Sushi Experience №1

Utterly disappointing.

We ordered Dan Dan noodles, crazy karaage, pork dumplings and a karaage kids roll for take out. This was just about the worst meal I have eaten in Bozeman. The fried chicken and pork dumplings were so over-fried they were cardboard. The Dan Dan noodles were a rehydrated, vacuum sealed dollar box of noodles from the gas station. We paid $70 for a totally garbage dinner.

This is the third time we have gone to hachi. Our previous experiences were sub-par, but it was early in their opening, so we gave them the benefit of the doubt. I will not be eating here again.

Really really bad service and food. They also procure your email from god knows where and spam it with random ads. Thanks for the spam

Very small portions- insultingly small even.

I dined in months back and did not experience the small portions I did today ordering takeout. I spent about $60 (Godzilla, King Kong, and chef special rolls) and could have ordered almost twice as much at another sushi place in town.

I will never return to Hachi due to this experience.

The rolls themselves weren't bad, just lacking in quantity or size. If the total was less I wouldn't be as upset.

Update:

A manager reached out to me wanting to make things right because of this review. I replied to their message and I've heard no response. It's been weeks. It's a shame management talks the talk but doesn't walk it.

Great atmosphere! I wish they had some more arcade games.. I found the selection to be a little less than expected but still a great time!! Service is always great! The hatchi tots are a must for anyone who is dining here! Sushi rolls are great quality. I'm a little salty they took my favorite roll off their happy hour.. but I will continue to eat here! Try the Madison roll and the King Kong roll!

I’ve eaten here a few times and have really liked it. Yesterday we went there and ordered three rolls one of which was the $16 King Kong roll. When it came to the table the roll had been sliced into pieces and laid on their sides and spread across the plate eight pieces in total. The problem was they were the diameter of a nickel or for reference my wedding ring and maybe half an inch thick. The amount of protein in the center was the thickness of a straw and the rice on the outside was minuscule. I asked our server if that was the normal size and he said no and went to talk to the manager. The manager came back and said that was the normal size of that roll and asked if we wanted a different one. We chose to order a different one as the size of the King Kong wouldn’t fill up a toddler so the manager took it away. All the other rolls were the size of a dollar coin and were delicious. We ordered a fried chicken appetizer and when our server brought it to the table he tipped it too far over and a large chunk of chicken fell off onto the floor. He just said sorry and didn’t replace the fallen chicken nor did he discount the appetizer. Unfortunately I left there hungry

I've been going to Hachi since they opened about once a month either in person or via delivery. I've even been to the trivia nights. I've noticed them cutting corners slowly but tonight was the last straw. Hachi has never been a top sushi restaurant but it was ok food and convenient.. Tonight I ordered via Doordash and what arrived looked like some sort of joke. The portions looked like miniatures. I eat small meals and I don't write reviews based on the amount of food but this was insulting. Tiny slivers of protein inside of tiny tiny rolls. The teriyaki chicken was a small handful of dry bits of chicken that looked like scraps you'd feed a cat. Nothing here has ever been great. I can go to Hooked or Seven and get twice the quality for the same price. Is this place going to go bankrupt? What is going on? This is ridiculous. Absolutely never going back or ordering again.

Be sure to check the bag. We noticed after we sat down with our takeout that they forgot to put any sauces in the bag. Dry sushi and dry dumplings weren’t the same.

We liked everything we ordered, but hated that we didn’t check the bag.

PSA: Fried rice was a healthier version than most and included larger carrots and veggies.

Overpriced for the quality and very lackluster flavor.

Wife order a sushi roll and only half came with tuna on top the other half had avocado. Calamari was VERY BLAND, I stopped eating it after a few bites, zero flavor.

I ordered the fried rice with chicken. It was okay but for $20 you would the portion would be greater.

Overall I don't recommend this establishment.

