While I had one of the best bites of food of my life here (toro, fatty tuna,) the real highlight was the immaculate service and delightful conversation with the chef at the counter. He was insightful and courteous throughout, and watching him work was so fun +A.

January 2025: 'Matsu' I've now experienced each tier of dining here. After doing a similar experience in Japan I was a bit worried I'd be disappointed. I was wrong. Each and every dish was amazing. Our group constantly was smiling and being mind blown at the intense flavors or melt in your mouth amazingness that we were experiencing. Our chef was extremely skilled and I really appreciated that he let me practice my Japanese with him. My only qualm was with the tea. I am a tea specialist so when I am served something sub par, especially in a high ened place like this, I am surprised. The jasmine and sencha were either not brewed properly, there could have been other issues too.

Dec 2021: 'Ume' with my sister. Every dish is fantastic. But the experience is different since the chef isn't personally in front of interacting with you.

July 2021: 'Take'. After watching documentaries on similar restaurants I was ecstatic to give this one a try. There is a reason or few they call this the number 1 sushi restaurant in MN. This is not just a gastro, mind blown, tasty retreat, it's also an immersive experience. You're chef will take you around Japan. Their knowledge is incredible and I loved that they're indulged me in my broken Japanese. As a big fan of tea I also need to point out their wonderful choices of matcha and sencha. Both high quality. The sencha was fantastic.

I don't have anything bad to say about this place. I enjoyed every minute of my time here, and it's worth the money I spent. I've been to Michelin star Omakase restaurants, and this is right up there with the best of them. The chef deserves a James Beard award and any other honors for curating that lovely menu.

Sat for the Omakase menu at the chef’s counter for the 10 course sushi dinner. I felt immediately welcomed and cared for before we even sat down with wait staff taking our coats and guiding us to our seats. As someone who was looking for a traditional Japanese sushi experience it was just what I was looking for. I can understand how people who maybe don’t know what that looks like or how subdued and focused the flavors are with traditional sushi might be let down by the experience. Don’t expect spicy mayo, sugary glazes and explosive flavors. The focus is the fish and the rice. I also highly recommend the optional sake pairing.

I loved my experience at Kado no Mise. The atmosphere is super relaxing, and it's clean and bright which is refreshing when so many restaurants are dark and moody. The service was beyond fantastic--and I work in the service industry, so I don't say that lightly! Yes, the portions are small, but with the pacing I felt full at the end. The sushi fish comes from Japan and is seasonal, so the prices reflect this. That said, if you are looking to eat on a budget, come back another time to experience this treat. This was my first full Japanese dining experience, and I felt comfortable asking questions; the staff was so friendly and considerate. I loved it.

Best experience I've had in a restaurant setting. Was always hesitant of fine dining due to the high price tag, but can confidently say that everything is worth every dollar and more here.

Words cannot describe how eloquently put together each dish is. The flavors are unique in the best possible way, in an environment that you will enjoy so much that the hours will pass by without you realizing.

My repeated patronage is guaranteed here for many years to come.

This is our second time visiting Kado no Mise (upstairs, 2nd floor) for our sushi splurge. It's super pricey, but the presentation, customer service, artistry (knife cuts to the octopus and sushi), and quality were INCREDIBLE. The Twin Cities have been missing an amazing sushi restaurant for decades, and now, this one hits the mark. Having eaten amazing sushi in Japan, this one is spot on. Expensive, but worth the splurge.

I've been twice- once for the Chef's Counter and once for the whiskey bar. The Chef's Counter was one of the most memorable meals of my life. Beautiful presentation, incredible service, exquisite food. It was a wonderful combination of inventive preparations and high quality simple cuts of fish. Expensive but worth it for a very special occasion.
The whiskey bar is also a nice little stop in. It's intimate, but you feel like you're in a totally different world from the restaurant. The whiskey menu is organized by distillers, for the most part. There are a handful of cocktails and n/a cocktails as well. One of my top five Old Fashions in Minneapolis, for my money. They don't offer food at the bar, but it's a perfect stop over if you're waiting for a table.

None of the courses were particularly enjoyable. Some courses were fishy and unappealing. The meal was incredibly expensive - we booked the $115/pp dinner with a $50 bottle of wine, and after tax and service charge the bill was $380. Only good part of the restaurant is the fish quality.

Portions? Laughably small. Good taste? Pretty bland. Nigiri? Too much wasabi and soggy rice.
Desert? A scoop of sorbet.

Overall a poorly designed “tasting” menu- more like a small omakase, but worse.

Also, we asked for more food because we were hungry and there was only tuna left in the entire restaurant. How embarrassing! We could not even cure our hunger.

