I love the Schaumburg location, so this one was a let down. Service is slow and wait staff didn’t check in unless we called them to see if we need anything. The robots also delivered our drinks after 30 minutes and asking wait staff twice. Then we ended up with double the drinks and an extra lol. There was also little sushi on the conveyor belt as well when I went on a weekday afternoon, and they ran out of the ice cream taiyaki dessert, which was unfortunate. This place is still new, so I’m sure they’re still trying to the get rhythm of things! Food was good otherwise at least :)

If you like sushi then this place is for you. Incredibly cool concept of having a conveyor belt bringing you plates to choose from. The sushi was good, the atmosphere is very kool too. The robots bringing you your drinks is a neat touch too.
Highly recommend. Also, because most of the servings are 2 pieces it makes a perfect pairing for a date.

Well, law, y’all, that Kura place was somethin’ else. Them sushi plates spinnin’ ‘round on that belt looked just like Daddy’s ol’ hay feeder—‘cept instead’a feedin’ cows, it’s feedin’ folks. You tap on some little gadget, and next thing I know, a dang robot’s bringin’ my sweet tea. Bout fell plumb outta my chair.

I got me a spicy salmon roll and some watermelon—roll was zesty, and that melon was sweeter’n a fresh-cut cane. But I tell ya what, that cold air hittin’ me? Had my left knee lockin’ up somethin’ awful and my right hip feelin’ like it’s grindin’ cornmeal. By the time I finished, even my elbows was achin’.

Food’s good, but Lord have mercy, my joints ain’t built for all this robot tomfoolery!

This was deplorable. I can’t get the taste out of my mouth. We tried several items. The wagyu negiri was cold and tasteless. I wanted negitoro and I ordered both the negiri and the handroll. When they arrived, it smelled and when I put it in my mouth I wanted to vomit. It was just disgusting. My boyfriend also said his spider roll and whatever else he tried I think he had salmon, was “meh”. Honestly I don’t think I can have worse. Grocery store sushi is better than this.

Kura is a nice place to hit up after work with some friends. The rotary sushi is as expected. Its fresh but no where near a real sushi restaurant. The service is mainly robots and the conveyor belt but it's great for uninterrupted catching up. Price for all dishes is the same no matter the dish. Makes it easy to calculate cost.

After going to Skokie Kura for the second time I can confidently say that it is the subpar Kura location. If you're not trying to eat, go to this location. Both times that I've been here, all of the sushi dishes have been empty. The first time I went was during dinner, second time now was lunch. I recommend going to the Schaumburg location if you don't want to be disappointed.

Great way to try different types of sushi. You can grab pre-made things off of the conveyor belt or special order.

Only downside is the repetitive music played by the drink delivery robot.

I ordered to-go and even an hour after the “ready” time, it wasn’t ready. 2 ramens and 6 rolls (all the same though). Do not order to-go from here! They kept saying “5-10 minutes” the entire hour we waited. Just be honest and ask to cancel our order if it’s going to take that long.

I had been scared off from trying this for a while with the bad reviews, and I regret waiting so long. For the midwest, this is an incredibly high quality conveyor belt sushi joint. The ingredients are well sourced and the tech works seamlessly so that you can get anything on the menu within a five minute wait. I mostly ordered from the tablet vs the belt as I wanted to enjoy the many seared nigiri options fresh, and all of the seafood was excellent. The beef nigiri were not my favorite, but that isn't a surprise given the price point. I love the food, the variety of more traditional sushi options, and the fact that I can do so quickly without a whole lot of interpersonal interaction for a fast lunch.

In Japan, these conveyor belt sushi places offer decent sushi but they’re always busy because it’s a good value. Here in the US, it’s still the same decent sushi but they’re charging high prices to try to appeal to the novelty factor. I think the novelty is now wearing off and they aren’t so busy anymore. Value will keep customers coming back. I won’t be coming back because I got all that I wanted out of it from a novelty perspective. The prices are too high.

Sushi Experience №58

If you want a singularly infuriating and disappointing dining experience then by all means, this is the place for you. From the mediocre food to the asinine "check-in" process, this was a miss. The gory details are listed below, but the tl;dr version is that this place is a waste of your money and an even bigger waste of your time.

1.) If you're a two-top looking for a fun date night, be warned: They will not seat you at a table facing one another, but will instead seat you at a bar-type area that faces the conveyor belt where you are elbow-to-elbow with strangers. So much for ambience.

