Tipper Beware!

The food is consistently great, and the chef was fantastic as always—I even gave him a cash tip at the grill. However, the overall experience fell short. The atmosphere was too quiet and dark, and the regular waitstaff left much to be desired. They rarely checked in for refills, took quite a while to bring the bill, and seemed to spend more time standing around than attending to guests.

On top of that, I noticed a rather questionable practice with the billing. For a party of two, they included a tip in the check without any prior mention. When they brought the receipt to sign, they labeled the total (including the tip) as the "pre-tip amount" and provided another line to add a tip. This could easily lead to double-tipping if you're not paying close attention.

The food is great, but this kind of billing practice and lackluster service are worth noting.

Ichiban gave us a fantastic hibachi experience! The food was absolutely delicious, with perfectly cooked steak, buttery shrimp, and flavorful fried rice and teriyaki noodles. The hibachi chef was incredibly entertaining, keeping us laughing with fun tricks and fiery displays. Portions were generous, and we appreciated the relaxed atmosphere—they didn’t rush us and let us enjoy our meal. On the dinner side, the restaurant has cozy booths with beaded curtains, adding a touch of privacy and romance. A perfect spot for an impromptu date night.

If I could give this place a 0 I would. The food was amazing but the server was horrible, rude, unprofessional and lacked customer service …I believe her name is Aminda or something similar. I came here on 1/4/25 around 6p to celebrate getting my masters in nursing, I was greeted with an attitude and rushed to eat. I asked was I being rushed and she said yes. Worse customer service I have ever experienced and mad I spent my money! Ann Arbor ichiban would never treat customers like this ! Y’all should be ashamed

We went there for my cousins birthday dinner, his choice. The waitresses and hostesses are rude, not welcoming ordered an appetizer never got. I ordered filet migeon and scallops hibachi dinner. All the seafood was VERY FISHY. I didn't eat the shrimp way to FISHY. Within 20 min of eating my stomach started grumbling,rumbling cramping up. Spent half the night in the bathroom with diarrhea and gas.
And yes the gratuity is already in your bill. Yes we paid the gratuity plus 25%.
Bathrooms are disgusting, old . I can't believe this place is in canton. Health department needs to stop by... gross. Will not be back.

The Hibachi setting is cool and all but the service and food was OK at best. Literally watched the cook put nothing but butter on the meat to cook. No seasoning AT ALL. He Literally seasoned the fried rice but not the meat? It was just blan. We sat there for 30 min after eating just waiting for someone to come and give us a box for leftovers and the bill. All of this on my birthday dinner I might add. Definitely will be my last time here, I could have made better food at home

Number 1...If you go into a restaurant and it's dirty, dark, dingy, your shoes stick to the floor and smells odd..just think about what the kitchen looks like! Went there Saturday night for a birthday party, 16 of us ordered dinner, the chef came out and prepared 8 dinners on his grill, finished and left. 10 minutes later, another chef came out and prepared the remaining dinners..WHAT! They watched us eat and we watched them eat! My biggest complaint about this place was the bill!! I was paying for my family, so I got by bill and gave the waitress my credit card, she returned with the credit slip stapled on top of the receipt and a second credit card receipt for me. I truly believe the credit card receipt was stapled to the itemized bill so I wouldn't notice that they ADDED 18% TIP on my bill without telling me!! Everyone that paid that night did the same thing I did, I added 20% for a tip on top of the 18% they snuck in there. We all realized it after the fact, and reading other reviews, it looks like it happens a lot there. Probably shood be investigated! STAY CLEAR of this place!!

The wait/servers were not welcoming. In addition they served the Hibachi soup and salad immediately without asking what we intended to order. Then removed the soup and salad from my son when she realized he was not ordering Hibachi dinner and chose a different selection on the menu. He wasn't eating it anyway - but I feel that is bad customer service.
However, the very friendly and entertaining Hibachi Chef turned the experience around and made it a good one. Food is average to good. I ordered the Hibachi Steak dinner, and my son then ordered a side steak on the Hibachi. I was happy to pay the chef a cash tip.
It's also worth mentioning that when we were billed a 20% gratuity was automatically added and included with the meal charges.

I think I’ll start dinning at another location after two poor experiences with the same chef. This last time it was my birthday and we went during lunch hours. The chef was rude to me this time and he was rude to me last time when I had him. For whatever reason, if I ask for teriyaki sauce instead of the other sauces they provide on the side he gets the worst attitude with me. It’s so weird? I don’t get it, it’s just sauce. I’m the customer, I’m not being disrespectful so why are you treating me so poorly just because I request a different sauce. I even say it before he gives me the standard sauces so they don’t go to waste. I don’t know his name but management should make sure all the chefs honor the customer’s request if they’re reasonable. He also had a poor attitude while cooking just like he did last time. No extra fun spirit like the chef I watched across from him. I was sad we weren’t served by a different chef. He needs a new job… either way we’ll go to the Ann Arbor location moving forward even though this one is closer.

