Sunda is an award-winning restaurant showcasing modern interpretations of culturally important classics from all over Southeast Asia and its surrounding islands by drawing inspiration from countries such as Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and more.
Very good food and service. Would have changed the music that was playing, loud mainstream pop hits. Lighting was uncomfortably bright when we first sat down and ordered but got dimmer as the dinner went on. $9 for a glass of sparkling water is a bit much in my opinion.

I had the adobo fried rice (vegetarian) and the sweet potato caterpillar roll (also vegetarian). The rice was good, but could do with a little less oil. The roll was good but I have had better tasting vegetarian rolls. I think it could use a bit more flavor.
Service was great.
Overall I would recommend it, but if everyone in the group is vegetarian/vegan then I’d choose somewhere else for the price.

My wife and I went to Sunda this week and it was delicious. We had a couple appetizers, the New York Steak, and the fried carrot cake ice cream. Our waitress, who has worked there for 12 years, was excellent. She made sure we loved all of our choices. As good if not better than our previous meals at Nobu. Thank you, we look forward to coming back.

In town with my work family. What a great meal to share with them! Service was excellent. My friend had a food allergy, the server can back and outlined which meals or drinks would be impacted. We all thought that was great service. The dishes are great and with six of us, we shared all the dishes. Is highly recommend this place!

Overall, we enjoyed their happy hour! Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 PM you can get $6 bar bites, $6 sushi handrolls, $6 wine, $6 cocktail, $7 sake glass.
We got the $8 cocktail (they only offer one at this price), which was the Time of Our Life. I enjoyed the citrusy, slightly sweet flavor but it was pretty light on the alcohol. Could have used a more generous liquor pour.
Of the bar bites, we ordered the shishito peppers (which were good but nothing extraordinary) and the adobo pork belly bites, which were delicious! Crispy, rich, flavorful - Definitely get these if you come!

Everything we had here was delicious, if a little bit small for the price.

The place is huge, which I did not expect. Lot of people so lots of chatter, it’s very loud.
The service was great. The food was good, but not superb. I would return if I were in the area and there was no wait.
I was pleased that they had several vegetarian options which were labeled on the menu.
We had:
- spicy edamame
- steamed buns Korean fried chicken
- adobo fried rice vegetables
- sweet potato caterpillar (10/10)

Omg… this was SO good! I believe our servers name was Larry, he provided the best service we’ve ever had I think. The wagyu rice and hainanese salmon were really good. I especially loved the coconut cheesecake! Would definitely eat here again.

Very disappointed. Over-priced by probably double on everything. We had 1 appetizer, 2 glasses of beers, and 2 entrees. The bill ends up to be close to $160. I mean, if the portions are big, that would have been ok. Unfortunately the portions are for college girls who are on a diet. The “tiger shrimp tempura” ended up to be a salad with finger-tip size shrimps. The $32 crab meat noodles has 1 oz of crab meat tops-they don’t even care to give you enough noodles to fill you up. With Asian fusion food as bad as P.F. Chang’s, at least P. F. Chang’s had a bigger portion. Complete rip off. Stay away from these celebrity-owned places. Shame on you Billy Dec.

The (orange hair) hostess repeatedly lied about the wait time for a pickup order. It’s very irritating bc there’s no parking. It was so uncomfortable she just stared at me and playing on her phone, saying it would be another five minutes and got into an argument with me afterwards. Absolutely awful service.

If you want good tasty Asian food this is not the place (every low review seems to be for food). But I have to assume if you’re going here you care more for the environment and experience. We went on a Tuesday evening so it wasn’t crazy. Vibes were solid. Service was good but nothing impressive. The ambiance is nice, it definitely feels like a nice restaurant. But again, the flavor of the food was a miss for me. A few of the small plates genuinely seem unseasoned. Biggest letdown of all was the Szechuan chicken. There is not Szechuan in it. It is just regular sweet and spicy chicken. Breaded pieces of chicken dipped in thick sauce and served with red chili peppers. Not spicy. $34 for a very uninspired dish. Best thing I would recommend is trying the various beef tapas because the meat was very soft and well cooked. Could easily be a 4 star place with better flavor.

