BEST SUSHI... EVER?!

I'm from the Bay Area (CA) and let me tell you - we have AMAZING sushi there, especially in fancy restaurants by the coast.

I would EASILY say Sumi Sushi is on par with, or maybe even BETTER than sushi places in the Bay Area.

The yellowtail hamachi is TO DIE FOR.

I had the Laub, Luke Skywalker (pictured), Double Down, and Tahoe Mountain (?) rolls alongside the tuna, salmon, and hamachi nigiri.

I also had quail egg shooters and the mussels.

Overall, 10/10.

Amazing job, Sumi!!!

Second time ordering and I’m really not impressed with how the pictures on the menu don’t actually reflect what you guys serve. “Lobster Dynamite” looks nothing like the menu photo. Not even the same sauce what so ever and no red fish eggs on top. Also the rooster salmon only comes with 2 pieces, 4 are pictured. When asked the servers said they don’t know what the website photos show but this is how it looks. The seaweed salads are a third of the way full and the cup is already small. Never again will I order this loose, sloppy mayonnaise covered, warm sushi.

Visited the area with friends and my husband. Stopped by the Sumi Sushi, and we are so glad we did. Amazing service, very attentive servers and the owner. All food (rolls, sashimi, poke bowl) were very fresh, generous portions, and outstandingly delicious. After we were done with our meals, even though we were very full, we’ve ordered fried green tea ice cream, which looked like a cake, and very delicious. We would be back to this gem.

Asking random locals, this is the sushi spot to go to in Carson!! If you can sit at the creation bar...do it!! It was our first time, so we had to ask for coaching. Big pieces of fish were amazing with a butter-like chew. The gyoza was the best I've ever had!!! I tried tempora ice cream for the first time. Oh boy!! Don't skip that part 😁 We will be back, for sure!

Visited the area with friends and my husband. Stopped by the Sumi Sushi, and we are so glad we did. Amazing service, very attentive servers and the owner. worst service i have ever experienced in a restaurant. A few of my friends and I came here 12/29/24 around 3. Immediately an awful start to the experience when our waitress came over and couldn't comprehend that we had a party of three, and just pointed us in a general direction and said
"i don't care choose one of those tables." It took us all of 15 minutes, with no service, waiting before we decided to take our business elsewhere. I've had another horrible experience at this same restaurant, but decided to give it another chance. Will never be coming back, highly recommend the spot next door.

atrocious customer service, food was too salty and there's dogs walking into the bar 🤮. We waited for 20 minutes for anybody and a pen then everyone is bothering you about what you ordered or what drinks were ordered.

We actually haven’t been here yet but we’ll be trying it tonight. Im giving it 4 stars solely based on the website experience. The site isn’t optimized for mobile and the menu gets really blurry when you try to zoom in, making it damn near impossible to read. When people are looking for a new place to eat, the 1st place they go is Google and then the website to look at the menu. If those 1st 2 experiences are not good, imagine how much business you are losing out on. We’re going to visit tonight anyway but you might consider using a platform like Popmenu for your website. I look forward to sharing my thoughts on the sushi! 🍣

I have eaten at most if not all the sushi restaurants in town over the last couple years and sumi in my opinion has by far the most delicious sushi in Carson City. Between the atmosphere, the food and just the all around feel of the restaurant. They remember who I am, make me feel welcomed and have never disappointed.

Rice had weird taste and watery texture. Sushi in general was not good. Service was the worst I’ve ever had. The waiter we had was not attentive. The waitresses that were there were unprofessional, no one seemed to know what task they were suppose to do. One waitress yelled across the room to one of the chefs and said “hey you didn’t tell me you had a girlfriend” to where the chef replied he did not and tried to stop the conversation but at that point all the employees and the restaurant as a whole looked bad. We will not be returning to eat here.

We tried the AYCE lunch while staying in Carson City. This was the best AYCA sushi that we have had. Virtually the entire menu was open to AYCE customers. I spent my lunch eating the custom nigiri creations, which were all excellent. My wife and I also both had the scallops, which were large and delicious. Then, desert is also included, and I had coconut ice cream that was homemade. This meal was a great value for $32, not including tax and tip. Two new waitresses were being trained that day, and they were great while learning the ropes of the sushi world. The food came fairly quickly despite the restaurant being fairly busy. We chatted with one of the owners and the general manager and both were friendly. The GM helped my wife with gluten-free options. The chef tailored just about whatever he could to be gluten-free. We recommend this restaurant highly.

My friends and I sat at the bar for all you can eat, quality fish, great service, and they don't skimp on the amount of fish in/on rolls. Sara and the two gentlemen behind the bar were cranking out rolls all night while keeping up with the three of us haha. We'll be eating there again for sure

Kaboom!! Joe and his staff absolutely blew us (and the competition) away! Our large group went with the all you can eat option. From the time we sat down, Joe opened the spicket and began serving the highest quality sushi. It was relentless! Each roll was better than the last. Sumi Sushi is the real deal.

