Stylish haunt serving sushi & other sophisticated Japanese fare in an airy, contemporary setting.
I recently dined at Umi Restaurant, and it truly deserves a 5-star rating. This upscale establishment offers a refined atmosphere, and I loved being surrounded by other elegant and sophisticated diners. I enjoyed a glass of champagne and white wine, both of which were delightful. While I tried a variety of rolls, the lobster appetizer stole the show—it was incredibly tasty! The vibe and ambiance were perfect, making it an ideal spot for an upscale date night. Despite its luxurious feel, the restaurant remains cozy with its low, intimate lighting. Overall, an amazing experience!

The food was really good! I had oysters in olive oil, hurricane tuna roll and also the donut. It was all very fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was very nice. I do feel like the staff was moving a bit too fast. But all in all it was good dining. I give them a 9/10

I kept hearing from my friends, Best sushi in town, so I had to try.
For parking just go like you're gonna go to chops and there's a valet.
The door to the restaurant is hard to find. You're gonna come up the stairs or take the elevator to this fake grass open area, just walk straight across, that the entry is so hard to find is ridiculous, I had to ask a cop how the hell to get in this place. So they get a ding right there.
Love the atmosphere very cool, very warming, very Asian authentic look, big, open space, huge sushi bar area.
The service was amazing.l I was just on top of it.
The sushi is excellent, and it is great quality. Everything we ordered from salmon to shrimp to tuna all delicious, all fresh.
The only bad thing are the prices, ridiculous, just over the top.
I will not go back, not because it was bad food or service in anyway, but I've got other sushi places that are just as good and half the price, but you go ahead and enjoy and bring your wallet cause you're going to need it.

Go to Chops and valet for $2 + tip. It’s the easiest way to get in. Take elevator up and walk across the green.
The food and service were both amazing. It’s a little dark. Wish they had more light to read menu and see food (maybe I’m getting old lol) The Sake Aioli was my favorite. Will be back just for that!!

Went to Umi for our anniversary, amazed to say that atmosphere was dark and ominous. Bit on the smaller side, but just makes your date or with friends more intimate and enjoyable. Food was outstanding, drinks were amazing. Fabulous way to end the night and celebrate our 6yrs!

Food was nothing exciting. Top quality ingredients, sure, but just not fun like other restaurants in the neighborhood. Atmosphere is the worst though. A cop literally at the entrance hallway all night, in the way and bored on his phone. The place is dark and cramped. Uncomfortably dark. You can't even open your menu without it bumping into the person next to you. At the end, a server was taking plates/utensils from the neighboring table and dropped some on me. Probably because the tables are so small and close to each other. Three servers were witnesses and just talked amongst themselves, but no one apologized to me. Just not great at all

I never write negative reviews but i was upset about the hosting treatment i received yesterday night. I came here to celebrate my birthday and had a 9:15PM reservation. I was actually early for the reservation and got sat ~ 30 minutes after our reservation. I was the 1st one there and last one to be sat. They told us we were 2nd in line and 4 people got sat before us. To us, the timing was important since we had places to be afterwards. It seems like they didn’t seat us because we look super young. When we finally got seated, i wanted to take a few pictures. I only took 3 flash pictures and a host came up to us saying “no flash photography” which is so ironic because on instagram under Umi’s tagged location you will see influencers and other normal people posting flash digital cam pictures where the restaurant and food is the background. This is another reason why we felt targeted. Anyways, our server was amazing and super sweet and understood we now had to rush the dining experience because we were going to our other matters. We’ve dined at Nobu Malibu and other fine dining restaurants that are comparable and this by far the worst treatment Ive received.

So, you’re looking for the best sushi in the city. Well, good news, this is it.
Umi has amazing cocktails and incredible food.
The ingredients they use are top notch, and the chef uses them to craft unforgettable dishes.
My recommendation: surrender and go with the omakase. Let the chef take you on a culinary adventure of fine Japanese cuisine. You may encounter some dishes that may not appeal to your palate, but you’ll also eat some of the best sushi you’ll ever have.
And if you’ve got room for dessert, do yourself a favor and get the donut. Don’t worry, it’s small enough that you can get by without sharing it, which you won’t want to do, because it’s so tasty!

