Sushi Café

I want to start off with that sushi isn't my favorite go to. But I did have someone with who loves sushi and eats it quite frequently.

The first thing I want to speak to is on the menus, the prices were crossed off and hand written ones were in place. The hand writing was difficult, at best, to make out. Personally, not a fan of that.

I did defer to the person that was with, who loves sushi for their input. Their opinion was the sushi was fresh. The texture was perfect, and the flavor was spot on. However, they said the Wasabi wasn't very spicy or flavorful.

I tried the General Tso's chicken with white rice. I thought the rice was superb! I really enjoyed it. The chicken was good, but very chewy.

They had a large selection of Boba tea. Again, not my thing, but something I feel I should point out.

I felt that overall, it was a bit pricey. Staff was friendly. But, again, you don't really know the prices as they write them onto the menus.

What happened to this place. 5 years ago this place was good. The food was on point, the staff didn’t do pull-ups in the doorway… To call it disgusting doesn’t do it justice. The rice was the only thing I could take more than a few bites of and even that was questionable.

As far as the “tuna” in my spicy “tuna” roll goes. I’m pretty sure that’s not tuna. If anything it’s just bread crumbs mixed with spicy mayo. I’m also pretty sure the chicken was precooked along with the rice. How do you explain rice that is hot and cool in the same bite ? And the miso soup, it’s more like dish water, how can your miso soup be so cloudy. A good miso is the same as Pho, if it’s cloudy you need more work…

As far as reading the reviews and responses from the owner. This owner probably doesn’t know how to run a restaurant much less staff it. The food is below average for the prices you are charging. I ran restaurant for 12 years and this one makes me sad because it was once good… whatever happened definitely reflects through to your guests…

and you don’t need that many to-go boxes…

What a surprise!! This place is amazing. I didnt think a tiny sushi place out in the suburbs can serve up such delicious food. Boy, was I wrong. We came once before but was turned away because of the price. But after reading constant positive reviews from a local FB page, I had to try. I ordered the salmon poke bowl with greens. It came with miso soup and side salad. The ginger dressing for the salad was awesome; it was the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and subtle spice. The poke bowl was the best part, generous portions of meat. I was afraid the bowl was going to be 80% greens, which is how other places do it because they're stingy cheap. The fish tasted great and the toppings were great. I would love to go back. The CA roll was good too.

The restaurant is clean and nice. We got the pecan shrimp, crunch roll, shrimp tempura roll, and chicken Pad Thai. The food portions were big, food tastes great, and the pricing is reasonable.

First if you don’t like sushi don’t worry, they have other options

Have been a couple times now. The bubble tea is great. I chose the Honeydew Milk with Lychee jelly. If you haven’t had bubble tea then that will sound odd. But it’s delicious.

The poke bowl with vegetables was really good. I’m guessing it might be a little better with rice but I got what I wanted which is fantastic.

It comes with a very small side salad which had the most amazing salad dressing. I was told it was made in house. One of the best salad dressings I’ve had.

Its a long narrow restaurant so during the extremely cold days that I’ve been there it’s a little chilly.

All of the staff seem extremely friendly and kind.

My son and I came in today at opening time, (we are from Hastings) I am pregnant and craving sushi (which is a no no as most know) they were very kind and helped me find a roll I can eat safely! I also ordered the pad Thai which was AMAZING and a very large portion. My son had the orange chicken bento box and let me tell you, THE BEST orange chicken we have ever had! It came with fried rice, wontons, salad, a fried egg roll type thing and a soda!!!100% the best egg roll I’ve ever had! The cream cheese wontons were on the sweet side but also very very good. The matcha boba tea is spot on as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place! You might have a bit of a wait but with food like this it’s so worth it.

We got chicken fried rice, steak fried rice, godzilla roll, tempura tuna roll, chicken wings, and takoyaki. Two different visits for takeout.

It was all DELICIOUS!!

Don’t know what workers other reviews referred to as “rude” - the ones we saw were SO NICE and thoughtful! I’ve also read a negative review or two about the prices being changed - they changed them on their menu in store so it’s all good there :)

Would highly recommend!! The fried rice is to die for, the yum yum sauce exactly that (YUMMY), and the sushi is great!! Chicken wings very very seasoned (not for the weak when it comes to peppery spice).

