Overall it was very lovely. Came here for the second half of a 3rd date. It was after 8pm and the sun was just setting. Slight breeze on a 90 degree day. Service was pretty good. We flagged our server down a couple of times. We ordered a Maryland and Dragon roll. Avocado & Cucumber rolls. California Rolls. Yellowtail & Jalapeño. Way too much food but we were pretty hungry. We had some Sunset Sangria drinks and they were very yummy.
Overall it was very lovely. ☺️

My friend put me onto this place. I honestly was not expecting much, but I have to come on here and say that this is one of the best sushi places around, not just because of the atmosphere and people working here. But because they have some real good tasting sushi, great prices, great service, good drinks. Highly recommend. Also they close at 1am ! On weekends

From the moment I sat down, Deema greeted me with a warm smile and made me feel right at home. We've been to Kusshi many times for sushi (always good), but this time we decided to try their other menu options. And they were amazing! We had the Agedashi tofu (make sure to order it early - it takes 20 minutes to make), the Japanese pickles, and the seared fatty salmon - all delicious starters with great flavor. For entrees, we had the Miso Chilean Sea Bass (also takes 20 minutes to make!). The fish was done well, buttery, and again, great flavor. My husband had the ramen, which was also tasty. I was nervous veering off our usual sushi, but I'm so glad we tried other food on the menu! Now we'll have to return and try other (new to us) dishes!

The Sushi/Sashimi here is actually pretty good. The cocktails are strong which could be a positive or negative depending on who you are.
The Udon and Ramen is really 👎👎👎. The worst crime is the noodles and broth are BLLLAAAANNNDDD. Jinya is way better and I don’t even consider Jinya to be that great. Every staff interaction I’ve had here has been friendly and quick 👍👍👍.

Edited to “It was an incredible experience! Deema, the bartender, made me an amazing rum punch that was perfectly balanced – not too sweet, just right! She was friendly and attentive, really adding to the great atmosphere. I also tried the spicy rock shrimp appetizer, and it’s a must-have. Perfectly crispy with a delicious kick, it’s easily one of the best appetizers I’ve had in a while. Highly recommend stopping by for a great drink and some delicious sushi and appetizers. Kusshi Sushi ruined California rolls for me forever... Because once you try their baked Cali roll, it's impossible to go back to the standard one again! They put a creamy sauce on top that has tiny fish roe mixed in it (then I like to add eel sauce for a touch of sweetness) 😋. They also have the best specialty rolls here. The firecracker roll will blow you away! If you like sushi and haven't been here, it's definitely worth trying.

** Kusshi Pike & Rose Rockville - **
Kusshi Pike & Rose is a my favorite local place in the DMV! It is a gem that truly elevates the sushi experience. Upon entering, you’re greeted by a warm, minimalist decor that sets the perfect ambiance for enjoying a meal. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable, guiding you through the menu with genuine enthusiasm.
The highlight of the evening was the sushi boat and various Chirashi sushi on the menu! Kusshi also has Katsu and gyoza that brings in the best delightful journey of flavors and textures. Each sushi I ordered was meticulously crafted, showcasing the freshness of the fish. The Bethesda Roll was a standout— tuna and avocado topped with salmon and a drizzle of sauce, was both visually stunning and delicious. The balance of flavors was impeccable, with just the right amount of spice.
Don’t skip the nigiri; the salmon and eel melted in my mouth, and the rice was perfectly seasoned—sticky yet light. The attention to detail here is evident in every dish.
Kusshi is a must-visit for sushi lovers. Whether you’re a novice or a connoisseur, you’ll find something to love in this inviting spot.

The nigiri sushi did not look, smell, or taste fresh. I tried eating a few pieces but ended up having to send it back. My son ordered the shrimp tempura roll and the california roll which he ate but even he agreed that it wasn’t the best. Unfortunately after he ate his food, we noticed a piece of hair on his plate (we didn’t even mention it- pic below). I’ve been here one other time a little while ago and I remember it being better which is why we came today. The server was however very nice about it when I let her know I couldn’t eat it due to it not tasting fresh. She took it back and apologized…the grilled chicken yakitori was also meh (we didn’t finish). Not sure what happened since the last time we came.
Visited 6 months ago
We ordered a sushi rolls and two udon noodles. We have asked the server if we can get the rolls first, before the noodles. She brought them out all at the same time! She was reaching across me placing the bowl on the other side for my wife. That was bad for a server to reach across the table, since if it has spilled, it could have been a disaster.
The tempura shrimp udon was much better than the seafood version which had corn and a mixture of seafood that simply ruined the taste. The udon was not hot like it should be. They must have prepared the udon noodles first but had to waited for the rolls.
Outdoor seating was really nice with a good view, but it was a bit windy today.

