Blue Ribbon Sushi is a vibrant Japanese restaurant and sushi bar located near Fenway Park in Kenmore Square, serving outstanding Japanese cuisine based in tradition and passion, including nigiri, sashimi, and chef-crafted maki rolls, all made with a selection of fresh fish flown in daily from the Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean, and local New England waters. The sushi bar selections are complimented by grilled mains including A5 Wagyu offerings.
Our curated beverage list features a variety of sake selections, Japanese micro-brews, wines from California and Europe, premium Japanese whiskey and an assortment of imaginative house cocktails.
There's a unique atmosphere with good food and an interesting interior at Blue Ribbon Sushi. While a bit pricey and limited in seating, the quality of the sushi is excellent. The tempura was perfectly fried, sauces were well-balanced, and all the sushi and sashimi were expertly prepared and presented. Great for seafood lovers with the wallet to support their more expensive appetites.
Full Review:
Stepping into Blue Ribbon Sushi in Boston at night, you're immediately struck by the dim lighting and the unique interior design, which sets a cozy and intimate atmosphere. While the restaurant is not large and seating can be a bit limited, it adds to the overall charm and exclusivity of the place.
The menu at Blue Ribbon Sushi is focused on high-quality seafood, particularly sushi and sashimi. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of the food more than justifies it. The tempura, for example, was perfectly battered and fried to a crispy perfection, without being greasy. The sauces accompanying the dishes were flavorful and complemented the seafood without overpowering it.
The sushi and sashimi selection was impressive, with each piece expertly cut and beautifully presented. The freshness of the ingredients was evident in every bite, and it's clear that the chefs at Blue Ribbon Sushi take great care in sourcing and preparing their seafood.
While dining at Blue Ribbon Sushi may not be an everyday indulgence for most due to the prices, it is certainly worth it for a special occasion or a treat. If you're a seafood lover looking for top-notch sushi in Boston and don't mind splurging a bit, Blue Ribbon Sushi is a fantastic choice.

By far one of the best sushi spots in the Northeast. The quality of the fish is excellent, and each of the special cut pieces are so unique and delicious. The apps are sharable and the platters are a great way to try multiple styles of sushi. And the sake is incredible, if you've never had sake or are new to it, highly suggest trying the unfiltered sakes. The flavor of everything was so good, and while pricey, is definitely worth it.

Came here for a first date. Glad I planned ahead to make a reservation because it was pretty crowded on a Friday night. I Loved the semi-underground ambiance with mellow lighting in the dining room and accent lights highlighting the sushi bar. We got lucky with the seating arrangements that allowed us to sit next to eachother rather than across. For food, we ordered the seared scallops appetizer an array of individual nigiri pieces and a couple of sushi rolls. Starting with the scallops, this was the highlight of the meal for me. I loved the meaty flavor and buttery texture that was perfectly balanced with a subtle level of seasoning with the sear. We then moved onto the nigiri, which I felt the quality of the sushi fish felt right for the price. It was fun to try the different varieties of fish. And finally the sushi rolls we got were yummy. It really stuck out to me that this was better than your average sushi experience when I realized how much tastier the rolls are with a higher filling to rice ratio.
In summary, I’d definitely save this place on your list of sushi to try in Boston for the diversity of options on the menu and the beautiful dining area. But, do expect to pay a pretty penny for the level of quality and service.
Also note this place is connected to the lobby of the commonwealth hotel but also accessible from the street for reference.

