Sushi Experience №1

It was super busy and the host was able to squeeze us in at the sushi bar which we appreciated. The sushi was very good. The wait staff was nice but extremely slow. We could see the sushi plates piling up and not being brought to tables. It took 45 minutes for us to get anything. We only ended up ordering a few things, we would have gotten more but we were starving and couldn’t wait. I’d go back because the sushi was that good, but it would have to be like right when they open so maybe we can have a better experience.

The staff at SUSHICO were attentive when my friend and I went. They greeted us right when we came in, offered us the menus, and gave us plenty of time to decide. We sat at the bar, which had no time limit, as opposed to the tables that do have a time limit, as per the host's explanation.
Our drinks were served shortly before the appetizers came out.
The food was well timed and melt-in-your-mouth good, as other reviewers pointed out, aesthetically presented, and fitting with the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant.
The most memorable thing about this experience was how patient and attentive the staff were, allowing us plenty of time to finish eating and close out our check as they closed the restaurant for the night.
We were there the evening before Thanksgiving, and had an all around remarkable experience at SUSHICO.
I would happily recommend as well as return.

Hands down best sushi in massachusetts. I’ve been everywhere in boston and nothing compares to what chef alex and lovely wife have built. The chef selection nigiri is my personal favorite and includes a variety of different fresh fish with intricate flavor profiles in each bite. But nothing compares to the service and hospitality you experience at this establishment. Stop what you are doing right now and make a reservation before it gets booked!

Very electric modern take on sushi than traditional. Thoroughly enjoyed creative garnish on maki rolls, but wished the nigiris we tried were more on the traditional side as the garnishing was a bit overpowering to my liking and could not enjoy the delicate fish taste.
Very simple clean deco, and the owner chef Alex came over to greet us, making sure we were being taken care of, which you hardly ever see at restaurants.
Surprised they do not have menu, but give you a paper menu with a pencil to check off order , like fast food sushi chains.. make sure you check off the right item as we checked off the wrong row, LOL.
Black bass nigiri $5
Hamachi nigiri $5
Kanpachi nigiri $5
Bluefin tuna nigiri $5
Cuttlefish ika nigiri $5 torched
Whitefish umeboshi shiso maki $11
Spicy tuna maki -extra spicy$11 could be spicier
Tuna avocado yuzu kosho Thai basil maki $12 delightful surprise!
Ora king salmon maki $10 wrong item we checked off on paper.
Tempura shrimp maki $13
Umeboshi maki $6
Southside roll from houe special maki -tuna togarashi fried garlic micro greens chives crunch yuzu mayo kayaking sauce $19 -was little two sweet
I would return to sit at the bar for omakase menus.

My husband and I were blown away by our meal the other night. I frankly don’t think I can enjoy sushi and nigiri anywhere else now. All of the offerings were beyond fresh. So much thought was put into each dish. Alex, the owner, checked in on us through out the meal. Great guy. We are definitely going back, likely sooner than we think!

Update. The food was incredibly fresh, and the menu was creative. Even the sushi rice, a crucial element of Japanese cuisine, was exceptional. Towards the end of the meal, the owner and manager came to check on us and apologized for the poor service. This gesture and the food quality added two stars to our overall experience, which had started with a single star.

We had not yet ordered our food, but the service so far had been the worst we had ever encountered in the Boston area. The young waiter and waitress were inattentive - two of them said they would return to us, but never did. We were left unattended for an extended period, and it took 15 minutes before we were even offered water. The staff seemed to actively avoid making eye contact as they passed by our table.
While we understand it was a busy Saturday evening, two customers who had just arrived and sat at the bar besides us were immediately served glasses of water. The wait time was completely unreasonable.
On a positive note, it was understandable that we could only get a table at the bar as walk-ins. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends.

Edit: i thought of a negative. Its so annoying to be closed on sundays. Ugh. I want sushico on sundays about 40% of the time.

