RYUU ASIAN BBQ SUSHI & THAI is a restaurant located in Chicago, Illinois. It offers a unique blend of Korean barbecue, sushi, and Thai food. They strive to create a memorable dining experience for all. They offer a variety of dishes that cater to different tastes, making it the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or a special occasion with family.
What was supposed to be a great birthday celebration turned into us trying to hurry and leave due to the lack of service we were receiving and witnessing other tables receiving assistance at anytime time. It felt as though we were being profiled as we were the only mixed or black people in the restaurant. We tried to not think of it like that but after time after time not getting assisted without having to get someone’s attention what else could we think… 20% gratuities applied automatically is fine but not with the service we received.

Overall, it's not a place I'll be visiting again.
Pros:
- Very friendly staff
- It's fun to cook your own food over a fire
- The menu is decently long for an all you can eat place
Cons:
- The food itself left something to be desired (personally, I don't like it when meat disintegrates into sand with each bite, nor do I like tofu to have a very sour interior while coated in cinnamon sugar for some reason. I might just not be the target consumer, though.)
- The restaurant was extremely loud despite there only being 3 tables full. Most of that is due to the music being blasted.
- It was very, very warm. Yes, I know, open flames makes it hard to be cooled down, but they opened a window at the end of my groups meal that made so much difference it was insane. It was just under 70° out, so that speaks volumes.
- The restaurant has old wine bottles up as decoration but there were several that had their own pet life forms growing in them that made it kinda hard to eat after noticing.
I wanted to like it, and it was fun to have a cooking experience with friends, but personally the only good thing that came out of this for me was the appetizers.

Honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had in a small place like this. I'm surprised they haven't expanded yet. The meat for the smokeless grill they have you use is amazing and the family bbq bundle I got with my sibling and Partner was worth the price. The desserts were great too. The waitress for out table was very kind and even gave us an extra helping of miso soup. Definitely going back here again for a special event soon

This place is awesome. Best variety of options for the all you can eat portion out of any Korean bbq place out there. Treated us awesome and gave us free dessert on my birthday. Let us spin a wheel and got a free fried rice to go! Love the food here.

This is a great AYCE place to host a dinner with friends! The service is fantastic, and while they have strict guidelines surrounding the AYCE they also include a very solid array of options into the AYCE menu, including (!!) ice cream for the end of your meal as well as vegetarian options :)))

At first the meat was good but afterwards we got rotting shrimp, and really really tough and chewy. It was really good at first but unfortunately went very disappointingly downhill after the first round. The appetizers are pretty good!

I am giving Ryuu 1 star because I can’t go lower.
We have eaten at Ryuu many times in the past, even right after the pandemic, and we always had a delicious meal with kind, attentive servers. The waitresses would bring extra bowls of Korean pickles before we even finished our first, and miso soup was included in our ala carte entrees.
Tonight we came with family who had never eaten there before and we were actually embarrassed.First, they have gone to an all you can eat format at $32 a head, but there are cautions on the menu that if you don’t finish, you will be charged $5 a head penalty. The menus are shoddy and worn out. We were not informed of the change when we reserved, nor were we told that a 20% gratuity was included.
The portions of beef were not marinated and were cut in a Much different way than before. We had to ask for rice because they didnt provide it, and the rice was cold, as was the tea.
Sadly, we will not return.

Cute atmosphere, but the food was a solid 3/10. We ordered the spicy bulgogi (had no spice whatsoever) and the LA Kalpi meat and they were both drenched in marinade to the point where you couldn’t even enjoy it. The grill was barely hot so it also took pretty long to cook. Lastly, I recommend you skip the ice cream. We ordered the green tea matcha and the strawberry flavors and they were not good. Do yourself a favor and go to Iron Age instead.

Some of the appetizers were good. The temperature of the stove was too low all the time even when we turn it to the max. So it took forever to cook the meat. When we were about to leave there were more costumers and the smoke was crazy due to lack of ventilation. The service definitely didn’t worth 20%. They rarely come ask and even when I ask them to come(cuz we were in a rush) they don’t. We had to order more rice and appetizers to get full cuz it took so long for meat.

Decent all you can eat. We ordered a lot and ate a lot. Def get a grill table that’s the funnest part. They charge $5 per dish you don’t finish but are great at pacing and getting out food. We took it easy and kept adding dishes and they came out quick. The only thing we weren’t fans of was the calamari. And the fan faves were spicy ribeye, spicy bugolgi, and the pork dumplings. Also great cocktails! Try the lychee (sans simple if you don’t like too sweet) cocktail or the white iver-san cocktail.