Blue Ribbon Sushi has had a lot of hype since it opened. Naturally, it was on my bucket list, yet something always came up. But after so long, I finally got a chance to try it. And I was really impressed with the food, decor, and service. The Crispy Rice is delicious, and I love sushi places that serve you on a board. Great attention to detail. I did go during lunch, which is slower, so that gave me more personal time. Only thing is that I would knock it for is that this place is super expensive. Their sushi deluxe is almost $50, twice the price of most regular spots (they give you a credit for the roll you get with the pieces). Even the crispy rice is almost $30 for an app. But it is in a great location, and the space is beautiful—I feel it's worth it every once in awhile to splurge or for a date. I hear dinner is always busy. Also, super clean bathrooms. So I'll be back. Always good to have a consistent place

A high-end restaurant with authentically enthusiastic and knowledgeably helpful staff! Fast, attentive service without a hint of 'pushiness'. Full explanation and exquisite presentation of the food served. Tastefully well-designed modern decor. Comfortably lively atmosphere (pleasing background music playing at just the right volume, fellow patrons collectively not quiet but not too loud, all seeming to also enjoy themselves). Substantial portions of sushi (not thin-sliced like other places). The rice was a bit softer and more cohesive than other sushi restaurants (more 'gourmet'?), which I enjoyed, since I prefer sushi thoroughly soaked in the teriyaki/wasabi without it falling apart between the chopsticks. Cocktail mixed to perfection. Genuinely warm and mutually appreciative smiles with the staff upon finally leaving. Highest marks! I will definitely visit again and again!

What a gem! I didn’t expect this place to have such a nice vibe and decor. All the wooden accents that they have and the nice sushi bar setup add a really authentic touch to the place. Also the way they serve the sushi on a wooden tray makes it a much more enjoyable experience than the usual ceramic plates. I got around 10 maki pieces and they were delicious! The rice was very soft and moist, the seaweed wrap was not chewy at all, and the fish tasted very fresh! I also got a seaweed side salad (which in my opinion can be shared by 2 people) and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this place whether it’s for a night out with friends or a date! Though I would try to get a table in the area where the sushi bar is because the further you go inside the more isolated you feel, but still enjoyable! I would say that the service was a bit slow but I think it was understandable when you factor in the large amount of people, the quality and presentation of the dishes, and the care they put into them.

GREAT SUSHI PLACE. The food was so fresh and so tasty. The fish was unbelievably flavorful, as was the house salad. My only complaint would be the price, but I think it is worth the pocket pain.

A decent sushi place, quantity and quality is good for the price point (for example, in comparison to Uni). Tho nothing really stood out in terms of flavor profile or presentation that triggered the will to put this place in my Boston Japanese restaurant list (for example, in comparison to Zuma). The restaurant’s fairly busy on a Friday night, but everyone’s attentive. Their cocktails were not that good, but it could be personal preferences, tried lychee martini, was overly heavy and sweet, and the last one on the cocktail list, it just tasted like ginger beer, couldn’t taste anything else, almost like no alcohol in it. Liked their hot sake tho.

Best meal I had in Boston (out of 7 total) but have no desire to return. The fish is good but not amazing. Lots of disco maki’s that made the kids happy. Friendly and attentive staff. The decor is attractive but the restaurant felt listless despite being busy. Overall the food is just not special enough to warrant the preposterous price tag and there is no vibe to speak of.

I had the pleasure of dining here for my birthday this past week. The interior decoration is absolutely gorgeous and I love the traditional Japanese designs. Notably, this place is not cheap, in fact VERY STEEPLY priced, however for the occasion and service that came along with it I believe it was well worth it. The waiters were all extremely friendly and approachable. During my dinner, I could tell that our server had over heard us talking about the steep prices and without hesitation, he gave us his personal favorite dish on the house for no reason at all. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Captain there, Arm. I told him how much I loved the food and the décor and he said to me that his vision for the restaurant was to create a traditional and homey Japanese atmosphere. Overall, this was such a memorable dining experience and I will definitely be returning here in the future.

The best omakase you can get under $100 per person in Boston. I'm just mentioning the sub-$100 part so I don't compare it with any extremely expensive sushi places that I'm not aware of.

Well, the sushi was excellent. And you'll see fish you rarely see anywhere else. My complaint? It's SUPER expensive. Sure, there's 3 (4?) types or toro, but as much as $18 for ONE piece. Sake was also pricey.

