This is honestly our favorite spot to bring friends and family from out of town. Skye and her team are unmatched in their warmth and attentiveness and Chefs Wen and Ump are amazing. Funny, friendly, dancing to the best of 90s hip hop and creating the most delicious omakase in the city! We are going back tonight with our of town family. Simply the best!!!

The omakase experience and quality of food is fantastic!! My girlfriend planned a surprise date for me for our one year anniversary, as it was also our first date spot last year. When we arrived I was super excited, however she booked the reservation requesting us to be in the left corner (exact same spots as our first date) and it was given to another couple. As they were right in front of us on arrival, she told them that was how the chefs table was managed. As we were right after them, the hostess noted the request and apologized to us. Which is no big deal, however as the evening went on the other couple seated was receiving anniversary shots and other congratulatory words, and from across the room I clearly heard "oh its not our anniversary" to which the hostess replied "well cheers anyway!". That left a pretty bad impression on me, and I think the omakase chef noticed and he gave us a cute little freebie gift. Afterwards, instead of apologizing for the error the hostess handed us coupons to two free sake bombs on our next visit. I appreciate the gesture, but I cannot overlook the fact we listed anniversary in our reservation and had to watch the other couple receive the freebies and congratulations meant for us. We decided it was best to just pay and leave asap. A huge thank you to the omakase chef for the gift!!

I came here for a date night, and while the experience wasn’t entirely bad, I have a few points to share. If you’re someone who frequently enjoys omakase, this may not be the best spot for you. Having grown up in Japan, I’ve had omakase in various settings, and unfortunately, the quality here reminded me more of what you might find at a Japanese chain restaurant for $30

First, the portions were quite small—almost half the size of what you’d typically get at other places. Even after upgrading to 17 pieces, I still felt unsatisfied. To put it in perspective, I’m 5’2” and weigh 110 lbs, so I’m not a big eater, but I was left wanting more.

Second, the rice didn’t meet expectations. Some pieces were undercooked, and others had an overpowering vinegar taste. The final piece, in particular, topping was so cold it felt like it had just been taken out of the freezer. Typically, in a good omakase, the fish and rice blend seamlessly to provide a smooth experience, but that wasn’t the case here.

Lastly, the atmosphere didn’t create the right environment to fully enjoy the omakase. The room was dark and small, with loud music making it difficult to relax. The chef’s voice was barely audible, so I couldn’t even hear what ingredients were being used, which is usually one of the highlights of the experience.

At $120 per person (including tip), if you’re new to omakase, this might be a decent starting point, as you’ll get what you paid for. However, for those who’ve had more refined experiences, this may not meet expectations.

What an unforgettable dining experience we had at sushi by bou. This is a *private omakase dinner* experience and it is unmatched. You will be with about 6-8 others to enjoy. Skyye and her team were fantastic! The chef personally prepares each course right in front of you, curating a unique menu based on seasonal ingredients and your preferences. Highlights include melt-in-your-mouth toro and delicacies like uni, paired perfectly with sake. I highly recommend getting the sake flight! It includes all of the different types of sake and truly is a great deal. Also, if you love caviar I would definitely recommend it for the price of $100 that includes assortment of items that pairs well with it. The intimate setting, exquisite presentation, and attentive service make this dinner more than a meal. I will be back and will be bringing friends.

got the friends and family deal $70 for two 12-course omakase. it was a fun experience and ambiance. we brought our 1 year old daughter and she had a blast. the staff was very accommodating and brought us a high chair from the hotel. they also let us wait in the space even though i think the groups typically wait in the hotel area. my favorite was the miso cod and my husband liked the fatty tuna. we got another fatty tuna a la carte but it was $12. we also got the highball and old fashioned and both were good and not too sweet. I would go for the experience but don't expect to get full.

Visited here once before and the experience was delightful. This time was even better! We had a brand new chef (Zach) it was his first night and he was kind, fun and a good guy. The host (I think) Jackie was also quite pleasant and a delightful young woman who directed the diners and provided wonderful hospitality. The price (65$ for 12 pieces or 100$ for 17, which is what we ordered) is a terrific bargain and with service to match this is a must try for any sushi lover on a budget and an excellent starting point for any rookie new to sushi! Me and my brother will absolutely be back!

The vibe of the room was amazing. We did the 12 course Omakase and it did not disappoint. My favorites were the Toro, Bincho and Wagyuni. Sushi Experience №53

I visited this omakase restaurant for my boyfriend’s birthday, and unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired. Upon arriving, we sat at the bar and were immediately asked what our go-to drinks were before we even had a chance to look at the menu (we had wanted sake). I mentioned a vodka soda, and my boyfriend said old fashioned. Without confirming if we wanted drinks, the bartender started making them for us. When the drinks appeared to be done, we took them—only for the bartender to get upset because my boyfriend’s drink apparently wasn’t finished, lacking an orange peel. His attitude was unnecessary and off-putting.