Do not eat here. The menus they hand you when you walk in to order are not the prices you will be charged. The boba was gross, extremely artifical tasting, overly syrupy, and warm. The sushi had a terrible flavor and texture, it felt really slimy. The fried rice smelt like it had gone bad. Oh yes, and when I opened the container for the salad dressing THERE WAS A HAIR IN IT. The miso soup looked and tasted like dish water.

We called and explained what was wrong and the gentleman was not helpful or nice. He completely ignored the fact that there was hair in our food. Said that when he went and checked on the fried rice it was fine. We asked for a refund at least for the food because it was not eaten. He said he would consider it if we came back with the food. Which normally would be fine, however it would have been a 40 minute drive at least for us.

Spent 18 dollars on two bobas for 1 to have no ice and be so thin it was like water not to mention warm. The other boba had a thick cafeína powder taste to it but the popping boba was alright. Definitely not worth the money I spent at all. Also,there were bugs on the walls so I had to change seats while waiting. Will not be coming back.

The food is good. But--I really can't stand it when restaurants advertise their prices one way on their menus and then when they ring you up the prices are marked higher.

Their entire menu is all wrong price wise. The guy who checked me out said oh yeah just increase all those prices by 5%. I paid 17 bucks for one small roll. Kinda crazy. Prob won't come back bc of the poor service and non-transparency with their prices

Of course I know prices had to increase because of the pandemic. Everyone did that that’s fine—that is not the issue. The issue is that you do not want to update your menus to reflect your new prices so it has become an issue of false advertising.

Why would you just assume everyone would know your new prices? What about someone coming to your restaurant for the first time? Thank you for the free soda but honestly, I am not a soda drinker. I have no problem with your prices as long as they are advertised on your menus correctly and I know what I’m paying for ahead of time. That’s pretty standard for a restaurant. A customer has the right to know what they are ordering and how much it actually costs and not just be surprised at check out.

MN Health Department needs to inspect this place. I got food poisoning this past weekend from here. Rice was definitely bad. It smelled funny but sometimes fried rice will have fish sauce so I ate a few bites anyways and it immediately didn’t sit well. 2 hours later I’m puking up black rice up.

The sushi is also very low quality. HY-VEE is better quality, fresher, and more affordable.

I guarantee you if you go measure the temperature of the rice in this restaurant, it will be a health violation. Rice is not suppose to sit at room temperature. I live a split second away from this place and I showed up before the food was ready to pick it up. Never again.

My first time here…there were bugs crawling on the window and when I told the guy at the register, he said he’ll take care of it but then continued to ignore it. Lost my appetite when one fell on me. Then as I went up to ask for the tray covers for my food, I see the same guy making an order, touching the trash can and proceeded to use the same hand to scrape food off the scraper and put the scraper back on the food counter….no second thought on washing it after you just touched a trash can???? Wont be returning.

There shouldn't be bugs inside where your customers eat their food. And there is NO misunderstanding, I was standing there waiting to ask for container covers. Your staff grabbed the trash can, moved it, use the same hand to scrap food off the scraper into the trash and placed the scraper back onto the counter.

I got the chicken pad thai medium spice. I love pad thai and it was good, but not spicy enough to be considered "medium spice". The portion was smaller than any other restaurant I've been to. You can dine in, but there's only a few tables. The employees were very nice and it didn't take long for my food to be ready. This is my first time going to Sushi Cafe, so I can't comment on any other food. I love thai tea, but the large was over $7, which is even more that what Starbucks charges for most of it's drinks, so I didn't get it. There's not many restaurants that offer Thai food in the Woodbury/ Cottage Grove/ Hastings/ Afton area, so I'm grateful there are at least some.

If I could give zero stars I would. Staff is rude and hard to communicate with. About a year ago I came in to check the process of my online order and watched a male employee take my sushi out of the trash, put it on the counter and then put it in the serving tray. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! I left and called and canceled my order. I just ordered through grub hub, waited nearly two hours just to call, get interrupted and was told my food has been ready HOURS AGO!! I should have been notified my food was done and ready or at least gotten a check up call. This place has good food but is horribly managed. I’m so surprised more people don’t get sick from this food. Awful awful awful! DONT EAT HERE!

This is where I place my happy order. It's just really good sushi... In Cottage Grove! The fancy rolls are excellent, but it's the standard salmon sushi that gets me every time. If my wallet allowed I would order here every day of the week.

Amazing food! We love sushi, but we actually got the poké bowl instead, and it was fantastic. We will definitely be returning.

