Your Tropical Oasis in the heart of Boston's South End serving sushi, tropical cocktails, and bar bites.
Cocktails get 5 stars, food is a 4.5. The menu is pretty limited for people who are vegetarian.
If you’re hungry, get the sandwiches like a burger and the chicken sandwich. Here’s the beak down:
- Tater tots are great and a successful fusion
- Wagyu skewers are good, very small
- Veggie sushi was good
- Crab Rangoon was standard
- Dan Dan noodles were good, but it’s a COLD noodle. Beware
- Hamburger and chicken sandwiches were great

I recently visited Shore Leave, and it was an unforgettable experience! The Halloween theme was perfectly executed, with eerie decorations that set the mood without being over-the-top.
Our bartender, Ian, truly made the evening special. He crafted an incredible Halloween-themed cocktail that was both visually stunning and delicious. It had just the right balance of flavors, with a hint of spice that perfectly complemented the festive atmosphere.
The food was equally impressive. Each sushi roll was fresh and creatively presented, showcasing a variety of flavors that left us wanting more. The attention to detail in both the presentation and taste was remarkable.
Overall, Shore Leave is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique dining experience. Ian’s cocktail making skills and the delicious food made it a night to remember!

While the drinks and atmosphere were a standout, the food was a bit underwhelming. The Asian fusion dishes were solid but lacked the wow factor that would make them truly memorable. While it's a great place to grab a drink and enjoy the atmosphere, diners seeking exceptional cuisine might want to explore other options.

Visited on a Monday evening around 7 PM with 4 guests and no reservation. Restaurant was full and were not able to get a table until 9 PM. Found separate seats at the bar and eventually moved to be with our group.
Ordered several drinks, apps, and rolls. Everything was delicious! Our server/bartender was such a friendly, attentive young man - he gave great food/beverage recommendations and even let us sample some rums/gave breakdown of their differences. Interior decor is so fun, festive.
▪︎Golden Child Cocktail - so yummy!
▪︎Shore Leave - tangy
▪︎Selkie's Scream - light & classic
▪︎Hereditary Harvest - Yum!
▪︎Daiquiri - unlike any we've had before & so beautifully made!
▪︎Tater Tots - Very good (though would've asked to remove the tuna flakes if I paid closer attention)
▪︎Veg Gyzos - complimentary from the staff & they were SO good (sauce was delicious)
▪︎Vegetarian Roll - decent/refreshing
▪︎Pesto Roll - unique & husband loved it
Overall, would highly recommend visiting for drinks & good. Make a reservation if you can.

I was really impressed by this place. My goal was just to get drinks, but ended up by sushi rolls & crab Rangoon. The vibe there was really nice. They got like 4 bathrooms which is nice if you really got to go hahah. The place is clean , service was great, and food was amazing

Came for dinner with a friend. Their dishes are small plates to share style, no dish seemed substantial enough to be a main dish, due to size or content. The flavors were standard Asian fusion.
Majority of their menu are centered around sushi but their fish quality isn’t the best and the rice in the sushi roll we ordered was mushy. The salmon sashimi especially had a fishy aftertaste.
I enjoyed their tater tots, its flavor profile highly assembled takoyaki. The wagyu skewer was also nice, you can taste it’s done on a charcoal grill but the meat was very lean, no marbling at all, so maybe a low grade wagyu.
The restaurant was initially a bit confusing to get to as you see the restaurant front door from outside but when you open it, it leads to a stairway with no clear labeling that the restaurant is in the basement. There’s no cell reception but they do provide free WiFi and the actual restaurant ambiance is nice and trendy.
Our waitress was the most attentive, she made our dining experience really enjoyable! This would be a good place for a light bite in the afternoon before dinner, but probably not a dinner place especially if you’re coming for the sushi offerings. Likely explained how the restaurant was mostly empty around dinner hours, tho we came during a weekday.

