A solid neighborhood sushi joint w/ excellent service and good value for money, Sushi Hall hits the sweet spot between casual and quality that most sushi places don’t seem to nail. The food is consistently good, and with a few small tweaks could be great:
- Dragon roll: on the smaller side, which isn’t bad, but a bit imbalanced - could use more shrimp tempura, less avocado
- Spicy tuna hand roll: nice heat level, but would be better served with cubed tuna instead of this finely chopped texture
- Inari: generously filled with a nice, thin tofu skin; one of the best inari I’ve had in Chicago. Only wish the tofu was a little bit colder and the rice had more sushi vinegar, it was a bit underseasoned
The staff here are really great - warm & welcoming, with fast service, and it’s a pleasure to watch Chef Mitch working behind the sushi counter

My wife found out about this restaurant because of Josh Moulton on TikTok, so we decided to give it a shot. The rolls are outstanding, prices are very reasonable, and everything we tasted was delicious. The new spicy garlic edamame was amazing and we hope chef Mitch keeps it on the menu!
Love that the restaurant vibe is understated and relaxed. It's very peaceful and it's clear that the owners want your focus to be on the food and not some dressed-up loop restaurant. This is our new favorite sushi restaurant in the city!

On 7/24 I had the pleasure of attending a sushi-making class at Sushi Hall with my team, and it was an experience we won’t soon forget! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by our host Jimmy who took exceptional care of us. Ensuring we had everything we needed in terms of food and drinks.
A special mention goes to the head chef, Mitch Kim, who was our instructor for the class. He was very patient with our group and his expertise made the class both educational and incredibly fun. He demonstrated basic and advanced methods for beginners and collectively we made some delicious rolls. His passion for the craft was evident, and his explanation of the process and how to choose ingredients was inspiring and accessible.
If you’re looking for a unique and engaging group activity, I highly recommend Sushi Hall. The experience was memorable and many of us can’t wait to come back!

My lunch experience at Sushi Hall left me underwhelmed - the nigiri selection was limited, and the classic rolls offered were all fairly generic. It also felt a bit unusual sitting at an empty sushi bar while the chefs were working in the kitchen. Nevertheless, I appreciated the restaurant's well-designed interior and the friendly service, although the lack of activity at the sushi station impacted the overall ambience.
On a positive note, the hand rolls were decently flavored, though considering the overall experience, I would not plan to revisit Sushi Hall for lunch.

Some of the best sushi we’ve had in Chicago. Everything was as fresh as it comes, and new creations on menu we tried were delicious alongside the cocktails from the attached speakeasy in the back (southern soul roll is incredible). Our first time we ended up sitting at the bar top, where chef “Mitch” behind the counter went above and beyond to make our date night top notch. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend to anyone considering! Excellent spot, one of the best.

The best sushi spot with the most fresh fish in Chicago! The service while sitting at the bar with chef Mitch was amazing!! There is even the cutest speak easy bar in the back that is extremely charming. Will most certainly be a new go to for my husband and I. Just overall great people with amazing food!

If you’re serious about sushi, this is the spot. Mitch is the kind of chef who knows his regulars, which makes every visit feel special. The fish here is consistently fresh, whether you’re enjoying it as sashimi, nigiri, or in one of his specialty rolls. Sticking to the classics or trying something new, you can’t go wrong here.

Sushi was OK. I ordered a rice bowl and it was not good at all, especially for the price. Just the tuna, white rice, few cucumbers and salmon roe. Not flavorful at all, even with the soy sauce. My cousin ordered salmon pieces and they tasted frozen in the middle of it. Idk how this sushi is #3 in chicago.

Uncomfortably good. Hand rolls were crispy and flavorful. Nigiri is generously thick and incredibly fresh - better than I’ve ever had in Chicago. And yet they’re both put to shame by the maki.
Apparently the chef used to run Toro down the street. I’d be concerned for Toro’s business now, because the quality is clearly riding with the chef.
Got the chance to talk shop with the owner after dining. The secret to the fresh fish that everyone is raving about? Incredibly rigorous supply management. Calculate exactly what you need to order, toss after 2 days. In other words, there’s no secret, only hard work - and we get to reap the benefits as customers.
I will be coming here as long as Sushi Hall remains open.

