Ono Hawaiian/Asian infused foods & Sushi bar
I have a warning for everyone coming in a large group. We came here for a birthday party. We split the bill a few different ways between the 3 families. At the end when they took our card they didn't bring a bill and just asked for our cards. After they ran our cards, our waiter ONLY brought back the slip that asks for a signature and a tip, but did not bring back the slip that shows what we all ordered. I asked for the other slip so I could see everything I was being charged. Some items were incorrect, and they had added a gratuity. I understand perfectly well that a gratuity is custom for a big group, but our waiter thought he'd be clever and only bring the slip that asks for a signature and a tip so you couldn't see that you already paid a gratuity. Dirty work, and he knows what he was doing. When I asked for the other slip, he ran and got it, and it was already printed.
As far as the food goes, everything was just fine. Service was slow, but it was busy, so being slow was understandable. We were hungry and the hawaiian food was yumm.
We ordered a few sushi rolls and there was a lot going on and the flavors all just sort of mashed together. Wouldnt do those again except for the basic ones.
I'd be hesitant to go here again and I'd make sure to keep the waiter honest.

New updated review after not coming here for around 4 years. We showed up around an hour before closing which probably played to them running out of some food that I originally ordered and we did wait a bit. But they offered a different dish and a discount for the mishap. The food they brought out was very presentable and enjoyable. Hannah B did a wonderful job as our server also she was the only server there working when we came, and she even had to help a party of 10 with some other small groups including us. Very friendly and welcoming. Prices are very respectable for the dine in experience you get and even cheaper than some fast food choices. I personally got the katsu chicken as my replacement and they have sushi options available as well. Would come again.

Would like to speak about a small restaurant you want to go out of your way to visit. Just say no to mediocre and get fresh, chef prepared food. This family owned place was great. My wife had a tuna avocado salad and I had the pork sandwich and fries. We were hungry and decided to splurge and start with vegetarian tempura and added a volcano roll sushi. The tempura was outstanding and the volcano roll unique. The roll had a special sauce which made it unique however, I very much enjoyed the flavor. Shout out to Colby our waiter foe his attentiveness and service, the owner chefs and everyone else. We'll be back if in the area. Thanks

Love this restaurant and so glad we tried it! Ono grindz for sure! We lived in Hawai’i for 13+ years and this is truly amazing and authentic “local” Hawaiian and Japanese food.
The owners are so nice and put their heart into the business. Everyone who enters the doors are treated like Ohana (family). Even the epic murals on all the walls and in the bathrooms were painted by the owners!
Loved the food! Loved the service! Loved talking story with Auntie Irina! (Sorry if I spelled the name wrong).
We will be back for sure every time we are in town to visit our daughter at BYU-Idaho. We tried the Nu’u sushi roll….SOOO good! Awesome recommendation from the server. Also ordered the Mahi Mahi with veggie tempura, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef. Mmmmm good! Too full to try dessert menu so next time.

The tempura was great, the pork buns were fine, but I expected a bit more from the pineapple chicken. I don’t recommend the pineapple chicken, but the pork and barbecue sauce were great and I will be going back for those. Dinner takes awhile, but I have found that the longer the food takes, the higher the quality. Americans are used to frozen prep food so we tend to complain about a bit of wait, not realizing that food made in the kitchen when you order it takes a lot longer.

Good job to the owner and staff of this little gem!
1st time in Rexburg on a tour of BYU Campus before daughter starts hers college life and we were looking for a spot to hang out. This place definitely delivered.
Very pleasant and friendly staff. Location is super close to Campus (then again everything is haha).
Food selection is better than expected for a small town.
When we were told the burger was big, this was not an exaggeration (at first almost didn’t get it since we have a long list of excellent burger places back home in Texas, but so glad we got it! Thing is huge and made with quality beef)
Sushi was decent and would try others. Hawaiian meat dishes were also yummy but chicken was a little cold.
The one thing I’d say can improve is speed. Could be the small town feel or how busy it got and might be understaffed but improving this would make and even better experience next time we come to town.

