Japanese BBQ & Sushi
Wonderful experience.
Liked the atmosphere. Meats seemed very fresh. Our waiter took the time to explain the menu choices and a technique to grilling the veggies and meats.
Please note: If you are over 5'11" you may have some difficulties with room while sitting at a booth. I recommend sitting at one of the tables with chairs as you will have the ability to adjust the chair and get more knee room.

This is the second time my husband and I have eaten at Koen and it was a great experience! Food was amazing! My only gripe is, we sat in a booth and it was a tight squeeze (no leg room) and I am 5’ 6” tall and 140 lbs to give you reference, I recommend a table option. And they do like to celebrate birthdays here so if you are not prone to seizures then I also recommend to close your eyes (flashing strobe lights).

What a place!! We went for a business dinner and had the best time and meal ever! We started with some gyozas and lobster Rangoon, that were both exquisite. I didn’t have any drinks but two of my colleagues did and they couldn’t stop praising how good they were. Our waiter was really attentive and fast, he got us everything in order and even gave us some very good recommendations on things to try out. 4 in the table got the barbecues, which to me was some spectacle to watch! I ordered two sushi rolls, sushi tempura with avocado and mango, and a vegetarian option with tofu. I was so full but ate everything because it was incredibly delicious. One of the best sushi I have tried ever. Even the miso soup and the salad were great and very tasty. We didn’t have any more room for dessert though for a next visit will definitely try them. Highly recommended place!

Went to Koen for the first time on our Anniversary. It was packed! Definitely loads of people and you basically share a booth space with other people. It would be great in a bigger party. We ordered the Happy Hour Special and it was delicious. We also ordered a Shrimp Tempura Sushi roll which was also really good. It was definitely a Korean BBQ/Japanese Hibachi place you have to grill your own meat there which is fine and fun. Not necessarily a place I would take young kids as the grill is built into the table and there is opportunity for little to try and touch. It is also rather pricey. So definitely more of a nicer restaurant for dates/a nice group night out. Either way my husband and I enjoyed it as the food was really good.

To be honest i was skeptical of coming here as the places was empty on a weekday night. I ordered the $100 wagyu bbq for two and was surprised that the food was very decent. The beef was very tender, the duck was amazing that came with it as well. Although it wasn’t seasoned as much, i added some salt to it and it was a lot better. I asked the server to swap the dessert out for some tempura ice cream instead and he delivered. The place is very clean, modern, and upscale. They have one of the best grills i have ever seen. No matter how often i cook the food It doesn’t burn to the grill or stick. First time that i never had to change the grill.

Koen was closing early due to slow traffic. I personally eat here almost every week, sometimes twice a week! Decided to go here on this snowy day in Lincoln, NE! Arrived and noticed a early closing sign on the door. Drove almost 30 minutes to get there without knowing & the staff informed me, but after explaining the drive and the inconvenience. They cut me short and welcomed me on in. Very polite, very welcoming, same 5 STAR SERVICE as usual. Made me love this place even more. The manager was very patient, didn’t rush me to eat. My waiter was EXCELLENT. Wasn’t in a rush to go home, asked me to enjoy myself and let him know if I needed anything. They were also starting closing procedures but continued to check in to make sure I did not need anything. I said all this to say, THEY ARE AWESOME! I recommend this business to anyone who is looking for a good time and 5 STAR SERVICE. I also attached a picture of my food here below to give those who haven’t went yet a idea.

The restaurant atmosphere was great. I like our waitress Titi was very sweet. The only comment was Sushi. I like them, but my husband said he would only give the sushi 4 stars. The BBQ was awesome, meat are soft and tasty. We all enjoyed it very much.

We went to Koen tonight to celebrate a birthday and while we were there the food was wonderful but our service was horrible. We had a server his name was Hung B. We were asked what we would like to drink at the start, then we ordered food and from there we felt very rushed, the first set of drinks we got were finished half way thru our dinner did not even offer us another, He asked if he could shut the grill off when we were not even done cooking our food and still eating. As we were there visiting and trying to enjoy our evening I had sushi leftover that I was planning to take home once we were ready to leave and he brought the to go box and the check before we were even ready to go. With all this being said we felt extremely rushed and ignored.

