A chef driven restaurant serving Eastown Grand Rapids thoughtfully prepared sushi, grilled food and beverages. Available for dine in, takeout and delivery.
This restaurant is one of my favorites for their Crab Rangoon Dip—it’s absolutely delicious! Their sushi is also impressive, with a wide variety of rolls to choose from, and the sashimi is fresh and of great quality.
However, I was disappointed by a couple of aspects of my visit. They don’t offer fountain drinks, which was a bit inconvenient. Additionally, the indoor temperature was uncomfortably cold. I dined in on a Tuesday afternoon in December, and it was so chilly inside that I opted to sit on the patio with the heaters. Unfortunately, the heaters were turned off midway through the meal, making it difficult to fully enjoy the experience.
On the positive side, the service was solid. Our waitress was friendly and helpful, providing great suggestions from the menu.
Overall, while the food and service were good, the dining environment could use some improvement to make it more comfortable for guests, especially during colder months.

TLDR: I haven’t been here in years and honestly I don’t know why! Great sushi, lovely drinks, nice atmosphere and great service ❤️
We started out with a dragon fruit collins
(vodka, dragon fruit, lime, soda) which was very tasty and not too sweet, along with a hot herbal tea… that I didn’t like at all 😬😫. I asked if I could order a green tea and the server was so kind, that without us asking for it, (I figured we’d pay for both) she took the first tea off the bill! 🤩
I had a miso soup, which was exactly as expected, but for some reason I really liked the presentation- it looked pretty to me so I snapped more pics than usual 🤪.
It’s been almost 2 months since the actual visit (I’m trying to catch up on reviews… oopsie) so I’m not 100% sure what the names of all the rolls were, but I can tell you we enjoyed them all!
What I THINK we ordered:
nirvana
tempura smoked salmon, crab salad, avocado, cream cheese, eel sauce, honey wasabi aioli, masago, scallion
crouching tiger
panko fried shrimp, cream cheese, crab salad, shrimp, avocado, fantasy sauce, eel sauce, honey wasabi aioli, masago, scallion
Spicy Tuna Roll
spicy tuna, cucumber, scallion, pickled peppers
Overall we really enjoyed our meal here and plan to return again soon.
UPDATE: so apparently I had gone to two Maru sushi’s and accidentally left a review for the one on bridge as this one… so all the last photos are from a place that is no more- however, my update is on the correct restaurant 😅 oooops
When we visited, it was raining hard, not that had outdoor seating covered by an awning, and it was still warm as it was the end of summer, so we enjoyed sitting there.
Drink specials were the dragonfruit collins and the tropical?? Mule (I forgot the actual name of it but it had mango in it and was delicious).
We got miso soup and an assortment of sushi rolls. All of it was amazing, as expected.

Incredible sushi. I've been on a nigiri kick as you can see below. I have tried salmon, albacore, bluefin, eel, shrimp and scallop nigiri. My favorite is the salmon, scallop and eel; perfect texture. I would say my favorite of all is the eel since they flavor it up so well. Service is excellent. The food takes a little bit longer to come out but they make it fresh! It's worth the wait. Service is great. Ambiance is incredible. I love this place, it's my favorite sushi restaurant in Grand Rapids.
Free parking street or parking lot parking is available.
I bring my son here all the time so it is kid friendly! Also a perfect place for a date.

Last night we enjoyed Maru with a group of 8 for a birthday dinner. We ordered 12 rolls (1 absolutely amazing Chef Special). I can not say enough about the culinary staff. The rolls are the best we have ever had, anywhere! Keep up the great work! Grand Rapids is very fortunate to have you here. Tip the Chef’s! The tips for the servers are shared with bar staff and hostess. Chefs have to be directly tipped in the jar on their counter. It’s very important to understand this because they are absolutely key to this business! Well done!

Atmosphere was very nice, sushi is pricy for the portion size. One of my friends ordered a miso soup which came out within 5 min but the rest of the food (we ordered two rolls and a yaki udon) which took another 50 minutes to come out. We almost left but the food came just as we decided to go so we stayed. We would've ordered more since the portion size is small but figured the wait time was not worth it. Also kind of felt like our waitress forgot about us 😅

Great American style sushi, they've even got one with bacon!
Their Nigiri is top notch for somewhere this inland.
Overall everything is great. If you've got someone you want to introduce to sushi this is the place to take them. They'll have something for veterans and newbies to enjoy.

