This place has something for everyone without being cheesy. The menu had a good amout of options without being over bearing. I got the Cuban porkchop it was delicious cooked perfectly!

The duck had no flavor. The 26$ burger was so dry I could barely get it down . . Also, the burger is listed at 18$ on line on their website. The waitress said I could substitute sweet potatoe fries for French fries and when she messed that up, she said " you still want em?" The waitress was so bad that she actually got in the way of our dining experience. I waited for a fork...waited for my fries...a spoon...she could care less about our dinner. And on top of that ...the food actually was awful. Steve and Cookies blows this place away! We only came here cause Steve and Cookies is closed. Don't waste your time.

I have no idea how so many people can rate this place so highly. It’s just not the case. Everyone I know in margate says Tomatoes is a fun place for drinks and for the scene but the food is terrible. On this visit I sent back my entree 2X and gave up. It was so tough and overcooked that I couldn’t cut it. The waitstaff are overworked and can’t really take care of you. The decor is nice and it’s always busy here but a bit more attention to the food quality is needed. For $50pp on average customers deserve better.

After closing the tab, the kid bartenders would not return my card. They claim my card was "accidentally thrown out." It seems Tomatoes staff may be operating a scam to steal credit cards. I have attempted to contact them several times, but they will not return emails/calls. I have reported them to Visa for a fraud investigation. I am now forced to close my card and deal with all of that.

I hate having to write this review, but I have to. I've never had such an overpriced and poor quality meal. The wine and dirty martini were great, as were the bartenders! And the french fries were delicious. But the burger was overdone, covered in ketchup, the bun was mealy and gummy. The pad thai was the worst pad thai I've ever had... the egg in it tasted like an overcooked thick omelet. The sauce barely had any flavor. The carrots were hard and seemed likely previously frozen. For $26, it felt like highway robbery! Sadly we won't be coming back to Tomatoes, at least not until they have a new chef!

The food was not to my liking . The shrimp cocktail was like rubber you can tell it was frozen and not fresh. My steak I ordered it medium rare and it came back well done then had to ask for it to be cooked again but they got it right the second time but for 55$ it should have been cooked correctly the first time . The wedge salad was okay but the bacon was not crumbled and was extremely salty they just gave you big pieces which I have never experienced . I say go to Ruth Chris or STK or even McCormicks in Harrahs any one of those would be better than this . The price point and the food don’t match . For the price point everything should be fresh and without issue . The drinks were good and the bartenders are very friendly the hostess was very sweet my issue was with the chef and the quality of the food that didn’t meet the mark .Other than that I give this place a 5 out of 10 but that is just my opinion try it and formulate your own .

Tomatoes in Margate is one of my favorite spots. I have been coming for years. The sushi is absolutely top-notch, fresh, and bursting with flavor. And don’t even get me started on the Key Lime pie; it’s the perfect balance of tart and sweet, a must-try dessert! Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

Tried a new place at the shore. Tomatoes. Looked pretty encouraging on Resy. Overall it was good, maybe very good?! Service was excellent.
Our waitress Chris was top notch.
Ambiance was not great for us. We didn't realize this was more bar than restaurant (with live music, a huge bar, and very kid friendly). For us this ended up being a loud environment where we had to yell over the out of control kids that were moved next to us. The food was pretty good, maybe slightly unrefined but tasty. My grilled octopus was mostly very good with just one piece being a little "mushy". My baked duckling came with excellent grilled asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes.
The duckling itself was more like roasted chicken to me than true duck breast but I still ate all of it. The blueberry pie was very good (not Steve & Cookies great though
168). Generally the food portions were too big (I know, complaining about too much food!). I am not sure we would rush back since they have fine dining prices in a local bar setting, but we were glad we tried them!

Been a long time patron of Tomatoe's, but the menu is becoming a bit too eclectic for us. Miss some basics they used to have for the non-sushi eaters, which was so helpful; such as the amazing spinach & artichoke dip, jumbo fried shrimp, etc. Can't see us going there as much.

A Margate fixture, Tomatoes ha served consistently delicious dishes for a demanding clientele over several decades. The waitstaff is professional and attentive. The sushi is fresh and well portioned. I had an absolutely delightful experience at Tomatoes restaurant in Margate City, New Jersey. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was warm and inviting. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the exceptional service provided by our waitress, Ashley. She went above and beyond to ensure our dining experience was nothing short of perfect. Her attentiveness, knowledge of the menu, and friendly demeanor truly elevated our evening. The culinary creations were equally outstanding – each dish bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Tomatoes is a must-visit destination for a memorable dining experience. Five stars all the way!