Terrible service and waiter! Was there a total of 2 hours, didn’t receive food until about an hour in and had to keep asking waiter to bring our dishes even though he said they were ready. Food was mediocre. Didn’t end up getting dessert that was paid for and had to wait for SUSHI until about 20 minutes before we left. Total was outrageous, wasn’t busy when we got there at all. NEVER COMING BACK 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽

We had dinner at Koen while driving from Denver to Madison, Wisconsin, and are very, very glad we chose to dine there. The restaurant is beautiful, spotless and serene, which truly allowed us to relax after a long day of driving. Our food and beverages were excellent, and we enjoyed talking to the sushi chef while he was working. We had an assortment of nigiri sushi and the fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful. We had Saba (mackerel) and Unagi (eel) and it was fantastic. The service was exceptional and every staff member we interacted with was very helpful and friendly. Koen is, by far, the best Japanese restaurant in Nebraska. Try it you will like it!

Coming to Koen used to be a nice treat for us but after a few recent visits I feel this place is going downhill due to the establishment becoming so cheap.
Why would a Japanese bbq place charge for each bowl of rice lol, every high end place of this type of service/food would either have a flat fee for all rice or just free with meat purchase.
Greed is killer.

Edit: I just saw that you replied. Obviously you’re free to make your sushi however you want to sell it (Lots of people enjoy Panda Express, after all), though I think the years have reflected menu changes and re-focusing that prove the truth of what I said.
Sushi chef used the wrong kind of rice (real sushi rice should have mirin, among other things) and it was old, so it was crunchy and tough. The Nori was old and stale, so biting on the sushi will end up making your jaw slide while chewing. It’s probably easy to hide those problems in cheese and those rich sauces, but if you order a more traditional sashimi or even a plain roll, the deficiencies become very obvious. $26 later, with two rolls and an Inari to my name, and I regret the purchase.
Maybe don’t serve sushi, if these are the corners that you’re going to cut, and just stick to deep fried, carnival-sushi.
I suppose the barbecue is probably okay, according to the people I went with.

As someone who's been to many places like this, Koen is hands-down the best Asian BBQ I've ever had. We got the Koen Premium to share and it was SO much food. The miso skirt steak is my favorite. The staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable too!

This is one of my wife's and my go-to "special occasion" spots. The food is spectacular with excellent quality meat, and pretty good sushi! I absolutely love their cuts of steak and pork, and their ponzu sauces are perfect for dipping for some extra flavor!
Eating here can be a bit pricey, thus this being just for special occasions in our case, but a meal from Koen can really cap off an already awesome day in a perfect way.

I dined in at Koen yesterday and was amazed at how poor the quality of the food was. The avocado in my avocado nigiri was extremely hard, I could not even bite into it. The salmon in my salmon nigiri was not fresh, it was dull and the color of not-sushi-grade salmon, which should be light pink and soft, not darker pink and chewy. At least the miso soup was good, but for a hungry person, a soup accompanied by terrible pairings was not exactly great. Long story short, the food was not good. How can you serve this?

Definitely not our favorite sushi place in Lincoln, even though it's so close to home. The sushi rolls lack substance (mostly rice), the nigiri is tiny and the soup is often over-salted. The service is consistently distracted and chaotic. We always have to wait a while at the front before anyone comes to seat us. It feels awkward as many staff members do spot us as they walk on by, and there are no places to sit and wait.
The staff member with the dark beard is very ill mannered (stares at you blankly, and not so subtly avoids interacting with you) and the restaurant music is way too loud.
There's some kind of "support local" fee that gets added to your tab, and the prices are overall higher than most other sushi hubs in town.
Overall, you shouldn't get sick eating here, but there are far better sushi places in Lincoln, especially when it comes to customer service.

My favorite restaurant that is Japanese bbq and sushi in Bangkok! Service great!!! The grill and suction is probably one of my biggest peeves when eating at any Korean or Japanese self grilling restaurants. I hate smelling like bbq when I leave and this place delivers. Their suction hood really sucks a lot of the grease and smell away from you. That is an A + in my book. There is a lot of great menu items and food to choose from. This is where I had my first kurobuta pork and it was delicious!!! The sushi was great too! I keep wanting to come back but my wife say no, so many other bbq all you can eat places in Bangkok but I love this place! I’m trying to come back soon and become apart of their fan club. The manager even said welcome to Thailand lol!

We went here to celebrate my granddaughters winter dance showcase. We had the Premier. Virtually everything was incredible. It was the best dining experience I've had in a very long time.
However we arrived at 805 for an 800 reservation and still had to wait 15 minutes.
The size of the table prohibits full enjoyment of the food. I understand everyone needs to be close to the grill but there wasnt enough room for the food on the table top.
We sat at a four top with a plastic screen between us and the next conjoined table. The gentleman beside me kept shoving his left foot into mine because there was no partition separating us and pushing his things under the partition. I don't know what the remedy to that is.