I went in a Friday night and it was definitely a packed house. I did like that they played music but it was loud considering how many people were there and them talking over the music. Anyway, I ordered the Adobo rice and lumpia. Everything was bland. The onions in the rice weren’t even fully cooked, they were crunchy. The food is WAY too overpriced for what you get.

We went to celebrate my friend’s birthday. Once I opened the first set of doors, I could immediately tell how loud it was in the restaurant. There was music playing, and it was a packed house.
My sister and I shared the oxtail pot stickers, pork belly buns (pictured), and the pancit. The pot stickers left a bit to be desired. The pancit was good but a bit salty to me. The buns were the best but also on the salty side.
My friend is vegan, and she ate well. She shared a roll, rice, and a bowl with her boyfriend. The waiter brought out a sorbet with a candle. That sorbet was excellent!! So smooth and creamy, even though there’s no cream/milk in it of course. Good dinner overall.

honestly the food was really good if a bit overpriced but the service was so bad it left a bad taste in our mouths. the waiter (large guy with a mask) was in a foul mood from the start and made us feel like we were bothering him by ordering our food, asking for the wifi password, or really just being in his space. when the manager realized there was some unhappiness at the table he talked with us but didn't address the situation at all. Our group was 13 people (business group), spent over $1000, gladly gave automatic 20% tip, and were trying to relax and have a nice meal but somebody woke up grumpy...

Our first time at Sunda after 11 years in the neighborhood. Shame on us! It was a truly delightful evening from the moment we walked through the door until we reluctantly departed two hours later, The young man minding the front desk left his station to open the door for us and as he led us to our table, asked if this was our first visit and when we responded affirmatively, welcomed us warmly and took the time to explain the restaurant’s conept and learn more about us.
Our server, Lee, was fabulous: attentive but never instrusive; knowledgeable but never condescending; and radiated enthusiasm about a restaurant he obviously loved.
We were there for happy hour and sampled at least seven items on the menu and all were complex and flavorful - the product of a kitchen dedicated to consistently serving great food.
Thank you Sunda and Lee for giving us the best dining experience we have had in very long time.

We went there to celebrate my daughter's birthday. My daughter is vegetarian and I am vegan. We ordered the crispy eggplant bao buns and tofu pad thai. Both were terrible - almost inedible! We left the restaurant hungry. I would give zero stars for the food if I could.
Meat dishes ordered by the rest of the party were okay. We told our server that my husband is allergic to shellfish. Once the food arrived we were told that all the meat dishes were cross contaminated with seafood and that he would have to order from one of the few vegetarian options. I'm not sure why we were not told that when ordering the food! Very disappointed and will not go there again. If you're vegan or vegetarian please go elsewhere.

We went on a Tuesday evening for a large 12 person dinner and had an excellent time! We did make a reservation for 12 but had to squeeze all of us into a 10 person table which surprised us. Luckily they brought over two more seats so we could try to fit, but I do wish we had more space. We ordered sushi, their famous Brussels sprouts, a variety of soju and cocktails, pad Thai, and the excellent pork belly! The pork belly and lychee wasabi cocktail were the standout items of the night. Overall, great experience and will be coming back.

As someone who plans events for a living, I had to take the time to write out how amazing it was to host an event at Sunda. I had the privilege of working with Nicole and team to host three separate events in their private dining room and from beginning to end, it was nothing short of phenomenal! Nicole manages her events with attention to detail and special care, she was such a pleasure to work with and was incredibly helpful and organized as we worked on all three events at the same time. She went above and beyond to ensure our event went off without a hitch and that we were taken care of.
We are so grateful to the entire team as well! They made us feel incredibly welcomed, continued to follow up and ensured we had everything we needed for a seamless event, and also went above and beyond for our group. They were extremely accommodating and flexible to our last minute changes and made our experience overall exceptional. I had several of our guests come up to me after and say what a pleasant experience they had at Sunda simply because of how they were treated by staff. Not to mention, every one was so impressed by the delicious food and drinks.
We are looking forward to working with Nicole and team again soon!

