Very good sushi ….but the place is really hit and the server didn’t really converse with us. We ordered omakase but we didn’t know what we were getting . Still the nigiri was good.

Sushi Experience №5

SUMMARY: Food too expensive for what you paid for. I spent $200 for two but came out still hungry, so we went to Foodland nearby and fed up with poke.

3 star minus because Food doesn't add value. California roll was $21 and Miso soup was $5. The portions are small. California roll was only 6 pieces and the miso soup was tiny for the price.

We ordered the California roll without noticing the price because in the menu it was suggested for a kid "California roll and Miso soup", so we thought they were a kid's meal and the soup was not a separate charge. However, when I reveived the bill, I was furious because of the ridiculous price of the $26 tiny miso soup and CA roll.

In addition, the $77 and $55 sushi combo were all right but definitely not worth the price and you will be still hungry after consuming it because the fish pieces and rice were very small portion.

Another 1 star minus because the server won't bring you the basic stuff unless ask for it. I had to ask for water so they brought it. I had ask for utensils for my daughter so they brought it.

Another a minus star because there were so many baby roaches on the wall where I sat (coach in front of the front door) and it was nasty enough to see them crawling the side wall right next where I sat while eating. Disgusting. I am sorry but the owner really need to keep the store clean.

They also add a special hidden charge to the total what the call it a handling or transaction fee if uses a credit card. Why do they charge that transaction fee towards the customers? That is the card transaction fee the store owner is responsible for. I ran a business also and this is totally a scam.

Will I go again? Never.

Sushi Experience №7

Oh man, where to start? This place is amazing. The food is fantastic, the couple that runs it is great, and the atmosphere is as good as I have ever seen.

They pay attention to every detail of the experience, even details I didn't *know* were details until today! When we got there, a six-seater table inside the door has a little stuffed animal at one of the seats with a plate of fake sushi in front of it, which we thought was cute and then took our two seats at the bar. Later a party of five with a registration was seated there. They set the sixth seat with an adorable stuffy *complete with food* to balance out the table! Who does that? Lemme tell you, 1054 Togoshi does that.

There were other examples of a meticulous, loving, and whimsical attention to detail that I won't spoil, but do yourself the favor of checking this place out on your own.

Be aware the chef is friendly but focused, so maybe don't expect a lot of interaction from him, but his wife (the server) is very friendly. That's not a criticism, just to set expectations if you aren't used to that.

So good!

Sushi Experience №9

Super sweet little spot owned by a husband and wife. He is the chef and she is the hostess and server. A small, quaint spot with tons of island life signs adorning the walls. We texted a few days in advance for a reservation, and when we arrived felt very special- no one else was there yet, and we had a little place set for us right at the sushi bar with a little "reserved" placard. We got both the omakase Nigiri and Sashimi as well as a carpaccio dish and hot green tea. Everything was fantastic. The Sashimi was cut so thick unlike anything I had ever seen--- super generous portions, but so delicate and easy to bite. The broth on the carpaccio we tried was absolutely delicious. You can tell this couple is beloved by the community - two different customers came in (one for takeaway and one for dine-in) who clearly knew them and brought sweet gifts for them and updates about their families.

This was a great experience! The couple running this place are doing a fabulous job. The service was SO fast which surprised me!
We tried the edamame, California roll, and spicy hamachi roll. All great! The spicy hamachi roll was one of the best quality fish in a sushi roll we have ever had.
The whole place is decorated marvelously and with such fun, intentional details!
Definitely make this a stop!

BEST SUSHI ON MAUI 🤩 not only is the place super cute (tons of snoopys everywhere and beach decor!) it’s just one couple that do everything themselves! and the food is AMAZING. super soft rice and fish, and super flavorful! not even super expensive! i got two rolls and the total was $40 including tip :) i think it’s the best food i’ve had here in my two week stay 👀

I’ve eaten sushi most of in my life, having grown up in the Vancouver area, and this is likely the best sushi I’ve yet had. My husband and I ordered the miso soup, spicy salmon roll, tako wasabi, and salmon nigiri. I can’t say enough about how fresh everything tasted. The salmon was beyond words, it was truly special. Better than any salmon-based sushi dish I’ve ever had. The wasabi was authentic, fresh, well balanced. The couple running the restaurant are so sweet, courteous and professional. They attend to their art and profession with love. I also really enjoyed the bright and peaceful beach vibes decor. All my best to your business and to your family!

Truly one of the coolest spots in Maui. Having lived in Japan, this place was really like my good old days on the island of Okinawa. The couple who runs the joint, well, they’re the sweetest most gentle souls. The food was amazing, well thought out and prepared. The ambiance was heart warming and their service, immaculate. You have to check this place out if you’re in Kihei.