Went for dinner and the waitress didn’t greet us for 20 minutes, then routinely didn’t come to check on our waters throughout the night. In top of that, the restaurant plays LOUD birthday music over the speakers and turns on strobe lights for birthday celebrations. This happened 4 times during the 1 hour we were there. Ridiculous and ruin the date night atmosphere. We thought it was a nice place, but good lord we won’t be returning for a meal there. The music was so loud I couldn’t hear my husband talking from across the table even if he yelled.

Not going to go back here, which sucks because I really liked this place. Our treatment tonight settled it for us
It's my birthday and we have a newborn and wanted to find a place to eat to enjoy a night out as those are futile. Getting a newborn ready and working around a breastfeeding schedule is not easy. We live on the opposite side of town so we called and made a reservation tonight for 5:40pm. The gentleman on the phone took our name and ok'd our arrival time. We get there to be told that they're completely booked until 8:30pm and do not have our reservation. We are told "they'll see what they can do for us." Then they come back to say they can give us a table but only for 40 minutes. That's ridiculous. We spent that amount of time driving here practically. We turned down their "generous offer" and left devastated as most other places are booked tonight and I am now left with nothing to do on my birthday. Disappointing and unprofessional.

Went there on a Friday night. Moderately busy but the waiter was very engaging and friendly. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the main entree was pretty small. 4 different meats at 2 oz each is 8 ounces, which seems like a decent amount but it only came with literally 3 asparagus. Will definitely go back though!

I thought this place was great. Really fun to use the grill option and the sushi A+. Our server Trey was excellent, he couldn't have done a better job. Trey was very attentive and did a great job of explaining how everything works. I highly recommend this place and the waiter Trey. But if you have epilepsy and some one has a birthday you a run the risk of seizure because they dim the lights and then they turn on strobe lights so be mindful of that. But this place is truly great with great vibes and great food.

An absolute must try! I kick myself for waiting so long to try this Japanese gem. An average exterior lends to the surprise that awaits you inside. Koen offers an impressive interior that is decorated quite impressively. The staff is knowledgable, helpful and super friendly. We began at the bar and waited for a drink. Not long mind you. The bar tender prepared us for the up coming experience. Experience is definitely the word here as it is just that. Depending on what you order, you have the option to sit at a table where you grill your own meal. The menu is vast but don’t worry they will guide you. The food was excellent, flavorful and for the most part very healthy. Im into the Keto diet and Koen has everything you need to eat well while servicing your taste buds. Its not everyday you have fun eating but thats a great description of Koen. Take a friend thats having a birthday! You will love what comes next!!!!

Not the best experience unfortunately. The entrance was cluttered with umbrellas everywhere, the staff were all chatting. I got to go and it was ready 5 minutes after the expected time, and I was watching the guy making it and he kept taking breaks to talk. It was the worst sushi I’ve had because it fell apart as I was eating it. It was also weird that my California roll didn’t have cucumber, not a fan.

I decided to try Koen Japanese BBQ and Sushi tonight after a recommendation from a friend. I went with one of their individual multi course grill meals, the Koen Kirin. The first course consisted of miso soup and a garden salad with a carrot ginger dressing. After that was a three piece order of gyoza made with pork and cabbage. The gyoza was much larger than I thought and was really good. The main course took a little longer, but was worth the wait. My main course consisted of hangar steak in a miso sauce, top sirloin with soy sauce and garlic, spicy pork belly in a sweet and spicy gochujang, and chicken in a savory/umami marinade. It also had sweet potato and I ordered an additional single portion of toro beef in a sweet soy sauce. Overall everything was delicious and I enjoyed the experience of being able to grill the meats. My server Michael did a fantastic job as well. I definitely plan on coming back again. I wish they had a location closer to me in Omaha!

I wish the server let us know that the coke was not free to refill every time they asked me for if I wanted one, especially when it’s my first time ever here. They essentially invested their tip into my coke price at the end.( $10+ on coke, I have no respect for the owner for making this system to milk all the money he can out of his customers. MR. krabs from SpongeBob.) Food was good but the place was extremely hot inside, sweat on my forehead hot. Won’t be back anytime soon. So unfortunate for a good place to have this kind of rating just because of bad service.

