Sushi Reviews
Sushi Experience №1

Came here strictly for the ramen burger. But first, the logistics. Tokio Pub is located across Woodfield Mall, in the same building as Shaw’s Crab House. They have a separate entrance, but the restaurants are connected together inside, so either entrance would work.

Ambiance: classy/casual. Inside Tokio Pub, it’s quant and small, with a few round tables for larger party of people, a few tables and benches, and three or four high tops near the bar. Decór has Asian influences on it, will some wall posters of Japanese characters and art.

Service: great! There’s a host(ess) that greets you right at the Tokio Pub entrance. On this Friday night, at around 7, we got seated right away. We got seated near the door, and despite the triple-door entrance, every time someone entered the restaurant, there was a brisk Chicago January gust of wind. The server was gracious and offered to reseat us, and we ended up away from the entrance/exit and at the high-table near the bar.

Food: probably the worst out of the three categories. To sum it up, instagram/Yelp worthy pictures, but way too salty and gimmicky. But I understand it’s a fusion restaurant, so you have to be creative with your menu. We went with:

- Hot rock with ahi tuna — super-hot rock on a bed of sea salt, you cook your raw tuna on top. Takes about 10-20 seconds to get it to the desired medium consistency. It was fun, but the fun didn’t last too long. Seven pieces, and for the two of us, it was gone in a matter of minutes.

- Bang-bang calamari — I’m a fan of bang-bang sauce, and calamari. This appetizer was decent. The calamari had a nice crunch, and the hot peppers added the perfect spice to the dish. Cilantro for garnish, and presentation-wise, it looked great. The sauce was rather salty, and the dish itself, looked like onion rings, as they only used calamari rings, and no tentacles.

- Rainbow roll — when I’m at a place that offers sushi, I usually gravitate toward rainbow rolls, because it offered a combination of fish. This one had tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. Overall, it was good. It came with a garnish of sweet sauce which was good.

- Ramen burger — this was what we came for. It is a burger, cooked to what you want, for us, medium, with ramen as the top and bottom “bun” of the burger. The ramen was grilled/cooked, and offered barely ample structure, to keep the burger not in a complete globby mess. It came with a soy molasses sauce that was so darn salty. Thank God they gave the two of us a carafe of water, as we needed it. The burger came with almost unsalted fries, which OK. We had to finish the burger fast, as the ramen-bun was getting soggy by the minute. Definitely a gimmicky menu item, worth taking a picture of, but I would not be getting this or really recommend it to anyone.

Big knock-down of stars: when we got the bill, there was a 3% restaurant fee. Upon asking the waiter, he just smirked and said he would take it off. Apparently, as of Jan 2025, they are still charging COVID-19 fees. COVID was ~5 or 6 years ago yo. Imagine the amount of money this place gets from the unsuspecting patrons via this nickel and dime-ing. Look, I am all about supporting restaurant staff and tipping, to what I believe, generously, but don’t impose us these random obsolete fees like you’re a Ticketmaster of restaurants.

TLDR; food was OK. I would not go back again, but I tried it at least. Huge red-flag for subtlety charging a COVID-19 restaurant fee in Jan 2025.

BATHROOM REVIEW: Let’s hope you don’t really need to pee really bad, cuz it’s a long way. There’s a connecting corridor to Shaw’s Crab House, where you go through to the bathrooms. Up a few flights of stairs, then down another hallway, you’ll find the Men’s and Women’s bathrooms. Since the bathrooms are in the Shaw’s Crab House side of the building, it shares the same 50s vibe decór. Inside you will see old posters as decoration, and several urinals and stalls. Everything was clean, including the bathroom stalls. Sit or squat? Sit!

Made the mistake of ordering their ramen. Broth was salty brown water with no other flavor. Noodles were gummy with a funny, slimy texture. Perhaps they work best when fried into a hamburger bun. Others in our party that didn't order ramen seemed to enjoy their food.

Service was good and atmosphere was OK, but ramen was no bueno. Don't order it.

The ramen burger is legit, the bang bang calamari had just the right spice and the volcano roll had the best fried jalapeño slices to complement the well balanced flavors. The atmosphere is lively, the space is clean and the staff very proficient.

