We have been here twice recently. On one occasion, we had a group of 6. I thought it might be tricky for the small space, but the staff were pleasant, accommodating and attentive. We tried several items off the menu. Everyone was happy with their food - sushi, noodles, starters, etc. The service was really good. Very cozy and cute spot.

I was really rooting for Karachi but to say their food is a waste of money would be an understatement. We payed almost 100 for one roll and six pieces of nigiri that is a comparable quality to Cub sushi. It takes allot for me to review but I wish I had been warned so I’m doing this for yall reading.

Sushi Experience №5

Came here as a special Christmas present/Friday night date with my husband, who made reservations in advance. We’d heard good things and rarely get the chance to go out since he works in the restaurant industry and I work in retail management, so this was an occasion we were very excited about. We weren’t greeted but walked to the host stand where we were stared at by a blonde waitress with a ratty Fleet Farm hoodie and sparse leggings underneath, who pointed to our table from across the room rather than leading us to it. She was sullen throughout our experience, to a point where I genuinely wondered whether she ought to go home or find a new industry. When taking our order, she asked “what do you want?” as if it pained her to have to ask. Never introduced herself, never spoke about the menu or specials, didn’t offer us drinks or ask if we were ready. Fine, everyone has an off day, that’s whatever and even though it wasn’t a pleasant experience, we were there for both food and atmosphere. We ordered gyoza, karaage, salmon maki rolls, and their summer rolls to share between the two of us. Unfortunately, the gyoza was fishy and I couldn’t stomach it, though my husband didn’t mind (I suspected they shared a pan with some fish sauce or other, not a big deal ultimately but not to my personal taste for a pork gyoza). The first three salmon maki rolls were fine, small and not flavorful but nothing inherently bad, but the fourth tasted strongly of mold, to the point where I drained my water and my cocktail trying to get the taste out of my mouth and still had a strong aftertaste. I asked my partner whether we should say something to our waitress but he said, essentially, that at this point it wasn’t worth it, so we just avoided the rest of the plate. The karaage and summer rolls were nice, but I found myself still hungry after having to skip most of my meal. I figured pancakes would be safe and filling so we ordered the pancake dessert and, unfortunately, they were very dry and the whipped cream they came with was soured, so only had a bite of each before deciding to leave and go elsewhere for a better dessert. It was nice to not have to worry about tipping, but a $110 bill for food that’s gone bad and poor service was a bit of a slap to the face.

We had a positive experience at Kyatchi. The food was good although we liked the skewers and appetizers better than the sashimi and sushi, which were okay but not amazing.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We could not have asked for better service during our time there.

There were many tables in the restaurant. Easy to be seated during lunch time.

Came here for an early dinner based on a review from Eater, and it did not disappoint! Our server Benji was very helpful in making recommendations, as the menu is quite long. We came for the Oshizushi, which was unique but not the best thing we had. The veggie trio was great, with some wasabi pickles, long beans and eggplant -- definitely recommend. Kara-age chicken was a good safe option for anyone who doesn't want fish. We loved the Rayu-Binchu roll! We also did a butterfly roll, which was nice-- very citrusy with the yuzu mayo. Overall, it was a little pricey but we felt the flavor and elegance of the dishes made it worth the money.

The sushi was not worth the price, the ramen was down right disgusting and the chicken teriyaki donburi was nothing spectacular. This is coming from a person who grew up in Hawaii and knows good Japanese food. Worst of all the blonde waitress was rude as hell. I appreciate that the price of the food is meant to pay their workers a living wage but that doesn’t mean you shake your head at a paying customer and act rude. Don’t listen to any crappy food magazine… stay away from this uppity restaurant, especially if you want to impress a date.

Firstly the food. We ordered a $30 summer roll as pictured and it was so lack luster. The fish was not good and the fish to rice ratio was sad. The rice is too starchy and gummy. Just not a pleasant mouth feel experience. Second the experience. The vibes are OFF. The staff was oddly managed. They were not friendly with each other either. It was uncomfortable seeing a negative interaction between staff spill over into the customers experience. The kitchen is a mess. There is clutter all around behind the bar with napkins and other disposables on the floor. There is a sushi bar to sit at but it’s not really an option as the takeout crowd occupies this space. I would not recommend this place to friends or acquaintances.