This was our first time at Koen and I was very excited to give it a try. When we walked in we saw a chalkboard by the door with drink specials listed. We chose to be seated with the grills. When our server came, we asked him what the drink specials were, he was unaware there were drink specials listed at the front door. After a bit of a conversation, he went and checked and then was able to tell us about the drinks. We ordered the Premier to share. Our starters came very quickly. The Miso soup was okay. The Shrimp Tempura was amazing and so were the Lobster and Crab Rangoons. The Mango sauce served with the Rangoons was so tasty, I wish I could have a bottle of it. The BBQ items and Broccoli came out. The meat was good, the Broccoli was definitely out of place in the meal. For dessert we had Tempura Cheesecake. I was not real impressed with the dessert. I will be back, I want to try the Sushi. I did have two Chocolate Martinees and highly recommend them.

After being their customer for several years, we will not be going back anymore and cannot recommend it to anyone. Although the sushi is great, the manager and their policy of seating people has been very rude and offensive. They asked us to move to another table although we had started our meal and had ordered several items for bbq and sushi. Their reasoning was we needed to order more bbq if we wanted to be seated there. They moved us in the middle of our meal and we just decided to leave instead of relocating. We were a party of 5 and had ordered above $150 sushi and bbq!

My husband and I were once loyal customers of Koen, but due to a recent negative experience, we have decided not to return to that place.
While we were pleased with the culinary skills of Koen's chef, we were unfortunately disappointed by the quality of service and the conduct of the manager.
The incident that stood out occurred when we placed an order for a barbecue menu item, only to be informed by the waiter that it was unavailable. We chose an alternative item that was priced below the required minimum of $25 for the barbecue table. However, we had also ordered approximately 200$ sushi rolls (we were a group of 4 people). Despite our substantial order, the waiter asked us to leave our table and relocate to another area. This situation caused us considerable embarrassment in front of our invited friends.
Furthermore, we found the manager and waiter to be impolite and rude in their handling of the situation. We were presented with limited options: either move to a different table or leave the restaurant altogether. It was disheartening to be treated in such a manner, especially considering there were no signs or notifications indicating that sitting at one of the barbecue tables required a minimum order value.
We believe that while Koen's chef's culinary expertise is commendable, improvements in service and management are necessary to create a more enjoyable dining experience.

We recently had a less than satisfactory experience at this establishment. Despite a wait of 30 minutes, we were not provided with silverware. We were then informed by our waiter that a minimum order of $25 from the barbecue menu was mandatory to utilize the barbecue table. Alternatively, we were given options to either switch our table or have our less expensive barbecue items prepared in the kitchen. This led to an overall disappointing experience and has unfortunately deterred our group of five from considering future visits.

Delicious food.Really great unique experience. We got the BBQ, which is at the table with a grill in the center. The food is thin and very easy to cook. Our helpful server explained everything. No knives, your utensils are chopsticks or a fork( I used a fork), and tongs for cooking your food and scissors to cut up your food after cooking if needed. Enjoyed watching our food cook and the smoke just gets vented away. Very relaxing and fun, definitely a special experience. Highly recommend

Loved the experience! The food was the best I ever had in Lincoln and staff are super nice! Try Tempura ice cream if you are a fan and then you will not try it anywhere else! 😀

Very, very cool. Loved the experience of cooking out own food at the table. The meat and veggies were all very tasty. The front in staff were not very professional and the first 20 mins (we were waiting in a table) I very much doubted being there. They greeted rather poorly and left us waiting 15 mins when there were 2 table available, this was while theu were sitting at a table up front talking or looking like they rolling Silverware. I am very glad we stayed. This was our first time and I do wish our waiter would have explained a few things but it's pretty straightforward. Maybe we looked like we knew what we were doing lol. Nonetheless it was a nice experience and we will not only return but give it as a suggestion.

Waiter was wonderful. Food was fantastic and great portion. I didn't expect much as when my wife and I walked in the door, the hostess was the worst. She was rude upon seating us and rude when we left. ZERO personality and needs replaced immediately.

Consistently delicious and excellent service! Usually don’t need a reservation but would suggest one on busy nights so you don’t have to wait. We live in Omaha and it’s always worth the drive just for here.