ZERO stars if I could give it. Kristen, the manager, targeted me from the moment I walked into that place. She had a miserable scowl on her face. As I ordered food I could literally feel her looking me up and down out of the corner of my eye. I had 2 kids with me. We sat and ate peacefully. After eating, about 30 minutes later, I approached the bar for a seltzer drink and the bartender told me her manager Kristen had “flagged me”. I was completely dumbfounded. I am almost 40 years old and have never, ever, ever, ever been flagged. I approached Kristen to ask under what premise she made such a decision? She finally answered “the way you ordered your food”. She doesn’t know me or how I speak. My friend, who was with me, is a local and well-known bartender and was completely disgusted as well. I won’t be returning and I will definitely tell all my close friends and family to never give a dime to Tomatoes.

It was obnoxiously crowded + loud with the DJ blasting but it was the Saturday night after Labor Day so i guess that's what the villagers want.

The food: SO DELICIOUS!! Split a burger and the pork chop with my friend. Both were so tasty and the pumpkin gnocci w the pork was very good.
The service: once we were seated, service was good. We did have a 6person reservation for 9p but didn't get seated til almost 945; but the hostess was nice about it + worked with us to seat us further away from the music ("upstairs" aka 5 steps lol, towards the back of the restaurant)
The drinks were fine - the first mezcal marg i got from the front bar was pretty good; the passionfruit-mezcalita was not that great.

Overall the food is good but unless you're in a party mood, don't go on Saturday night

The negative about this restaurant was that appetizer ordered from the sushi bar took almost 2 hours to be brought to the table. This caused all of our dinners to be held by the restaurant for 2 hours! When we asked to see the manager, she had Alex come out. Alex stated that she was “technically” the owner, not the manager! Seems better right? Wrong! The only thing she said was “I’m sorry.” She offered to do nothing at all. She just stood there and repeated - I’m sorry! Didn’t suggest anything to make things right! We even mentioned that it was our first time all the restaurant and still she couldn’t figure out what to do! Amazingly disappointing!

Suggest you think twice about going to this restaurant, because despite the excellent food, a manager/owner that doesn’t know how to get out of a paper bag, ruins the entire experience. Also, if you have any issue whatsoever - don’t count on anything other than an “I’m sorry!” We won’t be returning, nor recommending this restaurant to friends/family.

Sushi Experience №91

It took almost two hours to get one sushi roll as an appetizer. When we asked for a manager, Alex (the “technical owner”) came over and only offered an “I’m sorry.” The waitress, who was very nice and felt bad, was able to eventually get them to take off our drinks. Although the food was good, the restaurant was very loud, it took an ungodly long and unacceptable time to get our food, and the “technical owner” Alex made the experience one to make sure we will never return.

Title: A Disappointing Dining Experience

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

My recent visit to tomatos was nothing short of a disappointment. From the moment I walked in, the experience was marred by a series of unfortunate events that left me frustrated and regretful of my decision to dine there.

First and foremost, the service was incredibly slow. Reservations.. whats the point they dont honor them. 8:30 resy.. they laugh and you wait an HOUR..

When the food finally arrived, it was a letdown in every aspect. The presentation was lackluster, and the dishes looked nothing like the appetizing pictures on their website. Not only was the appearance a disappointment, but the taste was also underwhelming. The dishes lacked flavor and seemed to be hastily prepared.

To make matters worse, after finishing my meal, I felt incredibly sick. It was evident that the food had not been prepared with proper hygiene standards, leading to an unpleasant aftermath that lasted for hours.

Additionally, the ambiance of the restaurant was far from pleasant. The atmosphere felt dull and lifeless, with no effort made to create a warm and inviting environment for diners.

In conclusion, my experience at tomatos was a complete disaster. Slow service, tasteless food, and the unfortunate aftermath of feeling sick make it impossible for me to recommend this restaurant to anyone. I hope my review serves as a wake-up call for the management to address these issues and improve the overall dining experience for their customers.

We came down kidless for our 20th anniversary and looking for a place to go out to. Tomatoes was closed but we were trying to peek in window because we heard good things about it. We were approached by a gentleman watering flowers out front and he asked if we wanted to see the inside. He proceeded to takes us on a whole tour of the inside and then come to find he was the owner, Carmen. We were so impressed we came back for dinner the next night. We did not have reservations, but apparently from what we heard the God's were shining on us because we got a great corner spot at the bar. Our bartender Doug was beyond awesome. I asked for a drink they didn't have and he proceeded to mix things to get me what I wanted and it was delicious. Seafood platter was great and Sushi was amazing. Of course we had to try espresso martini that there known for and their key lime pie and it was all jaw dropping. Great time and wanted to give a shout out to Carmen and Doug for making it a great experience.