I was here last Monday and the place was filled with people, tables, bar, and all. We had such a wonderful time, the food was fantastic, the service was great with the help of our waitress, Brooke. Listen...I had the same experience as the other negative reviews. It seems like everything that could go wrong with the food and service went wrong here. But because most people enjoy their meals here, I'm gonna cut it some slack and not tear it to pieces. I'm just sad that we blew a hundred bucks on a very disappointing meal.

This is evident in the quality and freshness of the menu items, the accuracy of the chefs and kitchen staff, and the friendliness and attentiveness of the wait staff. The best sushi with an exquisite atmosphere!!

My fiancé and I went here for the first time this past Saturday and it was absolutely extravagant. Not only did the astounding atmosphere blow us away but the service itself was exceptional. We had the pleasure of having Joe, the owner, as our server and we couldn’t have had a better experience. Joe went out of his way to make sure that we had the best first-time experience, cracking jokes and giving us all of the possible tips. From our conversations it is clear that Joe values and respects his employees as well as clients. Aside from the amazing atmosphere, this is the BEST sushi that you will get in town, if not the Northern Nevada area. The sushi is exquisite and you can modify rolls to your liking (no tempura flakes, make your own roll, etc.). I am amazed at the experience that we had and astounded by the tastefulness of this sushi. I will not be eating at another sushi restaurant ever again.

This place is fantastic! Best sushi I've had in and around Reno and beyond. So, so fresh, perfect, delectable combination of flavors, generous portions, and excellent service. We had a party of 7 on a packed Monday night and were treated like royalty by Katie and ?? (Sorry, I don't know his name) but they were both excellent and attentive. Shout out to the sushi chefs as well for handling the AYCE so well. It's got to be exhausting! I won't eat sushi anywhere else and I live clear out in Verdi. Thank you, thank you Sumi Sushi!

They were pretty busy when we left. But when we got there they were slow. We sat at the bar. All the appetizers were over cooked. Muscles and Scallops were rubber. All of the sushi was bland. Their cut of salmon was the exception, however their rice was horrible and I think was the biggest player in rating it so poorly. Rice was hard and had an odd flavor to it. There was 4 of us and we shared bites of everything. It was disappointing. I waited until the next day to post. I wanted to make sure we did become ill.

My wife and I went here for a night out (our first in months), and we were seated in the back. We had to ask for drinks because our server never came to our table. When she finally did we had already got drinks from the host and had our order taken. When we asked for our check she she said "one moment" and never returned. My wife and I sat there for 20+ minutes before I finally had to get up and find her.
Bartender and host were great. Server needs to find another employment option. Restaurants are fast paced environments and if you can keep up it's not for you.

This sushi bar is a special gem in Carson City! The best quality of fish in northern Nevada by far! The service is excellent as well! I’ve be been in now about 5 times and it’s always so busy, I mean completely full and the ladies serving handle it with grace! They are very attentive, and very outgoing, and always putting smiles on our faces! Now back to the food, bigger and thicker cuts on the fish and less rice!! The chefs will customize any rolls for you or just simply make you something special! I just let my chef Messi create rolls for me this last time and I was nothing short of amazed! My husband and I would eat here every day if we could! We absolutely love sumi sushi and the staff! If you’re looking for gourmet sushi and service that makes you feel right at home, look no further than downtown Carson City! Yay for Carson City for finally having a real sushi bar we can enjoy!

WOW! JUST WOW!!! Not only has this place become my favorite Sushi bar, but maybe my favorite place to eat period! I’ve gone several times now and from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave it’s an experience! They have some of the best ‘freshest’ sushi I’ve had period, and I eat a lot of sushi also it’s always busy which is a good thing but even better the servers never skip a beat from a warm welcome, drinks, appetizers, they are on it and always so nice!! I don’t even know how they do it !! The Chefs,if you can’t tell from this lengthy response are top notch as well, If you want a little convo they’ll be sure to entertain and they let you customize your rolls even on AYCE ! If I could I’d eat there every day lol! Guess that says it all and you guys have one heck of a Manager Sarah has become like a friend, so dedicated and hard working ! If you are in the area it’s a no brainer and if you are not it’s worth the trip! SUMI YOU GUYS ROCK !

We had a large party of 15. There is a 30% gratuity on parties 15 and over. No problem there. The issue is, they didn't tell you up front, and we were only given one server. Needless to say the service was not up to par for a 30% tip. Drinks were slow, orders were messed up, and condiments were requested several times before they showed up. We needed another server.
But all in all, the sushi was good, and the sashimi was excellent!! I do highly recommend it. Just make sure you ask for sufficient help for your party's size.