I this point I can't give a full review because I'm pregnant and am trying to avoid fish, but I've been craving sushi and indulging in veggie rolls. I have to say I'm impressed so far, especially seeing all the mixed reviews! The rice on my rolls was perfect, the portions were great, I didn't think the rolls were unusually short or small. It did take a long time for our order to get here, but that's the worst I can say, and they might just have one delivery guy to handle everything. My friend said the Fire Roll was awesome.

Waited almost an hour to get 2 rolls of sushi. An HOUR. Waitress said they had a lot of to-go orders when I went down to cancel our order. Rolls magically appeared right then. They were tiny, maybe the width of a quarter and 6-7 inches long. Waitress did comp our rolls, which was nice, but we won't be back.

Check hachi off the list of places you need to try. Got there at 530. Took 15 minutes for a server to come to us. Happy hour went to 6. So we ordered a few rolls off the happy hour. I ordered a spicy margarita. We got the shrimp tempura out fast. Still no drinks. 30 minutes. 30. Minutes. We still didn't have our drinks. Waitress asked if we were okay I said yeah but can we get the drinks. She grabbed a beer out of the cooler. That was maybe 10 feet from us. Said mine will be right out. 15 Minutes later. I finally flagged her down and said can I just get a beer and cancel the margarita. 45. Minutes. For a drink. We got our food. Before I got a beer. That was 10 feet away from me. We ordered 3 rolls which were decent. Not great but okqy. We ordered one more roll. Took 45 more minutes for one roll. I sat with an empty water glass for 2 hours.

The server was nice enough to give us both a free roll coupon and comp my beer.

I did enjoy this place until I had to wait 30 minutes to a get a beer and watched the server deliver multiple mixed drinks to folks who were sat long after me, then I was delivered a small can and told all the glassware was dirty. So I decided this place wasn't for me anymore. A lot of better tasting food else where for cheaper in Bozeman.

Probably the WORST sushi I’ve ever had. Hands down. We got 5 rolls to share, and they were the tiniest rolls I’ve ever seen, with nothing in them.. multiple rolls ($16-$18) that had 1 item on the inside, rice that was terrible, nori that was hard to bite through, and fully drenched in mayo and sauce. I’m a sauce guy, and this beyond enjoyable.
Service was also terrible, waiter only came to drop off food briefly and was never around when we needed anything. I could not believe how terrible the food and service was, and this place is still open. What a waste of money.
Only good things to say was a decent atmosphere, and some arcade games upstairs. I will not be coming to back to Hachi again.

We've eaten here a few times since it opened and unfortunately this time it seemed it had gone pretty downhill. Cold and bland chicken teriyaki that was $26 (they kindly removed it from the bill after we expressed our displeasure) and a server that was missing so many basic aspects of serving. Owners and upper management need to take a hard look at their operation and put some serious time and effort into their current chefs and servers.

Visited again for the fourth or fifth time after about a year. It seems things have gone downhill, unfortunately. Servers and chefs seemed to actively be avoiding eye contact when we sat at the raw bar for 15 minutes waiting to put in a drink order (we had a few questions about the hand rolls, an old favorite for us). Eventually we got two beers that were about 3/4 filled. We initially planned to get hand rolls and a few other dishes but decided to head elsewhere after it felt like we were burdening the servers in a near empty restaurant. It seemed like the the problems stemmed from major recent staff turnover or lack of training. The server who helped us was training someone and they both seemed lost. We’ll be going to Seven or Hooked in the future.

Food was OK, way to much soy sauce though and portions are basically kid sized, basically 1 pack of ramen with 2 ounces of steak was 28$. Way too expensive for what it is. excluding the price the venue was super loud because they leave there doors open in a shared building, people are screaming in the hallways. I Would strongly advise going here unless your ok with paying $100 for 2 half sized meals and a appitizer, 1 cup of tea was $6.50 for some hot water and a 2 cent tea bag. Go to daves if you want sushi, avoid at all costs.