2.) If you're unfortunate enough to be seated in this bar area, you'll soon find that the conveyor belt is 95% empty because it winds through the entirety of the restaurant before it gets to you. The few items that made it to us were the leftovers that no one else wanted. And they just kept circling around...and around...and around. I swear we saw the same scallops go by five times before someone took them.

3.) To offset the above disappointment, they offer the opportunity to order items missing from the conveyor belt directly from the kitchen by entering your order into an iPad above your seat. The only problem? You have no way of knowing when this food will arrive. Each dish is sent to you 5-10 minutes apart. So you just sit there.....hungry.....waiting and hoping your food will eventually arrive. And when it does? Disappointment.

4.) The roll selection is mediocre, and the quality is poor. Rubbery octopus, fish with bits of skin still on it, and room-temperature miso soup. Mmm. Delicious....

5.) Sticky bathroom floors. Not much else to say here. Ew.

6.) Despite there being no line and a hostess behind the counter when we arrived, it was seemingly imperative that we enter our names and phone number into a free-standing iPad less than three feet away before we could even be ushered to a Waiting Area. The wait for a table wasn't long, but, then again - what table was there to wait for?

But it wasn't all bad, I guess. The robots that deliver your food are cute (although they blare conversation-endingly loud music) and there was a particularly eager server who refilled my Coke and brought the check.

The food was decent. Don’t come here expecting photo ready food. You can tell they do things at a very fast pace. Which is understandable because of the entire concept. However, the issue lies in the fact that we found A HAIR lodged in a piece of our sushi. We quickly notified the waiter in a discreet manner in order not to alarm the other guests and literally nothing was done except to get us a new one. I would’ve at least expected them to remove that item from our bill or the manager to come out and apologize.

Very difficult to sit comfortably together if you have a party of six or more. Hard to read the menu's if you are not seated on the outside. Only one restroom for women or men is an inconvenience. Overpriced, low quality sushi. You paid for the novelty of the conveyor belt delivery of your food. Service was mediocre at best.

Visited 7 months ago

Sushi Experience №70

The food is great, when you can readily get it. This is a revolving sushi bar, and if you sit in the wrong section, you will be met with mostly empty serving containers. It was short-sighted to have the rotary snake through the entire restaurant instead of having two separate tracks. You can order items through the electronic menu to be sent to you on a track above the rotary. However, that can take some time. It also seems they are often understaffed in the kitchen, which adds to the problem.

Been here a few times with my partner, and we love this location, especially compared to Schaumburg. The food selection is always pretty readily available, and ordering through the ipad usually doesn’t take long and is pretty fast. I hope Kura can fix these problems soon.

Walked in got seat to a wet table, wet floor. We had to call for service to get it cleaned. The entire floor is super sticky walking in. (Sticky floor = dirty restaurant)

I usually love this place but the past few times Ive been here, the negi toro gunkan has been replaced by what tastes like old, disgusting, slimy, gray, chunky fish, instead of a smooth filling like in the website photo. It's definitely not being made like it's supposed to be or like the Kura in Schaumburg.

Edited 6-18-24:
I came back here for lunch and they still didn’t fix the negi toro gunkan. It was still slimy, chunky, fishy smell. Poor quality Kura overall. No one came to assist me when I pressed the call button. Won’t be coming back.

So cute and fun! This was my first time at a revolving sushi place so I didn't really have any expectations. We had a waitress that explained the menu and how to grab food from the belt. The robot waitress was also very cute and brought our drinks. Food was pretty good, but it's not clear how long it moves around the belt, so unclear how fresh it is. I actually returned 2 days later with my daughter and staff was so nice, they gave her 2 mystery toys. The restaurant is really clean and so are the bathrooms. We will definitely be returning.

This is my third time here, but it was my first time taking my son. I wasn't sure if there was anything he would eat on the menu. Ended up just getting him fries, watermelon, and ice cream. Oh well, he was happy. He was excited about our robot bringing the drinks. He wanted to be the official plate returnerer, slipping them into the slot. I had him order something on the screen, and he anxiously waited for it to arrive on the conveyor belt. We were at 13 plates and read there was a prize at 15, so we got two more plates just so he could receive a ball prize filled with stickers. My husband and I enjoyed our soup and several plates of sushi. Crazy how the bill just continues to add up as you take plate after plate. And you don't have leftovers to enjoy later. Worth going here for the experience.