Update: we continue to enjoy Kusshi. The food and sevice are consistently good. Today we tried the Japanese Pickle appetizer. It was colorful and full of flavor, but on the salty side. We had a great lunch & continue to recommend Kushi.

Our first time at Kushi Sushi was beyond our expectations. The service was excellent, nice & attentive, but not annoying. The seaweed salad was one of the best we've had. The Maryland roll was outstanding, as were the other rolls we had. We can't wait to go back and try more dishes.

My dining partner and i both got sick a day after having lunch at kushi. We had sashimi and ngiri and i had noticed while eating that the sashimi was cold (meaning refrigerated fish - not necessarily fresh). The rice used for ngiri was dry and was falling apart. It felt and tasted like it was stale. My guess is that they are re using old and stale ingredients. I will call health authorities to check as others might get sick too.

Ordered a few sushi rolls and they were not neat at all. The rolls were falling apart before i even touched it. Maybe the chef was new? Nonetheless, the fact that he still presented the rolls in such a sloppy manner was unacceptable. Sushi is practically impossible to eat when everything is falling out and can’t even be picked up.

I need to preface the review with the fact that I know the owner of the establishment. I want to add that I never announce my intention to eat here, and while the owner has been there a majority of the time, my experiences have never been different whether or not they knew I was present. I have been extremely satisfied with every aspect of my dining experience on a consistent basis.
-----
The food here is excellent. I have had the fatty tuna several times, and I can't recommend it enough. It is such an amazing way to start and/or end a meal. I have had a variety of the regular and specialty rolls, and I am always blown away at how quickly they can produce such quality food (in both presentation and taste). I need to add that I haven't had some of the local flavors (Baltimore, Chesapeake, etc.), but if I do, I will update this review to reflect that. I am not a huge appetizer person (outside of the fatty tuna, which is amazing), so I cannot reliably review those at the moment. That being said, you are definitely getting your money's worth here for the quality you are getting.
--
The wait staff do a solid job. They have always been attentive, efficient, and knowledgeable about recommendations; we don't drink often, but our waitress (from a previous visit) had several choices that fit our tastes quite well. This has been my experience every time I have eaten here, so I feel confident that this is the norm for the wait staff here.
--
The location is relatively busy, but I've never felt crowded, even as somebody who doesn't typically doesn't enjoy being around crowds. There is outdoor seating as well, and while that felt a little bit tighter, I need to point out that a local fundraiser bringing in roughly 35-40 more people for one group definitely contributed to that. The interior was slightly dim at 10-11PM, but that is definitely expected/welcomed, and there were no issues reading the menu or finding the restroom. I have been here in the afternoon, and there was plenty of natural sunlight, and the lighting was adjusted accordingly.

I visited Kusshi Sushi with a friend on a drizzly Wednesday evening for happy hour. Luckily, it wasn’t too busy, and we snagged a table near the bar. The atmosphere was chill, and the staff were friendly and attentive.
We ordered from the happy hour menu. I had a Sapporo draft while my friend enjoyed a Lychee Cosmo.
We started with the pork gyoza (pan-seared) and the firecracker specialty roll. The gyoza was tender and arrived quickly—a great start. The firecracker roll (spoiler alert: my favorite!) featured tuna, crab, and salmon, perfectly complemented by a satisfying tempura crunch.
Next, we tried the Sashimi Sampler (chef’s selection varies by availability and freshness). I believe it included bluefin tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and sea bass. The tuna was my favorite, while the yellowtail was my least.
Then came the spicy edamame. Note: you’re supposed to eat just the beans, not the casing (lesson learned!). They weren’t very spicy but made for a fun snack during our conversation.
I finished with the Ruby Specialty Roll (not on the happy hour menu). The tuna and avocado created a creamy, savory texture, highlighting the consistent quality of the tuna here.
Fun fact: “Kusshi” sounds like “happy” in Hindi, which is exactly how I felt leaving!

It’s very frustrating that at times the food is incredible and other times it’s cold, weirdly sour and just meh. While dining in, my friend and I would have to wait for 20 minutes to even be acknowledged at our table and then it would be a battle to find our waiter again to finally get the bill (even when we come in during a super quiet time of day). It’s very odd how the food can change in quality so drastically. The miso soup is also kind of sweet which has always been odd to me. Overall, I wouldn’t come here, there are lots of other places to eat that are better and cheaper. I do think that the inside of the restaurant is pretty though.

Went around lunchtime solo and the hostess seated me at a table outside. Waited 15 minutes and no one had approached me at all. Not even someone coming by letting me know they will be with me. Got up and left, who knows how much longer I could've been waiting.