One and only Japanese restaurant owns/runs by Japanese chef in Minneapolis. High quality fish and good cost performance. We had Omakase. As I mostly eat sushi in Japan I was afraid to try especially Uni(Sea urchin) because it can be bad even in Japan but it turned out great. My favorite sushi as Toro/fatty tuna was also yum. I can trust their pick also where they import from.
We didn’t try but they offer paring sake. They also have good variety of Japanese whiskey selection. I went home very happy and I will come again when I visit Minneapolis next time. I highly recommend for special occasions or visiting Minneapolis from major (expensive) cities in the US. BC if this quality of Omakase in NYC would be double the price.

Kado No Mise is the most authentic Japanese food experience (omakase or otherwise) that we've had outside of Japan itself. Everything from the decor and aesthetics to the food brought back memories from my favorite trip that I've ever taken.

A nice touch was the seating to start the night - we waited in a small foyer, and then we were all seated together, followed by attentive and excellent service. The food itself was excellent - both my partner and I particularly loved the variations on tuna and ordered extra when offered.

Here is a twist that I did not expect - the final course was celery sorbet, to which I can say with certainty: I have never had celery sorbet before, and likely won't again.

An absolute gem in downtown Minneapolis that I recommend to anyone.

We came for Omakase Matsu and also had the sake pairings. For two people, the highest level of omakase, a flight of paired sake, plus a couple extra orders of nigiri, we approached $500. The bill is total, there was not even a line for leaving a tip.

I think this is a 5 star experience and worth the money for you if you know you already like the style of food. The other person in my party has eaten and prepared Japanese food for years and thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal, as well as the sake.

On the other hand, while I consider myself an adventurous eater, and after trying everything, I found the food to be almost off putting. I would not take someone here if they don’t know what they’re in for: cold jellies, custards in warm broth, tiny whole squids, eels, obviously raw fish, etc. In other words: I don’t think this is a place you go to be introduced to the style of cuisine.

The service was without reproach, best service I’ve ever had at any restaurant across any cuisine or city in this country. The service ware was also so unique. Every piece was unique, repaired with bits of gold, and traditional. Very beautiful. Everything done here is done with a high level of perfection and attention to detail.

Very disappointing experience. Nigiri / Sushi was OK, but nothing spectacular. Definitely not at the level you’d expect for the price point. Way too much wasabi on each piece of nigiri. The rice was not up to par in texture or flavor. Japanese cuisine has so many interesting flavors and textures to offer, it’s a shame they were not on display throughout the tasting menu. The most interesting dish was a small egg custard with shiitake and fish. the nigiri (2 courses of it) were too much the same — no interesting options or stand outs. Tuna and mackerel. That’s it. Service was so-so. The first few courses were delivered at a good pace… but the nigiri servings were a long wait. Our total bill for 3 people WITHOUT alcohol was $500 all in. There is comparably good — and arguably better — sushi / nigiri to be had in the Twin Cities for a fraction of this price.

All through the worst part of the pandemic, we tried to get take out from our favorite places. Restaurants really struggled, and it seemed important to keep the ones we loved. Kado no Mise was one of them. We just went back for a matsu table service multi course dinner. It is such a wonderful place, and the food is perfectly prepared classical Japanese food. We also opted for the sake tasting, which I highly recommend. It was really marvelous.

There were many courses. We started with sakizuke, which was made of surf clam, spinach, tofu skin, and shitake mushroom. They served "wandering poet" sake with it. Sake names are the best! I won't enumerate all the many courses, but every one was perfect. We ended with a fabulous sequence of nigiri, including one topped with seared waygu.

The most crazy course of the evening was fugu! Yes- the infamous puffer fish. It apparently is flown in from Japan and verified to be safe. It was interesting, for certain!

The chef collects antique service ware from Japan. Each dish is served on beautiful and unique dishes. Each sake was served in a unique cup. These items are beautiful, and it feels very special eating from them.

They are located at 33 North 1st Avenue in the North loop.

I think it is impossible to eat here and not leave feeling calm and happy. The chef is the lovely smiling man in the bow tie. Be sure to wave!

Kada no Mise offers stunning food in their tucked away downtown location. Their omakase experience was delightful, featuring unique and delicate nigiri that blew us away, along with choice Japanese delicacies we've seen nowhere else.
Alas, their tucked away location led to a very strange atmosphere, particularly the odd little room my wife and I were seated in. The dark room would have been atmospheric if it weren't for the bright red fire alarm and the three windows, two of which looked out to the bar and restaurant. The servers were all kind and knowledgeable, but there seemed to be a lack of coordination between them and a lack of practice on their delivery.
An excellent food experience, though understand the rest of the dining experience may not reflect the pricetag.

Atmosphere, presentation, and staff were great.

Food, not so much. Most of the fish dishes and nigiri were fishy. I had high expectations after doing some research on the chef and for the price.

Currently, as it stands, NYC is beyond reach.

I had Omakase in NYC for 75/person 3 days prior, and it was best sushi I've ever had, same fish menu but very different in taste and quality.

