Sushi Reviews
Sushi Experience №1

I’ve been coming to this bar for nearly 15 years. As a tradition when I come home for the holidays my husband and I meet up with all my friends that are also back home for the holidays. On Friday the bouncer was incredibly rude in some need to feel like a big shot. My friend had a Canadian ID because that’s where she lives now. He acted as if she was trying to pull one over on him. I said oh no we’re from here we went to high school here. He interrogated us about what hs, what town to which we answered and he was like never heard of it. We’re in our mid 30s it was silly. We went to the met and Stan and Joe’s instead where we had no issue. We won’t be coming back. Hope your security guard gets a girlfriend or whatever his problem is gets resolved.

The food was okay, but the overall dining experience was disappointing. We waited 45 minutes for our sushi to arrive, and the service left much to be desired. The waiter seemed uninterested in interacting with us and provided poor service. Despite this, a 15% tip was added automatically without our consent. Additionally, the noise level in the restaurant was so high that it made it difficult to enjoy our meal.

Review from 9/20/23

While not a very traditional sushi place, it still has great food and a nice ambience. Outdoor seating was great at the time and our waitress Ms. Becca was wonderful.

Miso soup was pleasant and filling. The edamame was, well, edamame, but nonetheless a good opener. Avocado salad was a little dry and uninspiring, but the flavor was decent, especially in tandem with the pine nuts.

The star of the appetizers, however, was definitely the yomato's tofu, which is always my friends and families' go-to. It's a little sweet, very crispy on the outside, with the savory taste of bonito flakes and soy wrapping the dish together; it's very filling and shareable as well, and definitely my biggest suggestion.

We tried the Kamikaze, Metropolitan, and Miami rolls. Of them, the Kamikaze was just fine; however, we enjoyed the Miami rolls and the Metropolitan was our favorite.

I went to this “Japanese restaurant” for a quick meal after work. I had to go back to work in a couple of hours, so I just wanted a peaceful, relaxing meal as I was VERY tired and hungry.

I just wanted noodles and a broth of some kind. So, I ordered their “tsukemen”. I looked at the menu and saw a surcharge for meat, which I thought was odd because tsukemen isn’t served with beef, chicken, or shrimp. It’s basically a plate of room temperature noodles that you dip into a hot rich broth or dipping sauce (in a separate bowl). But I just thought the proteins listed were the ingredients used as the base of their broth, so I order the chicken one and wait.

When I got the dish I asked where the second bowl for the broth was and the bartender said “what broth?” To which I replied “the broth for the tsukemen….the dish requires a second bowl to dip the noodles in…also, why is everything together in one dish?” He just said “this is how we do tsukemen.”

I was actually very mad because why would you put the name of a dish on your menu, and then do nothing that makes the dish unique and serve it? It’s not tsukemen if you don’t dip the noodles. I got served a single bowl of oily noodles with a few pieces of charred chicken and steamed broccoli, and an egg on top. It was cold, I wanted a hot soup.

So then I ordered the udon which is supposed to have a broth. Not yaki udon, I ordered their udon. Ugh, they gave me the same flipping thing. Sticky room temp noodles with the egg, same pieces of chicken, same pieces of broccoli and no broth? I asked for a broth to make it a soup and they said they could get me a bowl of broth. Omg….it was literally just warmed up chicken stock. I was so upset. Everything had one taste together: butter. There was no other flavor except the taste of oil and butter in the udon. Even the egg tasted like butter.

I was so hungry, and tired and I went to this loud place where they were blasting hip hop/pop/rock music, where the staff wore short skirts and were partying at the bar (which is fine if you’re into that kind of vibe). I should have known something was off when I didn’t see a sushi chef at a counter preparing food, but instead a girl on her phone when I walked in, ignoring me, and then when I asked for a table she said “for one person?!?” (So I just said I’d sit at the bar). This place is NOT a traditional Japanese restaurant. It appeals to a certain type of crowd who doesn’t want to sit quietly and enjoy their meal.