I love sushico. Consistently good sushi. Fresh and clean flavors. They don't deliver but that's the only thing I can think of that can even be considered a negative. I've tried almost everything on their menu and I've got my favorites. South side Roll, Martha's vineyard roll, the tacos are so good!!! Spicy tiger roll, mambo roll, Phoenix roll!!!
Not cheap but the nuanced flavors are worth it. This is high quality sushi.

Coming across a place like SUSHICO is like finding a kangaroo at a dingo's breakfast - absolutely remarkable! Let me tell you, mates, this place rolls sushi better than Shane Warne spins a cricket ball. The delectable morsels they serve are a gastronomical delight, making every bite an experience to savor.

Now, listen up because we're about to immerse ourselves in the ocean of SUSHICO's eloquent sushi offerings. The Nigiri and sashimi were like the twang of a didgeridoo, flawlessly presented and sending your taste buds into overdrive. The sashimi was, to put it mildly, a symphony of raw brilliance, with flavors dancing on my palate like an energetic kangaroo.

Moving on to their special rolls, it was like a Steve Irwin adventure - unexpected, daring, and emotionally stirring. The entire experience was akin to an avian migration across the globe; it started in Japan, fluttered through the realms of creativity, and somehow managed to land right in your heart. The flavor profiles were reminiscent of my Aussie roots, wild and free yet intricate and sophisticated.

But let's not forget about the value you get here. Few places offer this level of sushi expertise with such an appealing price tag. It's akin to spotting a rare echidna - you get more than you bargained for!

And finally, can we just take a moment to appreciate the presentation? Like the grand finale of a Sydney New Year's Eve Fireworks display, each plate was a meticulously crafted visual feast. SUSHICO wins incredibly in making your food look as good as it tastes.

In the grand scheme of things, every aspect of SUSHICO shines, from the food to the value and the presentation. It doesn't just offer a peak culinary experience. It rolls you up in a delightful journey as memorable as a lazy afternoon spent watching the stars in the Southern Hemisphere. Now isn't that as Aussie as it gets, mate?

SUSHICO is the absolute best place I have tried sushi. The Nigiri is insanely good. Absolutely delicious. The fish is very fresh and melts as you eat. It’s a must to try all the Nigiris. Chef Alex is wonderful, he greets his guests and checks on you during your time in the restaurant. Staff is super friendly and kind. We have been already three times within the past 2 weeks and can’t wait to go again. If I could give 10 stars I would. Best Sushi Restaurant in Boston and Greater Boston.

The food was excellent and very tasty, the service was worse than at the beach buffet. It wasn’t possible to do the reservation online so when we came it was full and could only sit at the bar. Nothing wrong with that if we weren’t overlooked for 15 minutes while standing at the door. Then we were seated at the bar and went unnoticed for another 15 mins. Then we got water and no menu and another 15 mins came by. People who came after us, AND were sitting next to us got everything sooner than us. We were literally sitting there for 30 minutes with nothing. Then when we finally gave the waiter the order, our drinks never arrived. For the price of food I expect the waiter to at least give me menu when seating me. I went to this restaurant because I got glowing recommendations from my friends and honestly my evening was disappointing.

Where do I begin... I guess at the fact that I walked in as a non-sushi person and left as a super fan! I haven't ever really been a big seafood lover, for no other reason than having been a picky child who never grew out of it :) While I love a good veggie based roll, I knew I had been missing out. I have heard so many rave reviews about SUSHICO, I was willing to step very far outside of my comfort zone and see what the buzz was about.

Chef Alex went above and beyond to make my experience exceptional, and comfortable. He spent time at our table (on a busy Saturday night), talking about the flavors I like, where and how the ingredients his restaurant uses are sourced and the pride he takes in ensuring only the best in quality.

I was blown away by the flavors, textures and overall deliciousness of everything we had. My husband, who is also an avid sushi ,fan proclaimed it was the best he ever had and we could never go anywhere else! Chef Alex came back to check on us many times throughout the evening and couldn't have been a more gracious host.

We look forward to many more visits in the (near) future and highly recommend SUSHICO to all!