I went to this place with friends to just have a fun time and catch up. However, Mark Andrews was there and the place treated him like royalty. My friend went to get a picture with him and he told us to screw off and then security kicked us out for just talking to him. The security team was NOT looking out for our well being and health and shoved me in the bar and my friend to the curb. There was no respect and they did not say anything before using physical force. I do not recommend this place because they value celebrities over their daily customers. Drinks could be better, hospitality could be better, and drinks could be better.

The waiter who was caring for our table was very polite and Experienced, unfortunately most of food was not approved by most of the people on the table (table of 8) first took 1 hour to be served, when they came either cold or not well done. The first red flag was a sign right in front of the door prohibited stroller because they want to make the restaurant look fancy while squishing tables that are too close to each other. If I could would give 0 starts I would. This is not a baby friendly restaurant, If you have a baby that is less than 6 months that needs a stroller to keep quite don't come to this restaurant so you are going to have to deal with very rude hostess as soon as you step in and there was not need to talk to costumers like that just because of a stroller. I had to leave basically and wait for my family outside while they were trying to celebrate a birthday inside on father's day. I know hostess are just following rules, but being polite is also part of basic education.

One of the best restaurants in New Jersey, certainly the most consistent.

Everything I’ve ever ordered has been tasty, timely and served with a warm smile. As far as entertainment goes, if you come on a Friday or Saturday, there’s people watchin galore. From the newly divorced to the newly engaged, and everyone in between, there’s something for everybody.

The tuna cracker is unrivaled and by my accord, one of the best dishes in America.

-The group of hostesses was polite, the individual young hostess in a leather jacket who sat us was snippy, dismissive, and demanding. Our server Charlie was very nice and apologized profusely for the hostess.

-Waited 1h 15m for the food to be served. Seemed to be the trend with most tables that night.

-Food was bland for 6 of 8 entrées, and a mix of slightly overcooked to grossly overcooked, with some sides or ingredients being stale. Not acceptable at any price point, and particularly not for the "premium" prices charged.

None of the 8 in the party will be returning.

Hostess and wait staff very helpful and welcoming. Food delicious and prices reasonable.
We were greeted immediately, checked in for our reservation by the hostess and because we were early went to the bar for a drink. The hostess found us to point out there was an open seat at the bar where we could sit.
Waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, food options and clear about any delays at the bar or sushi station. (Everything arrived sooner than he expected).
The sushi was delicious! The Chilean sea bass also delicious. My husband had the burger which was a combination of meats and was flavorful and filling.
Dessert was another temptation and since all desserts are made on site we could not resist. It was worth it. Coconut cream pie and peanut butter pie.
We had 3 drinks with our meal and all things considered we were expecting the bill to be more.
If there is any down side I’d say it was how busy the restaurant was and it was still hopping when we left. If you’re looking for an intimate meal I would not go here. It was full and tables are a-little close. We were part of our neighbors conversation(not by choice).
However, for the number of people it was not super noisy.
Will I go back? Yes. Did I enjoy everything we ordered? Yes Do I feel I received value for what I paid? Yes.

We spent close to two hours waiting for food to come out, only for our server (who was either on drugs or is just truly that awful at her job) to completely forgot a meal for one member of our party. His food came out 30 mins after we asked why he didn't receive his order. If you're celebrating something, definitely do not waste your time. Our server was overall rude, lazy, and had no regard whatsoever for the guests she was serving.

I’m a New Jersey guy all of my life and I’m always looking for good food which the state is known for in my opinion. I usually do not like going to margate because my fastest route involves the toll to get into the town which I think should be waived for locals but who am I. My first measure for any upscale dinning establishment is the ability to make a good cocktail. I’m a Manhattan guy and this place made a good one. They passed the first test. For the appetizer we did the octopus tacos it’s small you might want two for a table but otherwise really good. We also did the muscles in Thai curry which were on point, I never do red sauce with my muscle it’s got to be a curry or white wine. I had a poke bowl for dinner which was high quality sushi grade tuna. My family got the Cuban pork chop so I think I messed up and should have got one too because the flavor was amazing. This place has something for everyone if your trying to be healthy like me, there are plenty of options if you want to go all out you can do that too.