UPDATE:
Came again and food is still great, but I'm taking off a star for a couple reasons.

First, they removed a lot of their seating, so there isn't much space to eat in anymore.

Second, we came during their 8-8:30pm happy hour to get 10% off an online order, but they do not accept gift cards. We have gift cards that we wanted to use, but they they said that they cannot give a 10% discount during the happy hour on in-store orders, nor can they accept their own gift cards online. I do not know what kind of technology they are using, but it is annoying that I cannot use a gift card for their store to make an order online nor can they give 10% discounts in the store on their computer.

Ordered on line and it said it would be ready in 30minutes (sesame chicken and 2 sushi rolls). I got there in 15 minutes and food was already on the counter (if waited full 30min would have been very cold). 1 employee was sitting at the counter watching tv and eating other employee on phone. Waited till employee got off phone and he pointed at my order sitting on counter.
Sesame chicken sauce tasted like ketchup and only had small pieces of chicken nothing else(everywhere I’ve ever ordered it there is broccoli in it and a side of rice) it tasted like it was from the freezer section of the grocery store and sushi rolls which were tiny, looked and tasted like they used a creamed canned veggie sauce as filling. In a word it was gross!!
Nasty and expensive certainly would not go back and do not recommend it….

Dined in at the restaurant yesterday (I usually order for pickup online and that always goes very smoothly). The music was so calming and along with the decor and outside view, was just perfect to treat myself to their AMAZING food!! Everything I order is always soooo good!! Even if you order for pickup or delivery the meal is still hot.
I love the gyoza, thai tea with tapioca, and their sushi rolls, poke bowls, the fried chicken, different noodle entrees. And I still have more to try!

I ordered the singanoodle, spicy tuna roll, and tuna poke bowl via doordash. I eat a lot of sushi and Thai food and to be honest this was the worst. I'm not sure what was on the poke bowl but it tasted like yum yum sauce, which tastes like yuk yuk! The singanoodle was about as good as my child making chicken Ramen noodle and adding shrimp, and there was no egg. The spicy tuna roll was the equivalent of cub foods sushi after it sat for 6hrs in the cooler display. Needless to say I won't be going back.

Great Food! Disappointing service... I eat here often and don't usually have an issue. This time I never received a notification that my food was done, and upon further inspection noticed my food had been ready and sitting on the counter for over 45 minutes. I asked them to please remake it so it will be warm and safe to eat. I was not expecting anything but the food remade. Instead of making fresh food I witnessed him put the old food back into the fryer and refry it, resulting in extremely over done food and still unsafe for consumption. After I confronted him about this, he lied and tried to say he didn't and they were new, then continued to try to convince me the food was safe either way. I had to explain over and over again why this was not ok as he refused to remake it or refund me. In the end he rudely made me check over my new order before I could leave. The food was great as usual, but this experience is off putting and employees should never lie to their customers.

As a former restaraunt manager, I would never eat here. Before entering cafe, the outdoor trash can was over flowing. Upon entry, where there should be seating was a make shift apartment living situation. A mix of youth toys, pallets of food, a couch and that's all I needed to see. I would hate to see the cleanliness of the back house. Immediately turned around and walked out.

Don't get the egg rolls. Everything else was fine. They don't even look like regular egg rolls but I tried one to give it the benefit of the doubt and it was kinda soggy so I didn't have the other one. Then about 12 hrs later I have bad abdomen cramps and diarrhea. Pretty sure that's what it was I haven't had anything else to eat that I haven't had before since then.
Edit: told my friend that I got it with and she said her pad Tai was bad too, so moving it down to 2 stars bc only the sushi was good and won tons. (The sushi I got didn't have any raw fish in it FYI)

Really great poke bowl and miso soup from a local family run restaurant (I think I heard some kids in back!) Ingredients were fresh and sauces were delicious. They are set up for delivery and take out. Great sushi spot for southeast metro.

My fiancee and I have been coming here for a few years now about once per month and they are a wonderful sushi shop that is reasonably prices. But the our last 2 visits the food has been lack luster. The cream cheese rangoo was bitter and sour with a different wrap, the gyoza seemed to be less than normal meat and more vegetables, and the sushi seemed to be a little slimy. It seems like they are cutting costs at the moment which I can understand during the pandemic but it has made us think twice about going here.

I bought the poke bowl which came with a delicious salad and soup. They were very understanding when I mentioned I couldn't have mayo and remade my order for me at no additional cost. Very nice local business and it is great to have sushi prepared by a proper chef to order. It is very close to my Chiropractic clinic and they won me over with their generosity. I will certainly be recommending them!

