted like it was packaged since the seaweed was very hard and crunchy. The curry was okay but there wasn’t enough to support the rice and katsu. The meal cost $20 with tip but realistically it should’ve been a little lower.

It was our first time here and we had a great experience, One of the major reasons we tried this place is because they let you substitute your noodles with udon and I love udon noodles. The wait staff is very kind and very attentive. I cannot wait to go back and try the other stuff on the menu. Now the next time I go there and they let us get more udon after we finish what we had then this will be our new ramen spot.
P.S.I did not ask this time around because I was full.

Seriously disappointing ramen. I didn't know it was possible to make something that was both spicy and tasteless - it tasted like someone forgot to add any seasoning to the food. Price is way too high for what it is. I spent $18 for the takeout ramen and the portion size was not too big. In Japan, you can get a 2x bigger bowl for half the price.

Tried out this new spot while in the area, and all I can say is that I have a new favorite sushi spot. We got seated immediately once we opened the door and entered the restaurant and we loved how nicely decorated it was. The vibe of the restaurant was an added benefit. I stumbled upon this tiny sushi spot, tucked away in a quiet corner, and oh boy, am I glad I did! This place is a hidden gem that serves the most mouthwatering, taste-bud-tingling sushi I've ever had the pleasure of devouring.
The moment I took my first bite, I knew I was in for a treat. The flavors exploded on my palate, a perfect harmony of sweet, savory, and umami that left me craving more. The fish was fresher than fresh, the rice was cooked to perfection, and the presentation was almost too beautiful to eat (almost!).
What sets this place apart is the love and care that goes into every single piece of sushi. You can taste the passion and dedication of the chef in every bite. It's clear that they're not just serving food, they're serving a piece of their soul.
I want this place to thrive! I want the world to know about this hidden gem, so they can experience the same culinary bliss that I did. The prices are reasonable, the service is top-notch, and the atmosphere is cozy and intimate.
If you're a sushi lover like me, do yourself a favor and seek out this hidden gem. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you. I'm already planning my next visit and I can't wait to indulge in more of their culinary magic.
Let's get the word out and support this amazing spot! They truly deserve to succeed, and I'm honored to be a part of their journey.

We just stumbled into the place after going to staples and OMG the salmon was incredible! Honestly better than sushi double the price. And a generous portion. I was blown away! The soy sauce also had a really good flavor to it. Not sure if they do anything different with that but it was truly delish lunch!

Very much enjoyed our experience here. Great parking near the highway. Service was very fast. The Shokudo Raman was flavorful- easily one of the best broths outside of the city I’ve had. Sushi rolls were also very good. Would not recommend the Shokudo roll if you don’t like almond- only roll that wasn’t like by everyone at our table.
Our friends had the chicken Katsu with curry which looked good. They also provided a complimentary orange cut to look like a bear which was sweet! 🐻 Looking forward to our next visit here to try the other Raman!

Even though it was near closing time, the food was prepared fast, packaged very well, and tasted delicious/fresh!! Very polite host greeted me at the front desk. Fair prices for the food quality. I'll be back for sure and will recommend this place to friends! (Also small parking lot in the front is a bonus)

karaage was not impressive. but ramen was actually pretty good. borth is good. chasu was torched so i like that as well. however the tamago was over marinated to a point where yolk was dark and salty. noodle is slightly over cooked to my taste but not inedible and overall was pretty good.
i wish they pull up the blinds. let the interior shine and get some natural light into the dining room. it would feel more welcoming and warm. especially during down time.
kind server.

Tonight was our first experience at a Ramen restaurant. We chose this one because of the reviews. And they were all right. Definitely worthy of a 5 star review. The waiter explained the menu, answered our questions and was just wonderful. We loved everything about the meal and will definitely be back to try more dishes. And we loved our orange bear. Our only regret was not asking our waiters name because he deserves to be recognized in our review.

This place surprised us. We were in the area and wanted something Asian for lunch. Google Maps gave this an average 4.7 star rating and we decided to give it a shot. Both my wife and I ordered their tonkashu Raman, not expecting it to be superior, but we were wrong. The broth is delicious and avoided the overpowered MSG feel prevalent in Raman restaurants. The noodles are perfectly chewy. Service was reasonably efficient and the waiter showed up twice to check on us. The decor is pretty interesting as well. Overall, a pleasant experience.

Food is good. Prices are astronomical, and on top of it they lied about the price about taking out food. My wife was too nice to leave it there.
Be careful with those people.

Great Ramen place! This might be our new favorite! Restaurant was modern, clean, fun decor with anime figures, and all the food was delish! No leftovers! We had a party of 5 adults 3 kids and a baby, and they were so accommodating. The waitress was so sweet with the baby! Awesome apps too. Definitely going back.

Delicious ramen! We ordered the Shio Garlic Ramen, the Tan Tan Spicy Ramen, the pork gyoza, and the pork steamed buns. The gyoza and buns were amazing. The Ramen broth was so flavorful and delicious- one of the best I’ve ever had! It was savory and not salty like other ramen places we’ve been to. The staff was attentive and very sweet. I’m excited to try out their sushi! I would highly recommend!