Review for pick-up only:

DO NOT order pick-up from the app. I have now ordered 3 times from the app and all 3 times the sushi was not ready for pick-up at the time it says on the app. One of the orders was ordered 2.5 hours before time of pick-up and still took 30 mins PAST pick-up time to be ready. Another time, the restaurant was not busy and I saw my exact order (nigiri pieces) on the belt, but yet my order still took 30 mins to put together.

EDITED TO ADD: I reached out to customer service and received an email back from corp saying they will look into it. Weeks later, no response even when I sent a follow-up message asking for a response.

Worst place to eat in Chicago! Was dining in for dinner last night and we never received our food. The funny thing is they were giving us "Plastic forks" instead of chopsticks and when we called a waiter to ask for chopsticks he said that they dont have any! What a joke!!! Had to wait forever for food and then the waiter came to tell us that the kitchen is about to close! After hours we received some low quality disgusting 🍣 that we didn't ever ordered and when we asked to see manager nobody assisted. Never going to come here again and will not suggest anyone to pay a visit. The Schaumburg location is way better than this. The atmosphere was very noisy and they took forever to send us our water that too on a robot without any straws i guess they were out of straws too.

Went to Kura for the first time last night. Eh, nobody was waiting to be seated but the hostess still made us sign in on an iPad and receive a text message that our table was ready. That took about 5 minutes. We had no idea how the revolving conveyor worked or ordering from the iPad, so the hostess said she'll send over a waitress. The girl that arrived didn't speak English. So she was absolutely no help explaining anything. Once we figured out how it worked ourselves, the food was just ok. Some of our sushi had weird stringy white things visibility coming out of the rolls. My wife said it was just fat or muscle but I still had to pull it out before eating. The fried rice was just ok with way too much sauce so it was very wet. The soy sauce on the table was sticky, and the ginger on the table was left on the table for everyone to use and touch. And lastly, most of the dishes on the conveyor were empty. The concept was pretty cool but I don't think I'll be returning.

I did not want to wait until the next morning to get my order. I asked the desk to cancel the order and asked to be reimbursed on my debit a/c. It took the lady at the desk 5 minutes to come out and tell me that the order was canceled and they will refund to my debit card. 15 minutes now that I am sitting in my car waiting to be refunded and still nothing. This kaiten-zushi restaurant leans hard into automated services by offering at table ordering with a digital menu, a robot that delivers water to your table, and a special belt that delivers orders right to your table. The gachapon machines above the belt that you can order Dragonball goods from adds an unexpected gameofication element to the meal.
The sushi itself was mostly a win, but one roll in particular turned really mushy and had a bad mouth feel, but the variety of sushi and desserts more than made up for it.
It would be a great place for anyone looking to dine without distraction. The staff was courteous and eager to help when we needed assistance.

Same items that we already passed on kept coming around. Small portion sizes, 2-3 rolls per plate do not warrant the 3.95 per plate price. We had 17 plates between 2 people and left hungry. I have issues eating room temp raw fish. The rolls were mushy and all the fish looked like it's been sitting there for a while. We stopped by for a quick dinner around 5 pm on a Sunday. We were shown to our table but no one explained how to order or what to do. Had a tough time figuring out how to get the plate out, turns out that you have to push hard on the cover and it will raise up. Would have been nice to get an introduction. I ordered water that never came until I went upfront and asked again. A cute robot finally delivered our water which was kinda fun. The sushi bar itself is kinda cool, great idea. Kura is the first ever Revolving Sushi Bar in Skokie/Evanston area. Decided to come here with friends to enjoy some sushi.
They have a fun revolving belt which delivers your order.
Best part is if you don't find what you want on the belt, you can order it on the screen and the order is delivered on the belt.
There is a moving robot that is fun to watch which brings you water and drinks order.
They have main entree, soups, sushi and desserts to choose from.
It is a fun experience to see food going around, feels like somewhere else like Japan or Singapore.

Yikes! This was a completely underwhelming experience for my husband and I.

1.The poor workers are used at hosts/cleanup and were understaffed.
2. A weird robot brings your drinks and everything is ordered via the computer menu at your table. This could be considered "cool" but really takes far too long and takes away jobs.
3. The sushi bar was about 10% full if that. Everything had to be ordered.
4. The edamame was incredibly cold. Very clear it had come from a fridge. Throw a little salt to at least attempt some decency.
5. Rolls were so blah ghat we left after two and went somewhere else.