We’re new to Atlanta, and have heard great word of mouth about Umi, so we came with a small group the other night, excited to check it out. The space has a great vibe - well designed, well lit, cool music, and a well dressed, well heeled crowd.
The hosts are wonderful. We had an 8:30 reservation, and our table was not quite ready yet, so they showed is to a table in the lounge to have a cocktail while we waited. Once seated, the menu is quite extensive and bit overwhelming. We ended up just ordering a little bit of everything and some sake. Everything was good, but in my opinion, the raw fish is definitely where they shine. The fish and raw rolls tasted fresh, delicate and so flavorful.
My only complaint is that we were extremely rushed through our meal. I understand you close at 9pm, but if you’re going to accept an 8:30 reservation, you offer the same level of hospitality as a 7:30 - and we were spending! And if you really want to move us along, offer some suggestions and or guidance through the extensive menu. No recommendations whatsoever were made. I understand everyone wants to go home, but this isn’t an inexpensive restaurant. I gave 4 stars bc I’m sure if we had come earlier we would have had a better experience.

Umi is one of our two “go to” places for sushi as we live nearby in Tuxedo Park. You have to love the ease of valet and beautiful setting. Umi is gorgeous inside! Service has been consistently good. Be sure to try the cocktails, which are excellent. Madai carpaccio is a must as is the lobster on a hot skillet. Spicy tuna in crispy rice is also excellent. Be sure to try the different truffle and wagyu nigiri! Delicious! Also the ceviche is a Peruvian spice with aji chombo, super delicious. Eric is the manager: very professional but with a great personal touch. He has called me to ensure our evening was as desired. Excellent experience all around!!

It’s been years since I last visited Atlanta, and while I was excited to return to some old favorites, I was disappointed by the changes at Umi. My wife and I used to love sitting at the sushi bar for its vibrant atmosphere and excellent service. Unfortunately, this time it was quite different.
It seems there may be a new chef, as I noticed he was not engaged with his team or guests. He spent most of his time leaning against the back wall, yawning with his mouth open, and did not even greet us. This lack of enthusiasm and professionalism was a stark contrast to the lively and welcoming environment we remembered.
I hope Umi takes this feedback seriously, as the passion and energy of the staff were once key to its charm. It’s disheartening to see such a wonderful place lose its appeal.

God is not pleased by your service. You will reap what you sow for blatant discrimination hidden behind air forces. How sad and pitiful of anyone trying to act oblivious to their own hatred toward a certain race. You knew what you were doing. We should be used to it by now but it’s sad how sick in the mind people like this are.

The atmosphere is nice but the food was lacking a bit. I consider a tuna roll to be the most basic thing a sushi restaurant can make and for it be subpar at this price was unfortunate. I had drinks, the spicy tuna crispy rice, and spicy tuna rolls. The rice was pretty good but everything else was just ok. Wouldn’t come again because there is definitely better out there

After seeing several recommendations for this spot, we landed on a resy here for date night while visiting Atlanta. I’ve had amazing sushi in Hawaii, Seattle, I’ve been to Matsuhisa in Denver. And I have NEVER HAD BETTER SUSHI IN MY LIFE. 1st off, the atmosphere was very dark, sexy and vibey. Even though we sat at the sushi counter, the vibes were immaculate. Amazing for date night or a special dinner out with friends. The service was tip top, every single need was anticipated and catered to without even having to ask. The bathrooms were super nice too with the thickest toilet paper I’ve ever seen lol and Aesop soap which I loved. The sushi was incredibly fresh, and the cocktails were thoughtfully created- my fave being the Matsuyama’s Jacket. We ordered a ton, but the stand out dishes to us were there Yellowtail Sashimi app, Otoro Caviar Nigiri, and the Surf & Turf and Foie Gras rolls. Cannot wait to visit again!

Umi Sushi is a chic and sophisticated dining destination in the trendy Buckhead area of Atlanta, GA exudes an air of elegance and refinement. If you ever can find the door, you are transported into a realm of sleek sophistication and refined elegance. It embodies the philosophy of omotenashi, or the spirit of hospitality, where every detail is carefully considered to ensure a memorable dining experience. Soft lighting and subtle Japanese-inspired décor envelop you in an atmosphere of warmth and authenticity. Master Sushi chefs work their magic, crafting extortionary creations, a masterpiece of freshness, precision, and artistry. It is the perfect destination for sushi enthusiasts and discerning diners alike, seeking a culinary adventure.
🍲What I Tasted: For starters a collection of tender cuts of tuna as nigiri and tataki that melt in your mouth. My main course featuring tuna and sautéed foie gras, a delicacy with a rich, buttery texture and luxurious flavor with a velvety smoothness that coats the palate. And let us not forget my dessert that was described on the menu only as “Just order it. No words can do it justice.” —a warm cake donut paired with almost frozen custard, a heavenly perfect balance of sweet and textures to treat for the senses. And of course, I tried the Tamago, and it was executed to demonstrate the chef's skills and dedication to the craft.
💡 Standout Feature: Umi is more than just a restaurant; it is a celebration of culinary tradition and craftsmanship. Each dish is a labor of love, reflecting the dedication and passion of the chefs. It is a place where simplicity meets sophistication, and every bite tells a story of artistry and skill.
⚠️ What Was Mid: While Umi's discreet facade adds to its allure, finding the entrance can be more than a bit of a challenge for first-time visitors. But trust me, the culinary journey that awaits inside is well worth the effort of locating this hidden treasure. Also, trust me if you cannot find it you need to ask someone…