The interior looks pretty close to authentic Asian cuisine. The service was subpar, the waitress came off as very snooty uptight, and judgmental. The food was very disappointing. I got the Teriyaki Glazed chicken with the fried rice and veggies. The veggies were raw, just felt warmed up and the fried rice was wet like it was made with fresh rice. Our waitress did have my carrots remade (I didn't ask for ) and they turned out perfect after that. My significant other got the Cosmo roll, the salmon sashimi, unagi (ebi and nigiri). The Salmon Sashimi some tasted ok, some tasted bad and she started feeling sick soon after. The Unagi was very fatty to the point of almost ruining it. Ebi was plain, my significant other is of japanese decent and it felt extremely plain to her. With food/service this bad, $80 would've been overpriced, but we sat at $113 before tip. Absolutely atrocious and ridiculous, will not recommend this establishment and will not go back. I do not understand how the ratings are this high.

We just visited there last night for our anniversary. Its been over a year since we were last there and its definitely gone downhill. The sushi rolls still tasted great and our waitress was nice and respectful but that's where it ends. We were seated at a table and were so packed in, the server at the neighboring table kept bumping into my wife while bringing food and drinks to them. We were given glasses of luke warm water after being seated. I had to ask for ice for the water to make it cold. Our menus were so old you could barely read the print in certain areas. They asked about a special occasion for the reservation and told them our anniversary yet nothing was said or done for it. Lastly, the food prices have gone up considerably. I understand inflation but definitely will be looking for other places now. Sad!

We found a tiny white/light yellow spider on our California roll. My 8 year old was eating it and he dropped his chopsticks and said, “ewww, there’s a bug!” I looked and a tiny spider was crawling on our food. Our server was busy attending to other customer so I quickly brought it up to the two chefs (two ladies-one with glasses and other with dark brown hair). They took the plate and told me to tell our server. As I was passing the plate to the chefs, I saw the spider hanging on its web on the bottom of the plate. They remade the two California rolls but we were just disgusted and we didn’t want to eat it anymore. The chefs were giggling and laughing about it. They leave the plate on their open shelves and I don’t think they wipe the plates before plating. NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE!
We went there at 2:30PM and we ordered from the quick lunch menu. We ordered the Cosmo roll and the server asked what kind of fish we want in there. We said tuna. I later got the bill and the price was higher than the lunch price. When we asked the server, she said it’s a normal price because we chose tuna. She never explained that to us when we were ordering it.

I don’t normally do reviews but this time I just felt it needed to be done. We have been going here for a long time and have always loved it but over the past 6-8 months things have declined. A couple months ago I went in by myself on my lunch and waited a really long time for my food. I thought, ok things happen so I’ll go back again. Last Sunday my husband and two kids (6,12) went in and I had told everyone not to eat before we went so that they would eat their food. We went in around 2:30 (so kind of an off hour) and there were about 6 tables of people. We ended up waiting over 45 minutes for three rolls and some fried rice. My husband and I had both had a drink and it was long gone by the time we got our food. The waitress knew it was off and kept coming back to our table to tell us our food would be 5 more minutes. (This was not true any of the times). We all started getting grumpy as we were starving. When are food finally did come I asked the waitress what was going on and she said she feels like they don’t staff the sushi line well enough. I told her that was an incredibly long time for a nearly empty restaurant to get food out. She just said sorry and went about her business. She was nice and I don’t blame her at all but I just feel like in cases like that they should at least offer a quick app or salad or something to hold people over if the wait is that long. We weren’t offered any discount or a free drink or anything. I also feel like the quantity and presentation of the food does not really match the prices. We love sushi and normally get a lot for what we pay for and there are always elaborate options if we want to get really fun with it.
Like I said, I have always loved Maru but Grand Rapids has a lot of options now for sushi so I think they should try and address this issue. $100 for lunch is quite expensive when you aren’t getting the service and food that should come along with that price tag.
Sadly, we will not be visiting this restaurant any longer. 😞

Food is good, atmosphere is good, but the service...not good. I had to wait 55 minutes for my food to come while I saw people who came after me get their food. Not a great experience. I don't know why it took them so long it wasn't busy at all and mostly family's of 2 or 3. So to sum it all up, 2/10 not impressed. I've had better sushi.