All around waste of money and time. I have been to much better revolving sushi bars and will continue to go there. Don't waste your energy here, I did it for you.

Second time coming here. First time was opening week and the plates were almost always full and there was a large variety of options. Second time was much less impressive. Went there Saturday at around 5pm. About 80% of the plates were empty. They'd only refill the same ones at a fairly slow rate. Removed some desserts they had from opening week. Overall a disappointment compared to the Schaumburg location. Hopefully it's just new opening problems that will be resolved.

Nice atmosphere and a lot of fun taking sushi off the conveyor belt with the group. Food was decently good, but just a little overpriced for its quality. Servers were really nice (the humans - the robots were alright too). I noticed that we were in and out pretty quickly, so it's a great spot to just grab a quick bite, especially with a friend. You can get better sushi at other places, but you won't have as much fun choosing food and winning little gacha prizes as you will here.

Very very nasty food!
I’ve got sickened.
My stomach hurts too much!

I’ve gone here four or five times now and the quality is consistently getting worse which is sad because they haven’t even been open that long. They barely put anything out on the conveyer, the sodas are flat, the and the food just isn’t that good which is sad because I’ve been to other Kuras and they’re fantastic!
This location needs some serious attention.

Fun experience, good sushi, only downside is the wait time around dinner 5-7Pm. Download the Kura app to reserve your time. Would recommend to a friend

We hit the call button to get a server to order, no one came. The conveyer belt is set up to if you're not in the front you won't ever get food. We left and I'm still hungry.. the crispy rice wasnt on the menu to order and they never made it to us on the belt.

I’ve been here two times and it was a cool experience! The sushi is delicious but it can get very busy on evenings and weekends that it’ll be hard to get a seat. Sadly it does not take reservations. On the second time I went, I had a much better experience than the first time I was there because I came on a Tuesday around 2 PM. Staff were very nice and they really liked my Yor and Loid plushies when I came during the Spy x Family event.

The belt is always empty. Every plate is 3.40. But consider the amount of food you get, it's way more expensive than the traditional sushi places. The fish slice can't get any thinner than you can see thru it.

NO FOOD ON THE BELT!!!!!!!!!
I was running across the aisle to get one plate… and I was so mad that I felt dizzy from my high blood pressure.
Throughout the dinner I saw less than 10 plates of sushi on my side AND THEY TASTE SO MID

No food on the belt. You have to wait and wait to get something to eat. Very Bad bad. My husband was starved to nearly pass out. He almost fainted due to anger and despair.

really neat new-ish spot here in skokie. high tech amenities makes for a virtually uninterrupted dining experience. No alcohol being served just yet- but they do plan to become licensed which is a bonus. We will be back soon!

Enjoyed the wide selection of sushi. The wasabi and ginger were on the table, and containers were not clean. The soup was overpriced for basically broth and ramen noodles, a piece of pork with a chunk of fat and half of a discolored hardboiled egg 10.95. Soft drinks were 3.75 also overpriced. Overall will probably come back.

Not that good. Food itself was pretty basic, what you’d expect for a normal store. However, the service was terrible. Not a staff member, but the lack of one. We ordered water on the computer, and we never even received it. Not even after we were done eating. Also, it is also really slow. There was barely anything on the conveyer belts so you’d better be prepared to wait forever to actually receive what you want. Atmosphere was good, pretty clean.

1st time trying kaitenzushi aka sushi train. We came around 6:30 ish on a Friday night , obviously we expected for a wait. Check in on a kiosk by the entryway, wait said about 30-50 mins and you'll receive a msg. When we got the message(35ish mins in) , went in and host said to wait another 20-30 mins.
Finally got seated, the host asked if this was our first time .. we said yes . She said she'd assist us on the how to's but she never came back lol. I'm guessing she's overwhelmed. Anyways long story short we just did our own thing and explored. There's a screen by your table ,click away. Our drinks came fr those cute robots going around. There wasn't too many options for sushi so I also ordered ramen . The Ramen was good , The sushi was ok, could do better tho.
Overall it was an experience .