After some Yelp sleuthing for dinner in Newton, we settled on Sushico. The restaurant has a modern and elegant ambiance and friendly service. We got to try a variety of their dishes and I had some really tasty items.

Must get
- Yellowtail jalapeno - super fresh and tender melt-in-your-mouth fish, crunchy jalapeno, tasty sauce. Definitely one of my favorite crudos I've had in the past year.
- Unnamed roll - I can't figure out what this roll was called (they might not sell it anymore), but it had tuna, chili crunch, and microgreens on top. It was my favorite roll that we tried! Flavors, textures, and fish were all on point.

Good
- Tuna with shiso - very tender tuna, fragrant shiso
- Salmon avocado roll - fresh and tasty
- King roll - very interesting combination of ingredients (salmon, avocado, mango, veggies)

Meh
- Sushi tacos - I was really looking forward to these after seeing them in reviews, but I wasn't a fan. The ceviche taco was sweet and didn't have much savory flavor, and the tuna taco didn't have much flavor. These could be okay dipped in soy sauce, but I think the other dishes we had were better.

Overall, I loved the yellowtail jalapeno and the roll I can't remember the name of. The items are not cheap -- $8 for a miso soup? what's in it? -- but they clearly put a lot of care into sourcing their ingredients and are passionate about fish and sushi. Everything was fresh, yummy, and inventive. And it was more filling than I expected! I would love to come back and try more rolls and raw appetizers in the future.

This place is too good to be true. The fish quality is fabulous. The shaping on nigiri is excellent. The hijiki seaweed salad and all the accompaniments were delicious and well seasoned. They were also very careful with my son's allergies. I didn't think this level of quality even existed in Boston. I've tried and disliked all the usual suspect for high end sushi in Boston preferring to only get it in New York and LA, but Sushi Co was a revelation.

Highly Recommended! This is our go-to sushi spot. They have the freshest fish served in preparations that highlight the quality of the fish. Simple, uncomplicated, and delicious. We typically get a large selection of nigiri and a couple of rolls. My favorite is the Northside Roll. Amazing!

The staff is friendly, fun, and dedicated to making sure everything is perfect. Prices are excellent, too. Especially considering the quality and variety of fish. We prefer SushiCo to places that cost twice as much.

Definity worth a visit, even if you are in downtown Boston. Easy access on the Green Line, so no excuse not to go!

Hands down the best sushi on the east coast and probably the world. The freshest fish is just the beginning…each piece is truly a work of art, stimulating the eyes and the palate.

If there was a Michelin guide to Boston, this would be top billing. Take my advice and do the omakase and a spicy margarita. Also, this sushi needs no wasabi or soy sauce - it will only take away from the delicately balanced flavors in each piece of nigiri.

I’ve visited 3 times since being introduced a couple months ago and I will be back for more. Thank you! The best!

I lived in Newton all my life, and finally found a new home for Sushi! It beats driving more than 10 minutes to find the best piece of fish in town, let alone in the country! I’ve traveled along the East and West coast and this is by far the best Sushi destination!

First thing you gotta try is the truffle edamame. It’s to die for. Fresh and tastes so good!

Then moving onto some Sashimi, Salmon and Tuna are my go to and nothing to complain here.

My main is special rolls with great flavor of Thai Basil and special mayo sauce.

Look, we need to talk about the tuna. If you've ever enjoyed sushi, as I have, after a couple decades checking out some of the best sushi joints in Boston, New York, SF, LA, and Paris, imagine my shock to find that Sushico is the place where TUNA IS AMAZING. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's usually the most underwhelming thing on the menu, tasting like a hunk of chilly almost flavorless nothing-or-other.

Consequently, savoring the tuna - and all the other offerings (right down to the miso soup - worth the price!) - was an experience that jolted me back into that present moment of Maximum Sushi Bliss (MSB). Sushico's MSB Score is a full throated 10 out of 10, neatly tucked into Newton Mass, we are lucky to have this gem, and its curator, Alex, at the helm of this impossibly incredible (yet utterly unpretentious) culinary experience.

