COCKROACH in my food.
This was previously a favorite restaurant for my daughter and I. Until 12/18/24 when we had a cockroach that was fried while hiding in the crease of our crab Rangoon. We dined in for the all you can eat sushi lunch and when we got the appetizer, crab Rangoon, my daughter asked if that was a bug in the food. Naturally I automatically replied no but when I looked there was a fried cockroach clear as day on the crab Rangoon. I told the couple dining next to us and they looked and confirmed it was indeed a cockroach I was looking at. Obviously this ended our lunch. When I told the female server and showed her the roach she said “sorry about that”. My daughter and I left but I’m disgusted when I think of how many roaches must be
running around for there to be one that somehow got fried in our food which is typically stored frozen prior to being cooked. It looked like it was “hiding” in the folded outside part of the Rangoon . I want to puke thinking about all the times we have previously eaten here. I intend to report this to the health department, but for now I will share the pictures as a warning to others.

My fiance wanted to order sushi tonight, but I opted for fried rice and chicken karaage instead. Unfortunately, what I received was CHICKEN NUGGETS.
Look at them. There's no mistaking that those are chicken nuggets. They're even the same shapes as McDonalds nuggets--the circle, the bell, the boot...that one that's vaguely diamond/rhomboid-shaped.
Seriously though, it's laughable and incredibly insulting that a restaurant thought that ultra-processed nuggets were an appropriate substitute for karaage--especially if they thought they could fool an East Asian person who knows full well what karaage is supposed to be.
If they were going to knowingly send along nuggets, the least they could have done was make sure they were fresh. I was annoyed that it wasn't karaage, but I can still get down with some tasty nuggs. But NARP. The breading wasn't remotely crunchy, and it had that off, stale flavor that suggested it had sat in a musty back room for several hours. Did they run out of karaage and give me their leftover lunch in a panic instead? Because that's what it tasted like. If I had known this would be my experience, I would have just run out to the golden arches and gotten myself a proper 10-piece.
Oh yeah, the fried rice was odd too. It didn't taste bad per se, but the flavor was more akin to pilaf. Just an extremely bizzare, disjointed, and altogether disappointing experience. If my fiance suggests ordering from here again we're going to fight about it.
Not literally of course. But there will be a heated exchange of words.

I ordered the King Roll off Uber eats from this restaurant. It wasn’t pleasant. I’m not even a picky eater and I tend to love sushi all around. From the grocery store, buffets, five star restaurants, you could usually never disappoint. However, this wasn’t very good. First, the presentation wasn’t appealing. It’s almost unrecognizable as a sushi roll. What made it gross was the crab with mayo sauce on top. It was a very thick layer. I don’t know anyone who eats that much mayonnaise. It was a lot of cream cheese as well and it wasn’t cold which is also a deterrent because no one likes warm cream cheese unless it’s melting on a bagel. It was a very thin layer of rice between it all as well. It just didn’t taste like Sushi should. Ot tasted like biting into a mayo donut. Not a lot of actual fish being eaten. The crab was very far from natural.

The best sushi from Schaumburg to Indiana, we do a lot of driving and stop at many places, but this place has the best sushi and kind staff. The only thing that would make this better is adding more of the vegetarian options like veggie deluxe roll and tofu skin nigiri to the all you can eat menu

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Honkaku Sushi with my in-laws on a double business date, and I have to say, the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we stepped in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for both casual dining and professional discussions.
The sushi? Absolutely divine. Every bite showcased the freshness of the ingredients and the artistry of the chefs. If you're a sushi lover or even just testing the waters, GO HERE FOR SUSHI! The flavors were impeccable, and the presentation was stunning—almost too beautiful to eat!
The service was also top-notch, with staff who were attentive without being intrusive. They made sure our drinks were always full and provided great recommendations from the menu.
Honkaku Sushi is not just a place to eat; it's an experience. Whether you're planning a date night, a family outing, or a business meet-up, this spot is a win. Highly recommend it, and I’ll definitely be returning soon!

My family and I have dined here at least five times, and each visit has been wonderful, particularly the food and service. We especially appreciate their all-you-can-eat sushi. My nephew introduced us to this restaurant, and while it's a 30-45 minute drive, we find it worthwhile.

I really like their Miso Soup, but their sushi rolls and nigiri are rather lacking in quality. The sushi rolls were falling apart & the salmon nigiri I ordered had an odd texture and flavor, so I ended up spitting it out for fear of getting sick from it.