Worst teriyaki chicken I ever had ….surprised to know that it’s a leg portion and chicken tasted like rubber ….left it andwaitress didn’t even bother to offer some other dish or something just said oh no. It was empty on Friday afternoon that should have warned me. Not sure about other dishes but this will be my last visit.

We have been looking for a good ramen restaurant and now we have one. We started off with a sushi appetizer followed by a seafood and a beef ramen. Everything was excellent. We are looking forward to going back and roaming through the menu to see what other delights it contains. If you love Japanese cuisine as we do you really should try this place. You won't regret it. Service was fast and courteous.

This restaurant has amazing ramen, my favorite is the Tan Tan ramen. The broth is real broth that's made in-house, so it is incredibly flavorful, and the noodles are a great texture. My husband also had their sushi, and he said it was super fresh and delicious. The decor is modern, clean, and comfortable. Definitely give them a try!

This place is simply awesome. Accidentally discovered it when I visited the adjoining Shake Shack.. Their sashimi is some of the best I've had locally. We got the tonkotsu and the Shokudo ramen bowls... Delish! My go-to ramen places are in Fort Lee and NYC.. but looks like we have a new family favorite!

Service is perfrct! Atmosphere is great! Food just fell a little bit short for my tasting. I ordered the Shokudo Ramen w/ pork. The broth was a bit bland but the meat was very flavorful! The noodles was cooked perfect as well. The ajitsule tamago (egg) was flavored great as well. Great food for the cold weather. Great meal overall! would definetly come back to try their sushi or other ramen.

What a pleasure it was eating here. The fish tasted very fresh, the ramen and great flavor and the steamed buns? Excellent.
The atmosphere is very nice and the service is great They make their own soy sauce. If I could, I would bottle it and take it home. Not salty at all, and a sweet taste . I am looking forward to going back

Happen to noticed the sign driving by so made a note to come back. Always on the hunt for ramen places :D
We stopped in tonight, a cold night.
Karaage - bit greasy, the flour was flavorless, if it wasn’t served with a dipping sauce we might not have eaten it…
Miso Ramen - broth was ok, there wasn’t much miso flavor, more like just creamy Tonkotsu flavor…. The chashu was not tender… it should be softer… The egg was good, would have liked more than a half egg, very flavorful on its own.
Spicy Ramen - hubby got this and I actually preferred it, the broth is creamy and just the right spicy, it was more flavorful than the miso... But the same problem with the chashu… Because it was a cold night hubby said the ramen was not as hot as he expected. And honestly my ramen was hotter… weird since they came out at the same time.
Honestly it was 2.5 Star, unfortunately that is not an option, because the broth was tasty and they do have a fish cake which I only just realized that I have not had them in some time… everyone is leaving it out…. Service was good, they kept coming back to check on us.
I saw the high rating and had high hopes for a great Ramen restaurant. Should have paid more attention to who was doing the reviews, most were none Asians… and in the restaurant, I was the only Asian face not working there…

Well decorated restaurant that creates a nice environment for dining. Service is very attentive and kind. Food has been very good. Ramen broth taste will be up to the individual, but I found it clean and not salty which is my style. Sushi was solid. It is becoming a place I like to go to often.

Good sushi. Not so good raman. Overall it was mediocre at best. Hot team came out lukewarm

Ordered takoyaki, shrimp shumai, spicy tuna handroll and Angry Red Dragon. Best takoyaki in town, the outside dough has an amazing crunch with a smooth dough inside with the right proportion of chopped octopus.
Shrimp shumai was good, nothing special but I want to rave how great their spicy tuna handroll was! It was just so smooth with a generous portion of the tuna. Barely any rice at all. I highly recommend you get a handroll. YUM

First time here. Waitress was nice. Got the beef ramen. I asked if there was MSG in it and they confined no several times. I have an allergy to MSG. Moments after eating it, my face swelled up and felt like it was on fire. The broth was almost thick and creamy. Three tiny thin pieces of beef maybe 2 ounces. Half an egg that tasted fermented. Overall poor quality. I had to wait 20 minutes to run my card because someone before me was putting a huge order in. Only one computer system ?

Entering the place, the ambiance was very captivating. I love the color scheme! As we were being served, they were very accommodating with our requests (it wasn’t very complicated requests but it is a kind of request that not a lot can alter, which I understand of course. But it was great that they were very accommodating for sure!)
The food is very delicious! It surpassed our expectations and we would highly recommend anyone and everyone to visit this place. We would definitely come back here!!!!
Also, their ramen broth is made fresh everyday!

Really solid ramen offering on route 17. The sushi also looks good, but I haven't had it.
The decor is nice. I spent a lot of time trying to identify all the anime figures on the wall.

Ordered the shio garlic Ramen with adding sweet corn and shrimp tempura. The broth is where most of the flavor is and it was delicious. The garlic was string enough to taste but not overpowering. You can taste the freshness in the ingredients. After I finished my meal, I'm full but not bloated. The customer service was great as well as I was checked on by both the waitress and the owner. I'll be coming back to try other ramens!

The staff is very nice and courteous making sure everything will flow as easy as possible, they are prompt in checking to make sure your meal is okay and have no issues.
Ramen is good rich and balanced, noodles are smooth and perfectly chewy with the right firmness. Toppings are very well done and perfectly meshes well with the ramen itself, not conflicting or fighting with each other.
Overall, good perfectly balanced ramen without compromising any main points
