My boyfriend was served ice tea in a dirty mug, it had a faint taste of coffee. The food was ok.

Update: I have ordered from Oppa several times since my first review. It's one of my new favorite places. Today was the very first time I died in. The service was amazing! The food tasted even better do presentation and not being take out, and the atmosphere has a chill vibe that I love! The homemade dumplings were delicious, and the sushi bento box was amazing. You've seriously got to check this place out!

Original review: Their sushi is amazing! I do think some of their menu items are priced just slightly too high, but it's competitive with every other sushi place in Grand Rapids. The first time I ever went, I accidentally ordered way too much, not knowing how big their rolls were, but none of it went to waste. As a matter of fact, I went back for lunch just days later. This is definitely going to be a regular spot for me!

We are glad to have found this place. We travel A LOT! We can tell that they have the best tempura that we’ve tasted so far. Their rolls are enjoyable too! Their prices are very reasonable. I could say that their foods are authentic Korean foods. I already reviewed this restaurant 5 stars right after we left. But I tapped the submit accidentally and couldn’t edit. But this restaurant deserves more 5 stars. They don’t check a lot which I appreciate because I was able to enjoy their good foods. But you could tell that they have a very good customer service. We would definitely come back here! And we highly recommend this restaurant.

Just ate here for the first time. Can’t speak to all of their food but ordered the bibimbap burrito and was very disappointed with the lack of bulgogi. The burrito was 90% rice with a little mushroom and corn with maybe a tablespoon of beef. I had to double check to menu to verify what I had ordered was supposed to have beef. In the picture you will see what I mean, the brown parts showing are just mushroom. Charge a little more if you have to but don’t try to pass this off as a bulgogi burrito.

Lovely, family-owned restaurant. Its main business is sushi, but there is a small Korean menu as well.

If you're going there for sushi/Japanese flavors, I would highly recommend the bento boxes, oppa roll, tuna poke appetizer and high roller roll.

If you're going there for Korean flavors, I really enjoy their spicy pork bulgogi, champong spicy seafood noodle and soondubu soup. As their main business is sushi, they don't serve side dishes with their Korean dishes, but they do sell kimchi as a side dish.

Love this family-owned restaurant and the food here always feels like homemade!

REPLY to OWNER: I understand that tips are split between all servers but, in my time there you only waited on one table while he waited on five if he is in training and not knowledgeable about the menu you should be training him.. going table to table with him to answer questions the customer may have. You say he doesn’t know the “service” but, I saw as he was very attentive to his tables while you as you say were in charge of other duties. I was not planning on returning as I had already mentioned. I don’t spread miss information I am leaving my review of your restaurant based of my experience which seems others have shared about as well. Best Wishes to you and your business good service will bring customers back more than good food.

I was very disappointed with the customer service provided by the owners daughter. She was not my server but, she is in charge of passing out and picking up checks. I observed as a very kind gentleman who was my server waited on me and all 4 tables around me while the owners daughter bossed him around to do this and that. I noticed she would rush to pick up the checks that had been paid for so I decided to pay in cash and handed my server his tip and told him it was for him. To which he responded with “thank you very much, but we share all of it” I understand it is each business decision how tips will be distributed but, I don’t think it’s fair for one person to do all the work and provide excellent service while the other does not do her part. I was upset by this as I tipped my server very well for his work and attentiveness but, as a first time customer I will not be back and do not recommend this place to any one due to the customer service provided by the owners daughter.

I’ve been an ongoing customer at Oppa Sushi from their old location to the new one. I have always had an awesome experience when dinning there. The family who own and operate (The Kims)have always been so kind to me as well as anyone I am with. I have brought friends and family here with little to no experience of Korean food, the Kim’s are always willing to explain and give suggestions of their menu. On top of their kindness the food is amazing. The Oppa roll is top notch and I would suggest that to anyone who is just starting to try sushi. The Crab Ragoons are some of the best I’ve had. I suggest this restaurant to anyone wanting/looking for a Korean restaurant and sushi spot.

Had a very disappointing encounter with the staff.

As we were leaving, our server exited the building with us and let us know we were welcomed to get take out but banned from ever dining in again due to the fact that we did not tip (was a card transaction). Mind you, the tip was left in CASH and left visibly on the table.

Saying something along the lines of “this is how we pay our staff and it’s something said to everyone”.

After letting her know that a tip WAS IN FACT left. It was brushed off and we were told “oh, then you guys are good”. Never apologized and went back inside.