My husband and I dropped by Da Pineapple Grill tonight to try the sushi. Needless to say, we did not leave disappointed.
We ordered the Honalulu Sushi Sampler and the Kanoe 2 roll. We were happy with the variety from the sampler and loved the taste and texture of the Kanoe. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere has a fun tropical getaway feel to it.
The only thing that could use some improvement is the wait time. We sat at our table for about 50 minutes without any updates or anyone checking in, and we had just ordered the 2 sushi rolls. We were starting to wonder if they’d forgotten us.
But overall, it was a good experience and we will most likely come back.

Will Not Return
We were not warned of the mandatory gratuity that would be added on our party of 7, which we only had 4 adults the rest were babies that did not get waited on. We were confused because the babies didn’t order food nor did they make a mess that required more cleaning, one of them was even asleep the whole time! Also? They did NOT give us an itemized bill, so we knew our total was wrong, went through added everything up and realized something was wrong. I feel that it is dishonest to not tell people you are charging a tip AND THEN ASK FOR MORE TIP WHEN THEY DIDNT KNOW THEY WERE GETTING CHARGED THE FIRST ONE. Irritating but not the worst part. We were at this restaurant for over 2 hours. It took them 40mins just to get our appetizers out, and then another 40 minutes to get our food, which we had to ask for. The ENTIRE TIME it was so loud, there was music(that mustve been coming from the joint Nextdoor) that was so obnoxious and we couldn’t even hear each other talk. The waitress was nice but did not visit us often enough. The only good thing about this visit was the food but it doesn’t make up for the horrible environment.

First and last time I go here! I called at 6:39 and did a pick up order. They told me it would be 25 minutes before it was ready. So I got there right at 7:05. Thinking I would go in and pick up the food. 1st of all the whole set up inside is crazy! No where to pick up your food, just tables everywhere. So I stand at the bar just waiting. 5 minutes later a waitress asks how she can help me. I tell her I need to pick up my order. She brings me a ticket, I pay and then tells me she will bring me the food when it’s ready! Like what?????? So I wait till 7:27. I just don’t understand. It was literally pulled pork and Mac salad!!!! So unimpressed by the whole experience, and then to have the food be so underwhelming! Total waste of time and money!

I never write reviews but this needs to be heard. I have never experienced such poor service, and no one should ever go here!!! I don’t normally care if the service is bad if the food is good but this is where I draw the line. This used to be my favorite restaurant that I frequented but I will not be returning here after last Thursday.
We called to make a reservation but were informed they don’t take reservations. No problem, we had tried to reserve it before with no success but we were always able to get in, even with bigger groups. When we arrived with our group at about 6:30, they asked if we were the group of 20 who had made a reservation. (How did they make a reservation but we couldn’t?) We had a 10 or so minute wait to be seated before being put in the corner, out of the waitresses view.
After we were seated, the group of 20 arrived and another group about our number of guests, 13 or so, were also seated. We watched as the waitresses took their orders and got them drinks while we were left in the corner. It took them a good 20 minutes to get our drinks and maybe 30 more for those drinks to get to us. The two tables with large groups who arrived AFTER us received their food before they had even taken our order. At this point we were frustrated. It had been over an hour. I knew service here is normally slow, but this was ridiculous. Some of our group had time to even leave to pack up and check out of their hotel before coming back. Still no sign of food and no waitresses. We realized that the restaurant had actually closed at this point, 8:00. Some of our group even had to leave because of young children and health conditions.
We waited over TWO HOURS before getting our food. Normal, good restaurants at least offer free drinks or dessert if the wait is longer than normal. I would have expected this at a 45 minute wait or even an hour. 2 hours is not acceptable. One of the waitresses even spilled a drink on one of us as the food arrived. They clearly just ignored our group and gave priority to the people who came after us because they forgot they put us in the corner where they didn’t see us. This place needs to get themselves together. They need to hire more people and teach better practices to their employees. It’s such a shame that their service is such an obstacle to the good food they serve. Will not return and will be spreading the word.
TLDR: we waited 2+hours for food, 2 big groups came after us and they were served before us, extremely poor service