This place was so fantastic! A special thank you to our server Bri. It was my birthday dinner with my family on a busy night. She took the time to help me decide on which items to get and was so knowledgeable about the menu. She was also just extremely personable. Kind, engaging, and quick.
As someone who works in the industry myself, it is always a great pleasure to see a server put forth this much effort and care.
Lastly, my only qualm was that it was incredibly loud in the restaurant. The music was loud, and also the dining room was full which is a good thing! But my dinner may have been quite a bit better if the whole party at my table could hear each other.
Otherwise, give this place a try. I was so overwhelmed with how many good choices there were, I will be back to try more.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sunda, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, with an ambiance that perfectly balances laid-back vibes with a touch of sophistication. It’s the kind of place where you can unwind and enjoy a great evening out.
The drinks were phenomenal—crafted with care and bursting with flavor. However, I did encounter a small issue with the Crunchy Surf & Turf sushi roll. Thankfully, the manager was incredibly kind and quick to address the situation, which I truly appreciated. Their attentiveness and professionalism really stood out and added to the overall positive experience.
Overall, Sunda is a fantastic spot for anyone looking to enjoy delicious drinks and a stylish, relaxed atmosphere. I look forward to visiting again!

I don’t understand the hype for this restaurant as the food here is just ok. I came here for a family dinner and ordered around 9 dishes (some not pictured) along with drinks. The supposedly hot dishes would come out at around room temp or cold. I’m not sure if the kitchen was slow or the service was slow because the dishes come out one at a time and there would be a bit of a wait in between. The food itself was just ok, nothing too spectacular. I feel like it is a slightly less flavorful version of whatever dish they’re trying to make.

Significantly overpriced for what it is.
Went there for a "fancy dinner" with my wife and adult child.
The Bulgogi Roti Tacos - I thought it was lacking an element, but my kid adored them.
Crispy rice with Wagyu - was expecting something like a paella, got 4 small pre-prepared "sushi" style pieces. Tasty but not amazing. The rice was not crispy.
The Pancit, which was very good, but not so much better than any other takeout place.
The szechuan chicken was crispy if a bit overcooked. Heavy 5-spice, which my wife doesn't enjoy, but we thought it was good.
Lastly, we got a panda roll, which I normally avoid cream cheese in my sushi since it can easily overpower. This was not bad and the cheese wasn't overpowering. However, it was a firm "meh".
My wife's cocktail was $20 and did not live up to the description.
Overall....$210? for what should have been $75 from another restaurant?
I guess that is the price for River North.

We told him give us plastic water cup for the kids coz we afraid they will break the real glass, he glanced at us unhappy and then never any water for the kids. We asked the waitress one more time and then he came back with the plastic cup stamping strongly on the table. He ruined all my good mood coming in the restaurant for the first time. Elegant sophistication and incredible flavors combined to make a great evening for a special occasion
Visited 7 months ago
Overall, everything was great.
Here’s a breakdown:
PROS
• We arrived a few minutes early, and they seated us immediately, even when 1/2 of our party hasn’t arrived yet.
• Our server was friendly, and was very attentive to our needs and orders.
• All of the food we ordered were amazing. Flavorful.
WHAT NEEDS WORK:
• Our server could check in with us more frequently, especially with drink refills and update on orders. We order “Kamayan” which we were told would take 30 minutes, and also Pad Thai. We got “Kamayan” in under 30 minutes, which was good, but the Pad Thai was the one that took 30 or more minutes. The one in our party had to wait for his Pad Thai, while we ate almost half of “Kamayan.”
• HOW KAMAYAN IS SERVED: As Filipinos, “Kamayan” usually means we eat it with our hands. We can use utensils if we want, of course. The chef needs to rethink how the meat is served, particularly the Pork Belly the Chicken Inasal. They should be able to be picked up by hands, without the use of knives to cut them. Both meats were not small enough to be picked apart. And when the supposedly steak knives were brought to us, they weren’t serrated enough to cut both meats. They need to replace their current “steak” knives with REAL “steak knives.” What they have can only cut through fish. (I would suggest that they slice both the Pork Belly and the Chicken Inasal, but put them back together as a block, so the presentation is still there.)
COURTESY
• Due to the lateness of the Pad Thai, the restaurant has decided to comp the dish, and also comp our cocktail and sodas.
• They also have us complementary dessert, and the sushi chef also gave us complementary cucumber wrapped shrimp.
All in all, it was a good experience.