Update: just went to Sapporo Hibachi Steakhouse and Sushi in Livonia and I had the best experience ever. The chef was AMAZING, I asked for teriyaki sauce and he happily delivered. He was so fun and friendly, you can tell he enjoys his job. There’s been a new standard set. I’ll never be back to Ichiban, I’ll go to Sapporo instead and be treated with respect.

It was just ok. They didn't serve miso soup, it was a chicken broth based soup. It was good, but not what I thought. The grilling was done well and the griller did his part to create an atmosphere. However, the seafood was all over cooked and the steak had little flavor. The best thing on the menu are the vegetables, yakimeshi, and chicken. If I hadn't had anything else I'd give it 4 stars. The service was good, but rushed. The women's bathroom needed attention.

Unfortunately this will be the last time my family visits what used to be one of our favorite restaurants. The restaurant has gone down hill tremendously. It is not well kept any longer. The tables are dirty as well as some of the dishes we were served. We had to ask for new plates. The seat covers on the chairs are stained and the seat backs they are covering are broken. We waiting a very long time in between our soup and salad before the cook came out to make our hibachi dinner. Usually there is the traditional hibachi banter, show, tricks during the cooking of your food. We. Got. Nothing. Finally our meal was served. My husband and son both ordered a filet and when it was plated they both smelled a rancid odor emitting from it. Each of them bravely took a bite and regretted it immediately. The cook didn’t care when we brought it to his attention. He brought out 2 additional steaks to cook at our request and when he did so, the steaks were also rancid. A manager never came to speak to us. The bill for our meal was still over $100 and our family of 3 left hungry. We won’t ever go back!

The food was average - definitely not comparable to other sushi restaurants in the area. I used to like their sushi but the quality has changed sadly. For what you get food wise and money wise, you can get bigger and better sushi at other places than here. I am not happy about the automatic tip on the bill. I didn’t read previous reviews until after, and that’s on me, but adding that tip to the bill when service wasn’t good makes it very frustrating and doesn’t make me want to go back. When your server only checks in on you a couple of times and you need something to where you have to get up and go find her, that’s not acceptable service to me. So forcing the tip instead of allowing someone to choose isn’t right.

My family loves this place! The establishment is always clean, and there are no weird odors emanating from the kitchen or restrooms.

The staff is always accommodating and attentive. The food is excellent for the price. The atmosphere is inviting.

We celebrated my kiddos' birthdays at Ichiban, and the staff was helpful with storing our cakes and joining in the celebration.

I was upset that when I walked in I was walked to the separate dining area instead of where the hibachi grills were located. After I inquired she did ask if I would like to sit over there, I said no because most of the time people dine in at these places so they can see their food being cooked. Food was decent not bad but nothing to write home about either. I noticed the area smelled of cigarette smoke but the waitress assured me it wasn’t. Now it’s time to leave and she brings me the bill and the bill had an up charge of 18% and I ate alone. I’m like what is this she said a tip is automatically added to the bill I said since when she said here recently I asked where is this publish and when would I have known she stated I’m telling you now. I said please remove this chart from my account. She did but then harassed me about payment although I was still drinking my adult beverage. She finally walked away and I walked to the counter because I was made to feel uncomfortable. I paid the last and was walking out and was approached by another lady demanding that I stop and pay I’m like I just did add she went to several people trying to confirm. I was pissed and decided we will never have our parties here or patronize this restaurant ever again

Food is what is expected. I give such a low score because they add a 20% tip automatically. In addition to that, they print the receipt and staple it to the bill in such a way that it covers up the portion showing the added tip amount. It’s a dirty move. Run as FAR away from this as you can. We went for mother’s days for last minute reservations because every other restaurant was booked. When I tell you I wouldn’t even come here if someone gave me unlimited free food. The plates were dirty and server argued with us about it when they’re clearly dirty. There was a wrapper from a straw in my soup, then after when I finally got my drink it tasted like someone legit spit in it. The cook dropped items and put it back into the grill lmao how are people still coming here? The server kept trying to justify everything. Please save your money and your family members from coming here, I would give zero stars if I could.