My wife and I opted for the Umi-Kase experience, Umi’s take on Omakase, which was amazing. Several course of very fresh dishes with incredible flavor profiles that enhance traditional Japanese sushi, adding flavors like homemade chimichurri and caviar. Watching the chef craft our food in front of us while the staff perfectly paired various sakes and beverages to our palate and meal. What an amazing experience! We will for sure make it back to Umi.

2023 New Year's celebration at Umi was nice, but the noise level is way too much. It was actually absurd. This was my second time at umi. And I enjoyed the food, but each time, the noise was way too overboard. The server would often disappear, and we were left wondering where many of our items ordered were and some never even arrived, even though they were on my bill at the end (which they promptly removed after brought to ther attention). I don't think I will return for a third attempt. The chairs are wooden and incredibly uncomfortable, and the restaurant is kept so dark that you can't see anything, including your server. There is no hard printed menu, so you have to scan and try to see the menu mice-type on your phone, which is also incredibly inconvenient.

Regrettably, our experience with the top-tier Omakase menu fell short of expectations. The sushi, while okay, didn't surpass what we could have chosen ourselves. The unexpected inclusion of chicken wings with dark sauce was a departure from the anticipated sushi experience. Additionally, the promised soup was missing from the menu, contrary to what the waitress informed us. Sadly, this falls below our expectations, and it's unlikely we'll return. Hoping for improvements in the future.

Edit Sep 7, 2023: the service was significantly worse than my prior visits - nobody came up to our table for the first 10 minutes. And to add to it, I'm not sure if it's their setup or acoustics but it was migraine-inducing loud even though we were seated outside - and this was just from other tables talking. We couldn't take it after a while and went to the adjacent Chai Yo instead. If I wanted stupid noise and having to yell to try and have a conversation, I'd just have gone to a club instead.
------------------------------------
Great food but service could be improved and the fact that you can't take leftovers to go, makes it limiting.
All the food we ordered was delicious - the yellowtail jalapeno, aburi, and even the veggie roll. Solid flavors and great presentation!
We really enjoyed their sake selection and the chocolate kyu was fun and they did a good job taking our dietary restrictions into consideration.
However, outside of that, the service seemed to be a bit lacking for a restaurant like this. Our server seemed distracted while we were asking them about the menu and the busser was in a real rush to clear out our plates (even though we were way earlier than closing time). We were also celebrating a birthday and despite asking us what the event was, they didn't seem to care or bring it up unlike most restaurants we've been to.
Finally, not allowing diners to box leftovers really limited us from trying out more things on the menu.

Umi was absolutely delicious and worth every single bite ! I was surprised to see how crowded it was on a Tuesday night and was pretty frustrated by having to wait almost 40 minutes past our reservation time. BUT, the service and food completely made up for it. We were given 2 complimentary appetizers due to our long wait, which was so incredibly thoughtful. Every dish we ordered was delicious, probably one of the best sushi places I have tried! Can’t wait to visit again

This place is overrated in my option. The customer service is by far the worst I have experienced in a while. From initial check in to the entire ordering experience. The host are rude and so are the mangers. I feel as though they do not value their customers and their experience but focus mainly on how many people they can cycle in and out. It’s ridiculous.Based on their actions our business is not of value.
Fish was not fresh which was disappointing considering the location and Umi being so well known.I have dinner in twice.
First visit, the manger requested we sit at the sushi table which was shocking because we had reservations and had made it on time. Why would I book reservations in a timely manner all to sit at the sushi bar at a Michelin rated restaurant. I was offended.
On the second visit,I called in cancel a reservation due to being sick and the manager did not have a once empathy and proceeded with an unprofessional/insensitive manner.
With that being said, customer service is extremely Important regardless of the circumstances. It’s unfortunate but I will not be going back to this place due to the horrible customer service and mediocre quality of fish.