Super fun basement bar with a funky atmosphere. The nigiri and sushi were phenomenal and the drinks were fun and pretty good. Highly recommend doing the chef selection nigiri if you have someone with you as they give you two of each piece. Some of the drinks come in fun glasses like one we ordered in a conch shell! We could not stop ordering food so the tab ended up being high but the prices are actually a great value in my opinion.

Overall, a pleasant experience. Enjoyed the dan dan noodles and Green Machine roll the most. Our server was great. Suggestions: flimsy paper menus are not it 😬. Invest in some nice menus.
The thing that really dragged it down for me was the 4% "fare wage and wellness fee" added to our bill. Spent over $500 here amongst a group of seven. Pay your employees more instead of charging the customers random fees! It's also not transparent what we're even paying for. Won't be returning.

Dropped in on a Saturday night and it was too crowded to really appreciate. Long wait for drinks, which were strong but small for the price. They really focus on the tiki Instagram vibes, lots of little touches. Some ridiculous system for reserving stools at the bar, seriously. Younger trendy crowd. There's a sushi counter but it seems like an afterthought

We visited Shore Leave for an event which was a part of Boston Rum Week. Through this tasting event, we got the chance to interact with so much of the staff, including some amazing bartenders. Not only were the drinks tasty but the people were kind and personable. I only had a single sushi roll but it was delicious. I’d previously been to Shore Leave years ago, and the food then was great, too. Excited to come back!

Aug. 2024: Haley consistently goes above and beyond to make every dining experience exceptional. Despite not visiting for a few months, she remembered us & even our favorite drinks! Haley is hilarious (with great energy) & hands-down makes every visit amazing! Thanks again, Haley!!
Feb. 2024: Haley delivered exceptional service last week. Her upbeat personality is infectious and added a delightful touch to the excellent service she provided. She consistently checked on our table, surpassing all expectations. Thank you, Haley!
Oct. 2023: Samantha R. served us recently and delivered exceptional service! She was friendly, offered valuable recommendations & consistently checked on our table, meeting all expectations!
However, my 1st experience in Oct. '22 was far from pleasant. The 2 bartenders were discourteous and inattentive. We had to actively signal them over to our side of the bar (we were sitting @ the small square bar too). Maybe reserving a table is to answer, instead of sitting at the bar... Either way, Samantha R. changed my opinion and I will be returning.

I have tried to like the sushi here so many times because the atmosphere is so fun and the drinks are cute, but every time I get sushi, I am generally left disappointed. Please for the love of sushi, stop using whatever brown rice is used in every roll. It is unequivocally bad and feels like eating pebbles. The brussels are likely the only item on the food menu worth getting.

Miso soup was so salty, which we told the server about. we complained about the pineapple breadpudding dessert that the coconut tasted nothing like coconut at all, they then our server came back only went to correct us that they gave us coconut ice cream- did it not occur to them they couldve made a mistake and scooped the vanilla instead- we didn't feel heard at all - and we didn't finish it, obv killed the vibe. they didn't take it off our check nor maybe they shoulve just gave us a coconut ice cream scoop on the side- that was disappointing. I was really excited to come here. Thank god the sushi was yummy.

My experience at Shore Leave was stellar. Choosing the Omakase option at Shore Leave was a spectacular choice, as for the price, it is a fantastic option for those who are willing to explore into different tastes and experiences. Vincent, the chef behind the Omakase counter, was diligent and experienced, offering insights on each of the dishes on the Omakase menu. I’d highly recommend being under his care, as he was patient with my questioning and left me excited to return once more should I choose Omakase. Chaz was a wonderful server who took care of me wonderfully; with their assistance, I tried a sake I would not have normally tried as per her recommendation. Had I chosen myself, I would have never made an attempt at it— but I did with Chaz’ recommendation and I greatly enjoyed it! If you are willing to spend a bit more, you will be pleased beyond measure. Go to the Omakase counter and you won’t regret it! The only reason I lack pictures is because I simply enjoyed it too much to put my phone down!

