Chef/owner just sits at tables to drink beer while the other cooks are in the weeds.

Amazing sushi, one of their vinagraitte mix with peach gives an amazing flavor on the sushi. I love everything they served. Will come back for sure. Never regret to taste their signature’s handmade sushi. Absolute best worth the price 🤘

Do the Tanoshii omakase. Fish and chip, seared tuna, fresh wasabi roll, salmon truffle roll, Italian roll, and spicy roll. Probably one more than we needed for two people, but worth it. The Italian was intriguing, but probably the only one I wouldn’t order again.

Sometimes I want to fly to Chicago just for Tanoshi. I come here EVERY time I visit Chicago and have yet to find a place local to me that even comes close. The creativity and taste matched with the perfect balance of rice and fish in each roll is unparalleled. I crave these rolls and quite literally make this the highlight of my trip.

My wife came here a few years ago (pre pandemic) with her work group and was very impressed with the ambience, food and service. Since she is a vegetarian, the chef went out of his way to create a little something special and vegetarian for her. Since then, she's been wanting to take me here and we finally made it here about 3 weeks ago.

The service was EXCELLENT. The servers that were taking care of us made sure our water glasses were not empty. The recommendations were fantastic; they knew their stuff really well.

As for the food; honestly, I didn't quite think it was out of the ordinary for me. The miso soup had the wakame (YES, FINALLY I SEE WAKAME. RAMEN SHOPS NEED TO USE WAKAME. HAVE YET TO FIND ONE RESTAURANT THAT SERVES WAKAME IN THEIR RAMEN) so that made my day. I ordered the sashimi dinner which was presented BEAUTIFULLY.

I did try my wife's vegetarian sushi too; forgive me I forget what it was but it was prepared with utmost beauty. The top had avocado that was PERFECTLY shaped to match the width of the sushi itself so it didn't look sloppy. It had been topped with sesame seeds (nice touch). I think this sushi was probably the best part of the entire meal (and it was recommended by the server)

Would I come back again? I am not 100% sure. I almost feel that there are other options that are far less expensive for nearly the same quality of food. Any inputs?

What a lovey and intimate sushi spot! If you can, definitely sit at the counter to soak in the snug and cozy vibe. The food was delightful. We started with the fish & chips appetizer—a playful dish where the server mixed fish and served it on a chip (resembling a tiny pizza). The seared tuna salad was refreshing with a subtle smokiness. Among the rolls, we particularly enjoyed the toro truffle and the shiitake roll.

We chose the omakase style and let the chef select our dishes. Just note that the bill is itemized, so you pay for each item rather than a fixed price.

Tanoshii serves some of the best sushi I've ever had. I've been here 4 or 5 times and it always impresses. I enjoy ordering "omakase" (chef's choice) because it gives me the opportunity to try things I might not otherwise order.

I had the pleasure of being served by Sushi Mike over at Union Sushi, and he invited my friend and I to stop by Tanoshii. Mike, if you read these, sorry we didn't pick Thursday when you were in, we've been busy!

Anyways, these folks are amazing. They've got a cool philosophy with their menu where you can order "omakase," which you are leaving your sushi order up to the chefs. Basically give them your diet restrictions and they come back with a few rolls, nigiri, and an appetizer completely off menu/unique.

Oh, and the place is BYOB.

Don't let the mediocre presentation fool you because despite the way they slice and roll, sashimi dinner and wasabi roll surprised us with it's freshness. Recommend sticking with the special rolls because wasabi roll was just way better than the rainbow or chicago roll. Seared tuna was ok and it looked much better than it tasted. Mixed flavors with sesame oil never gave us the wow sensation.

Service was awesome.
Byob charge is 3 per person.
They have a strict way of eating the special rolls without soy sauce or ginger.

came here last night, on a saturday night
it was so packed! but the servers was on the fly
give us everything we need just when we needed
vibes was warm and homey small local restaurant

sat on the bar and let the chef made the food for you (omakase way)
mind you, omakase is never CHEAP
and eating sushi in GENERAL is not CHEAP tho not expensive if u just order from the regular menu
we had 2 signature appz
fish n chips & seared tuna salad
lemme tell u those were so yumm and refreshing
after that we had 2 signature rolls
fresh wasabi roll & salmon truffle roll
everything was fresh and the sauces was something i've never tried before
and the sashimi cut pretty thick, the otoro just melt in your mouth
after that we had toro truffle roll their "todays special"
it felt like i was eating wagyu beef tho it was all fish in it!
and the server gave us complementary mochi ice cream

at the end our bill was only $150 something for 2 ppl
which is not expensive at all for omakase
and we left with a full belly, which i've never had after having omakase
and (psst! dont forget to bring your own bottle) that was the "cheapest way" part, compare to buy $30-40/bottle of wine in a restaurant

will obv come back!