I recently dined at the fast food restaurant KUSSHI located at 11826 Trade St. Bethesda MD 20814 on 02/26/24, and my experience was far from satisfactory. There were several issues that made my visit quite disappointing.
Firstly, the portion sizes were notably small, and the prices were unreasonably high. Additionally, the food looked awful, the salad dressing was incredibly sweet even though I warned the waiter in advance to only put oil in the salad.
Service also left much to be desired - the staff's behavior was unprofessional and discourteous. The waitress served us in outer clothing in a jacket in which she walked on the street - rather than wearing the appropriate uniform for a public catering establishment.
But the worst thing was when they served food in dishes where a splinter was broken off. This negligence could have resulted in a guest ingesting a harmful object, posing a significant risk.
Even in shelters for the homeless the attitude to visitors is a thousand times better than in this awful restaurant.
The waiters still had the nerve to bring the bill, I deliberately paid it to post the bill and photo in the review. The waitress saw that the dishes were left untouched.
I sincerely from the bottom of my heart do not advise any person in the world to visit this disgusting place.

Food was AWESOME and their patio is perfect. However, there was a miscommunication with one of our orders and instead of fixing it and apologizing, our server decided to tell us to try it first and then came back to man-splain why we ordered incorrectly. We did get the correct meal in the end, but it was definitely unnecessary attitude.

While exploring the area, I decided to satisfy my craving for sushi and discovered Kusshi, a restaurant highly praised for its quality.
Despite Pike & Rose being renowned for upscale dining experiences, I was surprised when I stepped into Kusshi and found it cramped and crowded, with an unconventional layout inside. The contrast between the inviting exterior and the somewhat chaotic interior was unexpected, reminding me not to judge a restaurant solely by its appearance.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the efficient and speedy service.
Although my sushi was slightly flattened by the time I reached home, it still delivered on taste, and my dining experience was enjoyable overall.

I am enamored with Kusshi; the appetizers, the sushi, the soups...Having such delectable food so close is amazing, I wish I could indulge every day! Having spent five years in Japan for business, and living near the Little Tokyo historic district in LA, I can say from experience Kusshi's offerings stand out in flavor and quality.
Although I have dined at Kusshi numerous times, it's always been at the same location. From looking online, it appears that each offers a few unique menu items only found at that location, and I look forward to trying some of them!

I'm utterly appalled by the atrocious sushi served at this restaurant, particularly considering it wasn't given away for free. The fish was beyond bland and appeared ancient, a complete mockery of sushi. This has to be the absolute worst sushi disaster I've ever endured, with what must be the most inferior quality fish on the planet. And the soy sauce? A complete fiasco, likely ruined from sitting out in the sun all day. Charging anything for such dismal quality is outright robbery. Profoundly dissatisfied.

This place is always busy no matter what day of the week I go. That should tell you something about their food and service. People just keep coming back. Overall the place is kinda crowded since the bar area gets full of patrons just trying to grab drinks and hang out and the restaurant area is cut a little smaller because of the little convenience store area. But the fish is fresh, and the portions arent skimped. Since they get so busy the wait might be a little much because they always seem to be doing dozens of takeout orders too (I see all the bags piling up to be picked up by Uber/doordash/etc) but you should be willing to wait since I assume you're out with good company. 👍

The absolute best!
We called and then arrived at restaurant incredibly late (an hour before close). I was hungry, with no expectation (most restaurants rush service, at that hour) and just wanted to get a quick and convenient sushi roll.
However, from the fantastic customer service over the phone, the welcoming greeting upon arrival AND THEN being provided THE ABSOLUTE BEST table service from Eric & the entire staff (the cleaners greet you with chivalry and kindness) until the moment you leave— my family was thoroughly enamored and impressed.
This place is a gem. I would assume that management treats their staff very well, considering how patient, kind and attentive they are.
We actually ran into the manager (owner) on our way out. They have a small bistro where you can purchase Japanese version of American snacks and we excitedly wanted to grab a few for our kids. He was super generous, approachable and down to earth.
Again, this place is a gem and gets it right on every measure. It felt like the pinnacle of hospitality!

Great service, good sushi. The vegan ramen was WOW! The veggie sushi was excellent, but could use a bit more variety. I'll definitely go back.

We stopped by for dinner and I accidentally unlocked a secret menu item: Katsudon. So if you're in the mood for chicken/pork tatsu over rice, topped with sweet sauce and an egg. Give it a try!
Other than that, we ordered chirashi bowl and unagidon. Both were delicious. For the Chirashi Bowl, fish was in good quality. I'm not a big fan of the furikake. It added a few extra layers of flavor to the rice, but I was wondering what this cheap artificial seasoning doing in a 30 dollar bowl of rice. Shouldn't the chef know how to properly season sushi rice?
For the Unagidon, 2/3 of the rice was covered by pickles....pickled cucumber, pickled radish and pickled ginger. Why don't you just call it Pickledon? That way, people may be surprised to see that 1/3 of the bowl is covered with unagi.
As of the Atmosphere, dimming the lights doesn't hide the cheap chairs and the weird layout of the restaurant.