We tried Hachi after reading the reviews. In short, we were very disappointed. First, the sushi rice was overcooked, gummy, and appeared as last season’s low-quality broken rice. In addition, it wasn’t flavored. “Sushi” means vinagerd rice. There was not a hint of typical sushi rice seasoning. I saw no Hangiri, the breathable tub that holds sushi rice. I noticed they were pulling rice from the cooker. I also ordered a side of rice, which was poorly presented and was cold. The nigiri was a very small portion, and there was no wasabi beneath the maguro. Japanese fare is often very straightforward, but it always includes quality ingredients and is always presented beautifully. Hachi has some work to do…

Dining with our kids. We didn’t know the upstairs has a game room/dining option and we were sat below. When leaving the kids saw the game area and we’re disappointed. We felt staff didn’t represent the restaurant well. Our 7 year old wanted miso soup only and I ordered it from the main menu. After a long wait, we received maybe 1 cup of soup and were told no seaweed or tofu comes in the kids option. We didn’t order a kids- I asked the staff if we could get the correct miso with the seaweed and instead she brought three small sauce trays with the sides to split between two kids. Both kids left hungry :( I did tell her our seven year old loves seaweed and tofu but I guess she thought kids can live off basically nothing for dinner. Our meals were basic- nothing to write home about. Service was slow, it wasn’t busy.. we won’t be back.

We were pretty excited to try this out and the host was super nice in getting us seated quickly. She gave us the menus and explained it was still happy hour. We ordered some items from the happy hour menu and we ordered some rolls from the normal menu. The server was nice and the food was delivered promptly after ordering. The calamari was not what we expected and a little disappointing as the breading was almost a chicken fried style breading instead of a lighter tempura consistency. The rolls were decent and well assembled but the flavor was lacking with some of them. The most disappointing flavor on the rolls was the dollops of what I assume was aioli which were pretty flavorless. At the end we were charged full price for the happy hour menu items. The server claimed that those items weren't on the happy hour at first, but then admitted they were and told me I was just too late getting my order in. I told the person that the hostess had stated it was happy hour and even gave us the menu. We even ordered promptly after the server came to take our order. The server said she would see about knocking some off of the bill but I was really just over the experience and I was disappointed. I've paid over $100 for sushi meals before and it wasn't worth the fight. I was excited to try this place and I felt like I struck out.

This place needs to be better about updating their Google profile with correct hours. Just tried stopping in and the place is closed even though they say they are open online. I tried calling to leave a message and the voice-mail mentioned being closed today but then doesn't even let you leave a message it just says goodbye. Updating the voice-mail is a step in the right direction but it's not that hard to update Google and it's far more useful. There were a lot of other people trying to go in as well and leaving dissapointed. The last time we were here we felt it doesn't quite compare to places like daves or 7. Certainly more expensive for less quality. I will say the happy hour menu was more worth it which is what we were shooting for today.

This was a surprise because 2/3 of the restaurant is vacant. A couple walked in behind us and they seated them immediately. The were dressed up and looked much nicer than us. We then got seated after them and had to listen to their conversation.

I should have taken pictures of my food for reference.
-Spicy hand roll was good
-miso was good
-sushi sampler was bad
-hibachi sirloin was bad

Growing up in Hawaii may have created an unfair preference for fish quality and sushi. But, this was NOT good. The sampler also came with a tuna roll. It was the most pathetic excuse for a roll I have ever had. It was 6 pices so small and flavorless I questioned why it was included. For 26 bucks I'm very disappointed.

My partner got the steak and I noticed they were having trouble eating it. They gave me a piece and it was cooked to a rubber consistency. I couldn't chew through it. I felt bad.

I'm sad to write this because I live close and was hoping for a good new sushi spot. I don't recommend it. Our server was great though.

Disappointed is an understatement. Ordered the habachi sirloin ($30 for a "6 oz")--it was unflavored, cold, and so tough I could barely chew it. I had to ask for a knife from the kitchen and even then could barely saw through it. How do you destroy a steak so badly? Haha. It tasted like what I imagine a cold leather sandle would taste like if you tried to eat that. There's no other way to explain it, really.

My sushi roll was about the size of a nickel around. It was falling apart, and had barely any filling. Rice was not sticky and it was laughable at how small it was. Not a single piece of the roll didn't have the seaweed ripped and rice falling out of it.