We had a fabulous meal at Tokio. Our first time doing hot rock and our server was so great and brought out several rocks so that all of our kids could do one. Rangoon roll, potstickers, pork buns and ramen were all fantastic. We had the best service, she was on top of everything and made our meal even more spectacular.

We got the ramen and two sushi rolls. I never write reviews but just wanted to warn off any ramen enthusiasts. The ramen was actually horrible. The broth was veggie based and tasted kind of like sewer water. The noodles weren’t good. Overall just really horrible. The sushi was bland and not fresh. Would have been better off getting grocery store sushi since it’s the same quality at half the price. The restaurant would be fine if you just went for drinks since the place is really cute, but if you want a good meal I would go elsewhere.

This place is one of my favorites! If you are in Schaumburg area this place is perfect for date nights!

The drinks are amazing, my personal favorites are Old Fashioned and Tokio Bloom!

Their sushi selection is unique and has such a different and delicious taste! Their food portions are small than others but if you are not sharing its plenty.

The staff is really pleasant! You must try it!

Staff was absolutely amazing. (June 16, 7pm)
-DISCLAIMER-
These are just my opinions!

I had:
-Hot sake
-Miso soup (Good)
-Calamari appetizer (soaked in mayo? Maybe they should put mayo on the side because it ruins the crispy texture)
-A rainbow roll (rice was fridge cold)
-And Bbq pork buns (slightly cold and didn't find the taste appealing, couldn't finish eating it).

I really wanted to like this place, thanks for the service.
Also there's a 3% surcharge not specified why.

Initially, the restaurant had notified me that my reservation for 4 people on Sunday was being cancelled. The lady on the phone stated that they had no water due to the plumbing issue that had just occurred and offered to make a reservation at Big Bowl nearby on my behalf. I thanked her but declined the offer.

When I arrived in the parking lot of Big Bowl, Shaw’s Seafood Rest., and Tokio Pub, I noticed two or three people going into Tokio Pub. I asked the server if the restaurant was still closed. She said that they had just fixed the plumbing 30 mins. ago and were now open.

Our server was Yesenia, and she was attentive, caring, and upbeat. The food, however, was average at best. For appetizers, we had fried calamaries, spring rolls, and pot stickers. These definitely tasted like store-bought, especially pot stickers. For drinks, we had Drunken Monkey cocktail. It was okay. Nothing special.

Finally, for entrees, we had Rainbow Roll, Shrimp & Garlic Fried Rice, and two Tonkatsu Broth with Pork Belly Ramen. I had the ramen, and it should have been much warmer. The others in my party also felt that their entrees were just average.

In conclusion, the service was great, but the food was mediocre.

I wish I could review their food but my friends and I ended up walking out due to bad service or lack thereof. We were seated right away and excited for the food, but the waitress literally dropped off water and then proceeded to forget about us. We’ve waited patiently and even tried to call her or other waitresses but no one came. It wasn’t a particularly busy day too. I’m very disappointed and will probably never come again.

Our first visit to Tokio Pub was amazing. Mary did an amazing job to give us plenty of recommendations for drinks, food and desserts. I highly recommend trying the filet mignon! Very juicy and tender. We also tried the samurai fries, a bit spicy but very crispy and a lot of seasonings. The Lucky Cat drink was a bit strong and very citrusy. Not my favorite. We also tried the beef sizzling rice, highly recommend to stir the rice from bottom up to avoid it burning otherwise it’s delicious. The Tonkatsu broth with pork was delicious, served said its bone brother. The pork was super tender but had too many sesame seeds overall. Lastly, we tried the beignets, not my favorite. Dark chocolate and bit plain. Also be warn the chocolate syrup does literally squirt everywhere! I got it on my shirt and pants !!! Haha

Overall loved the place, food and atmosphere!

I haven't been here in about 10 years, now I remember why. I ordered the Beef Sizzling Rice, it was very bland. I tried the Tonkatsu Ramen as well, and it was OK. I didn't get the Nigiri, because $7 for a single peice in the suburbs, and at this place especially is outrageous.