I have only gone to about 30 sushi spots in Chicago and Sushi Hall only twice (once dine in, once take out), so I'm not ready to say this definitively, but at least so far, this is my favorite sushi spot in Chicago.
They use the good take out chopsticks, have excellent sushi, their service on par with 日本, and they're fast. I've only gone a couple of times so far but I'm going to start frequenting this place because they impressed me both times.
The fish is super fresh. I can't remember if I've tried their uni or tamago so I'll be trying that next time I go :)

This is a casual sushi spot you can go to with your friends and not necessarily need to get dressed up, but can if you want to. The food alone is hands down five stars. We sat in the back area, which they label as the speakeasy and is a bar area with about five two-top tables.
The drinks are concocted STRONG which is my personal love language. I would 100% get the Lycheetini and the Night Cap again.
We started our meal with Mr. Kim's Crispy Rice, which is spicy tuna on a bed of crispy rice that was a little chewy, but the jalapeño on top made it crunchy and a 4/5. The In & Out Signature Roll was a show stopper, almost like a seafood tower on top of a maki roll. It felt like such a treat because of the generous portions of fresh fish embellishing this roll and a complete 5/5. The Moulton had cilantro in it, which made the roll more vibrant and bright with a healthy cut of tuna inside. 5.5. Last, but not least, was The 22. Simply amazing and like Lady Gaga would say never been done before. It featured a torched thin piece of salmon decorating the top of each piece and added a mild smokiness to the flavor.
To top it off the entire night the featured setlist was ChappelRoan, who opened for Olivia Rodrigo this year, so to say this was an ideal night was an understatement.

Newer restaurant with head chef from Toro sushi. Great modern take on sushi with interesting rolls include a “in and out” roll and Wagyu roll. Went for Chicago restaurant week which they had an incredible deal. A small run place with very involved head chef/ owner! A must go for dine in and takeout. Love the decor. Had a speakeasy in the back which we will come back for. Drinks looked delicious.

Sushi hall missed the mark for us. It took forever to get a spot at a fairly empty restaurant. The rolls we ordered had a decent flavor, but they were actually rolled so poorly they kept falling apart when we would pick them up. Service throughout the entire meal was lackluster. There are plenty of other options to look for better sushi in the city.

Sushi hall is a bit of a confusing sushi restaurant. To start they require you purchase a combo & wont allow you to get individual rolls, hand rolls or pieces of nigiri. Additionally they have separate lunch & dinner menus so don’t expect to be able to get the full menu before dinner time. You can’t order the from the full set of Maki Rolls at lunch.
The owner was friendly & hospitable, but the rest of the staff wasn’t as friendly. The Sushi Hall opened late on the day I arrived.
The quality of the food & sushi was generally satisfactory, but not what I had expected from the social media posts. Influencers & social media can be misleading at times.

This was our first time visiting Sushi Hall. We enjoyed the sushi rolls that we had ordered and the miso soup was on point. There was a few little bugs floating around near the entrance area. However, I want to give a special review to our server Joel D. He was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! He took care of me and my husband really well and frequently checked in with us if we needed anything and if the food was great etc. He deserves a RAISE! We haven't received this type of service anywhere else. We need Joel D. to be our waiter every time we visit Sushi Hall.

I’m going to dream about this food going back home to Minnesota. Did our last dinner here for our quick anniversary weekend. Casual fun vibe. I made reservations and had a small table. My husband and I love sitting at bar tops when we can. We ended sitting at the bar and don’t regret it, we met Mitch the owner and chef. He was so incredibly nice and it was fun talking with him throughout our dinner. The food, quality and service was hands down the best service I’ve gotten eating out in a while. Highly recommend this place!

Recently tried Sushi Hall and loved it. Such a cool new spot in Lincoln park with a speakeasy bar. Really like the colors and vibes of this place . The service is also quick and the staff is friendly.
The food was a 10/10. Unforgettable taste, impeccable craftsmanship, and a symphony of freshness await you at Sushi Hall. This is probably my FAVORITE spot I've been to recently. It has an outdoor patio too, making it the perfect spot for SUMMER.
We tried the Hamachi on the Hall, The Friends Night Out, The Moulton, Gyoza, and Togarashi Fries. Each dish was so flavorful and the portion sizes were good too. Hamachi on the hall was my absolute favorite. I will definitely be back to try other things on their menu.