Update:
Man, I was hoping for better! Last time we came the service was awful. I was very disappointed because the food is really good. Today, we arrived with a group of 7 to give them another chance. We waited 25 minutes for a table top. No problem. I told the host that we were hoping for better service than the last time. The host was very friendly and assured us we'd be treated well. We sat down and although the place was not at capacity, we sat for another 15-20 minutes and no one attended us. After about a 45 minute time investment, we left. It's a shame, we won't be gong back.

Very very dissatisfied and disappointed.
This was my favorite place to come but I’ve had 2 incidents since then first time I came with all of my family more than 15 we had 4 separate receipts each of $200 plus of food and we all were charged 30% tips just for the fact that we all sat together. They took long to come and served us.
This last time they I waited 25 mins to get seated after I was seated I waited extra 15 mins and no one came around to even ask what I wanted to drink I just had to walked out, when I was walking out the served told me thank you?!? Top it off it was not even busy everyone had their food some were done just talking. I see all the waitress just standing in front talking to each other.
Sadly Never coming back again

AWESOME SUSHI PLACE! I live in reno and I had never heard of Sumi. a coworker and I decided to try it out and it was a great decision! The sushi was amazing, fresh and flavorful ! The presentation, the taste, the speed and the atmosphere was impeccable. I got to meet the owner Adam and he was very down to earth and approachable! Our servers name was deanne and she was amazing! You could tell that Adam treats his people well. She was open, friendly and funny af too lol. You could tell she enjoys what she does and that’s such a refreshing sight to see nowadays. Lastly joel made the rolls and dude was a beast! He Did a great job making everything and was efficient! I am genuinely pleased with this place and will be coming back with more people! If you’re in the Carson area and are craving sushi hit this place up frfr! They will not disappoint.

Food was okay, not bad but just okay. Went in on a Saturday and didn't wait to be seated. We had ordered everything at once and did all you can eat. We waited so long for the rolls. Only half came. We got the appetizers after we had finished the first set of rolls. Several servers came to check on us and ask what we were missing. We told them several rolls and they each said it would be around 15 minutes. We eventually ordered desert after the first two servers came by and it came first than the rest of the rolls. About 30 minutes went by and we asked the server and they said it was coming. We asked a few times for to go boxes and they also came before the rolls. By the time we got the last of our order, which was over an hour if not more, we had to take everything home because we had waited so long. This place is also very pricey compared to other restaurants in the area for what you get, especially service and food wise.

Great and friendly staff! Where other AYCE sushi places have made their rolls smaller and smaller, Sumi Sushi has done the opposite. Their rolls and nigiri are quality items, and the rolls are quite sizable. Make sure to come hungry! I very much enjoy coming here and will continue to patron this restaurant and recommend it to others. It's worth the trip from Reno every time!

Very slow to get our orders and they messed up in our all you can eat order. Some Sushi rolls were falling apart, not very good of a taste and Miso soup tasted like it was old, it smelled and tasted so bad. There was this girl that was good on checking up on us which was great, forget her name but super nice and friendly. I will not go back again.

I was on my lunch break and came here since they advertised good lunch specials. They sat me down and didn't bring me a menu. After a few minutes they're like what would you like to order. I had to ask for the menu. Then, the worst part, no one came back for another 25 minutes so I had to get up and ask some staff if I could put in my order which I had to take to-go. The staff just didn't notice me for like nearly half an hour. I figured it was cause they were waiiting other tables, but like why even seat me in the first place.

Lulu was a great server, sweet and fun. The lunch special with soup, cucumber or seaweed salad, and 2 rolls is a great deal @ $20.95. We are stuffed! I had and LOVED the Adam Roll and The Laub Special. Wow! So flavorful!! We highly recommend this great place.

The food was awesome. The rolls have there own uniqueness. The service is excellent. The staff is friendly. The owner was very interactive with the guest. Highly recommended this hidden gem. Will be back again.

I dont write this review lightly. Sumi Sushi has probly the best customer service of any restaurant Ive been to in a long time. This may be a little long so bare with me. I had reservations at another place for my girlfriends bday. Due to issue they got canceled last minute and I was scrambling to find another sushi place in town last minute. And when I say last minute I called them at 5pm on a Friday to get a table for 14 people at 630. With out hesitation they said no problem we'll make it happen. And they did. We waited about 15min past 630 for the table to get cleaned and such. Sarah our server was amazing. She never complained or even had a frown. The place was packed and she made us feel like VIPs. Joe the owner was making rounds with customers and stopped to chat with us and wish my GF a happy Bday. He even recommended a hidden roll not on the menu. Between the service, great food, and the atmosphere we do not plan on going anywhere else for our sushi fix for a very long time.