On the fly, heading down to AC last night (NY's Eve), decided last minute to call Tomatoes and see if they could seat myself and my date at 6 PM. We were excited to eat there, as haven't been there in ages and used to really love it. Happily, they were able to promptly seat us. The place seemed to be much larger than we remembered it to be and the menu has completely changed, which disappointed us as we are not big sushi fans. My date was happy with his entree (bronzino) but his mussels appetizer was a complete rip-off...half the shells were empty! Upon complaint, the waitress did bring him a ton more, but really?? As for me, I had the tomato soup which was one of the specials, and it was only lukewarm, as was my entree of chicken parm. Cookie desert was the only hit of the meal. This place is not what it used to be and the meal was a disappointment. Service was good, however.

Always a good sign if they’re packed on a Saturday night in December! Great food and service from sushi to fine plates of grilled fish and Italian to sports bar food too. Something for everyone and it’s clearly working. Service was outstanding. We had the crab cakes and grilled mahi. Perfect portions, excellent quality and impeccable service. Our second time here in December and have been thrilled each time.

Place is over hyped. Difficult to exit late at night due to the over-crowding by the bar which is located by the only entrance door. No order or clear path to pass by. Food/Sushi was underwhelming enough for this to be a one visit type of place and not return in the future. Go to Steve and Cookie’s instead.

My first time here was great. I wasn't sure what to expect with the diverse menu but it all worked together really well. The music was definitely geared toward a trendier crowd and we liked that. It's much larger inside than I expected. Our table side service was perfectly timed and very friendly. Even on a holiday weekend they handled the flow of people with no issues that we could see. We will certainly be back.

Everything exceeded expectations: a thyme Negroni, a spread of carrot hummus with fresh and roasted vegetables and grilled pita, the Cuban pork chop with spice rub, pumpkin gnocchi, mango, and cinnamon brown butter, and the desserts, including excellent crème brûlée, rich banana spice cake with cream-cheese frosting, and a thick wedge of juicy blueberry pie. A companion observed that the panko-encrusted flounder was a tad "mealy," but he cleaned his plate nevertheless.

My husband and I celebrated our Anniversary at this restaurant and everything was amazing. Amber was our waitress and she was fantastic. She was attentive, helpful with the menu options, and overall very nice. We hope to have Amber again as our waitress in our future visits there! The food was fantastic. We had a little sushi along with our dinners and it was the best sushi we’ve had in a long time. Definitely a great experience again at Tomatoes.

So livid tonight!! It's a wonderful calm Tuesday evening. Tomatoes is packed because it's Margate, Ventnor, and Longport. Very limited locally where you can go, let alone take family out come or when vacationers want to stay within the area. My partner and I were in town for a bounce in town adventure. Unfortunately the only seats available at the time was the sushi bar. No conplaints(so far). The menu was what you expected from a town where quality and quantity are forgotten , but wealthy customers with deep pockets keep coming changing the real restaurant reputation and mindset. I'm middle class. But I've eaten food better than what most Americans are willing to explore. So we decided that the sushi was overpriced, the tuna appeared double frozen very light pink in color, the salmon had no fat, and the hamachi( wow it was such low quality). As a simple request when our server asked at 1st request what we wanted I kindly told him if he could put in the curry mussels as we were so undecided on the non-electric menu. Waiter said " you have to put your whole order at once" . Sure, fine, it's busy I get it. So I ordered one cocktail and one appetizer, your curry mussels. After 25 mins the cocktail comes, in watered down. ( I've been drinking tequila/mezcal for years). No hint if your beloved. 5 mins later here comes the mussels. I kid you not it was less than 1/2lbs of mussels. Go to your local grocery story and get a 1lb of mussel at the seafood section. They're usually bagged by the 1b. Cook it at home and it's enough for 2-4 ppl. These mussels from Tomatoes, at best 1/3 lbs. And now here is why I am posting my 1st review in years. More than half the mussels were cracked and broken. Tiny fragments of mussell shells were everywhere in the broth. BTW no toast or crostini to accommodate the sauce/juice/broth. We left with one of worst food experiences of our life. Walked over to the neighboring Sofias and ordered their Moussaka and trio app. Everything was priced appropriately and delicions. I will tell everyone I can to avoid Tomatoes. When you have money, wealth, power, you sometimes compromise what a real traditional meal is. Heck the best foods are from places that you least expect. Tomatoes is not where you want an experience. It is not where you want to take family and friends. Please please 🙏 give your pride and ego a pass and try something different. You will thank me later

Place was full, but you’d never know it, food came out at the perfect pace, which was fantastic. Great atmosphere! Katlyn was excellent, even though she had her hands full with other tables we never felt neglected she answered every stupid question we had. Katlyn made my sister-in-law’s Birthday special. From the apps, sushi, main entrees and dessert all was perfect. We will definitely request Katlyn next time we go.