Fun experience and tasty sushi! Staff are friendly and happy to show you how everything works. After 15 plates you get a prize too. Perfect place for a date, as most plates have two pieces of sushi. It's also a great way to try new things

Well we went in and then basically left.
3.75 for a coke

And then the conveyor belt was basically empty and everything we got tasted old and mixed with too much mayonnaise. The California with real crab had zero flavor and was just mushy. One plate had a hair in it and anything ordered took forever to get to us.

We went on a Monday during lunch and it was not full but had some tables full.

Just will not return.

Sushi Experience №171

My visit to Kura Sushi, a Japanese sushi chain from Japan, was an absolute letdown. When a restaurant hails directly from the land of sushi, Japan, you expect nothing but the best. Unfortunately, Kura Sushi was a complete failure in living up to the renowned standards of Japanese sushi. The sushi was a major disappointment - the fish lacked any sign of freshness and looked uninviting, while the rice was dry, crumbling at the slightest touch. Ewww....

What’s more disheartening is that Kura Sushi represents Japanese cuisine in the U.S. A Japanese chain like this should be a proud ambassador of their culinary heritage. But the quality of sushi they served was so poor, I believe if a Japanese person saw it, they might actually throw up. It’s not just about not meeting expectations; it’s about disrespecting a revered culinary tradition.

I can’t stress enough how underwhelming and unacceptable my experience at Kura Sushi was. I strongly advise against going there if you’re in search of authentic, quality sushi. There are far better places that honor and capture the essence of true Japanese sushi. Kura Sushi, unfortunately, is an embarrassment to its cultural roots and should seriously reconsider its approach if it wishes to genuinely represent Japanese cuisine abroad.

It was our first visit to this chain. It was ok, we were a bit disappointed the belt was out of items most the time BUT you can order what you want, if it isn't on the belt and the upper track brings it right to your table. Robot brings your drinks, it is fun.

This is the BEST Sushi place in Chicago. The food is always off the charts excellent. and so fun to watch food go by. I am so thrilled they crated a store in Skokie. I got the Golden Crunchy roll and seared Scallops. Just so great !!

Completely unaccommodating to our party despite a reservation, sat one of us in a folding chair in the middle of the aisle to have the robots smash into the back of the seat despite being as close to the table as possible. We were also directly by the waitinf area and couldnt hear a word. The food was fine. The restaurant was fun. Just completely disorganized and no thought put into it.

This Kura location was by far the most disappointing. We’ve been to Kura all over the country since our family is a big fun of the revolving sushi.

The nigiris were cut so tiny and thin, turned just all rice.

I was looking forward to this opening near me in Skokie but this place falls flat. Went on a Sunday for lunch and signed in and was seated in 10 mins. That was the good. Overall, the food is mediocre and overpriced. We brought our kids for the rotary experience but 90% of the plates coming around were empty. So we had to order almost everything from the computer. It was cute when the food shot down the conveyor and the robot that brought our drinks was find for the kids but it took 30 mins to get waters and a couple sodas.

The prices are weird, all over the place and make no sense. $3.50 for a small Diet Coke and $5.50 for a tiny plate of fries. The sushi that was in the conveyor was mostly the same price but we had to order most from the computer which was more expensive.

The quality of the sushi was about the same for a mid-line all you can eat. Variety was lacking too.

Doubt I’ll be back. Hope they get their act together.

Ordered a pickup off their website and almost waited for an hour. They never received my order through their system even though I got a text and email confirmation. After waiting for so long a chef finally addressed it, told me it would take 5 more minutes, it did not take 5 minutes for me to finally receive my food. Got no compensation for their mistake and honestly the food was not worth an additional 45 minute wait time.

This spot is a tad bit closer than the original one we've been going to but it was nice to check out on opening weekend on a Sunday around 330pm. Definitely sign up for their rewards program and use the wait list. I personally prefer the bar-style seating but this location has more booths. Didn't notice the bar-style seats until later, peeking through the other side. The plates aren't as colorful as other locations so if you're into knowing the color and price-point, you might have to take a closer look at the top surface of the plate itself. There honestly weren't a lot of food items rotating on the belt which was surprising, but it picked up a little toward our late lunch, plus we went with ordering a majority through the pad, which I feel like many people started doing. We ordered Hot Green Tea and as a refill tip, ask your server for a refill (which is free) versus ordering another through the pad and getting charged. Overall, this is a great spot if you want a quick sushi fix, or even quick ramen, miso, gyoza, and other small Japanese bites.