When you can get the food here it’s not bad. But our family has had multiple issues with online ordering where it is initially estimated for 30 mins and ends up taking an hour or so. Additionally the listed phone number doesn’t work so you just have to hope they’ll eventually make your order. The service when you dine in is not very quick either.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! This place was a huge letdown 😭. The food tasted off and seemed old, which is the last thing you want from a sushi restaurant - the worst sushi I’ve ever had in my life. Even the soda was bad! The service was even worse—the waitress gave me attitude the entire time, kept her distance when I tried to ask for something, never checked in, and was downright rude.

Not sure what happened tonight- we order takeout from here pretty often and tonight’s order was very off. I ordered 3 rolls and gyoza. The gyoza was good, the rolls were not. The sushi rice was dry and undercooked, some pieces still had crunch to them and the rice was falling off the rolls. The chef had to have noticed this and chose to serve it regardless of the quality. Disappointing, especially for the price. We won’t be ordering from here again.

I have to agree with another reviewer, sushi almost unrecognizable, and caked with layers of mayo. There’s just something else off about it as well. I’ve never experienced sushi that left me this disappointed.

Food came and was super tasty but the service is horrific. All the servers are were too busy on their cell phones watching videos or talking to each other.
This place also needs some TLC. Looks like the place hasn’t been wiped down or cleaned properly in a long time either

This is my fav place for all-you-can-eat sushi.
We stopped going for a few years because there was a manager who was always pushing alcohol on us. We had friends come and he opened a brand new bottle of some sort of dark liquor and forced it into one of our friends faces.. he was always making inappropriate jokes, too.
Now that he’s gone, it’s been way better. Back to normal and 10/10 great in every way. It’s very high quality sushi, too! Most AYCE places are low quality but this place has the best and more generous portions!

The place itself has a great vibe to it, but unfortunately the food and service was abismal. The Bao we got was the only thing that was actually enjoyable. I had to chase down the waiter to be able to get anything and was told there’s a lot of people, not sorry about the wait. We sat down at 9pm and didn’t get food until 10pm which is unacceptable. The sushi was awful. The salmon was incredibly squishy and the Prawns tasted nasty and fake. The tuna was flavorless and overall we had an awful experience. Sad to see that a sushi restaurant on the ocean is this bad.

I ordered the lunch special earlier in the day because they usually have a good lunch special. I ate two rolls and after I ate the second roll, I found a staple under the sushi. I called the restaurant to report it and speak to a manager. Apparently the manager was off and there was only one person that could speak on the phone because he is the only one that speaks English. They told me to call tomorrow and make my complaint. I have never been this appalled by the service I was provided today. Usually it’s a good experience, but after today I will no longer be ordering from this sushi restaurant because they are not accountable for the mistakes they made.

You'd think waiting for sushi is like waiting for rain in a drought, but at Honkaku Sushi, it's more like waiting for a snail on sedatives. Forty agonizing minutes for a sushi plate during lunch break turned a hungry lunch hour into a hangry ordeal. By the time it arrived, I barely had time to wolf down a few rolls before rushing back to work. Left feeling like a sushi-deprived survivor in a sea of missed opportunities. Quality was alright, but next time, I'll pack my own lunch and skip this slow-motion sushi marathon.

It is very poor service, no quality no respect no care. I did it once , I will never repeat it. Moreover we wait for our bill for more than 15 minutes and when we went out of the restaurant one of the staff run after us and asked if we paid. Since we left cash money on the table. Not recomended. It is a big shame.

