Direwolf Tavern was designed to be an inclusive space for all to gather in the heart of Salem. Guests can enjoy our interpretation of tavern favorites paired with the creative, award-wining sushi fans have come to expect from 87 Washington Street. The warm, inviting tavern will serve a fast, casual weekday lunch as well as weekend brunch.
The service here was amazing. Our waitress was very quick with getting us our drinks, taking our order, and refilling our water. The atmosphere was pleasant, and very clean and nice. My only issue was with the bathroom that could have used a little more attention, cleaning, getting the graffiti off the walls.
The drinks were excellent. I had the Six Feet Under, which was amazing. The food was good as well. My wife started with the New England Clam Chowder, which was excellent. I had the Calimari, which was fantastic. For our entrees, my wife had the Ceasar Salad, and added steak points. The steak was cooked perfectly and was so tender, she didn't even need a knife to cut it. I had the fish tacos. I wish that I could say they were amazing, but I was very underwhelmed. First, there were only two, which shocked me, as most places usually give you 3. Second, the haddock was warm, not hot and crispy as you would expect for a fried fish. Lastly, the portion was alright, but the size of the fish could have been a little more. While some of my fries were slightly crispy, there were just as many that were limp and soggy.
Some people may bash me for not sending the food back, but I am not a complainer, and will eat what is given to me.
While we may give them another chance, if we make it back up here, I would not recommend the fish tacos.

It was my 1st time to this place. I love the atmosphere and the food was great! Had the Salmon sashimi dish as an app and fish tacos with the most amazing Brussel sprouts for a main. The waitress was really great and attentive. We also met the GM, Jay, a super nice guy. He's doing a great job making sure his customers have a pleasant experience. We'll definately be back to see the entertainment. Oh and you have to try the Apple crisp with vanilla icecream😋

Atmosphere:
It’s a nice clean Tavern well decorated and comfy seats and high top tables.
Service:
Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time.
Chicken bites:
These were very good. We had the Carolina Gold (Gold Fever) which was an orange bbq sauce and was great. The Sweet Chili Soy was a bit too strong and salty tasting.
Poke Bowl:
Had a decent amount of salmon. Good tasting dressing. A lot of rice. We wish it had more lettuce and seaweed salad.
The Wolfe Burger:
The burger had good flavor however the brioche bun and burger were both a bit on the dry side. Not horrible just a bit dryer than my liking.

Came from Miami, FL to visit Salem. Upon arriving this was the first place we ate at on Monday night- delicious drinks, food, and great service. I would have given 6 stars if I could. Come today it’s my last day in town and I couldn’t stop thinking about the clam chowder so I order it online delivery from their site- which I can understand mistakes happen but this is a big one. I ordered the clam chowder bowl $14- I had had the cup in the restaurant and was left wanting more. I receive the food, excited for the chunks of bacon, crab and the oyster crackers only to find they gave me the tiniest cup of what seems like only the base of the chowder- no crab chunks, no bacon, no oyster crackers. I was very sad because I loved this place and that clam chowder.

Just got into Salem and we are hungry. Walking down the street and happen upon this beautiful building with a massive wolf logo.
Waiter was generous polite and helpful. I listened as he suggested other awesome spots to the couple next to us. He’s fast on a water refill as well.
Poutine which as a Canadian can be tricky but this is second to our friendly southerns of the north. Seriously, gravy cheese and fries topped with scallions, only thing I need was vinegar but I didn’t care.
My wife got adventurous and went with the Dr Pepper marinated steak with mashed potatoes and green beans.. holy sh*t that was amazing. And my wife is a specialist when it comes to steak and green beans… home run all around.
Plus to top it, massive Jerry Garcia photo on the way down the steps to the bathroom where there is also what I imagine a speak easy night spot….
Bathrooms also very clean.
Must go….

I have been coming to Dire Wolf since before when it was Opus. I cannot say enough about the great atmosphere, but even more so about the food, drinks, and most of all the staff. I have held two private events in Hallowed Ground and I can say there is no better place. The event pricing was more than reasonable and staff went above and beyond to accommodate me and ensure the event went perfectly. Fridays are peak hours for any restaurant but Dire Wolf let me schedule my event on a Friday from 6-9 with no extra charge (other places were charging extra just because it was a Friday). Staff went out of their to make specialty drinks for my event, and provided quality food and a great welcoming atmosphere. I highly encourage booking your next event at Hallowed Ground, you won't get better pricing or service, not to mention the best drinks around. Thanks to Megan, Shawn, and the rest of the staff for making my event memorable.

Pretty good food, amazing service, and excellent space for board games! You will need to reserve early if you want to have any space at all though! Otherwise, go at your own risk because you'll probably be put on the wait list! That's how awesome this place is!!