This place was recommended by friends so we were excited to try their omakase dinner. Upon being seated at the bar, we were immediately thrown off by the ambiance and presentation - the playlist was akin to the rock music you hear at a supermarket, the fish was pre-sliced in plastic bowls within the sushi bar, and the restrooms were lackluster with paper towel rolls on top of the toilet to dry your hands. Our waitress explained to us that omakase starts with their signature spicy tuna salsa chip, which was essentially flavorless tuna, lemon juice, tomatoes and avocado that she put on plastic gloves to mash and mush together before packing this concoction into an unappealing pink mound on top of a tortilla chip. We then received sliced peppercorn ahi tuna on top of a bed of lettuce which was nice, but pretty small. After that, we shared two rolls, which were pretty bland and similar to each other. Both had imitation crab and fish that tasted pretty similar to what I would get at a supermarket sushi bar. My husband and I decided to cut our losses and tap out before we ended up spending too much money on what had thus far been a pretty disappointing meal. Our waitress was disappointed and said that we would have received sashimi and nigiri next- I would’ve loved to have had that first, since the initial rolls they gave us made a pretty awful impression. To top it all off, we were shocked to see our final bill was nearly $120 - apparently the rolls we hated so much were $30 each! Will not be returning here again and would not recommend.

Tanoshii {Andersonville) was very busy. Our party of 2 had 7:30 reservations and were seated at the bar (by request), shortly thereafter. As far as ordering, and after talking to the chef, we decided to trust the team that evening as opposed to enjoying our meal from the menu like most places. This can be an expensive proposition, depending on appetite, be prepared. As it turns out, deciding to trust the capable hands of the staff there that night was the right choice, we were not disappointed. Daniel was our chef, and Noah the Sous, Dika and Alberto the assistants. All 4 worked as a flawless team. The incredible theater that took place in front of us has shown us a new experience in sushi. Never seeing a menu, never using soy sauce, and never touching the green horseradish that Americans call Wasabi - we put our trust into Daniel and he delivered. If the translation of Tanoshii is "pleasant", it had been that and more. Chef Mike, owner and operator of Tanoshii, I would like to propose new names for future restaurants you may open... If you could please translate: "Mouth orgasm" and/or "Brilliantly delightful".

This place has mainly pretty good sushi, but we got the omakase and the service was so slow we got 4 plates in 2 hours, which I think probably nullifies the omakase status, although I don’t know what the rules are on that or even whether there are rules. Basically it wasn’t really a great experience because we kind of felt trapped to stay there because we were still hungry but we wanted to leave at some point. A bit like a purgatory with refreshments. All in all the food was pretty good, although they made a truffle thing which was so overwhelmed with truffle that it felt unfair on the fish. I guess from our experience alone I’m unsure why people would like this place so much, especially as food in Chicago is generally so good. The chefs seemed nice which is cool.

The owner was belligerently drunk, condescending, and rude. He was very pretentious about his sushi, and berated me for ordering the chicken katsu. Initially I thought this was some poor attempt at humor. Then he shot me dirty looks, flipped me off, and indicated multiple times that I should leave. When I finally did leave, it came as some relief. If you feel the compulsion to try out this restaurant, make sure you don't sit at the counter, or you might find yourself being reprimanded for breaking the rules of Japanese cuisine that an intoxicated person made up.

I brought my kids (3&6) here for an early dinner and we had a great time. The sushi was exceptional and included some of the best nigiri I've ever had. I really appreciated how family friendly the service was. Our kids enjoyed watching the sushi get made and talking with the chef, who was so friendly and answered all their questions.

They have sushi at many price points, with the simple rolls costing less than $10 and some sophisticated options costing much more, but it's not necessary to blow your budget just to have a great meal.