Stopped in for a late night cocktail. Very quaint location accessible from Hotel Commonwealth. The bar is small, but well stocked with a large variety of Japanese Whiskies. Asked the bartender to steer me in the direction of a Macallan 12 and he took some liberties to put me into a much higher priced drink. I would go back to try the food.

Overall good experience 4/5.
1. Quality is good, but pieces sometimes cut unevenly.
2. Lighting is a bit too dark and uneven depending on table.
3. The reason why I deducted a star - Online menu is lower priced than actual menu, so spent significantly more than anticipated. For example the platter is $240 online but $280 in-person.

I heard good things about the restaurant and decided to have my birthday dinner yesterday there and it was beyond my expectations. The A5 Wagyu literally melts in your mouth and the wagyu gyozas were the best gyozas I ever had. The sushi was extremely good and you can tell that its as fresh as it can possibly be. Drinks were also really good, which I didn’t expect in a sushi place. Dessert was super good, we had different mochis and this kind of creme brule with matcha that was delicious. There are plenty different seating options to fit the dinner style you may want to have (sushi bar, table, booth and even a space for larger parties). The service was extremely kind and helpful. For transport you can just get the green line if you want to go by public transport and it’s by the entrance of the Kenmore station so really convenient if you are planning on having a few drinks, overall 10/10 restaurant.

Beautiful, atmospheric place with great sushi! The fish was quite literally soft like butter and melts in your mouth. I've never had fish that good! Sometimes sashimi is a bit slimy and chewy, but this was excellent. The sushi rice was perhaps a bit dry and bland.
Plenty of gluten free options, including GF soy sauce. The server was very knowledgeable on allergies.

Located inside Hotel Commonwealth and opened to the public. Recommend to make advance reservation for group of 4 or more during dinner time. It is spacious with multi-level. The entrance is a stair-down with dim light, so be careful. Dinner time is busy with four sushi chefs. Menue is comtemporary style. Tasty foods.

Good local option for authentic Japanese. Very good sushi. Unfortunately the hot kitchen was not working when we visited and we could only order sushi or sashimi. Of course, they didn't tell us this until we sat down. That showed lack of integrity so only 4 stars.

There wasn’t really anything about the menu that jumped out at me. For how highly ranked it was, I was expecting more creativity/ flair. I appreciated how fresh the food was and that it was high quality. I made a reservation and they put me in the back room where there was nobody else seated which was not ideal for an upbeat, lively restaurant. We would have much rather been a part of the action and I thought they should put the walk in people in the back over the people who has reserved well in advance. Overall, it was an enjoyable but very over priced for a standard dishes.

If I could give higher, I would. This spot was pick as a birthday dinner for me! It's right off the Kenmore T stop right on Comm Ave. Small but spacious it was overall just cute. I would recommend for a small group or date night. We started with sake both martini and hot for drinks. We were offered samples of other sakes offered and recommended they do a sake tasting! It was that good. Needless to say nothing else was added.
We started off with the wagyu gyoza which had a good balance of salt and spicy. The miso soup the miso on the side so you can control the flavor. We had the sushi and sashimi combo to start adding the blue ribbon lobster roll as an entrée. We also added a second selection of sushi and sashimi which were equally delicious. For dessert we opted for the green tea creme brulee, the chocolate bruno, and mochi. All I have to say is OMG.
All of the staff we interacted with were pleasant.

At lunch hour on Sunday there was no master chef. Overrated and overpriced for average sushi was how i felt from my experience, perhaps my expectation was too high from the reviews. Ordered deluxe sushi, spicy tuna Maki, spicy crab roll, ebi tempura roll, uni maine nigiri, dragon roll and we were still hungry, so added prime zabuton steak.
$42 Prime zabuton was appetizer size, with no rice or any sides, dry and too chewy.
$47 sushi deluxe came with clumsy roll and nigiri. Tuna Maki had big chunk of unpeeled cucumber like a stick instead of thin slices. Uni $24 for 2 pcs was very good though.
$26 dragon roll:Half the size of average Maki, with no toppings like roe except sprouts. They should call it eel avocado roll.
$17 crab roll: just bland crab.
Overall, everything had no flavor, even Wasabi and soy sauce.
Our server was yasashii and attentive, dining area and rest rooms were clean. Sigh..think this will be my last hunt for exceptional sushi restaurant in mass..😮💨

