We tried this spot for happy hour and we were rather disappointed. I had the coconut breezy as my bevvie and that was good as was the brussel sprout appetizer we got. As for the sushi, it was all rather mid. I tried the Hawaiian roll and the crunchy red. The crunchy red was missing some ingredients from the description and was bland and the Hawaiian roll wasn’t much better. Maybe it was because we ordered off of the happy hour menu, but it just wasn’t the greatest food. Service was good and atmosphere was nice.

My wife and I stopped in for sushi and drinks. The drinks were good but very small for $14. The sushi was decent but much more rice than meat. We assume it was because it was Happy Hour. We will probably be back to try it when it isn't Happy Hour to see if the food is better.

Loved dining here! This place at night looks chic but also dimly lit and reserved so very cozy. The layout provides guests with a warm welcome feeling when entering, but the seating gives you a comfortable privacy from other guests. The waitress was very attentive, kind, took our order promptly and brought the food out in no time. (It wasnt during a huge rush but it was dinner time) The quality of food was impeccable loved the veggie unagi roll (eggplant) just incredible tasted exactly like savory fresh eel. I seriously couldn't believe i wasn't eating actual eel. The miso soup was perfectly salted unlike other restaurants. 5/5 stars well deserved. Will be back soon!

Always satisfying and always good service no matter which Blue Sushi you go to. This Blue Sushi is on par with the rest and serves great sushi with a smile! Conveniently located downtown near the events centers and hotels. Large patio. Lots of indoor seating as well for those rainy days. Does have a sushi bar and a regular bar for seating in addition to the regular table and high top tables.

The food was really good here. Service was meh. It was a slow night when we were in, but we barely saw our server.
Edamame was delicious. We just got the basic steamed version.
Hawaiian Roll was so good.
Crunchy Red was my favorite of the 3 we got.
Tidal Wave was pretty good, but there was too much cream cheese, it took over the flavor of the entire roll.

Took my best friend here for her birthday and we shared a bottle of Pinot Grigio, the mango crab rangoons and the Lion King roll! Everything was delicious and our server Min (I hope I spelled that correctly) was absolutely amazing! There’s also a strawberry tequila shot that we were surprised with that was super amazing! Can’t wait to go back and try more!

Don’t eat here!!!

We arrived early at 7:30 and were seated right away, which was a good start. However, things quickly went downhill.

It took 15 minutes before anyone came to our table, and it was the bartender who finally took our drink and appetizer order. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until 8 PM—30 minutes later—that our drinks and appetizer arrived. We ordered the rest of our meal at 8, but the food didn’t come out until 9 PM. By that point, we were starving and devoured everything in minutes.

Adding to the frustration, the food was served on shared plates, which felt odd and inconvenient for our group. The service continued to be slow, with another 30-minute wait just to get the check. We ended up staying from 7:30 to 9:30 PM, much longer than we wanted.

To make matters worse, the bathrooms were poorly maintained, with no paper towels or toilet paper. When we expressed our dissatisfaction and asked for the drinks to be removed from the bill due to the delays, the server blamed us, saying we should have made a reservation and that long waits are normal on Saturdays. (Side note: a reservation is for a table, not for timely food service—especially since sushi doesn’t require cooking!)

While the drinks were eventually removed, the overall experience was terrible. We still paid $70 for the meal and left hungry, forcing us to grab Fong’s Pizza afterward. I would recommend skipping Blue Sushi and checking out one of the many other restaurants on Court Avenue instead.

Generally this place is pretty good, but unfortunately we have a rather subpar experience every few times we go. I have on several occasions waited 1 hr + for food after ordering, even when it’s not very busy. I would love to ask a server where my food is at, but they all seemingly forget you exist when you don’t have your food yet. One time after waiting around 50 mins for food, the server dropped a few pieces of my roll when bringing it out and literally didn’t say anything about it. I had to flag him down and mention it. He didn’t apologize or anything, just said he would comp it off the bill, which he then proceeded to not do and I again had to mention that he dropped half of my food and he seemed very annoyed I actually wanted to be comped for it. Luckily, experiences like that aren’t the majority, but it happens enough that it does make me hesitant to eat here as much as I otherwise would like to.