The omakase itself was great, but what was advertised as an hour-long experience was rushed and only lasted 35 minutes. To top it off, we were asked to leave our seats and finish our drinks on the couches, which made us feel like we were being ushered out prematurely.

As it was my boyfriend’s birthday, I had mentioned it in the reservation notes, hoping the restaurant would do something to make it special. Instead, when the waitress acknowledged my note, we were given four mochi ice creams with a candle. Nice gesture, right? Wrong. When I got the bill, not only were we charged $20 for each drink we didn’t actually order, but we were also charged for the mochi ice cream! Most places offer a complimentary birthday treat or at least a drink, but here we were forced to pay for it all.

For an experience that only lasted 50 minutes and cost $300, we both left feeling disappointed and taken advantage of. It was supposed to be a special night, but the rushed service, unnecessary charges, and unprofessional behavior from the bartender completely ruined it for us.

I loved everything about Sushi by Bou. The vibe is different than a traditional omakase one might think of and there needs to be MORE like it! I love the underground vibe. Skye was amazing and treated us with 200% generosity from the beginning. For the price, I would say it’s worth it. It’s my second time coming and enjoyed both times. You are getting an authentic omakase experience coming here. just because the walls aren’t white, doesn’t mean it isn’t legitimate.

I was super excited for this but at the end I would not go back. The portion sizes were about the size of half my thumb. They never wiped the plate they serve you on. All of the rice is cooked beforehand. The chefs wear gloves while preparing food. They say they strive for “traditional omakase” but it is farrrr from the traditional omakase I have had in Japan.
I didn’t think it was worth and would not recommend. We booked for an hour but the whole thing was done in 20 minutes because they urge you to buy more after.

Came here for dinner on a BOGO deal for a 13 course omakase. The sushi was good, with some unique takes on certain dishes. I can't think of a 12 course omakase with comparable quality for the price, even without the BOGO. The sushi was smaller than what I'm used to, and the Wasabi was a bit overpowering. Overall, delicious food with a fun and funky vibe! Would return.

We added on the Big Mac because it was just so silly. No regrets. Delicious.

Also, it might just be because I am old...but the music volume was a smidge too loud.

Visited 5 months ago

Sushi Experience №71

Full disclosure: we received a BOGO deal and perhaps it was because of that fact that our omakase was INCREDIBLY SMALL. Delicious, but more like a snack. I get the sense that this omakase is a way to get you in the door and feed you small portions so you’re starving by the end and end up buying more. Despite the “deal”, we ended up spending $150 additional because my husband was still hungry. To be honest, for $70, there are several incredible sushi restaurants that offer bomb nigiri platters with (at least) a dozen nigiri that are much larger and equivalent in quality (if not better). Cool idea but not worth it IMO

This is my second time trying the omakase there and it still hits! Sushi by bou is a signature timed omakase experience. The ambiance is inspired by the Hip Hop Era of the 90s, with graffiti-covered walls, playlists dedicated to the best of the ’90s Hip Hop, and murals of Chicago Hip Hop legends.

There are 10 seats to the counter and they have a lounge to hang out and enjoy craft cocktails and the great music!

I really liked the options they served during the omakase and I got the Big Mac after. Soo good! I’d come back! It was a very cool experience!

We tried multiple omakase places in Chicago, but this one is disappointing. The location is hard to find, have to enter from a secret door. dining space is tiny and noisy. It is pretty dark and can’t see if fishes are fresh.
We were craving tasting dishes however the sushi is super tiny and fish are pretty thin. The whole course finished in 25 mins, and we would like to upgrade, but upgrade only accept before start the whole experience, unfortunately nobody told us ahead, so we have to order a la carte item, which similar ingredients we already have.

We spent almost $150/pp without feeling full when we left.

May not come back.

Bad omakase, very basic. I don’t like large nigiri but theirs was too small. Also boo on bou for having their starting sake priced at $89. The “chef” in front of us very obviously didn’t know sushi when I asked him if they have ankimo.

Sushi Experience №106

The food was really tasty, but the portions were really small. I understand that it’s quality fish and ingredients but the size of course didn’t meet my expectation from the previous times. I’ve been to multiple omakases and tried sushi by bou in multiple location, so far this was my least favorite but the service was still really good.