I went into the restaurant with the intention of ordering Chicken Teriyaki, and, after we had received our appetizers, I was informed they were out of it. I was forced to order Chicken Katsu - a wholly different dish - and did not enjoy my meal at all. A menu should be as advertised, and, if there are menu items lacking they should be placed on the door, so diners like myself do not sit down with the intention of ordering one thing only to be told they must order another.

Great service, even better food… Sushi Hall is our go-to for sushi in Chicago. We visited the Ward Room for the first time last night - awesome cocktails/sake, March Madness on the big screen and friendly service - a pretty great Friday night. 10/10 recommend.
Visited 2 years ago
Great ambience… if you’re lucky enough to be seated in the front (what you see from the street). Our reservation got us seated in a separate back room, which had all the charm of the employee break room in a grocery store. I’m not even exaggerating. So much for a cute date spot, welcome to bingo night in your local church basement. There were flies too. At least dim the lights a bit!
The good news is the food came out fast, because we couldn’t wait to get out of there. I’m really not that picky, the room was that unpleasant. Haven’t experienced that before. Felt a bit deceived… very disappointing.
Sushi was ok. Recommend the spicy tuna crunch rolls.

Very accommodating. We had a party of 15 people and they sat us in our own room. Everyone's food came out perfect. They do have fun drinks. I have the chicken teriyaki and the shrimp tempura roll. It was all delicious. They have RC pop. Also with all of us they would only split the check 3 ways and only take 4 credit cards. So it made it hard to split the checks. The staff was quick and friendly. I will be back.

Can't recommend (yet): Had shishito peppers for appetizers, do not recommend it - they were simply not done yet, 1/3 of peppers at bottom of bowl were barely roasted it was like eating warmed up green peppers. The rest 2/3 were roasted but simply not enough, and not much flavor. I've had them many times and made at home, here by far was the worst I've had - especially for something so simple it was a bit of a shame.
Also had the in and out roll, rainbow roll, and spicy tuna roll. All tasted very fresh. Spicy tuna roll was by far the tastiest, even though was the simplest and cheapest of the 3. Unfortunately the in and out and rainbow roll did not live up to expectation, taste (to each their own) and price wise. I would not have them again.
Also, it was odd how we got seated from the start, first thing we were asked if we could sit at the bar counter, and then told that actually a table is available which was great! but the when we entered the place it was almost empty and all tables available for most of the time we were there - super odd, maybe there were reservations - idk, but still, when we left most of tables were empty. All in all the fish was fresh, loved that, but taste/flavor of most items we got did not impress me, and compared to a few sushi places in the area this place did not excel. Since they just opened I may give it another try in a few months, as I know any place needs some time to ramp up and get things right

If you’re looking for an incredible sushi spot in Lincoln Park, go to Sushi Hall. Mitch Kim, formerly the chef at Toro Sushi, opened a new spot that offers incredible quality fish in a neighborhood setting. Sit at the counter and get ready to experience extremely fresh fish that will tantalize your tastebuds. Mitch and his team provide great service and you leave there feeling like part of the family.
Go support this business so we can keep amazing sushi spots like Mitch’s in our neighborhood!

To sum it up: we blew $100 and still went home and had Mac n Cheese.
The rolls were kind of tasteless, but the nigiri was pretty fresh. Stick with those.
Overall, an average sushi spot for Chicago.
Edit: The owners responded, which is great! The biggest problem wasn't the size of the rolls, but the fact that we didn't enjoy them very much. I don't know if it's the same fish that goes into the nigiri or the rolls, but the fish in the nigiri tasted more flavorful.

They actually toast their nori which you can best tell ok their hand rolls. Donburri is a steal. Love the train station style menu board, but the sushi seats feel odd at that height. They could plate a little more ginger. I would love if they carried quail eggs. Nice bathrooms and they have a speakeasy bar in the back called The Ward Room.