It’s unassuming, but delicious for this person who lives in San Francisco for 16 years. The snapper sushi is fresh and delicious. But the biggest (and unexpected star) is the wasabi marinated cucumbers. So full of flavor, I had to slap myself.

Service was great, very helpful and accommodating. The sushi, however, was mediocre. For a $30 roll, you’d expect a good amount of fish, but the Summer Roll had just thin slivers of fish surrounded by way too much rice. It also had an overwhelming amount of lemon, making it feel like biting into a lemon with rice.

The regular rolls are very small, you will need at least 2 to even feel like you ate. The taste itself veers on tasteless at times.

Not a sushi restaurant most will be familiar with.

Let me start by saying our server, Ben, was awesome. Great service and friendly. So this is high dollars sushi place, which made us believe that the cut of the fish should be superior and thicker cut. For lunch $41 chirashi with thin cut, and $25 yakisoba with small frozen shrimps were difficult to make sense of it. Our soba was too salty that we ended up using rice to mix in to lower the sodium. And to have open kitchen, sushi chef supposed to wear hat at all time, our visit was quite disappointing. The bar menu on the other hand looks fantastic. I’ll definitely come back for the craft menu and for Ben. The restaurant has a small parking but side street free parking is easy to find.

We came in 40 minutes to close so I understand how that looks. We had just realized on our roadtrip back that we hadn’t eaten all day. I could tell our waitress was a little annoyed but tried to maintain her kind demeanor. We quickly ordered the basic ramen dish and just had water. The dish came out fresh and was really good. We did think that it needed something to really make it amazing. We got out of there with 7 minutes to spare without closing. I don’t like to be an inconvenience so we ate super fast and as a result had belly aches 😂 We weren’t the last people in there so that felt better.

Been here 4 times just this year, it is THE spot for my sushi craving, the only comparably better place in the state is Kado no mise, that’s how good it is. The rice and vinegar balance is perfection - subtlety sweet and savory like fresh, slightly fermented grains. Soft yet never mushy. The kanpyo roll with the calabash gourd is the perfect texture with the rice, and their other offerings like pressed sushi and nigiri use a well respected seafood supplier that high end sushi places in the city use. The ramen is savory and authentic. I see complaints that the maki is small, keep in mind that they don’t have rice on the outside…California rolls originated from you guessed it, California…

We ate here recently for the first time, trying a variety of sushi, ramen, and a gyoza appetizer. The gyoza was disappointing, burned on the bottom, with an overly pressed filling with poor texture. The sushi was alright. We had avocado rolls and salmon rolls. Both were good, if not standout. The veggie ramen was very flavorful and tasty. The pork belly ramen had a broth that tasted burnt. Maybe too much salt. Both were very large and quite filling.

Service was very good, with attentive servers and relatively quick delivery. Gratuity is included in the menu prices. I’m indifferent to the practice, but they could do a better job of communicating the policy.

We felt the bill was a bit high for what we got, but we’ll probably give it another shot in the future.

I have been here twice, once in 2017 and once a week ago (2024), and I know that their Tonkatsu has remained the same since it looks exactly the same as it did 7 years ago. Regardless, I had a good experience here overall, and I would recommend it to people if they ask about Japanese food within the Twin Cities.

For the agedashi tofu, our server poured the liquid after the tofu was brought to our table, which was the first time I have seen it done that way in the Twin Cities. The tonkatsu contained a good amount of rice and meat which was great, but the "potato salad" was bland, which I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be the case. Having some cucumbers and grape tomatoes was good for me, but I still wasn't sure if that was normal. Regardless, I liked it. Other than those, I enjoyed the ramen and the chicken kara.age as well. They were as good as I imagined they would be.

In terms of the nigiri and maki rolls, I thought they were overpriced and there were not enough to fill up my friend's stomach. She had to order additional rolls to ensure that she could get a decent amount of food to be full. Our bill accumulated quickly and ended up being beyond what we had expected.

One thing I would also mention is that Kyatchi is located in a good location that makes it very convenient for those in the King Field area to go there, including walking. If people ask me to recommend 5 Japanese restaurants in the Twin Cities, then I would mention this establishment.

The sushi was fantastic, we got the Chef Nigiri Platter.

Also tried the yakisoba dog - while this is a good tasting hot dog, I felt all you could taste was the seasoning in the meat and the rest of the ingredients were lost in the dish.