I really went back & forth before posting this Review (my dining experience was back in mid-December '21). The food, for the most part, tasted good, the sevice was quick and the portions were HUGE! So, why the ⭐️⭐️ Rating? Well, there's a little more to the story...
For the record, I'm a big guy who REALLY loves sushi, so I'm always on the lookout for a good all-you-can-eat place.
On a whim I stopped-in at Honkaku, early afternoon, on a weekday & had the place to myself (i.e. it's not like they were busy/swamped). I was pleased to see their AYCE menu had a nice selection of Rolls, along with Appetizers & Nigiri and I ordered 6 Rolls plus a fried calamari Appetizer. The waiter, with a condescending tone, asked "Are you sure you want to order so much?" I said I did & he replied, "You know, we charge full price for anything you don't finish?" I thanked him for his concern & he walked away saying, "Okaaay..." Unfortunately, things kinda went downhill from there:
- they misread my order & instead of calamari, I got some kind of fried octopus ball. Not bad, but not the Appetizer I'd ordered.
- when I mentioned the mistake, the waiter brought me calamari, but it wasnt "rings." Honestly, it l/l they took several pieces of squid nigiri & deep-fried 'em; incredibly tough to chew & impossible to bite into pieces; horrible!
- when the Rolls came out, all were waaay over-stuffed with rice; nearly as thick as my wrist & drowning in their toppings/sauces.
What's more, the Chef had ADDED copious amounts of Cream Cheese to 3 of the Rolls (understand, the menu description did not list cream cheese as an ingredient, it was added solely as "filler") - it was clear they were angry I'd ordered "too much" & were hoping I'd have to pay the Full Price Penalty for each Roll I couldn't finish (the Rolls were $13-$15/ea.)!
As I ate, the waiter kept stopping-by to ask how everything was & if I was "Getting full, yet?"
I got thru 4 of the rolls and was just about stuffed; only 2 of the cream cheese-packed rolls were left.
The waiter stopped-by, again, to remind me uneaten rolls were charged full price. I asked him to confirm/identify which 2 Rolls I had left and, when he did, I asked why the Chef had ADDED CREAM CHEESE to them when it wasn't on the menu!?? He replied, smugly, "Oh, DID he? I guess you can take it out."
Well, w/o the additional ½-package of cream cheese, I was juuust able to finish the remaining 2 Rolls. Without exaggeration, those 6 Rolls easily amounted to 12 "normal-sized" rolls (FWIW, a new PB for me!!!)
Needless to say, the waiter appeared unhappy that I'd avoided paying an extra $30 and said, "I hope you liked it, we made it very special for you."
I replied that, "I know exactly what you did," left a 5% tip and waddled out the door... It was an utterly outrageous and offensive experience and I'm sure both myself & Honkaku are glad I won't be back.
Final thought: Why do you offer "all-you-can-eat" if you're gonna hassle/try to hustle customers who take you up on it?
For $30, you lost a sushi-loving repeat customer who will relate the experience whenever talk of "where to go for sushi" comes up... 😔

Horrible service! Ordered online for pickup. ETA was 15-30 minutes. Got there 30 minutes. Order was not ready and they said to wait for 5 minutes.
15 minutes later I asked again and was told to wait another 5. After that tome was up the sushi still not ready and hostess took me to ask the chef himself how much longer. He said 10 more minutes. So in total I waited after their ETA another 40 minutes inside. Do not bother going there! Food is not that great to wait for such a long time.

I will never eat here again. I'm sure they will not notice my absence, but after the debacle yesterday, I will not indulge their piss poor service any more. I've gone here for years and my expectations for service are realistic. It's decent food and I'm there for the all you can eat sushi. Service has historically been sub par with most wait staff appearing "indifferent" to their customers. Last night, Valentines Day, I took my wife to dinner there. We arrived at 7, they took our first order at 7:30, and by 9:11 I never got served any sushi. Two hours and eleven minutes. The young lady "serving" us did provide me with 3 cups of pepsi. I asked my wife if she would rather leave and she agreed. I told the occupants of the next table who had arrived about 20 minutes prior that we'd been there and had not yet eaten and they might be in for a long wait. The most irritating part was that they had 3 sushi chefs and one server focusing on take out orders. They were cranking those out with military efficiency while dining room customers who likely paid for that all-you-can-eat deal sure didn't eat all they could. The waitress offered to prepare it to go. I asked where is it. Like, it isn't in the oven. How long does it take to prepare 12 pieces of sushi. I figure the pepsi was the price of ruining our evening.

Never in my life have I felt compelled to leave a review for a restaurant but truly I have never experienced such poor service and quality of food in my entire life. Me and my girlfriend decided to treat ourselves this Valentine's Day by ordering takeout from Honkaku we knew they typically have longer wait times so we ordered an hour prior to our arrival after arriving we were told it would be 15 more minutes for our food to be ready for us.
WE WAITED 2 AND A HALF HOURS we stood in the restaurant I even asked the hostess if she could check when my order would be ready I then proceeded to watch her do a million other things and never come back until another half hour later she gave me my order.
When getting home half of the food was either Frozen cold or warm which is dangerous with raw fish so clearly they made the order and then let it sit for 2 hours.
If you're looking for a good place to get sushi find somewhere else it is not worth your time I hope this restaurant closes down.