Changed to 4* as hate to hurt small business, but stick by my review: It was ok, just ok, wouldn't return. Weird vibe as well. $24 salad had way too much dressing, nothing special, clam chowder ok. Conveniently located.

We have eaten dinner in the Dire Wolf restaurant and in the speakeasy downstairs. Sean is a great bartender and made our visit a 10 out of 10. The nachos are awesome! Cheezy and crunchy!

Took their cocktail class which was so much fun! Hoping they have another one soon.
The food is great, the staff is friendly and provide excellent service. Highly recommend both the Tavern upstairs and the Speak Easy downstairs.

Loved the chicken burger, the place is cute and our server Vanessa was so so nice!
Edit: lowered the rating because around 3 days later we got a charge on our debit card of 10% of the bill we paid here out of nowhere, they didn’t ever mention this charge.

We just happened to stumble upon this restaurant while visiting Salem for Xmas shopping. Stopped in and were very surprised and very pleased with our choice of resturants. The environment is very relaxed but "hip-contempory" with brick walls, high ceilings, interesting art/wall coverings, etc. The hostess was polite and pleasant. They seated us promptly at a table by the window, so we had a great view of downtown Salem. Our waitperson came over to greet us within moments, was pleasant and answered questions about "favorites"on the menu. The menu wasn't extensive but there were choices for sandwich lovers, salad eaters, seafood seekers and chicken choices, too. Prices were fair with food quality very nice. The mix of customers in the restaurant was very diverse, representing the full spectrum. Dire Wolf Tavern strives to be
inclusive, respectful and welcoming. We definitely saw this and experienced too. Downstairs is a sweet, intimate, "speak easy" style lounge with a small stage. It looks like an awesome place to meetup with friends, relax and have a drink.

We had our rehearsal dinner for our wedding at Hallowed Ground Speakeasy. It was a great experience, we were able to rent out the speakeasy for our celebration and they even created a signature cocktail list tailored to us! Jay the manager was great, he recently joined the team and was an amazing addition. Prior to him joining there was a little bit of a lack of communication/organization, so if you want to host an event here just ask for him directly! He completely made up for the stress at the beginning, with multiple phone calls and even reaching out to check in on questions etc. Our guests raved about the food and drinks, and it was an amazing night. If you are looking for a cocktail reception space in Salem, I recommend Hallowed Ground/Dire Wolf. Our guests enjoyed this bar so much, that they even went back for an impromptu "after party" the night of our wedding as well. Such a fun time, thank you Dire Wolf team!

The food was pretty good, but service was sparse. In fairness to the establishment, it was Halloween week in Salem and I know they were slammed. Food was decent, but nothing stood out for the price. Restrooms were down a set of stairs and it wasn't clear if there was an accessible way to get to them if you have mobility issues.

This is about upstairs. Been to former Opus many times before the pandemic! It was vibrant and great across the board.
Anyhow, 3 weeks ago I stopped by upstairs.
Slow very slow service but that was not the end of the world. Then felt like ordering Sushi! Yes you may think I am silly because this is no where close to a real Japanese restaurant.
After my order took 20min,
It was wrong! Ok things happen. Then another 15min here comes the fun:
Maki rolls nearly 2.5 inches!
Nigiri (fish cut nicely) over rice, was literally a dry golf ball with a random cut of fish on top.
Presentation was even amazing! Soggy salad leaves below the "sushi".
Not bashing for the sake of it, just helping the establishment and potential customers

My group of 8 went a few weeks ago in the middle of their craziest season- the team there was so kind and so accommodating to us! The host at the door was an absolute treasure, they were so helpful! For 8 people, we waited about an hour which worked out perfectly because we were able to do something else and get a text that our table would be ready, so convenient! The manager and our host originally sat us outside, which they moved heaters over for us- which a little while later they were able to get us inside! The inside is so cozy and I know I’ll be back! Our host was also so nice, he went above and beyond for us, even separated our 8 checks. Honestly if I could give more stars- I would. If you’re visiting Salem- go here. Thanks again everyone!

Girl, bye. Look at the response they gave me below. Sure man; you sold more tickets to an event than you knew you could handle. And you promised dancing and a fun time but I stood in line for most of my time in this bar.
From my email;
Thanks for your feedback, Jesse. We’re sorry to hear your experience didn’t meet expectations. Unfortunately, we did reach capacity downstairs pretty quickly and with the safety of our guests and staff in mind we did need to limit entries. We appreciate your insights on the ticketing and service issues, and we’re working on improving these aspects for next year. I'm truly am sorry this negatively affected your evening. We hope you'll consider visiting us again during a quieter time for a better experience.
Best,
Megan Kelley
Manager
Dire Wolf Tavern and Hallowed Ground Lounge
Happy you got my Halloween money but you and your bar made my time in Salem less than what it could have been and you did it intentionally.
Don’t sell more tickets for an event than you can handle.
I think my experience was skewed a bit by being sold a $25 ticket for a Halloween party but then not having a dance floor and having to stand in a 45 minute lineup to access the live band downstairs.
Was also pretty weird that we couldn’t buy a drink and a shot of tequila at the same time from one bartender but then less than 30 seconds later we were allowed to buy the shot.
I’d maybe go back during non peak season to give them another try but the staff kinda seemed overwhelmed by the amount of people there last night