So good. I like that there is so much variety for all the picky eaters in my family, everyone found something they liked . The servers are super friendly and give the right amount of attention . Our drinks were always full , the food came out hot and crispy, and everything had good flavor. I had the berto special which I enjoyed because it's like sampling 4 different meals. Definitely going again

Our family all loved our food. Huge portions. Gluten free options.
My one huge disappointment was being quite surprised by automatic gratuity being added. We are good tippers and we're an average family of 5. To unexpectedly charge us 15% for gratuity at this casual dining restaurant was confusing.... And we were confused on if this goes to the server? Do we still tip on top. There was only one server for the whole place, she was great, food was fast. She was busy. So we either gave her the worst tip of 10% or a great tip of 25%. In the US custom is gratuity is used for larger parties, high end fine dining. It felt wrong to be unclear and NOT tip her. So we tipped more. Bringing our $80 meal to over $120 which was NOT what we had budgeted for our outing. So again, great place. Just disappointed and confused about this pay structure.

While I thought the sushi and miso soup was good, waiting over an hour to get your food is not acceptable. It took over an hour for us to get our sushi. There were only two wait staff and two cooks from what I could tell. Believe me when I say while the sushi was good it’s not worth the wait, go somewhere else.

We wanted to try something new. We decided on this place cause it sounded good, and looked good. Sad to say that was really all that was good. We were the second group there and it took over an hour to get our food. When it did finally come out it tasted as if it sat around for 30min. If they were busy I would understand, but like I said we were the only other group there. Maybe the cook could make more food if he was not hiding under the bar to look at his phone. I am not one to care if you look at your phone, but when service is that slow....I would say pass on this place and go to another sushi/island grill. Also if you get a drink it should be unlimited refills not just one.

I haven't been here for a long time so hopefully they've gotten better. When my family went to try it out, it took a whole hour and a half to get our food. (I timed it). The food was good, but it tasted less good since I was starving by the time it came out. They might have been understaffed.
Edit: I went there again and the wait was only 45 minutes. This is still long, but the food was worth the wait. Something I didn’t realize before is that Da Pineapple is an actual restaurant and not an in between joint like Applebees or Wingers. The fact that it has a little longer wait makes it an ideal place to hangout with your friends or for dates. I think the reason they take longer is because they cook every plate individually and the food is as fresh as it can be. So if you’re looking for a place where you can hang out a bit before eating, this is a great option.

Cozy, clean, and best curry I've ever eaten. I like curry, but sometimes when eating an Indian or Thai curry dish I get tired of the strong curry taste. By the end of my meal, I'm just tolerating the curry and no longer enjoying it. However, I ordered the Hawaiian chicken curry at Da Pineapple Grill and loved every bite. It is milder than most Indian and Thai curry but still a great curry dish. I highly recommend it to you.

We had a party of five that are dinner around 6:45pm on a Saturday night. They were in the tail end of being busy.
As a group we ordered a couple sushi rolls and each ordered an entree. I ordered a Pina colada since they had run out of Dr. Pepper. (How did a restaurant run out of a canned beverage? Poor planning?) The Pina colada tasted only on pineapple. No coconut and definitely no cream- straight pineapple and ice. The food took a long time to show up.
The sushi rolls eventually showed up. The more traditional Dragon roll was okay. The Hawaiian one I ordered was a mix of flavors that was off-putting. The sweet and spicy idea was good but not mixed with the raw tuna on top.
The teriyaki chicken was great. The teriyaki beef was just okay but it did come as a huge portion size. The pineapple chicken looked like they just took the teriyaki chicken, dipped it in tempura batter, deep fried it, and poured a super-sweet sauce over the top. The chicken katsu was just okay, again with a extremely sweet sauce poured over it over it. The Kahlua pork was the best part of the meal. It was just the right salty and smokey. The house mustard sauce was unique and delightful!
Unfortunately, every time we needed something (more water, more soda pop, more napkins) our server was impossible to find. One person in our party even mentioned that we'd been needed and forgotten based on the service.
The atmosphere was open and friendly. The sign said "please wait to be seated" and ironically the sushi guys had to yell in the neck for the two servers to come out and do their jobs. I don't know if they have the servers cooking in the back, too, but the service was noticeably lacking.