One of the best sushi experiences in Maui. While the location and decor isn’t the fanciest the sushi does not disappoint. I had many pieces of high quality fish that tasted very fresh and reminded me of something I would get at a very upscale sushi restaurant. I really liked how real wasabi was used and I also loved the tuna salad. If you are coming to Maui and want to experience good sushi I would recommend coming here.

We tried this place tonight! Service was very sweet albeit very slow as there is only one server, who was very kind, for all the tables. Atmosphere was so fun as the inside has a great vibe. Inflation has caused lots of things to go up, so I expect all restaurants to be more expensive however I felt like the fish quality didn’t match the price tag. I also had a water glass with a piece of green onion and it took a long time for her to come back so I could tell her. I would recommend this place only for the great atmosphere but not for the sushi, and if you try this place, just expect higher prices on the menu than what is posted here in pictures so you avoid some sticker shock.

First time to give one star for good food, but the attitude of the chef was unbearable- ignored us from the second we entered(we were sitting in front of him, then kinda just threw the plates in my husbands face, , (no idea why first then I read the reviews, I guess he did not want us there cos it was closing hour). We should have left immediately, I did leave early cos the atmosphere was suffocating.

Went here for a quick bite to eat this evening. The couple who own this place are the only employees which gives it a nice personal feel. Both were very friendly and sweet. From reading the other reviews it sounds like the guy isn’t the most friendly person at times. But we took interest in his place and he was very sweet. Sometimes people are just shy or not confident with a language barrier. As for the food, it was fresh and delicious. I especially enjoyed the takowasabi as it was fresh and had flavours that were different from other places. A refreshing change. The rest of the food was also delicious. I would highly recommend this sweet ma and pa restaurant.

Visited 2 years ago

Sushi Experience №44

The couple that owns the restaurant clearly works hard to keep the place running, however some factors made the experience not so enjoyable:

- Long wait time despite a small number of guests.
- Menu states that the price increase is to keep the restaurant survive. Final bill states that credit card charge is passed down to customers, had to ask to find out the surcharge is 4%.
- More importantly, food is just ok. The sushi is fresh enough but nothing exceptional for the price point.

Overall an overpriced sushi place that failed to deliver an enjoyable experience.

Sushi Experience №49

Despite the abundance of signs and paraphernalia on the walls of 1054 Togoshi about happiness and aloha, our experience was anything but friendly. The sushi chef neither acknowledged our presence nor made eye contact with us our entire meal, and this was with only 7 other patrons in the restaurant. The husband/wife team that owns 1054 is clearly working hard, and many of the notices around the place remind you that it is just the two of them and ask for your patience. But one of the things we look forward to from a small establishment is a little personal attention. The atmosphere was heavy with their stress.

Our fish was fresh and tasty, except for one piece of kanpachi that was so tough that it was unchewable.

Diners beware: 1054 closes at 800pm and "last call" is at 730pm which was bad timing for us since our reservation was for 700pm on a Friday night. Also, the restaurant charges a 4% surcharge if you use your credit card, a policy we learned about from a notice at the bottom of our bill. They should advertise this in the storefront, on the website, and on the menu so that you are informed before you buy.

We went to 1054 Togoshi for dinner because of the good reviews. The restaurant is nicely decorated and welcoming. The sushi is extraordinary and really delicious , as the chef is preparing every dish carefully. There are several special sushi fishes which you don‘t get everywhere. Nicely done normal Saba and Aji (horse makerel) and Toro (fatty tuna). We also took the yellowtail Carpaccio which is made with a really good marinade.
The chef and his wife are the only servers and one feels that they are doing their job with love. My wife was pregnant at our stay on Maui and so she got good advice what was possible to eat from the menu.
It would be awesome if they could manage to get another facility with maybe a good view on the ocean or somewhere more reachable but apart from that it was the best sushi on Maui. We came back on the next day ;-)

1054 Togoshi is a small, family owned and operated sushi restaurant. The owners (2 people) do everything from the restaurant interior design to all prep work, cooking, preparing, serving, cleaning…you name it. They must work 14 hour days! Yet they have created a warm and disarmingly unpretentious setting for excellent meals. Go check it out and enjoy!

I called early in the day and left a message wanting reservations. My call was returned promptly and we made reservations for the following day, Friday, for two...no problem! So nice to have my call returned.
We sat at the counter, very nicely decorated, very clean, calm beachy feel. We ordered many different items and loved all of it. So beautiful, fresh and delicious, excellent service, so courteous and prompt. A very warm, inviting and comfortable place.
This is a truly excellent sushi restaurant, not a trendy all you can place. The chef is very talented and his wife (server) is amazingly polite and an excellent server and support to the chef.
Parking was no problem although the spaces are small, restrooms available and handicap accessible.
Be sure to ask the market price before ordering those items, if you’re watching cost.....you could be surprised by a very costly uni.