Excellent with the flavors and presentation of sushi and appetizers. My favorite is the spicy yellowtail jalapeño sashimi appetizer. The egg rolls are also on point!!!!

Unfortunately Chinese dishes didn't fare as well with flavor-- bland. Ordered Singapore Noodles which tasted like plain fried noodles with no seasoning. I'll give it another shot though, twice may be the charm.

Excellent selection, tasty food, and timely service. I haven't seen a sushi and hibachi place this small before. It's easy to spend a lot because the food is all good, so I tend to get a hibachi dish and 1 or 2 rolls.

Strawberry Mill Tea- tatse like bubble gum medicine.
Chicken burrito- Barley any chicken but the veggies and other stuff was good, don't mind getting again.
Calamari- love the squid but not the bater.
Rock N Roll- it was good, order by mistake but didn't disappoint me, just a tad sweet.

We were looking for a new place for take out and sushi Cafe was just fantastic! Our order was spot on and they even included yummy sauce and sides. We love sushi and very particular when it comes to sushi. Sushi was fresh( great quality) so yummy. My fiance had orange chicken, had fresh orange rines. Salmon rice bowl was my favorite with fresh chunks of mango and great mix for the taste buds. They also have bubble tea! Pleasantly surprised, thanks Sushi Cafe! 🍣

So last night was like the third time we’ve/I’ve been there usually I pick it up but this time my wife was out running around so she just said she’d stop and grab it for me”Perfect”. Well when she got home she said how rude the people were there and on the phone, I said that’s funny because they were that same way to me when I ordered both other time also. Food was your average sushi is what I get, however the people there are not friendly and super rude and unwilling to help you over the phone if you don’t know what you want when you call because your driving or something like that, had a good idea of what I wanted and described it but she still had a bad attitude about offering the few sushi rolls that have cream cheese in them.

The sushi was pretty good, but the other dishes we got were pretty 'meh'. The food portions were small and there are little to no veggies with dishes that say they come with veggies. I think we got the sesame chicken and it had like 3 small broccoli trees in it.... basically nothing. Since my spouse doesn't like sushi and didn't like the other food, I guess it'll just be me going here by myself.

I love love sushi but am extremely picky and have waaay too high of standards for living in the Midwest for raw fish 😂 and for it to be as fantastic as it was being out of a to-go box non the less, is just straight up impressive!!! Definitely giving my usual sushi place (of 10 years) a run for their money! Absolutely will be ordering again and can’t wait to eat/visit in person! Keep up the amazing quality and prompt service, it definitely didn’t go unnoticed!

We ordered 2 sushi rolls, chicken wings and 2 Boba tea. The dragon roll was pretty sad, absolutely no meat just a trace of the dark sauce. Chicken was odd, its like a cross between Asian and American flavor it wasn't bad tho. They never seem to have enough boba for their Boba tea and have to result to the mango flavored pearls. Its not bad for Cottage Grove but I'll drive the extra 10 minute else where.

Got takeout from here a week ago and they finished cooking our food quick ! The Boba tea and the sushi we got were all super good !! They even gave us some cream cheese wontons for free, and they were awesome. Definitely gonna come here again soon

Everything I have tried on the menu has been fantastic!!! The best fried rice, the yum yum sauce is delicious and the pad thai is to die for. If you haven’t been to Sushi Café yet, you are missing out! The owners will make your dining experience worth coming back time and time again!

Really disappointing:( I wanted to give them another chance, but the rice was completely over done in my veggie fried rice. There was also only a very small amount of wilted vegetables on top, which was not quite what I expected. Sushi was good though!

All I can say is this has got to be the slowest establishment I have ever been to the family is rude to the food delivery services I have yet to go to this establishment and receive my food less than 20 minutes after the time it should be ready it doesn't matter if it's one item or 10 items. I don't eat sushi so I couldn't tell you about the quality of their food but I can tell you that I have had multiple customers upset that at the delay and time and of course I get upset in the delay of time because I'm not getting paid to sit there for 20 minutes to a half an hour after the time I'm supposed to pick up the food these orders are made in advance and the owners have no regards for anyone there never in a rush they literally are working at a snail's pace never smile I hope those who eat this food and who go to this establishment are enjoying amazing Sushi because 4 the general attitude of the family that runs this establishment if I was going out to eat or ordering food I most certainly would not order it from here

Since they opened, I have never been disappointed. They have a very wide drink menu, with different drinks and flavors. Their prices are a little high for a drink but is very tasty! Workers are always welcoming and quick! Highly recommend!!!