Let me first say, I order from here often, but usually have it delivered because I do not like looking for parking downtown. Food is always spot on, like it was today.
Today, however, I ordered for pick up. It was like pulling teeth, the service could use some improvement. I tried to come in the patio door, which was locked, in which the hostess made eye contact with me. I walk to the main door and stand there at the hostess table. And I stand there for 5 minutes. Other couples were starting to come in behind me, and still standing there. She then comes over, I tell her I have a pick up order. As I’m looking at my order sitting behind the station. She looks at the ready order and then goes to the kitchen and comes back to tell me that they are working on it. I’m thinking maybe they’re working on one last thing. So I sit and wait. Another girl comes from out of nowhere, and they whisper some words and point. The second girl then proceeds to give me the bag that was sitting in my face for 10 minutes.
Idk what this interaction was all about. Could it be communication, training, or passing judgment based on sexuality/appearance..
As a manager of a restaurant myself, this was hard to watch and deal with. 😬 Please do better.

Food was decent but we waited an hour after we ordered when the restaurant wasn't busy. We had to reach out to our waitress and she brought back our food, which seemed like it had been sitting out. I got one of the crunchy rolls, but my food was soggy by the time it came. I also received a chipped glass cup and had to let the waitress know it was chipped.

I'm not a real sushi eater. I don't like the raw stuff. However, if you are looking for something to eat that is not sushi and such, go for the lettuce wraps and charred edamame. Together, it creates a really great meal. If you like the sushi, this is definitely the place to go. There are so many options and choices to taste.

Sat on the patio today even though with the strong possibility of rain, they accomadated me and my ppuppy. Everyone was so nice, bringing a water bowl out and a dog treat. A couple of the serving staff and the manager came out to say hello as well. The food was delicious as ever and the vibes were great from everyone!

It is a nice place. I personally don’t think the sushi is the best sushi. There isn’t much for flavor. I have gone into the restaurant and ordered online. Last time I ordered online I was disappointed by the taste but also the ingredients listed on the speciality sushi was not what I got.

The green goodness is was the only sushi that was okay. It did not arrive correctly. The Unami Nigiri is a bbq eel and it was awful. I also tried the Roja was very boring.

Overall, I love the atmosphere and the staff has always been good. I just haven’t loved the sushi.

The first time I came a few months ago, food was great but service was extremely poor. Empty restaurant and I waited over an hour and a half for food.
I thought I would try again, just because the food was so good, but I could not have been more disappointed. Service was slightly better, but it was still difficult to get our waitress to take our order, fill our drinks, etc.
The sashimi was horrifically overpriced for the servings we got. $17 for four tiny cubes of tuna is crazy, not to mention it was cut incorrectly. Sashimi should be cut at a diagonal, not straight up and down. The quality was mid and I only finished it because it felt like a waste of $17.
I also ordered the rainbow roll, which was rolled very poorly. The roll had similar mid-quality salmon and tuna. The shrimp was overcooked, rubbery, and I had to spit it out.
Would love to get good food and good service at the same time - but I will probably not be back.

Worst sushi/nigiri we have ever had. Yes, worse than grocery store sushi. How you can make raw fish hard and stiff is beyond me . VERY overpriced, especially for the razor thin slices served, and this coming from a family from Denver. We would never eat here again. They also need to change their toast settings. Why is one expected to tip based on the after tax price rather than before tax price on the food and drink?

Food was okay, service inattentive, sloppy: didn’t bring us the basics: plates, soy sauce, napkins, had to ask multiple times. We ended up stacking dirty plates on the empty table next to us because servers never cleared them for us. Food took forever, apps didn’t come first. Spilled water, kept promising to wipe it up but never did. They weren’t that busy, just not doing the basics very well. Don’t think I’ll go there again. It is a beautiful spot, though.

Sushi is amazing, but the service is a bit mediocre. Would it kill the bartenders to look behind them once in a while? I practically had to shout across the bar to get their attention for a napkin & chopsticks. Also recommend the Partly Cloudy sake flight; quite pleasant.