Loved the place! Amazing food. Seriously, go here. You won’t regret it. We got bulgogi tacos, crazy fried rice, adobe fried rice and vegetable curry. Everything was awesome.
The drinks however were quite pedestrian. Their bar program needs to be improved. But hey! I go to eat not drink. Drinks are just a nice accompaniment. So for what I needed….its fantastic!

Great drinks and food! We got the Strawberry Fields and Cambodian Cabana for drinks. We split the Lobster Wagyu sushi, Wagyu Signature Crispy Rice, and Adobo Pork Belly for dinner. While everything was good, the Wagyu Signature Crispy Rice was my favorite!

Our server, Ryan, was incredibly nice and helpful, the food was delicious, and the menu easily accommodated our vegan friends. I would gladly come again!

This place was PHENOMENAL! The crispy rice rolls were to die for - especially the wagyu ones. All of their sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. They were unique and didn’t feel too heavy. For those were weren’t raw fish fans, the bao buns and butter garlic noodles were also big winners at the table. They have a nice selection of wine and sake, and also made some great cocktails.
They also have a gambler roll with 7 pieces. One has ghost pepper in it - and it’s a gamble who gets the roll! We were all too afraid to get it, but it would be fun to get between some risky friends.
Perfect place for business dinners and nice date nights. 🍣🍣🍣

Sunda is a great space to host private events. My company just had our second dinner in their PDR upstairs. The space is perfect for small or large groups, the food is phenomenal, and the meeting planners and servers are very attentive, organized, and truly care about your experience. Thank you for having us!

Over the past 3 months I have hosted both company events and private dining with family at Sunda and continue to be impressed by the menu, staff, and atmosphere. If you are planning a corporate gathering, you will not find a more accommodating Sales and Catering Director than Nicole Salerno. I cannot wait for another excuse to host an event there!

No go for Celiacs. Whatever says GF on the menu is not GF.

Way too overpriced for what you get. Food was just okay. Service was pretty terrible. Crispy Brussels weren’t crispy and were actually kinda mushy. The crispy rice with wagyu tasted okay but seemed like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for awhile (not fresh). Yellow tail was good, miso cod was delicious but took forever to come out. Sweet potato roll was just okay.
I’ve been here a few times, but not for several years and I would say that this place has not kept up with the Chicago restaurant standards. Definitely not worth what they’re charging, and we won’t be back.

Ordered drop off catering for an office party…lunch was absolutely fabulous. Delivery on time, food was piping hot, presentation was next level. Rave reviews from 70+attendees. The whole office was buzzing. We also have multiple food allergies, vegetarians and gluten free eaters which were all accommodated.

I am not sure what the hype is about. This place is medicore at best. Food is average. Not great. It is too loud and the food is so below standard. This place is a joke. I don’t recommend any dishes really.

Food was absolutely amazing, everything we ordered was delicious. Service was great, too. The only downside is the restaurant is quite loud inside so we had to yell at each other while talking.

Had a GREAT experience with my group at Sunda last week! Not only was their events coordinator, Emily, super helpful in last minute changing our catering order to an in-house dining experience, but we were taken care of immediately when we arrived by our hosts Sam and Wilson. The food is UNREAL and the atmosphere is so lively. 10/10 reccommend.