Staff gave us an overpriced bottle of water implying it was free but it was 8 dollars. Additionally, the sushi is overpriced and tastes like frozen store bought sushi. We were really unimpressed, and if you’re vegetarian your experience will be worse. They only have a few vegetarian options that only have one vegetable and they charge you 11 dollars for it. Definitely not worth, would recommend going next door to Tsurutontan for a much much better experience.
Visited 2 years ago
Do not go here if you’re vegetarian/vegan/do not eat fish. They charge $11-13 for veggie rolls with one ingredient and $1-2 for each added ingredient. Spending $35 on rice with avocado is not worth it. Also many of their other menu items we thought would be veg weren’t. Our server wasn’t exactly forthcoming with what was vegetarian (menu not labeled) and just recommended pricey items to us.
Also the lighting is very dim inside it was hard to see what you were eating.
I understand it’s a sushi place and sushi implies fish but I went for a friends party and thought that the vegetarian sushi would have more in it to reflect the prices or that they would at least have a reasonable amount of dishes I could eat.
For reference, we got edamame, tofu and seaweed (underwhelming and $15 for barely seasoned tofu?), cucumber sunomono (cucumber hadn’t even been soaked in the sauce), norimaki roll with avocado extra (decent but wayyyy too pricey), shiitake with cucumber (no flavor), and ume shiso (tasted like a sweet tart or super sour candy).
The experience for my fish eating friends seemed alright, but they also thought it was overpriced and have had better sushi elsewhere (shoutout to M sushi in NC).

Sushi for Boston!! I was so impressed with their quality of sushi. (Better than Zuma and Douzo haha) Of course I cannot deny its high price, but if you want to enjoy sushi not in a high-end omakase setting, this place is the best to enjoy sushi and sashimi. I liked the music they're playing and the atmosphere was awesome to enjoy the whole platter at that moment.
And I want to appreciate server's big smile when I enter and leave the restaurant.

Came here to celebrate my friend's birthday, and overall, it was a satisfying experience. While there were some ups and downs throughout the meal, the highlights made it a somewhat memorable celebration.
To start, we ordered the Yaki Sea Scallop. While it had a pleasing buttery texture, the flavor fell a bit short of expectations. It was enjoyable, but didn't quite deliver the wow factor we were hoping for. The Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken Wings also left something to be desired. The batter was slightly over-seasoned, making them a bit overpowering on their own. However, the dipping sauces provided a much-needed balance of tanginess and sweetness, redeeming the dish. Thankfully, the Toro Tartare was exceptional, and it paired beautifully with the salty seaweed.
Among the rolls, the Spicy Scallop Maki stood out as a personal favorite. The generous amount of buttery scallops and smelt roe created a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. It was a delicious and satisfying bite. On the other hand, the Blue Ribbon Maki, despite its expensive ingredients, failed to impress. It ended up being an average and overpriced roll that didn't live up to the upper-middle tier sushi spot reputation. The quality of the nigiri was also a bit underwhelming. While some pieces were decent, the standout was the Anago (sea eel) nigiri. It was incredibly tender, with a delicate sweetness that paired perfectly with the accompanying sauce.
At the end of our meal, our server surprised us with a small piece of chocolate mousse cake, a thoughtful gesture to celebrate the birthday. Though we were too full to fully enjoy it, we appreciated the gesture and the overall service provided throughout the evening.
Overall, Blue Ribbon Sushi offers a decent upgrade from typical neighborhood sushi spots, but it may not blow you away. While some dishes, like the Toro Tartare and the Spicy Scallop Maki, were exceptional, there were also average and underwhelming elements throughout the meal.