We've already gotten takeout, and that was excellent too.

CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS!
Food was great, place was a bit noisy, but overall it was a good experience. Until the end.
When I signed the bill at the end, I was not presented with a copy to take home, so I took a photo. I got the bill digitally a few hours later, and I was charged more than my bill (not just a typo, but 2 different numbers). Was it an honest mistake? Maybe. But when I am not presented a copy of the receipt and there is more than just a simple typo, it makes me wonder if this happens often or on purpose. After several calls, I was refunded the difference, but the frustration and effort to get this resolved means I will not be returning.

I’ve eaten here pre-COVID, and it was really good and fun. Just had a date night here tonight, and we’ll never be back. It was honestly ridiculous. We arrived at 8 with a reservation put our full order in at 8:15 and didn’t get any of our food until 9:15 except edamame. We got 3 rolls and 4 pieces of nigiri. The nigiri came out last. All of the food was sloppy and falling apart. The nigiri was basically leftovers. I think they are just taking more reservations than they can handle and our server lost our order or something. We complained multiple times watching people arrive and eat and leave before we got anything. We will never go back. Terrible service. Ruined our night. Sushi was mediocre.

My overall grade for Tanoshii is: A

Their sushi is great - and of course to me is the most important aspect of this restaurant.

We ordered omakasi for the table and were rewarded with a great night of great food.

The only thing I wish would've been different besides having Sushi Mike actually be our chef was, they brought 2 rolls for the table which gave each person at least 2 or 3 pieces per roll. In our previous experiences, we much more enjoy 1 or 2 pieces per roll per person. This we find, lends the night to trying much more variety of food.

Again - the food is amazing.

Please remember, it's a BYOB restaurant. We brought sake and white wine to have with our meal.

You won't be disappointed - great spot.

Salmon and tuna are good barometers. Both were just normal. It's not bad for sure, but not exceptional. Great staff though.

LOVED IT is an understatement. Without hyperbole, top 5 meal/experience of my life. Didn't order as much as asked chef Mike for Omakasee approach. The food flavor was 5 star, food presentation was 5 star and experience was whatever comes above 5 star. BYOB & Miller Lite for Chef

Fantastic food and service. Would suggest the chefs experience option. Just make sure you either keep track or tell them to stop 1 roll before yours done.

This is such a cute neighborhood gem! The food is delicious. We had the gyoza and fish and chips as appetizers, and a few sushi rolls for the main course. The service was also great! We will definitely be coming back!

I went on a Saturday to have dinner with a friend. The place itself feels very homey. No fancy ambiance but with close seating and byob the casual environment feels comfortable.

We ordered the fish and chips and gyoza to start, which was very good. I highly recommend both. For my sushi I went with the spicy roll and can’t wait to go back to have it again. Huge bonus is that the restaurant is byob. If you bring a cold drink like white wine the server will bring out an ice bucket. Brining your own wine makes for a much more cost effective sushi night. I can’t wait to go back!

Love this place. The rolls are very well thought out and executed. The nigiri is perfection. You can tell everything is super fresh and done with precision. Even the miso soup, gyoza, and shumai appetizers were great.
Definitely a solid choice for sushi night! Added BYOB bonus

This was my family’s favorite restaurant for about 10 years. I left thousands of dollars there. Never got a thank you from the owner, neither hi or good bye. Many times I have closed my eyes to the quality of service because they make really great sushi. But their servers do not speak English, except an occasional one, there is NO freakin soap in the bathrooms, you have to wait forever for your order to be ready. I took my wife for a dinner for her birthday, we waited about 45 minutes, the table next to us got served first although they arrived after us. After patiently waiting, we got wrong order. Instead of remaking it, we were informed that they are out of ingredients. Cheap, poor and wrong treatment of long time customers! Very disappointed…

Had Tuesday 7:30pm reservation. We asked for a check at 8:30pm when we were served one order of fish and chips. Host was extremely rude. I take my family there regularly. Been disappointed several times and left before but by far this was the worst service and host. May be done at this point.

This place was absolutely delicious. I got the Omakase and explained that I didn't want àny rice. I was served seared tuna with glass noodles, greens and a mango dressing. My homie got spicy tuna roll and a nigiri flight. Edamame for the table. Really fresh.