Do not miss out. (P.S. Ask about a good sake pairing!)

It is not a traditional Japanese restaurant. They pre-soaked all raw fish with their special sauce. The good thing is that it tastes interesting, but at the same time, you don’t really taste the original flavor of the fish. The price is super expensive for the amount served. We spent more than $100 for 2 people and we were not even full. The servers were very kind though. Overall, I won’t go back.

Chef Alexander Nagi, is a born and raised New Englander with over 20 years of experience in the restaurant business.

Chef Nagi's history is richly woven with the ocean and what it has to offer. Spending quality time surfcasting for Stripers on Martha's Vineyard and going offshore for Bluefin Tuna, filled his summers growing up. His career has been largely inspired by the seasonality and migration of fish in our local waters.

This project is a culmination of all of chef Nagi's talents and desire to elevate great ingredients into great moments of our lives.

Best sushi ever! Excellent service! Jake, our affable, seasoned, and knowledgeable waiter, politely and patiently answered our questions about the menu, since my husband and I are not sushi ingredients connoisseurs. Our fresh, savory, delicious selections and refreshments were served respectfully and expeditiously! Sushico, conveniently located in the heart of Newton Centre, was nicely decorated and very clean. The low volume of the enjoyable background music was appreciated, for it enabled pleasant conversation without straining one's voice or ears. My husband and I will become loyal patrons of Sushico, for it is our new favorite sushi restaurant!

The fish is very fresh and delicious, however they packed so much of this basil in each roll it was all you could taste. This is how much I pulled out of probably 3 pieces of sushi. Very unfortunate, definitely a let down!

Really good sushi! Their special maki rolls are unique and use ingredients like thinly sliced lemon that I wouldn’t normally expect, yet don’t overpower the flavor. We especially liked the nigiri, each include a unique garnish that enhances the taste of the fish. The king salmon nigiri was the best I’ve had anywhere. Goes without saying that all the fish was flavorful and tasted fresh. We’ll be coming back soon!

We became big fans of the owner Alex! We visited here by chance but had a great experience with his exclusive maki, nigiri, sashimi and all his passion in his dishes. Every single piece has own flavor and get laced with his signature sauce which satisfied us so much. Also as you can see in pictures, every piece looks so sophisticated and when you try it, you can feel how harmonious the ingredients are

Delicious, clean, cozy, and lovely restaurant.

P.S. Please don't forget to try tacos as well!

This our hands down go to place now. Since Oishi in Chestnut Hill closed we haven't been able to find a place that is on its level nearby but Sushico really is. The rolls are very creative and there are many things on the menu that are a little rare like Black Bass. The staff is great and the owner Alex is very nice and checks in with everyone. He clearly loves what he does and that comes through in the food. Nigiri is one piece per order so make sure you remember that. Make sure you get a reservation.

It is an irony that they sell asian cuisine but most discriminating people here is asian.
If you are asian you will know and feel what I am talking about.
I try to be fair. The food was good. I hate to write a bad review. Probably this is my first or second review on google at all. I personally enjoy to try various new restaurants in Newton. And Sushico. was the place I wanted to try this time with my family. When we went in the restaurant around 7 pm. There was surprisingly not many tables occupied maybe 4-5 tables max. When we entered the restaurant the two or three serving crews starring at us but no one paid attention to approach us. They just let us wait at least three minutes. You get such an impression that they totally alienate you. And finally one young guy came to us and ask if we had reservation while we didn’t. He went back to ask to his manager and coming back to us a couple of minutes later. So we had to stand and wait in the middle of restaurant for several minutes. And finally we got a table next to entrance. And one guy came to us and dropped the menus without explaining of any and disappeared in such a rude and looking down attitude. I don’t want to describe everything here. But these people working in this restaurant are unbelievably discriminating attitude. It is so sad to experience in our Newton such a people exists.