I just paid and left, then went to an actual Japanese restaurant about 6min away walking distance, and ate there. It’s funny though because as I was eating at the new restaurant a girl who worked at Tsunami came and ordered from the restaurant I ended up going to. I knew this because 1) it was quiet enough that you could actually have a decent conversation with your dining guest, and 2) she knew the waiter there and said she was working at Tsunami now. Funny how you now work in a “Japanese restaurant”, but come to a traditional one and order food from there.

Anyway, I won’t be returning back there ever again. If you want good Japanese food and don’t want to be bombarded by loud music and served by indifferent waitstaff who don’t know why things are the way they are, don’t go there. Go somewhere else

Sadly it's just not as good as it used to be. Sushi left a fishy aftertaste and the sushi rice was really gummy. $16 drink was just not worth it and I had to ask for them to doctor it because it was almost undrinkable at first. As many other people have said it's SO LOUD you can't really enjoy your dinner and/or company but I think they want to be a club more than a restaurant so not sure they care. Service was really great and friendly though.

My sister loves sushi so after she moved here I picked this place and it was a 10/10! Big thank you to Josh the bearded bartender for taking care of me and making my banana expresso martini so quickly. Im usually at D.C bars so a deliciously mixed drink has now made this my go-to bar for Annapolis.

Top 3 things you have to eat here - the Annapolitan Roll (Old Bay and crab sushi roll), Tuna Lollipops (huge pieces of raw tuna with chili oil and flaked sea salt), and the Garlic Chili Edamame.

There are plenty of other delicious items to get on the menu, along with some fun cocktails as well.

Atmosphere is dimly lit (which I prefer, but some people may want to plan accordingly). It's usually a popular place on the weekends, and they also participate in Dinner Under the Stars where they expand their seating into the street.

Chill vibes, tasty food, and an easy place lose track of time with good company.

The quality has gone down significantly, we got 5 rolls of sushi, this is the worst sushi I’ve had in a long time. The employees will act as though they want nothing to do with you, and you’re an inconvenience. The music has gotten so loud you can’t hear anyone speak. Overall this place has been removed from my go to list for Annapolis

We really enjoyed the food experience and will definitely be back to try more things.

Very different feel than most sushi or Asian restaurants. Decor and music is very hip and more like a club. The bar was very lively and large. An older crowd might not be a fan but shouldn’t let that deter them from the amazing food.

Unique cocktails. We got the Thai-ed up. You could taste the Thai tea but the vodka was very apparent. Crimson tea was ginger beer forward.

The menu has a variety of Asian items, many with a unique twist. We tried a variety of things.

Nightly special - coconut lime scallop ceviche with homemade wonton chips. The scallops were small so you could fit many in a chip at a time. The coconut flavor was mild and there was a slight kick of heat to balance it. The chips were very airy and crisp. Highly recommend it!

Kamakazi roll - fish was fresh with a firm texture and mild flavor. The roll was wrapped tightly and the wasabi was potent

Coconut curry seafood soup - we originally ordered the mussels, but the server recommended the soup instead since we like curry. Amazing recommendation. They make the coconut curry in house. It was like an Asian version of cioppino. The broth was slightly spicy and there was lot of seafood. The fish was in large pieces and very tender. Recommending getting a baguette for dipping or side of rice to pour it over.

Shiitake mushrooms steamed bun: came as a set of 3. They are mini taco like; not a dumpling. The steamed bun was soft and fluffy. The mushrooms had a unique flavor and the veggies added a great crunch or offset the bun.

Make sure to save room for dessert! We had the banana lumpia. Filipino style fried banana with homemade peanut butter ice cream. If you like peanut butter and bananas you should try this.

Our whole experience at tsunami was very lackluster. The restaurant has a weird dingy goth vibe and all of the staff are dressed in punkish clothing. Like why do I need to see my server's stomach? Or see through a dress?

The food was not worth the $85 that we spent. The portions were small and the sushi was a bastardised take on traditional rolls.

The service also pretty much nonexistent.

Sushi Experience №22

Food - had maki rolls, tofu appetizer, edamame, and chicken kapow bowl. The apps were the best. The fish looked limp, old and tasted rubbery - stay away! The kapow bowl was really salty. The warm house sake had a very strong alcoholic aftertaste so I guess it was just really cheap sake.