Love that everything is reflected in the price of the menu - no separate service charge, no tipping.

The seating is a little snug so you can't avoid overhearing conversations at the tables next to you if you're sitting along the wall.

Sushi Experience №75

Best sushi in town. Chef's nigiri platter was a great mix of everything. Yakisoba dog flavor is mostly bold hot dog with a delicious char. The bun was FANTASTIC - made in house? Service was fantastic. Cocktails were crazy cheap. Only negative is tables are kind of close together. If you have a group of 4 you get to avoid the little groups of tables for 2, or just sit at the bar.

Solid 3.5 stars. Staff is very kind and attentive. With that being said, I’ve been here three times, each time they either didn’t give me my full order (ordered sashimi/salad, never arrived until I mentioned it again to my server), my partner and I got our food at different times (around 10 min staggered and we both got ramen) or I got my appetizer after my entree.

I eat a lot of sushi in the TC area- the sushi is expensive for what you’re getting. Same with the ramen. $21 for ramen, and the broth is chicken rather than pork which is quite disappointing. Yes, chicken in ramen broth is great, but pork is key to good ramen broth… I suppose they keep their prices high because they can (this location is next to Petite Leon, Boludo, and Nighthawks, all just a bit pricey).

On their website it says they have removed tipping from their services which was never mentioned to me even after I tipped every time I went.

This is the place I come to when my other main spots are closed.

We got there when they opened at 4pm on a Tuesday. It was mellow and the perfect time to enjoy their happy hour menu. We got a 6pc roll with scallop and yuzu, very subtle and satisfying flavor. The Suntory Toki drink was like an effervescent light beer, not something I’d order again. However, the junmai ginjo was the perfect refreshment to pair with the karaage. Lastly, we ordered the Tarasando; enjoyable if you’re in the mood for a hot dog styled fish sandwich.
In the past I’ve ordered the curry and it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ordered!
Next time we’re in Minneapolis I’m sure we’ll be back to try more :)
Side note: service was great!

My daughter and I visited Kyatchi in the summer of 2022 and loved it so much we remembered it to return almost exactly a year later, this summer 2023. If I'd reviewed it then I'd have given it 5 stars.

This summer, what a disappointment it was!

We specifically loved their seaweed salad, which had been unlike all others because it contained at least 3 types of seaweed. Between the three of us, we ordered 4 - only they were sold out. Boo. But you know, sometimes it happens...

But then we ordered a cocktail and they were sold out of that too. Huh?

And then to top it off, our waiter was terrible. He was sullen and got FOUR things wrong with our order. When I pay $250 for dinner for three people the least I expect is that the order is correct.

The sushi was good - but in the twin cities there are tons of other options that offer good sushi for half the price. Go there.

High note: The "summer role" sushi roll ($30) was phenomenal

First of all- the pressed salmon sushi was out of this world! A friend of mine has been RAVING about the pressed sushi for the past 2 years, so my expectations were high. It totally exceeded my expectations- zesty, buttery, and the perfect balance of textures. We also ordered barley tea, gyoza, a red snapper roll, and a yellow tail roll. The yellow tail roll was exceptional. The red snapper was good, but the flavor wasn’t my favorite (personal preference). The gyoza was delightful too. The barley tea was a great addition to the meal and was the perfect warming element on a chilly night. We were satisfied by the amount of food we ordered, but I would recommend ordering a couple of additional rolls if you’re really trying to be pleasantly full after the meal. Overall, great experience. We will be returning soon- probably for happy hour!

The food was excellent at Kyatchi. It’s just that I spent so many years in Japan, and the price I pay for the same type of food here seems so high. But that’s probably not fair at all to Kyatchi and other local Japanese restaurants so I kept five stars for this review.

The food is authentic and the menu choices are rather unique, like Age-bitashi Donburi, which is something my mother used to cook. Yakisoba dog was great too which is typically served without a hotdog in Japan, along with traditional potato salad made with Japanese mayo and chopped up cucumber, also something my mother used to make.

Hitachino beer is hard to find here, but they had two kinds. I had a glass of Yuzu lager which I highly recommend.

We had a great time and we will be coming back.

This review is long overdue. Kyatchj is my fave place for vegan sushi in Minneapolis. Their veggie Kara age remains one of my fave foods from anywhere and I have to have it at least once a month. The seaweed salad puts all others to shame. I finally also tried the Wasabizuke and it is a new fave. Vegan caterpillar roll. Yes. Vegan chef’s plate is also always a delight. I just love this place.