For my birthday my wife booked the 17 course omakase here. We've enjoyed Sushi everywhere we go and had never had a private more personal experience like this. The staff was terrific and dedicated to getting us comfortable and ready to indulge in their excellent food and drinks.

My wife is handicapped and in a wheelchair. The space isn't very compatible but the staff went above and beyond to make it work.

I had an old fashioned and their signature highball as a drink. Both were excellent and handcrafted by the very attentive bartender.

The actual sushi was possibly best I've ever had. Every bite fresh and often paired with only 1 or 2 twists. My favs were the Hotate(scallop), Hamachi and the Wagyu UNI.

An excellent experience all around.

The food was OK - fresh fish but the dressing was off - either too much and overwhelming the taste of the fish or not complementing/ balancing. Finishing with eel left the oily aftertaste to linger. Service was as you’d expect at Omakase. Atmosphere was what killed it for me - loud blaring hip hop music with a sitter / hostess screaming over it, small dark room with black interior. Not relaxing, not enjoyable. I would not recommend to people who prefer more authentic places. After the dinner here, we went next block to another place to eat and relax.

Regardless, the experience is pretty dope you get walked through all of your Omakase courses but I loved how you got a welcome shot of sake! Each course taste unique and any questions we had, our chef didn’t mind answering.

The place is super tiny, very cool in decoration but small, so yes, it can be rushed. I think they should space the reservations out a little better- I think my group had to wait about 20/30 mins after our reservation time to be seated. There was little time to linger at the end, hence being rushed, before they were saying you had to go. The hostesses/waitresses were super nice though! Give it a try just to experience it! Enjoy!

Sushi by Bou is a unique dining experience in Chicago, offering a speakeasy-style omakase experience. Located inside the Hotel Lincoln, it features a cozy, intimate setting with just a few seats, providing an exclusive atmosphere. We had a blast celebrating at the speakeasy omakase inside the Emily Hotel. From a price point, this is much more affordable than others around the city, and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality for the cost.

The room had a cool underground hip hop vibe. The chef did a good job explaining each piece, but it was less conversation about the whole design of the menu than we typically get at an omakase experience. We opted for the Bougie 17-piece package which was the right move.

Highlights for me were the scallop, surf and turf, spotted prawn, mackerel, and the Big Mac, which is an upgrade piece when your meal is finished.

(Pro tip: you wait in the lobby for them to get you at your reservation time, so get drinks at the bar while you wait)

I dined solo last night and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment I stepped through the door, the warm welcome set the tone for a great evening.

Upon arrival, the host had patrons sit in a cozy waiting are before the omakase experience began. Upon entering the waiting area, everyone was greeted by the bartender, Skye. When I asked about mocktails, she not only informed me that they could make any cocktail into a non-alcoholic version, but also recommended the Shiso Southsider. I'm so glad I took her up on her suggestion; the drink was incredibly refreshing and delicious! I also just want to add that her understanding and non-judgmental approach when I opted for a non-alcoholic drink on my birthday made a significant impact on me. It may sound silly, but her thoughtfulness meant the world!

Now, onto the main event-the omakase. Every single piece served was better than the previous. Chef Wu not only showcased his craft, but also accommodated to those with food allergies and restrictions-I felt like he went above and beyond to ensure everyone at the table could enjoy the experience. My favorite pieces were the Bincho, Hotate and the Toro.

I am truly perplexed by any negative reviews because my entire dining experience was a solid 10/10. The attentive staff, including Skye , Chef Wu, and the host (sorry I didn't get her name!) made sure that everyone patron had a seamless and enjoyable evening. Oh, I almost forgot-I absolutely loved their playlist!! I'm already planning on returning with my friends. If you're seeking an unforgettable experience with a great vibe, make sure you check this spot out!

Cute, affordable omakase in the Emily Hotel in Fulton Market. Follow the signs, it’s a little hidden away and that’s part of its charm. The chefs are nice, it’s an intimate space and you can chat with them as they present each course.

My friend and I dined here for the 12 course Omakase experience while listening to old school hip hop. Sushi and hip hop together is an amazing combination. It has an intimate feel and vibe. I previously worked in the restaurant industry and I have to give props to the amazing staff!!!

Skye (that’s SkyE) was our amazing hostess of the evening. She has the BEST energy and made everyone feel welcome and made sure our needs were met at all times. Jose was hands down the BEST bartender I’ve ever had and made amazing cocktails. He was friendly, talented and had great energy. Skye, Jose and the sushi chefs are next level amazing!