Atmosphere - casual, goth vibes and loud club music? All the staff were dressed in black or punk rock clothes. It was just so loud in there and the vibe was just odd for a Japanese place.

Also, my sake glass was chipped, my boyfriend's cocktail glass had so many scratches on it (they showed up in the sunlight), and our apps and entrees all came out at the same time. Overall a very subpar experience for spending $85 here.

3 stars for service because the server brought our apps and entrees at the same time and he didn't come back so we had to go up and ask him to refill our waters.

Never returning!

Yesterday my Girl and I decided to go to Night Under The Stars to eat dinner at Tsunami. When asked if we wanted inside or outside we decided the music outside was too loud. There was a band at the end of the street. So we get seated inside where the music is even louder and it's not the band outside. It was like they were trying to drown out any possibility of you hearing the music outside which would have been perfect if Tsunami had not been playing anything while the band played.
I'm talking almost as loud as any night club I've ever been to. I had to yell to be heard by my girl who was sitting right next to me. People at the bar all yelling because no one can hear. It's dumb. This is a decent neighborhood place and I'd like to go back but not if I'm gonna be deaf when I leave. This was between 7 and 8 PM. Normal dinner hours. The late night club kids don't come out that early. Save the nightclub atmosphere for later in the evening and let the locals enjoy their meal without having to yell at each other.

The hot tea came out cold, the sushi was chewy and tasteless. Very artificial taste, especially the rice, and the seaweed was very plasticy. Service was okay, server tried her best, but the overall ambiance in the restaurant was really dark and depressing. Food was kinda awful, I would not recommend any of the sushi, and the pork belly steamed bun is really weird tasting with the combination of potato salad and the pork belly. And everything is upcharged, including the sauces on the side was being charged and the hot tea was only given with very little water in the cup. First time going there was okay, this second time around was a lot worse. Never going back again.

Lovely places for Japanese food. It was delicious and there's a wide range of cocktails (which they will make virgin if you ask nicely). My order was mixed up, but resolved without any issues. The only criticism was I remember it feeling a bit dark in the seating area.

Edit: I came back, the lighting is better but on both days it was uncomfortably loud. What I ordered was small and pricey, and only some of it tasted as good quality as last time. Definitely worth a visit, but set your expectations.

Place was slammed early on a Sunday evening. No rez, waited 25 mins for a table, easy friendly bar to wait. Table service super slow, mostly a function of under staffing. Apps of seaweed salad, dumplings and damage were ok. Maki were fresh tasting but super ordinary, bland and not in line with the hip high energy atmosphere and prior solid meals. Noise level in the dining room was 11 out of 10 (acoustics the culprit). Errors on the bill. Overall not an enjoyable dining experience. Despite prior good experiences wont be back soon.

The bartender suggested I go to Stan and joes(which I was going to go to but I forgot it was karaoke night).they waved at the shelf as to say this is what we have. Well it’s a particularly dark place and I couldn’t see what they had. So there was way to much back and forth and I ordered the first thing the bartender suggested.so anyway great place. Just be prepared to be profiled.hopefully they will make it more clear what they have from a liquor perspective. For a bar that tries to be anti annapolis it was a very annapolis experience. Cheers

I recently spent three and a half years in Japan so I’ve been spoiled and my review is based off that experience. So take my words for what you will. We started with the edamame and tuna poke. The edamame was as traditional as you could get. The poke was good but a little over powered with soy sauce. The variety of sushi rolls I had were not traditional but tasted outstanding. I ordered the ramen with pork belly. The pork belly had good flavor and a nice crispy sear. The broth and noodles tasted store bought. They put cilantro in it which was odd to me. It added an unnecessary freshness to it. The ramen was disappointing overall. The drinks, service, and atmosphere were fantastic. I would recommend this place, but not the ramen.

The patio is dog friendly so it’s always nice to come here and sit outside for drinks and sushi, happy hour is from 4-6 pm on weekdays and they have a special on drafts and wine but not food unfortunately. However the prices are reasonable and the quality of the fish is very good and fresh. The fried rice is also delicious and a big portion. Throughout the summer they are doing live music on Wednesday and Saturday so the whole street is closed for outdoor seating and it’s lovely.