I went back and forth on posting this review because I love Mitch, but we had the worst dining experience of our lives at Sushi Hall a few months ago.
We ordered miso soup and edamame. The miso soup never came out, and the edamame was the last dish we were served. How hard is it to fill a bowl with pre made soup that’s sitting in the back of the kitchen? Okay so we got our appetizers last.
A friend ordered a specialty vegetarian roll, and our server said due to limited ingredients he would have to check with the kitchen and get back to us. 30 minutes later I overhear him tell another table they don’t have the ingredients for the same roll our friend just ordered. I call him over and ask when he planned to tell us, and he argued with us that he already had told us when all 4 members of our party knew he didn’t.
To top it all off, the man who must be Mitch’s business partner who schmoozes at all the tables comes over to us and has the gall to talk badly about Toro Sushi, Mitch’s first restaurant. We told him about our experience and he took care of a few items on our bill which I appreciate, but don’t talk down on the sushi restaurant that knows when to bring out an appetizer.
I’m sure you’ll have a better experience here and I hope so for Mitch’s sake.

I had a fabulous time at Sushi Hall celebrating my birthday. 4 of us, me a complete Sushi Rookie, tried maybe a dozen dishes. Every one was delicious. When we told our server, Jules, that I was a rookie he suggested different dishes to try. He was spot on with his suggestions of drink and food. He was very attentive to our tables needs. Service was fast. The food fresh and delicious! Turns out Sushi is ok!
Also I lucked out by getting to actually have Chef Kim great me and wish me happy birthday.
My birthday was all BTS themed and I discovered Chef Kim was Army.
If you go, say hello to my friend Julie, another wonderful server and Army.
After our meal we stepped into the Ward Room, the back room craft bar. There I was served my birthday cake and the bar tender and staff sang happy birthday to me.
I just want to thank all the wonderful staff from the hostess to the cute little busboy for making this a birthday to remember for ever.
Big shout out to the family that made it happen.

Menu on their web site differs from the in-restaurant menu. Cramped seating. Didn't taste that great in general.

Easily some of the best sushi I’ve ever had in the states, definitely the best in the city. Quality of the the food was superb and prices are reasonable. They also have a selection of sake that is actually delicious. Our server Evan was friendly and made super helpful suggestions since this was our first time visiting- service was quick and we truly enjoyed our time at the restaurant. So glad this place opened in our neighborhood and we will definitely be back soon with friends!

Hi there! I have been hearing all the hype about this place, so I went tonight, on a random Wednesday. The sushi was fast, and pretty, and it was really good. It didn’t blow my mind, but I’ll tell you, it was really good. The wine was really good also, but I will never order wine there again. A $14 cab was on the menu, and I ordered it. The pour was so skimpy, that I drank it almost in four or five sips. For $14? I swear it wasn’t even 5 ounces. So, go for the sushi, but skip the alcohol. They are really skimpy! I looked up the wine online, and it’s a $22 bottle of wine. That markup is insane.

Traveling for work but contemplating putting down roots here just for sushi hall. Probably one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. The chef was so generous with his time, the service all around was spectacular and the freshest sashimi I’ve come across. It’s a new spot so get here before the game goes to their head.

Ok. Just GO. It's a cozy, loving neighborhood spot with great food - even for those that don't love sushi. The Ringer Roll is fantastic and should not be missed. The fries are enough for the whole table and just a super-fun starter. I happen to love the chicken katsu. And the wines are perfect and reasonably priced. Chef Mitch is a neighborhood icon that never disappoints. Let's do what we can to keep this place around our neighborhood for the next 20 years!

Best quality sushi in town. My go to sushi place whenever I am visiting Chicago. Chef Mitch is a master at what he does and his expertise is hard to match. I loved the decor and private dining area and the staff were super friendly as well.

This new sushi restaurant in Lincoln Park has its own little charm. It caters it’s community with a lot of potential to grow.
The head chef is open and friendly, greeting everyone with a smile.
It is understandably low staffed and the staff is a little green. What they lack in front of the house people, they make up with the food.
The veggie tempura is perfectly made, perfect temperature, crispy crispy crispy!
The sushi selection is good, the portion wise- a little big. Presentation was okay.
Overall, this place has a lot of room to grow and continue catering to the community, definitely a place to check out.