All in all: not too bad, but service is definitely wanting.

You can get better sushi down the street, had to wait over two hours for two rolls. Drinks are good but cheaper just about anywhere else. They did take 50% off the sushi, still would be better off at Wasabi Tao right up the street.

So, this only happens when I'm shocked. Here's a photo of empty dishes. We devoured charred edemame and charred shoshito peppers as an appetizer. The flavors were spot on and enhanced both veggies.
For sushi, he got Crunchy Blue (skip the cilantro), and I got Spicy Kaluna Crunch (soy paper). We were both so happy with these creative rolls. Their whole menu is creative and offers so many meat-atarian and vegetarian options for both sushi and other menu items.
The bonus, we hit here during Happy Hour! Mon-Sat 2-5:30 and Sun. ALL DAY.
Staff was great, and we will be back to try new things!

Solid experience on a Friday at 515. I caught the last few minutes of happy hour so took advantage with a couple of the Maki rolls available for happy hour prices.

It wasn't busy with in house diners- the place is huge. Easily seating for 100. I would guess 15 people there. Seated immediately in an awkward 2 top crammed against the window. Not sure why with all the comfy spaces open. Who knows their seating protocol though.

Nice menu. Many sushi and Maki rolls looked amazing. It was hard to choose only 2. I went with the snow something and blue crunch. Both tasty. Snow had 5 pieces, Blue had 8 pieces. I took half home for my bf.

The star was the crab coconut curry soup. Good heavens. I could have eaten a bucket of it! Sooooo incredibly good.

My original roll that I ordered took over 30 minutes to come out. That was my reasoning for the 3 star service. Crazy long time.

Lots of outdoor space for seating, mix of bar, booths, tables indoors. Pretty lanterns hanging around for decor. Handicap accessible. Street parking close or parking ramps.

Total for 2 happy hour rolls and soup $25.

We went for date night and were amazed at the service, quality of food, and atmosphere. Our server, Kristen was super friendly and knowledgeable of the menu and provided excellent service. We aren’t super familiar with sushi, so she was very helpful. The GM, Ethan, even stopped by our table and generously bought us a dessert. It’s a must try for sure! We will be back soon!

Kirin draft was amazing, Ceviche was delicious, Happy hour rolls and sushi were small portion, but reasonably priced and fresh!
We ordered 8 dishes (+ 1 extra sushi plate on the house 😎) & 2 draft beer during happy hour, the bill was less than $100.
Everyone including the host, waitress, chef, and manager were very nice and friendly.
Overall, very pleasant experience.

I gave 2 stars for service because I don't think they have much staff. I know that in many establishments, many employees call out, and probably, this place is no exception. So, please be patient with the waitress. The booths are too low, and you sink in the seats.
The wait time for food is a bit too long. Other than that, food is good. The prices on plates are not bad. I avoid going there weekends in the evening. Then again, I avoid that part of town in the weekends.

The food was not the quality I expected considering the reputation, but I went at lunchtime and maybe I always dealing with the second string chefs. The rice felt dry, the yellowtail was of a very poor quality (felt mushy) and the shrimp was flavorless. The truffle salmon was the worst of all, it was overly sweet to the point I couldn't even taste the fish.
The other issue I had was the customer service. I was eating along, during a very slow time, and for some reason the waiter just let dishes pile up. It ended up covering half my table.

Food was good but a bit pricier that I'm used to given that the rolls were smaller than what I'm used to. Salmon sashimi was good, but, again pricier than the norm for the quantity. Calm relaxing atmosphere. I'm not a big fan of sushi but must admit the food was quite good as well. Visiting from Florida and the first 2 experiences were very pleasant but today i walked in wasn’t even acknowledged , Yes im a black woman and it shouldn’t have mattered but what made it so disappointing was that the manager and the cashier were just staring like they both didn’t want to service me , but then when the white male came in he gets acknowledged, crazy but everyone deserves respect , but anyway no I will not be coming back and no I won’t be reaching out to give you guys any further details , you never know who knows who so be careful who you treat people

I’m in town for a meeting and found this diamond in the ruff by accident. I’m so happy I did. My waiter, Caleb, was fantastic and suggested the Lion King roll. It was delicious!! He also recommended dessert that was also delicious! Thank you for a great meal!