A slightly expensive, slightly better than average Asian restaurant, located Inside the speaker system an 80's nightclub. Honestly it's only the excellent service that resulted in a 3rd star. The udon noodles were bland, the fried rice was ok, at least the quality of the meat (beef) was good but both the noodles and the fried rice needed the addition of some chilli oil in order to have any flavor. Our server Elanore was amazing, so Tsunami I hope ypu appreciate your staff. I don't think I am the first person to comment that they are earning you more stars than the food and ambience deserve

Let's start with the good. The service was great. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating.

The sake selection was also nice.

However for the negatives. Let's call the food what it is. Bad. The ramen soup was bland and the ramen noodles soggy. The toppings weren't terrible but couldn't save the bowl. The udon noodles were even worse. Soggy, slathered in butter and sesame seeds, and mixed with overcooked broccoli.

The sushi wasn't terrible but one of there must have been a sushi that had old bay because all the sushi had a underlying taste of old bay.

Would recommend avoiding this place for food. One extra star for great service and one star for good drinks. Everything else left a bad taste in our mouths.

Attended this establishment on Sunday Feb 19th, 2023. Had reservation for 7:45 pm. The staff were very dismissive. The waitress didn't bother to give her name. But she had a teal highlight in her hair! Just to get soft drinks took 20 minutes, and again it was clear the waitress didn't want to serve the table. It was obvious she made assumptions based on our looks (young Latino/Black couple). It is a shame that in 2023 prejudice against appearances still exist! The food was poor quality and the noodles were more like pasta noodles, than ramen noodles. Tried calling the restaurant multiple times after leaving to file complaint, but I was just sent to voicemail.

We were told there would be a 45 minute wait. We accepted and ordered a round of drinks. We then noticed there were at least 4-5 empty tables with no plates or anything at them. We waited another 20 minutes and then were sat at one of the empty tables.

It took another 10 minutes to get the drink orders and then easily 30 minutes until food started showing up. They were busy, but they weren't THAT busy. It looked like there was one waiter for the whole place for some reason, he was doing what he could though and was apologetic for the wait.

The appetizers (tofu bites, miso soup, edamame and seaweed salad) were DIVINE. The sushi was okay, not mind blowing.

Overall, it seems like they need to hire more staff to handle just the tables that they have in order to properly turn tables and keep people from waiting too long.

Every time we go there the service blows me away. This time we had Caroline and she went above and beyond for my husband's birthday. Despite us being somewhat of a pain (not everyone in our party showed up and ordered at the same time. We even had to change tables because we had more people show then we originally planned) she was amazing!
They have half price bottles of wine on Mondays which was a nice surprise. I didn't care for their specialty cocktails but my friends did. Great sushi. Will look forward to going back.

Atmosphere score based on me being my dad which means I am old. Place was loud but the music was awesome. Food is excellent. Try the truffle mac and cheese. Staff was freindly and very attentive. If in Annapolis stop in you won't regret it.

Specifically for townies, creators, and out if town explorers. A "sushi spot" with the best burger in town. A bar that challenges convention without causing confusion. A consistent safe space for originality and expression.

Delicious food. Great service. Atmosphere needs work, very dark and noisy. Couldn't hear ourselves talk, couldn't see the menu unless we used the flashlights on our phones.

Wasn’t pleased with the food I had here. Me and my family came here the other night for sushi, rice, miso, and ramen. Food was very Americanized and not made how it is originally supposed to at all. The ramen was not made with typical ramen noodles. Noodles were basically spaghetti noodles and were soggy. Personally not coming here again.

Very disappointed in this place. The sushi was so plain and bland. Absolutely a waste of time ordering it. The drinks were okay and the appetizers were average. I wouldn't recommend this place for sushi, maybe a drink and then go somewhere else.

If you are sushi lover, check this place out.
Service can be a bit slow if it’s busy and the apps are priced a little high but the food is good and the sushi is always good.

Their ramen is also very tasty. If I didn’t order sushi I’d get the ramen especially in the fall months.