Honestly, my friend and I were shocked. For one, they didn’t even confirm with the table before deciding to “ban” us. Secondly, a tip is NOT mandatory and supporting customers should not be punished for not doing so.

I’m an extremely understanding person who values people’s hard work, so I ALWAYS leave a tip.

This encounter has been extremely disappointing as this place was one of my favorite spots to eat sushi/korean food. Food is 10/10. I recommended it to anyone who showed interest.
I am genuinely surprised by this entire thing and don’t think I will ever feel comfortable enough to return.

Oppa is a great place to go for authentic Korean food. I took my dad for his birthday, and he was in Korea for 2 years. My dad said that Oppa's bulgogi was only 2nd to another restaurant, which closed down, in comparison to what he received in Korea. The workers were patient and kind with our first time in the restaurant. Our server answered any questions with joy and happiness. I personally had the Bulgogi Kimchi Burrito, and it was amazing. I ordered spicy ramen and it said comes with egg, but it was not a whole egg, and it was very small amount. Also you can tell it is an instant ramen lol. And there is no rice or good veggies come with it. So I am not sure if it is worth paying $10 for it.
But bibimbap was good, except the miso soup came with it was not appropriately made. It was very apparent that was made very thick. Needs normal soap bowl than tiny cup.

Oppa Sushi and Korean has plenty of sushi options. But with Grand Rapids having limited Korean food options I will leave the review for this. The Champong(Spicy Seafood soupu) and Soondubu(Spicy tofu soup) was particular good. The spicy broth was superb. Spicy but not too salty which I like. Also had the hot stone bibimbap. This is the mixed rice bowl they cook in hot stone with red bean paste gochujang. Mixed vegetables with bulgogi and egg on top. Hopefully they add more Korean dish options. The new location is bigger than there previous location. And the food has improved too.

Nice place, well-kept and clean, and the service was good. The servers were great with our kids, and the vibe all around was positive and relaxed. If you've ever had Georgia Coffee (popular coffee brand in the indo-pacific) or Kopiko coffee candies, the "Korean Coffee" they make and serve hits the spot, and when I took my first sip, all I could do is smile and remember sipping Georgia Coffee's while in Okinawa.

I went for the Bibimbap, it tasted great, and all the ingredients were good. One thing that was a little bit of a bummer is that it didn't come with a raw egg cracked on top in a broiling hot stone bowl as previous variations of bibimbap I've had were served, but please don't let that stop you from trying it, it still hits the spot. The sushi and tempura were good, and the bento box was plenty for 1. The sushi line had room for 6 and the rolls were well made.

Overall, between the food, the service, and the general feel of it, I'd 100% recommend trying it out. It's located next to Q'Doba and Painting with a Twist and shares a parking lot. They also have a small room for reservations that looks great for small business lunches, meetings, or small gatherings.

Why is Oppa not updating anyone on their business progress? We have been following their Google page since they announced they were changing locations however they have not updated anyone on Google since end of January and said they wouldn't be opening on February 2st as previously promised... but then. They haven't updated anyone since end of January. Now they are lashing out at the other Google reviewers just wondering why they haven't given any of their customers any updates. Why so hostile? Why no updates then lashing out at innocent patrons just asking for an update after no updates for over 6 weeks. Why are we being bashed for just asking these people for an update with a date for reopen? This is why Oppa won't have any business because they were bad either their transition and then rude to people who helped them be as successful as they once were. They owe that customer below a sincere apology. Just my 2 cents.

Just a little hole in the wall in a strip shopping mall, sometimes these places can be a pleasant surprise. Not this time.

I had the beef bulgogi entree. Most Korean places would serve this with a variety of side dishes. None of that here, just some sticky rice and a big plate of bulgogi, which was so so.

Service was a little bit slow. I think they had some family in town and they were kind of busy with them.

Sweet chili shrimp was super good and flavorful. The beef is alright but it’s shaved beef and not regular beef pieces. Service was sub-par and lady seemed to have a tude/annoyance to her. I definitely enjoy service slightly over flavor so not sure if I’d come back soon but the flavors are there.

Edit: will never come back here again. Lady at the front counter is terribly rude (still) and has some sort of racial bias. She was outside talking with her friend while a line was waiting inside. When asked she just points and leaves. Never says have a good day or anything. Do NOT come here if you want mediocre food and racist people who refuse to serve you. Hopefully this family owned business goes out of business because they don’t deserve any sort of service with their bias in place and you can get better/higher quality sushi elsewhere.