Chef Carlos Dalisay's meal was absolutely delicious, showcasing his culinary expertise with each bite. The service was nothing short of spectacular, with Manager Aakifa Patel providing exceptional attention to detail that truly enhanced the warm and inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. Every element of our dining experience was thoughtfully executed, making it a memorable occasion.
This restaurant is highly recommended for anyone seeking a great dining experience. We owe a special thanks to Martin for recommending such a wonderful place; it truly exceeded our expectations.
Moreover, thank you for making my wife’s birthday so special and filled with unforgettable memories. The extra touches and care taken to celebrate her day made all the difference. We will definitely be back soon to enjoy more of what this fantastic restaurant has to offer.

As always, our team had an exceptional evening at SUNDA and appreciate the staff accommodating the crazy schedule of healthcare professionals. The staff is always so attentive, engaging, and sincere. We truly enjoy dinning at SUNDA …and let’s not forget the food!!! It was delicious and perfectly timed courses.

"The friendly and generous reception of guests, visitors, or strangers" is the meaning of hospitality and Sunda gets it right!
I entered this Southeast Asian restaurant and chose a seat at the expansive bar. Ethan and Caden were prompt, courteous and friendly...certainly appreciated as I was dining alone.
My appetite was much lighter than usual having spent a full day at the Chicago NRA food show. I spotted the Seaweed Salad ($17) and received a thumbs up on the selection from the dynamic duo. However, I did ask them to recommend another item. They both knew the menu backwards and forwards and without hesitation pointed me in the direction of Tiger Shrimp Tempura w/candid walnuts, creamy honey aioli, frisee ($18)...an excellent choice. My evening was just about done when I spotted the restaurant manager, Edwin. I shared my experience with him and D'sean (bar manager). They too went over the top to thank me for choosing Sunda. I will not soon forget my meal, but I will never forget how this team made me feel!

I visited this spot randomly after a coworker recommended it while I was out in Chicago. I came in and sat at the bar and ordered only a few items. Unfortunately I was pretty upset to see that the surf and turf sushi roll didn't have a sear to the steak and had a mushy texture. The mocktail I ordered was not only overpriced but it was also unsatisfying. The service was slower than what I'm used to but they were friendly.

We celebrated my son's bday here. Food was just amazing. We ordered edmame beans, papaya salad, Pad Thai with Tofu and ofcourse their veg sushi as well as shrimp sushi. Everything we rated 5/5. Their schezwan chicken was OK. Our server, Leila, was amazing. We definitely recommend this place. I am a vegetarian and I enjoyed dinner very much.

I went first the first time as a meetup event. Great atmosphere.
The crazy ghost pepper rice was absolutely not even remotely spicy. I don't know why there's a warning on it. There should be a warning on the schezwan chicken HAHAHA. It was 10x spicer than the rice.
Great Pork Adobo, however it's not what you'd expect. It's actually whole pieces of pork belly and you'll have to cut it yourself. 60%-70% fat ratio to actual meat. It is pork belly after all.
The Brussel sprout salad is just that. The sprouts are literally shredded very fine; we all thought it would be while Brussel sprouts.
The pork rolls where to live for, except they're 4 rolls cut in half, so now you have 8 tiny pieces. For the price and flavor, you'll have to see if it's worth it.
Wonder service.
Gratuity is not included even for a party of 11. Which to me, that's a good idea. Then you have a table like ours (major tippers), you're more likely to get more $ than a certain percentage if taking it out automatically!

For a Southeast Asian culinary experience, you have to try Sunda Chicago! Had dinner with friends and had a fun time. Place has a great vibe, good service, and food is yummy.
We ordered Papaya Salad, Street Corn, crispy Eggplant Bao bun, Tuna Poke bowl, Hamachi Tartare and Crazy rice. All of dishes were delicious and very flavorful ; I am a vegetarian but my friends loved all the non-veg dishes. Check it out.