The place is absolutely adorable, very positive vibes and aloha spirit everywhere, live the design and all the little details. Also it’s run by a super nice couple that really try their best to give good service and they really went out of their way to please us and find me the right combination since I have a lot of food restrictions.
However, maybe it was because we came pretty late at the end of the day - many things were missing or main plates ran out. Also I asked for a little different combination and was. Extremely over charged for that (I asked to add tuna and avocado to the veggie roll and was charged 18$ more for that…)
I also got it after almost 30 min and after all the other dishes were already served to everybody.
It was very good and tasted, and the quality of the food was excellent.
It was very hot inside as well, I’m not sure the air conditioning was on or any ventilation at all.

Came here after reading the reviews from Google. Was not very good. Coming from Los Angeles, the food was overpriced for sushi. The specific types of fish were not prepared very well. The mackerel (Saba) was very fishy and had a off smell. The imitation nigiri was much too bland and did have a bit of bitter fishy taste. For the price of the sushi I did expect better quality. If you hail from Los Angeles, there are chain sushi restaurants that make sushi better such as sugar fish.

The best Omakase I've had, in it's simplest form. I've had Omakase around the world ranging from just about 65SGD in Sg to about $250 in NYC. In all these cases, the Omakase were pretty good but the ingredients were also a bit fusion-y or fancy. The 12 piece Omakase here is only $48 and it's a steal at this price. It was just the fish and the rice but it was so FRESH that it made all the difference👌like I said, Omakase at it's simplest but best form
The establishment is run by a couple and gives a very cozy feel. Highly highly recommend the Omakase.

Hands down, some of the best and most well prepared sashimi and sushi rolls we’ve tasted. 1054 Togoshi was at/above the level of most sushi restaurants I’ve dined at in Tokyo and Osaka. Satoe was very friendly and has been sanitizing and cleaning super thoroughly. She even cleaned the restaurant doors after every patron entered or exited. She and Manabu run an amazing restaurant that I believe every sushi lover would enjoy experiencing. Seating is limited to 7 people due to the size of the restaurant.

Can not recommend enough! Authentic Japanese-owned sushi restaurant. Very fresh sushi, and true Japanese flavors. The salads were delicious, the miso soup tasted like my mom's, and the sushi rice was perfect. I think the customers allowed in store for covid are very limited. Felt very confident ordering from there because of the precautions taken. Customers were waiting outside instead of huddled at the desk inside. Definitely worth taking out and eating for a picnic, or back home!!

I will give everyone reading this one important piece of advice.

YOU NEED A RESERVATION TO EAT HERE and it’s best to reserve a few days in advance.

If you take the time to do this you will be treated to some of the best fish you will ever experience. If you don’t it is very likely you will be turned away.

Yes, the chef is usually grumpy. However, you can not deny the passion and effort he puts into everyone of his creations. His wife is a lovely host and also puts forth her best effort every time.

The prices seem a little high at first, but once you taste the fish you don’t even question it.

Lovely & gentle ... Perfect for a romantic evening or a quite night with yourself. The sushi is deeply authentic & wonderfully prepared. You will be served by a kind and thoughtful couple who's natural place is this restaurant. Relax & enjoy <3

Sushi Experience №142

Do. Not. Go. I have never experienced such blatant discrimination in my life.

We are winding down what has been a wonderful trip to Hawaii. My Wife was finishing up an errand and given our daughter had been begging for sushi, I decided to go ahead with the little ones to get a table with my wife following. We arrive and wait to be acknowledged. Sushi chef looks up at me, glares, but then keeps doing his thing. So we wait for the hostess who seems occupied, so I make eye contact with the chef while also eyeballing what looks to be an open table in the corner, and ask “is this table taken”. The response is a curt, “yes. Wait”. Somewhat knowing Japanese culture, I don’t take offense to this, but the next action was blatant. We stand by the “please wait to be seated” sign so that I can at least get an idea of how long the wait is going to be (with young children whom are hungry, this is a necessity) and the chef looks up and says “wait outside”. So I walk out with my kids. My wife comes around the corner 5 minutes later, waits by the same sign, and is given a welcome by the hostess immediately, told she can be seated in 15 minutes, and is told she can either stand in the front of the restaurant or wait outside if she’s more comfortable. So obviously she comes back to tell me, I return into the restaurant, don’t say a word to the chef, wait for the hostess, who comes back over, lacks respect towards me yet again, and just says “shes sorry she can’t accommodate seating me tonight”. Literally minutes after my wife was told 15 minute wait.

By now you’ve may or may not have guessed that my wife is Caucasian and I am African American, but that was our experience at this place. We even went as far as to describe our experience to our server at the next sushi restaurant we were finally able to sit down for as a family and were told that the sushi chef at 1054 is “crazy” and they aren’t surprised we had that experience either.