To top it though, in small writing at the bottom of the menu it says "A 3% restaurant surcharge has been added to each guest check. This may be removed upon request." 🤣

Fancied a bit of Japanese / Asian Fusion food for dinner when on business in Schaumburg and so my colleague and I headed to 'TOKIO Pub'. The ambience was nice and casual and the menu had a good selection of Asian dishes with starters, rolls, and rice and Ramen. To start we shared the Red Dragon Rolls, the Crispy Chicken Pot Stickers and Crispy Meat Springs Rolls, all of which were very good. For main course we both had the Pork Belly Ramen which was also good but for me the broth was not creamy like the traditional Pork Belly Ramen that I'm used to... But it was still super tasty. All in all I can recommend TOKIO Pub and I'd certainly not have any issues eating here again.

What made this meal and experience AMAZING was our server- Francesca. She was professional, friendly, and just a truly endearing person. She is an absolute asset to this establishment and we hope they know it! The restaurant itself is small and sparse, chairs aren't the most comfortable, definitely not a luxurious atmosphere- More bar than upscale eatery. Our food was quick, hot, fresh, and very good! My biggest gripe is that they add a 3% upcharge to your bill. In small print at the bottom of your receipt, it says that you can request to have it removed, but who is going to read that when you're wrapping up your meal (AND... after a pitcher of sangria LOL)?! For that reason, I won't be returning as I feel this practice is dishonest and extra charges should be mentioned when you're presented with your bill (not for you to discover later when you're at home and wondering why dinner cost so much). But, if you're in the mood for Asian fare with a twist and you don't mind paying above menu pricing for your food, check this place out- Just be sure to ask for Francesca!

The husband might think it’s just Chinese food, but the wife knows better. If you love hoisin sauce and sushi (and maybe earning some Lettuce points) then this place is your jam. AAAND you can do a bang bang - eat here and then walk through the doorway to Shaws for some real seafood!

Things to try at Tokio Pub (pics included!)
- their take on crab Rangoon in a tempura deep fried sushi rules - it’s the cream cheese your mouth didn’t know it needed!

- volcano roll - made with a soy paper wrap instead of the traditional nori paper. While not the traditional roll, you’ll definitely enjoy the fresh chunks of tuna which gives it a summer roll taste

- pork belly buns - If you love pork belly then it’s business as usual here. Will hit the spot.

- got here in time to try their $1 tacos! Not bad but not worth it. The meat is very over sauced and combined with the pickled slaw it was not the best of flavor combos.

Every dish is essentially $16. We got 5 plus ice tea - $100 for two people.

Will be coming back!

The ramen broth is going to be a lot lighter than you're expecting, but that's not a bad thing. Just don't go in expecting Ramen Misoya style heavy broths.
The beignets are the best part

Side note: if getting the Ramen to go, ask for it in plastic containers instead of the paper ones they use for the dry portions. It sticks to the food and is nearly impossible to get off the noodles.

It’s called Tokio “PUB” I shouldn’t have expected much. If you like authentic Japanese food or ramen do not come here. Even for fusion I expected decent. If you like chain places and noodles and company type places, you may enjoy. The ramen tasted like I elevated a .59cents pack from a grocery store. The noodles and broth were terrible. I was in shock when I got my ramen and they used instant ramen noodles. 1 PACK OF INSTANT NOODLES!!! I was starving!!!! I just read another review that said when they got their ramen it looked like “ au jus.” My broth looked and tasted like water and soy sauce, so yes it looked exactly like au jus. Also aside from
Not being good , it was lukewarm at best. I was so disappointed and dissatisfied. My server francesa was so sweet and so friendly that I didn’t have the heart to send it back. It was also close to kitchen closing so I would hate to delay anyone going home . My husband ordered the dragon roll sushi and he really loved it. We decided to just go eat at Kumas after because we were both still hungry. I can’t believe I paid $60 for dinner to go eat another dinner. Normally ramen stuffs me. Francesca recommended a mixed drink that was absolutely delicious and her energy was the only reason it was a good experience. I would not recommend this place for ramen but for drinks and sushi only. I would recommend adding miso paste to the veggie ramen, having the option for traditional sobu noodles, and should always be brought to a boil before served. Not cold halfway through. Other than that maybe Support a local Japanese or Asian owned business like I wish I had.

The ramen was ok. It was luke warm and didn’t have any spicy, although I did forget to ask for extra chilli oil. It was kinda small portion and low on noodles. The broth was ok not too salty or bland but just doesn’t stand out from the competition around. The pork belly was really good, they should marinate it soy sauce. Definitely nowhere close to Oiistar’s but much better than the traditional chashu pork. Only reason for 4 stars otherwise this is a solid 3 star place.