Food was delicious though a little pricey. Wish they had a sushi or sashimi bundle option. Having to order separate items was very expensive. Overall I enjoyed the food and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely will be going back

Been here a few times since it has opened. The atmosphere is great. Unfortunately the sushi has been below average both times in my opinion. Rolls were falling apart and the rice was dry/flavors don't match. It also seems like they have focused a large portion of the menu on non traditional sushi/vegan options. Fun place to hang out but I would not recommend the sushi.

My family came down to Des Moines for my mother and brother in-law's birthdays. My parents had eaten at Blue Sushi on a previous visit and loved it. All seven of us, including my one year old niece, were seated quickly near the bar area. Our waitress was quick to take our orders. We had two appetizers - Brussel Sprouts and Lettuce Wraps. One of my sisters did not want Sushi so she ordered the Beef Hot Rock. Her daughter ate some noodles and cucumbers from the water. The rest of us ordered a variety of Sushi including Tidal Wave, Cowgirl, and Green Eggs and Hama. All were delicious!

I hate leaving bad reviews for places but I had one of the worst experiences here. I've had consistent issues with this restaurant being slow and giving bad wait time estimates but this was next level awful. Don't get me wrong the food itself was good but the service was horrendous. It took well over an hour for our food to come out and there was literally maybe 4 other tables seated at the time? A couple groups of people came WELL after we did and all got their food first. We were told "5 more minutes" repeatedly for over 30 minutes by pretty much every member of the staff there. Their attempt to remedy the situation was to offer us free drinks when only 2 members of our party even had drinks to begin with. Extremely unimpressed with the entire situation. I don't think I will ever return to this location.

The Best sushi in the Des Moines metro, hands down!! I’m in love with this place.

The sushi exceeded our expectations with a huge variety of rolls. I loved the fact their menus were informative where their fish comes from.

The atmosphere and the decor was stylish and trendy. Def picture worthy.

The service was amazing; she was so sweet and willing to provide us with her top rolls when asked.

The variety of sake was wide. We needed us having both sake flights on the menu, which were awesome. I only wished they had a lychee martini on their drink menu.

If I could eat here once a week, I wouldWe will be back as often as we can!!

We tried six of the vegan sushi rolls. Absolutely the most delicious sushi we have ever tried, vegan or not!!
Best part is it was vegan! We thought we would never get to enjoy sushi again after becoming vegan.

This restaurant is our new favorite place, if you want to try amazing vegan sushi rolls, this is the place.

I really wanted to like this place because I want to support any place that has vegan or vegetarian options, but I didn't enjoy it. My non-vegetarian friend didn't like it so much either. They fell a bit behind the night we came so our food took a little over 40 minutes to come and I think that's part of what made it a bit disappointing. We only tried a couple of things so I can't judge their entire menu. But my daquiri was a bit too sour to enjoy and we both stopped eating our sushi after one piece. The staff was so incredibly friendly though!! I want to make sure people know how kind and welcoming they were. We also chatted with a manager and he was also very friendly.

If you are in Downtown DesMoines and want great, fast service and good Sushi rolls, this is your place. They have a large menu with plenty of options, including a kids menu. We got the Hawaiian and Philadelphia rolls and they were amazing. I also had a very tasty raspberry mojito that went well with the meal. For dessert, a tempura fried ice cream with raspberry. Very good! I would recommend this location as the service was great and the food as well!

Great location and atmosphere! We had a reservation 90 minutes before a Civic center show, seemed to be a slow night, however we didn't get our food until 15 minutes (over an hour to prepare!) prior to the show starting. We had to eat quickly and RUN! The manager was apologetic, but offered no remediation. The sushi was not up to the standards I am used to at Mandarin, Wasabi, Achebono, and Seafood Market (thin slices, smaller rolls, etc). Drinks were very good (highly recommend if you are just grabbing a drink!). Our waiter was very good, despite the kitchen backup (3 stars are to the kitchen service).