Shore Leave in Boston is a vibrant restaurant offering Asian-inspired dishes and an array of tiki cocktails, all served in a fun and lively atmosphere.
The friendly and attentive staff add to the welcoming environment, though the cozy size of the restaurant means you might find yourself in close quarters with other diners. However, the inclusive vibe, particularly their support for the LGBTQ+ community, creates a warm and inviting ambiance which is great.
We started with the Dan Dan Noodles, which though not quite traditional, offered a peanut-infused twist. Might have called this dish Peanut Noodles or something though. The Tuna Tartare was not bad, but it was the Okonomiyaki Tater Tots that was incredible! The Karaage Chicken Sandwich was delicious and shareable if you ask!
For dinner I opted for the Shore Leave Roll, a combination of shrimp tempura, hamachi, pickled pineapple, serrano, cilantro, and aji amarillo. While the sushi was good quality, it is slightly on the higher end at $20 a roll. The Eggplant Dragon Roll was very creative and tasty. Only thing is we would have liked more sushi options to choose from for the menu.
As for the cocktails, they're as colorful as they are creative, with themed options changing with the seasons and holidays. We enjoyed the experience and look forward to returning to sample more of what Shore Leave has to offer! Thanks for a wonderful evening!

(Also, I saw some reviews for No Relation here - that’s a separate omakase/sushi restaurant. Literally no relation to Shore Leave 🤣)

Came here to check out what all the fuss was about. We had such a great time! The Christmas decorations and music were fantastic. The service was above and beyond, so friendly. The food itself was phenomenal. We did the chef's nigiri tasting and it was a great selection, better than what we could have picked out for ourselves. We also had the spicy tuna rilland it was amazing. I cannot believe I have paid the same price, if not higher, for worse rolls. The drinks were also delicious and so cute. Definitely plan to come back here in the future and try the other rolls!

Love the decorations but the “bar” vibe is just not there. They don’t even let you sit at the bar stools unless you have your name on the list. This just gives is a very sterile clinical feel and doesn’t feel like a real bar.
Feel they’re prioritizing non-personal turnover and profit over creating a good atmosphere.

Visited in mid Nov 2023. Booked the Omakase and sat at small (6 person) sushi bar. Food was ok. In my opinion, not worth the $85/pp. It didn't meet my expectations from the reviews and tiktoks i saw prior to visting . Atmosphere was just ok too. I love Halloween and sushi so when I came across Shore Leave's "Scare Leave" and Omakase, I couldn't resist booking it for our anniversary! Loved the decor going down the stairs into the dining area. Even the bathrooms in the back were decorated with all the spooky vibes.
Unfortunately I made a mistake and didn't realize that the omakase was on a separate reservation system so I just ended up making regular dinner reservations. :( We ordered food off the menu and enjoyed most of what we got.
The Tuna Tartare was great and we loved the taro chips that accompanied it. Okonomiyaki Tater Tots were delicious and so saucy! Would love to see an option to add seafood to it to give it some more texture. The Wagyu Skewers were overcooked and a little burnt so that was a bummer! We enjoyed everything else though and even received complimentary shots. :) service from the hostess and our server were great throughout the night.

Wanted to give this place a higher rating but the hostesses are super rude and unprofessional. Went for dinner last week and there were open tables but they refuse to give us a table saying they were all reserved and full. Ok no big deal right? Except there were a ton of open reservations online for that time and all the times that night so made a reservation online. Guess what? They still refused to seat us saying that they didn’t know if other people would show up. Huh? Isn’t that what reservations are for?
Went to the bar and suddenly the bartender was able to get us a table. Makes no sense but it seemed he didn’t think highly of the hostess either.

The Omekase was excellent and fun, but don't expect a serene experience. Even on a weeknight the bar area is very crowded, and the Omekase counter is right in the middle of the action. Pretty flawless food experience though.

This place was AMAZING! I went there for a 12 course omakase, and had a great experience. The chef was very personable and explained what each item was. I will say with full confidence, I had a better omakase experience here, then I did at Nobu. It was worth the trip to Boston, and I will definitely be back!!!