So glad to see Sushi Chef Mitch open Sushi Hall in our neighborhood! Mitch has been my wife's and my favorite sushi chef for over ten years while he was at Toro.
With Sushi Hall, Chef Mitch and his partners have created a wonderful restaurant to enjoy sushi and Japanese cooking. The airy, open architecture is as inviting as its gracious hosts.
Freshness is a trademark of Chef Mitch's preparations. The raw fish is fresher tasting than any other sushi bar we have tried in Chicago. My wife enjoyed the delicious salmon crunch, Philly, and shrimp tempura rolls. I LOVED the shrimp tempura dinner--be sure to order all shrimp if you prefer it that way. Dinner came with rice, miso soup, and a mesclun greens salad with ginger dressing. We rounded out the dinner with edamame, a local hazy IPA, and a glass of pinot grigio.
Looking forward to trying more of my favorites soon!
If you find this review helpful, please give it a thumbs up - - Thanks! 👍🏿👍🏽👍🏼👍🏻

Very good sushi and staff is super friendly. Former owner of Toro is the owner so great quality and taste is expected and our experience didn’t disappoint. The only potential negative is the rolls have a little less rice than other sushi places but this allows the filling to be the star of the roll instead of the rice. I highly recommend you try this place.

So happy Sushi Hall is finally open! We had a fantastic meal prepared by the famous Chef, Mitch Kim. I can confidently write that this is the best sushi restaurant in the Chicagoland area. Highly recommend reserving seats at the chefs table for a 5-star experience.

We ordered Shishito Peppers, Spicy Taco rolls, Spider/Spicy Tuna Crunch/In & Out/Unagi hand rolls. The Shishito Peppers were good but a little bland for our tastebuds. Same with the Spider hand roll. We loved the spicy taco rolls & will definitely order again.

This is the best sushi restaurant in Chicago for vegetarians! The menu is best for fish eaters and vegetarians alike. The staff is absolutely amazing and very accommodating. You feel like family here!
We were a party of 17 and were completely accommodated and prioritized for our ordering. They made us feel so welcome!

We've known chef Mitch for a long time and are regulars at his previous restaurant. We're so happy that he opened Sushi Hall along with new partners Jacob, Jimmy and Dao. The restaurant offers the freshest sushi with the highest quality ingredients. Our favorites are spicy tako and the moulton. If you're looking for the best sushi in Chicago, this is a must-visit!

The best new addition to the neighborhood. Mitch (the head sushi chef) is the best, and does such a great job making you feel welcome. Great for a date night or with some friends. You will not be disappointed. HIGHLY recommend the In & Out Roll!

I ate at Sushi Hall on Saturday evening with a friend and it was wonderful. I have eaten at some of the top sushi restaurants in Tokyo, NYC, LA and Chicago. Sushi Hall has made its way to the top of my favorite sushi places. The rolls and sashimi were so fresh. I highly recommend visiting this spot in Lincoln Park.

Love this spot! We ordered several rolls along with the Japanese-seasoned fries (yes, fries!) and everything was delicious! They also have a nice, well-curated beverage menu, which I definitely appreciate. Our server Rachel was great, the space is really nice (bright, clean, colorful), and the location is perfect, right on lively Clark Street. They also had a lot of options for non-raw options, so this is a great neighborhood place to bring my parents (who are decidedly not sushi people). Highly recommend!

Had the privilege to attend the friends and family soft launch at Sushi Hall last week. The interesting restaurant design and atmosphere, delicious but not overwhelming menu and the very personable and attentive service provided for an outstanding dining experience. Jacob, Jimmy, Dao and chef extraordinaire Mitch have definitely hit this one out of the park!

So excited Sushi Hall finally opened and no surprise it exceeded expectations. Mitch and team continue to shine. The food was excellent and atmosphere felt like you are always among friends. Can't wait to return.

The food here was so. good. Everything my friend and I ordered was really special. It is a pretty big menu with lots of non-sushi options for those that aren't into rolls. One of their signature rolls, "the ringer," was insanely good. We are already planning our return trip.

Been walking past Sushi Hall for weeks waiting for them to open and they didn’t disappoint. Staff was super friendly and the quality was otherworldly. Dangerous that this is so close to me as I am sure I will try the whole menu by the end of the year. If you have the sushi craving, come here and guarantee it will be on your favorite list too!

Sushi Hall and Mitch are the best on the Planet! Pretty amazing to have the opportunity to continue the tradition! Family friendly, warm, immaculate Sushi spot that takes it to a new level! In and Out, Ringer, Spicy Tuna Crunch, and Spider Rolls were outstanding!! Google won’t allow videos so enjoy the moment when Mitch saw a friend who has grown up on his Sushi!