Every time I go there, they take a bit too long for the order, so this time I decided to order to go. I don't know the names of each role by memory. When I showed the picture of what I wanted to the server, she didn't know either, didn't want to ask the chef, and kept pushing me to order a popular roll instead.

Food was par. Previous reviews about long wait time are accurate. Restaurant space was not well organized. Although we sat by the front door, I feel we were out of the views of the employees. When being seated, the host picked up a menu that was on the floor, and stepped on by the people who we're leaving as we walked by, and placed it on the table on our chopsticks and places. I got sushi AYCE and my friend got chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki took 45 minutes to come out, and my friend said tasted poorly. I told my waiter I had a shellfish allergy and he asked me, "why come to a sushi restaurant with a shellfish allergy?" To which I said because I like fish. He didn't take old dishes pushed to the from of the table until passing them over 2 or 3 visits to our table. He didn't fill water until asked. I only order AYCE once off one sheet, and two of the items I ordered on the sheet never came.
I might get take out here again, but am likely never to dine-in again.

This place has really gone down hill the last 1-2 years. I Took a party of 10 people here for all you can eat sushi, they put us in the “VIP room” and the server only came to talk to us 3 times the entire time we were there. (We had to give our check and credit card to the hostess to ring up because our waiter was no where to be found.
When he came in to take our order, he literally told us he forgot we were here (waited 25+ mins for him to come take our order) real “VIP experience” 🙄
He also told us “clear your own table and just put all your used dishes on the table next to yours” because he didn’t want to come back to take dishes away.
He told us their liquor license was not current so we couldn’t order drinks and even the sushi was not as good as it usually is.

Been coming here for 3 years! The sushi is always amazing. Today I used the bathroom for the first time, though. A cockroach crawled up on the toilet seat which freaked me out and made me loose my appetite. If they can do maintenance on the bugs and furniture, it could be the perfect sushi place. The staff is great! But that freaked me out.

I go pretty often because it's my favorite sushi place by far. I always get the all you can eat which usually leaves me total to ~$40 and I leave a $10 tip. The staff have always been extremely nice and welcoming and the atmosphere is always calm and welcoming. The food is amazing and I always recommend it when someone asks for sushi recommendations. The price is worth it imo as I love the snow mountain roll and the appetizers that come with the all you can eat. Can't recommend highly enough. I plan to go again sometime soon

The rating of this place is 3.8 as I write this review, but I think this score can be much lower. The food is horrendous. Based on other comments here, it seems like it had a different owner before, which explains the 5 star ratings. Most one star ratings are from recent one year, which explains a lot.

Given this place 4 tries now. 3 of the four tries, the service has been awful and inattentive. Most recently, it took 20 minutes to even get us glasses of water (table for two). There is NO urgency in the service for this place, no speed, and every time it’s “sorry for the wait” or “we’re low staffed” but we’re watching staff members prioritize pick-up orders. I don’t know how many times on a Friday or Saturday night that can be an excuse - weekend nights will always be busy. If you go and get All You Can Eat, expect to be waiting 40+ minutes for your sushi (and you may have to remind them about your apps and drinks too). They will NOT stagger deliver your orders. If you want to try, I recommend only ordering 1 or 2 rolls at a time.
The only saving grace is that the dinner sushi is delicious and fresh, have never had a fishy tasting order. It’s really well made. We’ve never had their lunch sushi or any of their other foods (the udon looks really good).
I don’t think I’ll be going back because the service and wait is so bad.

Now I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to sushi having lived in Hawaii for years. Taking into consideration that this location is in Illinois, the price and quality is fair. Nothing earth shattering, nothing that gave me food poisoning or sent up major red flags. Just some ok AYCE sushi.
Short staffed with 1-2 people trying to accomplish everything in the front of the house at peak times. Service is a bit slow but accurate and they're still polite.
I'll probably go back one day just to chow down on endless gyoza and a sushi roll.

Food and service is great, but we have to wait long periods of time to get the food even when I ordered everything in 1 order, and the restaurant wasn't busy at all, just 4 tables! No bueno!

One of the best sushi places I've ever been to! The all-you-can-eat price is absolutely worth it, as it includes appetizers and dessert. The fish tastes extremely fresh, you're able to see the chefs prepare it depending on where you sit. There's also an excellent variety of different specialty rolls. This place is also very accommodating of allergy requests; my partner requested no avocado on one of their rolls, and the chefs were happy to comply.