Review №105

I was super excited to try OPPA for the first time! Unfortunately, I was quickly disappointed.

Customer Service was HORRIBLE: The gentleman that came to the table 1st barely greeted us and kind of just stood there awkwardly. He was unable to answer my question about the difference between a couple options. Next, a burly, husky, younger woman came to the table to get the order, but I still had the same question which she rudely gave a response to, but it was not relevant to my question. I just assumed a language barrier- which I figured out was not the case when I saw her laughing and chit-chatting with other customers. When she brought 2 waters in hard plastic cups, I requested 2 straws since none were provided. The server woman was rude, used short responses, and her body language spoke volumes. Needless to say she did not return with a straw, instead, she greeted others who came in after us and helped the group of 3 that walked in right before us, getting their orders to them. I even rose my hand a couple times and was ignored, she didn’t even look in my direction, the place is so small that I know she saw me, but continued to ignore me. She proceeded to walk past my guest and I several times, seating others and laughing and talking with them. I only ordered a vegetable and chicken tempura, which took so long to bring out (about 30 minutes). I watched as every person who came in after me got serviced, their requests met, and their food before I did. I waited patiently, but almost got up to leave, and should have, but then the food came, so I stayed. The gentleman from the first interaction brought out the food, at which time I asked again for straws for our drinks- he brought me 1, so I had to ask for 1 more. I had only ate 2 rolls out of 10 and the woman server came by and set the check on the table, didn’t say anything. I was wanting to also try the ice cream mochi but was unable to request it since I had been ignored the whole 30 minutes I was waiting on my food, then being given a check as my food arrived at the table. This experience ruined any future visits for me. I will not return, not even for take out, I’ll pay another sushi place even if I have to pay more.

While I do not jump to assumptions of racisms and biases, this whole interaction made it feel that way. My guest and I were the only people of color- I am a mixed - black, indian, and white female and my guest was a black male; EVERY other person was caucasian, and the differences in service were clearly present. This Raises questions as to why we were treated so differently.

While I ALWAYS make it a point to take care of servers and other service industry personnel by tipping VERY well- over 20%, I didn’t leave any tip due to this experience.. It was apparent by their actions (lack of service, rude and short responses, and the mistreatment as a paying customer) that my guest and I were not welcomed in their establishment.

I am deeply disappointed since the food was very good for my first time trying sushi. Unfortunately, it’ll be the last experience for me at OPPA! I would’ve ended up being a regular to try other things if it was not for this horrible customer service experience. I will not recommend OPPA to anyone, especially to my friends of color.

The food came out faster than I’ve ever seen at a sushi restaurant. The quality was high and prices were fair. The Korean bul go go bento box was also delicious and came with a healthy portion of tempura shrimp and vegetables.

This is a family run business and they were super friendly. I also loved that before I even sat down (and while I was in the bathroom) they let my 7 year old daughter order $18 of sushi rolls independently.

Sushi is her favorite food and she says she wants them to close and relocate to Chicago (so she can be a repeat customer).

They only have a few Korean dishes but good enough. Other than that we liked their food. We ordered Bibimpap (Korean) and salmon poke (Hawaiian). Both were very good and quantity was just right. There was a Hispanic grocery next to the (San Jose) which i checked out. Glad i did. Picked up some chorizo which i will try grilling later.

Fantastic family-owned place. Very friendly and personable service. The food is and tastes incredibly fresh. The owner/chef told us everything is made fresh daily and you can tell. The hot and sweet shrimp sauce was clearly not from a can. I would order that appetizer every time! The meat and vegetables were so so tasty. I’ll stop here. Wish this place wasn’t 45 minutes from home but I’ll find sn excuse to go periodically anyway.

Excellent across the board. Attentive friendly staff, amazing delicious dishes at reasonable prices, and adorable decor throughout. They have food for those who don't enjoy spice up to foods that will make a grown white man cry, and everything in between. A staple for Sushi and Korean on this end of town.

I've gone here a few times over the past year and to be honest it's pretty underwhelming sushi. Out of the several sushi places I've gone to this is probably at the bottom of the list. Not impressed by the plating, taste, or quality of the food for the price you pay.