My friend and I went during their Halloween celebration Scare Leave. It was super crowded, but we were able to find two open chairs at the bar relatively quickly. If you’re going for a special event, definitely make a reservation unless you have a small party.
The vibes are great. They had lots of fun decorations matching the pirate theme. The bartender was super nice. My friend and I were talking about different restaurants, and I kept forgetting the name of certain places, but the bartender would interject with the name. Honestly, a G.
I got Ahuizotl's Conquest, a cocktail that didn’t have a strong taste other than pure alcohol.
Food wise, I also got the okonomiyaki tater tots which were fine but didn’t taste particularly like okonomiyaki. For my main meal, I got the shiitake tempura roll which wasn’t too bad. The tempura was quite crispy, and there were enough rolls that I was satisfied.

Sooooo good!!! I honestly didn’t have high hopes for this place, came here just for the scare leave event and drinks, idk why just didn’t expect much, IT WAS SO GOOD!!! I can’t speak on authenticity but the karaage chicken sandwich, red curry shrimp roll and the gyoza….omg. So freaking delicious. We are from Michigan and I am so sad I won’t be able to visit this place more often!! But it will be on our list of stops next time we’re in Boston :)

This is one of the best value omakase experiences you can get. Not only is $85 a steal for any actual omakase experience with a sushi dedicated to you for 45min, I thought the selection of dishes/sushis provided in the 12 course selection were creative and delicious. Our chef was incredibly professional, kind, hospitable and gave us an overall incredible experience. Top favorites were the akami with pickled wasabi and hamachi with truffle. But every piece was great. Buttery scallops, excellently prepared mackerel with a great pop of aji amarillo, and even Wagyu skewers. Everything was so great that I thought the fatty tuna was one of the less impressive pieces in this omakase which is something I can’t believe I’m saying. Every piece was thoughtful and wonderful. We got sake and gave a generous tip and paid ~$250 for 2 people. You won’t find a better value omakase style experience (you’re seated in front of a sushi chef focused on you) with such a flavorful spread in Boston.

I should write a review on how bad this place is so no one will go here and I can get a table. But This place is amazing, everything is great, the staff, the food, the drinks, the atmosphere. I tried No Relation (intimate omakase in a back room at Shore Leave) before trying the food in the main Shore Leave, and I have to say I prefer the more casual Shore Leave! No Relation is the same fish (same kitchen) but with some more premium ingredients like truffle and caviar which are ok but I’m more about the fish.
We sat at the bar and our bartender was unobtrusive yet friendly as we watched him craft unique Halloween-themed cocktails (writing this in October) that were tasty and of just-right proof.
The food was outstanding and one can tell they use very high quality fish. I particularly recommend the crab California roll with real crab and the fatty tuna nigiri which melts in your mouth and has a hit of yuzu kosho dabbed underneath.
The bartender informed us that they now have an $85 omakase which recently launched (fall 2023), and I’m planning to come back to try it. Great atmosphere, fresh and high quality sushi, and fun cocktails: a spot worth checking out!

Definitely not worth the money as there are far better Omakase's in the city. Majority of the dishes were definitely solid but now exceptional or wow by any means. Most Omakases find a way to really elevate the fish or highlight the natural flavor, most of what we were served was pretty neutral or bland. The experience is good though, very friendly and accommodating, had a lot of fun there.

The service was extremely slow. It took a long time to be asked for our drink orders, and once we had the first round of food ordered, we were never checked on. We planned on getting another roll and dessert but changed our minds. I would have been more understanding had someone said anything at all about the slow service, but no one acknowledged it. To top it off, the sushi was just okay. I can’t recommend this place.