I absolutely LOVE this place! I usually go to the Bridge St. location, but I think the Cherry St. location is my new favorite.
Lots of natural light, and a sweet patio. The food was incredible. We got gyozas as an appetizer…I liked ‘em so much I got a 2nd order. The sushi rolls were fire too. 🔥
Lillian was our server and she absolutely crushed it! Me and my buddy don’t like to be difficult with our sushi orders, but we gotta have it how we want it, right? So we usually ask for a few substitutions on each of our rolls and it just cramps the experience when a server shows frustration or acts burdened by our requests. But Lillian kindly walked us through what would be possible, and was more than willing to ask the chef on our behalf. She also had some really good recommendations because she rolls sushi there as well. Kudos to her. She was upbeat and always had a smile on her face. We appreciated that. Not to mention…I always had a full water…BIG brownie points there. She deserves a shoutout for bringing immaculate vibes to our table and giving me an A+ experience for my first time at this location. 👌

Update 5-31: Yet another poor experience with a pick up here. Upon arrival the head sushi chef told the host 5 minutes and STILL didn't have the order 18m later. Or they will tell you it's not due until a certain time. Without realizing that the due time is printed on the receipt. As you can see in the photo the order was due at 1:25 and I didn't receive it until 1:40. It's like this restaurant lies on purpose to prevent the driver from dropping the order and making their restaurant from looking bad to the delivery services. The manager always says they will work on giving proper estimates and then it's always we a little behind. Say that up front then I can decide to go on to another order instead of now LOSING money on this delivery.
Starting to dread coming here for take out or as a delivery driver. The order is never ready when it's supposed to be. They will give you a completion time and that time won't be accurate either. And when you ask again the host staff are less than friendly telling you it will be ready when it's ready basically. It doesn't matter if you have other plans or are working hard to deliver for the restaurants. It's a shame as the food is quite good. Also drivers must be less important as a customer came for a take out order and the host invited him to have a seat at the bar and if he'd like something to drink. I got no such offer. Waited well over 30 minutes more than triple the time she told me it would be finished. Even my diner was getting annoyed with the wait and contacted me twice as they also had plans after dinner. And it's not the wait that's the most upsetting it's the fact that the staff don't care they are literally taking money out of my pocket. If you tell me ten minutes I'll wait patiently. If you tell me 30-40 I'll unassign the order and let another driver arrive close to the ready time. All in all I definitely prefer the Bridge Street location.

I love delicious food and great service and Maru has both!!
A big shout out to manager, Ronnie, and server, Lily. Both women go above and beyond in their service and that is why Maru on Cherry St is a favorite of ours.
We started our meal with their delicious crispy Asian salad. That dressing they serve on the side is amazing! Maru has wonderful speciality rolls and Crouching Tiger is our favorite! I tonight I had their Veggie Hibachi and I loved it. The vegetables and rice were so tasty and cooked perfectly. I never missed the meat and I love meat! And we finished our meal with crème brûlée and French pressed coffee. Perfect ending to a perfect meal! THANK YOU!!!

The food was good and the servers were friendly, but the restaurant was very slow, almost empty when we were seated and it took an hour and a half to get our food. I understand you need to have time if you’re going out to eat but, it kinda just felt like we were forgotten about since there were only 5 other small groups in the store. I would like to try their food again, but I guess Ill just make sure i have two and a half hours to spare.

Over good experience. This is my personal opinion. Not bashing this establishment. We ordered 4 rolls, and they were good and tastie, but a lot going on within the rolls with all the flavors they were trying to incorporate into one roll. Little over powering flavor combating each other. Their Carb Rangoon Dip is absolutely amazing and a must order for an appetizer. Onlrly problem no pop/soda from Coke Cola or Pepsi Products, a little weird. Those are the reasons I gave the food a 4 star. Our server was amazing and spot on with our questions and kept my water filled. The atmosphere was nice and clean. im sure during warmer months, the outside sitting is relaxing.

I think maybe, we will have to come back for a standard lunch or dinner to see if their not just a one trick pony.

It's a cute little place. I got the yaki udon with chicken, and it was delicious. Perfect size, not too small but not too much. They don't have soda, and I like to treat myself to a soda when I go out-- since I don't eat out often, so that was disappointing since most places serve some sort of soda-- but that didn't ruin my experience at all, just wanted to mention.

Food was great. Really it was the best! When we got there though it took 20 minutes to get a server. People that came in after us got served before us. There was apparently confusion on who had our table, according to our (eventual) server Shannon. But the ongoing delay was beyond what we saw from others being served.