This place is amazing! All sushi rolls are handmade and the presentation is terrific! You can order "a la carte" or do the "All You Can Eat" for lunch or dinner. Lunch has restrictions on which things are included, but the dinner does not. The "All You Can Eat" includes appetizers, soups, salads, Nigeri, and a variety of rolls. It is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it.
The service does take a bit longer to get your food out to you due to everything being made on the spot, but the staff makes sure you're checked on and they are super friendly. When we get sushi we always share so we put all rolls on one ticket and was delivered to our table on a bamboo boat. My kids and I really enjoyed ourselves with with the whole experience. The atmosphere was very calm and happy. The food and service were great! All in all I highly recommend trying this place out.

I have been a regular at Honkaku Sushi for several months now, and I am always amazed by the quality of the food and the service. The staff are always funny and caring, and they go above and beyond to make sure that I have a great dining experience every time. I especially love the all-you-can-eat prices, which are very reasonable considering the amazing selection of sushi and other dishes that are available. I would highly recommend Honkaku Sushi to anyone who loves sushi and great customer service.

My friend and I randomly stopped by since we’re in the area. We gave it a shot for this all you can eat sushi on north avenue. It was $22.99/ person. We got sat right away with no wait. Restaurant was not busy so everything came out pretty quick. Our server was very attentive and helpful with the selections. Food was good, decent portion and great value for the price we have paid. The appetizers were Fantastic! We ordered fried oyster, yaki chicken, shumai, salad ika, spicy kani salad, miso soups, all delicious! And fresh! The rolls that they offered were basic rolls no fancy rolls but pretty good. Ordered shitake ( mushroom tempura) I wish spicy scallop roll was more like chuck scallop not chopped up one. 🍣 all fresh, no fishy smell! Dessert; fried banana, green tea and vanilla ice cream were tasty! Overall service was good! We need more good and affordable local restaurant in the neighborhood.

This place is awesome. The service is great. This place is very busy. If you coming over it's about 15 to 30 minute wait. Well worth it. The food is freshly prepared. Some of the best sushi around... Definitely recommend. They also have a private room for rent.

Honkaku is OUTSTANDING. The service, the food… 10000/10. We are blown away! Came as a party or 4 to celebrate my parents 28 year anniversary. They love sushi and I had heard good things from some friends about Honkaku. I am so glad I listened to them! We put away some 10 signature rolls and over 20 nigiri. Absolutely delicious. I cannot say how impressed I am by the service. Genuine, caring, excited staff that care about your experience and want you to feel at home at their restaurant. I have been to Michelin star restaurants with worse service than Honkaku… They have won themselves loyal customers.
My parents can’t stop raving about the service and food, and they are HUGE sushi snobs. For the price, you can’t beat this place. We’ve been to some other AYCE sushi places in the suburbs, but now with the quality and variety as Honkaku and maybe in the $20s range. At Honkaku there was a delicious variety of specialty/signature rolls that made the price so so worth it. Come on a Saturday night with your family or friends, I highly highly recommend. We can’t wait to come back simply because of the service and food quality/variety.
Take note: $35 per person means that to make it worth it you need to eat at least 2 signature rolls per person plus maybe some nigiri, appetizers, soup, etc. If you’re not hungry, the $35 a person won’t feel like it’s worth it.

Please don't go here. This was our spot before covid. Loved It. Now this place is a disgrace. Fruit Flies everywhere. Look inside the soysause container if you are there. Also in the soup. They were everywhere. We no longer come here.

Not worth $35. We still go to AYCE located in the city and while the menu is comparable, the price is not. Service was good and food came out on time. I'm also disappointed that shumai is deep fried, not steamed. I dined with w a 3yo and a 6 yo, and they both paid half the adult price. It was an "expensive" AYCE sushi meal. We weren't about to get green tea ice cream because it was located in the deep freezer and was not able to scoop.

This is a lovely restaurant with very friendly staff. I am surprised someone complained about the wait time as every time I have been here the service is super fast! I wasn’t expecting amazing quality for all you can eat sushi but the sushi pieces are really good quality and thr rolls are very tasty. I highly recommend.

Absolutely disgusting. By looking at the photos you'll see why. This place is infested with cockroaches. There was one on my friends food and the rest of my other friends were wondering if our food was infected with roaches as well. This made us disgusted and worried about our health. We came here months before and we remembered hearing another lady saying that there was a cockroach in her food as well. It seems like we're not the only people who have experienced this before. We're never coming back here again.