Aloha. Island food on island time. Would say the experience was below average. We ordered pork sandwiches and the the chefs Honolulu Sushi Sampler. The pork sandwiches were good but not great. The fries were also good. The Sushi Sampler was good but not worth the hour plus wait on a busy night. Loved the flavor and felt the ingredients were good quality. Food presentation was also great. About an hour in as another table received their food who sat after us, I had to ask for an update. Still didn’t come out for another 10 minutes. Love the murals on the wall. The temperature and music volume were perfect. The bill was incorrect when given to us. It’s probably tough to find great service at a fair price.

My favorite sushi place on the mainland! It's more of the Polynesian version of sushi rather than traditional Japanese sushi, which is great if you like your sushi cooked! We've tried many different rolls and the Johnny Lingo is one of our favorites. Their spam musubi and teriyaki chicken are also fantastic! While sometimes it can take a while for the food to arrive, it's always worth the wait. Atmosphere is relaxing with Hawaiian music and a mural painted on the wall. Almost can imagine being on the islands instead of the middle of Rexburg.

The first red flag should have been when we walked in the door and every unoccupied table was full of dirty dishes and old food. After we ordered we waiting nearly an hour only to be served food that you could find in an elementary school cafeteria. Tough chicken, and flavorless sides. The sushi was completely inedible. It was soggy and an unbearable room temperature. Even if it tasted better I wouldn’t be able to get over the fact that it seemed to have been sitting on a counter unattended for two business days. To top it all off, they have the audacity to charge $50 for two entrées and a sushi roll. Highly overrated. Will not return.

I called and drove 30 minutes, so when I got there in 30 minutes my food would be ready. When I got there, they had not taken my order at all and took my order when I got there in person to pick it up making me wait 40 more minutes for it to be ready. A total of waiting 1 hour and 10 minutes for my meal to be ready, when over the phone, the woman who took my order said it would be 20 to 25 minutes for it to be ready. Mind you, the restaurant was not busy at all when I got there. Only one table was dining in at the I arrived. They attend the dine in customers promptly, but I was forgotten and left waiting a very long time when I had called ahead of time. I am never coming back here again, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

The sushi was great, and the gyoza are always a favorite. Our waiter was awesome. When the kitchen accidentally made our meal without our special request, the waiter came out and asked us if that was okay or if we would like them to remake it. I was very thankful that he realized it before we received our meal. Overall a great place to go for a nice dinner!

The food here is absolutely amazing! However, I wouldn't dine in unless you have a few hours to kill. Even if the place is empty it still takes forever to get your food and the servers hardly come around. We would just call and get it "to go" and they'd have it ready within 20-30mins. Other than that, the food is enough to keep us ordering!

This place has the best sushi! Never disappoints

This is the best sushi in rexburg, the portions for the rolls are what every sushi place should have nice and big. All of the rolls taste great and the servers are nice.

I will not be going back. Waited for over an hour to get a $20 mush plate of shrimp tempura with absolutely no taste with some watered down broth. After a hour I was done threw $30 on the table and walked out to never return.

Sushi didn’t seem fresh. Roll description had cream cheese and avocado. Small dot of cream cheese and smear of avocado. $1.25 for eel sauce. Wouldn’t go back for food, but our server Eli was very nice and did a great job!

TO DIE FOR. The food, the service, the memories… 10/10 would recommend. Server signed my napkin. LOVELY

The food and service were very good. The presentation and atmosphere of the place matched the aesthetic, and was overall a great experience.