Went for a Halloween dance party event as we were in town for Halloween, paid 25 USD coz we booked online in advance, but people standing in the basement queue had paid 50 at the door and were very unhappy about it.
it’s the epitome of a tourist trap. It seemed Disorganised, and just a cash grab.
They sold tickets but wouldn’t let people into the venue to see the live band coz they were “at capacity”
After waiting for 30 minutes standing in the queue for the basement, they let 2 of us in and the other 2 were still waiting outside for another 20 minutes. They were letting some random people cut through line and making others wait for some reason. The band playing was pretty good though but after all that hassle we were just not feeling it anymore.
The drink service was slow, the bar wasn’t actually that busy. 3 different bartenders came to ask if we got helped but no one actually grabbed our drinks for another 10 minutes. Wouldn’t go back, do not recommend it.
We spent more time waiting in line than we actually ended up spending at the event.
After weird service and the overall experience, we went out and just decided to walk around town which ended up being much more fun than being at the event.
No thank you.

Our bartender was very inattentive. Only had three interactions during the hour we were there. Never got our waters, silverware, S&P when we needed them. No personality, just an order taker. I tipped only $8. Which she is lucky I tipped at all. I was visiting from out of town, when I got home I checked my account and saw that the bartender had given herself an extra $5. I called the bar to dispute but never heard back. Other than that, the food was great.
Update: Recieved refund 👍🏼

Chose it for the tavern name and proximity to the train station, but that was a happy accident as the service, food and atmosphere were excellent!
John was bartending. He’s a gem! He advised he was newer at the location, but you couldn’t tell. Impeccable service. Kept the drinks going fast and furious as bar tickets came up, but also added politely and hilariously to the conversation with myself and friends.

I like bulleted lists so let’s go with that:
1. I got the goat cheese & beet salad w/steak, the steak came out 10 min after the salad, I had to ask for silverware & also extra goat cheese because it was that scarce. Super not great service; but the steak & salad are good & the portions appropriate.
2. It is close to the train so that’s a plus.
3. The sign said wait for the hostess; but the hostess was MIA
4. Difficult to get the bartenders attention; I mean I put in food & silverware literally never came.
5. The bathrooms aren’t wheelchair accessible from what I gathered.
6. Picture of my salad because regardless of the not so hot things. The Salad was bomb

I want to start off by saying I never write reviews - I’m pretty chill and rarely complain when it comes to going to restaurants. Came today around 3pm to celebrate my birthday with my boyfriend however we left disappointed. The bartender was very nice but incredibly slow, which we would understand had it been busy but it was not. We sat for 5-10 mins before even ordering drinks. He asked if we were getting food to which we replied yes, but we never got food menus - though not a huge deal, we just used our phones. We ordered an app which was delivered pretty quickly but we never got a chance to order entrees or even another round of drinks. We just sat waiting and waiting. This was disappointing as there were a few things on the menu that we really wanted to try. I also noticed that the people sitting around us were not greeted promptly either and were waiting to place orders. After 55 mins (1 round of drinks and 1 app) we ended up asking for the check and going to eat somewhere else. It was a shame as the atmosphere and menus were great but the lack of urgency from the staff felt unwelcoming.

Okay we just popped in here to get some food not right in the middle of the crowds but still close to everything. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I was hungry.
I just ordered the smash burger with a side of poutine fries (side portion not full app order recommended by the server). The poutine was great! But this burger, I still think about this burger and it was 1.5 weeks ago. It was so perfectly cooked, juicy, and literally melted in my mouth. I’m not much of a burger person, but if I had more burgers like this I would be. It was incredible.
Then for ambience you have the speakeasy downstairs with an amazing espresso martini!
Highly recommend!

Great restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. The food is delicious and the service was great. As for drinks, they have a drink called Pumpkin Spiced B*tch which I highly recommend. All the fall vibes in a delicious drink. They also have a rewards app that, if you download, you will get a reward for a free appetizer, which is available immediately and available for I believe 2 weeks before it expires. Will definitely go back the next time we are in town.

She even mentioned that the kitchen would be happy to prepare an unseasoned burger for our dog, which totally made our night! Keep up the great work Paige! Thank you for your kindness and warm welcome!