We came for drinks and they were out of a drink some how. Then asked for a Moscow mule and he loaded it with ginger beer and then added soda water. This bartender doesn’t know how to make a drink at all. My dog could have made a better Moscow mule blindfolded than him. #layofftheginger

Love, love, love Shore Leave! The cocktails and food are delicious and the people working here are all very knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. They are very sensitive to anyone with food allergies, we were asked as soon as we sat down, again when we ordered, and they even clarified again once or twice after that since we had a couple of folks with allergies at our table. Love this place for a date night (karaoke on Tuesdays!) but especially fun for a night out with the girls.
Parking is also fairly easy for the south end but just be careful about the roads around the restaurant if you are driving in. It’s easy to wind up on 93 if you’re not familiar with the proper lanes / one ways in this area. Welcome to Boston!

Great Boston tiki bar! Milo was awesome behind the bar and explained some of the unique liquors on the menu today. The Shore Leave was an automatic winner, can never go wrong with passion fruit. Dim the Lights was an excellent coupe cocktail, not bitter but not too sweet. Desert Blush was a great cocktail with margarita vibes and a different sweetness.

The food - lots of delicious sharing apps, excellent sushi and a variety of burgers is excellent and sure to please for a nibble or a big meal with plenty of variety. The drinks - many served in cool pottery mugs are really good and we tried several of the most popular. The crowd is young and hip for the most part - not a tourist place at all. This is really worth a visit. It’s in the Ink Block area and owned by the folks who own Bar Mezzana so you know they know what they’re doing : )) Check it out. We will definitely be back soon.

Hands down one of the best dining experiences of my life. In every aspect the staff went above and beyond my expectations.

Visited Shore Leave on a work trip to Boston and I cannot say enough good things about the atmosphere, staff, and food. We came for the sushi (vegetarian options available!) and drinks and ended up staying for the disco ball and Tuesday night karaoke. Our server was Chris and he was one of the best servers we ever had. Made great recommendations, took great care of us, and even ended up singing a song with us as we closed out the night. I don’t usually right reviews, but this place was worth the effort and it’ll be worth your effort to visit and have a fun night.

Crowded, trendy but honestly a bit kitschy. It took 20+ minutes to get seated with a reservation so they offered us drinks before… where we waited at the bar for 10 minutes until the hostess helped us out. They did comp the drinks and they were tasty and fun, though nothing special. Food was mediocre including the sushi. Experience would have to be a lot better to want to eat in a basement in ink block again…

Horrible service, cute spot. Not worth the price. So many better spots, don't waste your time here.

Visited with friends. Didn't know what to expect, you know Sushi is one of those food items that you either get right or thebplave mess up your Sushi experience. We ordered multiple Sushi options to try almost all that they offer including the eggplantSushi, crazy, right. We all liked the different variations, they all tasted delicious and were well made. I liked the tuna, shrimp, salmon, and egg plant variations. My friends ordered wings but I didn't try them. They however, seem to enjoy them since they ordered a second round.
Asbtou get into the restaurant, toubare like this is in the basement so you statt to feel nervous about what to exodxt but ince toivare inside the atmosphere was great. Loved it. Don't mind going there again.
Sorry, forgot to take pictures this time.

MILO MADE OUR DRINKS FAST AND TASTEFUL, CREATED A DRINK FOR THE MEN IN MY GROUP, CALLED ''THE CHICHI''
WHICH IN MY OPINION SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE MENU!!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ALL! GREAT STAFF, GREAT VIBES, GREAT ATMOSPHERE. WILL BE COMING BACK! THANK YOU MILO!!

Hands down best place for drinks in Boston (proper) that I've found so far. They change their drink menu frequently, but it always has several unique options, all of which are great. Get Query's Rum Manhattan, if they offer it.
For food, get the Okonomiyaki Tater Tots. Their sushi offerings are also great. Have not yet had their other menu options (burgers, chicken sandwiches) but they of course also look good.

Low key obsessed with this place. I wish i had found out about it sooner bc the Santa tiki decorations are gone after Dec 31. Boston was in need of a Santa tiki bar and I don’t know how you can top this place. Everything was top notch - hostess, waiter, service, decor, food, drinks and ambiance. The drinks were fun, the sushi melts in your mouth, and the desserts are as if they came from the North Pole. Highly recommend and will def go back next Christmas!