Mind = blown away. The sushi and the entree were out of this world. You can tell they have quality ingredients. The only thing I would suggest is to work on the quality of service. Our waiter was great and tentative, just maybe would like a little bit more quality of service to make it feel more up scale. Great environment though. I bet if this place opened a stand alone they would dominate the space here in WM.

Came here because maru sushi on bridge was closed. Had the Nabeyaki Udon ramen. It wasn't as good as maru, but I can't complain as it was cheaper. Staff were all really friendly!

The food is good and Mr. Kim is very thoughtful when servings his customers.

The reason why I gave a 2 starts is because of the customer service that I experienced today. It appears that his daughter is now the server, when we walked in she immediately treated us different than the others. 1) she wouldn’t allow for us to seat at a 4 people table even though I had a big bag and the table for two was so small, when asking she stated that we had to sit there that it’s kitchen rules, but a white couple came after us and she tells them “to sit themselves”. She offered them something to drink, not us. 2) Every time we had contact she would drop something on the table and my partner would say thank you and she ignored him, but when the couple next to us would say it she would respond to them and even make conversation. 3) she gave us the check right away and when we paid and she retuned the card my partner again said thank you but she ignored him.

First time I didn’t provide someone with a tip. Keep in mind that when oppa first opened I would only order to go and I would still leave Mr. Kim a tip and even purposely continued to go in 2020 to support his small business.

The steamed dumplings are wonderful as is the signature Oppa roll. We also tried the drunken tiger roll, absolutely delicious! The double crunch roll was good also.

Whata delightful hopping discovery! We were pleasantly surprised with the seating accommodations when we entered the small store front. Excellent chef and superb server. The Teppanyaki we chose was loaded with vegetable in a delectable sauce. I added shrimp to my dish and my guy added tofu. The refreshing avocado cucumber roll we shared we topped with fresh ginger and a bit of wasabi. We also enjoyed a richly mouthwatering sweet potato tempura together. A wonderful experience to conclude our date day!

This this is absolutely an adorable little corner sushi shop. The owners are extraordinarily nice and humble, in the staff is very friendly and outgoing.

The food was absolutely amazing from the selection of things that I had while there. It's definitely a go-to for any sushi lover.

The environment is full of adorable cartoon wall mounted paintings of cats and sushi, they even have a wall full of sticky notes from previous customers with drawings and friendly remarks on them.

Without a doubt if you're craving sushi and or near Alpine, this should be your number one go to.

Our plates were arranged beautifully and the ingredients were fresh. The crab ragoons are the best I've had in recent memory. My order of calamari was overcooked to the point of the breading tasting almost burnt.

Wait staff are kind and overall seemed happy to be there.

The location is small and was a bit loud when full. They could definitely do with some sound dampening foam or just more wall decor to break up the echo.

Overall a great place. I'd recommend coming here for lunch as the service is very fast.

Not too worthy to visit. Very busy by one server. When I tried to order Champong, they said 45 to 50 minutes for that. So I ate a spicy ramen instead with spicy tuna roll. Sushi was not authentic and looks like just food truck stuff. I don’t think I will re-visit here for long.

Absolutely awful service. The owners daughter was so rude and disrespectful. On top of the food being disgusting. I didn't enjoy the bulgolgi. Tasted like pure ginger. Just meat and watery soup. Miso soup was gross as well. Not sure how you can mess that up.

Review №187

Completely underwhelming. Starting with the decor: newer restaurant, they have some nice fun artwork on the walls, nice TV showing their stuff off, then they have stuff scotch taped to the wall, they have poorly painted half wall of chalkboard paint. The server was a nice young man, didn't really seem happy to be there or have a lot of experience, never saw him smile once. Finally the food, vegetarian options looked good, however the tofu appetizer was not great, salad was okay. Sushi rolls were nothing special, I have had better/less expensive rolls elsewhere. Had a hair on one of the pieces. Some of the pieces easily fell apart. The worst part was the tempura batter for the veggie roll tasted like fish, obviously using the same batter bowl for everything. I will not be returning any time soon

We came earlier today to have their jjamppong and bulgogi and their bulgogi was mostly meat barely any vegetables, which was very disappointing. The portion of meat was generous, but it was also on the salty side. The miso soup was served in a very small bowl too. The jjamppong was okay, the taste is not the same.Their food used to be very delicious and now it’s just about average. Also, our waiter was kinda clueless and took a little longer to come back with our drink and taking orders. They also don’t provide banchan and it just feels not truly the Korean way. This experience was very disappointing.