My husband's sushi sampler ($26) also came with a laughably tiny COMPLETELY plain, bland, boring ahi roll (wouldn't even make it a spicy roll when he asked). And 6 small pieces of nagiri. His disappointment was so obvious when it was brought out I had to stifle a laugh.

The whole experience was amusably bad. I do not recommend wasting your money here. It is absolutely 100% not worth the money or your time.

Life is short, don't waste it eating yucky (overpriced) food! I wish I'd read the reviews before I went.

Great spot for a casual dinner or happy hour! Favorite rolls are: Happy Ebi, Bumble bee, special K and the unagi maki. Also the Unagi nigiri is fantastic. (The Rachel roll was also a fav, but not on the menu anymore, hoping it makes a come back) We usually dine in, but have picked up carry out here numerous times as well and been very happy with the freshness and variety.
Definitely check out a Hachi for some good sushi and more!

Great restaurant, food and service. New to Bozeman but these guys have it dialed. The food is something I crave and the staff is super friendly. Guess I am not surprised considering it's owned by Blue Collar Restaurant Group and all there other restaurants are great too. Make sure you order sushi and the entrees so you get a taste of everything!

This place is Bozeman's newest BEST RESTAURANT!! The sushi is so fresh and delicious and the entrees are to die for. The whole atmosphere is really cool, they really did a great job. They have fresh juice cocktails and a large assortment of sake! Upstairs they have a shuffle board table and it's a great space for private events or to hang with your friends. The service is top notch and the whole vibe is like nothing in Bozeman!

Restaurant wasn’t super busy, plenty of staff and service was still very slow/poor. Weren’t offered more water or cocktails beyond the first. Food was not very flavorful. Not the top sushi in Bozeman that’s for sure.

Ignore the reviews saying "I had to wait for my food." If you want something fast, go to McDonald's. If you want phenomenal service and knowledge about sushi and Japanese pub cuisine, go to Hachi. Incredible food. Experienced chefs and servers. A truly unique and wonderful experience.

Took 30 minutes to be seated despite open tables because the kitchen was backed up with take out orders. Service was incredibly slow although it was not busy. Average cost $15- $18 per sushi roll that are mediocre at best. The particular wine I ordered was out of stock for the evening. They offered a substitute which turned out to be almost double the price ( they did not mention this until the bill arrived). For a place this expensive, i found the disposable wooden chopsticks tacky. Save yourself the trouble and just go to any other sushi spot in town.

We got 5 rolls and while all of them tasted great, they were very poorly constructed. I think the problem is in both the rice and the sushi roller. Rice was not sticking together and everything was falling apart. Did not taste any vinegar in rice either. Making sushi rice is an art and they are not there at all. Out of 5, 4 rolls were just placed together in row, which meant they were not fully cut so we made a mess of trying to pick them off the plate. 90% of sushi making is presentation and they are definitely lacking severely in this department. The sushi cuts varied in size, some being 3x bigger than others. I lived in Asia and can use chopsticks well, but both me and my partner struggled eating one sushi piece together with all the ingredients. I gave them 4 stars for the taste but for the most expensive sushi in Bozeman, I would expect a lot better presentation. Hopefully they teach their rollers to roll better and be more competitive in the market. I will not be back since a lot of the rolls were unreasonably priced over $20. You can get better quality for cheaper in Bozeman.

I really wanted to like this restaurant, it looks nice and I have been thinking about trying it for a while. The service from our waiter was really nice sweet people. Unfortunately I came away and the main experience I felt was underwhelmed. It took over 15 minutes to get a small taster of wine and then another 10 minutes to actually receive the wine. For $24 the poke salad had 2/3 of a cup of very highly salty pokey and 2 cups of rice. I’m sorry to say that that did not seem right. The food overall was very salty and I woke up with an extreme sodium hangover today. I don’t think I’ll be back which is sad. My daughter ordered the fried tofu and it was absolutely tasteless. There was no creativity or thoughtfulness regarding how the tofu was tossed I could’ve done a better job at home. The miso soup was very highly salty. I’m sorry to leave those review like this, but for $75 for what we got, I can’t in good conscience patronize this restaurant again.