This review really hurts because I usually have this as one of my favorite spots of all the shore spots. The bartender at the front bar gave us a heads up that the sushi bar was backed up. Totally understandable on a busy Thursday night, until we didn’t get our sushi at all. We winded up having to cancel our order after an hour of waiting. When trying to cancel the order, the bartender was less than helpful and even gave me a hard time about it. When I explained my frustrations, the bartender literally told me that “gets off at 12 and would meet me in the parking lot “. Not sure this is the type of guest interaction that Tomatoes looks for, but the unhelpful Kristen (not sure of spelling) was equally disrespectful when I explained the situation. Needless to say, this restaurant will continue to be busy, but not with my money!

My daughter and her sorority friends from out of town made a reservation two weeks in advance. The reservation was confirmed three times. They could not seat them until 10 PM. All of the girls arrived 15 minutes early very excited and were turned away at the door because they were not 21. Never once in any of the conversations with the hostesses was an ID mentioned for dinner.
I personally called twice to let them know that the reservation had been changed from 12 to 9 so that we did not inconvenience them. I told the hostess that the sorority girls were in from out of town and excited to eat at the restaurant. Nine young ladies fully dressed excited to have dinner and enjoy their evening turned away. What a disaster.
Had the hostess mentioned once that they wouldn’t be seated without an ID they would’ve made a reservation elsewhere.
Completely sabotaged their entire Saturday night. They are now eating dinner at Sophia’s.

Totally overhyped of a restaurant. Got there early for our 8:15 reservation and said table would be ready by 8:30. Texted me when it as ready and when I came 2 minutes later, huge attitude from hostess like I was bothering her.- it was 20 minutes past our time which is fine but don't rush me then! Service was ok- only ordered entrees and took about 50-60 minutes to get them. By 9PM, the music was super loud at the bar area so not really an atmosphere I want to pay that much for. The food was fine- nothing special.

We enjoyed dinner here. Great food and fantastic service. The place was a little crowded for our preference, but the food came out quickly and we have no complaints about overall experience. Delicious food. Definitely need to make a reservation for dinner.

It's been a couple years since I was here..We went on a Thursday night with reservations, still waited almost 20 minutes to be seated. Once seated our waited came over greeted us and said I just want to let you know that if you order sushi it's going to be awhile. I said "how Long"? He said at least an hour before they get your order..??? OK ...So I ordered pasta instead...The crab pasta..It was dry like it had been heating on a burner for hours...I'll pay anything for a good seafood pasta dish but this wasn't worth $30 ...the crab cakes same thing very dry and way over seasoned..I Had much better ones...I will say The apps were delicious ..I should have gotten three orders of the octopus..Highly recommend...

Don't get me wrong, the food at this place is really good. They have a huge menu and seem able to pull off sushi and traditional coastal cuisine really well.

My problem is, this place seems to be overhyped. It is virtually impossible to get a reservation here (we ate at 8PM on a Sunday). It just doesn't seem to be worth the effort. There could definitely be more upscale places to eat in this part of the Shore but I will not go out of my way to grab a reservation here again.

With that said, we did have a good meal. The menu is so diverse that it was a struggle to try everything that we wanted and we probably over-ordered. We started with the Parmesan Crusted Asparagus, which was probably my favorite thing we tried. It was kind of a unique spin on a staple and very tasty. It came with a great pesto aioli. We also got the Mozzarella en Croute, which was nothing special, but tasted good on some table bread.

Our second course was sushi. We got a Philadelphia roll and a "Karen" roll. Both were prepared at the sushi counter and really good. It was cool to have such good sushi at the Shore.

For the main course, we split the Cuban Pork Chop with a side of Truffle Mac n' Cheese. Both were also really good. The pork chop was seasoned really well and was bone-in. The Truffle Mac n Cheese was good but a whopping $11.50 for a small side portion.

All-in-all, this place has some good food and enough options that everyone will be happy. However, the high prices and insane difficulty I had getting a reservation means I will probably pass in the future. If you can grab a spot, it's probably worth a visit.

PRO TIP: There is a cool little seating area outside that has food trucks. I couldn't tell whether this was associated with the restaurant or not but it is definitely something to check out!

Had a great mean and a great time. We were seated in the back at a large table which meant we didn’t have too much noise to contend with even though the place was packed. The food was tasty albeit high priced. Our server was top notch and made sure we were well taken care of. Even though there are no strollers allowed, they accommodated our baby/seat without issue. Getting a table can be hard and they fill up quickly, but it’s for good reason. Their parking lot can’t accommodate anything larger than an SUV though. Pickups shouldn’t even bother.