Most insensitive racist and downright not funny stand up comedy I've ever seen. Had to put my drink down and walk out. It should be up to the bar to vet these open mic comedians prior because wow...just wow. Makes trump look like a gentleman

The staff was incredibly welcoming from the moment we stepped into the front door. We spent a few days in Salem and the food here was the best we had, the brussel sprouts were absolutely amazing. If you're in Salem, do not walk by the Dire Wolf Tavern, stop in for a bite and a drink.

Stopped in for an early afternoon Guinness and was delighted by the atmosphere and service. Special thanks to our bartender Emily. Word on the street is the downstairs bar cocktails are worth coming back for in the evening… (edit: just not on Mondays 😭)
Edit: came back for dinner because, why not? We went tapas style and got a collection of apps and sides. The yuca fries, mac n cheese, and Brussels sprouts were all fantastic. The chicken tenders were advertised as crispy and though super yummy, weren’t crispy. We mentioned it to our phenomenal server, Vanessa, and they took care of it
Outstanding service isn’t a promise that nothing will go wrong. It’s how you respond when something is less than ideal. This place rocks!!!

Dire Wolf is very nearly a gem. Was able to get a nice table near the front window and the food was genuinely splendid. Small nitpicks: it's a bit cramped and very popular, so can be loud. They can run out of certain foods. The clam chowder is delicious but more of a stew. My choice of cocktail could not be made virgin so I settled for a Shirley temple since I was driving.

Was busy when we arrived but got seated quickly.
Food came out fairly quick and was nice a hot. We ordered the chicken bites and tzatziki.
The sauce (Carolina Gold) on the chicken wasn't my favourite, and the tzatziki only came with 1 piece of naan which wasn't really enough for the dip in my opinion. But the food had was pretty good otherwise.
Overall the restaurant experience was good, but I'll probably try different food next time I'm there

I'd gotten the Butcher's Pie, a twist on Shephard's Pie that has brisket AND ground beef. The topping, cheddar whipped potatoes, were cheesy and melded well with the veggies & meats.

Our Bartender Zoey was amazing! Unfortunately the food was awful. Dripping Chicken was definitely not dripping with anything including flavor. The app we got was blah. The Beer however was so cold, Ioved it!

Served warm water no ice awful taste
Calamari was like rubber
Fries greasy and soggy and over salted
Burgers and mac and cheese both very good. Slightly priced.
Service pretty good

I used to come here when this was Opus, but now with the change of scenery I had to come back; it didn't disappoint.
I had two of the specials for the night (Braised Short Rib Gnocchi & Crab Rangoon Sushi Roll) along with the Dire Wolf Sushi Roll. Everything was delicious and I wasn't expecting such great Sushi- even though I should have, Opus was always great at it.
Overall, our experience was fantastic with service that even superceded the food. If you're in Salem for upcoming fall I would definitely check this place out.

21 dollars (after tax and tip) for the driest, blandest, tiniest chicken sandwich you’ve ever had. I took one bite and threw it away it was so bad. Such a ripoff go somewhere else.

Food was delicious so many options almost couldn’t decide on one. The crab rangoon sushi is amazing and a great portion. Smash burger is juicy and very filling. Staff are very nice, friendly, and helpful. Oz was an amazing server and very accommodating when we asked to switch from outside to inside.

We were very excited to visit this place from the looks online and the menu. Unfortunately it was an absolute let down! The people were friendly and welcoming. Although I think our server might have been new. He had to keep coming back to double check what was said when we had ordered. The baked Brie was literally 4 rectangular pieces about half the size of my thumb in a bowl of blueberries with two pieces of toast cut in half. They did take this off of our bill. Steak tips were over cooked, the cheddar mashed potatoes didn’t really have much flavor and the overall flavor of the dish was weird, not in a good way. The yucca fries were good. The poutine said cheese curds, but it was just melted cheese. It wasn’t bad but not poutine. Downstairs was closed so we weren’t able to experience that. Unfortunately, we don’t think we would go back.

Came in for a few drinks last night with my friends, and it was fun. I tried two tequila drinks (a heatwave, and fresa en Fuego), which were both pretty awesome. The Fuego had the perfect amount of kick to it. Service was excellent, and very kind. ☺️

First time in Salem and stopped here for lunch.
Food was ok. My sister didn’t particularly like the cod tacos and they did credit us for that. I had the Wolfe burger. It was decent but lacking flavor for me personally. The truffle fries were pretty good.
My only complaint was the water they filled our glasses with didn’t have any ice and was basically tap temperature.
All in all it was ok. Not sure I would eat there again without trying other options

So after a horrible Hollowed Ground initiation, it was refreshing to come upstairs and receive great service. I was greeted immediately, order was taken within 5 mins. Food was great, got the smoked brisket panini. It was like day and night. Sara was great.

What happened to this place? Sushi was falling apart also flavorless. Fries was burnt and soggy. Margarita tasted like an extra sour lemonade 😝 Bartenders were inattentive had to ask for 3 different people for a glass of water. I missed Opus