I loved this place!!! Highly highly recommend for the quality of the food. Everything from the meat selection, appetizers, drink menu, and even sauces are top notch. If there is any critique, food comes out a little slow but we were a table of six during peak dinner time. This is a must go to place for any kbbq lover!

This is my go to place and I’ve been a customer here for a year. I’ve always had good service , fast and prompt, and the servers were always great . However recently we brought my siblings who were from out of town to experience it for the first time and it was not up to expectations .
Service seemed to be low staffed today which I understand however the newer servers didn’t seem too friendly as well and never smiled . The food took forever to come out and reorder to the point we were sitting for a while between meat grilling. The food was great however i was a not impressed by the service today.

Food was fine and the atmosphere was fine. My biggest issue is that this all you can eat kbbq restaurant does not have the proper vents to get rid of the smoke. Once the flame is too high then the server will immediately run over and turn down the cooking temperature. They turn it down so low that it takes forever to cook the meats we ordered for all you can eat. This makes it not worth imo because I'm trying to be able to cook food in a timely manner and get my moneys worth. I will not be coming back here until they get the proper equipment. The server yesterday had to sprint to my table like he was running a 40 yard dash. Very disappointed as we had a party of 6 and spent most of our time staring at each other vs all you can eat kbbq.
Visited 2 years ago
We had a very rude waitress named Tina, basically yelling and madly dropping grills on us because we used the wrong grill (seafood grill vs grill for pork belly) … you can tell the food quality is low too, meat looks weird and about to go bad. We barely ate anything. Never coming here again.

Second time coming. Service was good, establishment is nice but waitress didn't speak much English and didn't understand our requests. It's not real kbbq if that's what you're looking for but decent asian fusion foods. Meat came out discolored (as if it was left out too long) but appetizers were pretty good. So we went there on April 21st to celebrate my brother's birthday, and as we entered, the hostess greeted us with an attitude and unfriendly overall. She asked us what we wanted, and not how can we help you like she did with people in front of us. She sat them immediately, and her attitude towards them was different. She(I didn't get her name she was chubby mid-30s? Asian woman with short hair) side eyes and asked us if we had a reservation, and we said no and paused for a second and was trying to deter us away until she mentions that we have tables but no grill and we have to clean them, again paused and continued because we answered that's fine well take the table she side eyed us again and took a few minutes to get back to us. She comes back and tells us that the tables have no grills that we if wanted the grills, we should have made a reservation and again we said that's fine we don't the grills we were ok with not having that experience she once again side eyed us and asked us to follow her she sped up and sat us down and walked away. She really didn't want us there. We're Hispanic, and we saw that we weren't the demographic they're used too but to assume a lot of things and there were a lot of things I wanted to tell her but I chose not too because I was my brother's birthday. The waiter who waited for us was AMAZING! (I didn't get his name, but he was an average height Asian man with short longish hair, thin body type) we didn't know what to get, he recommended the food we should try he was attentive and over all really friendly he made up the unpleasant experience with the hostess. But to be honest, I won't be returning to this establishment if people working there are willing to behave and profile people like that, it isn't worth spending my money in a place where they'll treat my family like that. I would rather spend it in a place where I feel welcomed and respected .

Food was tasty but service was abysmal. Not the workers’ fault. The restaurant was clearly overworking two poor servers. I got the all you can eat. After the meat was served, the sauce for the meat didn’t come until a half hr later and we weren’t able to order a second round until even later because the servers were in such a rush you couldn’t stop them for a moment. An hour and a half later, we finally get our second round and the kitchen immediately closed right after. It was an incredible long wait for a very underwhelming experience. Besides the service, the food and ambience is good enough for 5 stars.

The food was alright. It's all you can eat but you only have 1.5 hours to do it and anything you don't finish gets added to your check. The servers were very informative and helpful and we had an amazing meal, but the crowd inside the restaurant has been very rowdy, most likely from the deep south of Chicago.......
Overall it was a good experience, but I cannot leave 5 stars because of the atmosphere at the moment.

I had high hopes for this place based off these reviews. To start off I am not new to AYCE KBBQ so I know traditionally what to expect. This place let me down in every way, we got sat immediately because it was slow maybe 5 tables tops with 5 servers on the floor. We ordered 2 appetizers that never showed up and it took 20-30 mins for my soda to show up. Took about 1 hour for us to even get asked if we wanted more items. Overall service was quite poor and slow.
Now on to the food itself, everything is sweet from the sugar marinade. The sides were subpar at best and the meat was even worse, especially the brisket. The brisket isn’t your traditional thin cut but rather this super stringy/fatty meat closely resembling the scraps I would give a dog. We ended up just getting the porkbelly and flat iron which were both again sugary.
Overall we tried to find something that would make this a decent experience but with a slow restaurant it shouldn’t have been that bad especially for $80. Will not be returning anytime soon.