I have to give Hachi a two star after two visits. Here are the reasons why….the first visit the food was okay, a lot more expensive than what the quality was. I have tried most other sushi based restaurants and have been consistently happy. Other sushi restaurants/grocery stores in town are the better options comparatively for pricing and quality.

The second time. We ordered two apps, an entree of their special sashimi, and a roll. Our roll was a special roll that fell apart with super soft rice. We explained to our server the problem. It was clear they had went to management and had came back to offer us another roll in replacement…we offered possible dessert. After deciding against dessert we asked for our check where the roll was still charged after saying it would be comped. I ordered another drink after that which then almost equaled our meal with the roll. Then the manager came up and asked about our meal, before actually hearing what the problem was she assumed it was the tabiko we weren’t a fan of. Which I quickly corrected her that I have had tabiko on my rolls and I am more than familiar with it on my roll but like in preference for texture.

Service has been incredible. However, with my food experiences…even after a voucher for a free app or roll. I will not be revisiting.

I love seeing new places open up and am always rooting for them to do well. Hachi was a great experience with great service, but they've still got a little ways to go in refining their dishes so they can compete with the bigger sushi names in the area. Good luck to these guys though, I hope they do well.

We had to wait a very long time for a table. We could see lots of tables open and when we finally asked if we could be seated they took us to one of the empty tables we were starring at for 15 minutes. The food was really not good, not when comparing to all the other sushi restaurants in town. I would say grocery store sushi was better tasting than their 20+ dollar rolls. The only plus was our waiter was super nice the whole time.

Edit: Our second visit was MUCH better! We were impressed with the food and service. Try the KB and the Maguro, they're delicious.

Not great. Our food wasn’t very flavorful or the quality we expected. And the service was extremely slow. There are much better places to grab sushi in Bozeman. Hope this is just a “new restaurant thing” and will get better over time.

Going to leave this place a better review after I try the sushi because I heard it’s great. However, the pork ramen was disappointing— very bland and the only seasoning looked to be oregano, which doesn’t really make sense. The noodles were fantastic but the pork was dry and again, the broth. So bland :(

The batter on the vegetable tempura was bland, heavy, and soft instead of light and crispy, and the accompanying sauce wasn't very tasty. The fish in the rolls was fresh but the rolls overall were just okay in flavor and were expensive. My boyfriend's can of beer was past its best-by-date. Service was friendly, and the place is clean and bright. We probably won't come back, we like the other sushi options in town better.

Was excited about trying this restaurant. This was a mistake. I have never seen maki rolls so small. They were the size of a penny around. A few of the rolls did not have any fish in them which is not acceptable. Also, they fell apart and the rice was not sticky enough. Total waste of money. Go to the other established sushi places in town.

Our service was horrible, the food took 90 minutes and sitting at the bar we watched numerous orders prepared before ours which had come in later. The waitress seemed annoyed with us when she rarely checked in.

When the food arrived, it was horrible. The rolls were small and poorly constructed. We found scales and silver skin in them as well as the fish being poor quality.

There is much better sushi at multiple other places in Bozeman, avoid this place.

Katie was AMAZING and made our night one that deserves 5 stars ⭐️ She was knowledgeable about the menu, gave us great tips, AND managed to get out drinks/food out in a timely manner while also serving lots of other tables.

Excellent addition to the sushi scene in Bozeman! We had two specialty rolls & a regular Maki roll. The meat at Hachi is remarkably fresh and their maki rolls really showcase the high quality fish they use. We’re so glad this is on our side of town- but also very scared for our wallets. It was fine, but nothing special. Very small menu compared to other sushi places, and kind of small rolls, too. The rolls tasted ok but they weren't great. The karaage had nice flavor but the chicken breast was very dry, maybe thighs would be better? Lackluster and underwhelming overall, but not bad. Service was good; thanks Jess!