Sushico is a new sushi restaurant in Newton Center. The restaurant itself is spacious yet cozy. They did a beautiful job with the layout and decor. The owner was extremely welcoming and introduced himself to my friend and I and made some great recommendations for food and drink choices. We started with the sesame noodles and the salmon tacos. Both are great choices! I was highly impressed with the flavor of the tacos, so impress we ordered a second round! The noodles were also divine. We then ordered the salmon Tataki and it was like butter, literally melts in your mouth. You can tell by the taste and texture of the food that they only use the freshest fish. I honestly want to go back again as soon as I can, the food was that good!

Was traveling to Boston for work and had a chance to hit Sushico with a friend and glad I did. This might be the best sushi I ever remember having. The chef/owner couldn't have been nicer and clearly takes pride in the food and the place - it isn't easy to make sushi "interesting" without bleeding into being "too overwhelming for the fish" but somehow this place does it. My only regret is that I'm from out of town and can't go more, but next time I'm in Boston this will be my first food stop. Food is great, place is cool and feels comfortable, good beers...great place.

What more can I say other than this is one of the best, perhaps the best, sushi I've ever experienced. Sushi Experience №161

I... was not impressed. Bizarre. There was obviously a lot of effort and technique put into the food here, but I don't think anything really left an impression. The premise of this place is to be "less pretentious and more authentic", and the shirts say "More Sushi, Less Drama", and that phrasing stuff actually kind of irritated me. If this place were unpretentious and authentic, it would be like Avana Sushi in Boston back in the day, where a single chef served you the best sushi you've ever eaten on styrofoam plates next to a cell phone kiosk. This is just a really upscale place that looks more like a wine tasting joint inside.

All that said, I did not hate the food by any means. It was all alright. Worth like $300? No, absolutely not. If your net worth is in the seven digits? Money is meaningless to you anyway, so have at it.

Overall this place does accomplish its actual goals though: serving beautiful, instagram-worthy food and impressing bougie white people.

The sushi was fine but the overall experience was underwhelming. We waited for a significant amount of time after seated for essentially everything, water, drinks, appetizer.. . We had a question about the difference between the two Chef Choice options on the menu and two wait staff couldn't tell us what the difference was.

The Chef Choice experience was just OK. Instead of serving one sushi/dish at a time, the rolls and sushi were served all together not dissimilar from a typical "sushi dinner" entrée. Not the end of the world, but it chipped away from the traditional Omakase experience. To make matters worse, the young man who served our food accidentally brushed at his finger on our sushi. Regarding the food, the sushi was decent but we were not fans of the rolls that contained basil that essentially overpowered the fish /rice.

I think this place is grossly overpriced. Some sushi we tried were very good though, but some were not. We tried their $100 chefs choice and it was a mistake. Small plates were better. Overall we spent over $200 for four people and felt that we could have had much better quality for this amount.

[+] POSITIVES
• The location is good, and street/lot parking was available for us on a Saturday night
• Decor is nice and music wasn’t too loud
• House special rolls were tasty

[–] NEGATIVES
• The food took too long to arrive. We arrived before half the restaurant, but by the time the food came out our tea was cold.
• Although tasty, the flavors were a bit too complicated for my taste. The Martha’s Vineyard has coriander and shiso, but the shiso is rolled up at the middle, which overpowered the rest of the maki. Wanted to see less sauce on the menu
• A tad on the expensive side

The food being late was a shame. My wife wanted to order more, but we decided against it because we didn’t want to risk waiting more.

I'm afraid I am spoiled now and no other sushi restaurant will compare.

I've been eating sushi for 30 years now, and hands down the best yellowtail nigiri I've ever had was here! The fish was fresh and flavorful, the cut was perfect and generous, and Alex paired it uniquely with just a touch of truffle to bring out the umami.

We had a range of different rolls, from traditional to unique. They were quite good, and Alex was quite interested in our feedback so that he could adjust a new roll that hadn't yet made the menu cut.

His unique take on seaweed salad, includes adding quinoa to absorb the flavors of the seasonings which was brilliant. No seaweed salad out of a bucket with a little chopped cucumber here!

I was only in Newton for a week, but I went twice and most definitely intend to frequent this magnificent restaurant the next time I come into town.