We spent nearly $600.00 on food and drinks. Sadly, the omakase was not worth $145/person, although the drinks were fantastic.

To start off, when reserving online, they said there were no counter seats available. The entire counter was empty when we ate there that night.

Staff were very rushed. Upon arrival, they gave us the drink menu and proceeded to come ask us whether we decided on what to drink several times after we asked for a bit to think. During the courses, they also came over to look whether we finished the food every few minutes, so they could then bring the next item. It was quite uncomfortable to say the least. There was nothing overtly unfriendly with the staff, but service felt like we were a nuisance that needed to eat and get out, which does not fit the atmosphere of a restaurant that costs this much.

The food was also fishy and not optimal, and I really can't complain much about this because it is Minnesota, but one of the cuts was honestly poorly executed. Overall, much too expensive for what they offer in terms of atmosphere and food: cramped room, rushed service, mediocre food.

The only positive was the person I dealt with through their email service was kind and helpful.

The nigiri sushi was good but the apetizers just didnt really bring any new flavors or leave anything to be desired. Most of the nigiri was good but I did not enjoy the sardines. Everything was perfect. The greeting from the Sushi chefs, the staff, the service and the incredible deliciousness of each course. My only suggestion is to not sweep away the plates so quickly. One time I was still luxuriating in the taste of the tuna when the server asked if she could take my plate. Small detail but important to the experience. This restaurant has multiple formats and offers special experiences. This is my second time to this building (as it is now - it has been a Japanese restaurant for decades). Thank you for making this special occasion so special. If my friends from Tokyo ever come to visit, I will bring them here. Arigato 🙏

This is easily one of the best meals I've ever had in the city. The Omakase was thoughtful, well executed, and beautifully presented. If you're looking for a place to go that will impress your date/friends/family -- look no further just book your reservation and enjoy. Splurge for the sake pairing, it's absolutely worth it.

My wife and i had take experience. It was awesome. All the courses were fresh and strategically served and displayed. The sushi was fresh as well and out of this world. The otaro tuna was INSANE! Tho ive had mackerel one other time aside from tonight and i can say it wasnt any better the second time around 😂 wonderful experience regardless of the mackerel. Would definitely recommend to everyone looking for a good night out to enjoy a very nice dinner.

We opted to try the omakase take menu w/ sake pairings for 2 to celebrate our anniversary, and we had a fantastic time! Not only was our meal easily some of the best food and sake we have ever had, sitting at the chef's counter gave us the opportunity to learn so much about the preparation of the meal. We really enjoyed the conversation with the chef as well! What stands out to me the most is how much effort was put in to making our experience special. I am looking forward to going back again in the future!

The staff were incredible. I love all of their ceramics and the experience. It's a really nice and quiet restaurant.

I had the omakase matsu. Everything was so fresh and clean tasting! The wagyu a5 just melted in your mouth. The egg custard warmed me up, the flavors had so much depth to it.

We did the Kaiseki Furukawa experience. I loved how small the seating space was, maybe eight people total so it was very intimate. However, we went with another couple and had a great evening sharing and delighting in our tasting of 10 courses. I did the wine and sake pairing, and it was interesting and thoughtful, and the waiters were all excellent at their interactions and descriptions of everything we were eating and drinking. I know the menu changes seasonally, and it felt like a huge honor to try some of the rare dishes that Furukawa presented to us with his sous chefs. You can tell that he loves what he does, cares for each plate, and there is such a wide variety of everything from mushrooms to fish to sacred broth. He even sent us home with extra rice balls that were left over from our experience. I haven’t even been downstairs to the main restaurant, but I can tell you I will definitely be going back to this.

I never leave reviews for restaurants... like ever. But the dining experience I had was absolutely one of the best of my entire life. Firstly, our Chef Jeff. Otherwise known as Jeff The Chef, was the best dude ever. Funny, thoughtful, and the exact person you want for a front of house position like this. GIVE THAT MAN A RAISE.

Secondly, the food was INCREDIBLE. Every single piece was so fresh and truly melted in your mouth. The combo of flavors and spices left my mouth break dancing with excitement. I would laugh after every single piece because it just got better and better and better.

If you're looking at a top tier restaurant in Minneapolis for sushi and traditional Japanese, this is the place. The competition is not even close.

Came here for the omakase and loved it! Yes it is pricey, but it is an experience. This is as close to authentic Japanese food you can get in MN. Shige took care of us that night and we had a blast talking to him as he served us our food. He even took detail of which hand we use our utensils with. Yes, the portions are small, but the quality of the ingredients is amazing. You can tell there is care and thought when they prepare the food and serve it to you. Highly recommend if you are willing to spend more $ on quality.