I was really craving some Ramen and I found this place through Google maps. I called and ordered the pork Ramen to go. I got it home and the soup base was separate from the meats noodles and toppings. And I'm so glad that it was. The soup base was horrible. It's like they have never tried Ramen in their life. It literally tasted like au jus sauce. You can see by the picture that that is literally what it looks like. It was absolutely disgusting and ended up making my own soup base at home just to be able to have dinner. Honestly wish I had read the reviews about the ramen because so many people complained about how salty it is. But it's not even the fact that it's salty.. but it's the fact that it literally tastes nothing like any ramen I have ever tried. And I am obsessed with Japanese food and have had tons of ramen in my life. Honestly "Top Ramen" tastes better than this. Maybe they'll actually pay attention to the reviews of customers and change their Ramen recipe. But until then I cannot stress enough to avoid their Ramen if you come here. Maybe their other food is good.. but definitely not this

This place is trying to be different too hard. Menu items sound good, but do not have a good flavor at all.
The ramen was 0/10. Pork was all fat, broth didn’t taste good at all.
Our second entree was the ramen burger. Again, unique idea, but poor execution. Would recommend adding some type of flavoring to the ramen buns themselves as it currently tastes as if they took out a ramen packet and just never added the seasoning.
Sushi was 5/10.
Drinks were good, especially the mint raspberry mojito- originally a mock tail but requested rum to be added.
Solid idea, poor execution. Good atmosphere, great staff!

The atmosphere is nice, but you should know that if you need to use the rest room, you have to walk through Shaws crab house and go upstairs to use one. The food was okay. We ordered the Wagyu beef that you cook yourself on a hot rock. But the rock doesn't stay hot for very long at all. If you order Edamame, they will fill half the bowl with rice and put just a few edamame on the top. Really stingy antics for the price you pay. Probably won't come back since you can get the same food for cheaper close by.

The vegetable dumpling and the mushroom and tofu ramen were both VERY SALTY and the noodles seemed very cheap for a $16 meal. Definitely I do not recommend trying the ramen at all.

My friends and I had gone here for dinner thinking it was going to be really good. But the only good thing was the edamame. The ramen here tasted like sewer water. And for those reading this and enjoyed the ramen….you guys have never tasted amazing ramen before.
All the other food was not worth it either. Everything was mediocre. Waste of money!

Have eaten here several times over the years, and the level of service and quality of food remain as high as ever. Tonight was surprisingly easy to be seated, with an attendant welcoming us in less than a minute. Food was delivered promptly from appetizers, to entrees, to desserts. Highly enjoyable visit. And wonderful food! Pictured are the Red Dragon Roll and the Shrimp Tempura Ramen.

Seems to be a smaller menu, but all plates are shareable! Filet on a hot rock is fun and tasty, braised pork belly ramen was well balanced and the Volcano roll was good as well. Not too spicy.

We didn't order this time and I regret it. Please try the beignets for dessert!!

Rude caucasion women over phone could not be nice, when i couldn’t pronounce a menu item.. SMH.. it is NOT hard to be kind to people this women should just get fired. Her job is so simple. But putting her negative energy onto ppl cause shes in a bad mood is not right.. especially on a holiday. She ruined my mood instantly. Will not be giving a place business who cant kindly and simply take an order nicely. Is that so hard to ask?!?!?

Kinda underwhelming first experience. Service was perfect by Ryan for sure.

Food was not very special as such. Ramen with shrimp was salty broth. Volcano roll Sushi was ok. Potstickers was good. Veggie ramen was ok. 3% was added automatically(it is there in menu card) for the bill that you can request to take out.

Wanting to try some place new, we decided to give Tokio Pub a whirl.
We were not impressed with the menu. The menu choices and food portions were quite scarce. I decided to order sushi for my entrée. For $16 I got a handful of small pitiful looking rolls that were comparable to what you would get at Jewel. They did not taste or look fresh. Our bill was around $70 and we both left hungry. On the bright side our waiter was fantastic! Sadly we won't be back.