I have ordered take out several times here, but tonight was the first time actually experiencing the restaurant atmosphere. Waitress and staff were very welcoming. Ordered the Crab Rangoon Dip to start, followed by the Sexy Bacon and Salmon Cosmo. A little pricer than other Sushi places, but worth their unique rolls and heavenly tastes. Will definitely revisit! 👍

Our waitress was a delight! Service was good and food came relatively in a decent time. Food...taste was not bad! As an asian...the prices on here were ridiculous for what you receive however. $24 for a sushi roll only to be half rolled in nori?!?! LOL it was ridiculously funny and stupid because...just why would you leave the bottom of a sushi roll exposed!!!!! Everything I picked up my sushi, it fell apart! It tasted good tho. The next part was that there was the skimpiest, tiniest thin layer of rice possible in my tables sushi. Like it was ridiculously thin where some parts of the $19 sushi didn't have any rice in patches around the sushi. For the prices, it was disappointing to see such unrefined sushi making skills. We didn't even get any dessert because there wasn't anything remotely Japanese on the dessert menu...laughable. overall, the drinks were okay and the sushi tasted good. The techniques used on the sushi were highly questionable, and the prices not worth what you get. Tried it once, but won't return. Not an authentic sushi place. Overpriced. But nice and clean interior and dining place! And excellent service.

I recently went to Maru on Cherry st and I cannot say enough amazing things! The sushi was very good and I love the selection of non alcoholic beverages. One thing that made my night was my amazing server, Molly! Not only was she an amazing server but, unfortunately, on my way to the restroom I tripped over my own feet and me and my belongings hit the floor. She immediately put down what was in her hands and helped pick me and some of my things up. I was so embarrassed but she made me laugh and feel better about it. Thank you, Molly! Had a delicious Nervana roll here, crab Rangoon dip and edamame.... after having a fleet of beer next door at Brewry Vivant. Highly recommend both. And hitting the small locally owned shops surrounding them on that block.

Our food was fantastic. On top of that we had an incredible server, Scott, who made our experience a 10/10.

Came here for dinner and it was great! Had the Gyoza and Edamame as appetizers, both were very good! Gyoza were probably best I have had. Then got spicy tuna roll and specialty roll. Both good.
Try the teas, they have several hot teas! Orange was interesting and good. Finish off with vanilla bean cheesecake.

Perfect place for date or small group dining. Quiet and elegant. The food was perfect. Good presentation. Exceptional taste. Professional service. I want to go back for another special occasion when I'm in Grand Rapids again. The location is near the GRR airport, in a quaint neighborhood with many attractions from food and drink to art.

Typical American style sushi place

Food is always great, the service has ups and downs as there is always new servers but that's not their fault. Dang millennials.

Really good sushi. It's my first time at this location and we all really enjoyed it.
Nice lunch combo for $21. A signature roll and a regular roll.
Note that they have water and alcohol and teas to drink.
No pop.
I got the crunchy shrimp and the crouching tiger.

Bri was an excellent waitress and the food was phenomenal. The Soy Joy is a delicious, filling roll with a great flavor profile. Would highly recommend.

Great service. Our meal for 4 was fabulous!

Overpriced and overrated. Waited over 30 min for food and two sushi rolls came out over $50.

Went here for lunch, the menu was very limited for lunch unfortunately so I'll have to go back some time for dinner, but I ordered the Soy Joy roll and some edamame and a spritzer and all of them were top notch quality. I can't wait to come back!

Came in for lunch after walking through the Fulton Street market and had a pleasurable experience. We ordered the Crab Rangoon Dip for an appetizer that was to die for. We also ordered the Crouching Tiger and Soy Joy specialty rolls that were extremely delicious. Would recommend to anyone who likes good sushi done right!

Some of the best sushi in West MI

I love the food at Maru but our experience today was terrible. I came as part of a group of 6 teenage girls and we waited over 1 hour and 15 minutes to get our food, and waited 20 minutes after being told it would be another 5-10 before we got our food. In addition to this, we also had to wait for 15 more minutes after getting our checks for the to-go order I placed at the same time as my regular order (I did let the waitress know that this could come out later, so this could be partially my fault). I love the food at Maru, but for the splurge, the wait was simply ridiculous. It seemed like we were not being prioritized due to our age and we were not taken seriously, despite us all purchasing full meals. The worst experience I have had at this restaurant.

Great waiter, atmosphere & my Papa Crema was divine. I will definitely be coming back here.