So while the sushi itself might be really good, there’s no reason to support a discriminatory business. Especially when there is a ton of really good fish elsewhere on this island. This place isn’t in the spirit of Maui. Go at your own risk.

So fresh. Way better than the pricey Wailea sushi places. Make reservation or come early and hope they will seat you.

The toro and salmon nigiri were great! As other reviewers have mentioned, chef is not a pleasant person and really brings down the overall experience. Fortunately for him, his wife has a personality that is suited for customer service. Just don't expect a traditional  "Irasshaimase!" when you walk into their restaurant.

Very fresh sushi! This restaurant is run by a small husband and wife team - they have their plate full but they did a great job making sure their customers were happy and attended to. You could really tell the sushi chef was passionate about what he does.

I’m so happy that we came across 1054 Togoshi. At first when we pulled up I was unsure, as it looked very small and we were dining with our 2 year old. But reviews were good and our bellies were empty so we stayed. Upon walking in, we were welcomed by beautiful, clean, beach home-like decor and an empty 4 seater table just for us! (Happy we arrived when we did as it started to get busier as we enjoyed our meal and guests had to wait.) This lovely establishment is amazingly run by only 2 people, so be prepared to practice your patience a little (not necessarily a bad thing! It definitely never felt frantic or rushed in any way). The food was SO GOOD and worth it. We ordered simple: the Miso butterfish, poke, salmon sashimi, spicy salmon roll and California roll - and the flavours were amazing! It was not your run of the mill sushi and definitely stood out for me. My son and husband also loved it all. They had a couple little baby books at the front so I was able to entertain my son for a bit with those while we waited for our food. Also to note, they did not have a high chair. But overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for quality dishes and a nice atmosphere. You can definitely see the care and effort these two put into every detail. A great dining experience!

Amazingly fresh fish-I had the omakase sashimi and it was so flavorful. The oyster shooter was delicious. They have a good beer/wine/sake list.

The chef and his partner were a great team ensuring patrons' needs were met.

It's a small place with the two people being chef and server so make reservations. You'll be happy you chose to eat here!

Called in the morning and kept calling every hour trying to get a reservation for my birthday. Left name, number, and the fact that it was my birthday. Drove an hour to get there right when they opened only to see a sign that they would be closed for a private party. Asked for carryout if eating there was not a possibility. They said no, and they shrugged their shoulders when my husband said it would have been nice to have at least recorded a message or have returned our call so we could have made other plans. They were not even apologetic.

The food was delicous. The service was very friendly and helpful, our items came out quickly considering there was only the chef and the waitress present.
We had ankimo, tako wasabi, ahi salad, kinpira, the 1054 togoshi roll, chawan mushi, edamame, and an oyster shooter. All of it was great.
The restaurant is small and fills quickly, so try to make reservations if you can; if they dont answer the phone it's because they are probably busy tending to guests.

If only I could go to Maui weekly (duh). Small place so get reservations or arrive near 5 PM opening. Just the owner and his wife. Very friendly couple. He works quickly. We arrived early and sat at the bar and got to chat a little. Uni was buttery good. Toro I can't even find in many spots. Prices are high moderate but well worth it.

Wow, wow, wow! Not only is the food so fresh and delicious, but the atmosphere is so cozy and inviting. They went to great lengths to make it BEAUTIFULLY decorated. They've thought of everything, down to little signs at each table/bar seating that explain where the bathroom is and how they operate (it's just the two of them: one sushi chef and one server, but I still thought the timing of the food was typical, if not fast). It's all very reasonably priced, considering the service, atmosphere and taste. See menus below. Sorry for the glare. Thank you Togoshi for your amazing hospitality!

WOW. This place is unbelievable. My partner and I ate the 12 piece nigiri set and were blown away by how fresh the fish was. The chef is superb, has obviously mastered his art. His wife - the only waitress there - is as sweet as can be. We were recommended this place by a couple while eating at another restaurant and are so glad we ate here. We’re from Vancouver, and know great sushi but this tops nearly everything we’ve had in Vancouver. Makes you want to move to Japan, or better yet, live in 1054 Togoshi!

I really love sushi but I never had a particular favorite restaurant because everything tasted the same UNTIL I stepped into this cute little gem located in Kihei. Okay, I didn't even look at the menu and I already loved the place from the start. The owners (husband and wife) decorated/designed everything themselves. ARTISTS! It's just the two of them running this little restaurant that makes you feel like you're inside their own home. The wife is so sweet! Now.. the sushi just solidified my decision to call this my favorite sushi place. It's so fresh. The attention to detail and quality was outstanding. I don't want to spoil the rest for you... You have to go there and experience the beauty of authentic sushi!! Coming back here again... When I have the money. ♡ P.S. I never write reviews but I had to for this place, because, who wouldn't?!