Delicious sushi if a bit expensive.

Located inside the side to the right of the hotel, it’s rather spacious inside. Service was great, very clean. They provide fresh sashimi and nigiri, but they don’t have necessarily special maki rolls. Just the basic ingredients that are simple enough to make the maki, nothing out of the ordinary. The butter miso scallop was rich in flavor but the chicken wings were a bit too crispy to my liking, kind of burnt.

If you’re looking for a pretty good sushi place to eat lots of sushi and have a good time with friends then this is the place for you.
Food: The sushi is excellent - the closest to an omakase experience in Boston. The rolls are incredible for this area. The crispy rice was on point as well! I could’ve eaten two portions of that easily! I highly recommend it.
Atmosphere: Great vibes! This place is trendy with low lighting - making for an intimate experience. The service staff are also personable and provide you with a lovely experience!
Price: $$$ - It is higher priced sushi but it’s pretty good. The drinks are expensive too but delicious and some are stronger so it’s worth it.
Parking: There is street parking here, however, it’s Boston and it’s crowded all the time!!

Staff are highly trained, polite and personable, fish is fresh and creatively put together, but the atmosphere could use some tweaking. Their sake list is impressive and likely the best hot sake I've had in decades. This will be my go to whenever I visit Kenmore or craving sushi.

Consistently delicious, great service, and cool room with the perfect jazz music in the background. One of my faves!

My wife and I recently had an exceptional time at a restaurant. Flynn and manager AJ provided the best customer experience, going above and beyond. It was the best meal of my life. The dishes were exquisite, with incredible flavors and artistic presentation. We ordered multiple Sushi Bar Specials and Chefs Specials. Flynn, our server, was knowledgeable, friendly and made great suggestions.
Manager AJ was delightful, ensuring a smooth evening.
The ambiance was perfect. Overall, it was an exceptional experience, surpassing our expectations. We highly recommend Blue Ribbon for an extraordinary dining experience.

The food was really good, even if my first experience there wasn’t the best, the manager itself took care of it in an excellent way. I went again and the experience was just amazing, the stuff and the manager are really nice and caring.

Food - portions are TINY overall, and the miso butter scallop tastes very buttery and are SMALL. For $24, you will taste buttered, tiny scallops that are THIN. Our group did not taste miso at all. All the rolls are called “maki” so that they can give you the tiniest pieces. Go to Tsuru ton tan next door for more reasonable priced rolls or other sushi restaurants for tasty japanese food
Service - We were there for less than an hour, because we felt very rushed. As we were finishing our food and drinks, the server came and asked if we are done eating. We answered "we are ready," and he said "ready to get out?" We were already feeling rushed, so it was overall a very unpleasant experience.
Price - Expect to pay premium sushi restaurant price ($100+) if you want to be full.

Went in for a lunch treat and was incredibly impressed. I got the chef’s sushi platter and an extra special golden perch sashimi. The platter was delicious: every nigiri was made excellently and the spicy tuna maki was to die for. But the perch (y’all the perch) was immaculate. The plating was a work of art, and the perch was perfectly sliced. It didn’t need soy, nor ginger- just a little dab on the lemon slice was all it took to amaze.
Definitely come here. This food is special.

My family and I were visiting Boston for the first time and stopped by Blue Ribbon Sushi on our last day. The food was obviously amazing, but our service from Flynn is what really set our experience apart! We’re a family well versed working in the service industry and Flynn has honestly been my favorite server I’ve ever had. He was extremely knowledgeable and seemed like he genuinely cared about us having the best experience possible. Thank you again, Flynn! If we’re ever back in Boston we will be stopping by here again!

When we first arrived, we couldn't find the actual entrance to the restaurant! A bit confusing, but we ended up entering through the hotel entrance. I believe there was one more entrance, but difficult to see! Overall sushi was good! In my opinion, maki and rolls were pretty standard, overall good. We ordered a dish from the sushi bar, crispy rice, and it was amazing!!! Definitely recommend that dish. Mochi ice cream at the end was also delicious!