If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant in South Minneapolis, you might want to check out this place. While there's no Japanese chef or server on-site, the restaurant offers a beautiful Japanese-themed décor and a menu of delicious Japanese cuisine that has earned it multiple awards, including Best Sushi Award by City Pages and by Mpls St. Paul Magazine. Interestingly, it has also won the award for Best Hot Dog by Star Tribune and People Magazine.

During our visit, I ordered one of my favorites, the "Chef Sashimi Platter," which consisted of colorful and beautifully presented salmon (sake), scallops (hotate), sea bass (Suzuki), Pacific yellowtail (Hamachi), and albacore tuna (bincho). Each piece was well-prepared and incredibly fresh, as promised. While the restaurant didn't have the popular Udo noodle soup, the ramen noodle soup was still quite good.

The restaurant is located in a small business district on Nicollet Ave S, and our waitress Kathleen, dressed in a Girl Scout-like uniform, was very friendly and provided excellent service throughout our meal.

One of the most interesting aspects of this restaurant was that when the bill came, there was no place for a tip. We were told that the general tip was already built into the charges, but additional tips are always welcome. This was an interesting and unique touch. I highly recommend giving it a try!

Fantastic service, amazing food and drinks. Had some sushi that I've never tasted before. Seating is tight so be prepared to snuggle a little with your neighbor but it's totally worth it

My wife craves the Sake oshizushi and they never disappoint with their highballs and whisky selection, had a Nikka Yoichi last night which I don't typically see out in the wild. Always a pleasant time for us, some day I'll grab a hot dog too.

If you sold baseball t merch i would buy one, by the by.

Stuck mostly to the rolls and nigiri — everything was very tasty with generous cuts of fish. Got a nice primer on Japanese whiskey from the bartender.

We went there with my daughter and SIL because he had always wanted to try the Japanese Hot Dogs which this place is known for.

We had the dumplings and the fried tofu to start. Both were excellent. For dinner we had the Japanese hot dogs of course. We had three different dogs.

So.. Maybe it's because I'm not *from* Minneapolis but the reason for my 3 star review isn't the quality of the food. It was all quite good. It's the cost. 15 bucks for a *hot dog*. Was it a good hot dog? oh yes.. Was it worth 15 bucks? Nope.. it was not. Ultimately, it was still a hot dog. Nice bun.. nice crunch.. nice toppings. But not 15 bucks worth IMHO.

They charge 19% for tip/giving their employees a living wage. I'm ok with that. That is included in the menu pricing and there is no tipping. Ok.. so... maybe then call it a $13 hot dog. Still way to much for a hot dog. Had they been 8 or 9, I would have rated them 4 stars at least. I've had Chicago hot dogs in Chicago where the toppings were just as good and more toppings for 5-6 bucks. And the bun and dog were just as good.

Note - the dog does come with a small spoonful of Japanese potato salad. Still not worth it.

Sorry.. the price just leaves me with a 3 star review.

This was a delight to visit. They have incredible, sustainably caught, fresh fish and excellent, friendly service. The bartender was a total pro and whipped up one of the tastiest cocktails I’ve ever had. Highly recommended for date nights.

It's winter, and despite sitting in the table right in front of the door we were quite comfortable thanks to the curtain they have set up. Street parking wasn't hard on this early Thursday dinner out with my 14yo who wanted ramen.

We were fortunate to arrive during happy hour and the veggie trio (pictured) was fantastic. I enjoyed a few other dishes as well as the nigori sake. The seabass oshizushi (pressed sushi, pictured) really stood out as a unique but traditional item I haven't seen yet at other local sushi places. My kid reports the ramen as 10/10, mentioning the melt-in-your-mouth pork it contained. The broth was richly flavored (roasty almost?) but light, not the super-thick tonkotsu you might find elsewhere.

No credit card tipping (extra percentage added in menu prices) left me feeling like it was a great value, but wished I could have tipped my server more for his very friendly service.