The all you can eat here is the best ! Great music and good drinks too ! Definitely must stop by and check it out 🔥

Restaurant Rule according to our waitress: you can only order 4 meats at a time. Your time starts when you enter your order, so make sure everyone in your party is present.
Constantly being reminded of food waste charges before we put our order in is annoying AF. We were reminded so often of food waste charges that we just gave up trying to order side dishes, appetizers, and carbs.
I'd recommend ordering unmarinated meats to avoid the grill pans from charring, as we experienced slow service and the grill burnt to crisp. Water is slow to be refilled.
There's meter parking. Kids under 6 are free.
Get your free mochi ice cream. At least those come out quickly.
This isn't an authentic Korean BBQ joint. Keep in mind that this is a fusion of Thai-Korean. The meats are Korean style and the sides are Thai.

Came a second and last time. Got the same rude waitress. She got flustered easily and made us feel like we were a bother, but she got her 20% tip since they automatically apply it to the bill. Not worth the money for such treatment and mediocre food overall.
Chicken was off and thin brisket was all fatty and not as good as other kbbqs we’ve been to. Overall not so great quality of meats offered.
Appetizers are good but meat inside the steamed buns was cold no matter which meat we chose (chicken, pork and beef).
Didn’t even make it to the 60 minute mark before she reluctantly asked if we wanted anything else but was rushing us out by cleaning and handed the bill before we could respond. She got even more annoyed when we asked for a dessert.
Then there’s a staff member on lunch and publicly displaying his knack for picking his nose and playing with his boogers. Lovely.
Overall: mediocre meat, decent-ish appetizers, and rude/gross staff.

They house an all you can eat Korean BBQ option and also an a la carte option. Depending on what you're looking for you might be looking at varying wait times. Although they do offer reservations, unlike some other Korean BBQ AYCE locations, so it can guarantee you a spot
I thought I'd give them another chance to see if the first time was a fluke, but I was proven wrong. Service can be quite slow when doing the AYCE option so I highly recommend ordering a lot and often. Otherwise you'll be spending a good portion of your 90 minute limit waiting for your next order to come in. They do offer fountain drink free refills but be careful because it is only for Pepsi, diet Pepsi and sierra mist. If you order a diet coke you'll end up paying for another can if you want more during your meal.
The atmosphere is minimalistic urban modern and izakaya vibes. Cocktails are roughly inexpensive 10-15 and beers can be in the 7 dollar range.
I'd recommend the spicy tuna crunchy avocado as an appetizer.

Walked out. Hostess was quite rude. When finally seated, excessive wait to even get water. Mind you they were not busy and fully staffed. The kicker was witnessing a server use the restroom not wash her hands, then hand silverware to her table. Will never attempt to eat there again, don’t care how good the food “might be.”

Came here with my husband for a New Year’s Eve dinner. We have been here before, but it’s been a few years. It was very delicious and our sever was very helpful with explaining the process to us again.
I just have two negatives. We said that my husband had a peanut allergy, our server asked if he can have peanut oil or not peanuts at all. We specified that he is okay with peanut oil (he’s eaten at places that cook their fries and meat in peanut oil) but otherwise he cannot have anything with peanuts and not to bring anything with them since I didn’t want to possibly transfer it to him with a kiss. Well one of the sides he brought over had full sized peanuts in it. Thankfully, it was obvious and we asked him to take it away, but it was concerning that it could have been given to us in a less obvious form.
The other negative is that when you do the all you can eat option, you’re not allowed to take any leftovers home. I do understand in a way because people can try to take advantage of it, that’s why they also charge you a fee per plate you don’t touch. The only issue with that is that we had a little meat and rice left, like enough for a small meal, and although we weren’t charged for that, we couldn’t take it home. So it just felt wasteful in that way.
But truly the good outweighs the bad and I would recommend this place! Just be prepared to be in a happy food coma!

Excellent experience! We are from downstate and we're looking for a place for our first Korean BBQ experience. It was all pretty straight forward! The spicy bulgogi beef was amazing.
If you haven't done this before, be aware it does take a while for it to heat up. Don't get impatient and throw meat on too quick and wonder why it isn't hot.
All the little condiment trays were delicious. The pickled cucumberd and kimchee were delicious. Didn't care for the pickled apples, but that's me..