Food
I was mainly coming for drinks and expecting average bar food, but the food was not bad at all. Of course, the drinks were amazing.
Everything else
The ambiance was very festive. They decorated the whole place with Christmas lights and decorations, and even had the table covered changed to Christmas patterns.

Surprisingly good food and excellent sushi! We live nearby and always thought of it as a cocktails-driven spot, but luckily, we dropped in for dinner when our usual go-to sushi place was closed. The food is really good here! The gyoza were perfectly charred and tender with a delicious, not-too-sweet dipping sauce. The sushi was outstanding. We only ordered nigiri, and every bite was fresh with a nice flavor balance. I usually do not order platters or sets, but gave the sushi platter a go. The madai and iwana were standouts! Our server, Christopher, was super friendly and sweet. I'm just taking off one star because while the kitschy Christmas decor is really cute, the strobing lights gave me a headache and at times, we had to wait quite a bit for our food, drink or server to appear. It was a Tuesday night. Would definitely come back!

Our server, Sydney, was A M A Z I N G. This was the best experience I've ever had. The food, the atmosphere, the service - everything was exceptional. Truly one of a kind. The cuisine was wonderful and imaginative, the drinks superb, but it really was Sydney that made it an *unforgettable* experience. This was our first time at Shore Leave and it's my new favorite restaurant in the world. Thank you Sydney and the Shore Leave staff! !

Wow! While this bar has been here for four years, it’s in a new party of town that I’m not familiar with. Our bartender, Bird, was INCREDIBLE! They got us taken care of at every opportunity they possibly could have.
We ordered Gyoza, Tuna Tartare, each of us got burger and I got a wagyu beef skewer. The food was melt in your mouth good- quite pricey but a REAL treat.
We were here for their Halloween decorations which I dearly loved. Think skeleton at a pool party. Really great for fancy dates or just treating yourself- you deserve this!
A little loud and also down a few flights of stairs if we’re talking negatives. I recommend sitting at the bar!

Terrible and rude server, literally blew us off so many times whether ordering drinks or even to pay (a person at our table was feeling unwell and we wanted to leave). Rude about even little stuff like food allergies which was off putting. Took 30mins to take our order and then another 20-25 to get them. Would not recommend

Was here for “scare” leave. Def rec reservations. Service was so kind and quick. The food is mostly small plates, all are good. Def rec the sushi, particularly they had an amazing mushroom roll (if you like mushrooms). The drinks were interesting and the vibe was great on a early Saturday night.

I love Tiki bars! One of only a few Tiki Bars in Boston!

The atmosphere was very nice, and the drinks were creative (as well as quite strong). However, we ordered many dishes that fell short of the mark. The burger, tots, and tuna tartare were all pretty good. But the other dishes were not palatable. Particularly the gochujang wings and the claypot. The claypot was suuuuper overloaded with vinegar and just tasted weird. The small dish with short sides it was served in also made it difficult to mix up (and it's presented like bibimbap-where you need to mix it). The wings also had a strange tasting sauce and the quality of chicken wasn't great.

Came here for a quick birthday dinner with some friends, and I was presently surprised!
It’s tucked away in a side street, down several flights of stairs (you will most certainly lose cell service). Once you go through a narrow fire door, you’ll be greeted with an amazing transformation in atmosphere. Kudos to the designers, you did an outstanding job!
The drinks, while certainly pricey, are poured on the strong side and well mixed. The bartenders are also a treat to chat with.
The food is hands down some of the best I’ve had in a while. We ordered a Claypot Rice to share and it was gone within minutes. The wagyu was not too fatty, and the crab was so well mixed into the fried rice, that every bite had a good helping of crab in it.
The sushi, in my opinion, blows Fin’s out of the water. This is my new favorite “elevated” sushi bar. Definitely will be coming here again!