Fun, little omakase down a service corridor in Emily Hotel. We’ve dined at Sushi Suite, one of their other restaurants, for a special occasion and definitely found that experience to be more enjoyable. At Sushi by Bou, we were served all 12 pieces in under 40 minutes and left a bit underwhelmed, especially for the price with drinks and add ons. The size of the bites was pretty small and some were not very tasty. I would probably suggest my friends go elsewhere for omakase. Service was super friendly and good though!

The pictures of the food looked great so was excited to try. We had a 9pm reservation but due to some delays ended up not being seated until closer to 9:30pm. We did the "bougie" menu and thought it was okay. The pieces of fish are about the size of your thumb and overall the rice was overcooked and slightly cake-y. There were some good pieces (yellowtail and Salmon roe) but the vast majority of the pieces were underwhelming. If you're looking for a good "vibe" and a night out, then this is your spot. If you're looking for a solid omakase, I would look elsewhere.

Unfortunately my partner got nauseous after we ate here and threw up. I can only hope it was a one off event. We got the 17 piece course. The chef was great and made sure we had a good experience, coming from NY I loved the old school hip hop but I can see it could off put some people while eating omakase. I also think there was a slight leak coming from the ac because we felt water splashing on us while we were eating. It was a little rushed, but with only a hour seating time I understood. I really wanted to like it but I’m hesitant to recommend going simply because of our unfortunate experience. Also, I just remembered I put in a code from their website for a free sake shot and we never received that…

This is a very good intro to Omakase. The traditional intimacy with the chef is mixed with a modernized take of the atmosphere (which they advertise - blasting hip hop, fast pace, etc). Good quality of the food but simple menu with all the common pieces. So if you’re just getting into sushi/ not the most adventurous eater, this one is for you. I would definitely recommend doing the extended version of the menu, worth it. We got the sake and it was great as well.

Also have to compliment chef! He was a great time, charismatic, good energy and thoughtful with his craft.

I would rate my experience 3.5 stars. This was my first omakase and I left feeling underwhelmed and still hungry (we got Taco Bell after lol).

We did the 17 piece course and it honestly felt very rushed the whole time. We were done within an hour. I understand it’s a timed reservation but I would’ve felt MUCH better about the overall experience if we were given 1.5 hours for the 17 piece course. I was expecting more interactions/engagement with the chef, such as explaining each piece more in depth about where it came from, the flavor profile, etc. However, he only explained what each piece was and if we liked it after each round; overall engagement was very limited. I don’t blame him at all, he was quite busy serving 6 people 102 pieces of fish within an hour…

After we were finished with the omakase, the chef offered a la carte pieces to order. When he got to our group, I said we were still deciding and he said “Well you don’t have much time left”. He said it in a friendly tone but that comment made me feel even more rushed and soured the experience that we didn't end up ordering anything additional. We were then asked to move to the couches to “have mochi” and check out. While we were waiting, a different staff member came up and asked us if we were ready to check out. We mentioned the mochi and she asked if we had ordered it already. We were confused because the first staff member made it seem like the mochi was included in our experience. It was overall just a very awkward and confusing interaction.

In regards to the quality, the fish was delicious and super fresh but the portions felt small. The ambiance and decor were amazing and we enjoyed our drinks.

Overall, I’m not sure I would revisit. We felt rushed the whole time that it dampened the experience. I think others would have a better experience if they came in with clear expectations that they would be done within an hour, so here’s your PSA!

I had a 6p reservation for two on 3/12/23 and we arrived at 6:02p. The meal was absolutely delicious (5 stars!) but the end of the meal was a horrible experience. I emailed the restaurant and never received a response, so I’ve decided to share my experience with others.

We had the 17 course omakase and decided to have one extra hand roll. I am a person that likes to be present, so by no means was I checking my phone/time during this experience. We were never given a time reminder, but instead had the hostess come over and say “we’re going to need these seats”, all the while we were just waiting on the check as anyone would at the end of a meal. All good, we start to get up, but a few seconds go by when another woman (not the hostess) we hadn’t seen before walks up and rudely says “we’re going to need you to move over here now”… mind you, we were in the process of grabbing our stuff and still wondering where our check was.

Finally, the hostess takes my card, runs it, I am standing there waiting for a receipt, trying to get anyone’s attention so I can get a copy, no service… so I just grabbed my card out of the machine, because handing it back to me certainly was not a part of the close out process, and walked out scratching my head. Such a wonderful food experience followed by such an incredibly rude ending.

I am no stranger to the restaurant industry and I can tell you that just a couple of kind words (for example, “ladies, let’s move you over to the couch, so we can close you out”) and attention until the end would have gone a long way. With all the other omakase experiences in our city, I’m not sure I’ll be returning.