Truly abysmal customer service. We had a reservation for a party of 8. A few of us were flying in and coming straight to the restaurant. My friends flight was delayed so she was going to arrive late. I explained the situation and asked if we could be seated and start ordering, however they stated the entire party needed to be present and they would do a “head count” prior to seating us. I understand the reason behind this policy but we don’t need to be treated like kindergarteners. We were waiting at the very cramped bar and My husband joined us after closing our tab at the bar next door. He was wearing sandals (again because we had just flown in). We were told he would not be allowed in according to their dress code. I explained that we were traveling from out of town and so didn’t have time to change and honestly the idea of a strict dress code at a decent but my no means Michelin starred restaurant seems antiquated and frankly absurdly self important. I told them that that was fine and they could cancel the reservation and we would dine at a more inclusive establishment. The manager said that because they were losing a table of 8 they would still be charging the $50 pp reservation cancellation fee to my credit card. I told him I would dispute the charge with the credit card company since we did not cancel and were in actuality denied service and he stated that he would make sure I was no longer welcome at their restaurant. We left and had dinner at King and Duke down the street. They had no issue with my husband’s attire. Of note, as we were leaving I saw people entering the restaurant in casual sneakers, and even one woman exiting in yoga pants, a gym shirt and gym shoes. Unclear to me why this is ok and yet we were denied service because of a pair of sandals. I will not be returning to this restaurant again. One would think modern consumer and hospitality dependent businesses would recognize that dogmatic adherence to outdated standards of dress/appearance is arbitrary and ignorant.

Umi offers luxury dining, which can be intrusive at times. Someone was always coming to the table, rearranging plates, glasses and napkins. Wait staff tells you the chef's recommendation on how to "properly enjoy" each dish, lending to a micromanaged feel. The dining space is also incredibly dark and loud, which makes intimate conversation difficult. That said, the dishes were coursed well, so we didn't get too full too quickly. And the foie gras nigiri was one of the most delicious things I've eaten in a very long time.

The sushi and coctails were delicious. We had the tuna tataki, lobster tempura roll, hurricane roll, and the Nashi 78 cocktail. It was loud and very crowded, but the ambiance and lighting made it intimate for a date night. Our server was attentive, and our food and drinks came out at a moderate pace. My only con was sitting at a table right beside the bar, which was crowded and close to the kitchen. So between people's butts near my face as they're crowding around the bar, and waiters brushing past our table, I started to get slightly annoyed. Other than that, I look forward to going back the next time I visit the ATL.

There is nothing good about the dining experience here. Feels like a boot camp just to have dinner! I asked for a Togo box and was told they do not allow food to be taken out.

I’m here now and the food is outstanding. The French 75 I ordered is smooth and refreshing. Ever item is flavorful. Leave it to me to get the 1 in 10 spicy shishito pepper. Amazing time. Will be back again and again.

This isn’t your average sushi spot, Umi is the kind of place where you want to spend a special night with a very special person. The service is impeccable, atmosphere is vibrant and the creative menu selections surpasses what you might think sushi should be. The flavors danced in our mouths with every curated bites by Chef Todd. When you come here, must suspend your expectations and ask for Kevin by name and let him serve the menu of today’s freshest offerings. We put our trust in him and he did what we were told to expect…. The unknown is more tantalizing than reading listed menu ingredients and expect the anticipated flavors! We did opted for the chef’s tasting menu because heard (from the tea leafs) that their fish arrived freshly from Japan today. Once Kevin’s described today’s special fish varieties the evening was off to an awesome start. I could list and post photos of everything we ate… but I rather you see come and experience the art of food. Special thank you to our unsung hero, ahem, Sung! No pun intended but wow, thank you for the rec! This evening wouldn’t have happened had we not had the serendipitous pleasure of meeting you 🫶🏼
Kevin, Chef Todd and Sung: you made out Atlanta trip memorable. A thousand thank you’s 😘

Saw some of the nightmarish reviews and terrible treatment of Black people, but we love food and took a chance. I did wear my finest Adidas and hope the discrimination has been addressed. Be that as it may, some of the most amazing flavors and some of the freshest fish I’ve ever tasted inside Atlanta. Every dish was beautiful. This was our second visit for my birthday, truly a treat.

Umi, Umi, Umi…. My favorite ATL restaurant experience to date. Worth the 30 min wait for a superb dining experience. Our waiter was Danny and he did not disappoint. Yellow tail, tuna carpaccio, lobster toban yaki, surf and turf sushi roll… all fantastic! You won’t regret!