My favorite hibachi in the area! Better than Benihana as well. Great prices, great staff and a wide variety of food options. I've been here for two birthday parties also and they have an option for dessert, opening lotus candle with music, and they take and print a picture out for you which is really sweet. This might be the last time me and my family visit. Unfortunately, the prices have gone up and portions have decreased (they already had lunch and dinner prices but this time we noticed the portions were decreased on most items). Recipes have also changed such as the amount of seafood in the crab rangoon and I believe it was cheddar cheese that was mixed in there that added a little sharpness to each bite, and the miso soup seemed a little sweet. Salad was not included with our usual orders. Finally, for a family (not of 'party size'), an 18% tip was already included after taxes on our bill. On the merchant copy of the receipt, the amount with the tip was noted as pre-tip amount, which makes it seem like no tip was included.

Our server was acting like he could not hear and some things we asked for we never got. We normally come here for birthdays and things. Today was a party of about 20. When it was time to pay everyone gave money and cards. I’m the matriarch of the family and it could have turned ugly because the waitress literally SNATCHED the receipt out of my hand til the sound of everyone at our table stopped. I guess back in its prime time opening it was a beautiful and seemingly exotic place to go? You walk in to weathered doors and dirty floors with no kind of mat or decor at the entrance. The chairs have these cheap cheesy looking covers on them. They had one server on a Friday night, at least thats what we saw on the grill side. The nice part of the night was presentation of when the chef was cooking the food, they make it entertaining. The salmon did not look or taste like salmon but it was very fishy. The chicken was not organically raised and was a little tough, and they dont give you any condiments unless you ask. Now when you get your bill, be prepared for the automatic 18 % gratuity they add on and dont mention to you...guess this is the new norm? Overall, I appreciated the way the chef handled special requests and cooked food for those with certain food allergies first. I certainly wont spend that kind of money again on low grade food.

The ratings and reviews for this restaurant are way too high. We read the reviews before visiting the location. Reviews made it seem as if the restaurant was magnificent and food was excellent when in fact it’s the opposite. The inside is old and outdated. We wanted to try both sushi and hibachi so we ordered both. Sushi and hibachi were mediocre and overpriced compared to other Japanese restaurants in metro Detroit. Sushi had no taste and some rolls were too big to bite. Chicken and steak Hibachi with fried rice was tasteless too. I do not recommend this restaurant. If you are looking for excellent sushi, visit Oyaki in Dearborn Heights. The best sushi, fried rice, and other Japanese dishes in metro Detroit. You will not be disappointed.

From walking in the door until having the salad served it took 2.5 hours. I understand that this was a Saturday evening but that seemed like an obnoxiously long wait. I found a small bit of plastic in my salad. The Chef was funny and did a great job. The bill took forever to show up and when it did there was already a 20% gratuity added which is not ok. I would have tipped 15% because that's the bare minimum and I feel I received the bare minimum. I will not be returning.

It was terrible. We had enough to fill multiple tables, a reservation and the inconsiderate, racist staff treated us so badly it ruined the day. We had been loyal customers for years, but every visit the experience worsened.

I went for a birthday dinner with the family. It was a great time. The food was good from what I order ( steak and shrimp fried rice with vegetables) and the host was nice and on point and we had a good cook who was interacting with the party. First of all, they sat us, we watched the other side of the table get served how enthusiastic the chef was, and we were really excited for it to be our turn. Then, when our turn came from the first person to service person, the ones that bring you your soup and your salad. She was very pleasant and took our drink orders, drinks cane, everyone was pleased with their drinks. The drinks were good. when it was time for the chef to cook the food, he was very dry, he didn’t do any type of tricks no performances no flipping out the vegetables into the mouth no Psaki in the beginning. Someone wanted extra egg in our rice he’s he said oh it had to be on the order OK which we understood charge us for is the egg how much can it be for real. I’m one of the girls asked for scallops. He let the scallops get chard the person he was preparing for, did not like it. The chef got upset. So another person at the table said I’ll take those scallops versus you guys throwing them away and just add it to my bill. One person at the table was allergic to shrimp, and we asked that the steak not be cooked next to the shrimp, the chef got an attitude and said you should’ve said that when you ordered the food. It wasn’t until the end of the dinner of the night that he wanted to give us saki shots and be engaged with us, which made it a horrible experience because now you’re only doing it because you see that it’s a tip at the end of the table, I’ll be back because I like Ichiban but I know to request a friendly, enthusiastic, engaging table chef as well.