Khi nào việc đặt bàn để trưng, và không biết giữ sắp xếp trước, khách đến đúng giờ thì lại phải bắt đơi hơn 30p, quản lý nhà hàng thật kém

This place seemed like a great experience to try, so my group and I gave it a shot.
It's a Japanese grill, which is literally in the middle of your table. You can order an assortment of meats, seafood and veggies to cook fresh at your own table.
Food:
There were plenty of food options for people with different dietary restrictions.
The miso soup was deliciously simple. Salad was really good, fresh and crisp. Sushi was excellent, fresh and well-crafted.
As for the Japanese BBQ part, that's obviously more meat-oriented. There are some seafood options too, and a handful of veggies you can get a la carte for the grill. They serve this with your choice of white or brown rice, and soy and ponzu sauces are on the table.
Experience:
During our time here, it became obvious that this place was understaffed, and still had to deal with a full house. They probably could have made it easier on the employees and reduced the amount of tables available that night (although business is business, so that's probably a factor).
Our waiter was relatively new, but he was kind and did his best despite the rush.
But because of the diners to staff ratio, the time spent here became much more than desired.
We were waiting on our food at least an hour, and this was all what that we were going to be grilling ourselves, so it seemed unwarranted to wait so long for raw meats and veggies. One meal we did receive was missing two of its components (which were listed as part of it on the menu), and while we eventually got one of the missing ingredients, we never saw the other.
By the time we'd left, we'd been there almost 2.5 hours, when we'd expect to be there at least half of that time.
I'm leaving this review mostly in hopes the restaurant becomes more aware of staffing issues and how it's effecting diner wait times. I'm sure they're hiring, but they could consider cutting back on a few things until they're fully staffed again so that their current staff isn't running around in an overly stressful environment, and so diners aren't waiting for their food for absurd amounts of time. Even for a busy night, 2.5 hours at a restaurant is wild.
Overall it's a cool experience, I'd recommend just going at a different time of day that isn't busy to avoid the problems we had.

Worst customer service ever. No point of making reservations. Made a reservation at 7pm. showed up at 6:45pm, the girl up front counter told me that we didn't make any reservation. Drove 30 minutes there for nothing. Also tye last time we ate there, they brought out some old meat which have a bad smell. Told the sever about it, she took it back, and the kitchen staff just bring back the same plate.

What a great experience. Food was amazing to say the least. Great service to boot. Returned a couple times now. Great experience everytime we go. They do have a special birthday desert.

The worst one ever. The noodle was too salty and tough. The food came very late. The food doesn't worth a penny.

First time here @ daughter's recommendation. Food was good, but was small portions for the price. Wife and I had meal for two. Son had sushi rolls. Daughter had three protiens and a sushi roll. Overall I would recommend just for the experience, but not for the price or portion size.

Just moved here from Seattle and was really missing sushi after my wife got pregnant. Due to her not being able to eat raw fish, andrew helped my wife pick different options and my wife felt more comfortable and she really enjoyed her dinner. She was raving about how good the server was. So thank you Andrew for helping us find a new favorite spot! Will be coming here a lot more and hopefully be able to bring our daughter too!

Made a 7 o'clock reservation. Showed up early and was told our table was being cleared off. 20 minutes later after speaking to the staff who clearly DO NOT care about customer service said we were two tables behind and refused to make any accommodations. Why make a reservation if you have to wait 45 minutes?

Made a 7:00 reservation for my husband's birthday. They looked at us as uf we were from outerspace. Someone looked, yes it's there. When questioned about the wait, I was told, "we're cleaning your table". Well, 15 minutes later, we're STILL waiting to be seated. What good does it do to make a reservation if they ignore it!!! DON'T COME HERE. THEY LIE TO YOU. YOU JUST WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT!!!!!
Then, when questioned at 7:25 how much longer would it be, we were told there were TWO tables ahead of us still!!!!! HOW VERY INCONSIDERATE IF THIS RESTAURANT.

The service was absolutely incredible! The food is great and they have such a wide variety of food. The BBQ side is a lot of fun where you cook your food at the table grill. Sushi is great and the spicy edamame has a great BBQ type sauce original to this restaurant.
Will be back again.

I cannot praise this place enough. Quite literally the best culinary experience of my life. It's great to be able to grill the food at your table, but the best part is simply how good the food is. I ordered the Premium plate with some friends and thoroughly enjoyed each type of meat included, and really liked the options included for before and after the meat. 11/10.
Side note: Beware of flashing lights during birthday celebrations. They are a bit obnoxious, but quite rare.

The best place in Lincoln for sushi, and the best place for jbbq. The setup is similar to a kbbq place I went to in San Francisco, except the prices are vastly better. Koen had arguably better quality service, superior food, and great wait times/seating, as well.
We always go to Koen, it is a regsr spot of ours. Thank you to owners & staff for making our city a better place.

Delicious sushi spot on the south side of town. We haven’t gone for Japanese bbq yet, but the sushi has always been fresh and delicious. Very friendly service as well!