The only sushi I've ever been served with several large bones in the fish. They comped the sushi with the bones, but considering the insanely overpriced portions (up to $13 for ONE piece of nigiri), the low quality of the sushi was shocking. Removing bones from the fish is basic sushi 101--I was appalled. Not only did I get the bones, but the other servings of fish were the smallest I've ever seen. The nigiri is the kind of sushi you'd expect to be served at an airport or from a grocery store deli. Save your dollars and avoid this restaurant until they get their act together. This place is also known for their hot dogs. Perhaps stick to those. If I ever go back, that's what I'll order.

We were a group of 4 people, all vegetarians. We made a reservation in advance and were promptly seated on arrival.

We ordered a tofu kara-age and shishito peppers skewers to start with. Both were very tasty. We then ordered caterpillar rolls, kanpyo and ume shiso rolls. Everything was super tasty and I thought fairly priced too. For mains we had two kitsune to share among the 4 of us.
Our check came out to 100 usd approximately for 4 people which I thought was reasonable for the delicious food and the fantastic service.

I will be sure to come here again if I ever want to have Japanese cuisine. To have so many options as a vegetarian was truly great.

Food checked all the boxes for quality, presentation, variety (including a respectable number of vegan friendly options), and taste! Service was exceptional, Max was so welcoming and made us feel very special, even recommending a new cocktail that absolutely lived up to the hype. We will return next time we are in The Cities!

Food was way too expensive for what it is and what I can get elsewhere for the same quality sushi. Hotdog was crazy salty. Potato salad that came with the hotdog tasted bland and runny. Didn’t have spicy Mayo which I personally think is weird. Idk this place seems like they trying too hard to be “authentic”.

Came here last Friday and was actually disappointed in all the good reviews was expecting a higher bar with it. The sushi being mediocre at best but the service was great just couldn't justify it with the food being barely ok at best. One of the summer dishes just had a lemon not fully peeled and just tasted very sour if you take it had a better taste.

The staff ruins this place. Ingredient quality is good, but execution is bad. Scallops are practically minced in the Hotate roll and the rolls are squeezed to such a small diameter that I wanted to cry. Wait staff is very unprofessional, beyond casual, and were serving each other cocktails during service. Luckily one of the only two professional kitchen staff members asked them to cut it out and they just continued drinking behind the back kitchen door. If it wasn’t for the two proper cooks and decent ingredient quality, it would’ve been a one or no star review. Just sad, very sad. Promptly went and had a proper dinner elsewhere. The fact that there is a 19% gratuity added already that you get taxed on didn’t even factor in.

My wife and I went there for happy hour sushi and we felt like this was great value!

We got a negihama roll, Kara-age, and the summer roll.

The negihama roll was ok, but nothing special.

The kara-age was absolutely delicious. The chicken was deliciously browned and with the Mayo dressing was absolutely phenomenal.

The summer roll was delicious. Lemony, creamy, with delicious fish. It was the most delicious sushi roll I’ve ever had.

The dining area is small and cute, but very loud. Dinner for 2 of us came out to around $50/person. We got a drink each, shared a couple of appetizers and 2 sushi plates.

The tofu karaage was very good— simple and perfectly crispy. Also enjoyed the sake.

The pressed sake oshizushi was visually interesting, but the lemon slices were cut thick & the flavor was overpowering. It wasn’t pleasant to eat. The butterfly roll was messy & bland. In both of these, the fish ended up not being noticeable under the other ingredients which was disappointing. We’ve had better sushi from the grocery store.

Overall the quality and experience just wasn’t worth the price.

Disappointing. Went to celebrate our daughters first day of school. Just moved to the area and was in the mood for some vegan sushi which they seemed to have some decent options for. Decided to share the veggie caterpillar roll since it was 20.50: not worth it. Expected the broccolini to be hot and it was cold, just a lot of cold bland dishes. Dousing our dishes in soy sauce for flavor didn’t help. We were so excited to check out this new place and it was SO disappointing. We def won’t be back. They missed a dish on our order and no one came to check on us except to clear our plates, luckily we weren’t charged but no acknowledgement. Also confusing on the gratuity.. I overheard part convo on the process from another table but our waiter just gave us our check and left. 0/5 stars. We had to get White Castle after, still hungry and unfulfilled.

To tip or not to tip… The happy hour food was just ok. There was no tip line on the bill. They just add something like 18% to the check without saying anything. When I enquired they brought me a handout about the service fee. Owners need to up front about all these various posted or not posted. “fees” we’re all paying. And are employees getting a fare wage and medical or not? Etc etc…