My wife and I and our two kids had a 5:45 reservation tonight. We had trouble getting an Uber, and called and said we would be 10-15min late. We showed up 6:01 and the hostess informed us we were 16min late and they only have a 15min grace period. They could now seats us at 7:30. I honestly didn’t even know how to respond, I mean what a joke. 8 and 10yr old in tow after a long day. What a joke this place is! 1 min late and a considerate phone call prior. All they care about is every last penny they can cycle through this place, not customers.

This place was the best sushi experience of my 55 year old life, and I have been eating sushi in CA since 1992.
Our favorites were the Nigiri daily specials of fatty tuna, Japanese red snapper. We got the chef special 2 piece which was excellent. The eel box was good. The tuna carpaccio was incredible! We finished with crepe cake and chocolate bomb. The crepe cake was wonderful and not overly sweet. We had an amazing time for my BFF’s birthday.
Good sushi is an experience, also check out the bathrooms.

Underwhelming food, and incredibly overpriced — which says a lot coming from San Francisco. Atmosphere is unpleasant; too loud and too dark. Servers were friendly, but cannot recommend Umi.

First time here, we are new to Atlanta and are trying all the restaurants and celebrating our anniversary. I had the omakase because I wanted to taste the best of everything the chef had to offer. The sashimi was very tasty and fresh. I chose only sashimi, no nigiri(no rice). The lobster that is seared at the table was so good, tender and sweet.
My husband had the chicken teriyaki. It was good, chicken was tender but nothing special. My pinot grigio was delish and my husband's drink was yummy as well. The only thing negative is that it got very busy very fast, so our drinks were not getting filled as needed.
Next time I will order my sashimi alacart and choose the pieces I enjoy the most.

We had a reservation for 5 people. One was running late. They refused to seat us until everyone was there and said we could wait at the bar. The sooner we are seated, the sooner we will finish! Especially since she said there was a 15 min grace period on reservation times. We didn't want a drink, plus the bar area is small and felt cramped. So our only other option was to wait in the cold outside. I finally convinced the hostess to seat us. She said we'd have to be done by 7:30 (that's 2 hrs), which was not a problem. The girl who sat us again reminded us we had to free up the table by 7:30. The service was a little slow, but we were in no rush so didn't care. For a $500 meal I would have expected a little more class. AND, the is a $50pp fee if you cancel 24hrs prior to the reservation. The food was good, but we won't be back.

From the host and hostess to the bartenders and waitstaff everyone was super friendly and accommodating : our order included the avocado salad , spicy tuna crispy rice , rock shrimp tempura, lobster box , new page roll , otoro and salmon caviar nigiri and foie gras roll . This was allot of food for the four of us but was excellent !!!!!!!! and nothing was left . We might have had the angel food cake and donuts for dessert but I’m not telling ;) Umi is excellent and read past the political statement reviews as they have nothing to do with the service , food and ambiance of this great Atlanta restaurant.

Consistently delicious for about a decade. I’ve eaten at Umi over 100 times since it’s opening. It is my fav restaurant in Atlanta. It’s my go to spot for sushi, celebrations or just because. The food has never been disappointing. I have tried many other upscale sushi restaurants and none compare. There’s a reason that almost a decade later the restaurant is still full every night and reservations are booking out weeks in advance.

Ok, these one star reviews are not AT ALL accurate about this restaurant. I’ve lived in Atlanta for 8 years, have been here over a dozen times, and it will always be the best place to get high quality sushi. It is always VERY busy, so you may have to wait a bit for your drinks and food, but they always deliver. My go to favorites are the lobster tempura, otoro nigiri, and sake aioli nigiri. The chocolate cue is also an amazing dessert, but be sure to notate it on your reservation notes as they only make an handful of them per night. Absolute knock outs. I understand that everyone has different experiences at restaurants, some of them bad and some very well may be the restaurant’s fault: no one is perfect, but the one star reviews here do not give an accurate representation of the quality they deliver.

Extremely overrated in my opinion.
I went to this restaurant and ended up with a headache.
I made reservations, I arrived on time and it took the staff over 35 mins to get us a table. The music was so loud, that made everyone scream to each other, absolutely overwhelming. I even asked the waiter if it was normal for the music being this loud, im talking it was almost like a club or lounge feeling. Also this restaurant inside was so dark I could not see my food very well. Definitely not restaurant atmosphere.
The food was ok, definitely nothing spectacular. I gave a 2 start because location and that's all.
To be honest I had a way better experience a Tomo.