My wife is a huge fan of sushi, and because of that, we are constantly trying different sushi spots around the city. We came across Tanoshii when searching to top sushi in Chicago, and decided to stop by for a Saturday dinner.

We were greeted by a friendly waitress/host upon entering, and were attended to pretty quickly. A standout of the meal was the service provided, as the waitress never allowed my glass of water to be empty prior to refilling it, and was consistently pouring more when I finished about half, so kudos there! The place was neatly and purposely decorated, providing a very authentic Japanese feel to the restaurant. After a few minutes reviewing the digital menu, we decided to start with the cheekily named Fish and Chips (an original creation from the Executive Chef, Sushi Mike), and I had the Spicy Roll (another Sushi Mike special) as my main entrée along with a scallop nigiri and chutoro nigiri, while my wife decided to go with an Andersonville Roll and Spider Roll.

I didn't really know what to expect from the Fish and Chips, and was even more bewildered when the dish itself was brought out. The waitress asked us if we had the dish before, and we said no. She took the reigns and began mixing the ingredients of the plate together, creating wonderful mishmash of tuna, avocado, red tobiko, and pico de gallo, which was then split and placed on top of two formidable tortilla chips. The appetizer tasted delicious, and in particular, I appreciated the additional texture the tobiko provided to each bite. After we cleaned up our appetizers, the Maki was brought out. I was excited to taste the Spicy Roll as I was a fan of the Fish and Chips, and wanted to see what else Sushi Mike's mind came up with. The roll tasted fantastic and had a perfect heat to it; no additional Wasabi or soy sauce needed. The fish tasted fresh, the roll held well together, and all together made for a great bite!

I tried the Andersonville and Spider rolls my wife had, and they were fairly typical of what you would expect, with an added freshness to it. The same can also be said about the nigiri, where the chutoro was my preferred of the two. While good, the rolls and nigiri did not have the "wow" factor Sushi Mike's concoctions had, though, you will pay a premium for that creativity compared to the other rolls on the menu.

Overall, our meal was delicious and left satisfied. I would love to come back again to try more of Sushi Mike's specialties, as the two we had were unique and flavorful. A second visit might be in the near future!

We had a reservation for a party of around 10. The size of our party, combined with a busy Friday night, may have played into our experience.

The table decided to do the omakase menu. The server provided an excellent explanation for those who were unfamiliar with it and answered all of our questions. Two rolls, about 10-12 pieces per roll were brought to the table every 15-20 minutes -- each person ate 2-3 pieces per course. I ordered additional nigiri that I had to ask the server for a 2nd time before it was brought over.

The sushi was excellent, well-balanced, and the temperature of the rice and fish were perfect. I was underwhelmed by the lack of nigiri and sashimi present in this particular omakase. It has been my experience that omakase consists primarily of nigiri and sashimi with rolls being served sparingly. However, as omakase means "I leave it up to you" I cannot hold this against them.

The rolls we received were delicious -- unfortunately each course was sent out just a bit too slow for our liking. In almost 2 hours each of us had only eaten 5-7 pieces. It was a busy Friday night and we were understanding, but we were also very hungry and after the 3rd course we made the decision to ask for the check and head down the street to Parson's.

I gave 4 stars because the potential for this to be a great sushi restaurant is there. I believe it already may be, and probably does live up to its reputation. Our experience was soured by long wait times in-between courses, small portions for our group's size, and unfortunately, poor service from our server. While he was knowledgeable, he was not very attentive and we had to track him down several times. I have a great deal of respect for waitstaff these days but I felt he saw our table as an easy tip and neglected us for his other tables.

That said, I will be revisiting Tanoshii for another meal and expect to revise my rating to 5 stars. Dining with large groups is tricky and I truly believe this was a one off incident. I'm certain sitting directly at the bar and avoiding having to deal with the waitstaff will drastically improve my next experience.

I've been a fan of Sushi Mike since he first opened his Andersonville locale. Went today first time since pandemic and glad to find him at the top of his game and the restaurant full. Do yourself a favor and don't order from the menu. Instead, reserve bar seating and ask for the Mike Special. If you like sushi, you will not be disappointed. So fresh and well-cut.