If you’re in the mood for AYCE Korean BBQ, this is the place. There were three of us on a Sunday around 6pm. I would recommend getting a reservation if going for BBQ. The dining room is a bit small, and by time we left, all BBQ tables were taken. There is an area for people who just want to order off the regular menu and there were plenty of tables.
The Food… wow. Wow wow wow. They start by bringing all the traditional Korean side dishes (seaweed, a variety of pickled veggies, and some fried eggs). Then our ordered dishes. From the Edamame to the boa buns, all of the appetizers were great. A few favorites? Chicken wings (not Korean style but just tasty 🤤), see ew noodles (did mine with beef), and fried oysters. My wife absolutely loved their crab Rangoon. The BBQ was incredible. We got the traditional Bul-go-GI beef, brisket, ribeye, Shrimp, baby octopus, and a few veggies. The only thing I wouldn’t get again is the baby octopus. Every thing else 10/10. We topped the meal off with some very tasty mochi ice cream.
The Service… very good. Our server was very sweet and attentive. She helped us navigate the menu, gave great recommendations, and was personable. They include a 20% gratuity on the bill for service, and she made us want to leave more. 10s across the board.

I came here with a group of friends on a Saturday for AYCE. We were hopeful it would be more satisfying and authentic than Iron Age, but left sorely disappointed. The service was a little slow and not the friendliest, despite not being super busy as we were the first table seated after they opened at 3 pm. First of all, the table we were sitting at wasn't very clean. There were food particles on the chairs and the grill had black remnants from the night before. We ended up using pork belly to clean off the grill ourselves prior to grilling our own meat.
Secondly, we thought it was odd that the table we were seated at was for 6 people but for some reason the grill was located at one end of this table which meant we had to serve the 5th person who wasn't close enough to the table the entire time.
Next, the menu states certain items are available Unmarinated. But when we asked the waitress about getting the rib eye unmarinated, she told us it would need to be a few hours since the meat was still defrosting?? She had a bit of an attitude until we asked her what was the point in having something on your menu if it wasn't available...needless to say, we were forced to eat the marinated version.
The worst moment occurred after we ordered the beef brisket. It was the ugliest excuse for beef I've seen in my entire life! It looked like dog scraps and it was very stringy and mostly fat. We couldn't bring ourselves to eat that so we had it sent back. Waitress gave attitude about taking it back and only did so after two members of the party refused to eat it. We stuck with the LA galbi and flat iron beef options which tasted reasonable.
Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. Not worth it for $42 after tax and tip. Will not be returning under my own free will...

We tried all you can eat for $32 per person. Price is good, but meat quality is poor. The meat is not well marinated, flavorless. Spicy bulgogi for example, tastes very different than it is supposed to be. It was sweet and bland. May options from the menu for sure, but the main bbq is dissappointing.

If you're looking for Korean BBQ in Logan Square, give this place a shot! My boyfriend and I have been here a few times now and the food is beyond delicious. I definitely recommend the pork belly and spicy octopus, as well as all of the side dishes (be sure to take advantage of their all you can eat flat rate). If you can, make a reservation and ask for Patty; she's very knowledgeable and an absolute delight! Everything is well worth the price and wait, but expect to spend at least a couple of hours here. Get a pitcher of Kirin or Sapporo while you wait, settle in, and enjoy!

It’s Korean BBQ place. All you can eat or A la carte menu. I love the beef selections, they are great and tasty. We had All you can eat which included appetizer, choices of Beef, pork, chicken, seafood and veggies, ice cream and mochi. oh and all the sides dishes. The server are great. Recommended to make a reservation because it’s busy and it’s not big place. The gratuity is also included 20% in the bill but if u like to add extra, they won’t complain 😉would come back again.

The food was very low quality and mediocre. There's an automatic 20% gratuity even though service was not great. I think the menu is great, but the AYCE menu is too extensive so it's a competition between quanity and quality. Quantity definitely won. I don't recommend it.

Excellent food. My first experience with Asian cuisine so I'm not the best to analyze. Cooking at the table was fun with family. Hope to return soon to try more. Excellent service!

Came here with a party of 5 on a Sunday night for the all-you-can-eat option for $32 per person. The appetizers, grilled meats and veggies, dessert - everything was delicious, prices were quite reasonable, and the ambiance is really cozy and fun. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Overall, great experience and highly recommended. Great place for dinner for groups, celebrations, or romantic and friend dates.

There family package is great. U can get a table with the grill in the middle and they give u the meat to cook already marinated. It served 4 of us.The sides are awesome also. They have individual plates also. Only downfall we ordered a few things and they had run out of like 3 things we ordered. We spent 118 without tip.

Bad experience, rude customer service. Went there 1.5 hours before closing time but server was very pushy.