Food is terrible unless you sit at hibachi side. Literally seems like they serve you pre cooked food. You can tell if you cook. The proteins aren’t seared as if they’ve been recently cooked or cooked at all honestly. The food is always lukewarm when I sit at the table area. Then you’re paying 40+ $ for food that isn’t properly prepared like this is disgusting physically and financially. I will never eat here again. If I could leave a negative star it would be 3 negative stars

Ordered two sushi rolls and lunch hibachi (chicken). The rice had good flavor and veggies were cooked well. The chicken tasted like it had gone bad. The flavor and the sauce were good and then when you started to chew the chicken, it tastes spoiled. Did not finish it at all. Lunch portion size was fairly small as well but a good amount of rice. I was nervous to eat the sushi rolls but they seemed to be okay.

Went about 12pm on Friday and place was deserted, only one other table. They also already add gratuity on to your bill so be ware so you’re not double tipping unless you had superior service.

Used to be great, would give everyone 2 small starter shrimp. Now gone. Went new year's eve and got the Itcheban for 2 meal, the steak was 4 pcs about 3/8" thick and fit in a 2 inch square and the lobster amounted to 4 pieces which were not very big. The quantity of chicken seemed to be even less. Greatly disappointed but will go 1 more in case our experience was just a fluke

We had a wonderful experience at the Canton Ichiban! It was my brothers birthday and they went out of their way to make it special! First and last time Extremely disappointed with the service at this restaurant. Our family, with specific dietary restrictions due to religious beliefs, encountered an incredibly rude chef. Despite clearly stating our inability to consume alcohol, the fried rice served to us contained alcohol, which was not disclosed beforehand. When we politely brought this up, the chef's reaction was unprofessional and hostile. He not only became visibly agitated but also engaged in disrespectful side conversations about our group, making us feel extremely uncomfortable. Our accommodating nature was met with disdain and disrespect. Overall, an experience that left us feeling disrespected and unwelcome.

When dining here pay attention to your bill. You are force to tip regardless of how you feel the service was. It was my wife, son, and I for dinner. Charged $18 for tip. The has an amount that say "pre tip" amount. If you look at the itemized bill that is the amount including tip. They are double dipping on the tip!

I cannot believe that THIS LOCATION is so run down and dirty. I went into the bathroom and regretted having placed an order already. The bathroom, the fixtures, furniture, and overall interior of the restaurant are a sign of how poorly maintained and managed this location is. Then came the bill, dinner for two without any alcohol was $140 plus tax and tip, just two hibachi dinners. We could of went to a classy and clean place for that much.

Upon walking in the door, I noticed that the floor was extremely dirty. I should have left at that point but I didn't. Secondly the soup was stale or old. Thirdly, I ordered shrimp, chicken and steak. The shrimp had a faint mildew odor and the tereacki sauce that went on my chicken was old as well. If you go to a restaurant and the floors are extremely dirty... LEAVE! If they don't care about keeping the restaurant clean, imagine what they think about the food that they serve! AWFUL!!!

The server conveniently stalled the receipt for signature on top of the actual bill and didn't mention the tip was added. I heard they do this all the time, so check your bill!

Food was good, pretty standard chicken hibachi, just very small portion size, not much meat and rice. The worst part is the service was mediocre and they give themselves the tip! Drinks were in need of refills, and lot of servers standing around.

WATCH OUT: GRATUITY IS MANDATORY, AND ALREADY INCLUDED ON A LINE ITEM ON YOUR BILL! There is a blank under the tip section so your led to believe that you should tip them like normal, but you already tipped them because it's mandatory! No mention of it anywhere. I almost ended up tipping twice, like 50%! It's sneaky and dishonest!

The food we had was Awesome but our hibachi chef was boring and the atmosphere was depressing. I would look elsewhere for good Hibachi.

We came here for my Dad's birthday at 6pm on a Friday and the place was EMPTY. We actually thought they may have been closed when we walked in at first as there was no staff at the front door or any visible diners. Half of the restaurant had the lights turned off and had chairs stacked on tables that looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months. It took about 10 minutes before a staff member appeared to seat us.

When we got to our table, our seats were filthy and had rice all over them, my mother actually had to ask for a different chair as her chair cover was wet from something! After about 20 minutes after taking our order, our chef appeared and began cooking our food.

The food was Delicious I will not deny, it may have been some of the best fried rice I had ever eaten and my steak was cooked perfectly.

We expected at least a little bit of a show from our Hibachi chef since it was my dad's bday, but he didn't do or say a word. Just cooked our food and then left. Meanwhile the table next to us had a chef that was flinging food into people's mouths and doing cool tricks with his utensils and all sorts of stuff. My sister and I were honestly a little envious.

The good food was not worth the $125 bill we got afterwards. I would have been happy with that maybe if the place had been less depressing and if our chef had put on a good show but alas. If I had to guess, this restaurant is circling the drain. Cutting corners when it comes to cleaning and staff are huge red flags. My guess is this place will no longer be around in a couple of years.