I ordered the 10 oz Teriyaki burger and I was not disappointed. It was a huge amount of food, but left room for the tempura bananas for dessert. The pineapple slice and onion rings in the burger create an exciting blend of flavors with every bite. Our server was great and the food came out quickly. There was plenty of seating, and I'd say it's a very casual place.

Worth the wait. Food was awesome.

The food here is so amazing, my favorite for sure. But in all the many times I've been here they haven't once brought the food out in under 45-90 minutes. Even when you get here right at opening and no one else is here yet and even if you just order one sushi roll. It's not the servers fault either they just have the literal slowest kitchen. Don't come here if you're in a hurry and prepare to experience the slowest service you've ever had. The food is definitely worth it in my opinion though.

Not a place to take out of town family or friends. We had some family from out of town come for the Christmas special on campus. The wife has diet restrictions and has to stick to a strict schedule, which we got to the restaurant with plenty of time to accommodate, the waitress took our order, 20, 30, and 40 minutes passed, people that had come in long after us were already half into theirs meal, we didn't even have the appetizer yet, when the waitress came to give us the bill and ask if there was anything else needed...yes, the meal we had ordered over an hour ago. Meal finally came, parts were cold, the shrimp tempura batter was still raw. It had taken so long to get the first that it was now impossible to even get a replacement. It appeared this was the waitress' first shift and job, I know this is a college town, and staff isn't around for long, but a few more minutes at least to train them.

A decent selection of entrées, they even have an entire side menu for sushi. Portions are generous, and the staff are friendly, though stretched pretty thin when we went.

Food and service are great! They’re only open for dinner just for you to know.

The food is really great, but I recommend getting takeout rather than dining in. The wait for dining in is always really long, even if it isn't very busy. The floors are always sticky and I don't particularly enjoy the atmosphere and close proximity to other patrons. That being said, I keep going back because everything I order is very very good. Love the curry and chicken katsu, Teriyaki and Loco Moco. Maybe go for takeout though.

This was awesome! I grew up in Japan and I came for my birthday dinner. It did not disappoint! The miso soup was great and the sushi was absolutely delicious. We loved the paloke roll, and anything cooked will be good too. The service was attentive but not overbearing. Absolutely coming back and really happy to have good sushi in Idaho.

The food was good, not crazy good. The service could be better. The tables could use more spacing apart so that you don't hear everyone's conversations.

Not bad for Idaho. The menu layout was difficult and the mango salsa in one of my rolls was off putting. But I'll probably be back soon

We use to come here 15 years ago and we LOVE it! The Volcano Roll has changed a bit, it use to have more fries onion pieces on top and tasted a little different, but still great. The Hawaiian teriyaki chicken is amazing as ever and the fried banana dessert (sorry I forgot what it's called), I could eat everyday! It totally reminds me of the restaurant L & L in Hawaii!

They need more workers on Friday night. Waited for an hour for food.

Party of two went for dinner the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We were seated quickly, but the service was way too slow. Had to wait an hour for any food to arrive. We had the Red Dragon, and the sushi sampler, and the coconut shrimp. Food quality was good, but just kept us waiting for way too long. Also had to ask for wasabi.

The place to go to for Hawaiian food in Rexburg. Tried Kainoa's and it was pretty poor in quality although the way they prepped their spam was better, a little thinner and some crisp to it. Ordered a mixed plate, spam musubi, curry. The curry potatoes and carrots were cooked really well the disappointment was it was not beef cubes it was more the sliced beef used in barbeque beef. Also a bit more salt than I would like. Overall the best place for Hawaiian food that I've tried only thing missing from the plate was Mac salad. Would try other things from them if I was back in the area. Oh and the Mahi Mahi was very good and would order a plate of just that too.

I rarely ever give 5 stars. Maybe 5% or less of the time. This place is five stars. I didn't expect much from any restaurant way out in the country of Idaho but this place was fabulous and reasonably priced. We ordered a special sushi, tiki burgers, tempura shrimp, and da pineapple chicken.
Friendly people and great food. Eat here!