Park in the garage around the corner for a close spot and a about a 3 minute walk

Have been to Tsunami many times in the pastand enjoyed it, but most recently it was very disappointing. The variety of sushi rolls that we ordered were uninspiring and did not taste fresh.

Ramen was fantastic. Also, Tsunami features a wide selection of what i consider some of the best sushi in the Annapolis area. . Atmosphere is a little noisy; bar is bustling. The restaurant is clean and well run. Servers are on the ball. Drinks are expensive, but drinks are skillfully made.

Dining under the stars with friends and ate at Tsunami. On the recommendation of a friend I had the pork bellies with eel sauce. It looked like a taco, but tasted like nothing I have ever had. It was fantastic, full of flavor, yet still subtle. I am peeved at myself for not ordering the sushi to go with it. What was I thinking?!?

We loved eating here during the Dinner Under the Stars event that Annapolis holds in the summers. Service was great, and the edamame and sushi rolls were delicious. Only negative to me was that the sushi rolls only come with 5 pieces so it makes the cost add up quickly.

I really liked tsunami, great atmosphere, the staff was really friendly and attentive. The sushi is really good and they have plenty of good options. If you can, try the steamed buns, you will not regret it. We were lucky and found outdoor live music which added to the experience.

Service…forgotten, edamame after the sashimi
Rotating tap stale not managed
Udan noodles missing menu ingredients
The good:
Ummmm the udan noodles we ordered to go because we couldn’t take it any longer arrived immediately with the check (but they were missing ingredients…)

Trendy, cute, great menu with exciting choices- hard to choose it all sounded so good! Everyone in my group loved every single thing we ordered. The only thing that I wouldn't order again is the chicken fried rice, it was just okay. Not bad, just okay. Service was great, atmosphere was on point.

The good was the server(Breezy according to the receipt), steamed buns with shiitake mushrooms, and tutu Tuesday(fun event that they had going).

The bad was the sushi and noise. Ordered 5 different sushi rolls and couldn’t tell one from another. Wasn’t the worst sushi I have ever had but nowhere near the best. The noise was ridiculously loud. I had to scream for another person to hear me and I had to read my waitress lips. I didn’t know there was music playing till I used the bathroom.

For the price I would not recommend going here.

So let me start with what was good:
1. The service was GREAT. Our server was amazing and showed the perfect amount attentiveness.
2. I LOVED the ambience and vibe of the place. They leveraged every available area to plug in seating, some of which was uniquely placed. We had great seats at the window overlooking the street so that we could people watch while we ate.

These 2 are the driver behind the 3 stars.

Now for the not so good:
1. The food was mostly disappointing. The sushi was good, as were the pork belly. But the tuna lollipops were too salty and the pieces weren’t uniformly cut so some of the pieces were way too big in size. The slaw was the only thing that saved the duck legs, which were over cooked and didn’t have much flavor. And the ramen was bland with noodles that were a bit to undercooked. The broth also had no real depth to it.

I’d been wanting to go to this place for awhile so I really was disappointed.

First and last time here. Just ordered some sushi from this place and I should have bought a couple rolls from the Giant instead. Don’t let the chill atmosphere fool you. The spicy tuna roll was just regular tuna wrapped in garbage disposal rice (like all the other rolls) and a sus orange powder that burned my gums and is putting my stomach in my mouth as I type this. The Kamikaze roll was also bland and god knows what that sauce was. Their salmon nigiri is flavorless, and all their fish is very tough. The soy sauce was objectively the best part of the meal. They also charged me more for a couple items than what their website advertised. When I mentioned this to the inked up waitress, she wrote it off as her being new and something something COVID.

Tsunami is one of our FAVORITE restaurants in Annapolis. Their Tuna Lollipops are absolutely incredible and their drink "High and Mighty" is delicious. The Basil Old Bay Edemame are addictive, and you can't go wrong with ANY of the rolls! 10/10 would recommend checking this place out. We probably eat here 4-5 time per year.

The sushi rice is not the best, which throws off a LOT of the menu. The salmon sashimi was fantastic, along with the miso soup. It could have been a bad batch of rice. The sushi was definitely fresh and the atmosphere is good.