Exquisite atmosphere with great food. We had the Matsu menu, which was $145 per person because of the nigiri, and that was definitely the highlight because the fish and the wagyu were fresh and tender. Some other dishes like the chawanmushi, I have had better ones for much cheaper prices in China. Therefore I will say that the price vs. quality imbalance is still quite there, even if Japanese food is in general expensive here in the United States. It is an excellent place for a one-time experience, but that was about it for me.

If I could give a million stars I would. We had the large omakase to celebrate SO birthday. We felt so taken care of sitting at the sushi bar from start to finish. Every dish was a a new flavor adventure and then once we hit the sushi part it was like fireworks. I have never had better sushi in my life (and this includes fancy places on the coasts of the US). The details were so delightful. SO had the sake pairing and was thrilled with the variety and pairing, I had two of their house old fashioneds.
We had the best experience, right down to the Polaroid photo taken and given to us at the end. Oh and the valet service was fabulous. Thank you for such a lovely evening!

My friend and I had the Take menu and experience. We really enjoyed sitting at the bar in front of the Sushi Chef, watching them create the incredible foods we ate and chatting with them about their background and the food they prepared for us. The food was exceptional, high quality ingredients and simple yet dynamic and with depth of flavor. The cocktails were excellent, too. I had the Sotoku, Vesper, and Kado old fashioned, all of which I recommend (especially the old fashioned). We also loved the ambiance of the upstairs dining and whisky bar, which were quiet and intimate. We both thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and highly recommend it!

Ordered the Matsu for the $145 experience, first time back in the building since the old Origami, lots of memories, but the new remodel is a beautiful modern style with a Japanese touch. The food came out in what seemed like an endless wave of fresh delicious Japanese food. Freshest I've ever had even on the coasts. It appears that Kado no Mise is shooting for a Michelin Star, and honestly they would problem be considered if Michelin Star were to come to Minneapolis, it's that good. So besides extreme near perfect quality of food, flavor, presentation, valet service, hosting, and serving service, what struck me the most is how I felt after the experience. It was more refreshment head to toes than 2 hours at a luxurious spa! A truly magical experience, and my new favorite restaurant in Minneapolis. 1 Michelin Star :)

At Kado no Mise, Minneapolis’s premier sushi restaurant, no detail is overlooked. From the elegant, minimalist decor of the restaurant to the precise execution with which each dish is crafted, diners can expect a thoughtful and thoroughly enjoyable experience while dining here.

As part of the omakase menu, we tasted through a wide variety of starter and nigiri sushi which were all incredibly fresh and flavorful. Each piece is hand made by expert sushi chefs immediately before it’s served to you, ensuring the freshness and quality of each bite. Some standouts included the winter yellowtail, as well as the Hokkaido uni, and the wild caught bluefin chūtoro. Each of these pieces was packed with flavor and allowed the diner to explore the unique texture of each fish. Unlike many sushi restaurants in the US that rely on deep fried rolls and spicy sauces to add complexity to their dishes, Kado no Mise let’s the quality of their seafood speak for itself.

The spirits selection at Kado no Mise is also excellent. They have a wide variety of Sake, wine, and cocktails that all pair well with the fish being served. With the knowledgeable guidance of our server, we opted for a clean Junmai style that was expertly crafted and was also affordably priced.

If you’re a fan of sushi, and are looking for a way to experience a wide variety of fish prepared by masters of their craft, I highly recommend Kado no Mise.

Amazing authentic keiseki dinner place. Head chef and owner Shigeyuki is a wonderful host! The meal was prepared perfectly and he even put up with my awful Japanese speaking. Very polite, very professional.

We had the omakase (chef's selections) and I was a little afraid of getting something I wouldn't like but everything was fantastic.

The restaurant itself is immaculate. Very clean, and organized, and considering the square footage, the space is utilized very well.

The Lemon Beach drink is awesome.

I can't say enough good things about this place. It's the best Japanese in all of Minnesota, and may be one of the best kept secrets.

I can't wait to come back! Arigatou gozaimashita Furukawa-san!

Well, Kaiseki Furukawa upstairs is my favorite restaurant in Minneapolis, so my wife and I wanted to give Kado No Mise a try.

We went there with our kids and had the omokase (chef’s choice) at the sushi counter on Father’s Day.

It’s really good. Amazingly good.

We used to live in New York and it’s on par with the best places there (Sushi Yasuda, Nobu, Sushi by Gari, Bond Street, etc.).

I noticed a lot of unfavorable reviews for Kado were from people who had the wrong expectation: they were looking for cheaper sushi that would fill you up. Now, I love Sushi Train and we eat there regularly. I recommend it.

But sometimes you want ridiculously creative, uniquely Japanese tastes. Refined. That leave you saying “wow!”

That’s what Kado No Mise does to you.

Do yourself a favor and get the omakase. You won’t regret it.

EDIT One: Just came again. Omakase at the chef’s table upstairs. Ridiculous. So good.