Food was great but service was awful. We had issues with the grill (kept turning off) and it was really hard to get help. Aside from the technical issue, staff was not attentive - borderline rude - and it took so long to get anything. Because of the grill issue, we couldn’t have desert since we were running out of time. Considering it was their fault, it was handled poorly. Even when the grill was working, no one check on us unless we stop them on their way to the kitchen and they seemed annoyed to have to help.

This is probably one of the worst BBQ experiences I've ever had.
The grill took forever to cook the meat even on the highest setting and somehow the top of the meat was cold even when taken right off the grill? The meat that should take a minute or two, we sat around for at least 6 minutes each for.
The meat was all overly sweet for some reason? Even the pork belly?
Our waitress also seemed to have a bad attitude and would seem annoyed every time we asked for something.
The kimchi fried rice was extremely dry and tasted bland. The waitress also made it a point to stop by the table to tell us in the middle of our meal that if we don't finish at least half, we'll get charged for it.
At one point, she came to change the grill and we had a tower to hold the plates of meat to be cooked. She put the tower with plates still on it on the floor next to my feet to change the grill because it was in her way, then brought it back up on the table and started putting the meat from the tower onto the grill???
I will never be back. Overpriced, unsanitary, and overwhelmingly unimpressed. I left still hungry and thoroughly confused and disgusted by the whole experience.

Food was great, however the low rating is unfortunately due to the staff. We had a difficult time hearing the waiter due to the mask and music. Because of this we had to ask them to repeat themselves a few times and they seemed very annoyed by this. Towards the end of the meal the waiter was short and made us feel uncomfortable. We ordered a fried rice and a couple of sides that never came to the table. Will definitely think twice before coming here again.

We booked a reservation for 9:30 and when we got there the waiter said we couldn't do the all you can eat BBQ because it takes 90 minutes. We ended up having to spend way more $ ordering off the single serving menus and not the all you can eat. If you cannot do the all you can eat 90 minutes before closing then the information should be disclosed when the reservation is placed. The waiter didn't really give us any secondary option and was telling us she'd have to move our seating if we didn't pick a menu item to cook at the burner table, which was also more expensive than just getting something from the kitchen and being able to stay in the seat i'm in. It was a frustrating experience.

Do not order the all you can eat. They will charge you for each plate you cant finish and they will not allow you to take it home. Makes no sense to get charged for food you cant finish in one sitting and they would rather throw away food and still charge you then to let you take a to go box.

my sister and i came here for the AYCE on a trip for her birthday. during covid times they were of course short staffed, which is very common and i have sympathy for. of course not their fault and i can imagine it’s very stressful to deal with!
overall our experience was pretty poor. our main issue was that the waiter was a bit rude to us and we did not receive any side dishes. the music playing was very loud and we had a hard time hearing our waitress between that and the high capacity of the restaurant. she got a bit short with us when we couldn’t hear her. we of course could have asked if it came with side dishes but when i asked if it came with rice she replied “it does if you ask, but i won’t know unless you tell me” as if i was in the wrong for just asking.
the meat was pretty decent but we didn’t have anything to accompany it besides the rice, including no sauces. as they were short staffed it did take quiet a bit longer for us to receive the food but ordering a soju(comes bottled) took about 30 minutes.
overall we didn’t have a very good experience and felt like we were burdening the staff, especially being the only ones around who didn’t have side dishes, which is an essential part of korean BBQ.

My experience here was bad. I ordered over the phone and was told my order would be ready in 15mins. I showed up 15mins after and one of the servers told me the order would be “ready soon”. I waited and waited.. finally an additional 20mins went by and I asked the server if my order was almost done. It looked as if she could careless, once again she quickly dismissed me and told me it would be “ready soon”. The worst part is that the restaurant was not even busy.. it looked like there was a total of 3 tables dining in. 2 of them had ordered while I was there, so I’m not sure what the long wait was for. Eventually I ended up walking out and ordering out from somewhere else.

I had a reservation but was not able to reach there on time, Still they accommodated us. We were a group of 4. The service is up to the make. But I won’t say the food was good. It was more on the sweet side which I didn’t expect since most of Korean bbq I had was on the spicy side. The grill was not that great to cook on. It was taking too much time to cook. Just for an experience one can go for once.

the individual portions they bring out for the all you can eat are WAY too big. There is no way to try all the things you want without getting that $5 surcharge per plate you didn’t eat. For example, I asked for zucchini and they brought an entire plate of sliced zucchini when I could have definitely been good with a quarter of the portion they gave me. So, I ended up wasting their product and my bill was higher. I would say do NOT do the all you can eat without a group of a least four people.