We love the pineapple grill. Best sushi in town. The wait is usually pretty long but we like it enough to keep going over and over again

The teriyaki chicken is so so goooood!! Loved the flavors of the chicken as well as the sauce!!! (I had it taken out once and the fries was soft, sad! Dine in experience had been great though!) The server was super cheerful and kind, matched the vibe of the restaurant! Sushi was ordinary.

Food was alright but it took about an hour to get it to the table and we hardly saw our waitress. When we asked about the gratuity fee the waiter gave a snarky response and walked away.
Visited 3 years ago
The food was good but it took literally 50 minutes for us to get it! We saw people LITERALLY come and go before we got out food and appetizers. On top of that, they added the gratuity to our checks without asking or even telling us before. I asked the waiter why and if we could take it out because the service wasn’t good and he said “we make $3/hr, so it’s just to help us out” and WALKED AWAY. Not the best experience.

After moving from Texas I have been in utter despair over the lack of quality food present in rexburg Idaho, thankfully after months of searching I have finally found a safe haven for my palate…. Da Pineapple grill , our outstanding and amazing server Daniel graciously provided us with the most amazing food this town has to offer. If you are looking for a scrumptious meal that will satisfy your soul look no further. The fries, the burger, the sushi, the appetizers everything straight from heaven. Service 10/10, food 12/10
We will be back soon!!!

The Johnny Lingo roll was my favorite! The flavors were light and fresh. The roll was huge! About the size of one and a half rolls at other sushi places.

Our waiter was the best. He almost dropped our sushi but didn't and it was a great save. He also was very concerned with my gluten free order. They even let us wait in their seating area to wait for our ride. 10/10

I'm a huge sushi lover. The more raw, the better and these guys have it figured out! They have a very good sushi menu that has something for everyone. My wife prefers tempura (cooked) and was happy to see a large selection of options as well. We recently ordered to-go, but decided to dine-in when we arrived because it wasn't super busy yet. Not sure if that affected our service, but the waiter forgot about us for 10ish minutes and we had to practically hunt him down for our bill so we could pay and leave. They also serve a fabulous mango guava cheesecake which is superb if you like sushi, give them a try.

If I could give no stars I would do it 100% we were waiting for more than 45 minutes and in the end the waitress asked for 15 more minutes. After reading the reviews for this place and going there myself it is a total different thing, definitely will not come back.

The sushi is good, they forgot the Wasabi and the chicken lettuce wraps are more spicy than I remember. They need to get a better phone system for call in orders as we got hung up on 3 times.

I'm gonna sound mean, but it needs to be said, my wife and I's visit to this place was embarrassing. We arrived at 6:30 and ordered quickly, however we didn't get our food until 7:15-7:20. My wife ordered sushi, the Philly roll, and it was terrible. The roll was 90% salmon, with 5% cream cheese and 5% avocado. If the salmon was good, wouldn't be terrible, except the salmon was saltier than the ocean and practically inedible. I got their item "Da pineapple chicken" with a side of fried rice. The dish left much to be desired, the sauce was very strong and overpowering, thankfully it went away within a second, but the chicken was chewier than gum and drier than the Sahara. It was more bland than an episode of friends and just horrible, also like an episode of friends. Honestly I think it might have been frozen chicken from the taste of it, or lack of. It doesn't stop there unfortunately, the fried rice was also really bland, it was like it was sticky rice masquerading as fried rice. It looked the part, but it did not taste the part. One thing I did like however was the tempura vegetables, those were actually decent. Other than that, very bad, felt like I was on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares.

So disappointed after reading all the good reviews on here. It wasn’t too busy, but service was SO slow, our waiter was really nice though. My husband got da pineapple chicken which was rubbery and bland, the fried rice wasn’t good either. I got the philly sushi roll and the salmon was beyond salty, totally inedible. Neither one of us could eat more than a few bites.