Quality is still as good as it was when they first opened a few years back. Service was great and I had a great time. The restaurant is a little dark as its lightings are very dimmed, which would be great for those looking for a more intimate setting, just not for my personal preference.

I have been to Kusshi many times, but what I experienced today was very disappointing. The food was good, like usual. However, when we ordered sodas, they were completely flat. After letting the server know, one of us asked for a Sprite, but had the same issue. Now, my problem really starts from what happened after this. We decided not to order any drinks, and politely asked that the drinks would not be included on the bill (we had ordered nearly $100 worth of food). After a few minutes, the server came back, apologizing about the issue and said that they checked the soda machine and in fact the drinks were flat and offered to bring us a can of coke, to which we agreed. Another few minutes went by and the server came back saying that there was a misunderstanding between her and the manager, and the CO tank shows there is no problem. She then proceeded to ask, and I quote: “would it be okay to put the drinks on the bill?”. I was surprised. We had ordered so much food, and here they were arguing about two sodas. I told her that I am not happy with it, but yes, go ahead and put it on the bill. Now, all this time the server and their manager/supervisor were standing a few steps away from us, clearly talking about us. The server kept looking back at us while they were talking, and I found their conversation particularly rude, and the entire situation extremely uncomfortable. I am utterly shocked and disappointed. Two sodas are not worth losing loyal customers. I would like to clarify that we had no issues with the server; she was only doing what she was asked to do and say, but my disappointment is with the management. Least we expected was to at least have the manager come to us and clarify the situation.

Am a Kusshi regular, been going here for years- love this spot, one of my go-to restaurants in the Pike & Rose district. Takeout service is always super fast and convenient. Dining out on the patio in the warmer summer months is nice too.
Love that they have both filtered and unfiltered (the cloudy white types), hot and cold, sake selections to pair with your food.
Recommended starters- edamame, Kusshi wings, softshell crab, takoyaki, spicy rock shrimp, pan fried pork dumplings. Fave starter? Always the takoyaki- fantastic taste and texture.
Fave specialty rolls- bethesda, rainbow, fire cracker, crazy tuna, cherry blossom, seared spicy salmon, lava.
Customer service is great- I rarely have issues with my takeout orders but the few times that I noticed something was not up to par, all it took was a quick call, brief explanation, and the hostess/host would immediately issue a refund to my card for that particular item. Def appreciate the prompt service.

It's fine. Nothing to write home about. Spicy rolls were covered in a spicy mayo sauce I was not a fan of. Service was very good.

The sushi was okay, but the service ruined the whole night. Our server, Ellen, was very disrespectful. We experienced some indecisiveness when it came to what order for desert, instead of helping us she became very rude and told us that we should not even order desert, that we should just leave. She was very disrespectful when my sister was trying to choose a vegan desert choice, and ellen decided to say that “no one cares about you being vegan.” We had young kids at our table and ellen also decided to curse at us. My younger sister asked for chopsticks and ELLEN also decided to tell her to “eat with your hands,” I mean who does that??? She refused to serve us respectfully and in general. The whole time she had an attitude. I advise this restaurant to train their serves to not be disrespectful because the whole time we were so nice and were not rude once. She also told us that she did not want to split the bill as it would be a waste of her time. There were so many problems with her, I do not think I will be coming back.
Update: the response from the restaurant is a lie. We had not even ordered any dessert yet, so nothing had been brought out. Why would we make a server go back & forth 6 times? We only ordered our mochi once, no one had to go “back & forth” not even once. This is quite disturbing how you guys can lie to make your business look good & not even take up for the fact that your server was in the wrong.

Good sushi! Lame service. Especially poor service for the money. I get a better vibe from the sushi folks at Lotte than anyone who provided service at this restaurant.
For background, most of our group have waited tables at some point; so we tend to notice when wait staff are coping under pressure, dealing with a rough evening, whatever -- and we love to tip. But not so much on this night. We tipped fine anyway, but not with much joy behind it.
The staff vibe was of disinterest. Getting someone's attention wasn't quite like pulling teeth, but that's because you can get hold of teeth easier than we could catch the attention of anyone with an interest in helping us.
We're unlikely to return, despite the tasty sushi and tempura (for my non-sushi-inclined SO).
TBH, we received better service from the gent in the restaurant next to the ice cream shop, who noticed how cold we were outside and re-lit the nearby gas heaters. Thank you!

I love Kusshi Sushi, the sushi is always fresh and the service was excellent. The 3 star for atmosphere is due to how close the tables are, and it gets really loud. However, this time, we went for an early dinner. We'll definitely be going again.

The bethesda roll was okay nothing really noteworthy. Pork katsu has a very generous serving size, however the quality of the meat as well as the lack of seasoning made it hard to eat. Felt quite rubbery and not that pleasant.