I've been to many sushi bars and this particular sushi bar, the employees treat everybody with compassion. Not only is the food top shelf, the service is excellent and I will continue to visit this establishment any time I'm in the mood for sushi. Date night, family party, it's worth every penny!

Amazing food, all rolls are fully customizable and delicious! Absolutely recommend the Luke Skywalker roll. Service is fantastic. Just an overall fun and inviting atmosphere.

Went on a Tuesday night, and the place was packed, and service seemed a little backed up. They were doing best they could to keep up, and they did get things to you that were really needed. Food always great.

Absolutely amazing service. The owner is so friendly and personable. The waitresses are quick and efficient. The menu was designed by Kornal himself! I have never had a bad experience here and I will be coming back over and over.

We came in tonight to celebrate my 50th birthday with my family. There was 10 of us. The service was outstanding and the sushi was amazing! Everyone took such good care of us and made my birthday very special. The owner was amazing and kept checking on us. I recommend this place very highly! It's become one of my favorite sushi places. If there were more than 5 stars I would give them all. Never been here before but I am glad I found this jewel in the Carson City. My sushi man, Charles was very kind and professional. Searching for the highest quality, most inventive sushi ends here if you live in the Reno/Carson/Tahoe area. Joe and Sherry have put together an extensive menu, drawing from the best sushi recipes, as well as creating their own. Using the top fish grade (1-5 scale - very important when choosing a sushi restaurant), they’ve established a destination in Carson (near the State Capital) that is well worth the drive from Reno or South Lake. Do yourself a favor and give Sumi Sushi a try.

A friend of mine showed me Sumi Sushi. It was really the best sushi I've ever had. Now every time I'm in the area, I take her there for lunch or dinner. Just an all around great choice for a date, to hang with friends or even stop in solo!

My husband and I received terrible service and a lot of attitude from the staff all because they assumed that we were other people. When I asked for clarification about a conversation I wasn’t a part of I received even more attitude from the staff. Our sushi chef also was smashing down our nigiri. This was our first time ever visiting and we won’t be coming back.

My husband and I had visited when it was the previous sushi place, and at that time, vowed to never return. Our boss insisted we try them again since Sumi had taken over. We agreed to try, and were so incredibly glad we did. The sushi was very good, the staff was great and our experience was pretty great too. We’ll definitely be back.

From California on a work trip and stopped by with some coworkers an hour before closing for dinner. Been to many sushi restaurants and this one beats them all. Best sushi I've had and the best service you can find. Will be back every time I'm in Carson.

When I received the rolls, I unfortunately did not get what I requested. I thought it was a language barrier with the sushi chef. I was polite and ate what was in front of me so I did not waste food. The rolls that I received had way to much cream cheese and very little fish. So much it was extremely over powering. When I attempt to eat my rolls, they just fell apart like they were not rolled tight enough. I unfortunately feel like I was wearing more than I was able to get to my mouth. My best fiend felt like she was eating a poke bowl. I would not and will not pay $40 per person for AYCE to eat here again. Sad to see Capital City Sushi is gone.

The guy making our sushi was pretty slow, but it was clear he was new. We don't generally make a fuss, but other servers noticed and picked up the slack. We only go a few times a year and there is an ever revolving staff, so we only recognised 1 person there. However, this was the first time when service was slow others stepped in. Y'all got a good team right now.

The food was excellent as always. Just so others have a heads up, a lot of the rolls are on the sweeter side, not as many savory options, but still a good selection (I love the sweeter rolls!)

Every sushi place I have been has had okay food but terrible service, to the point of me not wanting to go back. When we came in our server Deanne was so sweet, she put in the effort to make sure my kids and I liked the food, even went the extra mile to the make my kids feel comfortable enough to actually try the sushi! The food was great but I’ll be back because of the service.

Went here on a Friday night. They were turning people away because they didn't plan very well in staffing and scheduling. It was the sane night as prom at the high school. Very disappointing. And the host at the door was a little too dismissive about the entire situation.

Do yourself a favor if you love sushi, visit Sumi Sushi in Carson City. If you don't live in Carson, it is 100% worth the drive. The staff was fantastic and the food was too. The ingredients were fresh, the presentation was on point, and every roll was a delight.

I have to commend Joe for hiring such an amazing sushi chef!!! Leonardo hands down made our experience a 5/5!!! Very organized, quick and attentive. It’s good to see him here and I hope he sticks around for a long time. Oh and the playlist here is always on point. Now to the exquisite part. THE SUSHI!!!! Can you say fresh, fresh, fresh. The rolls have an amazing balance of spice, flavor and a little extra something that cannot be described so I recommend you come on over and give it a try. Definitely my favorite spot.

Much like the sushi spot next door this place is horrible at getting food ready by pick up time.. I have now waited 10 plus minutes past said pickup time multiple times in a row. Don't expect your food to be ready when you get there to pick it up!