The food and the staff here are amazing! I came in at the very end of them closing and they were still willing to serve me and make me some amazing sushi. It was so fresh and so well made! What a surprise!! This place is amazing. I didnt think a tiny sushi place out in the suburbs can serve up such delicious food. Boy, was I wrong. We came once before but was turned away because of the price. But after reading constant positive reviews from a local FB page, I had to try. I ordered the salmon poke bowl with greens. It came with miso soup and side salad. The ginger dressing for the salad was awesome; it was the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and subtle spice. The poke bowl was the best part, generous portions of meat. I was afraid the bowl was going to be 80% greens, which is how other places do it because they're stingy cheap. The fish tasted great and the toppings were great. I would love to go back. The CA roll was good too.

Really good sushi, lovely service, and we didn't wait long for our food. They also have a deal where if you buy three fancy rolls together it's only like 30 bucks. Made them an origami crane. They have a little box with little cats in it. 10/10 would eat there again.

Fast and friendly service.

The food is good. They have much more than just sushi. Had the pad thai, eel sushi, and tuna roll. My mom had the lo mein. We split the eggrolls.

The roll was smallish, but good. The sushi pieces were decent sized. The pad thai was good. Mom said she really liked the lo mein. The highlight of the meal was to egg rolls. Vietnamese style. The fish oil was great and added the right stuff to really bring out the flavor. They were nice and crispy too.

Will definatly go back.

What a wonderful addition to the Cottage Grove area! Excellent, healthy food, great service, and fun atmosphere. Some of the prices seem steep, but the amounts of food are huge and easily stretch for two meals. Plus they have amazing bubble tea, with real tapioca! My new favorite restaurant! ❤️ *This is an addendum from a later visit* While I still love this restaurant, I was so disappointed today! I have ordered vegetable fried rice in the past. It was chock full of vegetables, and amazing! Today I ordered chicken fried rice, for a more complete meal. Today I ordered chicken fried rice, which had the EXACT same description: "With egg, onions, green onions, carrots.", except that chicken was also added. So I was very surprised, and not in a good way, to discover that there was not a single vegetable in the entire dish! No onion, green onion, or carrots, or any other vegetable. I'm sure that some people love it like this, but as a consumer I expected it to be the same, but with chicken, or at least to have the vegetables in it that the menu said it had.

Sorry for poor review. I was expecting great food from a local spot in Cottage Grove. 5 shrimp laying over sauteed soy sauce sushi rice is no good. I tried to get variety of things off menu. Singapore noodles I asked for it to be spicy not even close, chicken wings that were so small and has some type of seasoning dusted on there at the last minute, egg rolls wasn't bad but two eggroll cut in half for 7 bucks and a Philly roll which we'll just no smoked salmon just salmon and cream cheese. Paid over 40.00 for food that would had came in one dinner combination container from any dive Chinese spot.

The sushi is good, but a bit different than other sushi restaurants due to a thin sweet sauce. Although this isn't to my taste, it didn't detract much from the sushi, and I anticipate that many people would like it. The accompanying wasabi paste is actually wasabi rather than than the mustard/horseradish mixture that so many other sushi restaurants use, which is a big plus as far as I am concerned! The Singapore noodles seem to be flavored with a dry-spice mixture rather than a pre-mixed sauce. The deep-fried egg rolls are large and delicious! You order and pay at the cash register, then take a table (if you are eating in). Although there aren't a lot of tables, it didn't seem to be a problem since much of their business seemed to be "to go" when we were there. The atmosphere is cute with an imitation "living wall" that is decorated with faux flowers and greenery. Prices are reasonable, and the menu variety is awesome. We will definitely return!

Staff is amazing. The bubble tea selection is awesome. The Tapioca sells out, so consider planning ahead if you want some of that greatness. The food is great. Sushi is made in front of you at the little bar seating area. Would recommend to any and all.

All the meats tasted overdue, and we wanted to like this place, but the sushi rolls taste like they werent made fresh. We threw everything out. I tried this place three times, overall it’s decent, I wouldn’t say the best. For a small town such as Cottage Grove it does provide variety. It has that young hang out vibe and a low key environment.