I recently dined at Blue Sushi Sake Grill, and my experience left much to be desired. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that this dining experience was going to be far from enjoyable.

Upon arriving, we were met with a less-than-enthusiastic greeter at the door. Her lack of warmth and hospitality set the tone for the evening. It's disheartening when you enter a restaurant and the first impression you get is one of indifference. The greeter's stone-faced demeanor made us feel unwelcome, which was the exact opposite of what we expected, especially when there were still more than 2 hours until closing time.

Our server, unfortunately, did little to improve our experience. We had to leave our table multiple times to request basic items and service. This lack of attentiveness was frustrating and only added to our growing disappointment. A good dining experience should be seamless and enjoyable, but we found ourselves constantly having to remind the staff of our needs (silverware, salt, napkins, etc.).

Now, let's talk about the food. We ordered steak cooked on stones, the quality of the steak was disappointing. Cuts were too thick to cook properly on the hot stones, resulting in meat that was raw, not even rare. It was a letdown, especially considering the premium prices at this establishment.

Same thing for the sushi which was overwhelmed by the cream cheese. The excessive use of cream cheese masked all the other flavors, making it difficult to enjoy the sushi.

In conclusion, our experience at Blue Sushi Sake Grill was disappointing on multiple fronts. From the unwelcoming greeter at the door to the uninterested server and subpar food quality, it was an evening that fell far short of our expectations. For a restaurant that prides itself on its sushi, this visit left us feeling underwhelmed and unlikely to return.

Had a wonderful evening at Blue! It was my boyfriend's birthday and our waiter was awesome. I highly recommend trying the mango crab rangoon! Close to one of the best crab rangoons I have ever had. Our suishi rolls were unique and all delish. Wait time from the appetizer to the rolls was slightly longer than I am used to, but overall, it was a great experience. (:

I have had some superb food, and this sushi for a celiac Gluten free vegan option is the best I have had. Add to that gluten-free soy sauce and service that is like it is supposed to be. Excellent. Gluten-free menu too.

Had a reservation for a time but figured we couldn't arrive at that time and were flexible and not busy so they let us move our reservation time ahead to another time.

The presentation of the food was alright. We chose the outside seating area so I didn't get to experience the inside atmosphere but it was nice being outside. The cleanliness of the restaurant was great.

The food was good. The price and the portion sizes of the food were a whole lot smaller than what I usually see when eating at a sushi restaurant so I won't be going back, not saying everything else was bad but realistically and personally, I won't be coming back. Some of the pieces were slimey, not saying it's bad but it threw me off a lil bit. I'm also surprised the miso soup wasn't complimentary but I know each restaurant does there own thing differently.

Service was good although I wish our server came back to us a little more. The only reason why I didn't order more is because I knew it was going to take a long time for him to get back to us.

Kid friendly. The main reason why I chose this place was because it appeared to have better deals than the other ones in the area but they really need to update their menu prices online on Open Table and updated pictures of the menu on here.

If I could rate this place 0 stars, I would. Don’t know what their food even tastes like considering we were sitting at our table for 40 minutes (with a reservation) with maybe 5 people dining in and not one person stopped to even get our drink order. Would not go back or recommend to friends. Went to W-Taos and was served immediately and just a walk down the street.

Place has an awesome ambiance and the tiki bar hidden in the back is an awesome "secret" that can truly enhance the experience on a fun night out. Both miso and crab soup truly hits the spot and specialty rolls are pretty good.

We've been to Blue a handful of times the past few months, and while every once in a while there is an issue with double/triple seating, the staff themselves are wonderful and always do a great job!

We try to rotate something new in every time to get a good feel for the menu, and not get into the "sushi rut". I will always always order one of their Raspberry Mojitos however, so delicious.

I think there is something to be said that you get what you pay for when it comes to sushi. Blue is far from the cheapest, but overall not going to break the bank. Go during lunchtime or happy hour to make the most of it!

I love the patio seating as well, not always an option pending staff coverage, but definitely worth it for the open air dining.