I was thoroughly impressed with both the quality of the fish and the overall dining experience each and every time I have come to Blue Ribbon (I go there with friends or business meetings 1x per week if not more) . The prices at Blue Ribbon Sushi are simply fantastic, especially considering the top-notch quality of the seafood they serve. Compared to other high-end sushi restaurants in the area that I've dined at, such as O Ya, I found the dining experience at Blue Ribbon Sushi to be memorable. The atmosphere was more relaxed and comfortable, and the service was attentive without being overbearing and answered any questions you may have.
But what really sets Blue Ribbon Sushi apart is the quality of the fish. Each piece of sushi was expertly crafted and tasted absolutely sublime. I particularly enjoyed the Tuna. salmon, and a must try is the A5 Wagyu Nigiri which all were exceptionally fresh and flavorful.
Overall, I would highly recommend Blue Ribbon Sushi to anyone looking for a top-notch sushi with attentive staff and of course a reasonable price. It's simply one of the best sushi restaurants in town and a must-visit for any seafood lover.

Is the sushi overpriced? Yes. But is it good? YES! With BRS coming from a big nyc restaurant group, I wouldn’t expect anything less. What I will say is that I do enjoy coming here often for a treat & almost everything I’ve gotten here is bomb & would recommend for a celebration or date night.
Photos are from a few different visits!

Good fish and rice in the sushi, but way too much wasabi. I had to scrape the wasabi off before eating it and found a concentrated ball between the fish and the rice in every piece. Hoped to have better quality for the price

Everything good is overpriced and everything moderately priced is very average tasting. Also has a depressing vibe.

Fantastic sushi restaurant! We ordered the chicken wings, tuna tartar, and miso soup for appetizers which were delicious. For the meal we had the blue ribbon chef’s platter which was enough to fill 4 people. Everything was tasty and the service was great.

Very much overrated. We went there with friends. Even the presentation is nice the food gave me cramps all night and it is super expensive which is not worth it at all. I only liked my cocktail which has no alcohol in it basically. Not recommend it.

😎how many times have you been to this place? 1 (in Boston)
👩🏻summary: visited this place for end year dinner with 12 friends. I had already been to other BR restaurants.
🍣food: the server said he would bring three customized sushi/sashimi boats and selected appetizers. We ended up with so many leftovers. 😭 Some of them (e.g saba - blue mackerel) were difficult to try because of the strong fishy smell - I usually enjoy eating saba, unfortunately the Blue Ribbon’s saba was off.
🍸drinks: lychee martini was good. Not sure about Junmai…
💬service: he was attentive and friendly.
💁🏻♀️would I revisit this place? Probably not - not really impressed with the quality of sushi and sashimi (compared to the price).

Food
I am so happy I found this place. It is certainly a great mid range sushi restaurant in Boston. We ordered fried chicken wings, toro tartare, a dozen nigiris and a few maki. Everything was delicious, even though the maki looked a little mediocre. It is so hard to find a reasonably priced sushi restaurant that got the rice right.
Everything else
The service was excellent. I accidentally knocked over my glass of water and they were so nice to move us to another table. I also loved the decor, mellow but elegant at the same time.
I will come back!

This place was so unbelievably good! The inside of the restaurant is really cozy and the food is really high quality! Super good sushi and appatizers to choose from. The service was amazing everything was timed perfectly. Definitely check this place out!

Luxury sushi spot in a prime location off Comm Ave. I thought the selection on the menu beyond just sashimi and sushi was very generous, although clearly we went for the sushi. The crispy rice tuna was the fan favorite, although the wagyu beef 'uni toast' was an easy winner also. Sashimi buffs will readily enjoy this place, they have high quality cuts as the price reflects! If you're more into special rolls and other Japanese eats like kaarage etc it's very pricey.

Formulaic and not exciting. We opted for large sushi platter in hopes for some exciting options and more presented with the most basic of options.