Oh boy where to start. Good atmosphere, clean, and presentation was all fine. The big issue was just the food choices. I was hoping for a more modern Japanese food, but this is a hipster place true and through. Just wacky food "fusions" with a japanese theme. Overpriced for mediocre food or strange fusions to be trendy.
1. Paid 15 bucks for a sushi roll that was just cucumber with a dash of tuna on top. This was the biggest offender
2. One of the saltiest ramen ever. Even used the wrong noodles.
3. Signature Burger was edible.
4. Ordered sake and gave a small teacup for 6 bucks. WHAT?!
5. Buffalo chicken inside a steamed bun...why?
6. Not a single asian person here (should have been my warning when walking in)
7. On a lesser note had no acknowledgement for anniversary despite having reservation.
So yeah, if you know nothing of asian food etc. Ignore this review as the food is edible. For my culture people, avoid...

Update: had abdominal discomfort and pain with the runs all night. Something was not fresh.

6/18/22- Hit them on a Saturday night before a movie. It was not crowded. Food quality is still not where it used to be 3 years ago. Our food came out lukewarm and we waited a long time in between getting our pot stickers appetizer and the main dishes. My rainbow roll was bland and they used imitation crabmeat. The menu said it was crab but it was not and you'd expect it to be real because they share a kitchen with Shaw's Crab House. Even our beignets were barely warm. The bright spot of the meal was the soy ginger chicken with fried ramen noodles. Tasty but barely warm. Not in a rush to return.

Here is my review from 2 years ago- I have been here several times but don't think we'll be coming back for a while. The sushi is good (not great like you can get at a sushi place) and the mini tacos are tasty but the past two visits our hot dishes have come out cold and we have to send them back. On this latest visit we sat in the bar and the kitchen took a long time to prepare what were simple meals. Service was slow and we ended spending an hour and half there- way too long for a couple of tacos and sushi after a movie. After our tacos came out cold they were replaced with a fresh set that were a little warmer. We love their chocolate beignets but even those came out cold and hard.

It was OK. Ramen wasn't the greatest I've ever had. Edamame came out with no salt unfortunately. The hot rock stayed hot and cooked the tuna for only about 5 minutes although they stated it would be good for 15 to 20 minutes. Potstickers were good and the dipping sauce was fantastic. Drinks were tasty! Unfortunately I think they were understaffed, which isn't the servers fault but overall the experience wasn't anything super special.

I truly want to begin by giving the restaurant points for the warm and inviting ambiance and quick seating from the hostess and the red dragon roll and volcano roll delivered what they described on the menu. The quality of drinks and service from there was TOUGH. Tough in the sense that the hot rock appetizer came over without the cucumber salad nor the sauce. Then when brought to the attention of the wait staff there was no resolution or follow through. Like if there is no salad, please don't include it in the description for the appetizer. Also maybe have the wait staff trained on how to serve water to guests as they sit, to try to enhance the overall experience or some kind of check in on how things are going. Mediocre at best.

If I could rate this place at zero stars I would. Any place that serves, burgers, fries, raw meat and fish that you cook on a rock, tacos, ramen, and sushi is not good. You can tell they tried really hard to fuse all these cuisines together but it just doesn’t work. Overall, never coming back, I suggest you do the same.

Recently dined here and had a very pleasant experience.

Started with some appetizers. The Filet Mignon Hot Rock seemed very cool, so we tried that out. 5 pieces of filet, 5 bowls with a hot rock. Put the filet on a hot rock and let it sizzle for about a minute to a minute and a half. It was a very cool and satisfying experience, and it tasted good once cooked! We also had the Calamari--a little spicy but it still tasted very good, and certainly much better than calamari at other restaurants nearby.

Went with the Ramen Burger for dinner. You will need a fork and knife to eat it (its very hard to pick up), but the noodles were cooked perfectly, and I like that they stayed together. The burger was also cooked to the medium rare I asked it to be, and there is a really good sauce on the burger too. Fries were fine that came with it.

Service and atmosphere were pleasant. It has a very modern feel.

Came here very last minute before catching a show at the AMC. The waitress did a fine job with service but the food is not great. The ramen burger needs to be upgraded with ingredients or just removed from the menu. Their chicken meal , which comes with no sides is just fried chicken that wasn’t fully cooked and extremely salty. The best thing were the canned beers and French fries . Seriously. Any place would be better than this. Save your money