Usually a favorite, but the tofu served the udon noodles were inedible. A shame

Pretty mediocre (and very Americanized) over-priced sushi. I have only ordered take-out, but have done so several times and have tried more than 8 menu items. I don’t recommend the Yellowtail or much else from the nigiri and sashimi menu. But, this is the midwest so that is kind of expected. However, their tempura batter is great and they have some fun signature rolls.

You need to try The Avatar!

I stopped in for a quick roll and some saki on an early Saturday evening, sat at a table on their lovely patio and was impressed with the friendly service. I had the inari (rice in fried tofu pockets, very tasty but not on the menu for some reason), a ‘Soy Joy’ roll and a carafe of the cucumber saki. Everything was fantastic. I’ve eaten at several of their different locations many times and love the look and vibe of this particular restaurant. I’ll definitely be back!

Definitely a great sushi place to check out in grand rapids, very nice staff, pleasant environment.

Really great food and friendly staff, but super pricey regular menu. During lunchtime they have a limited menu with better deals so we like to go then. The lunch menu has all of our favorites (like the crab rangoon dip, avatar with salmon, crouching tiger)

I've been 4 times now and the sushi is always excellent with large rolls/portions for the price. The only downside is the service. It's consistently a little slow. Sometimes it's just noticeable and other times it's frustrating (waiting 20 min for a cocktail when we first arrived). Getting apps is fast. It just takes a while to get drinks.

Rude employees but great food

I had a rough experience at Maru a couple weeks ago. I'll start by saying that I tried to find a solution 1-1 by emailing management (opposed to writing a review), however, 3 weeks later and they have not responded to my email.
First the server rang in the wrong order, so I received the wrong meal. I was a server for years, I understand those mistakes happen, no problem. The correct dish comes, and after eating several bites, my fork pulls out a long dark hair from the middle of my pile of white sticky rice (pic attached).
The server said she told the manager about the issues, yet the manager never came to the table which surprised me. They comp'd the edamame app for the hassle and the 1st dish (the dish that I did not order) that was brought out to me. They did have me pay, however, for the hibachi with the hair. I kindly asked the server about it, and she said she can ask the manager, but she didn't know since the first meal (THE MEAL I DID NOT ORDER) was already comp'd. Am I wrong to think that the meal I did not order should not even be on the receipt to be comp'd, since... I didn't order it?
So I walked out hungry and having paid for a meal that had a chef's hair entwined in it.
The worst part, for me, is that I never got a response from an email I wrote to management about my experience. I can easily move past wrong orders and servers making mistakes, but the lack the care from management has been the most disappointing.

Every option I've had has been wonderful! Crouching tiger and the crab rangoon dip are to did for; the crab dip is crispy, fried "chips" with a seriously delicious crab dip + sweet/sour type sauce. More chips for this are free, so ask when you run out!

The only issue was the POS system went down and we were there forever. Took a while to get waters and menus.

Terrible experience. Gave it a second chance and was even more disappointed.
The house was 2/3 full and there looked to be plenty of staff. It still took WELL over an hour between ordering and receiving our food.
They look to be prioritizing take out, so don't plan on dining in unless you have 2+ hours that you aren't trying to get anywhere else.
Tempura rolls were way over cooked.
Wait staff apologized for the wait, but was in no hurry to help us get going when it was time to cash out.

Didn't have tuna or albacore. Or ice tea. Don't have pop. The quality of what we did get (cosmo) was just MEH especially for the price. This place is just has been now. Not sure what happened here but this place is mismanaged.

Maru is a lovely place. They have a lot of delicious rolls. I wish they offered more sashimi options, but if rolls are your jam, this is your place.

I came here with two friends to have a good meal and socialize. We shared the Crab Rangoon Dip and each tried a different sushi (I tried the Avatar Signature Roll with Yellow tail. It was delicious, especially the Thai sauce. Then we ended by splitting a Creme Brulee, which currently is lemon and lavender which was delicious!

I lost faith in sushi in Grand Rapids but this place has redeemed my faith and then some! You need to try the deep fried sweet potato!

We ordered firecracker shrimp and chef special sushi.
Both were pretty good. The service was good.
The chef special is customized and is based on your preference. So it might take awhile for the chef to make them. We waited about 40 mins for our sushi. It's worth the wait. But I would recommend ordering more appetizers and some not so complicated sushi if you are ordering the chef special.

The sushi is worth the wait. But the wait can sometimes be too long hence the 4/5 stars
